Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aimed to assess whether awake bruxism and masticatory muscle activity could be related to external root resorption (ERR) in second molars adjacent to impacted mandibular third molars. MATERIALS AND METHODS Sixty patients, with requests for a cone-beam, computed tomography, were divided into two groups: ERR (patients with ERR in the second molar, n = 30), and control group (n = 30). Awake bruxism was assessed through the Oral Behaviors Checklist (OBC) and an ecological momentary assessment (EMA). Surface electromyography (EMG) was used to assess the masseter and anterior temporal muscle function. Normality and homogeneity of variances were demonstrated. Descriptive analysis was performed, using the T-test and Chi-square test to compare the characteristics of the groups. A multiple regression model was performed. RESULTS The ERR group presented more non-functional oral activities related to awake bruxism than the control group, according to OBC (p = 0.027) and EMA (p = 0.035). In addition, the ERR group had higher EMG activity than the control group in rest and isotonic protocols (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Awake bruxism and greater masticatory muscle activity seem to be related to the presence of ERR in second molars adjacent to impacted mandibular third molars. CLINICAL RELEVANCE The results of the present study can reinforce the theory that triggering ERR in the second molars adjacent to impacted mandibular third molars may be related to mechanical forces coming from the masticatory function.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to investigate the validity and reliability of the Turkish version of the Oral Behavior Checklist (OBC-TR). MATERIALS AND METHODS The study included 223 patients with temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) and 94 individuals without TMD. Face and content validity were analyzed. Structural (with confirmatory factor analysis [CFA]), convergent (with pain intensity, Fonseca Anamnestic Index [FAI], Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale [HADS], and Oral Health Impact Profile [OHIP-14]), divergent (with active pain-free maximum mouth opening [MMO]), and discriminant validity were investigated to evaluate the construct validity. Cronbach's alpha for internal consistency and the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) for test-retest reliability were computed. RESULTS Face and content validity were satisfactory. The CFA has verified the structural validity of the OBC-TR. Strong associations between the OBC-TR score and pain intensity (r = 0.88), FAI (r = 0.90), HADS (r = 0.82-0.86), and OHIP-14 (r = 0.83) scores, and MMO (r = -0.85) verified the convergent and divergent validity of the OBC-TR. Concerning discriminant validity, the OBC-TR discriminated between patients with TMD and individuals without TMD (p < 0.05). Internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha = 0.89) and test-retest reliability (ICC = 0.91) were satisfactory. CONCLUSION The OBC-TR is a valid and reliable instrument to measure the frequency of oral parafunctional behaviors in Turkish-speaking patients with TMD.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To investigate frequency of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in pain-related temporomandibular disorders (TMDp) and to determine whether specific SNPs, psychological, psychosomatic and behavioural characteristics are predictive for pain existence and intensity (low pain intensity (LPI)/high pain intensity (HPI)). METHODS Genomic DNA was extracted from buccal mucosa swabs (85 TMDp;85 controls) for evaluating frequency of selected SNPs: catechol-O-methyltransferase (rs4680, rs4818), opiorphin (rs1387964), alpha subunit of voltage-gated sodium channel Nav1.1 (rs6432860) and voltage-gated sodium channel Nav1.9 (rs33985936). Participants completed questionnaires on somatosensory amplification, anxiety and depression symptoms and oral behaviours (OB). RESULTS Sleep-related OB frequency was higher in TMDp patients compared to controls (p = 0.008). Compared to LPI, HPI patients had higher depression (p = 0.020) and anxiety scores (p = 0.017). TMDp group showed higher frequency of CC genotype (rs1387964) than controls (12.9% vs. 3.5%, p = 0.025). Following adjustments for age, sex and sleep-related OB, the significance of the recessive model (CC vs. TC + TT) between TMDp patients and controls was retained (OR = 5.783; 95%CI: 1.454-23.004). Frequency of GG genotype (rs4680 and rs4818) was higher in HPI compared to LPI patients (40% vs. 11.4%, p = 0.006; 24% vs. 3%; p = 0.012, respectively). The difference remained significant after adjusting for age, sex, depression, anxiety and sleep-related OB (rs4680: OR = 3.621; 95%CI: 1.580-8.297; rs4818: OR = 4.919, 95%CI: 1.641-14.746). CONCLUSION This study has demonstrated that rs1387964 CC genotype was associated with TMDp while rs4680 GG and rs4818 GG genotypes contributed to HPI.

Abstract
BACKGROUND With time, due to the poor knowledge on it epidemiology, the need to focus on awake bruxism as a complement of sleep studies emerged. OBJECTIVE In line with a similar recent proposal for sleep bruxism (SB), defining clinically oriented research routes to implement knowledge on awake bruxism (AB) metrics is important for an enhanced comprehension of the full bruxism spectrum, that is better assessment and more efficient management. METHODS We summarised current strategies for AB assessment and proposed a research route for improving its metrics. RESULTS Most of the literature focuses on bruxism in general or SB in particular, whilst knowledge on AB is generally fragmental. Assessment can be based on non-instrumental or instrumental approaches. The former include self-report (questionnaires, oral history) and clinical examination, whilst the latter include electromyography (EMG) of jaw muscles during wakefulness as well as the technology-enhanced ecological momentary assesment (EMA). Phenotyping of different AB activities should be the target of a research task force. In the absence of available data on the frequency and intensity of wake-time bruxism-type masticatory muscle activity, any speculation about the identification of thresholds and criteria to identify bruxers is premature. Research routes in the field must focus on the improvement of data reliability and validity. CONCLUSIONS Probing deeper into the study of AB metrics is a fundamental step to assist clinicians in preventing and managing the putative consequences at the individual level. The present manuscript proposes some possible research routes to advance current knowledge. At different levels, instrumentally based and subject-based information must be gathered in a universally accepted standardised approach.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the association of the severity of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) pain and dysfunction with the frequency of self-reported awake bruxism (AB), sleep bruxism (SB), and stress in an adult TMD-patient population. MATERIALS AND METHODS This cross-sectional study included 237 TMD patients based on the Diagnostic Criteria for TMD. Age, sex, frequency of self-reported AB and SB, and stress were included as independent variables. TMD pain and TMD dysfunction were included as dependent variables in regression analyses. Univariate and multivariable linear regression analyses were used to predict TMD pain and TMD dysfunction in two separate models. Finally, network analysis was performed to investigate the associations between all variables. RESULTS In the univariate analyses, TMD pain was significantly associated with self-reported AB-frequent (unstandardized coefficient (B) = 3.196, 95%CI 1.198-5.195, p = 0.002). TMD dysfunction was significantly associated with AB-frequent (B = 2.208, 95%CI 0.177-4.238, p = 0.033) and SB-sometimes (B = 1.698, 95%CI 0.001-3.394, p = 0.050). In the multivariable analyses, TMD pain was significantly associated with TMD dysfunction (B = 0.370, p < 0.001), stress (B=0.102, p < 0.001). TMD dysfunction was significantly associated with TMD pain (B = 0.410, p < 0.001) only. Network analysis showed that TMD pain is a bridge factor between AB, stress, and TMD dysfunction. CONCLUSIONS TMD pain is directly associated with AB, stress, and TMD dysfunction, while TMD dysfunction is only associated with TMD pain. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Reducing pain may improve pain-related dysfunction, and the management of AB and stress may improve TMD pain and dysfunction, and vice versa.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders (DC/TMD) for use in adults is in use worldwide. Until now, no version of this instrument for use in adolescents has been proposed. OBJECTIVE To present comprehensive and short-form adaptations of the adult version of DC/TMD that are appropriate for use with adolescents in clinical and research settings. METHODS International experts in TMDs and experts in pain psychology participated in a Delphi process to identify ways of adapting the DC/TMD protocol for physical and psychosocial assessment of adolescents. RESULTS The proposed adaptation defines adolescence as ages 10-19 years. Changes in the physical diagnosis (Axis I) include (i) adapting the language of the Demographics and the Symptom Questionnaires to be developmentally appropriate for adolescents, (ii) adding two general health questionnaires, one for the adolescent patient and one for their caregivers and (iii) replacing the TMD Pain Screener with the 3Q/TMD questionnaire. Changes in the psychosocial assessment (Axis II) include (i) adapting the language of the Graded Chronic Pain Scale to be developmentally appropriate for adolescents, (ii) adding anxiety and depression assessment that have been validated for adolescents and (iii) adding three constructs (stress, catastrophizing and sleep disorders) to assess psychosocial functioning in adolescents. CONCLUSION The recommended DC/TMD, including Axis I and Axis II for adolescents, is appropriate to use in clinical and research settings. This adapted first version for adolescents includes changes in Axis I and Axis II requiring reliability and validity testing in international settings. Official translations of the comprehensive and short-form to different languages according to INfORM requirements will enable a worldwide dissemination and implementation.

Abstract
PURPOSE The prevalence of DC / TMD diagnosis of individuals with internal derangement of TMJ who want to receive TMD treatment in a tertiary clinic in the Turkish population and comparison of the criteria applied in Axis I and Axis II. METHODS This study was carried out on 200 individuals older than 18 years of age who have internal disorder of Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ). Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders (DC / TMD) Axis I and II were applied. RESULTS The female to male ratio of individuals with internal derangement of TMJ in the Turkish population was 3.5. The Pearson correlation coefficient between the internal derangement of the Right TMJ and the internal derangement of the Left TMJ is 0.804 and has a statistically significant relationship (p <0.05). CONCLUSIONS For DC / TMD, a more comprehensive study is needed to compare the results found in the Turkish population with other populations.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders (DC/TMD) are used worldwide in adults. Until now, no adaptation for use in children has been proposed. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to present comprehensive and short-form adaptations of Axis I and Axis II of the DC/TMD for adults that are appropriate for use with children in clinical and research settings. METHODS Global Delphi studies with experts in TMDs and in pain psychology identified ways of adapting the DC/TMD for children. RESULTS The proposed adaptation is suitable for children aged 6-9 years. Proposed changes in Axis I include (i) adapting the language of the Demographics and the Symptom Questionnaires to be developmentally appropriate for children, (ii) adding a general health questionnaire for children and one for their parents, (iii) replacing the TMD Pain Screener with the 3Q/TMD questionnaire and (iv) modifying the clinical examination protocol. Proposed changes in Axis II include (i) for the Graded Chronic Pain Scale, to be developmentally appropriate for children, (ii) adding anxiety and depression assessments that have been validated in children and (iii) adding three constructs (stress, catastrophising and sleep disorders) to assess psychosocial functioning in children. CONCLUSION The recommended DC/TMD, including Axis I and Axis II, for children aged 6-9 years, is appropriate for use in clinical and research settings. This adapted the first version for children includes changes in Axis I and Axis II changes requiring reliability and validity testing in international settings. Official translations to different languages according to INfORM requirements will enable a worldwide dissemination and implementation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Oral behaviors represent a diverse array of habits beyond the physiological behaviors of the stomatognathic system. OBJECTIVE To describe the prevalence of different oral behaviors, as reported with the Oral Behavior Checklist (OBC-21), in a convenience sample of patients attending an Italian university clinic for routine dental cares. METHODS In this study, charts of adult patients presenting to the dental department of a regional hospital in Trieste, Italy, from January 2018 and January 2019 were reviewed. Patients with complete files were retrieved, and those with orofacial pain complaints were excluded. OBC-21 scores and grades (score of 0 corresponding to no risk, 1-24 to low risk, and higher than 24 to high risk) were analyzed and stratified according to age and sex. RESULTS Data from a total of 1424 patients were reported. The overall mean OBC score was 13.3 ± 9.9, with 6.7% no-risk grade, 79.6% low-risk grade, and 13.7% high-risk grade. In general, mean OBC scores decreased with increasing age. Females showed a higher frequency of high-risk grade than males. Most frequent prevalent habits included yawning (73.1%), eating between meals (66.9%) and chewing food on one side only (63.3%). Other behaviors were also highly prevalent, including pressing, touching, or holding teeth together other than while eating (52.7%) and awake clenching (47.5%). CONCLUSION A low-risk grade of oral behaviors has been found to be frequent in our sample. Future studies are warranted to confirm these findings in larger, representative general populations and to assess if any of these habits are linked to negative effects on the stomatognathic system.

Abstract
Dental anxiety is a crucial problem for dentistry because it may represent a significant risk to oral health. Within the framework of the Cognitive Vulnerability Model (CVM), which sheds light on the cognitive vulnerability patterns that may cause dental anxiety, this study aimed to assess the psychometric characteristics of the Italian version of the Dental Fear Maintenance Questionnaire (DFMQ). The DFMQ is a 32-item questionnaire that assesses four cognitive vulnerability patterns, i.e., dangerousness, disgust, unpredictability, and uncontrollability. In a sample of 200 dental patients who had accessed public-university-hospital dental surgery, this study assessed the model fit of the DFMQ and different types of validity (i.e., predictive, convergent, construct, and discriminant validity). In addition, potential differences between DFMQ dimensions were assessed based on gender (men vs. women) and age ranges. All indicators of cognitive vulnerability were significantly associated with high dental anxiety when each variable was included independently. In contrast, when the DFMQ subscales were considered together, only unpredictability and uncontrollability were found to be associated with high dental anxiety. Women had higher scores for unpredictability, uncontrollability, and general dangerousness than men. In addition, older patients had higher scores for some vulnerability cognitive patterns than younger patients. This study provides Italian dentists and researchers with a valid questionnaire to assess cognitive factors associated with dental anxiety.

Abstract
A comprehensive evaluation of obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) may allow for the development of more efficient management of Down syndrome (DS). We aimed to evaluate the effect of a multidisciplinary approach to DS with OSA. A total of 48 DS children aged 4−12 years were prospectively investigated with nasal endoscopy, orthodontic examination, and overnight polygraphy (PG); the Italian Child Sleep Habits Questionnaire (CSHQ-IT) was filled out by the mothers. The total CSHQ-IT score was 63 (96% of children reporting sleep problems). The major ear, nose, and throat characteristics were enlarged palatine tonsils (62%), adenoid tonsils (85%), and chronic rhinosinusitis (85%). DS children showed orthognathic profile in 68% of cases, class I relationship in 63%, and cross-bite in 51%. PG revealed OSA in 67% of cases (37% mild, 63% moderate−severe). The oxygen desaturation index (ODI) was higher in the group with OSA (5.2) than with non-OSA (1.3; p < 0.001). The ODI was higher (p = 0.001) and SpO2 lower (p = 0.03) in children with moderate−severe OSA than with mild OSA. The apnoea−hypopnea index (AHI) and percentage time with SpO2 < 90% were higher in DS children with grade III than with grade I or II adenoids (5 vs. 1, p = 0.04, and 1.2 vs. 0.1, p = 0.01, respectively). No significant correlations were found between PG and the total CSHQ-IT score or orthodontic data. However, children showing associated cross-bite, grade III adenoids and size 3 or 4 palatine tonsils showed higher AHI and ODI than those without (p = 0.01 and p = 0.04, respectively). A coordinated multidisciplinary approach with overnight PG is a valuable tool when developing diagnostic protocols for OSA in DS.

Abstract
Over the years, several tools have been proposed to measure oral behaviours (OB). Recently, a smartphone-based application for ecological momentary assessment (EMA) has been introduced to collect real-time data on waking-time OB. The aim of this study was to compare the self-reported frequency of OB by means of a standardised questionnaire with that recorded with a smartphone-based application for EMA. A total of 151 participants, recruited from the general population, were invited to fill in the Oral Behaviour Checklist (OBC). Scores for four questions concerning grinding, clenching, tooth contact, and mandible bracing were computed. Afterwards, participants were provided with a smartphone application for prolonged real-time reporting of OB. One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and a general linear mixed model (GLMM) were used to compare the responses to each OBC question with the frequencies of the same condition recorded with the EMA. Results showed significant association between OBC responses and the EMA recordings. In particular, increased frequencies of clenching, grinding, and teeth contact were recorded by individuals who provided higher OBC scores. On the other hand, a nonlinear association was observed for “mandible bracing”, pointing out difficulties in the comprehension of this condition.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To assess the association between waking-state oral behaviours and temporomandibular disorder (TMD) subgroups and to develop new scoring methods for the Oral Behavior Checklist (OBC). METHODS Patients with any TMD diagnosis, according to the diagnostic criteria for TMD (DC/TMD), were divided into subgroups: 'Dysfunctional-TMD' (n = 70), only mechanical dysfunction; 'Painful-TMD' (n = 204), only myalgia, arthralgia or both; and 'Painful-Dysfunctional TMD' (n = 95), combined pain and dysfunction. A group of individuals without TMD, 'Non-TMD' (n = 374), was used for testing associations. Participants completed the OBC. An exploratory factor analysis, followed by a confirmatory factor analysis of the OBC responses, identified 2 major factors, named non-functional activities (NFA) and functional activities (FA). Component total scores were computed. Differences among subgroups for OBC-MS (mean score) and NFA and FA factor scores were estimated using one-way ANOVA and Tukey post hoc tests. Significance was set at p < .05. RESULTS The OBC-MS in Non-TMD, Painful-TMD and Painful-Dysfunctional TMD subgroups was higher than in the Dysfunctional-TMD subgroup (p ≤ .001). NFA in Painful-TMD and Painful-Dysfunctional TMD subgroups were higher than in the Non-TMD group (p < .05); NFA in the Dysfunctional-TMD subgroup were lower than in the Painful-TMD subgroup (p = .034). In contrast, FA in Painful-TMD, Dysfunctional-TMD and Painful-Dysfunctional TMD subgroups were lower than in the Non-TMD group (p < .0001). CONCLUSIONS A new scoring method for the OBC results in item reduction and creation of meaningful subscales for functional and non-functional behaviours, which are differentially associated with painful and dysfunctional TMDs. This may help clinicians to better tailor treatment for the management of subtypes of TMD patients.

Abstract
Background The aim of this study was to investigate the association of oral behaviors (OBs) with anxiety, depression, and jaw function in patients with temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) in China. Material/Methods A total of 537 patients diagnosed with TMD were included in this study (average age, 31.5512.08 years; 86 men [16.0%] and 451 women [84.0%]). There were 31 cases of masticatory muscle pain, 459 cases of disc displacement, and 13 cases of arthralgia/arthrosis, and 34 cases were uncategorized. Patients were assessed using the Oral Behaviors Checklist (OBC), Jaw Functional Limitation Scale (JFLS), Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7) scale, and Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9). The relationships between OBC scores and mouth opening, pain scores, JFLS, PHQ-9, and GAD-7 were evaluated with Spearmans correlation analysis. The median TMD symptom duration was 3 (0.5154) months; men and women did not differ significantly in symptom duration or in the number of episodes of depression and anxiety. Results The following OBs were common in patients with TMDs: putting pressure on the jaw (52.9%), chewing food on 1 side (47.5%), and holding teeth together during activities other than eating (33.3%). The OBC scores were significantly correlated with the JFLS, PHQ-9, and GAD-7 scores (P<0.01). Conclusions Patients with TMDs exhibit specific OBs, which are associated with depression, anxiety, and jaw function. It is necessary to further investigate the interaction of OBs with depression and anxiety in the development of TMDs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The diagnosis of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) is based on patient history and physical examination, and may require medical imaging. Masticatory muscle palpation is essential to make a diagnosis of TMD. However, the response of masticatory muscles to mechanical pressure stimuli depends on many physical and psychological factors. OBJECTIVE This study aimed at determining the impact of somatosensory amplification (SSA)-an estimate of somatic awareness and bodily hypervigilance-on pressure pain thresholds (PPTs) measured at both trigeminal and extra-trigeminal locations in healthy individuals. METHODS PPTs were measured at the right anterior temporalis and superficial masseter, and the thenar eminence of the right hand in one hundred healhty individuals (69F, 31M), divided in three groups based on their SSA scores: low (N = 32), intermediate (N = 34) and high (N = 34). General linear models were used to test between-group differences in PPTs including sex as a covariate. The level of significance was set at P < .05. RESULTS Individuals with high SSA had lower PPTs at the anterior temporalis than individuals with low (P = .006) and intermediate (P = .001) SSA. No significant between-group differences were found in PPTs measured at the masseter (P = .372). PPTs measured at the thenar eminence were significantly lower in the high than the low SSA group (P = .009). Females had lower PPTs at the masseter than males (P = .021) but not at other muscle locations (all P > .05). CONCLUSION Increased somatosensory amplification is associated with decreased pressure pain thresholds at both trigeminal and extra-trigeminal locations in healthy individuals. SSA could be a potential confounder while diagnosing TMD and evaluating treatment outcomes.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To assess the prevalence of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) in a sample of tinnitus patients and to determine the association between tinnitus, TMD, neck disability, and oral parafunctions. METHODS Seventy-nine tinnitus patients were enrolled and underwent standardized clinical examination for TMD. The tinnitus severity was measured with the Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (THI). The oral parafunctions were self-reported with the Oral Behavior Checklist (OBC). The neck disability was recorded with the Neck Disability Index (NDI). RESULTS More than half of the sample presented TMD, and the most frequent diagnosis was TMD pain. Higher THI was observed in TMD-pain individuals, compared to TMD-free (β 18.4; 95%CI 6.7, 30.1; p = 0.002). The OBC showed a significant low-to-moderate positive correlation with the THI (rho= 0.368, p = 0.001), while the NDI did not. DISCUSSION Standardized assessment of TMD and oral behaviors should be integrated into the routine diagnostic evaluations of tinnitus patients.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To compare the smallest thickness that can be perceived between occluding teeth (occlusal tactile acuity, OTA) of temporomandibular disorder pain (TMD-P) patients with that of control (CTR) individuals. METHODS Twenty TMD-P patients (17 women and 3 men, mean age: 31.3 ± 10.4 years) diagnosed according to the Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders (DC/TMD) protocol and 20 age- and gender-matched controls (17 women and 3 men, mean age: 31.4 ± 10.5 years) were enrolled. The OTA was tested with 10 different thicknesses: 9 aluminium foils (8 µm-72 µm with a constant increment of 8 µm) and 1 sham test (without foil), each thickness being tested 10 times in random order (100 tests in total). The participants were instructed to close their mouth once and to report whether they felt the foil between their molar teeth. A between-group comparison (TMD-P vs CTR) was performed for each testing thickness (analysis of variance for repeated measurements, with Bonferroni multiple correction) (P < .005). RESULTS Significantly increased OTA was observed in the TMD-P group for the thicknesses between 8 µm and 40 µm, while no significant differences were found for the sham test and for the larger thicknesses tested (from 48 µm to 72 µm). CONCLUSIONS TMD-pain subjects presented an increased OTA as compared to controls.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Bruxism is a repetitive masticatory muscle activity with a multifactorial etiology , that can be associated to emotional factors. AIM The aim of the study is to identify the presence of oral habits (OHs) and their association with the trait of anxiety (State-Trait Anxiety Inventory for Children [STAI-C]) in pediatric patients with possible sleep bruxism (PSB). METHODS Children between 3 and 12 years of age with PSB reported by their parents with complete deciduous or mixed dentition were included in the present study. Sociodemographic data (SD) as well as those on OHs such as only natural (ON), artificial breastfeeding (OA) or both (NA), finger sucking (FS), pacifier use (PC), and biting nails (BN) or objects (OB) were obtained through an interview with the parents/guardians answered the Brazilian version of the STAI-C questionnaire. STATISTICAL ANALYSIS USED SD and OH as well as STAI-C findings were descriptively evaluated, while the associations between OH and STAI-C with PSB were evaluated using the Chi-square test (P < 0.05). RESULTS The final sample was 52 children (6.62 ± 1.8 years). Of these, 51.9% were males, 82.7% reported not living in social risk areas, and 21.2% were only children. Considering the OH, patients participated in ON (26.9%), OA (9.6%), and both (63.5%); 13.5% had an FS habit and 46.2% had related PC use; and 80.8% were reported to have OB biting behaviors, while 53.8% participated in BN. The STAI-C was present in 25 (48.1%) patients with PSB and was not associated with the presence of OH. CONCLUSION There is no association between STAI-C and OH in pediatric patients with PSB.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The prevalence of malocclusion, temporomandibular disorders (TMD) and oral parafunctions is highly debated in children population. OBJECTIVES To investigate the prevalence of malocclusion, self-reported oral parafunctions and TMD-pain in Italian schoolchildren and to assess the association between the examined factors. METHODS A total of 700 children aged 9-11 years were selected among six public schools in Campania region (Italy). Molar relationship, overjet, overbite and cross-bite were assessed through a clinical examination. Furthermore, the subjects were demanded to fill in a validated questionnaire for TMD-pain screening and the short form of the Oral Behaviours Checklist. Descriptive statistics were used to report the frequencies. The associations between occlusal traits, oral parafunctions and TMD-pain were analysed with a Pearson chi-square test, as expressed by odds ratio and 95% confidence intervals. The significance level was set at P < 0.05. RESULTS Molar Class I was the most frequently encountered molar relationship, followed by molar Class II, subdivision and molar Class III. Increased overjet was more common than negative overjet. Posterior cross-bite was observed in 12% of children. TMD-pain was recorded in 14.7% of subjects. High frequency of oral parafunctions was reported in 21.3% of subjects. A significant association was found between TMD-pain and negative overbite. Cross-bite and high frequency of oral parafunctions were associated with TMD-pain. CONCLUSION The current results show that malocclusion, self-reported oral parafunctions and TMD-pain are frequent findings among Italian schoolchildren and that some occlusal factors and high frequency of oral parafunctions might be associated with TMD-pain.

Abstract
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM Oral parafunctional behaviors are characterized by an overuse of the masticatory muscles, thus applying aberrant occlusal force to the teeth for prolonged periods. However, whether increased periodontal receptor activity in individuals with a high degree of oral parafunction alters the occlusal sensitivity is unclear. PURPOSE The purpose of this clinical study was to evaluate occlusal sensitivity in adults reporting a high or low frequency of awake oral parafunctional behaviors, as assessed with the short version of the oral behavior checklist (OBC-It 6). MATERIAL AND METHODS Self-reporting questionnaires (N=212) were distributed among dental and medical students. Individuals with an OBC-It 6 score below the 20th percentile (low-frequency parafunction (LFP) group: 13 men and 15 women) and above the 80th percentile (high-frequency parafunction [HFP] group: 11 men and 17 women) were selected for the occlusal sensitivity assessment. The occlusal sensitivity was tested with 10 different thicknesses: 9 aluminum foils ranging from 8 μm to 72 μm with a constant increment of 8 μm and 1 sham test without any foil. The testing foils were presented 10 times in random order (100 tests in total). The participants were instructed to close their mouth only once and to report whether they felt the aluminum foil between their teeth. A between-group comparison (HFP versus LFP) was performed for each testing thickness (Student t test for unpaired data, Bonferroni correction) (α=.005). RESULTS For the sham test and for the testing thicknesses between 8 μm and 48 μm, no statistically significant differences were found between the 2 groups. The thicknesses 0.56 mm, 0.64 mm, and 0.72 mm were significantly better perceived in the HFP group than in the LFP group (P<.005, P<.001, and P<.001). CONCLUSIONS Individuals with a high frequency of self-reported awake oral parafunction presented higher occlusal sensitivity.

Abstract
Objective: The aim of this cross-sectional epidemiologic study was to estimate the prevalence of temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) and oral parafunctions in Italian adolescents and to assess the associations between age, gender, oral habits, and TMD. Methods: Three hundred sixty-one adolescents, aged 14-18 years, were examined for TMDs according to the Research Diagnostic Criteria for TMD. Furthermore, oral habits were explored by means of a written questionnaire. Results: Almost one-third of the sample (27.4%) showed at least one TMD diagnosis, with myofascial pain being the most prevalent. Gum chewing was the most prevalent oral habit. The female gender and oral habits were significantly associated with TMD. Conclusion: TMD in adolescents, although lower than in adults, are significantly prevalent. General practitioners should include TMD screening methods in their routine dental examinations of adolescent patients. Adolescents should be instructed on how to avoid incorrect oral behaviors that might predispose them to the onset of TMD.
