Abstract
AIM This study evaluated artificial bone models against a human bone substitute to assess the primary stability of orthodontic mini-implants (OMIs) at varying implant sites with different morphologies and qualities. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 1200 OMI placements of four types were inserted into four artificial bone models of different density (D1, D2, D3, D4) and into a human bone substitute (HB). The implants varied in diameter (2.0 and 2.3 mm) and length (9 and 11 mm). Each specimen had four implant sites: no defect, one-wall defect, three-wall defect, and circular defect. The implant stability quotient (ISQ) values were measured using resonance frequency analysis (RFA) and insertion placement torque values (IPT) were assessed for primary stability. Correlation analysis was performed to evaluate the different models. RESULTS The highest IPT value was registered for the 2.0 mm × 11 mm implant inserted into D1 with no defect (37.53 ± 3.02 Ncm). The lowest ISQ value was measured for the 2.3 mm × 9 mm OMI inserted into D3 with a circular defect (12.33 ± 5.88) and the highest for the 2.3 mm × 9 mm implant inserted into HB with no defect (63.23 ± 2.57). A strong correlation (r = 0.64) for IPT values and a very strong correlation (r = 0.8) for ISQ values was found between D2 and HB. CONCLUSION Bone defects and bone quality affected the primary stability of implants in terms of ISQ and IPT values. Results for bone model D2 correlated very well with the HB substitution material.

Abstract
PURPOSE In this study, we investigated the effects of leukocyte- and platelet-rich fibrin (L-PRF) on implant stability and alterations in the marginal bone surrounding posterior maxillary implants. METHODS This randomized clinical trial was conducted to compare the variable of L-PRF placement around maxillary implants. Resonance frequency analysis (RFA) was used to evaluate the implant stability immediately after surgery and at 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, and 12 weeks after surgery (t0 to t6, respectively). In addition, the amount of marginal bone changes around the implant at t6 was compared with the baseline using periapical radiography. RESULTS The RFA outcomes were statistically significant within each group (P < 0.001, Eta2 = 0.322); however, in none of the follow-ups and immediately after the surgery, there was a significant difference between the two groups in terms of the implant stability quotient (ISQ) scores (P > 0.05). At t0, the test and control groups' respective mean levels of marginal bone loss around the implants were 0.4836 mm and 0.7343 mm, significantly different from the corresponding values at t6. On the other hand, marginal bone loss around the implant was not significantly different between the two groups in t0 and t6 (P = 0.532). CONCLUSIONS L-PRF did not improve the RFA outcomes of implants three months after implant placement, and changes in the ISQ values over time were the same in both groups. In addition, L-PRF had no superior effect on the marginal bone loss around the implants. Abstract
PURPOSE This randomized controlled trial aimed to evaluate the effect of implants' two different diameters and cantilever lengths on the marginal bone loss and stability of mplants supporting maxillary prostheses. MATERIALS AND METHODS Ninety-six implants were placed in sixteen completely edentulous maxillary ridges. Patients were randomly divided into two groups: Group A, implants were placed with a cantilever to anterior-posterior AP spread length (CL:AP) at a ratio of 1:3; Group B, implants were placed with a CL:AP at a ratio of 1:2. Patients were further divided into four sub-groups: Groups A1, A2, B1, and B2. Groups A1 and B1 received small diameter implants while Groups A2 and B2 received standard diameter implants. Bone height and stability measurements around each implant were performed at 0, 4, 8 and 24 months after definitive prostheses delivery. RESULTS Statistical analysis of the mean implant stability and height values revealed an insignificant difference between Group A1 and Group A2 at all the different time intervals while significantly higher values in Group B1 in comparison with Group B2. Results also showed significantly higher values in Group A1 in comparison with Group B1 and an insignificant difference between Group A2 and Group B2 at all the different time intervals. CONCLUSION It can be concluded that the use of small diameter implants placed with a CL:AP at a ratio of 1:3 provided predictable results and that the 1:2 CL:AP significantly induced more critical bone loss in the small diameter implants group, which can significantly reduce long term success and survival of implants.

Abstract
The present study aimed to confirm the usefulness of a multi-laser handpiece system currently under development. Implants were placed in the tibia of rabbits using a conventional separate laser-implant handpiece system (control group; SurgicPro+; NSK, Kanuma, Japan and Epic 10; Biolase, Irvine, CA, USA) and a multi-laser handpiece system (experimental group; BLP 10; Saeshin, Daegu, Korea). Implants were placed in left and right tibias of five rabbits using a conventional laser-implant handpiece system and a multi-laser handpiece system (N = 5 per group). Subsequently, micro-computed tomography (micro-CT; bone-to-implant contact evaluation), implant stability quotient (ISQ) measurement, and histological evaluations were performed to confirm the implant placement results. The independent t-test and the paired t-test were used to compare the ISQ values and the results of the two implant-laser handpiece groups (α = 0.05), respectively. No statistically significant difference in micro-CT, ISQ, and histological evaluations was observed between implant placement by the two systems (p > 0.05) except implant initial stability. The use of the multi-laser handpiece system is expected to produce the same results as a conventional separate laser-implant handpiece system with the higher implant initial stability. Additionally, it will potentially make the clinical environment more pleasant and will provide convenience for the clinicians.

Abstract
The high primary stability of dental implants provides a favorable prognosis for orthopedic treatment with implant-supported structures. The importance of assessing the stability and the bone tissue surrounding the implant as a whole is due to the fact that the process of osseointegration is a structural and functional connection between the bone and the loaded surface of the implant. Determination of the dynamics of the stability of dental implants allows timely monitoring of unpredictable changes at the stages of osseointegration and remodeling of bone tissue around the implant. Currently, in addition to clinical and radiation diagnostic methods, there are generally recognized by clinicians frequency resonance analysis and periotestometry. However, there are some scientific discrepancies indicating the lack of objectivity of these methods and the impossibility of their full-fledged application without the support of radiation and clinical diagnostic methods. In addition to these methods, there are many experimental and less common methods in clinical practice for assessing the primary stability of implants, but with reasonable objectivity. Thus, the reasons are given that for a full assessment of the relationship between the efforts exerted on implants and their movements in the space of bone tissue, devices are needed that reflect the stability and density of the contact of the implant with bone tissue in physical quantities. In particular, methods based on lasers, sound, quantitative ultrasound, and others have found experimental practical application. The ultrasound method of assessing the primary stability of the implant is estimated as the most promising, since it allows you to demonstrate the results of studies in certain physical quantities, as well as to compare these results with histomorphological indicators of osseointegration of dental implants.

Abstract
Stabilization of dental implants by means of biomaterials such as bioceramic granules and cements is currently compromised by the poor mechanical properties of these bioceramics. Recently, our group developed a calcium phosphate cement reinforced with poly(vinyl alcohol) fibers with improved flexural strength and toughness. Herein we evaluated the capacity of these fiber-reinforced calcium phosphate cements to stabilize dental implants in vitro and in vivo using a range of mechanical and biological test methods. In vitro, filling of circumferential crestal peri‑implant bone defects with synthetic bone analogues with fiber-reinforced calcium phosphate cement demonstrated superior implant stability as compared to fiber-free calcium phosphate cement over a 12-week period. Similarly, filling of circumferential crestal peri‑implant bone defects with fiber-reinforced calcium phosphate cement effectively stabilized dental implants installed in a rabbit femoral condyle defect as assessed via both Implant Stability Quotient (ISQ) and torque-out measurements. Moreover, histological and histomorphometric evaluation demonstrated the osteocompatibility of fiber-reinforced calcium phosphate cement, as evidenced by absence of soft tissue ingrowth, direct contact between the bone and cement, and gradual degradation of the biomaterial and replacement by newly-formed bone. These data demonstrate that fiber-reinforced calcium phosphate cement stabilize dental implants during osseointegration. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: Dental implants can be placed immediately after a tooth is removed. However, in some cases the implant might not have enough bone surrounding it and becomes loose. To solve this, bioceramics have been used to fill the implant-bone gap. However, these materials have poor mechanical properties and are often not capable to stabilize the implant. Recently, our research group developed a new bone cement that is reinforced with fibers and has, therefore, enhanced mechanical properties. In this study, we have proven that by molding this cement into the implant-bone gap, we stabilize the implant and allow for a direct connection between the implant and the surrounding bone. Using this innovative cement is therefore a safe and efficient way of stabilizing dental implants.

Abstract
The purpose of the present study was to measure and compare the insertion torque, removal torque, and the implant stability quotient by resonance frequency analysis in different polyurethane block densities of two implant macrogeometries. Four different polyurethane synthetic bone blocks were used with three cortical thickness: Bone 1 with a cortical thickness of 1 mm, Bone 2 with a cortical thickness of 2 mm, Bone 3 with a cortical thickness of 3 mm, and Bone 4, which was totally cortical. Four groups were created in accordance with the implant macrogeometry (n = 10 per group) and surface treatment: G1—regular implant design without surface treatment; G2—regular implant design with surface treatment; G3—new implant design without surface treatment; G4—new implant design with surface treatment. All implants used were 4 mm in diameter and 10 mm in length and manufactured in commercially pure titanium (grade IV) by Implacil De Bortoli (São Paulo, Brazil). The implants were installed using a computed torque machine, and following installation of the implant, the stability quotient (implant stability quotient, ISQ) values were measured in two directions using Osstell devices. The data were analyzed by considering the 5% level of significance. All implant groups showed similar mean ISQ values without statistical differences (p > 0.05), for the same synthetic bone block: for Bone 1, the value was 57.7 ± 3.0; for Bone 2, it was 58.6 ± 2.2; for Bone 3, it was 60.6 ± 2.3; and for Bone 4, it was 68.5 ± 2.8. However, the insertion torque showed similar higher values for the regular macrogeometry (G1 and G2 groups) in comparison with the new implant macrogeometry (G3 and G4 groups). The analysis of the results found that primary stability does not simply depend on the insertion torque but also on the bone quality. In comparison with the regular implant macrogeometry, the new implant macrogeometry decreased the insertion torque without affecting the implant stability quotient values.

Abstract
PURPOSE We aimed to retrospectively evaluate the radiographic and clinical results and the success rate of short implants with a laser-microgrooved collar (≤7.5 mm) placed in the posterior areas after up to 3 to 5 years of function and the possible influence of several variables-such as gender, periodontitis, smoking habit, location, implant stability at placement, and prosthetic fixation design-on implant marginal bone loss (MBL). MATERIALS AND METHODS A chart review was used for this multicenter study, which involved 5 private dental clinics. All patients had been treated with short dental implants with a laser-microgrooved collar from January 2012 to December 2015. RESULTS A total of 174 patients (99 male and 75 female patients; mean age, 51.6 ± 2.8 years) with 254 implants were evaluated. Seven short implants failed. The cumulative success rate was 97.2%, without a statistically significant difference between implants placed in the posterior maxilla and mandible. The mean MBL was 0.18 ± 0.7 mm at the mesial aspect and 0.19 ± 0.6 mm at the distal aspect. No statistical relationships were found between MBL and gender, periodontitis, smoking habit, location, implant stability at placement, and prosthetic fixation design. CONCLUSIONS At the end of the 3- to 5-year follow-up period, short implants with a laser-microgrooved collar (≤7.5 mm) in the posterior areas yielded a relatively high cumulative success rate. The laser-microgrooved collar implant maintained stable marginal bone levels. No investigated variable was statistically associated with MBL.

Abstract
Purpose: The objective of this study was to assess the influence of a novel surface of dental implants (ContacTi®) on the osseointegration process in a minipig model. The surface was compared with other existing surfaces on the market (SLA® and SLActive®) by employing bone implant contact analysis (BIC) and implant stability. Method: Twelve minipigs were used with prior authorisation from an ethics committee. Three types of surfaces were tested: SLA® (sand-blasted acid-etched titanium), SLActive® (same but hydrophilic, performed under a nitrogen atmosphere), and ContacTi® (alumina particle bombardment of titanium, bioactivated when treated thermochemically) in 4.1 mm × 8 mm implants with internal connection and a polished neck. Twelve implants of each surface type (N = 36) were placed, sacrificing 1/3 of the animals at 2 weeks of placement, 1/3 at 4 weeks and the remaining 1/3 at 8 weeks. Numerical variables were compared with Analysis of Variance, and the correlation between ISQ and BIC was established with the Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient. Results: SLActive® and ContacTi® surfaces showed elevated osteoconductivity at 4 weeks, maintaining a similar evolution at 8 weeks (large amount of mature lamellar tissue with high maturity and bone quality). The SLA® surface showed slower maturation. The ISQ values in surgery were elevated (above 65), higher at necropsy and higher at 4 and 8 weeks in the SLA® group than in the other two (SLActive® and ContacTi®). No significant correlation was found between ISQ and BIC for each implant surface and necropsy time. Conclusion: The three surfaces analysed showed high RFA and BIC values, which were more favourable for the SLActive® and ContacTi® surfaces. No statistical correlation was found between the RFA and BIC values in any of the three surfaces analysed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Diagnostic instruments based on resonance frequency analysis (RFA) can be utilised to assess dental implant stability during treatment and follow-up. AIM The aim of the present study was to investigate the influence of patient- and implant-related factors on implant stability and the 5-year implant survival. In addition, the influence of stability (ISQ value) at placement and abutment connection on implant survival was evaluated. MATERIALS AND METHODS RFA measurements from a total of 334 consecutive patients with 745 dental implants (Neoss Ltd., Harrogate, UK) were retrospectively analysed after at least 5 years in function. Statistics were used to evaluate the influence of the different variables on implant stability and implant survival. Odds ratio calculations were performed to compare the risk for implant failure using 60, 65, 70, and 75 ISQ as threshold levels at placement and loading. RESULTS A total of 20 implant failures in 14 patients were noted during the 5 years of follow-up, giving an overall cumulative survival rate (CSR) of 97.3% at the implant level and 95.8% at the patient level. Gender, jaw, position, bone quality, and implant diameter had an influence on implant stability at placement. Jaw, bone quality, and implant diameter had an influence on stability after 3-4 months of healing. More failures were observed in full than in partial rehabilitations. Age, gender, jaw, position, bone quantity, bone quality, implant diameter, and implant length had no influence on implant survival. Implants with ISQ values below the threshold levels showed lower survival rates compared to implants with values above these levels. CONCLUSIONS The present study showed a significantly higher risk for implant failure, showing an ISQ value below 70 and 75 at placement or after 3-4 months of healing. The results indicate that RFA measurements can be used to identify implants with increased risk for failure.

Abstract
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM Recent research has shown that dynamic parameters correlate with insertion energy-that is, the total work needed to place an implant into its site-might convey more reliable information concerning immediate implant primary stability at insertion than the commonly used insertion torque (IT), the reverse torque (RT), or the implant stability quotient (ISQ). Yet knowledge on these dynamic parameters is still limited. PURPOSE The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate whether an energy-related parameter, the torque-depth curve integral (I), could be a reliable measure of primary stability. This was done by assessing if (I) measurement was operator-independent, by investigating its correlation with other known primary stability parameters (IT, RT, or ISQ) by quantifying the (I) average error and correlating (I), IT, RT, and ISQ variations with bone density. MATERIAL AND METHODS Five operators placed 200 implants in polyurethane foam blocks of different densities using a micromotor that calculated the (I) during implant placement. Primary implant stability was assessed by measuring the ISQ, IT, and RT. ANOVA tests were used to evaluate whether measurements were operator independent (P>.05 in all cases). A correlation analysis was performed between (I) and IT, ISQ, and RT. The (I) average error was calculated and compared with that of the other parameters by ANOVA. (I)-density, IT-density, ISQ-density, and RT-density plots were drawn, and their slopes were compared by ANCOVA. RESULTS The (I) measurements were operator independent and correlated with IT, ISQ, and RT. The average error of these parameters was not significantly different (P>.05 in all cases). The (I)-density, IT-density, ISQ-density, and RT-density curves were linear in the 0.16 to 0.49 g/cm³ range, with the (I)-density curves having a significantly greater slope than those regarding the other parameters (P≤.001 in all cases). CONCLUSIONS The torque-depth curve integral (I) provides a reliable assessment of primary stability and shows a greater sensitivity to density variations than other known primary stability parameters.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The aim of this randomized controlled clinical study was to analyze the bone microarchitecture at augmented maxillary sinus sites by using different materials in patients to compare the effect of porous titanium granules as a sinus augmentation material with bone microstructural features. MATERIALS AND METHODS Eight subjects with bilateral atrophic posterior maxilla of residual bone height <4 mm included in this study and each patient was treated with bilateral sinus augmentation procedure using xenograft with equine origin (Apatos, Osteobiol; Tecnoss Dental) and xenograft (1 g) + porous titanium (1 g) granules (Natix; Tigran Technologies AB). Sixteen human bone biopsy samples were taken from patients receiving two-stage sinus augmentation therapy during implant installation and analyzed using microcomputerized tomography. Three-dimensional bone structural parameters were analyzed in details: tissue volume, bone volume, percentage of bone volume, bone surface and bone surface density, bone specific surface, trabecular thickness trabecular separation, trabecular number, trabecular pattern factor, structural model index, fractal dimension, and bone mineral density. RESULTS No statistically significant differences were found between groups according to bone structural parameters. CONCLUSIONS Porous titanium grafts may ensure a space for new bone formation in the granules, which may be a clinical advantage for long-term success.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Dental implant-retained overdentures have been chosen as the treatment of choice for complete mandibular removable dentures. Dental implants, such as mini dental implants, and components for retaining overdentures, are commercially available. However, comparative clinical studies comparing mini dental implants and conventional dental implants using different attachment for implant-retained overdentures have not been well documented. PURPOSE To compare the clinical outcomes of using two mini dental implants with Equator® attachments, four mini dental implants with Equator attachments, or two conventional dental implants with ball attachments, by means of a randomized clinical trial. MATERIALS AND METHODS Sixty patients received implant-retained mandibular overdentures in the interforaminal region. The patients were divided into three groups. In Groups 1 and 2, two and four mini dental implants, respectively, were placed and immediately loaded by overdentures, using Equator® attachments. In Group 3, conventional implants were placed. After osseointegration, the implants were loaded by overdentures, using ball attachments. The study distribution was randomized and double-blinded. Outcome measures included changes in radiological peri-implant bone level from surgery to 12 months postinsertion, prosthodontic complications and patient satisfaction. RESULTS The cumulative survival rate in the three clinical groups after one year was 100%. There was no significant difference (p < 0.05) in clinical results regarding the number (two or four) of mini dental implants with Equator attachments. However, there was a significant difference in marginal bone loss and patient satisfaction between those receiving mini dental implants with Equator attachments and conventional dental implants with ball attachments. The marginal bone resorption in Group 3 was significantly higher than in Groups 1 and 2 (p < 0.05); there were no significant differences between Groups 1 and 2. There was no significant difference in patient satisfaction between Groups 1 and 2 but it was significantly higher than that in Group3 (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Two and four mini dental implants can be immediately used successfully for retaining lower complete dentures, as shown after a 1-year follow up.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Primary stability is evaluated using resonance frequency analysis (RFA) and insertion torque (IT). Although there is a strong correlation between RFA and IT, studies failed to find a correlation between RFA and bone to implant contact (BIC) or IT and BIC. OBJECTIVE To compare RFA, IT, and BIC of SLA, SLActive, Euroteknika, and TiUnite implant surfaces and evaluate the correlation between them. MATERIALS AND METHODS Thirty-two implants were placed in 8 sheep. RFA and IT were recorded. Animals were killed at 1 and 2 months. RESULTS A significant difference was found in RFA between the 4 surfaces. No significant difference was found for IT. Mean BIC was different between all 4 surfaces. A significant positive correlation was found between RFA and IT with SLA. No significant correlation was found between RFA and BIC and between IT and BIC at 1 and 2 months. CONCLUSIONS Implants with 4 different surfaces have similar IT values but different RFA and BIC. Additionally irrespective of the implant surface, there is no correlation between IT and BIC and between RFA and BIC.

Abstract
Purpose: This study compares the prognosis (the survival rate and marginal bone loss) of resorbable blasting media (RBM) surface implants and sandblasting with large-grit and acid-etching (SLA) surface implants in the early loading. Methods: This study targeted 123 patients treated by implants installation from January 2008 to March 2010. The loading was initiated in the maxilla within three to four months and in the mandible within one to two months. The types of restoration were single crown and fixed partial prosthesis. Those functioned over one year. The implants were classified by the surface of implants as Group 1: RBM surface (GS III; OSSTEM, Busan, Korea) and, Group 2: SLA surface (Superline; Dentium, Seoul, Korea). The groups were categorized by maxilla and mandible and compared by survival rate, marginal bone loss through clinical records evaluation, and radiographic measurements. Results: The marginal bone loss in the maxilla was 0.14±0.34 mm (Group 1) and 0.30±0.37 mm (Group 2), a statistically significant difference (P <0.05). In the mandible those were 0.28±0.54 mm (Group 1) and 0.20±0.33 mm (Group 2), not significant (P >0.05). There was no significant difference of marginal bone loss between maxilla and mandible by groups. During observation there was no implant failure, a survival rate of 100%. Conclusion: Both surfaces showed an excellent survival rate, and the marginal bone loss was not substantial.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Resonance frequency analysis (RFA) is applied clinically for the assessment of implant stability, and the relevance of this application is widely accepted. However, the relationship between resonance frequency (RF) and other parameters of implant stability, such as the histomorphometrical bone-to-implant contact (BIC) parameter, has become controversial in the last decade. OBJECTIVE To analyse and clarify the controversial relationship between RF and histomorphometrical BIC measurements. MATERIAL AND METHODS A total of 36 dental implants (9 mm length, Ø 4.0 mm; Biohorizons(®) Implant Systems Inc., Birmingham, AL, USA) with a soluble blasting media (sandblasting with soluble particles) surface were implanted in six beagle dog mandibles. RFA assessments were performed with a magnetic Osstel Mentor(®) device at the time of implant installation, and during the monitoring period at weeks 1, 2, 4, 6 and 8, before implant retrieval. The dogs were sacrificed and the implants were removed in block after 8, 6, 4, 2, 1 and 0 weeks, respectively. One group was obtained at time 0, immediately after the implantation. The samples were embedded in methyl methacrylate polymers (Technovit(®) ) and cut along their long axis. BIC values were assessed by a non-subjective and systematic method based on backscattered scanning electron microscopy (BS-SEM) images. BIC% at the different time points was compared with the corresponding implant stability quotient (ISQ) values of the RFA assessment. RESULTS No statistically significant correlation between BIC and ISQ values (Osstell Mentor(®) ) was identified. The absence of a relationship between these two parameters is in agreement with several previous studies in humans and experimental animals. CONCLUSIONS The lack of correlation between BIC and ISQ values suggests that ISQ as determined by RFA is not able to identify the relationship between RF and histomorphometrical data.

Abstract
OBJETIVO: A proposta do estudo foi avaliar a influência do formato e do tratamento de superfície na estabilidade primária de implantes odontológicos, inseridos em diferentes substratos, utilizando-se associação de métodos, como torque de inserção, resistência ao arrancamento e frequência de ressonância. MATERIAL E MÉTODO: Foram utilizados 32 implantes da marca Conexão® (Conexão Sistemas de Prótese Ltda, Arujá, São Paulo, Brasil), sendo: oito cilíndricos com tratamento Porous (CA), oito cilíndricos usinados (MS), oito cilíndricos tratamento duplo Porous (MP) e oito cônicos sem tratamento (CC). Os substratos utilizados para inserção foram: costela de porco; poliuretana Synbone©; poliuretana Nacional® (15, 20, 40 PCF), e madeira. O torque de inserção (TI) foi quantificado utilizando-se um torquímetro digital Kratos®; a força de arrancamento (RA) foi aferida por meio de tração axial, realizada em uma Máquina Universal de Ensaios (Emic® DL-10000), e utilizou-se também análise por meio de frequência de ressonância (RF). Para obtenção dos resultados estatísticos, utilizou-se análise de variância e teste de Tukey (significância de 5%). RESULTADO: Ao analisar o torque de inserção, verificou-se que os implantes com tratamento de superfície não foram diferentes estatisticamente dos usinados, assim como os implantes cilíndricos não tiveram diferença dos cônicos em todos os substratos (p>0,05), com exceção da poliuretana Synbone©. Em relação à resistência ao arrancamento, os implantes tratados e usinados, assim como cônicos e cilíndricos, não tiveram diferença estatística (p>0,05); a análise de frequência de ressonância mostrou que não houve diferença entre os implantes (p>0,05), com exceção da poliuretana Nacional® (20 PCF). CONCLUSÃO: Os formatos e o tratamento de superfície estudados não demonstraram valores significantes quando foram comparados os implantes entre si e, considerando os substratos avaliados, não houve diferença estatística entre os diferentes tipos de implantes.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study investigated the effects of gender on the three-dimensional (3D) bone mineral density (BMD) and micromorphology of the trabeculae of matured autogenous bone grafts after sinus floor augmentation, and compared them to those of adjacent native bone. MATERIALS AND METHODS Ten bone biopsy samples were removed from the implant placement areas of patients who had received second-stage sinus floor augmentation, and analyzed by microcomputed tomography. BMD phantoms with two calcium hydroxyapatite densities (0.25 and 0.75 g/cm(3)) were used to determine the BMD of the grafted and native bone samples. The 3D structural parameters of the trabeculae, including percentage of bone volume (bone volume/tissue volume, BV/TV), trabecular thickness (Tb.Th), trabecular number, trabecular separation, trabecular pattern factor (Tb.Pf), and structure model index, were analyzed between males and females and between grafted bone and native bone. RESULTS No significant gender-specific differences in BMD and 3D trabecular structure of either native or grafted bone were found (P > 0.05). Compared to the adjacent native bone, the autogenous grafted bone exhibited lower BV/TV and Tb.Th as well as a higher Tb.Pf (P < 0.05). Additionally, there was a weak positive correlation between the Tb.Th values of grafted and native bone (R (2) = 0.58). CONCLUSIONS In the maxillary sinus, autogenous grafted bone exhibited lower BV/TV, Tb.Th, and trabecular connectivity than the adjacent native bone. No significant gender-specific differences were found for either the BMD or 3D trabecular structure of grafted bone. CLINICAL RELEVANCE After bone remodeling, autogenous grafted bone revealed different 3D trabecular structure as compared to native bone.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The purpose of this study was to determine the correlation between the peak insertion torque value (ITV) of a dental implant and the bone-implant contact percentage (BIC%). MATERIAL AND METHODS Dental implants were inserted into specimens comprising a 2-mm-thick artificial cortical shell representing cortical bone and artificial foam bone representing cancellous bone with four densities (groups 1 to 4--0.32, 0.20, 0.16, and 0.12 g/cm(3)). Each specimen with an inserted implant was subjected to micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) scanning, from which the 3D BIC% values were calculated. Pearson's correlation coefficients (r) between the ITV and BIC% were calculated. RESULTS The ITVs in groups 1 to 4 were 56.2 ± 4.6 (mean±standard deviation), 45.6 ± 0.9, 43.3 ± 4.3, and 38.5 ± 3.4 N cm, respectively, and the corresponding BIC% values were 41.5 ± 0.5%, 39.0 ± 1.0%, 30.8 ± 1.1%, and 26.2 ± 1.6%. Pearson's correlation coefficient between the ITV and BIC% was r = 0.797 (P < 0.0001). CONCLUSION The initial implant stability, quantified as the ITV, was strongly positively correlated with the 3D BIC% obtained from micro-CT images. CLINICAL RELEVANCE The ITV of a dental implant can be used to predict the initial BIC%; this information may provide the clinician with important information on the optimal loading time.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The objective of this study was to assess the primary stability of different orthodontic mini-implants inserted into different maxillary and mandibular regions of swine. MATERIAL AND METHODS One hundred eighty orthodontic mini-implants produced by 5 different manufacturers, all presenting several shapes, were divided into 5 groups: Mondeal (M), Neodent (N), SIN (S), INP, and Titanium Fix (T). Fifteen pigs (Sus scrofa piau) were used for study and 12 mini-implants were inserted into 3 mandibular and maxillary regions. After insertion, the animals were killed and osseous blocks containing the mini-implants were obtained for mechanical pullout tests to be performed by a universal test machine at cross-head speed of 0.5 mm/s. Maximum force values (N/cm) for insertion were recorded and submitted to both analysis of variance and Tukey's test. RESULTS The primary stability provided by cylindrical mini-implants (groups M and I) was statistically significantly superior to that of conical mini-implants (groups N and S). On the other hand, screw-type mini-implants were shown to be statistically inferior compared with the others (P < .05). Statistical differences between pullout forces at different oral cavity regions were also found (P < .05). The mini-implants inserted into palatal suture had lesser stability, whereas those inserted into upper molar and premolar regions were shown to be more stable. CONCLUSIONS The shape of mini-implants, in association with location of insertion, is directly related to primary stability.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to determine the relationships and differences in three-dimensional (3D) bone mineral density (BMD) and microtrabecular structures between autogenous bone grafts and their adjacent native bone after a healing period following maxillary sinus augmentation. MATERIALS AND METHODS Nine rod-shaped human bone biopsy samples were taken from patients receiving two-stage sinus augmentation therapy in implantation areas and analyzed using microcomputed tomography (micro-CT). Before micro-CT scanning, two BMD phantoms were placed near to the bone biopsy samples for executing BMD calculations of the grafted and native bone samples. In addition, 3D structural parameters of the trabeculae were analyzed for both the grafted and native bone, including percentage of bone volume [bone volume (BV)/tissue volume (TV)], bone-specific surface [bone surface (BS)/BV], trabecular thickness (Tb.Th), trabecular number (Tb.N), trabecular separation (Tb.Sp), trabecular pattern factor (Tb.Pf), and structure model index (SMI). RESULTS No significant correlations with regard to BMD and trabecular-structure parameters were found between native bone and grafted bone; however, BS/BV and Tb.Pf were higher and Tb.Th and Tb.Sp were 37.35% and 12.74% lower in grafted bone than in native bone. For grafted bone, there were significant correlations (P < 0.05) between BMD and BV/TV, and Tb.N. CONCLUSIONS When using autogenous bone as a graft material, BMD and micromorphological conditions of grafted bone were not influenced by the condition of the native bone in the maxilla. Differences were found in surface complexity, trabecular thickness, trabecular separation, and the connectivity of trabeculae between grafted and native bone. The BMD in grafted bone was affected by the quantity of the trabeculae.

The study was designed to determine the relationship between implant stability quotient (ISQ) values measured using resonance frequency analysis (RFA) and implant-bone distance measured histomorphometrically. Ten identical implants were equally divided into 2 groups based on primary stability at placement. Osteotomies were prepared in harvested goat femurs. ISQ values were measured and compared with implant-bone distance determined by micrometry. Based on the results, it was concluded that RFA can be used to measure implant stability reliably.

Abstract
PURPOSE Implant stability quotient (ISQ) values have been supposed to predict implant stability. However, the relationship between ISQ values and bone-to-implant contact ratio (BIC%) which is one of the predictors of implant stability is still unclear. The aim of the present study was to evaluate initial ISQ values in relation to BIC% using rabbit model. MATERIALS AND METHODS Four New Zealand white rabbits received a total of 16 implants in their tibia. Immediately after implant placement ISQ values were assessed. The measurements were repeated at the time of sacrifice of the rabbits after 4 weeks. Peri-implant bone regeneration was assessed histomorphometrically by measuring BIC% and bone volume to total volume values (bone volume %). The relationships between ISQ values and the histomorphometric output were assessed, and then, the osseointegration prediction model via the initial ISQ values was processed. RESULTS Initial ISQ values showed significant correlation with the BIC%. The bone volume % did not show any significant association with the ISQ values. CONCLUSION In the limitation of this study, resonance frequency analysis is a useful clinical method to predict the BIC% values and examine the implant stability.

Abstract
One of the most important phases of oral health is the form and function of the oral mechanism. Recently, pediatric dentists are concerned with the obvious esthetic disabilities and the pathologic implications of the malposed teeth. Interceptive and functional orthodontic treatment is playing a major role in these discrepancies. Anchorage is an important consideration in orthodontics, particularly if force is applied entirely to the teeth. For many years, clinicians have searched for a form of anchorage that does not rely on patient cooperation. During the last few decades, a wealth of new information has accumulated to such an extent that the present authors thought it appropriate to let these advances make an impact by suggesting a revised definition and classification of anchorage. This paper also gives a brief insight on evolution of anchorage and its application in pediatric dentistry.

Abstract
PURPOSE To study the relationships between insertional torque values (ITVs) recorded during implant placement and implant healing times and cumulative survival rates. MATERIALS AND METHODS This retrospective study evaluated 174 Osseotite 6.0-mm-diameter, straight-wall, threaded dental implants (BIOMET 3i, Palm Beach Gardens, FL) placed in 172 consecutive patients by the primary author. All implants were placed immediately into mandibular first or second molar extraction sockets after extraction. ITVs were recorded at placement. Implants were evaluated 3 months after surgery before discharge to restorative dentists for restoration. The post-restorative follow-up ranged from 2 years 1 month to 4 years 8 months (median and mean of 3 years 1 month [SD, 4.95]). RESULTS Of the implants, 3% (n = 5) were removed at the time of surgical placement because of perceived clinical mobility of the implants within the osteotomies. The implants that were stable at the time of implant placement (n = 169) were placed into 1 of 3 groups relative to the specific ITVs at implant placement: group 1, low ITV, 29% (n = 49); group 2, medium ITV, 23% (n = 39); and group 3, high ITV, 48% (n = 81). Cumulative survival rates for each group were 86% for low ITV, 90% for medium ITV, and 96% for high ITV (P = .0302). At the scheduled 3 months' follow-up visit, 33% of the low ITVs, 21% of the medium ITVs, and 5% of the high ITVs required an additional 3 months of healing. CONCLUSION In this study ITVs measured through surgical handpieces during implant placement provided meaningful real-time feedback that aided the surgeon regarding implant survival and determining unloaded healing times on a case-by-case basis.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To monitor the development of the stability of Straumann tissue-level implants during the early phases of healing by resonance frequency analysis (RFA) and to determine the influence of implant surface modification and diameter. MATERIAL AND METHODS A total of twenty-five 10 mm length implants including 12 SLA RN v4.1 mm implants, eight SLActive RN v4.1 mm implants and five SLA WN v4.8 mm implants were placed. Implant stability quotient (ISQ) values were determined with Osstell mentor at baseline, 4 days, 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8 and 12 weeks post-surgery. ISQ values were compared between implant types using unpaired t-tests and longitudinally within implant types using paired t-tests. RESULTS During healing, ISQ decreased by 3-4 values after installation and reached the lowest values at 3 weeks. Following this, the ISQ values increased steadily for all implants and up to 12 weeks. No significant differences were noted over time. The longitudinal changes in the ISQ values showed the same patterns for SLA implants, SLActive implants and WB implants. At placement, the mean ISQ values were 72.6, 75.7 and 74.4, respectively. The mean lowest ISQ values, recorded at 3 weeks, were 69.9, 71.4 and 69.8, respectively. At 12 weeks, the mean ISQ values were 76.5, 78.8 and 77.8, respectively. The mean ISQ values at all observation periods did not differ significantly among the various types. Single ISQ values ranged from 55 to 84 during the entire healing period. Pocket probing depths of the implants ranged from 1 to 3 mm and bleeding on probing from 0 to 2 sites/implant post-surgically. CONCLUSIONS All ISQ values indicated the stability of Straumann implants over a 12-week healing period. All implants showed a slight decrease after installation, with the lowest ISQ values being reached at 3 weeks. ISQ values were restored 8 weeks post-surgically. It is recommended to monitor implant stability by RFA at 3 and 8 weeks post-surgically. However, neither implant surface modifications (SLActive) nor implant diameter were revealed by RFA.

Abstract
Ten identical implants were equally divided into 2 groups. In the immediate placement (control) group, implants were placed immediately following osteotomy preparation, and in the delayed placement (test) group, implants were placed 2 weeks following osteotomy preparation, in rabbit femurs. Implant stability quotient values for both groups were measured using resonance frequency analysis immediately following placement and at day 40. Results were statistically analyzed and indicate that delayed placement of implants leads to faster rates of osseointegration.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE A precise and scientifically established method for the evaluation of the bone quality/primary stability is the measure of the insertion torque (IT). The aim of this study was a comparison between the IT values and the bone-implant contact percentage (BIC) of human implants retrieved after a 4/8-week healing period. MATERIALS Seventeen implants, all with a sandblasted and acid-etched surface, were evaluated in the present study. METHODS The implants had been retrieved for different causes, after 4/8 weeks, with a 5 mm trephine bur, and immersed in 10% buffered formalin to be processed for histology. RESULTS A not statistically significant correlation was found between IT and BIC (P<or=0.892). CONCLUSIONS In the present study on human-retrieved implants, no statistically significant correlation was found between the IT values and BIC. These results could be due to a lack of relationship between bone structure and IT, or to the fact that primary stability may not only be influenced by bone volumetrical density and/or bone trabecular connectivity but also by the thickness and density of the cortical layer. Moreover, the present knowledge of the bone microstructure is not enough to explain the relationship of bone quality and primary implant stability.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Primary stability has a relevant role in the long-term success of dental implants. A quantitative method for the measurement of implant stability has been introduced (resonance frequency analysis [RFA]). Information about the significance of RFA measurements and about the relationship between RFA values and their association with implant osseointegration, success, or failure is important from a clinical point of view. PURPOSE The aim of the present histological and histomorphometric study was to see if a correlation existed between the bone-implant contact (BIC) percentage of retrieved human implants and RFA values. MATERIALS AND METHODS Seven implants inserted in the posterior mandible, with a sandblasted and acid-etched surface and retrieved after a 6-month period, were evaluated in the present study. These seven implants had been retrieved for different causes. All these implants were submerged and were retrieved with a 5-mm trephine bur and immersed in 10% buffered formalin to be processed for histology. RESULTS A statistically significant correlation could be detected between implant stability quotient and BIC (p=.016). CONCLUSIONS Even if the relationship between bone structure and RFA is still not fully understood, in our study, a statistically significant correlation was found between RFA and BIC values. Further studies are needed to evaluate a correlation of RFA and BIC in human implants retrieved after a range of healing periods.
