Global publication productivity in dermatology: a bibliometric description of the past and estimation of the future

Bibliometric Study of the Advances Made in Clinical Dermatological Research in Spain from 2015 through 2021: Update of the MaIND Project and Interactive Online Map

INTRODUCTION

A clinical dermatological research was conducted in Spain from 2005 through 2014 as part of the MaIND project with the provinces or centers with the highest number of published articles. However, a low level of evidence in scientific production was confirmed as the overall result. The aim of this study is to update the Spanish clinical dermatological research in bibliometric terms from 2015 through 2021 with comparisons between both periods of time.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

We conducted a bibliometric study to replicate the methodology used in the article to be updated. We included articles whose corresponding authors' affiliation was a Spanish dermatological center, which met the criteria for clinical research in dermatology, including a level of evidence ≤4.

RESULTS

A total of 1,674 out of the 10,199 articles met the inclusion criteria. An interactive map representing quantitative and qualitative indicators calculated for the 2005-2021 is presented here. In the study period, we found an increasing trend both in the number of published articles (P<.002) and in the mean number of citation-years per article (P<.01). A total of 22 of the articles had a level of evidence >4, with a positive trend towards more articles having a higher level of evidence (P<.03). ACTAS DERMOSIFILOGRÁFICAS still maintains its position as the journal with the highest number of articles received (18%, a total of 302 articles).

CONCLUSIONS

The results of this study show that, in Spain, the scientific production of dermatology represents an upward trend in quantity, impact, and level of evidence.

Research hotspots in urticaria: A bibliometric study of the top 100 most cited articles

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE

Urticaria is a prevalent recurrent skin allergic condition. Severe itching significantly impacts patients' quality of life. This paper aims to investigate the development status of urticaria through bibliometric analysis to predict future research hotspots and trends.

METHODS

On October 29, 2023, a literature search was conducted in the Web of Science (WOS) database to collect urticaria-related publications. The top 100 most cited articles were charted, and VOSviewer software was utilized for the literature data analysis. A visual analysis was performed on the number of articles, journals, main researchers, keywords, and so on.

RESULTS

The research involved 415 authors from 28 countries, published across 25 journals, ranging from 1963 to 2023. Marcus Maurer was the leading author, with the United States being the foremost country in urticaria research. CEH Grattan received the most citations, and The Medical University of South Carolina had the highest number of publications. Key research focuses include epidemiology, pathogenesis, drug therapy, and quality of life assessments. "Anti-high affinity IgE receptor α chain (FcεRIα)," "chronic idiopathic urticaria," "autoantibodies," "histamine-release" emerged as the keywords with the highest prominence.

CONCLUSION

The field of urticaria research has attracted substantial attention over the past few decades, witnessing rapid development. This study highlighted the top 100 articles by citation frequency within the urticaria field. Bibliometric analysis revealed a shift in treatment methods from traditional antihistamines to biological agents, with significant emphasis on improving the quality of life in chronic urticaria management. These areas represent the current research focal points and indicate future trends in urticaria research.

Trends and Hotspots in Global Radiomics Research: A Bibliometric Analysis

Objectives: The purpose of this research is to summarize the structure of radiomics-based knowledge and to explore potential trends and priorities by using bibliometric analysis. Methods: Select radiomics-related publications from 2012 to October 2022 from the Science Core Collection Web site. Use VOSviewer (version 1.6.18), CiteSpace (version 6.1.3), Tableau (version 2022), Microsoft Excel and Rstudio's free online platforms (http://bibliometric.com) for co-writing, co-citing, and co-occurrence analysis of countries, institutions, authors, references, and keywords in the field. The visual analysis is also carried out on it. Results: The study included 6428 articles. Since 2012, there has been an increase in research papers based on radiomics. Judging by publications, China has made the largest contribution in this area. We identify the most productive institutions and authors as Fudan University and Tianjie. The top three magazines with the most publications are《FRONTIERS IN ONCOLOGY》, 《EUROPEAN RADIOLOGY》, and 《CANCERS》. According to the results of reference and keyword analysis, "deep learning, nomogram, ultrasound, f-18-fdg, machine learning, covid-19, radiogenomics" has been determined as the main research direction in the future. Conclusion: Radiomics is in a phase of vigorous development with broad prospects. Cross-border cooperation between countries and institutions should be strengthened in the future. It can be predicted that the development of deep learning-based models and multimodal fusion models will be the focus of future research. Advances in knowledge: This study explores the current state of research and hot spots in the field of radiomics from multiple perspectives, comprehensively, and objectively reflecting the evolving trends in imaging-related research and providing a reference for future research.

Global Scientific Overview of Dermatology Related to COVID-19: A Bibliometric Analysis

Background

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has had a significant impact on dermatology, but to date no bibliometric analysis of this field has been identified. Therefore, the aim of this study was to perform a bibliometric indicator analysis of the worldwide scientific production of COVID-19 in dermatology.

Materials and Methods

An advanced bibliographic search was performed in the Scopus database to identify articles on COVID-19 and dermatology from 2020 to 2021. The collected information was analysed with SciVal software. Bibliometric data were described through figures and summary tables.

Results

A total of 1448 documents were collected and analysed. Torello Lotti was the author with the greatest scientific production; however, Esther Freeman had the greatest impact. Harvard University was the institution with the highest number of published articles. Most papers were published in the first quartiles. The United States and Italy were the leading countries in terms of production. Articles with international collaboration had the highest impact.

Conclusion

Articles related to dermatology and COVID-19 are mostly published with American and Italian affiliations. In addition, there has been an increase in the distribution of articles published in the first quartile, which would reflect a growing interest in the community. Publications with international collaboration reported the highest impact, so future authors should take this into account.

Immunological factors in cirrhosis diseases from a bibliometric point of view

BACKGROUND

Cirrhosis results from persistent liver injury that leads to liver fibrosis. Immunological factors play important regulatory roles in the development and progression of cirrhosis. Bibliometrics is one of the most commonly used methods for systematic evaluation of a field of study. To date, there are no bibliometric studies on the role of immunological factors in cirrhosis.

AIM

To provide a comprehensive overview of the knowledge structure and research hotspots of immunological factors in cirrhosis.

METHODS

We retrieved publications related to immunological factors in cirrhosis between 2003 to 2022 from the Web of Science Core Collection database on December 7, 2022. The search strategy was TS = ((Liver Cirrhosis OR hepatic cirrhosis OR liver fibrosis) AND (Immunologic* Factor* OR Immune Factor* OR Immunomodulator* OR Biological Response Modifier* OR Biomodulator*)). Only original articles and reviews were included. A total of 2873 publications were analyzed using indicators of publication and citation metrics, countries, institutes, authors, journals, references, and keywords by CiteSpace and VOSviewer.

RESULTS

A total of 5104 authors from 1173 institutions across 51 countries published 2873 papers on cirrhosis and immunological factors in 281 journals. In the past 20 years, the increasing number of related annual publications and citations indicates that research on immunological factors in cirrhosis has become the focus of attention and has entered a period of accelerated development. The United States (781/27.18%), China (538/18.73%), and Germany (300/10.44%) were the leading countries in this field. Most of the top 10 authors were from the United States (4) and Germany (3), with Gershwin ME contributing the most related articles (42). World Journal of Gastroenterology was the most productive journal, whereas Hepatology was the most co-cited journal. Current research hotspots regarding immunological factors in cirrhosis include fibrosis, cirrhosis, inflammation, liver fibrosis, expression, hepatocellular carcinoma, activation, primary biliary cirrhosis, disease, and hepatic stellate cells. Burst keywords (e.g., epidemiology, gut microbiota, and pathways) represent research frontiers that have attracted the interest of researchers in recent years.

CONCLUSION

This bibliometric study comprehensively summarizes the research developments and directions of immunological factors in cirrhosis, providing new ideas for promoting scientific research and clinical applications.

Academic dermatology in Australia and New Zealand between 2017 and 2022: A cross‐sectional bibliometric analysis

INTRODUCTION

Academic dermatologists in Australia and New Zealand provide high-quality and meaningful contributions to the understanding of disease and therapeutic translational research. Concerns have been raised by the Australian Medical Association regarding the decline of clinical academics in Australia as a whole, however, such trends in scholarly output have not previously been analysed for Australasian dermatologists.

METHODS

A bibliometric analysis of dermatologists in Australia and New Zealand was conducted in January and February 2023. Available Scopus profiles for all dermatologists were used to measure lifetime H index, scholarly output, citation counts and field-weighted citation impact (FWCI) in the last 5 years (2017-2022). Trends in output over time were measured using non-parametric tests. Differences in output between subgroups stratified by gender and academic leadership positions (associate professor or professor) were measured using Wilcoxon rank-sum and one-way ANOVA tests. The scholarly output of recent College graduates was also analysed as a subgroup, comparing the same bibliographic variables in the 5 years preceding and 5 years following awarding of their fellowships.

RESULTS

From the 463 practising dermatologists in Australia and New Zealand, 372 (80%) were successfully matched to Scopus researcher profiles. Of these dermatologists, 167 were male (45%) and 205 (55%) were female, and 31 (8%) held academic leadership positions. Most dermatologists (67%) published at least one paper in the last 5 years. The median lifetime H index was 4, and between 2017 and 2022 median scholarly output was 3, the median citations were 14 and the median FWCI was 0.64. There was a non-significant trend towards fewer publications per year, however, citation count and FWCI decreased significantly. By subgroups, female dermatologists published significantly more papers between 2017 and 2022, and other bibliographic variables were comparable to male dermatologists. However, women were underrepresented in positions of academic leadership-comprising only 32% of this cohort despite representing 55% of dermatologists. Professors were also significantly more likely to have higher bibliographic outcomes than associate professors. Finally, analysis of recent College graduates highlighted a significant decline in bibliometric outcomes pre- and post-fellowship.

CONCLUSION

Overall, our analysis identifies a trend towards decreased research output by dermatologists in Australia and New Zealand in the last 5 years. Strategies to support dermatologists in research endeavours, particularly women and recent graduates, will be essential in maintaining strong scholarly output among Australasian dermatologists and thereby sustaining optimal evidence-based patient care.

Citation analysis of the 100 top-cited articles on the topic of hidradenitis suppurativa since 2013 using Sankey diagrams: Bibliometric analysis

BACKGROUND

Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic, inflammatory and debilitating dermatosis characterized by painful nodules, sinus tracts and abscesses in apocrine gland-bearing areas that predominantly affect women worldwide. New therapeutic interventions based on the clinical manifestations of patients have recently been introduced in numerous articles. However, which countries, journals, subject categories, and articles have the ultimate influence remain unknown. This study aimed to display influential entities in 100 top-cited HS-related articles (T100HS) and investigate whether medical subject headings (i.e., MeSH terms) can be used to predict article citations.

METHODS

T100HS data were extracted from PubMed since 2013. Subject categories were classified by MeSH terms using social network analysis. Sankey diagrams were applied to highlight the top 10 influential entities in T100HS from the three aspects of publication, citations, and the composited score using the hT index. The difference in article citations across subject categories and the predictive power of MeSH terms on article citations in T100HS were examined using one-way analysis of variance and regression analysis.

RESULTS

The top three countries (the US, Italy, and Spain) accounts for 54% of the T100HS. The T100HS impact factor (IF) is 12.49 (IF = citations/100). Most articles were published in J Am Acad Dermatol (15%; IF = 18.07). Eight subject categories were used. The "methods" was the most frequent MeSH term, followed by "surgery" and "therapeutic use". Saunte et al, from Roskilde Hospital, Denmark, had 149 citations in PubMed for the most cited articles. Sankey diagrams were used to depict the network characteristics of the T100HS. Article citations did not differ by subject category (F(7, 92) = 1.97, P = .067). MeSH terms were evident in the number of article citations predicted (F(1, 98) = 129.1106; P < .001).

CONCLUSION

We achieved a breakthrough by displaying the characteristics of the T100HS network on the Sankey diagrams. MeSH terms may be used to classify articles into subject categories and predict T100HS citations. Future studies can apply the Sankey diagram to the bibliometrics of the 100 most-cited articles.

Research status and hot topics of the effects of skin innervation on wound healing from 1959 to 2022: A bibliometric analysis

Background

Skin innervation plays an important role in wound healing by either direct contact with or indirect secretions that impact skin cells. Many studies in this field have been published; however, there is a lack of bibliometric analyses focusing on the effect of skin innervation on skin wound healing. In this study, we aimed to analyse the research trends, status, and hotspots in this field.

Methods

Reviews and articles published in English were extracted from the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) database based on subject term searches. Microsoft Office Excel, VOSviewer, and CiteSpace were used to analyse publication date, country or region, institution, author, and author keywords.

Results

A total of 368 papers published between 1959 and 2022 were included in the analysis. Although there was a pulsation during this period, there was an overall upward trend in studies related to the effect of skin innervation on wound healing. The United States, particularly the University of Washington, and Gibran, Nicole S. from the University of Washington, was the most active in this field. Wound Repair and Regeneration published the most relevant literature, and “Calcitonin gene-related peptide: physiology and pathophysiology” had the highest total number of citations. “Diabetic foot ulcer,” “epidermal stem cells,” “mesenchymal stem cells,” and “mast cells” are current and potential future research hotspots.

Conclusion

This bibliometric analysis will inform the overall trends in research related to the effect of skin innervation on wound healing, summarise relevant research hotspots, and guide future work.

Participation in Clinical Trials Among Academic Dermatologists Affiliated With Veterans Affairs Hospitals: Survey Study

Background

Clinical trials have led to the development of new and effective therapies for many dermatologic conditions. To our knowledge, there is no published study that has quantified and described the degree of involvement in clinical trials among academic dermatologists and their university affiliates.

Objective

The purpose of this study was to characterize the involvement of academic dermatology departments in clinical trials research.

Methods

An online survey was sent to 211 Veterans Affairs (VA)–employed dermatologists. It comprised 20 questions related to the number of clinical trials, support staff dedicated to clinical research, skin diseases studied, and the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on conducting clinical research. Three rounds of survey invitations were sent over a 3-month period (March to May 2021). Data from all survey responses were reviewed for quantitative and descriptive analyses of the key outcome measures.

Results

A total of 48 dermatologists completed the survey and provided their university affiliations and details of involvement in clinical trials research. Over half of participants (n=25, 58.1%) with a university affiliate reported that their affiliated dermatology department had a dedicated clinical trials unit. Basal cell carcinoma was the most frequently studied skin condition (n=9, 18.8%), followed by atopic dermatitis and psoriasis (n=4, 8.3% each); 66.7% of participants reported no current clinical trials participation. Of those conducting clinical trials, 87% (n=18) noted that COVID-19 was a barrier to conducting trials, with 52.2% (n=11) citing disrupted or decreased trials due to the pandemic.

Conclusions

Although many dermatologists with university affiliations reported having a dedicated clinical trials unit at their institution, a majority of those surveyed reported not taking part in any active trials. Overall, the diseases investigated in academic clinical trials appear to follow national trends, though some of the top dermatological diseases are underrepresented in clinical trials research. A key limitation of our study was the low response rate (~23%) and that the survey responses from the sample of VA-based dermatologists may not be generalizable to all academic dermatology departments in the United States. The effect of the COVID-19 pandemic appeared to play a significant role in disrupting active trials.

Global Trends and Hotspots in Esketamine Research: A Bibliometric Analysis of Past and Estimation of Future Trends

Background

Being the S-enantiomer of racemic ketamine, esketamine is found to be effective for sedation, analgesia, and treating depression. However, there is no comprehensive bibliometric analysis about esketamine research. In this study, we aimed to determine the scientific output and emerging topics related to esketamine.

Methods

Esketamine-related articles and reviews that published between 2000 and 2020 were obtained from the Web of Science Core Collection database, using key word search of “esketamine” “esketamine hydrochloride”, “s-ketamine”, “S(+)-ketamine”, “(S)-ketamine”, or “(–)-ketamine”. Various bibliographic elements were collected, including the annual number of publications, citation frequency, countries/regions, institutions, authors, journals, and keywords. Two sorts of scientometric software, namely VOS viewer and CiteSpace, were used to conduct bibliometric and knowledge-map analyses.

Results

A total of 683 publications were included in the current study. We found the number of publications in esketamine research field had increased annually since 2016. The United States was the leader in this field, with the highest publications number (162, 23.72%), total citations (3504/9713, 36.08%) and H-index (40). The most productive institution was Chiba University in Japan, and esketamine-related papers were mainly published in the journal Anesthesia & Analgesia. The keyword co-occurrence analysis showed that keywords relevant to depression were the most frequent. Moreover, all identified keywords could be divided into four clusters, with the research focus gradually shifting from cluster of “anesthesia and analgesia detection” to “depression treatment effect.”.

Conclusion

The past two decades have shown a marked increase in esketamine research. The United States maintained a top position worldwide, making the most significant contributions in the field of esketamine research. The contributions and collaborations of Asian countries have continuously increased and is a strong area of growth as well as development in recent years. Additionally, the emerging hotspots of esketamine research concentrate on clarifying its depression treatment effect.

A Bibliometric Analysis of Atopic Dermatitis Research over the Past Three Decades and Future Perspectives

Atopic dermatitis (AD) has been increasing in prevalence over the past few decades; however, AD has never been analyzed using a bibliometric approach. We searched for AD studies in the dermatology and allergy category of the Web of Science and SCOPUS databases using the keywords "atopic dermatitis", "eczema", and "atopy". In total, 53,460 documents were retrieved. We analyzed annual publication trends and performed keyword and co-authorship network analyses. The annual number of AD publications has increased over the years. Asthma, food allergies, the skin barrier, IgE, and epidemiology have received extensive attention. The keywords 'allergic rhinitis', 'child(ren)', 'quality of life', and 'probiotics' have become more commonly used in recent years. AD research has been led by only a few countries, such as the USA, Germany, and the UK, and longstanding research topics such as asthma, allergy, and the immune system continue to be important. We suggest that global collaborations, research in developing countries, and research that is more holistic (thus exploring how genes, the immune system, the environment, and the microbiome together impact AD) are necessary.

The Assessment of Dermatology Clinical Research in Saudi Arabia

Objectives: To determine the level of evidence in dermatology research over the last five years and to assess the frequency of publication in different journals in the field of dermatology in the kingdom of Saudi Arabia, western region.

Methods: All published research were reviewed during the period of 2015 till 2020 using online research database through PubMed, Embase, and Google Scholar. A list of all Saudi dermatologists who are registered by the Saudi Commission for Health Specialties as consultants, and who worked in public institutions at Jeddah and Makkah was retrieved. The Oxford Level of Evidence Scale was utilized to determine the level of evidence of these studies. Descriptive statistics were used to determine the frequency of different study types and levels of evidence.

Results: A total of 125 articles were published in 62 different national and international journals. Majority of the published studies were level IV (76%). Case reports were the most common type of published research (56%) and meta-analysis studies accounted for (6.4%). Thirty-two articles were produced by academic institutions, compared to 68 published articles from governmental institutions, and 22 from military hospitals.

Conclusion: Only a small percentage of publications in Saudi Arabia are considered high level clinical research. The number of publications during the past five years was high compared to the previous years and case reports constituted the majority. Authors should be encouraged to conduct higher-level studies to enhance patient care.
