Abstract
BACKGROUND Shift work is inevitable for nurses in intensive care units. Various studies explored nurses' fatigue in multiple hospital wards. However, few studies focused on fatigue among nurses in intensive care units. AIMS To determine the association between shift work schedules, compensatory sleep, work-family conflict, and fatigue of shift-working nurses in critical care units. STUDY DESIGN A descriptive cross-sectional multi-center study was conducted in March 2022 among intensive care nurses from five hospitals. METHODS Data were collected by online survey, including self-designed demographic questions, the Fatigue Scale-14, the Chinese adult daytime sleepiness scale, and the work-family scale. Pearson correlation was conducted for bivariate analysis. Independent-sample t-test, one-way ANOVA, and multiple linear regression analysis were performed to examine fatigue-related variables. RESULTS A total of 326 nurses responded to the survey with an effective response rate of 74.9%. The mean scores of physical fatigue and mental fatigue were 6.80 and 3.72, respectively. The bivariate analyses showed that work-family conflict was positively correlated with physical (r = 0.483, p < .001) and mental fatigue (r = 0.406, p < .001). Multiple linear regression results showed that work-family conflict, daytime sleepiness, and shift system were statistically significant factors influencing physical fatigue (F = 41.793, p < .001). Work-family conflict, sleep duration after the night shift, and daytime sleepiness were the main influencing factors of mental fatigue (F = 25.105, p < .001). CONCLUSIONS Nurses with higher work-family conflict, daytime sleepiness, and working 12-h shifts have higher levels of physical fatigue. Higher work-family conflict, shorter sleep duration after night shifts, and daytime sleepiness are associated with higher mental fatigue among intensive care nurses. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE Nursing managers and nurses should consider work-family factors and compensatory sleep in their efforts to reduce fatigue. It is necessary to strengthen work-supporting strategies and compensatory sleep guidance for nurses to promote fatigue recovery.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This cross-sectional study aimed to explore the characteristics, content, and context of rest breaks taken by hospital nurses. BACKGROUND Nurses often miss, skip, or take interrupted breaks. To improve the quality of breaks and promote within-shift recovery, it is important to understand current rest break practices including break activities and contextual challenges around them. METHODS Survey data from 806 nurses were collected between October and November 2021. RESULTS Most nurses did not take regular breaks. Rest breaks were often interrupted, spent being worried about work, and rarely resulted in a relaxed state. Common break activities were having a meal or a snack, and browsing the Internet. Regardless of workload, nurses considered patient acuity, staffing, and unfinished nursing tasks when deciding to take breaks. CONCLUSION Rest break practices are of poor quality. Nurses mainly consider workload-related factors when taking breaks, which warrants the attention of nursing administration.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Nurses who work at night have used naps to alleviate their sleepiness and fatigue. Research has shown night shifts, sleepiness, and fatigue predict nurses' missed workdays. Thus, nighttime napping may have a beneficial consequence of reducing nurses' sickness absences. The purpose of this brief report was to describe the difference in rates of short-term sickness absence before and after implementation of a 30-min nap opportunity in one U.S. hospital for 12-hr shift nurses. METHODS The study was a retrospective pre-post evaluation design. Eight units provided nap opportunities for the nurses. Full-time nurses were classified into night and rotating shifts based on their 2 years of scheduling patterns. Absence data were extracted from the hospital's timekeeping system and annual absence rates were computed. A single linear mixed model with rank transformed data was conducted for each group. Median estimates, minimum and maximum, and p-values were reported. FINDINGS The median absence rates for night shift nurses were 4.3% and 4.0% for the pre-napping and post-napping implementation periods, respectively; however, this difference was not statistically significant (p = .241). The median absence rates for rotating shift nurses were 2.0% and 3.9% for the pre-napping and post-napping implementation periods, respectively; and the difference increase was statistically significant (p < .001). CONCLUSION/APPLICATION TO PRACTICE A nap policy which provides nurses with the opportunity to take nighttime naps did not benefit their sickness absence rates. Future research needs to examine the actual napping process on sickness absences, as well as explore other sickness management avenues.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The objective of this review was to examine the available evidence on the experiences and perceptions of nurses working the night shift within any specialty in the acute care, subacute, or long-term care setting. INTRODUCTION Nurses are required for around-the-clock patient care. Night shift nurses can experience detrimental effects because of their work hours, which disrupt their normal circadian rhythm. Understanding nurses' experiences and perceptions when working night shift will facilitate the development of strategies to minimize the potential negative effects of working at night. In examining nurses' experiences and perceptions of working night shift, there is scope to explore how to improve night shift nurses' practice environment and job satisfaction, which will then translate to improved nurse and patient outcomes. INCLUSION CRITERIA This review included qualitative studies focused on the experiences and perceptions of registered nurses and licensed practical nurses who work the night shift or rotate between day and night shift. METHODS This review followed the JBI methodology for systematic reviews of qualitative evidence. The methodology used was consistent with the a priori protocol. Studies included in this review were those published in full text, English, and between 1983 (when the seminal work on hospitals that attract and retain nurses was published) and February 2021, when the search was completed. The main databases searched for published and unpublished studies included MEDLINE, CINAHL, Embase, PsycINFO, and Web of Science.From the search, two reviewers independently screened the studies against the inclusion criteria, and then papers selected for inclusion were assessed for methodological quality. Qualitative data were extracted from the included papers independently by the four reviewers. Results from each reviewer were discussed and clarified to reach agreement. The extracted findings were pooled and examined for shared meaning, coded, and grouped into categories. Common categories were grouped into meta-synthesis to produce a comprehensive set of synthesized findings. The final synthesized findings were graded using the ConQual approach to determine the level of confidence (trust) users may have in the value of the synthesized findings. RESULTS Thirty-four papers, representing 33 studies, met the criteria for inclusion. The studies were conducted in 11 countries across six continents, with a total of 601 participants. From these, a total of 220 findings were extracted and combined to form 11 categories based on similarity in meaning, and three syntheses were derived: i) The "Other" Shift: the distinctiveness of night nursing; ii) Juggling sleep and all aspects of life when working nights; and iii) Existing in the Twilight Zone: battling the negative impact of sleep deprivation consumes nurses who strive to keep patients, self, and others safe. CONCLUSIONS The major conclusions from this review are the uniqueness of working the night shift and the sleep deprivation of night nurses. Organizational strategies and support are needed for those working this shift, which will enhance nurse and patient safety. SYSTEMATIC REVIEW REGISTRATION NUMBER PROSPERO CRD42019135294.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The services of Healthcare and Social Assistance (HCSA) workers are needed by society around the clock. As a result, these workers are exposed to shift work and long work hours. The combination of demanding work schedules and other hazards in the HCSA work environment increases the health and safety risks to these workers, as well as to their patients/clients and the public. METHODS This paper has three aims: (1) provide an overview of the burden of shift work, long hours, and related sleep and fatigue problems in this sector; (2) suggest research priorities that would improve these; and (3) discuss potential positive impacts of addressing these research priorities for the health and safety of workers and the public. The authors used a modified Delphi approach to anonymously rank-order priorities for improving HCSA worker health and safety and public safety. Input was also obtained from attendees at the 2019 National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Work Hours, Sleep, and Fatigue Forum. RESULTS The highest rated research priorities were developing better designs for work schedules, and improving the HCSA culture and leadership approaches to shift work and long work hours. Additional priorities are identified. CONCLUSION Research in these priority areas has the potential to benefit HCSA workers as well as their patients/clients, employers, and society.

Abstract
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES To investigate, for the first time, aberrant time-varying local brain activity in nurses following night shift-related sleep deprivation (SD) and its association with memory decline. BACKGROUND Prior studies have elucidated alterations in static local brain activity resulting from SD in the occupations outside medical profession. DESIGN A longitudinal study followed the STROBE recommendations. METHODS Twenty female nurses underwent resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging and memory function assessment (by Complex Figure Test (CFT) and the California Verbal Learning Test, Second Edition (CVLT-II)) twice, once in a rested wakefulness (RW) state and another after SD. By combining the sliding-window approach and amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (ALFF) analysis, the dynamic ALFF (dALFF) variability was calculated to reflect the characteristics of dynamic local brain activity. RESULTS Poor performance on the CFT and CVLT-II was observed in nurses with night shift-related SD. Reduced dALFF variability was found in a set of cognition-related brain regions (including the medial/middle/superior frontal gyrus, anterior/posterior cingulate gyrus, precuneus, angular gyrus, orbitofrontal and subgenual areas, and posterior cerebellum lobe), while increased dALFF variability was observed in the somatosensory-related, visual and auditory regions. SD-related dALFF variability alterations correlated with changes in subjects' performance on the CFT and CVLT-II. CONCLUSIONS Night shift-related SD disturbed dynamic brain activity in high cognitive regions and induced compensatory reactions in primary perceptual cortex. Identifying dALFF variability abnormalities may broaden our understanding of neural substrates underlying SD-related cognitive alterations, especially memory dysfunction. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE Night shift-related SD is as an important occupational hazard affecting brain function in nurses. The effective countermeasure addressing the adverse outcomes of SD should be advocated for nurses. Effects of 90 Min Napping on Fatigue and Associated Environmental Factors among Nurses Working Long Night Shifts: A Longitudinal Observational Study. Abstract
For nurses working long night shifts, it is imperative that they have the ability to take naps to reduce fatigue, and that an appropriate environment is prepared where such naps can be taken. We verified the effects of 90 min napping on fatigue and the associated factors among nurses working 16-h night shifts. We investigated 196-night shifts among 49 nurses for one month. Wearable devices, data logging devices, and questionnaires were used to assess nap parameters, fatigue, and environmental factors such as the napping environment, ways of spending breaks, and working environment. Nurses who nap at least 90 min on most night shifts had more nursing experience. Multivariable logistic regression analysis showed that the environmental factors significantly associated with total nap duration (TND) ≥ 90 min were noise, time spent on electronic devices such as cellphones and tablets during breaks, and nap break duration. The night shifts with TND ≥ 90 min showed lower drowsiness after nap breaks and less fatigue at the end of night shift compared to those with TND < 90 min. Nurses and nursing managers should recognize the importance of napping and make adjustments to nap for at least 90 min during long night shifts.

Abstract
Poor recovery from fatigue among shift-working nurses can cause a transition from acute to chronic fatigue. We aimed to clarify the relationship between nurses' recovery from fatigue and sleep episodes after 16 h night shifts while considering age. This prospective study included 62 nurses who worked 16 h night shifts. Fatigue was assessed by a questionnaire before, during, and after the night shift, and the morning following the night shift. Sleep episodes were continuously measured using a wearable device. We performed a hierarchical cluster analysis of multivariate sleep parameters in first and main sleep episodes after night shifts. A linear mixed model was used to estimate the difference between clusters in recovery from fatigue after the night shift, considering age. The participants were classified into a high sleep quality group (HSQG) and low sleep quality group (LSQG) in sleep episodes after the night shift. There was a significant main effect of clusters, and HSQG was significantly more effective than LSQG in recovering from fatigue. However, no main effects of age or interaction were observed. The quality of first and main sleep episodes at home was associated with recovery from the night shift to the next day, regardless of age.

Abstract
Background Healthcare workers need to be at work 24 h a day to ensure continuity of care in hospitals. However, shift work - particularly night shifts - can have negative acute and long-term effects on health and productivity due to disturbances in the circadian rhythm. Shift work is also associated with unhealthy lifestyle behaviors such as poor sleep hygiene and diet. The PerfectFit@Night intervention aims to improve sleep and recovery, and reduce fatigue, and therewith contribute to sustainable employability of healthcare workers. The current study describes the intervention and the evaluation and implementation. Methods The study population will consist of healthcare workers, nurses and physicians, with night shifts in a large Dutch academic hospital. The intervention consists of individual and environmental intervention elements: i) an e-learning for healthcare workers to increase knowledge and awareness on a healthy lifestyle during night shifts, ii) a powernap bed to take powernaps during night shifts, iii) the availability of healthy food at the department during night shifts, iv) a workshop on healthy rostering at the level of the department, and v) individual sleep coaching among the high risk group. In a longitudinal prospective study, data will be collected 1 month before the start of the intervention, in the week before the start of the intervention, and three and 6 months after the start of the intervention. The primary outcomes are sleep, fatigue, and need for recovery. The implementation process will be evaluated using the framework of Steckler and Linnan. Cost-benefit analyses from the employers perspective will be conducted to understand the possible financial consequences or benefits of the implementation of PerfectFit@Night. Discussion The feasibility and effectiveness of this workplace health promotion program will be investigated by means of an effect, process and economic evaluation. Abstract
AIMS To identify patterns of declining alertness at work among fixed night shift nurses using an objective measure and to determine the effect of sleep parameters on the decline in alertness at work. DESIGN A prospective observational study. METHODS Data were collected from 65 fixed night shift nurses who provided direct nursing care for patients in Korean hospitals between September 2020 and March 2021. Participants wore an actigraph for 14 days on their non-dominant hand to measure sleep parameters and predict their hourly alertness scores. They completed an online survey to provide their demographic information. Mixed-effect models were employed to determine the association between sleep parameters and the decline in alertness. RESULTS The alertness scores of fixed night shift nurses constantly dropped every working hour. Scores dropped below 20% after 4 h from the beginning of the shift and below 30% after 6 h. Increased minutes in bed, minutes asleep and sleep efficiency reduced the risk of decreased alertness scores below 70. Increased sleep latency was associated with an increased risk of alertness scores dropping below 70. CONCLUSION The alertness of fixed night shift nurses drops steeply during regular hours and remains low during overtime. Sleep parameters contribute to the decline in alertness at work among fixed night shift nurses. IMPACT This study identified patterns of decline in alertness among fixed night shift nurses and the contributing factors for this decline, using an objective measure. The findings have important implications for the development of future interventions to improve the sleep hygiene of fixed night shift nurses to enhance their alertness at work.

Abstract
PURPOSE The aim of this study was to identify the patterns of the decline in the alertness of rotating-shift nurses during working hours across different shift types (day, evening, and night) using an objective measure. DESIGN An observational study using ReadiBand wrist actigraphs was conducted. METHODS Data were collected from June 2019 to February 2020. Participants were rotating-shift nurses (N = 82) who provided direct nursing care for patients in acute care hospitals in South Korea. Nurses wore actigraphs continuously for 14 days on their non-dominant hand to identify sleep-wake cycles and predict their alertness scores hourly. All participants completed a sleep diary. FINDINGS Nurses working during night shifts had lower average alertness scores (mean = 77.12) than nurses working during day (mean = 79.05) and evening (mean = 91.21). Overall, alertness showed a declining trend and the specific patterns of decline differed across shifts. Participants with alertness scores less than 70 or 80 demonstrated a significant decline in alertness across all shifts. CONCLUSIONS Distinct patterns of decline in alertness per nursing shift were revealed. Each shift feature should be considered when developing interventions to increase nurses' alertness, promote high-quality care provision, and ensure patient safety. CLINICAL RELEVANCE The implementation of interventions to increase alertness among shift nurses is needed at the organizational level, and the cooperation of nursing managers and administrators is required.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sleep problems are common among nurses compared with the general population. Poor sleep quality increases the risk of developing cardiovascular disease (CVD). The relationship between sleep quality and CVD risk has not been previously investigated among Hong Kong female nurses. OBJECTIVE The authors of this study explored the association between sleep quality and CVD risk among Hong Kong female nurses. METHODS Data were collected from the Hong Kong Women's Health Study cross-sectional survey between 2019 and 2020. Questionnaires were sent to female nurses (≥aged 30 years). Ten-year CVD risk was measured using the Framingham 10-year risk score, and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) was used to evaluate sleep quality. Relationships were evaluated using adjusted multiple linear regression and binary logistic regression. RESULTS In 1344 respondents, the mean age was 46.12 ± 10.47 years, average PSQI score was 6.02 (3.35), and 52.4% reported poor sleeping quality (global PSQI score > 5). The mean 10-year CVD risk was 3.6% (3.3%). The 10-year CVD risk was significantly associated with sleep disturbance (β = 0.006) and daytime dysfunction (β = -0.002) (both Ps < .01). Participants who reported sleep disturbance had a higher CVD risk (odds ratio, 1.82; 95% confidence interval, 1.04-3.18). High daytime dysfunction decreased CVD risk (odds ratio, 0.63; 95% confidence interval, 0.46-0.85). Subgroup analysis showed stronger associations between sleep quality and Framingham 10-year risk score among those unemployed, undergoing postmenopause, or with a family history of CVDs. CONCLUSIONS Sleep disturbance and daytime dysfunction were associated with the 10-year CVD risk among Hong Kong female nurses. Nurses who were unemployed, were undergoing postmenopause, or with a family history of CVD were those with the highest risk.

Abstract
We performed a systematic review of four databases to determine if the evidence supports a short or long duration nap during night shifts to mitigate fatigue, and/or improve health, safety, or performance for emergency services and public safety personnel (PROSPERO CRD42020156780). We focused on experimental research and evaluated the quality of evidence with the grading of recommendations, assessment, development, and evaluation (GRADE) framework. We used the Cochrane Collaboration's risk of bias tool to assess bias and reported findings using the preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses (PRISMA) statement. Our search yielded n = 10,345 records and n = 44 were reviewed in full-text. Inter-rater agreement during screening was substantial (Kappa = 0.66). We retained n = 11 publications, reporting on n = 7 experimental studies with a cumulative sample size of n = 140. We identified wide variation in study design, napping interventions (i.e., timing, placement, and duration), and outcomes. We identified mixed findings comparing brief, moderate, and long duration naps on outcomes of interest. All seven studies presented serious risk of bias and the quality of evidence was rated as low. Based on the best available evidence, decisions regarding nap duration during night shift work should be based on time (post-nap) and outcome.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To examine the associations between four sleep behaviors and the risk of healthspan termination. METHODS This study included 323,373 participants, free of terminated healthspan at baseline, from the UK-Biobank (UKB). We applied multivariable-adjusted Cox regression models to estimate the risk of terminated healthspan based on four sleep behaviors (insomnia/sleeplessness, napping, daytime sleepiness, and difficulty getting up from bed), which were self-reported and measured on Likert scales from "usually" to "never/rarely" experiences. In this study, healthspan was defined based on eight events that are strongly associated with longevity (congestive heart failure, myocardial infarction, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, stroke, dementia, diabetes, cancer, and death). RESULTS Participants who reported the following unhealthy sleep behaviors had a significantly higher risk of terminated healthspan: "usually experience sleeplessness/insomnia" (HR = 1.05, 95% CI: 1.03-1.07; P < 0.001); "usually nap" (HR = 1.22, 95% CI: 1.18-1.26; P < 0.01); "excessive daytime sleepiness" (HR = 1.25, 95% CI: 1.19-1.32; P < 0.001); and "difficult getting up from bed" (HR = 1.08, 95% CI: 1.05-1.10; P < 0.001). The corresponding population attributable risk percentage (PAR%) indicated that about 7% of healthspan termination in this cohort would have been eliminated if all participants had healthy sleep behaviors. CONCLUSION Participants who reported "usually experience sleeplessness/insomnia," "usually nap," "excessive daytime sleepiness," and "difficult getting up from bed" had increased risk of shortened healthspan. Therefore, adherence to healthy sleep behavior is significant for the extension of healthspan.

Abstract
Working nonstandard work schedules is often associated with increased sedentary behavior and risk of sleep disorders. Night shift workers are prone to accumulating sleep debt, which they recover by sleeping during the day. The effect on daytime activity levels is unknown. The present study aims to objectively assess whether daytime sleep could affect daytime activity levels of shift worker nurses, resulting in an accumulation of their activity debt differently between working and rest periods. The study population (N = 37; mean age 41.7 ± 9.1 years) was composed of orthopedic nurses working on a rotating schedule, including either a night shift (NS) or only day/afternoon shift (DS). Actigraph monitoring lasted both on the working and the rest period. For the NS nurses, the working period recorded higher daytime activity levels than the rest period, while daytime sleep during the working and rest periods was similar. Conversely, DS nurses showed higher daytime activity levels and shorter daytime sleep during the working period. NS nurses were less active than DS nurses during the working period, probably because NS tended to have a longer daytime sleep. During the rest period, daytime activity levels for both groups were decreased. For NS nurses, sleep recorded the better sleep parameters during the rest period, while sleep parameters did not show significant differences between the working and the rest periods in DS. During the working period, NS nurses slept worse than the DS nurses. Both groups tended to accumulate a debt in daytime activity levels during the rest period. While daytime sleep may be an excellent way to counteract sleep debt and increase sleep duration over 24 h period, on the other hand, it makes nurses less active.

Abstract
Aim Hospitals operate on a 24‐hr basis, with shiftwork being unavoidable for most nurses. This study aims to explore the impact of night shiftwork rotations on nurses' physiological status, work performance and patient safety concerns among nurses in public hospitals. Design A descriptive predictive correlational design using a self‐administered questionnaire. Methods Electronic and printable survey questionnaires were distrusted among nurses working in public hospitals in multiple regions of Saudi Arabia. The study recruited 1,256 nurses from different nationalities, hospital work units and work experience. Results A large proportion of nurses on night shiftwork encountered patient safety issues (85.7%) and physiological consequences (93.6%). Counselling sessions and programmes to support at‐risk nurses are recommended.

Abstract
Aim To investigate the effects of a napping facility and therapy glasses on fatigue and well‐being at the end of the night shift. Background Night shift work has adverse effects on fatigue and well‐being. Methods A quasi‐experimental study was conducted, and data were collected on 243 night shifts of 95 nurses who had either access to a napping facility, therapy glasses, both facilities or no facilities. Multilevel analyses were conducted to predict fatigue and well‐being. Results Night shifts of nurses having access to both facilities were associated with less fatigue and more well‐being. The use of therapy glasses related negatively to fatigue and positively to well‐being. The use of the napping facility was not associated with fatigue and well‐being. However, having slept while napping and sleeping time during napping were negatively associated with fatigue and positively associated with well‐being. Conclusion Therapy glasses and sleeping in a napping facility can be effective interventions in reducing the adverse effects of night shift work. Implications for Nursing Management Therapy glasses seem an effective investment to facilitate the well‐being of nurses. To enhance sleeping during napping, it is worthwhile to let nurses get accustomed to the napping facility and customize settings to personal preferences.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Fatigue influences doctors' physical and mental health seriously, additionally, the topic has received wide attention recently. This study aimed to identify the association among resilience, perceived organizational support (POS) and fatigue, and to further explore whether POS could be a moderator in the association between resilience and fatigue in Chinese doctors. METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted in Liaoning Province in China in 2018. Out of 1000 randomly selected doctors, 866 completed the Chalder Fatigue Scale, the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale, Survey of Perceived Organizational Support, and the questions about demographic characteristics and job condition variables. The association among resilience, POS and resilience × POS interaction with physical and mental fatigue were examined by hierarchical multiple regression. Simple slope analysis was conducted to visualize the interaction. RESULTS The association between resilience and physical fatigue was gradually increased in the low (1 standard deviation [SD] below the mean, β = -0.127, P< 0.05), mean (β = -0.292, P < 0.05) and high (1 SD above the mean, β = -0.457, P < 0.05) groups of POS. Additionally, the association was also different in the low (1 SD below the mean, β = -0.240, P < 0.01), mean (β = -0.357, P < 0.01) and high (1 SD above the mean, β = -0.474, P < 0.01) groups of POS. LIMITATIONS Due to the cross-sectional design, the study cannot draw any conclusion of causal relationships among study variables. CONCLUSIONS POS could moderate the association among resilience, physical and mental fatigue. More interventions related to resilience and POS will be helpful to alleviate fatigue among Chinese doctors.

Abstract
PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to identify the quality of sleep in novice and experienced shift work nurses and compare the factors associated with their quality of sleep. METHODS We analyzed the data of 192 and 256 novice and experienced nurses, respectively. The quality of sleep, sleep hygiene, job stress, and fatigue were measured using Insomnia Severity Index, Sleep Hygiene Practice Scale, the Korean Occupational Stress Scale, and Fatigue Severity Scale. Data were analyzed using SPSS 25.0 to calculate descriptive statistics and logistic regression. RESULTS Sleep quality was lower in experienced nurses (12.55 ± 5.71) than in novice nurses (11.18 ± 5.78). Fatigue was more severe in experienced nurses (4.47 ± 1.13) than in novice nurses (4.23 ± 1.12). In the logistic regression, factors related to sleep quality in novice nurses were sleep hygiene (odds ratio; OR = 1.06, p < .001) and fatigue (OR = 2.49, p < .001). Factors related to sleep quality in the experienced nurses were also sleep hygiene (OR = 1.04, p = .001) and fatigue (OR = 1.53, p = .012). CONCLUSION Sleep quality of experienced nurses is lower than those of novice nurses. Factors associated with sleep quality in novice and experienced nurses are equally identified as sleep hygiene and fatigue. Therefore, personal efforts to improve sleep hygiene, such as providing comfortable sleep environment, are needed. Furthermore, organized efforts to decrease fatigue, such as constructing a working environment with a bright light at night and providing a fatigue-decreasing program that includes meditation, are required.

Abstract
Purpose: Nurses are undertaking considerable emotional and physical work, which may lead to unrecoverable fatigue. This study aimed to evaluate the level of chronic fatigue and explore its associated factors among Chinese nurses in the hope of providing scientific evidence for fatigue-reduction strategies. Methods: This cross-sectional study was carried out in Liaoning Province, China in 2018. The study recruited 700 nurses and collected 566 effective respondents. Chronic fatigue, demographic factors, job conditions, and emotional intelligence were assessed through questionnaires. Chronic fatigue was assessed with the Fatigue Scale 11, occupational stress with the Effort–Reward Imbalance Questionnaire, and emotional intelligence with the Wong and Law Emotional Intelligence Scale. Hierarchical multiple regression was used to explore factors related to chronic fatigue and to test the moderating effect of emotional intelligence on the association between occupational stress and chronic fatigue. Simple slope analysis was conducted to visualize the interaction. Results: The mean score of chronic fatigue among the Chinese nurses was 17.14±6.16. Being married, having long weekly work time, working night shifts, and discontent with the nurse–patient relationship were positively associated with chronic fatigue. Effort:reward ratio, overcommitment, and emotional intelligence were important factors related to chronic fatigue. Emotional intelligence played a moderating role in the relationship between the effort:reward ratio and chronic fatigue. When emotional intelligence was higher, the effect of the effort:reward ratio on chronic fatigue became weaker. Conclusion: Most nurses surveyed in China might have relatively high levels of chronic fatigue. Our results highlight the importance of interventions on these factors for the reduction of fatigue among nurses in China. Providing more opportunities and support and developing emotional intelligence are crucial strategies to reduce chronic fatigue among nurses in China.
