Abstract
Due to increasing life expectancy and the associated demographic changes, more and more people are dependent on care. To identify a possible need for dental treatment, chewing function tests as assessment instruments have proven their effectiveness. In this article, the reader is given an overview of existing chewing function tests and their implementation. It is important that a patient with pain should be presented to a dentist immediately, regardless of whether a chewing function test is performed. Furthermore, chewing function tests are not a substitute for routine dental examinations, but they could provide information to (dental) laypersons as to whether an appointment should be arranged in a dental practice or whether a dental consultation is necessary.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This crossover clinical study aimed to evaluate and compare masticatory performance and patient satisfaction for patients rehabilitated with conventional heat-cured acrylic resin and 3D-printed mandibular implant overdentures retained with bar attachment. MATERIALS AND METHODS Sixteen completely edentulous healthy participants received new conventional dentures. In the mandible, four interforaminal implants were inserted. Following the stage of osseointegration, the bar was constructed in a trapezoidal configuration. Each patient randomly received the following overdentures using a crossover design: (1) conventional heat-cured acrylic resin overdenture and (2) 3D-printed overdenture (developed by scanning of mandibular conventional overdenture). The masticatory performance was assessed by conducting a two-colour mixing ability test at 5, 10, 20, 30, and 50 masticatory cycles. Moreover, the McGill Denture Satisfaction Questionnaire (MDSQ) was employed to assess patient satisfaction. Evaluation was performed after 3 months of using each overdenture. Paired sample t tests were used to compare the masticatory performance and MDSQ scores of patients for both prostheses. RESULTS No significant difference in masticatory performance was reported between the two types of overdentures. Regarding patient satisfaction, only the esthetic aspect was significantly better for conventionally processed overdentures than for printed overdentures. Insignificant differences were observed regarding other MDSQ items between the two overdentures. CONCLUSION Within this clinical study, 3D-printed implant overdentures showed promising results in terms of chewing efficiency and patient satisfaction compared to conventionally fabricated implant overdentures. Abstract
Patients who are edentulous experience challenges with their dentures, especially the mandibular ones. The primary concerns of these patients include reduced chewing efficiency, instability, and loss of retention. With the advancement of implants and prosthetic options, these concerns can be addressed by resorting to implant-supported fixed and removable prostheses. The impetuous use of dental implants to solve these issues leads to inadvertent failures in the treatment undertaken. Improper planning of cases leads to prosthesis breakage and implant failures leaving the patient dissatisfied. One such case of rehabilitation of a completely edentulous over-denture patient with ailing implants is described in this clinical report.

Abstract
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM Cantilevered complete arch implant-supported prostheses are commonly fabricated from zirconia and more recently from strength gradient zirconia. Different polymer-based materials indicated for definitive fixed prostheses that could be used with additive or subtractive manufacturing have also been marketed recently. However, knowledge on the long-term fatigue behavior of cantilevered implant-supported prostheses made from these polymer-based materials and strength gradient zirconia is lacking. PURPOSE The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the fatigue behavior of implant-supported cantilevered prostheses of recently introduced computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing polymers and zirconia. MATERIAL AND METHODS A master standard tessellation language file of a 9×11×20-mm specimen with a titanium base (Ti-base) space that represented an implant-supported cantilevered prosthesis was used to fabricate specimens from additively manufactured interim resin (AM), polymethyl methacrylate (SM-PM), nanographene-reinforced polymethyl methacrylate (SM-GR), high-impact polymer composite resin (SM-CR), and strength gradient zirconia (SM-ZR) (n=10). Each specimen was prepared by following the respective manufacturer's recommendations, and Ti-base abutments were cemented with an autopolymerizing luting composite resin. After cementation, the specimens were mounted in a mastication simulator and subjected to 1.2 million loading cycles under 100 N at 1.5 Hz; surviving specimens were subjected to another 1.2 million loading cycles under 200 N at 1.5 Hz. The load was applied to the cantilever extension, 12-mm from the clamp of the mastication simulator. The Kaplan-Meier survival analysis and Cox proportional hazards model were used to evaluate the data (α=.05). RESULTS Significant differences in survival rate and hazard ratio were observed among materials (P<.001). Among tested materials, SM-ZR had the highest and AM had the lowest survival rate (P≤.031). All materials had a significantly higher hazard ratio than SM-ZR (P≤.011) in the increasing order of SM-GR, SM-PM, SM-CR, and AM. CONCLUSIONS SM-ZR had the highest survival rate with no failed specimens. Even though most of the tested polymer-based materials failed during cyclic loading, these failures were commonly observed during the second 1.2 million loading cycles with 200 N. All materials had a higher hazard ratio than SM-ZR.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Total tooth loss is common in the aging population resulting in insufficient chewing function with subsequent weakening of the masticatory muscles. The study aims to evaluate the changes in thicknesses of the masseter and anterior temporal muscle in edentulous patients following the reconstruction of implant-supported fixed prostheses and compare them with the dentate individuals. MATERIALS AND METHODS The study was designed as a prospective, single-center, controlled clinical trial. A total of 60 participants were included in the present study. The patients were divided into two groups; Group I (Test Group): 30 edentulous patients who received implant-supported fixed prostheses, Group II (Control Group): 30 dentate individuals of an age and sex-matched group. Ultrasonography was used to measure the cross-sectional thickness of the left and right musculus masseter and anterior temporalis immediately after the cementation of the prosthetic rehabilitation (T1), on the 1st (T2) and 6th (T3) months after rehabilitation and at a single time point in the control group. RESULTS The results showed that there were significant comparison differences in muscle thickness at the baseline measurements between groups while at the end of the 6th month, these differences were not significant. The muscle thicknesses of both the masseter and anterior temporalis muscles increased significantly at T2 and T3 compared to T1 in the test group. The asymmetry index between the left and right muscles in the test group and the asymmetry differences between groups also decreased significantly at the end of the 6th month. CONCLUSION The implant-supported fixed prostheses significantly increase the thicknesses of the masseter and anterior temporal muscle together with a decrease in the asymmetry between the left and right muscles. At six months, implant-treated patients showed similar muscle thicknesses compared to dentate individuals. CLINICAL RELEVANCE The findings suggest that implant-supported fixed prostheses can improve the masticatory function and facial symmetry of edentulous patients.

Abstract
The goal of this extension study was to compare the 10-year outcome of 3.3 mm diameter titanium-zirconium (TiZr) or grade IV titanium (Ti) implants in mandibular implant-overdentures. MATERIALS AND METHODS This study is the 10-year follow-up from a randomised, controlled, double-blind, split-mouth multicentre clinical trial. Patients with edentulous mandibles had received two implants in the interforaminal region (bone-level, diameter 3.3 mm, microrough surface), one of TiZr (test) and one of Ti (control). Implant survival and success, plaque and sulcus bleeding indices, probing pocket depth, gingival margin, clinical attachment level and radiographic crestal bone levels were evaluated. RESULTS Fifty of 91 patients with implants were available for the 10-year examination and 36 patients were valid for the intent-to-treat (ITT) analysis. The implant success rate was calculated as 94.6% and 91.9% for the TiZr implants and the Ti implants respectively. Four implants were lost (TiZr = 1; Ti = 3) in the entire study period. Kaplan-Meier survival analyses estimated 10- year implant survival rate for TiZr to 98.9% and Ti 95.8%.The mean of total and functional crestal bone loss was 1.49 mm (±1.37 mm) and 0.82 mm (±1.09 mm) in the TiZr group and 1.56 mm (±1.34 mm) and 0.85 mm (±1.16 mm) in the Ti group. CONCLUSIONS This split-mouth design RCT on mandibular implant-overdentures evidenced, bearing in mind its follow-up time-related reduced cohort size, high 10-year implant success- and survival rates. These results confirm TiZr as well-suited implant material for realising small-diameter implants. Registered on www. CLINICALTRIALS gov: NCT01878331.

Abstract
Aim Neglected oral health is a major issue, especially in women of developing countries, leading to early loss of teeth which may further lead to malnutrition, degradation of overall health, and increased chances of osteoporosis. Thus, the aim of this study was to assess the effect of food supplement on masticatory performance, nutritional status, electromyography (EMG) (masseter and temporalis), and bone mineral density (BMD) among women rehabilitated with complete denture. Settings and Design Hospital based randomized controlled trial. Materials and Methods A randomized controlled trial with 106 women of 45-65 years rehabilitated with complete denture (56 received food supplement and 50 did not receive food supplement) and 52 healthy control was conducted. The outcomes were assessed at baseline and 3 and 6 months of follow up (after complete denture fabrication). Outcomes were measured via masticatory performance, nutritional status (hemoglobin, serum calcium, albumin, and Vitamin D level), EMG of masseter and temporalis muscles, and BMD. Statistical Analysis Used Friedman's analysis of variance test was used as a nonparametric test, and the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences version 21.0 at a significance level of 0.05 was used for statistical analysis. Results A statistically significant change was observed during follow up for the group with food supplement for BMD, EMG, and masticatory performance. When biochemical parameters were assessed during follow up, no statistically significant change was observed for both groups (with and without food supplement), except for serum calcium level in group which received food supplement. Conclusion It was found that the magnitude of effect was remarkably meager in food supplement group which could be perhaps due to less time given for follow up period. Longer duration of trials would yield better results.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This parallel cross-sectional study compared masticatory function and patient-centered outcomes among 3 removable treatment strategies for mandibular edentulism. METHODS Thirty-six edentulous participants rehabilitated using 3 removable treatment strategies for mandibular edentulism were allocated to one of the three groups (n=12): CCD (control), 2-IMO, and 3-IMO. Narrow diameter implants were installed using single-stage surgery and conventionally loaded with stud abutments. After 3 months of usage, the quality of life, maximum bite force, and masticatory function were evaluated. Data were analyzed with the Kruskal-Wallis test and post hoc pairwise Mann-Whitney tests with Bonferroni correction (α=0.05). RESULTS The 2-IMO and 3-IMO wearers did not show significant differences in any outcome, except for the 2 domains of 3-IMO wearers quality of life that obtained better Pain and General Performance scores. Both IMO groups presented significantly higher maximum bite force than CCD wearers. The 2-IMO wearers showed superior outcomes to the CCD group in all outcomes of the masticatory performance test and the X50, B and ME5.6 outcomes of the swallowing threshold test (p = 0.01), while 3-IMO participants only showed superior masticatory performance in terms of lower X50 values (19.86%, p = 0.02) and higher ME 2.8 (141.15%, p = 0.04) than CCD wearers. CONCLUSIONS Compared to 2-IMO wearers, 3-IMO wearers report superior impact of treatment on daily living activities in the Pain and General Performance domains. 2-IMO and 3-IMO wearers showed no significant differences between them for all evaluated bite force and masticatory function parameters. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE Although overdentures retained by 3 implants (3-IMO) provide biomechanical advantages over those retained by 2 implants (2-IMO), superior clinical and functional effectiveness is not yet proven.

Abstract
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM Existing data on the mid-term to long-term survival rates of zirconia implant-supported, fixed complete dentures (Zir-IFCDs) are lacking. PURPOSE The purpose of this retrospective clinical study was to assess the prosthetic survival rate in patients treated with Zir-IFCDs. MATERIAL AND METHODS The patient record system at the Dental College of Georgia (DCG), Augusta University was searched to identify all patients treated with Zir-IFCDs from 2015 through 2022 by the DCG graduate prosthodontic, general practice residency, and Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD) programs. Reasons for replacement were grouped as failure of veneering porcelain, framework fracture, implant loss, patient-driven concerns, excessive occlusal wear, and other. RESULTS A total of 67 arches were found that met the inclusion criteria, 46 maxillary and 21 mandibular. The median follow-up time was 8.5 months (interquartile range, 2.7 to 30.9 months). A total of 9 of the 67 arches were identified as having failed (4 maxillary, 5 mandibular), requiring replacement. Reasons for failure were as follows: 3 framework fractures, 2 implant losses, 2 patient-related concerns, 1 fracture of veneering porcelain, and 1 unknown. The combined survival rate (Kaplan-Meier, log-normal modeling) for Zir-IFCDs was 88.8% at 1 year and 72.5% at 5 years CONCLUSIONS: Based on the findings, the Zir-IFCDs investigated had a survival rate lower than that reported in similar studies, though higher than published results for metal-acrylic resin-IFCDs. The most common source of failure was fracture of the zirconia framework. Thickness of the zirconia framework, interocclusal space, cantilever length, occlusal force, and status of the opposing dentition may have been associated with framework failures and should be investigated further.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To compare the fracture resistance (FR) of three combinations of materials for full-arch maxillary implant-supported hybrid prostheses (HPs) with short cantilevers (≤ 10 mm). METHODS Maxillary HPs were fabricated and classified as follows (n = 5 each): Group-1 (CC-A, control): acrylic-resin-veneered Co-Cr frameworks; Group-2 (CF-A): acrylic-resin-veneered carbon-fiber mesostructures; and Group-3 (CF-R): composite-resin-veneered carbon-fiber frames. Specimens were thermal-cycled (5,000 cycles; 5 °C-55 °C; dwell time: 30 s). Vertical loads were applied until failure, first at the 10-mm-long cantilever (LC), and, afterwards, at the anterior region (AR), using a universal testing machine (crosshead speed: 0.05 mm/s). The fracture pattern was assessed by stereomicroscope and SEM. The one-way ANOVA, the Bonferroni, and the independent samples t tests, were run (α= 0.05). RESULTS At LC, CF-A, and CC-A samples exhibited the highest FR values (p< 0.001), showing no differences to each other. At AR, CC-A specimens recorded the highest FR, followed by CF-A samples (p< 0.001). CF-R HPs displayed the lowest FR at both locations (p< 0.001). The only group with differences between the tested sites was the CC-A, the AR being more resistant (p< 0.001). Most CC-A and CF-A HPs failed cohesively. CF-R prostheses mainly failed adhesively. CONCLUSIONS Maxillary HPs with short cantilevers (≤ 10 mm) made of Co-Cr or carbon-fiber veneered with acrylic resin demonstrated an adequate mechanical resistance (> 900 N). CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE For maxillary HPs with cantilevers up to 10 mm, acrylic-veneered carbon- fiber mesostructures may be recommended, whereas coating carbon-fiber frames with composite resin seems not suitable.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aims of this systematic review were to evaluate the clinical masticatory performance of implant-supported restorations, observe the occlusal force changes in the distribution of the implant restoration and reveal the positive and negative contributing factors of implant design and components based on the outcomes of digital occlusal measurement. MATERIAL AND METHODS An extensive search was conducted through PubMed and CENTRAL to identify clinical trials on implant-retained restorations using digital occlusal analysis methods. Two researchers assessed the identified studies and data extraction independently, and the data synthesis strategies without meta-analysis that summarizes the effect estimates were adopted. RESULTS The search screened 3821 titles and abstracts, then full-text analysis for 26 articles was performed, and 14 studies were included in the quantitative synthesis. Four of six studies for implant-retained overdenture showed statistically significant improved bite force when immediate loading (p = .00045, .00005, .00055, and .00005, respectively), and no statistically significant results in the other two studies (p = .225, .371, respectively.) However, the results of the favoured intervention were not statistically significant (p = .104, .166, respectively) in two studies of single posterior implant restorations. In all three studies, the bite force distributed on the implant prostheses of partially fixed implant-retained restoration increased statistically significantly (p = .013, .001, .05, respectively). CONCLUSIONS The edentulous restoration supported by implants seems to significantly improves bite force and chewing efficiency compared with conventional dentures. Regular quantitative occlusal measurement is recommended to avoid the possible risk of overload. Smaller implants size and relatively small and flexible attachment designs may be more conducive to the stability and retention of the restoration of atrophy of alveolar bone.

Abstract
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM Long-term data are sparse on the use of metal-acrylic resin implant-supported fixed complete dentures. PURPOSE The purpose of this retrospective clinical study was to assess the prosthetic survival and complication rate in patients treated with metal-acrylic resin implant-supported fixed complete dentures (ma-IFCDs). MATERIALS AND METHODS The patient record system at the Dental College of Georgia was searched from 2006 to 2020 to identify all patients treated with ma-IFCDs by the graduate prosthodontic and general practice residents during this time. Variables collected were date of delivery of the prosthesis, arch treated (maxilla, mandible), date of the last visit, status of the opposing arch (complete arch fixed implant-supported prosthesis, complete denture, removable implant-supported overdenture, teeth and removable partial denture, teeth and implants, teeth only), date of replacement, and reason for replacement. Reasons for replacement were grouped as fracture of the framework, implant loss, patient-related concerns, catastrophic acrylic resin fracture (judged to be beyond predictable repair by the clinician), and extensive occlusal wear (judged to have worn to the point of requiring replacement). RESULTS A total of 84 arches in 55 patients who met the inclusion criteria were identified from the electronic health review. Of the 84 complete arch prostheses, 43 were maxillary and 41 were mandibular. The median follow-up time was 2.8 years (interquartile range [IQR] 0.95, 4.65). A total of 31 of the 84 arches were identified as having failed, requiring replacement. The most frequent reason for replacement was catastrophic fracture of the acrylic resin (61%), followed by excessive occlusal wear (19%). It was found that 13% of the failures were associated with patient-related concerns, and 7% with the loss of an implant. Survival rates were analyzed based on the opposing arch. The combined survival rate (Kaplan-Meier, log-normal modeling) for ma-IFCDs was 54% at 5 years (95% confidence interval [CI] 42%, 66%) and 32% at 10 years (95% CI 20%, 47%). CONCLUSIONS Mid- to long-term survival rates for ma-IFCDs are concerningly low. The findings suggest that the status of the opposing arch plays a role in the survival rate of ma-IFCDs. The most common complication was catastrophic fracture of the acrylic resin superstructure, followed by wear of the acrylic resin denture teeth.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Proprioceptive information from natural dentition and adjacent oral tissues enables correct masticatory function, avoiding damage to the teeth. Periodontium is the main source of this relevant information, and when a tooth is lost, all this proprioceptive sensibility relies on receptors from muscles, the mucous membrane or the temporomandibular joint, and this sensibility gets worse. Active tactile sensibility measures this proprioceptive capability in microns by psychophysical studies consisting of introducing thin metal foils between patients' dental arches during chewing to see if they are able to notice them or not. Osseoperception is a complex phenomenon that seems to improve this sensibility in patients wearing dental implants. The objective of this investigation is to measure this sensibility in different prosthetic situations by performing a psychophysical investigation. MATERIAL AND METHODS We divided 67 patients in three groups depending on their prosthetic situation and performed a psychophysical study by introducing aluminium foils of different thicknesses in order to establish an active tactile sensibility threshold in every group. We also measured variables such as prosthetic wearing time, age or gender to see how they may influence threshold values. We used Student's t-test and Mann-Whitney U tests to analyse these results. RESULTS Active tactile sensibility threshold values in implants are lower than those from complete dentures but higher than values in natural dentition. However, values in implants are closer to natural dentition than complete denture values. Age, gender or prosthetic wearing time have no influence in active tactile sensibility thresholds. CONCLUSION Active tactile sensibility threshold values depend on prosthetic rehabilitations and the mechanoreceptors involved in every situation. Implant prosthesis presents an increased active tactile sensibility thanks to osseoperception phenomenon.

Abstract
Objective: Investigating the biomechanical effects of mandibular flexure (MF) on the design of implant-supported fixed restorations in edentulous jaws of different facial types. Methods: Three-dimensional finite element models were established to analyze mandibular displacement and stress distribution of implant-supported fixed restorations (four or six implants, different implant numbers and sites, and the design of the superstructure across the dental arch in one or two or three pieces, under the loading conditions of maximum opening or right unilateral molar occlusion) in mandibular edentulous patients of three different facial types (brachyfacial, mesofacial, and dolichofacial types). Results: The brachyfacial type presented higher mandibular flexure and stress in the overall restorative system, followed by the mesofacial and dolichofacial types. During jaw opening and occlusal movements, the one-piece framework showed the lowest bone stress values surrounding the anterior implants and gradually increased to the distal position, and the three-piece framework showed the highest stress values for peri-implant bones. Also, the split framework could greatly increase the stress on abutments and frameworks. Moreover, fixed implant prostheses with cantilevers can generate high amounts of biomechanical stress and strain on implants and surrounding bones. The bone surrounding the anterior implant increased in stress values as the most distal implants were more distally located regardless of frameworks. The zirconia framework demonstrated higher stresses than the titanium framework. Conclusion: The design of edentulous fixed implant-supported restorations can be optimized for facial types. For patients of the brachyfacial type or with high masticatory muscle strength, the non-segmented framework without a cantilever provides an optimal biomechanical environment.

Abstract
PURPOSE This crossover study aimed to evaluate chewing efficiency and maximum bite force (BF) of conventional dentures, fixed prostheses, and milled bar overdentures (MO) used for All-on-4 implant rehabilitation of atrophied mandibular ridges. METHODS Sixteen edentulous participants with resorbed mandibular ridges received new conventional dentures (CD, control). Four implants were inserted after 3 months in the mandible using the All-on-4 protocol and loaded immediately with acrylic prosthesis. In a crossover manner, each patient had either fixed restoration (FR, 12 occlusal units) or MO (14 occlusal units) randomly in a crossover study design. Chewing efficiency was evaluated using the mixing ability test. The hue deviation (HD) of two-colored gum was calculated after being chewed for 5, 10, 20, 30, and 50 masticatory cycles. Maximum BF was evaluated using a BF device. HD and BF were measured after using CD, FR, and MO prostheses. RESULTS For all groups, the highest HD (i.e., the lowest chewing efficiency) was noted with 5 strokes, followed by 10, 20, 30 strokes, and the lowest HD (i.e., the highest chewing efficiency) was noted with 50 strokes. For all number of chewing strokes, CD showed the highest HD, then FR, and MO recorded the lowest HD. The highest BF was observed with MO, then FR, and the lowest BF was noted with CD. CONCLUSION Within the limitations of this short-term investigation, both FR and MO used for All-on-4 implant rehabilitation of patients with resorbed mandibular ridges improve masticatory efficiency and maximum BFs compared to CD. However, MO was associated with significantly higher chewing efficiency and maximum BFs than fixed prosthesis.

Abstract
PURPOSE Masticatory loading triggers active bone remodeling, altering alveolar bone mineral density (BMD). While dental implants are placed to bear masticatory loading, their influence on changing bone properties has not been fully investigated. Objective of this pilot study was to examine whether the dental implantation has an effect on BMD distribution of bone by comparing dentate, edentulous, and edentulous patients with implants. MATERIALS AND METHODS Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) images of 19 partially edentulous patients (Dent), 19 edentulous patients (Edent), and 16 edentulous patients who received implants in the mandible (Edent+Im), were obtained. CBCT images were also obtained from 5 patients within Edent+Im group, before implant placement and after implant loading. Basal cortical bone region of the mandible was digitally isolated. A histogram of gray levels proportional to BMD was obtained to assess mean, histogram standard deviation (HSD), fifth percentile of low and high values (Low5 and High5) of the BMD distribution. Multivariate analysis of variance and paired t-test were used to compare the BMD parameters among the 3 dental status groups and between pre- and post-implantation, respectively. RESULTS Edentulous patients with implants had significantly greater HSD and High5 values compared to edentulous patients (P < .013). All other comparisons were not significant (P > .097). Mean, HSD, and High5 values significantly increased after receiving implants (P < .022). CONCLUSION The current findings suggested that receiving dental implants promoted oral bone mineralization for edentulous patients. The longitudinal investigation could provide valuable information on understanding the effects of implantation on the behavior of oral bone quality.

Abstract
Introduction Malnutrition and risk of malnutrition continues to be a common finding in elders, yet its association with oral function in hospitalised patients remains unclear. Material and methods Patients aged 70 years or over who had been hospitalised for non‐acute rehabilitation were recruited. Nutritional risk was screened using the Mini‐Nutritional Assessment Short Form (MNA‐SF) and Nutritional Risk Screening (NRS) scores. Malnutrition was assessed according to the Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition (GLIM) criteria. All participants underwent the oral hypofunction test battery, evaluating oral hygiene, oral dryness, occlusal force, tongue‐lip motor function, tongue pressure, masticatory and swallowing function. Statistical analyses comprised Mann‐Whitney or Kruskal‐Wallis tests. Bivariate associations between categorical variables were tested using the Pearson chi‐square test; for continuous variables, the Spearman correlation was calculated. A P‐value < .05 was considered statistically significant. Results Sixty patients aged a mean 82.5 ± 7.0 years participated. Some 88.3% were diagnosed with oral hypofunction, and this was more common in older patients (P = .020). Analysing the 7 oral hypofunction tests as an interval variable (NiOF) revealed additional correlations with number of teeth (ρ = 0.477) as well as the nutritional risk, evaluated by the MNA‐SF (ρ = −0.284) and NRS (ρ = 0.317) scores. NiOF scores were higher among denture wearers (P = .003). GLIM did not confirm the correlation with NiOF. Biomarkers such as serum albumin and CRP were not associated with the NiOF score. Conclusion In this sample, the association between oral function and nutritional state is more obvious in nutritional risk scores than in the malnutrition diagnosis by GLIM.

Abstract
PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to determine a reference value for masticatory performance (MP) by measuring the amount of glucose extracted(AGE) from chewing gummy jelly. METHODS A total of 237 young adults (young group, 20-39 years), 147 middle-aged adults (middle-aged group, 40-59 years), and 177 older adults (old group, 60-87 years) participated in this study. All participants had natural dentition, excluding the third molars. AGE was measured when the participant chewed gummy jelly and used as a parameter of MP. AGE was compared among the three groups. Next, AGE in each group was compared between the habitual chewing side and non-habitual chewing side, and between males and females. The correlation between age and AGE was also investigated. RESULTS AGE in the young, middle, and old groups were similar, and no significant differences were observed. AGE was significantly higher in the habitual chewing side compared to the non-habitual chewing side, and in males than that in females. No significant correlations were found between age and AGE. AGE in the habitual chewing side of all ages was 221.9 ± 34.4 mg/dL for males and 206.0 ± 28.7 mg/dL for females. The mean-2SD (standard deviation) value representing the reference value of healthy adults was 153.1 mg/dL for males and 148.6 mg/dL for females, which was close to 150 mg/dL. CONCLUSION It was concluded that the reference value of masticatory performance as measured by the amount of glucose extraction after chewing gummy jelly was 150 mg/dL.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To assess the sociomedical and oral factors affecting masticatory performance in a community-dwelling older population. MATERIALS AND METHODS Community-dwelling persons over 60 years were investigated using medical and dental oral interviews, oral and denture examination (natural teeth, tooth mobility, number of occluding tooth pairs, and removable dentures' prevalence and quality), and evaluation of masticatory performance using a mixing ability test. RESULTS A total of 130 participants with a mean age of 73.9±8.5 years were recorded. Fifty-eight (44.6%) used various types of removable prostheses. Twenty were edentulous and used a pair of complete dentures. Univariate analyses revealed statistically significant associations (p≤0.05) between masticatory performance and aging, marital status, subjective chewing ability, use of removable dentures, use of various combinations of complete dentures, pain caused by maxillary denture, number of teeth, tooth mobility, posterior chewing pairs, all chewing contacts natural or prosthetic, retention of mandibular partial dentures, and dentures' occlusion. The multivariable quantile regression analysis revealed that fewer natural teeth (95% CI: -0.02-0.01, p<0.001), being edentulous and using a pair of complete dentures (95% CI: 0.09-0.35, p=0.001), and larger percentage of severely mobile teeth (95% CI: 0.07-0.82, p=0.020) were associated with lower masticatory performance. CONCLUSIONS Poor masticatory performance in older adults was associated with fewer teeth, being edentulous and using a pair of complete dentures, and increased prevalence of severe tooth mobility. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Retaining the natural dentition and preventing and treating periodontal disease are important measures to maintain masticatory performance in older adults.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Muscle-related temporomandibular disorders (TMD) may affect the masticatory function. Chewing function can be assessed objectively using bolus-kneading tests, such as two-colour chewing-gum mixing ability test. OBJECTIVE The aim was to compare the masticatory function with a two-colour chewing-gum test before and after treatment of the masticatory muscle-related temporomandibular disorder. METHODS Twenty-one patients with masticatory muscle disorder according to Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders (DC/TMD) were recruited as an experimental group, and further twenty-one participants without any TMD were included as controls. Pain intensity (scored on a visual-analogue scale) and maximum mouth opening (MMO) were recorded. Jaw Functional Limitation Scale-8 (JFLS-8) was conducted on all patients. Before and after treatment, masticatory function was evaluated with a validated bolus-kneading test, using two-colour chewing gum. RESULTS There was no statistically significant difference in chewing function before and after treatment in the experimental group (p = .715). When these values were compared with the control group, there were no statistically significant differences (p = .489, p = .890). There was no correlation between masticatory function and VAS, MMO, JFLS-8 before and after treatment in the experimental group. CONCLUSION The two-colour chewing-gum test is not sensitive when the masticatory performance is not severely impaired.

Abstract
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM A clinical assessment of the masticatory performance of edentulous people treated with bimaxillary implant-supported fixed prostheses is lacking. PURPOSE The purpose of this case-control study was to compare the masticatory performance of edentulous people treated with bimaxillary implant-supported fixed prostheses to that of those with a natural dentition by using a simplified comminution test with hard viscoelastic test food and a mixing ability test. MATERIAL AND METHODS Thirty-six participants were recruited and divided into 2 equal groups (n=18) based on their dental status. The experimental group (7 women, mean ±standard deviation age=69.8 ±7.5 years) had bimaxillary implant-supported fixed prostheses, and the control group (9 women, mean ±standard deviation age=68.3 ±5.6 years) had a natural dentition. A hard viscoelastic food comminution test and a mixing ability test with 2-colored chewing gum were performed in both groups. The number and total area of the particles during the comminution test and the variance of hue during the mixing ability test were measured. The data were analyzed with the parametric (paired t test) and nonparametric (Mann-Whitney U) tests to assess differences between the groups (α=.05). RESULTS The experimental group exhibited significantly fewer pieces in the food comminution test than the control group (P=.001). The experimental group also showed significantly higher variance of hue values than the control group (P<.001). CONCLUSIONS Patients treated with bimaxillary implant-supported prostheses had reduced masticatory performance in comparison to those with a natural dentition, despite having been provided with satisfactory and well-functioning prostheses.

Abstract
This study aims to assess the treatment outcomes (functional and subjective) of full-arch fixed hybrid rehabilitations made of PEEK (poly-ether-ether-ketone) with milled crowns of nano-filled composite (NFC) supported on four to six implants. In this randomized clinical trial, 34 edentate patients in the upper and/or the lower jaws were treated with the fixed hybrid dentures. In 16 patients (47.1% of the sample), the implants were loaded immediately (IL) by means of a provisional fixed rehabilitation made of PMMA (polymethylmethacrylate) screwed on Multi-Unit (MU) abutments connected after emplacement of the implant; however, in the counterparts (n = 18) these MU abutments were covered by healing caps and were left unloaded during two months (conventional loading protocol—CL), when all patients received a fixed hybrid PEEK-NFC rehabilitation on the upper and/or the lower jaw. Treatment outcomes were assessed 12 months after prostheses delivery. Functional outcomes were calculated according to masticatory performance, estimated by mixing ability tests of two colored chewing gums after ten chewing strokes, by the occlusal force/area recorded by pressure-sensitive sheets, and by electromyography of masseters and temporal muscles at maximum biteforce. The subjective outcomes of the treatment were assessed using both the oral satisfaction scale (visual analog scale) and the Spanish version of the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-20). The findings of the present study showed that treatment with fixed PEEK-NFC hybrid prostheses significantly improved the masticatory performance, bite force, occlusal pattern, quality of life, and satisfaction, with the IL group being those with significantly higher occlusal bite forces and greater satisfaction in comparison with CL group. It should be concluded that PEEK-NFC hybrid prostheses can improve several patient-centered outcomes and that loading protocol significantly affects the patient’s self-rated satisfaction.

Abstract
The long-term success of dental implants is greatly influenced by the use of appropriate materials while applying the “All-on-4” concept in the edentulous jaw. This study aims to evaluate the stress distribution in the “All-on-4” prosthesis across different material combinations using three-dimensional finite element analysis (FEA) and to evaluate which opposing arch material has destructive effects on which prosthetic material while offering certain recommendations to clinicians accordingly. Acrylic and ceramic-based hybrid prosthesis have been modelled on a rehabilitated maxilla using the “All-on-4” protocol. Using different materials and different supports in the opposing arch (natural tooth, and implant/ceramic, and acrylic), a multi-vectorial load has been applied. To measure stresses in bone, maximum and minimum principal stress values were calculated, while Von Mises stress values were obtained for prosthetic materials. Within a single group, the use of an acrylic implant-supported prosthesis as an antagonist to a full arch implant-supported prosthesis yielded lower maximum (Pmax) and minimum (Pmin) principal stresses in cortical bone. Between different groups, maxillary prosthesis with polyetheretherketone as framework material showed the lowest stress values among other maxillary prostheses. The use of rigid materials with higher moduli of elasticity may transfer higher stresses to the peri implant bone. Thus, the use of more flexible materials such as acrylic and polyetheretherketone could result in lower stresses, especially upon atrophic bones.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to clarify the presence or absence of gender differences in masticatory function in elderly adults with completely natural dentition. Fifty-six elderly adults aged 65 years and older (elderly group) and 60 young adults in their 20-40 s (young group) with natural dentition participated in this study. The maximum occlusal force on the habitual chewing side was measured using dental prescale. Next, the amount of glucose extraction when subjects chewed a gummy jelly on their habitual chewing side for 20 s was measured. The maximum occlusal force and masticatory performance in the elderly and young groups were compared between males and females. The relationship between the maximum occlusal force and masticatory performance was also investigated. The maximum occlusal force in the elderly and young groups was larger in males than in females, and the difference was significant. The amount of glucose extraction in the elderly and young groups was higher in males than in females, and the difference was significant. Regarding the relationship between the maximum occlusal force and the amount of glucose extraction, there was a significant positive correlation. These results suggest that there are gender differences in the masticatory function of the elderly adults with completely natural dentition, and these differences need to be noted in the evaluation of masticatory function.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION To prevent single-implant overdenture (SIO) fracture, the inclusion of a framework in the overdenture has been suggested. However, no investigations verified their benefits. OBJECTIVE To evaluate prosthetic maintenance events, patient satisfaction, and mastication of SIO reinforced by metallic framework users. MATERIAL AND METHODS Fifteen volunteers had a new set of complete dentures converted into an SIO containing a framework. Maintenance events were recorded, while patient satisfaction was assessed using a visual analog scale. Masticatory performance (MP) was evaluated using the sieving method, maximum bite force (MBF) by pressure sensors, and masseter thickness by ultrasound. Measurements were performed 2, 12, and 24 months after SIO use. Repeated-measures ANOVA and paired Student's t-tests (p < 0.05) were applied. RESULTS Matrix exchange was the most prevalent maintenance event (83.6%), and no SIO was fractured during the entire follow-up. Satisfaction with the SIO stability decreased (p < 0.01) after 12 months. MP did not change between evaluations (p > 0.05). Conversely, MBF and masseter thickness improved after 12 and 24 months of SIO use (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Reinforced SIO did not fracture during 2 years but requires maintenance. It improves bite force and muscle thickness, maintaining MP values. Satisfaction with SIO stability decreased in the first year of use.

Abstract
While appropriate nutrient intake is important for older adults, various oral problems cause decreased masticatory function. This cross-sectional study aimed to identify the factors associated with decreased masticatory performance in older adults. Oral examinations were performed on 80 participants (mean age: 75.10 ± 5.64 years) to determine the number of functional tooth units (FTUs). Symptoms of periodontal and temporomandibular diseases were evaluated via a questionnaire. The tone, elasticity, and dynamic stiffness of the masseter muscle were measured using the Myoton® PRO device. The mixing ability test was used to assess the masticatory performance, and the mixing ability index (MAI) was calculated. The analysis of covariance test was performed to adjust for confounding factors, and multiple logistic regression analysis was performed to identify the risk factors affecting MAI. A lower MAI was significantly associated with higher tone (p = 0.006) and lower elasticity (p = 0.013). The number of FTUs (adjusted odds ratio (OR) = 0.724, p = 0.029), tone (adjusted OR = 1.215, p = 0.016), and elasticity (adjusted OR = 4.789, p = 0.038) were independently associated with the MAI. Muscle function training and prosthetic treatments may help increase masticatory performance in older adults, which would improve overall health.

Abstract
PURPOSE The purpose of this Best Evidence Consensus Statement was to search the literature to determine if there is a relationship between patient specific factors and occlusal force. MATERIALS AND METHODS A literature review was conducted in the following databases: Evidence-Based Medicine Reviews (EBMR), Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, Embase, and Ovid MEDLINE(R) and Epub Ahead of Print. Articles on patient factors and occlusal force were compiled by using a combination of the key words: "bite force," "occlusal force," "partial and complete edentulism," "bruxism," and "orthognathic class." Inclusion criteria included meta-analyses, systematic reviews, randomized controlled trials, case series, and journal articles. Exclusion criteria were case reports, studies in children, animals, and bench studies. RESULTS Of the 1502 articles that met the initial search criteria, 97 related to patient-specific factors affecting occlusal forces. These articles were evaluated, rated, and organized into appropriate categories addressing questions of foci. CONCLUSIONS The range of occlusal force is highly variable among subjects correlated to patient specific factors such as age, gender, partial and complete edentulism, the presence of a maxillofacial defect, location of edentulous area, orthognathic profile, and magnitude of occlusal vertical dimension. Tooth replacement therapies targeted at increasing occlusal contact seem to have a positive effect on increasing occlusal force. Bruxism does not necessarily demonstrate higher occlusal powering but may have greater tooth contact time. Occlusal force is not clearly affected by the type of dental restoration or restorative material used. The clinical significance of the changes in occlusal forces is yet to be determined.

Abstract
A large number of methodological procedures and experimental conditions are reported to describe the masticatory process. However, similar terms are sometimes employed to describe different methodologies. Standardisation of terms is essential to allow comparisons among different studies. This article was aimed to provide a consensus concerning the terms, definitions and technical methods generally reported when evaluating masticatory function objectively and subjectively. The consensus is based on the results from discussions and consultations among world‐leading researchers in the related research areas. Advantages, limitations and relevance of each method are also discussed. The present consensus provides a revised framework of standardised terms to improve the consistent use of masticatory terminology and facilitate further investigations on masticatory function analysis. In addition, this article also outlines various methods used to evaluate the masticatory process and their advantages and disadvantages in order to help researchers to design their experiments.

Abstract
Locator® and ball attachments are well-established systems to attach overdentures to two inter-foraminal implants. This study aimed to evaluate differences between the two systems regarding prosthetic maintenance and patients’ oral-health-related quality of life (OHRQoL). Dental records of patients with a mandibular implant-retained overdenture were retrospectively analyzed. Prosthetic maintenance measures involving the denture suprastructure and attachment matrix and patrix were analyzed. Furthermore, the Oral Health Impact Profile-G14 (OHIP-G14) was used to evaluate OHRQoL. Results were analyzed by means of Kaplan–Meier analysis and Student’s t- and log-rank tests. The records of 122 patients were evaluated. Kaplan–Meier survival analysis revealed a significant difference between ball attachments (Group B; n patients = 47) and Locator® attachments (Group L; n patients = 75) regarding the occurrence of denture fractures (p < 0.001) and events affecting the matrix (p = 0.028) and patrix (p = 0.030). Group L had a significantly lower total OHIP-G14 score than Group B (p = 0.002). The most common maintenance events were matrix-related and denture relining for both attachment systems. Group B required more maintenance measures than Group L. Moreover, patients in Group L had better OHRQoL than patients in Group B.

Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS Debate still exists about the impact of dental implant-supported prostheses on nutritional status of partially and complete edentulous patients. This review aims to answer the focused question: "Do complete and partial edentulous patients, using implant-supported prostheses, present better nutritional and masticatory functions when compared to those using conventional rehabilitations?". A possible cause-effect relationship between masticatory improvements and nutritional gain was also evaluated. METHODS Literature search included 6 databases (PubMed/Medline, Embase, LILACS, Scopus, Web of Science, and The Cochrane Library - CENTRAL), grey literature (Google Scholar, Proquest Dissertations and Thesis and Open Grey databases) and manual search (last update June 2020), without language, publication time and follow-up restrictions. We included only studies evaluating both masticatory and nutritional outcomes. The PICO question comprised complete and partial edentulous patients (Population), submitted to implant-supported prostheses (Intervention), in comparison to conventional dental prosthetic rehabilitation, evaluating masticatory function and nutrition parameters (outcomes). Risk of bias was assessed by using Cochrane Collaboration's tool (randomized clinical trials), Joanna Briggs Institute critical appraisal checklist (paired clinical trials), and Meta-Analysis of Statistics Assessment and Review Instrument" (JBI - MAStARI) critical appraisal tools (cohort studies). All meta-analyses were conducted at 5% level of significance. This report followed the PRISMA guidelines. (Review registration PROSPERO - CRD42019135744). RESULTS We identified 1199 articles while searching databases. Fourteen articles met eligibility criteria, including 817 prostheses installed in 660 patients (mean age = 66.8 years-old). Patients wearing implant overdentures (IOD) presented better masticatory function in comparison to conventional complete denture (CD) wearers (p < 0.05). However, bioavailability of several nutrients remained within the same range, except for serum folate that was lower in IOD patients after 6 (mean difference 3.51 nmol/L; p = 0.01) and 12 months of rehabilitation (mean difference 3.69 nmol/L; p = 0.003). When comparing the effects of CD and IOD rehabilitations along time (for the same patient), serum albumin and vitamin B12 levels also decreased for both groups after 12 months-follow-up, but still within the reference range. The additional retention of the implants did not interfere in body weight, but reduced the risk of malnutrition (using the Mini Nutritional Assessment). Implant-supported partial prostheses also improved mastication in comparison to the conventional ones, increasing short-term daily intake of carbohydrates, protein, calcium, fiber, and iron, whereas decreasing the consumption of cholesterol. However, no long-term changes on bioavailability of most nutrients were observed, expect for a slight increase in ferritin and cholinesterase, and a small reduction in folate and Vitamin A. CONCLUSION Current evidence indicates significant masticatory improvements for dental fixed implant-supported prostheses in comparison to conventional removable prostheses. However, bioavailability remained stable for most of the nutrients, especially for complete edentulous patients. These results indicate the importance of a multidisciplinary approach during oral rehabilitation (nutrient specialist), in order to enhance food choices and promote health benefits to the patients.

Abstract
(1) Background: This study aimed to investigate maximum bite force (MBF) in elderly patients with natural full dentition (FD), patients rehabilitated with Traditional Complete Dentures (CD), with overdentures (IRO) and edentulous patients (ED). We also tested whether MBF changes are associated with gender, age of the patients and body mass index (BMI) as result of altered food; (2) Methods: Three hundred and sixty-eight geriatric patients were included. We studied two types of prostheses: (a) IRO with telescopic attachments. (b) CD (heat polymerized polymethyl methacrylate resin). The MBF was measured using a digital dynamometer with a bite fork; (3) Results: We found that MBF is higher in males than females, regardless of teeth presence or absence (p < 0.01). In patients with CD or IRO, there are no differences between males and females; prostheses improve MBF compared to edentulous patients (p < 0.0001) and this effect is greater with IRO prostheses (p < 0.0001); the chewing force of FD subjects remains greater (p < 0.0001); there are no differences among chewing strength based on different BMI categories, although FD subjects have a reduced incidence of obesity; there is a significant negative correlation between MBF and age (p = 0.038; R = 0.145), and no correlation between MBF and BMI; (4) Conclusions: This study showed that MBF improves more in patients using IRO prostheses, although not reaching the MBF of FD subjects. MBF does not correlate with BMI, although we found increased percentages of obesity in edentulous subjects or those with prostheses. Thus, old people wearing prostheses require special attention by a nutritionist to avoid risk of malnutrition.

Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS Oral phase dysphagia is dependent on ability to chew. As people age, general muscle atrophy contributes to decreased masseter strength. The main objective of this study was to assess the relationship between the thickness of the masseter muscle measured by ultrasonography and the presence of dysphagia in a group of institutionalized elderly people. As a secondary objective, we aimed to establish cutoff points of masseters muscle thickness (MMT) to identify elderly individuals at risk of oral dysphagia. METHODS Cross-sectional study of all residents from 3 nursing homes. All individuals underwent ultrasonographic measurements of left and right MMT and were classified according to the presence of dysphagia assessed by both the EAT-10 screening questionnaire and the volume-viscosity swallow test (V-VST). RESULTS 469 patients (69% women, mean age 84.7 yrs) were recruited. Dysphagia was present in 41.6% and 26% of individuals according the EAT-10 and V-VST, respectively. Multivariate logistic regression showed that 1 mm increase in MMT reduced the risk of dysphagia by 21% according to the EAT-10 tool and by 30% using the V-VST after adjusting for age, sex, mini-nutritional assessment score, and body mass index. We used receiver operative characteristic (ROC) curves to identify cutoff points of MMT to detect dysphagic individuals according to either EAT-10 or V-VST. CONCLUSIONS The MMT measured by ultrasonography is reduced in elderly individuals with dysphagia. Based on MMT, clinicians may be better informed about the patients'´ ability to masticate solid foods and identify potential nutrient deficiencies in geriatric settings.

Abstract
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM A consensus based on patients' perceptions as to whether to use overdentures or fixed prostheses to rehabilitate mandibular edentulous arches is limited. PURPOSE The purpose of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to compare the patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) and clinical outcomes associated with implant-supported overdentures and fixed prostheses in edentulous mandibles. MATERIAL AND METHODS Nine electronic databases were searched for randomized clinical trials (RCTs) and nonrandomized clinical trials (N-RCTs). The risk of bias was assessed by the revised Cochrane risk of bias tool for RCTs (RoB 2) and N-RCT (ROBINS-I). Data sets for oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL), satisfaction, survival rate, implant probing depth, and marginal bone loss were plotted, and the appropriate analyses were applied by using the Rev Man 5.3 software program. Certainty of evidence was also evaluated by means of the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE) approach. RESULTS Ten eligible trials were included and evaluated quantitatively. For 3 domains of OHRQoL, fixed prostheses showed significantly higher quality of life when compared with overdentures regarding functional limitation (P<.001), physical disability (P=.001), and physical pain (P=.003). Fixed prostheses also improved satisfaction, when compared with overdentures for comfort (P=.02), ease of chewing (P<.001), retention (P<.001), and stability (P<.001). The same pattern was observed for overall OHRQoL (P=.01) and satisfaction (P=.01) in which fixed prostheses improved patient satisfaction. Only ease of cleaning presented greater satisfaction for the overdenture group. Clinical parameters did not differ statistically (P>.05) between both types of prosthesis. CONCLUSIONS Fixed rehabilitations for mandibular edentulous patients seem to be a well-accepted treatment from the patients' oral health perspective. However, mandibular overdentures are no less efficient than fixed prostheses in terms of clinical outcomes.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This randomized controlled trial (RCT) aimed to demonstrate the non-inferiority of mandibular 2-implant overdentures (IODs) on a CAD-CAM milled bar with long distal extensions (MBDE) against IODs on retentive anchors (RA). METHODS Forty edentulous participants rehabilitated with a maxillary conventional denture and a mandibular 2-IOD participated in this trial. They were randomized into two groups [Control group (CG): RA + gold matrices; Experimental group (EG): MBDE + gold clip]. The outcomes included implant survival rate (ISR), chewing efficiency [quantitative (VoH) and subjective (SA) assessments], peri-implant marginal bone levels (PI-MBL), maximum bite force (MBF), and patient-reported outcomes [oral health impact profile (OHIP-EDENT), and denture satisfaction index (DSI)]. Outcomes were recorded at baseline (BL), two weeks (T0 ), 6 months (T1 ), and at 1 year (T2 ) after the intervention. Intra- and inter-group analyses were performed using regression models with ⍺=0.05. RESULTS 38 participants completed the T2 visit (CG: n = 19, age = 74.7 ± 7.8 years; EG: n = 19, age = 70.3 ± 10.7 years). At T2 , there was no implant loss in either of the groups (ISR = 100%). There were no significant differences between the groups for the PI-MBL changes (p = .754). Improvements occurred faster in the EG than in the CG, but over the observation time, there were no differences between the trial groups for VoH, MBF, OHIP-EDENT, and the DSI, except for SA being significantly better in the EG group (p = .022). CONCLUSIONS The results of this RCT confirm that mandibular 2-IODs with a CAD-CAM milled bar with long distal extensions are not an inferior treatment to the conventional IODs on retentive anchors in the short term (1 year).

Abstract
Objective To assess whether the impact of implantoplasty (IP) on the maximum implant failure strength depends on implant type/design, diameter, or material. Methods Fourteen implants each of different type/design [bone (BL) and tissue level (TL)], diameter [narrow (3.3 mm) and regular (4.1 mm)], and material [titanium grade IV (Ti) and titanium-zirconium alloy (TiZr)] of one company were used. Half of the implants were subjected to IP in a computerized torn. All implants were subjected to dynamic loading prior to loading until failure to simulate regular mastication. Multiple linear regression analyses were performed with maximum implant failure strength as dependent variable and IP, implant type/design, diameter, and material as predictors. Results Implants subjected to IP and TL implants showed statistically significant reduced implant failure strength irrespective of the diameter compared with implants without IP and BL implants, respectively. Implant material had a significant impact for TL implants and for regular diameter implants, with TiZr being stronger than Ti. During dynamic loading, 1 narrow Ti TL implant without IP, 4 narrow Ti TL implants subjected to IP, and 1 narrow TiZr TL implant subjected to IP were fractured. Conclusion IP significantly reduced the maximum implant failure strength, irrespective implant type/design, diameter, or material, but the maximum implant failure strength of regular diameter implants and of narrow BL implants remained high. Clinical Relevance IP seems to have no clinically relevant impact on the majority of cases, except from those of single narrow Ti TL implants, which may have an increased risk for mechanical complications. This should be considered for peri-implantitis treatment planning (e.g., communication of potential complications to the patient), but also in the planning of implant installation (e.g., choosing TiZr instead of Ti for narrow implants).

Abstract
This cross-sectional observational study with 24 patients evaluated differences in bite force (BF) and masticatory performance (MP) between conventional complete denture (CCD) and implant mandibular overdenture (IMO) users and the correlation between these variables. The BF test was performed bilaterally with an occlusal force device. During the MP test, patients were asked to chew Optocal particles for 40 cycles. The Shapiro Wilk test was employed to verify the normality of the data, the student t test to identify differences between groups, and Pearson's correlation to investigate interrelationships between variables. A multiple linear regression was subsequently performed via the stepwise method. P values ≤0.05 were considered statistically significant. Unlike IMO users, CCD users presented a significant difference (25.6%) in BF between the dominant and non-dominant chewing side (p=0.04). IMO users presented significantly higher BF (p=0.01) without presenting a dominant side (p=0.38), and also performed significantly better for the following MP parameters: MPX50 values decreased by 27.25% in IMO users (p=0.01), MPB decreased by 48.38% (p=0.01), and ME 5.6 decreased by 53.25% (p=0.02), while ME2.8 increased by 151.57% (p=0.01). The BF and MPX50 in the IMO wearers group were negatively correlated (-0.57; p=0.05); this correlation coefficient was the only parameter included in the multivariate regression model. IMO users have higher BF and better masticatory performance than CCD users, especially in terms of chewed particles size reduction. MP is correlated with a higher BF in IMO users through better particle trituration.

Abstract
Background and Objectives: Masticatory limitations on the dietary habits of edentulous subjects restrict their access to adequate nutrition, exposing them to a greater risk of protein energy malnutrition. The aim of this study is to verify the existence of an association between Masticatory Performance (MP) and nutritional changes in the elderly. Materials and Methods: 76 participants were enrolled. MP testing was performed using the two-color chewing gum mixing test. The system used reveals the extent to which the two differently colored chewing gums mix, and allows discrimination between different MPs. The assessment of the participants' nutritional statuses was carried out through a food interview. Anthropometric parameters were collected, and bioimpedance analysis was performed. Results: Mean MP was 0.448 ± 0.188. No statistically significant differences were detected between male and female subjects (p > 0.05). According to the Body Mass Index (BMI), obese patients had a lower MP than overweight and normal weight subjects (0.408 ± 0.225, 0.453 ± 0.169 and 0.486 ± 0.181, respectively). MP values were lower both in male and female subjects with a waist circumference above the threshold than those below it (0.455 ± 0.205 vs. 0.476 ± 0.110, respectively, in males and 0.447 ± 0.171 vs. 0.501 ± 0.138, respectively, in females). No relationship was noticed between MP and bioimpedance parameters (p > 0.05). Conclusions: A statistically significant relation was observed between MP and the number of missing teeth. A reduced MP could worsen nutritional parameters. A reduced MP did not seem to negatively affect bioimpedance parameters.

Abstract
The occlusal forces and their influence on the initiation of peri-implant bone loss or their relationship with peri-implantitis have created discussion during the past 30 years given the discrepancies observed in clinical, animal, and finite element analysis studies. Beyond these contradictions, in the case of an osseointegrated implant, the occlusal forces can influence the implant-bone interface and the cells responsible for the bone remodeling in different ways that may result in the maintenance or loss of the osseointegration. This comprehensive review focuses on the information available about the forces transmitted through the implant-crown system to the implant-bone interface and the mechano-transduction phenomena responsible for the bone cells' behavior and their interactions. Knowledge of the basic molecular biology of the peri-implant bone would help clinicians to understand the complex phenomenon of occlusal forces and their effects on the implant-bone interface, and would allow better control of the negative effects of mechanical stresses, leading to therapy with fewer risks and complications.

Abstract
Oral rehabilitation with prosthodontic treatment considerably influences the well-being and quality of life of patients after ablative oral tumor surgery. This study evaluated the effects of implant-supported prostheses (ISPs) on oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) and chewing ability in 10 patients who requested ISPs after mandibular oral tumor resection. OHRQoL was assessed using the Japanese version of the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-49) before and one year after ISP placement. Chewing ability, including self-assessed masticatory ability and occlusal force, was examined at one year after ISP placement. The initial mean total OHIP-49 score of 65.3 ± 9.79 decreased to 46.0 ± 8.14 at one year after ISP placement. Mean OHIP-49 score decreased in all domains, whereas self-assessed masticatory ability increased within one year of ISP placement. There were no significant differences between prosthesis types with respect to the mean OHIP-49 score or self-assessed masticatory ability. In conclusion, ISP placement improves OHRQoL and the self-assessed masticatory ability. Moreover, the prosthesis type might not significantly affect OHRQoL.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The purpose of this study was to determine the improvement in masticatory performance and satisfaction with chewing ability in partially edentulous patients after treatment with an implant-supported fixed partial prosthesis (ISFPP). MATERIAL AND METHODS This prospective study included 30 patients (mean age 59 years; 17 women) with unilateral posterior missing teeth treated with one-, two- or three-unit ISFPPs and 10 healthy individuals (mean age 36 years; 8 women) with complete natural dentition to establish the normal levels of mastication. Three variables were determined at baseline and at 3-months' follow-up in all participants: masticatory performance according to the median particle size (MPS) during freestyle mastication and unilateral mastication on each side, and satisfaction with chewing ability using a visual analog scale. Paired samples t test and Kruskal-Wallis test were used for intra-group and inter-group comparisons. RESULTS The MPS following freestyle mastication decreased significantly at 3 months in both groups. Significant reductions of 21%, 30%, and 42% in the MPS were obtained from unilateral mastication on the treated side after treatment with 1, 2, or 3 restorative units, respectively. Three months after ISFPP, satisfaction with chewing ability improved by 40% in the treatment group. CONCLUSIONS Freestyle masticatory performance may improve slightly within three months of treatment with an ISFPP and may be similar to that of subjects with complete natural dentition. Patients may obtain a 21%-38% improvement in unilateral mastication on the treated side and a 26%-54% improvement in satisfaction with chewing ability.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To experimentally investigate the effects of increased masticatory muscle function on the transverse cranial dimensions on adult rats with an earlier reduced masticatory muscle function. MATERIAL AND METHOD Sixty young male rats were used. The experimental group received soft diet for a prolonged period, so that the animals developed weak masticatory muscles. A control group received ordinary hard food during the whole experimental period (27 weeks). After 21 weeks when the animals had nearly ceased their body growth the rats in the experimental group were divided into two groups. One group continued with soft diet until the end of the experiment (hypofunctional group). The other group received ordinary hard food to get the possibility to retrain their masticatory muscles (rehabilitation group). At week 21 and at the end of the experimental period (week 27), axial cephalograms were taken. Fourteen landmarks were defined to measure seven transverse distances of the skull. RESULTS The increase of the anterior zygomatic arch width and interzygomatic width during the experimental period were larger in the rehabilitation group compared to both the normal and the hypofunctional group. CONCLUSION Retraining of masticatory muscles in adult rats leads to increase of some transverse cranial dimensions.

Abstract
PURPOSE To retrospectively assess complications and clinical and radiographic outcomes of edentulous patients treated with double full-arch implant-supported fixed complete dental prostheses (IFCDPs) after a mean observation period of 5.1 years. MATERIALS AND METHODS The single-visit clinical and radiographic examination included medical and dental history review and clinical assessment of biologic and technical complications encountered with all implants and IFCDPs. Life table analysis and Kaplan-Meier survival curves were calculated. Analysis was conducted to evaluate the association between prosthesis survival and several risk factors such as type of opposing occlusion, nightguard use, and presence of bruxism. RESULTS Nineteen edentulous patients restored with 38 IFCDPs were included. A total of 249 implants were placed and 2 implants failed after a mean observation period of 5.1 years (range: 1-12 years), yielding an overall implant survival rate of 99.2% and prosthesis survival rate of 92.1%. Three out of 38 IFCDPs were lost, 1 after implant losses and 2 due to technical complications. The most frequent minor biologic complication was soft tissue recession with an estimated 5-year rate of 45.5% (95% CI: 39.4-57.5), while the most frequent major complication was peri-implantitis with an estimated 5-year implant-based rate of 9.5% (95% CI: 6.7-11.3). The most frequent minor technical complication was wear of the prosthetic material with an estimated 5-year rate of 49.0% (95% CI: 37.4-76.4), while the most frequent major technical complication was fracture of the prosthetic material with an estimated 5-year dental unit-based rate of 8.0% (95% CI: 6.6-10.1). CONCLUSIONS After a mean use time of 5.1 years, high implant and prosthesis survival rates were observed. The most frequent major biologic complication was peri-implantitis, and the most frequent major technical complication was fracture of the prosthetic material. The 5-year estimated cumulative rates for "prosthesis free of biologic complications" was 50.7% (95% CI: 33.7-65.4) and for "prosthesis free of technical complications" was 57.1% (95% CI: 39.3-71.5).

Abstract
PURPOSE To compare the masticatory efficiency (ME), maximum voluntary bite force (MBF), masseter muscle thickness (MMT), and salivary flow rates (SFR) in completely edentulous dependent elders treated either with a conversion of their existing mandibular complete removable dental prostheses (CRDPs) into a two-implant overdenture (IOD) or a conventional reline of the CRDP. MATERIAL AND METHODS Participants were randomly allocated into intervention (IG) and control (CG) groups. The IG received two implants in the mandibular canine regions, and their CRDPs were transformed into IODs. The CG received a conventional reline of their mandibular CRDPs. Outcomes were recorded at each recall visit (baseline, immediately, 3 months, 12 months after intervention, and subsequently on an annual basis). Statistical analyses used mixed linear regression models (level of significance: p < 0.05). RESULTS The IG comprised 16 participants (age = 85.0 ± 6.2 years), while the CG comprised 16 (age = 84.8 ± 5.4 years), with a mean follow-up of 2.7 ± 2.2 years (range: 3 months-7 years). A significant increase of MBF in the IG was observed with an overall gain of 80 N (p < 0.001) compared with the reline group. There were no significant long-term changes in SFR, MMT, or ME within/between groups. CONCLUSION Since dependent elders with mandibular IODs present a significant gain in MBF, but no relative increase in SFR, MMT, and ME, it seems that this increased capacity of MBF is not exploited by the elders during their habitual chewing.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Edentulism can reduce mastication, leading to changes in food pattern, with possible consequences to masticatory muscle thickness. OBJECTIVES This study verified masticatory function and oral perception in subjects who did not use lower CDs, and whether the insertion of new upper and lower CDs would improve such variables. METHODS Fifteen edentulous elderly who wore only the upper CD were selected and received new upper and lower CD. Volunteers were evaluated at baseline and after 1, 3 and 6 months of new prosthesis use. Masticatory performance (MP) was assessed by the sieving method (X50 values). Masseter thickness (MT) was evaluated by ultrasonography. Oral sensorial ability (OSA) was assessed by oral stereognosis test and maximum tongue pressure (MTP) was verified by pressure sensors. Data were submitted to repeated measures ANOVA and Tukey-Kramer posthoc tests (α = 0.05). Correlation between OSA and MTP was verified by Person's correlation. RESULTS X50 and MTP decreased (P < 0.05) after 1 month and remained stable (P > 0.05) for next assessments. After 3 months, MT in rest position was increased (P < 0.05), while during maximum voluntary contraction 1 month was enough to increase MT (P < 0.05). There were no differences for OSA (P > 0.05) and no correlation between OSA and MTP. CONCLUSION Masticatory performance and masseter thickness of elderly who did not use the lower dentures were improved after 2 months using new upper and lower CDs. However, new CDs in both dental arch decreased MTP. Brazilian Registry of Clinical Trials (ReBEC #RBR-37gdst).
