Abstract
BACKGROUND This case of gestational gingival tumor is huge and extremely rare in clinical practice. As the growth location of this gingival tumor is in the upper anterior tooth area, it seriously affects the pregnant woman's speech and food, causing great pain to the patient. The use of Nd:YGA water mist laser to remove the gingival tumor resulted in minimal intraoperative bleeding, minimal adverse reactions, and good postoperative healing, which is worthy of clinical promotion and application. CASE SUMMARY The patient, a pregnant woman, reported a large lump in her mouth on the first day of postpartum treatment. Based on medical history and clinical examination, the diagnosis was diagnosed as gestational gingival tumor. Postoperative pathological biopsy also confirmed this diagnosis. The use of Nd:YAG water mist laser to remove the tumor resulted in minimal intraoperative bleeding, clear surgical field of view, short surgical time, and good postoperative healing. CONCLUSION In comparison to traditional surgery, Nd:YAG water mist laser surgery is minimally invasive, minimizes cell damage, reduces bleeding, ensures a clear field of vision, and virtually eliminates postoperative edema, carbonization, and the risk of cross infection. It has unique advantages in oral soft tissue surgery for pregnant patients. Therefore, the clinical application of Nd:YAG water mist laser for the treatment of gestational gingival tumors is an ideal choice.

Abstract
Parathyroid glands secrete the parathyroid hormone that plays an essential role in bone remodeling. Excessive production of parathyroid hormone causes a common metabolic bone disorder known as hyperparathyroidism that is classified into primary, secondary, or tertiary. In hyperparathyroidism, the late bony complication is manifested as a giant cell osteolytic lesion called "brown tumor." Primary hyperparathyroidism is usually a sporadic disorder, but in minority of cases it occurs in inherited forms, and one of these forms is the hyperparathyroidism-jaw tumor syndrome, which is characterized by primary hyperparathyroidism and ossifying fibroma in the mandible and/or maxilla.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The peripheral ossifying fibroma (POF) represents one of the most common lesions of the periodontal tissues that may originate from the gingival soft tissues, the periosteum, or the periodontal ligament. AIM To investigate the immunohistochemical expression of runt-related transcription factor 2 (Runx-2), bone morphogenetic protein-2 (BMP-2), and cementum attachment protein (CAP) in oxytalan-positive POF, to establish the use of POF as an in vivo model for the study of the periodontal ligament. MATERIALS AND METHODS Thirty tumors that presented clinical and histologic features of POF, as well as oxytalan fibers, were included in the study. Immunohistochemical expression of Runx-2, BMP-2, and CAP was evaluated by light microscopy. RESULTS Runx-2, BMP-2, and CAP were abundantly expressed by POFs; 22 of 30 tumors expressed positive staining for Runx-2, twenty-six tumors for BMP-2, and twenty-five tumors for CAP. The expression of Runx-2 was abundant in POFs where bone was histologically present (P = 0.04) and of BMP-2 in POFs where dystrophic calcifications were present (P = 0.03). CONCLUSION It is suggested that oxytalan-positive POFs, purportedly originating from the periodontal ligament, express molecules that are specific to bone and cementum (Runx-2, BMP-2), or cementum only (CAP). Thus, the cell populations present in the lesion belong to the mineralized-tissue-forming cell lineages, the cementoblastic or osteoblastic lineage.

Abstract
Objectives The effects of bone morphogenetic protein-2 (BMP-2) and enamel matrix derivative (EMD) respectively with mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) on hard tissue regeneration have been investigated in previous studies. This study aimed to compare the osteogenic effects of MTA/BMP-2 and MTA/EMD treatment in MC3T3-E1 cells. Materials and Methods MC3T3-E1 cells were treated with MTA (ProRoot, Dentsply), BMP-2 (R&D Systems), EMD (Emdogain, Straumann) separately and MTA/BMP-2 or MTA/EMD combination. Mineralization was evaluated by staining the calcium deposits with alkaline phosphatase (ALP, Sigma-Aldrich) and Alizarin red (Sigma-Aldrich). The effects on the osteoblast differentiation were evaluated by the expressions of osteogenic markers, including ALP, bone sialoprotein (BSP), osteocalcin (OCN), osteopontin (OPN) and osteonectin (OSN), as determined by reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction analysis (RT-PCR, AccuPower PCR, Bioneer). Results Mineralization increased in the BMP-2 and MTA/BMP-2 groups and increased to a lesser extent in the MTA/EMD group but appeared to decrease in the MTA-only group based on Alizarin red staining. ALP expression largely decreased in the EMD and MTA/EMD groups based on ALP staining. In the MTA/BMP-2 group, mRNA expression of OPN on day 3 and BSP and OCN on day 7 significantly increased. In the MTA/EMD group, OSN and OCN gene expression significantly increased on day 7, whereas ALP expression decreased on days 3 and 7 (p < 0.05). Conclusions These results suggest the MTA/BMP-2 combination promoted more rapid differentiation in MC3T3-E1 cells than did MTA/EMD during the early mineralization period.

Abstract
The present study examined histological difference between ossifying fibromas (OF, n=5) and peripheral cemento-ossifying fibromas (PCOF, n=7). Bone morphogenetic proteins (BMP)-2 and -4, osteopontin (OPN), osteocalcin (OCN) and proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) were used for the immunohistochemical examinations. Oxytalan fibers present at the periodontal tissue were stained to determine the tumor cell origin. Many OFs showed high immunohistochemical reactions for BMP-2, -4 and OPN compared to those of PCOFs. PCNA index (IP) of OFs was significantly higher than that of PCOFs. All the PCOFs showed a high expression of oxytalan fibers. Only two OFs exhibited a small number of oxytalan fibers. These results suggest that PCOF has only little ability to form hard tissue and seems to be a reactive lesion. The expression of oxytalan fibers reveals that OF does not only originate from periodontal tissue.

Abstract
Members of the TGF-beta superfamily signal through receptor complexes comprised of type I and type II receptors. These receptors, which are serine/threonine kinases, form two new classes of transmembrane receptor kinases. The activity of both of the kinases is necessary for signal transduction in response to ligand binding. Bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs), which are members of the TGF-beta superfamily, bind to multiple type I and type II receptors. There is growing evidence to support the hypothesis that the BMP receptors are differentially regulated during development and that they have both unique and overlapping functions. Thus, the nature and distribution of the BMP receptors, which are reviewed here in the context of the development of limbs and teeth, appear to be critical in the control of the diverse activities of BMPs.

Abstract
A proliferative activity study analysing morphometric and quantitative aspects of nucleolar organizer regions (NORs) and proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) expression was conducted in 10 cases of peripheral ossifying fibroma (POF) and 10 cases of ossifying fibroma (OF). For NOR identification, the silver staining technique (AgNOR technique) was used. PCNA expression was determined by immunohistochemical staining using the PC10 antibody. The AgNOR analysis for the two lesions showed a profile characteristic of benign lesions. OF showed higher AgNOR number and PCNA expression than POF. Our results suggest increased proliferative activity in OF compared with POF.

Abstract
The well-established finding that implantation of demineralized bone matrix at non-skeletal sites results in formation of cartilage and bone has been attributed to bone morphogenetic proteins/factors. Commercially-available demineralized bone allograft materials are being used currently to reconstruct/regenerate bone. The studies described here focused on establishing biological activity of protein extracts prepared from commercially obtained bone graft material in vitro. Furthermore, the biological activity of these protein extracts in vitro was compared with similar extracts prepared from freshly obtained human bone. Biological activities of bone matrix proteins examined included their ability to promote proliferation, attachment, and migration of gingival fibroblasts using an in vitro system. Guanidine followed by guanidine/EDTA was used to separate bone matrix proteins into proteins associated with soft tissues of bone and proteins retained within the mineral compartment, respectively. Two preparations of each starting material were tested and the biological activity of each preparation was evaluated in triplicate at least three times. Slot blot analysis revealed that commercially-prepared material contained type I collagen; fibronectin; BSP; and BMP-2, 4, and 7. However, the freshly prepared bone extracts appeared to have higher BMP concentrations. The ability of commercial extracts to promote cell proliferation, while significant, was limited and significantly less when compared with similar extracts prepared from freshly obtained bone. All extracts promoted cell attachment significantly, while none of the extracts promoted cell migration. Thus, commercially-prepared material retained proteins having the capacity to influence cell behavior in vivo. However, some biological activity as measured in vitro was lost as a result of tissue processing.
