Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study examined the association between willingness-to-respond (WTR) and behavioral factors among emergency department health care workers (HCWs) during a pandemic situation in Pakistan. METHODS A cross-sectional survey was conducted between August and September 2022, involving health care workers from 2 hospitals located in Karachi, Pakistan. Participants were recruited using a non-probability purposive sampling method. The survey instrument was designed based on Witte's Extended Parallel Process Model (EPPM). Multivariate logistic regression analyses were used to investigate the relationship between WTR and HCWs' attitudes, beliefs, and EPPM profiles. RESULTS Health workers' overall willingness to respond was 52.57% if required and 52.26% if asked. Female health workers showed 1.78 greater odds of WTR if required, compared to male health workers. Health workers who reported high efficacy were 21 times more likely to report to work during pandemics when required and 6 times more likely to report if asked compared to those with low efficacy. CONCLUSION This study explored health care workers' willingness to respond during a pandemic. Female health care workers and those in clinical roles were more likely to be willing to respond during an influenza pandemic. Enhancing self-efficacy, knowledge, and addressing perceived risks can significantly improve workforce preparedness for future pandemics.

Abstract
Introduction Previous studies have shown that, during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, nurses were being reassigned to non-COVID-19 wards, opting to take leave, or resigning because of concerns of infecting their families. Even so, many nurses decided to continue working. However, a literature review revealed a lack of research clarifying how nurses coped with their anxiety and came to the decision to work in a COVID-19 intensive care unit. Objective To determine the process by which nurses living with their families decided to work in an intensive care unit during the COVID-19 pandemic and the factors that influenced their decision. Methods Fifteen registered nurses who lived with their families and decided to work in a COVID-19 intensive care unit during the pandemic were recruited for an individual, semi-structured interview. Charmaz's constructivist grounded theory was used to analyze the transcripts. Results Four core categories were identified. When the nurses perceived their facility would accept a patient with COVID-19, they: (1) assessed the risk of infection to their family, (2) weighed their anxiety against their sense of mission, (3) reduced the risk of infection, and (4) discussed the decision with their family members. Conclusion The decision involved fear of infecting families, trust in the hospital, and sense of mission. Hospitals' consideration of the situation was important in motivating employees and reducing anxiety. There was a gender bias in this study. The large number of male participants resulted from the characteristics of the participating COVID-19 intensive care units, reflecting gender roles in Japan, where men often work and women are responsible for housework and childcare. Facilities and managers should foster a workplace culture that values employees, even in ordinary times. Our findings may help healthcare organizations support nurses in an emerging infectious disease pandemic and ensure nurses are available in healthcare systems with limited resources.

Abstract
Background The World Health Organization declared that coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) constitutes an international public health emergency, which has strained health resources. In this study, we aimed to understand medical students' willingness to join the workforce fighting against the COVID-19 pandemic and identify factors associated with their decisions. Methods We conducted a nationwide cross-sectional study using the Wen-Juan-Xing platform and a pre-designed questionnaire from 23 March to 19 April 2021. We conducted logistic regression analyses to identify the determinants associated with the willingness. Results Among the 5022 medical students, the majority (n = 4289, 85.40%) expressed willingness to work on the COVID-19 frontline. Logistic regression indicated that medical students' willingness to work on the COVID-19 frontline in China was associated with gender, region, reason for choosing medicine, having medical workers in the family, students whose family members, relatives or friends experienced COVID-19, and professional attitude. Females (odds ratio (OR) = 1.305; 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.100-1.549; P = 0.0023), medical students from urban areas (OR = 1.295; 95% CI = 1.089-1.539; P = 0.0034), medical students whose choice of a medical career was their desire (OR = 1.579; 95% CI = 1.290-1.933; P < 0.0001), medical students whose parents or relatives are medical workers (OR = 1.266; 95% CI = 1.066-1.505; P = 0.0073), medical students whose family members, relatives, or friends have never been infected with COVID-19 (OR = 4.567; 95% CI = 3.002-6.947; P < 0.0001), and medical students with undisturbed of professional attitudes (OR = 4.280; 95% CI = 3.241-5.654; P < 0.0001) showed increased willingness to work on the COVID-19 frontline compared with their counterparts. Conclusions Medical students demonstrated a strong willingness to contribute to COVID-19 work during the pandemic in China. The findings may provide valuable information for emergency management so that policymakers can maintain sufficient health resources and provide quality health care in similar health emergencies in the future.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The significance of addressing public health emergencies (PHEs) emphasizes the pivotal role of a skilled nursing workforce in effective preparedness and response. However, there's a lack of comprehensive assessments tailored to nurses' core competencies, serving as a standard for ongoing education in preparedness. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to develop a psychometrically sound scale for identifying and measuring essential core competencies crucial for nurses during public health emergencies. DESIGN A multicenter cross-sectional study was conducted. SETTINGS Twelve tertiary hospitals in Shanghai. PARTICIPANTS Affiliated nurses with prior experience and significant exposure to public health emergencies were recruited. METHODS The study underwent development and validation in two stages, utilizing qualitative data analysis, a Delphi expert panel, and an empirical quantitative cross-sectional survey. The Nurses' Core Competencies for Public Health Emergencies (NCC-PHEs) scale and a demographic questionnaire were distributed between January 2023 and March 2023. Exploratory factor analysis, confirmatory factor analysis, Pearson correlations, and Cronbach's alpha analyses were employed to identify theoretical constructs, assess scale reliability, and establish validity. RESULTS Analysis was conducted on valid data collected from 1481 nurses. Factor analysis identified 47 professional nursing competencies arranged within a four-factor high-order model: prevention competencies (9 items), preparation competencies (7 items), response competencies (comprising basic and advanced levels) (26 items), and recovery competencies (5 items). Structural equation modelling confirmed satisfactory factor loadings and a good model fit, validating construct integrity. The reliability of the total scale was confirmed. CONCLUSION This study presents a valid scale that empirically measures nurses' core competencies crucial for preparedness and response during public health emergencies. The findings offer instrumental support for guiding the development of future courses and training programs in nursing research and practice.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The global nursing shortage was a well-known issue before the Covid-19 pandemic, but the Covid-19 pandemic has exacerbated the current nursing workforce shortage and reduced nursing retention. This systematic review aimed to explore factors affecting retention of nurses. METHODS The PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus and Proquest databases were searched for relevant primary studies published on nurses retention during Covid-19 pandemic. Finally, Google Scholar was searched for retrieving more related documents that may not be indexed in other searched databases. Inclusion criteria were research articles and gray literature related to nursing retention in Covid-19 pandemic, articles published in English, access to the full-texts, and without time limitation. Both qualitative and quantitative studies focusing on factors affecting the nurses retention were included. The Joanna Briggs Institute checklists were used for assessing quality of quantitative and qualitative studies. Qualitative and thematic content analysis methods based on Braun and Clark's model were used to analyze the data. RESULTS Eighteen studies were identified through a systematic search of the literature. The results showed that seven factors include personal, interpersonal, organizational, social media, educational, emotional, and protective factors are the factors affect the nurses retention. CONCLUSION The findings of this study showed that retention of nurse is complex and multi-factorial issue that factors from micro to macro-level affect it. Managers and health policy-makers based on the results obtained from this study can plan appropriate measures to increase the retention of nurses.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The theory of planned behavior is a conceptual framework of recent studies to identify and explain nurses' intentions to care for patients with emerging infectious diseases. However, correlations between behavioral intentions and variables that explain them have been inconsistent in previous studies. The influence of new variables might be considered in this case. This study aimed to determine moderating effects of ethical nursing competence on nurses' intention to care for COVID-19 patients in hospitals dedicated to infectious diseases based on the theory of planned behavior. METHODS A cross-sectional survey was conducted. Data on intention to care for COVID-19 patients, perceived behavioral control, attitude toward the behavior, subjective norm, and ethical nursing competence were obtained from 190 nurses in three hospitals dedicated to infectious diseases in South Korea. The moderating effect of ethical nursing competence was analyzed using model I of PROCESS Macro. ETHICAL CONSIDERATIONS This study was approved by the Institutional Review Board of Ulsan University Hospital, South Korea. Written informed consent was obtained from each subject. RESULTS The ethical nursing competence was a significant moderator in the relation between perceived behavioral control and the intention to care (B = 0.36, t = 2.16, p = 0.032). Ethical nursing competence did not have a significant interaction with attitude toward behavior or subjective norm. CONCLUSIONS This study showed that the higher the ethical nursing competence level, the greater the effect of perceived behavioral control on nurses' intention to care for COVID-19 patients. Promoting ethical nursing competence is necessary for nurses who would take care of patients at the frontline of the infectious disease pandemic. Nursing managers should include ethical nursing competence in the assessment of nurses' competence and design educational programs to enhance ethical nursing competence for efficient nursing staffing during a pandemic.

Abstract
AIM This study investigated the ways in which nurses caring for COVID-19 patients during the pandemic's early stages recognized professional growth through their experiences and continued working for several years, as well as the key experiences for identifying professional growth, external factors, and career intentions. METHODS We used a qualitative research method called the Trajectory Equifinality Model (TEM). The participants were nine nurses caring for COVID-19 patients during the pandemic's early stages and had already recognized professional growth through a series of experiences. We constructed a TEM diagram based on two interviews per participant (in February-March, and July-August 2022). RESULTS The process by which the participants recognized professional growth through a series of experiences was divided into Phases 1-4. The participants experienced adversity in Phases 1 and 3, and the following professional growth in Phases 2 and 4: gaining confidence as a nurse performing tasks of great social significance by acquiring the ability to fulfill my roles and realizing I could use the skills I had acquired by providing nursing care to COVID-19 patients in other situations, respectively. The key experiences for identifying professional growth as well as the inhibiting and facilitating factors of the process differed depending on the phase. The participants' career intention was wanting to continue to be involved in nursing by utilizing the skills and experience I have accumulated. CONCLUSION Managers and directors of nursing should provide appropriate support in each phase to help nurses recognize their professional growth during emerging epidemics.

Abstract
Objective The COVID-19 pandemic resulted in heightened stress for nurses and other healthcare workers, particularly during the initial phase of the crisis. Despite the adoption of various coping strategies, psychological distress persisted, affecting nurses' well-being and jeopardizing the overall resilience of the healthcare system. This study assessed the emotional response, perceived stressors, and coping strategies among nurses' staff who worked during the first wave of COVID-19 pandemic. Method A cross-sectional study was carried out among nurses who worked during the initial phase of the COVID-19 crisis (June - August 2020), at a tertiary care center in Western Saudi Arabia. The questionnaire explored five main sections. The first section (15 items) assessed emotions experienced during the initial wave of COVID-19, capturing both positive and negative sentiments, such as "joy" or "fear." The second section (20 items) examined the presence of stressors, like "lack of protective equipment" or "fear of infection." The third section (14 items) evaluated the perceived effectiveness of certain stress-reducing factors, including "peer support" or "training." In the fourth section (13 items), participants rated their usage frequency of various coping strategies, such as "meditation" or "seeking advice." Lastly, the fifth section assessed the hypothetical impact of 10 incentives, like "financial bonuses" or "additional training," in motivating nurses' involvement in future epidemic responses. The questionnaire was completed with demographic and professional data. A convenience sampling method was employed, and 315 nurses participated in the study. Descriptive statistics were carried out using SPSS version 24 for Windows (IBM Corp., Armonk, NY). Result The most commonly experienced emotion was a feeling of responsibility and ethical duty, reported by 97.5% of the participants, followed by nervousness and fear (83.8%), anger (73.3%), and stigma (70.2%). On the other hand, 86.7% were expecting a financial compensation. The most common stressors were related to the nurses' own safety, or the safety of their families and colleagues, reported by 92.4-95.2% of the participants. The perceived uncontrollability of COVID-19 was also a significant stressor. The improvement of the health status of infected colleagues (98.1%) or patients (97.5%) were the most common factors associated with the reduction in nurses' stress. Among the coping strategies, five were almost systematically deployed by the nurses (>95%), all consisting of cognitive and behavioral mechanisms to enhance own knowledge and safety and avoid being infected. The most crucial determinants for commitment in future pandemics are the availability of a cure or vaccine (93.3%), family support (91.4%), adequate personal protective equipment from the hospital (90.8%), and exemption from overtime (90.2%). Conclusion The first wave of COVID-19 exerted a tremendous psychological stress on nurses, due to concerns about safety, disease uncertainties, and social isolation. Analyzing these impacts offers insights for enhancing institutional and national crisis strategies, emphasizing staff safety and psychological well-being, especially for first responders like nurses. Policy implications include prioritizing mental health support and preparedness in future crisis plans. Additionally, ensuring continuous training and strategic workload management is crucial for maintaining frontline commitment.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Based on existing confusion and a suggested contradiction regarding empathy and compassion in relation to caring science as well as in clinical health care. AIM The aim of the study was to find a knowledge base for the development of clinical caring science for, empathy, sympathy altruism, and compassion and their mutual relationship. DESIGN A theoretical paper. RESULTS The text discusses the different concepts separately, considering their history, research, obstacles, and bias and then brings them together in a concept model. The conclusion shows that empathy, sympathy, and altruism have no contradictions. Instead, they together form an evident triad based on compassion. Compassion is a prerequisite and a basis for the others to work. In clinical application, empathy is metaphorically a quality coming from the head, sympathy from the heart and altruism from the hand, merged in an attitude of compassion as a motif to care. The paper also reflects on the possibilities to increase and develop a compassionate mood and capacity by education and training.

Abstract
Increased workload during the COVID-19 pandemic has threatened nurses' mental health. This study aimed to identify factors associated with job stress in COVID-19 nurses compared to other nurses. Nurses were recruited from four hospitals in Republic of Korea in November 2020. The general sociodemographic questionnaire, job stress, anxiety (GAD-7), and depression (PHQ-9) were used to conduct an online survey. Stepwise multiple regression analysis was used to identify the factors associated with job stress. A total of 290 participants were analyzed: 122 in the dedicated ward and 168 in the nondedicated ward nurse groups. Job stress, anxiety, and depression were higher in nurses dedicated to COVID-19 (4.19 ± 0.59, 5.98 ± 3.92, and 6.97 ± 4.47, respectively) than in the nondedicated group (3.92 ± 0.72 (p = 0.001), 4.98 ± 4.20 (p = 0.042), and 5.92 ± 4.36 (p = 0.047), respectively). Among COVID-19 nurses, job stress levels were higher in 30-39 year olds than in 20-29 year olds (3.71 ± 0.43 vs. 4.04 ± 0.54, p = 0.006) and in non-smokers compared with smokers (3.85 ± 0.49 vs. 3.38 ± 0.53, p = 0.24). Anxiety (β = 0.34, standard error (SE) = 0.01, p < 0.001) and clinical experience of 5-10 years (β = 0.23, SE = 0.10, p = 0.004) were associated with job stress. These findings can be applied when devising response strategies for infectious diseases and developing psychological and organizational intervention programs for alleviating job stress in nurses.

Abstract
Work alienation has a negative impact on nursing profession and may affect professional nursing development and willingness to learn during the era of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). The aim of this study was to explore the perceived levels of professional development, willingness to learn, and work alienation during this pandemic among nurses in Jordan. It also assessed the influence of work alienation and sociodemographic factors on readiness for professional development and willingness to learn. We used a cross-sectional correlation study design using the Arabic readiness for professional development and willingness to learn and work alienation scales among 328 nurses working in Jordan University Hospital, Amman-Jordan. Data were collected during the period of October and November 2021. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics (Mean ± Standard deviation), Pearson correlation coefficient (r), and regression analysis. The perceived levels of work alienation (3.12 ± 1.01) and readiness for professional development and willingness to learn (3.51 ± 0.43) among nurses were found to be at high levels during this era. Work alienation was negatively associated with readiness for professional development and willingness to learn (r = -0.54, p <0.001). The higher educational level of a nurse was found to be associated with a higher work alienation (r = -0.16, p = 0.008). Results indicated that work alienation had a direct influence on readiness for professional development and willingness to learn among nurses (R2 = 0.287, p < 0.001). Work alienation among nurses seems to be increased during the pandemic and it has reduced their readiness for professional development and willingness to learn. Nurse managers at hospitals must assess the perceived level of work alienation among nurses annually and design appropriate counseling interventions programs to reduce their work alienation and increase their willingness to learn.

Abstract
Nurses play a pivotal role in the delivery of medical services. Professional commitment is crucial for nursing professionals' long-term, healthy, and sustainable development. However, nursing students' professional commitment levels are currently unsatisfactory in China, especially given that the COVID-19 pandemic has posed unprecedented challenges to the profession. Therefore, studies investigating the professional commitment levels of nursing students and the underlying influencing factors are urgently required. This study explored how nursing students' risk perceptions, negative emotions, and psychological capital affected their professional commitment during the COVID-19 pandemic. A cross-sectional study was conducted among nursing students using risk perception, professional commitment, negative emotions, and psychological capital scales. An analysis of 1142 Chinese nursing students suggested that nursing students' risk perception positively impacted professional commitment and that negative emotions mediated this association. Importantly, psychological capital moderates the mediating effect of negative emotions and can buffer the negative emotions caused by risk perception. This study demonstrated that effective intervention strategies should be implemented in multiple dimensions such as education, individual, public and society to improve the professional commitment of nursing students.

Abstract
Background: Although healthcare workers (HCWs) in long-term care (LTC) have experienced significant emotional and psychological distress throughout the pandemic, little is known about their unique experiences. Objective: This scoping review synthesizes existing research on the experiences of HCWs in LTC during the COVID-19 pandemic. Method: Following Arksey and O'Malley's framework, data published between March 2020 to June 2022, were extracted from six databases. Results: Among 3808 articles screened, 40 articles were included in the final analysis. Analyses revealed three interrelated themes: carrying the load (moral distress); building pressure and burning out (emotional exhaustion); and working through it (a sense of duty to care). Conclusion: Given the impacts of the pandemic on both HCW wellbeing and patient care, every effort must be made to address the LTC workforce crisis and evaluate best practices for supporting HCWs experiencing mental health concerns during and post-COVID-19.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Climate change can negatively affect mental health, and poor mental health can negatively affect work. However, less is known about the relationship between mental health and workplace behaviours within the climate change context. AIMS To explore existing literature relating to climate-induced mental ill-health as a potential predictor of workplace behaviours. METHODS Scoping review, searching five databases for relevant literature using two separate search strategies. RESULTS Only five studies with any relevant data were found. Results could not be easily synthesized because each of the five considered different work-related outcomes. However, the available data suggest that the psychological impact of extreme events could lead to increased job tension, higher turnover intentions and workplace hostility. Stress about extreme weather could also impede the ability to make essential work-related decisions and, for those who work in the environmental sector, concerns about climate could lead to overcommitment to work. There was some evidence that social support might lessen the effects of climate-induced stress on work outcomes. CONCLUSIONS Very little literature considers the impacts of climate change on employees' mental health and associated workplace function. The available evidence suggests there are potential negative impacts which may be mitigated by social support. It is important for future research to explore ways of supporting staff and fostering resilience.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Previous studies have not fully reported the strength and independency of the correlation of nursing workforce to life expectancy. This study advances that nursing workforce is a major independent contributor to life expectancy at birth (LEB) globally and regionally. DESIGN A cross-sectional study was conducted at population level. SAMPLE Ecological data were extracted from the United Nations agencies for 215 populations. Each population is considered a research subject. MEASUREMENTS The correlation between nursing workforce and LEB was analyzed with scatter plots, bivariate correlation, partial correlation, and multiple linear regression analyses, Analysis of Variance post hoc and independent T-test. Economic affluence, urban lifestyle and obesity were included as the potential confounders in this study. INTERVENTION Not applicable RESULTS: Nursing workforce correlated to LEB and this relationship remained regardless of the competition of economic affluence, urbanization, and obesity. Second to economic affluence, nursing workforce showed the greatest influence on LEB. In total, 64.50% of LEB was explained in this study. Nursing workforce was a determinant of regional variations of LEB. CONCLUSIONS Nursing workforce may be a significant contributor to LEB globally and regionally. This contribution was independent of the potential confounding effects of economic affluence, urbanization, and obesity.

Abstract
During the COVID-19 pandemic, the quality of nursing care was a concern due to nurses' overwhelming workload. A cross-sectional design was conducted to compare perceptions between nurses and patients about the quality of nursing care for COVID-19 patients and to explore factors associated with these perceptions. Data were collected during the COVID-19 pandemic from 17 March to 13 April 2020 in five hospitals in Wuhan, China. Perceptions of care quality were assessed among nurses and patients using the Caring Behaviors Inventory. Nurses rated the quality of caring behaviors higher than patients. Both nurses and patients rated technical caring behaviors at high levels and rated the item related to "spending time with the patient" the lowest, while patients rated it much lower than nurses. Nurses' sex, participation in ethical training organized by the hospital, professional title, being invited to Wuhan, and length of working experience in years were significantly associated with nurses' self-evaluated caring behaviors. Moreover, inpatient setting and communication mode were significantly associated with patients' self-evaluated caring behaviors.

Abstract
AIM To explore nurses' perspectives on and experiences of safety-related organisational challenges during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak by Iranian nurses. BACKGROUND In different clinical contexts, nurses face numerous organisational challenges threatening their safety because of the COVID-19 pandemic. INTRODUCTION Exploring nurses' perceptions towards safety-oriented organisational challenges might inform nurse managers, healthcare managers, educators and policymakers on the priorities that should be considered to increase organisations' readiness and safety. METHODS This qualitative descriptive study is reported according to the Consolidated Criteria for Reporting Qualitative Research guidelines. Through purposeful sampling, 19 participants were involved. The research data were collected from March to August 2021 by conducting semi-structured interviews that were analysed through the content analysis approach. FINDINGS Three organisation-related safety challenges experienced were related to (1) human resource, (2) educational and (3) workforce protection issues. DISCUSSION Nurses experienced several safety issues related to the complexity faced by the health care organisations during the pandemic, exacerbated by previous frailties of the nursing system. CONCLUSION The three challenges that emerged might be considered a priority in building pandemic plans, transforming the experiences of nurses as a source of learning for all, capitalising on their suggestions and rendering healthcare facilities ready to deal safely with future crises. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING AND HEALTH POLICY Adopting appropriate measures to decrease human resource issues and that related to education, and promoting workforce health protection, are both recommended to improve nurses' work environment and satisfy their safety needs.

Abstract
AIM(S) This study aims to investigate care unit managers' perceptions of how the COVID-19 pandemic influenced their ability to support the nurses. BACKGROUND The COVID-19 pandemic placed extreme pressure on health care organizations. More knowledge regarding how the pandemic influenced care unit managers' ability to support nurses is central to ensuring high-quality health care in future crises. METHOD(S) A mixed-methods study in Swedish hospitals with a survey (n = 128) and interviews (n = 20) with care unit managers. RESULTS Approximately half of the managers reported having spent more time available to and supporting the nurses. Availability was positively predicted by their perceived organizational support while negatively by their job demands. These job demands concerned meeting staff anxiety and managing organizational restructuring. Full focus on direct patient care and strong professional and social support were important job resources. CONCLUSION(S) For care unit managers to effectively support the nurses during a crisis, they need proficient job resources and moderate job demands. Managers' perceived organizational support positively affects the quality of their crisis leadership. Creating arenas in which staff collegiality can form and develop is beneficial for the ability to meet future crises. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING MANAGEMENT This study specifies important job resources that should be acknowledged and reinforced to strengthen the ability of care unit managers to actively support the nurses during a crisis.

Abstract
Introduction
Public health responses were triggered while COVID-19 was spreading. China redeployed healthcare workers to serve the most vulnerable populations and communities in the initial epicentre—Wuhan. However, it is not known how redeployment processes impacted on healthcare workers in a pandemic crisis.
Aims
To explore the experiences and needs of frontline healthcare workers who were redeployed to care for COVID-19 patients in Wuhan, China, and understand the long-term impacts of the redeployment experience on their work and life.
Methods
A qualitative study was conducted with redeployed healthcare workers using semi-structured interviews and thematic analysis. This study is reported in accordance with the consolidated criteria for reporting qualitative research (COREQ) guidelines.
Findings
A total of 20 redeployed healthcare workers (13 nurses and seven physicians) participated, and four themes were generated: (1) Initial feelings and emotions of redeployment—Participants experienced worries and concerns, a sense of isolation and loneliness on their arrival to the epicentre. (2) ‘It is like a war zone’—Healthcare workers faced a range of risks and challenges of caring for COVID-19 patients in Wuhan in the context of resource strain. (3) Uncertainty and coping strategies in patient care—Despite the hardships experienced, participants continued to deliver high-quality patient care including psychological care and palliative care, good communication and building mutual trusting relationships. (4) Reflection and far-reaching impacts of caring for COVID-19 patients—Participants felt motivated and encouraged as efforts were recognised by the government and wider society.
Conclusions
Redeployed healthcare workers shared their unique needs and experiences of coping with redeployment and challenges they faced in the context of resource strain, which has significant implications for policy and future practice. The reality of a pandemic may reduce healthcare workers’ willingness to work due to various reasons including inadequate preparedness of facilities and workplace safety. It is important to support frontline healthcare workers in order to maintain an adequate healthcare workforce in pandemic crises. Continuously evolving pandemic circumstances and uncertainty highlight the importance of an organized national pandemic response plan for subsequent waves of COVID-19 and future pandemics.

Abstract
The identification of the factors underlying the willingness or lack thereof to respond to public health emergencies is paramount to informing more capable health services. The interest in this topic appears renewed with each surge of threat, either referring to natural disasters, man-made violence, or epidemic and pandemics. However, there is no systematic approach to the research patterns and related main findings concerning individual and contextual determinants. The present article contributes to this theme through a systematic literature review of a sample of 150 articles published in the last 30 years on the subject of willingness and preparedness of health professionals to deal with public health threats. Our findings show that the research is mainly phenomena and contextual driven, responding to whichever emergency threat is more salient in a given period. Geographically, research on this topic is led by USA and China, mostly solely, while European countries invest in collaborations that are more international. Universities, including health institutes and schools, and researchers at hospitals conduct most of the research on the topic. The main research areas are medicine, psychology, and psychiatry. Pandemics, including COVID-19, influenza, and natural disasters, are the phenomena gauging more attention as opposed to terrorism events and biological accidents. The specific role of health professionals within the institution, their belief in ethical duties, preparation training, and concerns regarding infection of self and family are the main variables influencing the willingness and ability to report to work in public health emergencies.

Abstract
The aim of this research was to analyze how the need for psychological support of health workers (HCWs) influenced the beliefs, perceptions and attitudes towards their work during the COVID-19 pandemic and to predict the need of psychological assistance. A descriptive transversal study was conducted based on a self-administered questionnaire distributed to health professionals working in the Canary Islands, Spain. The data were analyzed using Pearson's chi-squared test and the linear trend test. The correlation test between ordinal and frequency variables was applied using Kendall's Tau B. Multiple logistic regression was used to predict dichotomous variables. The sample included 783 health professionals: 17.8% (n = 139) of them needed psychological or psychiatric support. Being redeployed to other services influenced the predisposition to request psychological help, and HCWs who required psychological support had more negative attitudes and perceptions towards their work. After five waves of COVID-19, these HCWs reported to be physically, psychologically and emotionally exhausted or even "burned out"; they did not feel supported by their institutions. The commitment of health personnel to fight against the COVID-19 pandemic decreased after the five waves, especially among professionals who required psychological support.

Abstract
AIM To describe the experiences of registered nurses working in a US healthcare system during the COVID-19 pandemic. DESIGN This qualitative thematic analysis study is a secondary analysis of stories submitted by nurses to a repository established by the parent study. METHODS Registered nurses working in various roles in a healthcare system submitted stories (N = 45) to open-ended prompts via an online repository between June 2020 and February 2021. A team of three nurse scientists coded the stories using Dedoose software. Initial codes were then reviewed by the team to synthesize initial coding into themes. The COREQ checklist was used to ensure research reporting guidelines were met. RESULTS Thematic analysis revealed three themes in a global theme of COVID-19 pandemic-related personal and professional evolution: (1) The art and science of pandemic nursing, (2) Persisting despite challenges; and (3) Learning as we went. Each of the three organizing themes were supported by basic themes. CONCLUSIONS Identified themes affirm some of nursing's long-standing core values, such as the central role of human connectedness in restoring health, but findings also reflect new evolutionary processes of moral identity formation that occurred among nurses and the nursing profession during the COVID-19 pandemic. IMPACT Findings from this study describe the processes by which nurses' moral identity evolved during a segment of the COVID-19 pandemic. Collectively, these evolutions represent important shifts in the nursing profession. Using findings from this study, nurse educators, nurse managers and healthcare administrators will be able to implement effective, sustainable policies and processes that meet the needs of both the community and the workforce. NO PATIENT OR PUBLIC CONTRIBUTION This study was designed to capture the experiences of nurses employed by one healthcare organization. However, it was not conducted using input or suggestions from the public or the patient population served by the organization.

Abstract
Background: In modern healthcare, the role of solidarity, altruism and the
natural response to moral challenges in life-threatening situations is still rather
unexplored. The COVID-19 pandemic provided an opportunity to obtain a deeper understanding
of nurses’ willingness to care for patients during crisis. Objective: To elucidate clinical expressions of ontological situational
ethics through nurses’ willingness to work during a pandemic. Research design, participants and context: A qualitative study with an
interpretive design was applied. Twenty nurses who worked in intensive care unit at two
Swedish hospitals during the first, second, and third waves of the COVID-19 pandemic were
interviewed. The analysis was interpretative and applied a theoretical ethics
perspective. Ethical considerations: The study was approved by the Swedish Ethical Review
Authority and informed consent was obtained from all participants. Findings: From a philosophical perspective, the nurses expressed sovereign
life expressions of mercy and compassion, which arose spontaneously in response to seeing
vulnerable fellow humans. They referenced ‘‘the nurse inside me’’ and their choice of
profession as motives to provide care. Ontological situational ethics in culture and norms
were noted in the constructs of competence, responsibility, solidarity with colleagues and
organization; and interest and learning were driving forces. Ethical demand was evident
when nurses expressed ideas of meaningfulness in helping their fellow humans; but themes
of ambiguity, exhaustion and unwillingness were also present. Conclusions: The nurses showed a high willingness to care for patients
during a crisis. Responding to the ethical demand and to care for vulnerable human beings
while risking their own health and lives could be interpreted as an inter-human vocation.
These spontaneous altruistic actions saved the lives of many patients during the pandemic
and need to be understood and supported

Abstract
AIM To identify groups of nurses engaging in coronavirus disease (COVID-19) care who are most in need of organizational support. BACKGROUND Overwhelming stress and susceptibility to burn-out have been reported in nurses during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS Nurses working at five hospitals which accepted COVID-19 patients answered the questionnaire. The Tokyo Metropolitan Distress Scale for Pandemic, Self-Diagnosis Check List for Assessment of Workers' Accumulated Fatigue, and Japanese Burnout Scale were evaluated. Multiple regression analysis was performed to examine the relationship between engaging in COVID-19 care and psychosocial/physical burden. RESULTS In total, 895 questionnaires were analyzed. With experience in caring for COVID-19 patients as the independent variable, nurses caring for suspected cases had significantly higher standardized Tokyo Metropolitan Distress Scale for Pandemic scores for "concerns for infection" (standardized partial regression coefficient β = 0.921, P = 0.004), Assessment of Workers' Accumulated Fatigue (β = 0.445, P = 0.022), and Japanese Burnout Scale "emotional exhaustion" (β = 0.136, P = 0.021) than those caring for confirmed cases. CONCLUSIONS Nurses caring for suspected COVID-19 patients have the highest psychological/physical burden and propensity for burnout. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING MANAGEMENT Extensive support systems are required for nurses caring for confirmed and suspected COVID-19 cases.

Abstract
Aim To explore junior nurses' and final‐year student nurses' intention to care for COVID‐19 patients amidst the Delta COVID‐19 variant outbreak in China using the theory of planned behaviour (TPB) as a framework. Background The COVID‐19 pandemic has intensified global nursing shortage. Junior nurses and final‐year student nurses represent the backbone of the future frontline nursing workforce. The TPB is a valid theoretical model for predicting nurses' caring behaviours. Methods A 47‐item self‐administered questionnaire was disseminated online to a convenience sample of 547 junior nurses and final‐year student nurses located in 13 regions across mainland China. Results Approximately 63.4% of the participants intended to care for COVID‐19 patients voluntarily and 65.6% by non‐voluntary assignment. The TPB model significantly predicted 45% of the variance in behavioural intention, subjective norms being the strongest predictor. Gender, vaccination status and ethical perceptions regarding frontline work significantly correlated with the intention to provide care. Conclusions Our findings highlight the importance of social, organisational and family support underpinning future junior nurses' professional commitment in times of public health crisis. Implications for nursing management Pandemic‐tailored workplace training programmes for nurses/student nurses that emphasize on self‐care and ethical issue discussions are warranted. Hospital managers should collaborate with community partners to offer additional family support for nurses in need.

Abstract
The cornerstone of any successful organizations is the frontline employees. Frontline employees (FLEs) are always in action at the frontline of the business. They do not operate from the office space or from the corporate setting. Frontline employees directly interact with their customers. During the COVID-19 pandemic, many frontline employees experienced numerous challenges as most of the places there were full or partial lockdown imposed by the government agencies and the frontline employees could not be able to directly connect with their customers. Not many studies are there which investigated the issue of resource integration, dynamic capabilities, and engineering management abilities of the frontline employees such as technological capability, emotional intelligence, and psychological capability which perceived to influence the frontline employee adaptability and organization performance. In this background, the purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between frontline employee adaptability and organization performance during COVID-19 pandemic from technological, emotional, and psychological perspectives. With the help of dynamic capability view and different adaptability theories, a theoretical model has been developed conceptually. Later the conceptual model has been validated using partial least square - structural equation modeling technique considering 412 respondents from frontline employees of different organizations in Asia and EMEA. The study found that frontline employees' dynamic capabilities and engineering management abilities significantly and positively impact employee adaptability which in turn impact the performance of the organization mediating through employee job satisfaction and employee performance.

Abstract
Aim To explore the occupational and personal life dimensions that have been impacted by the COVID‐19 pandemic for registered nurses (RN) and licensed practical nurses (LPN). Design Qualitative interpretive description approach. Methods Between July and September 2020, a web‐based cross‐sectional study was conducted among RNs and LPNs in Quebec, Canada. Included in this survey was an open‐ended question allowing nurses to describe the occupational and personal life dimensions that were impacted by the COVID‐19 pandemic. Thematic analysis was used to interpret the qualitative data from this open‐ended question. Reporting followed the Standards For Reporting Qualitative Research (SRQR). Results Of the 1860 survey respondents, 774 RNs and 43 LPNs responded to the open‐ended question (total n = 819). For the occupational dimension, six themes were identified: impacts of infection control on work, change in daily work tasks, offloading and reorganization of care, deterioration of working conditions, increased stress at work and issues related to the profession. For the personal dimension, four themes were found: impacts on the family, dealing with changes about leisure and personal life, impacts on physical and psychological health. Conclusion Knowing the dimensions affected by the COVID‐19 pandemic could help to identifying appropriate interventions to support RNs and LPNs. Impact The COVID‐19 pandemic has significantly impacted the occupational and personal lives RNs and LPNs working in the Quebec healthcare system. More specifically, Quebec's nurses experienced a major reorganization of care generated by important government decisions. Knowing how the pandemic affected different life dimensions will help in the development of support adapted to nurses' realities. Even in a pandemic context, improvements in the work environment or appropriate support could lead to an improved psychological health for nurses.

Abstract
(1) Background: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has spread rapidly worldwide. Uniformed nurses have played a critical role during the COVID-19 pandemic in the Philippines; however, uptake of literature is limited. This study assessed the relationship between quality of nursing work life (QNWL) and nurses’ attitudes and practices during the COVID-19 pandemic. (2) Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional design was used. Participants were recruited from four government hospitals in the Manila metropolitan area of the Philippines. Participants completed three questionnaires in an online survey: a demographic questionnaire, a QNWL questionnaire, and the attitude and practices toward COVID-19 questionnaire. Descriptive statistics, an independent t-test, a one-way analysis of variance, the Pearson correlation coefficient, and hierarchical linear regression were applied for data analysis. (3) Results: The mean age of the participants was 29 years. Most of the participants were single women who were not certified in their specialties. A total of QNWL scores were high, indicating that the participants displayed favorable attitudes and practices in relation to COVID-19. A statistically significant relationship was observed between QNWL, specialty certification, and practices related to COVID-19. Practices related to COVID-19 were a significant predictor of QNWL and one of its subscales, work design. (4) Conclusion: Young adult uniformed nurses in the Philippines have assumed numerous responsibilities during the COVID-19 pandemic. Providing these frontline nurses with comprehensive specialized education and training is crucial.
