The biophysical response of the human body to electric current is widely appreciated as a barometer of fluid distribution and cell function. From distinct raw bioelectrical impedance (BIA) variables assessed in the field of body composition, phase angle (PhA) has been repeatedly indicated as a functional marker of the cell's health and mass. Although resistance training (RT) programs have demonstrated to be effective to improve PhA, with varying degrees of change depending on other raw BIA variables, there is still limited research explaining the biological mechanisms behind these changes. Here, we aim to provide the rationale for the responsiveness of PhA determinants to RT, as well as to summarize all available evidence addressing the effect of varied RT programs on PhA of different age groups. Available data led us to conclude that RT modulates the cell volume by increasing the levels of intracellular glycogen and water, thus triggering structural and functional changes in different cell organelles. These alterations lead, respectively, to shifts in the resistive path of the electric current (resistance, R) and capacitive properties of the human body (reactance, Xc), which ultimately impact PhA, considering that it is the angular transformation of the ratio between Xc and R. Evidence drawn from experimental research suggests that RT is highly effective for enhancing PhA, especially when adopting high-intensity, volume, and duration RT programs combining other types of exercise. Still, additional research exploring the effects of RT on whole-body and regional BIA variables of alternative population groups is recommended for further knowledge development.

BioTouch: Reliable Re-Authentication via Finger Bio-Capacitance and Touching Behavior

Re-authentication continuously checks to see if a user is authorized during a whole usage session, enhancing secrecy capabilities for computational devices, especially against insider attacks. However, it is challenging to design a reliable re-authentication scheme with accuracy, transparency and robustness. Specifically, the approaches of using biometric features (e.g., fingerprint, iris) are often accurate in identifying users but not transparent to them due to the need for user cooperation. On the other hand, while the approaches exploiting behavior features (e.g., touch-screen gesture, movement) are often transparent in use, their applications suffer from low accuracy and robustness as behavior information collected is subjective and may change frequently over different use situations and even user’s motion. In this paper, we propose BioTouch, a reliable re-authentication scheme that satisfies all the above requirements. First, BioTouch utilizes multiple features (finger capacitance and touching behavior) to identify the user for better accuracy. Second, BioTouch automatically works during user operation on capacitive-touch devices, achieving transparency without the need for manual assistance. Finally, by applying finger bio-capacitance, BioTouch is also robust to various conditions, as this feature is determined by the user’s physical characteristics and will not change by different user positions and motions. We implement BioTouch for proof-of-concept and conduct comprehensive evaluations. The results show that BioTouch can flag 98% of anomalous behaviors within ten touching operations and achieve up to 99.84% accuracy during usage.

The altered fluid distribution in obesity may reflect plasma hypertonicity

OBJECTIVE

This study explored whether the increased extracellular relative to intracellular fluid (ECF/ICF) ratio in obesity might reflect osmotic effects of elevated plasma solute concentrations.

DESIGN

Cross-sectional, epidemiological survey.

SETTING AND SUBJECTS

The present analysis used nationally representative data from the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey on community-dwelling adults (aged 40-59 years) in the US without evidence of glucose dysregulation or chronic disease (n=1285).

INTERVENTION

Body mass index (BMI) was estimated from measured height and weight. Total body reactance, an index of body fluid distribution, was determined by bioelectrical impedance analysis. Plasma tonicity (the cumulative index of osmotically effective plasma solute) was estimated from plasma glucose, sodium and potassium. Sex-specific relative odds of lower reactance (<or=50 Omega/m for women, <or=40 Omega/m for men) and plasma hypertonicity (tonicity >or=295 mmol/l) associated with overweight (25<or=BMI <30) and obesity (BMI>or=30) were estimated using logistic regression models that controlled for sociodemographic variables, smoking, leisure-time physical activity, total energy intake, serum creatinine, plasma insulin and glucose. Multinomial logistic regression models tested for associations between weight status and specific serum solute.

RESULTS

Independent of covariates, in men and women, overweight and obesity were associated with increased odds of lower reactance and hypertonicity. Overweight and obese individuals with lower reactance had significantly higher serum sodium than normal weight individuals.

CONCLUSIONS

Elevated plasma solute concentrations are associated with obesity in free-living adults. Physicians and researchers should be alert to a possible link between hypertonicity and obesity.

Estimation of maximal oxygen uptake by bioelectrical impedance analysis

Previous non-exercise models for the prediction of maximal oxygen uptake VO(2max) have failed to accurately discriminate cardiorespiratory fitness within large cohorts. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the feasibility of a completely indirect method for predicting VO(2max) that was based on bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) in 66 young, healthy fit men and women. Multiple, stepwise regression analysis was used to determine the usefulness of BIA and additional covariates to estimate VO(2max) (ml min(-1)). BIA was highly correlated to VO(2max) (r = 0.914; P < 0.001) and entered the regression equation first. The inclusion of gender and a physical activity rating further improved the model which accounted for 88% of the variance in VO(2max) and resulted in a relative standard error of the estimate (SEE) of 7.2%. Substantial agreement between the methods was confirmed by the fact that nearly all the differences were within +/-2 SD. Furthermore, in contrast to previously published non-exercise models, no trend of a reduction in prediction accuracy with increasing VO(2max) values was apparent. It was concluded that a non-exercise model based on BIA might be a rapid and useful technique to estimate VO(2max), when a direct test does not seem feasible. However, though the present results are useful to determine the viability of the method, further refinement of the BIA approach and its validation in a large, diverse population is needed before it can be applied to the clinical and epidemiological settings.

Validation of different bioimpedance analyzers for predicting cell mass against whole-body counting of potassium (40K) as a reference method

This study compared two different tetrapolar bioimpedance (BIA) devices for estimating body cell mass (BCM), validated them against whole-body counting of (40)K (TBK method), and developed improved prediction equations for estimating BCM from BIA. In 50 healthy volunteers (age 23-65 years, BMI 18.6-27.7 kg/m(2)), BCM was estimated with the BIA devices Nutriguard-M (Data Input, Germany) and Soft-Tissue-Analyzer-STA (Akern, Italy) and by the TBK method. Methods were compared by the Bland-Altman procedure. New prediction equations for BCM were developed by multiple stepwise regression analysis based on a single BIA parallel model. The Akern device gives similar mean estimates of BCM compared to the Data Input device in males (33.5 vs. 33.3 kg, P = 0.789), but higher values in females (24.6 vs. 22.8 kg; P < 0.001). Both BIA devices overestimate mean BCM relative to the TBK method; in males by 5.0 kg (Data Input, P < 0.001) and 5.1 kg (Akern, P < 0.001); in females by 2.3 kg (Data Input, P < 0.001) and 4.1 kg (Akern, P < 0.001). Limits of agreement between BIA and TBK methods are for males +/-4.99 kg (Data Input) and +/-7.16 kg (Akern); for females, +/-4.69 kg (Data Input) and +/-4.12 kg (Akern). New equations were developed for estimating BCM for both BIA analyzers (Data Input, R(2) = 0.91, SEE = 1.46 kg; Akern, R(2) = 0.90, SEE = 1.48 kg). Since estimates of BCM by the present BIA devices do not differ in males, they might be interchangeable. This does not hold true for females. Because both BIA devices overestimate BCM, the newly developed device-specific equations which reduce bias and limits of agreement should be applied.

Body composition analysis by bioelectrical impedance in chronic maintenance dialysis patients: comparisons to the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey III

OBJECTIVE

To compare bioelectrical impedance analysis derived parameters in chronic maintenance dialysis patients to those obtained in National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) III.

DESIGN

Cross-sectional nutritional surveillance study.

SETTING

Hospital-based, not-for-profit chronic maintenance dialysis center.

PATIENTS

A total of 913 chronic maintenance dialysis patients and a subset of 10,263 subjects from NHANES III who underwent bioelectrical impedance analysis. Independent (Predictor) Variables: Bioelectrical impedance parameters including resistance, reactance, phase angle, and total body capacitance.

MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES

Total body water, intracellular and extracellular water, body cell mass, fat free mass, fat mass.

RESULTS

Relative to NHANES III, end-stage renal disease patients have lower resistance (3%), reactance (26%), phase angle (28%); and intracellular water (9%) values, whereas extracellular water content is 17% higher (P < .001). In addition, body cell mass, fat free mass, and fat mass were lower in end-stage renal disease patients when compared with NHANES III subjects (9%, 3%, and 12%, respectively; P < .001).

CONCLUSIONS

End-stage renal disease patients have a lower tissue mass than the general population and remain in a state of overhydration while on chronic maintenance dialysis therapy.
