Abstract
BACKGROUND Lingual pressure (LP) generation is cooperatively controlled not only by the intrinsic tongue (I-ton) muscles but also by hyoid muscle activation. However, the measurement of endurance and fatigue properties of I-ton muscles is difficult due to the instability of electrodes. OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to apply suction electrodes to measure electromyograms (EMGs) of I-ton muscle and to evaluate integrated EMG amplitude (iEMG) and mean power frequency (MPF) of EMG in the I-ton and hyoid muscles performing continuous LP. METHODS Twenty healthy adult volunteers (10 males, 10 females, mean age 28.8 years) were instructed to perform 10-s LP generation tasks at 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% of maximum LP in randomised order with visual feedback. During each task, EMGs of the I-ton, suprahyoid (S-hyo), infrahyoid (I-hyo) and masseter (Mass) muscles were simultaneously recorded. The iEMG and MPF of EMG burst during 10-s LP tasks were compared. The recording period was divided into three substages to analyse temporal changes with the Friedman test. RESULTS During the 10-s task, the iEMG significantly increased as the LP strength increased (p < .001). There was no time-dependent change in the I-ton iEMG; however, the MPF of the I-ton EMG burst decreased in all tasks (p < .05). The S-hyo and I-hyo iEMGs gradually increased, especially with strong LP (p < .01). CONCLUSION While I-ton muscles may easily fatigue during 10-s LP generation, S-hyo and I-hyo muscles may help compensate for the weakened I-ton muscle activity by increasing their activity to maintain LP.

Abstract
The swallowing process involves complex muscle coordination mechanisms. When alterations in such mechanisms are produced by neurological conditions or diseases, a swallowing disorder known as dysphagia occurs. The instrumental evaluation of dysphagia is currently performed by invasive and experience-dependent techniques. Otherwise, non-invasive magnetic methods have proven to be suitable for various biomedical applications and might also be applicable for an objective swallowing assessment. In this pilot study, we performed a novel approach for deglutition evaluation based on active magnetic motion sensing with permanent magnet cantilever actuators. During the intake of liquids with different consistency, we recorded magnetic signals of relative movements between a stationary sensor and a body-worn actuator on the cricoid cartilage. Our results indicate the detection capability of swallowing-related movements in terms of a characteristic pattern. Consequently, the proposed technique offers the potential for dysphagia screening and biofeedback-based therapies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Fatigue is an important factor for muscle strengthening in rehabilitation medicine. Frequency analysis has been regarded as the gold standard for muscle fatigue assessment in surface electromyography (EMG). However, there are no experiments quantifying fatigue with grouped discharge (GD), which is one of the historical phenomena observed in patients having fatigue, by using high sampling rate recording of EMG. OBJECTIVE To investigate the effect of fatigue, which is induced by repeated posterior tongue lift movement (TLM), on the occurrence of GD peaks, thus, to provide possible basis as a parameter for future fatigue evaluation. METHODS Nineteen healthy adults (9 men and 10 women) participated in this study. The muscle fatigue protocol consisted of repetitive posterior TLM and maximum voluntary contractions (MVC). Bilateral N-EMG (Neck surface EMG for measuring the muscle activity of the posterior tongue) was recorded. RESULTS Subjective tongue fatigue at the end of the protocol was significantly higher than at beginning throughout the muscle fatigue protocol (p < .01). The frequency of occurrence of GD peaks was 0.9 ± 1.2 (per second) at the baseline in 33 of 38 subject sides, and significantly increased depending on fatigue progression (p < .01). CONCLUSION It was shown that fatigue due to repetitive posterior tongue lifting resulted in significant increase in the frequency of occurrence of GD peaks. Especially, the nature of GD, showing very few occurrences at non-fatigue condition, might work as an advantageous property for its use in future absolute evaluation of fatigue phenomena.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION It is known that oral frailty is one of the risk factors for physical frailty. Therefore, early detection, appropriate treatment, and prevention of oral frailty are really important. Tongue lifting exercise has been identified as a well-known method for improving decreased tongue pressure, one of the factors for oral frailty. However, few reports have investigated how tongue-strengthening exercises affect physical function and body composition. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of isometric tongue lifting exercises on oral function, physical function, and body composition. METHODS Participants were 49 elderly people aged 68-79 years, who had previously participated in the "Itoshima Frail Study." Participants performed isometric tongue lift exercises for 3 months. Oral function (tongue pressure and oral diadocokinesis), physical function (grip strength, open-eyed one-leg standing, sit-to-stand motion time, 5-m gait speed, and 3-m Timed up and go [TUG]), and body composition were measured at baseline and post-intervention, and the extent of changes in each item was statistically analyzed. Furthermore, participants were divided into physical frailty/pre-frailty and robust groups based on the Japanese version of the frail scale proposed by [BMC Geriatr. 2015 Apr;15:36] and were compared in terms of the extent of changes in each item baseline and the post-intervention. RESULTS After the intervention, oral function increased significantly together with a significant improvement in physical function, open-eyed one-leg standing time, sit-to-stand motion, and 3-m TUG. For body composition, visceral fat level and basal metabolic rate decreased significantly. Although no significant change in body composition was observed in the physical frailty/pre-frailty group after the intervention, significant improvements in several items were observed in the robust group. CONCLUSION Isometric tongue lifting exercise can effectively improve oral function. Furthermore, it might affect physical function and body composition.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Masticatory movement occurs complicatedly and bilaterally. Although the tongue plays an important role in mastication, bilateral tongue function during mastication has not been clarified yet. OBJECTIVE To investigate the effect of food properties on posterior tongue activity and coordination of muscles bilaterally by electromyography (EMG). METHODS Twenty healthy adults (10 males and 10 females; mean age 28 years; range: 22-33 years) participated in this study. Three test foods, gummy jelly (hard food), sponge cake (soft food requiring crushing), and mashed potatoes (soft food not requiring crushing), were used. Bilateral masseter N-EMG (surface electromyography for measuring the muscle activity of posterior tongue) and submental EMG were carried out while the participants chewed three test foods. The participants were instructed to masticate three test foods only on the right side and only on the left side unilaterally. RESULTS In the case of gummy jelly, N-EMG activity on the mastication side was significantly larger than that on the non-mastication side (P < .01). Regarding temporal relationship between the masseter and N-EMG activity, in the case of gummy jelly, the percentage of cases where the N-EMG peak was observed during masseter muscle EMG bursts was significantly higher than those for sponge cake and mashed potatoes (P < .01). CONCLUSION N-EMG activity on the mastication side was significantly larger than that on the non-mastication side in the mastication of hard foods. Tongue showed activity pattern changes and coordinated with the masseter muscle depending on food texture.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Tongue lift movement (TLM) is used as a therapy to improve tongue pressure against the hard palate for dysphagic patients. OBJECTIVE The present study aimed to characterize the time-dependent endurance changes in hyoid muscle activity and hyoid-laryngeal displacement during TLM in different ways. METHODS Sixteen young healthy volunteers were instructed to perform TLM at maximum effort (100%) against the anterior and posterior parts of the hard palate using a balloon-type tongue pressure instrument, followed by a 10-second recording during anterior 80% TLM, anterior 100% TLM, posterior 80% TLM and posterior 100% TLM with visual feedback. Electromyography (EMG) of suprahyoid (S-Hyo) and infrahyoid (I-Hyo) muscles and videofluorography were simultaneously recorded. To evaluate temporal changes, the recording period was divided into three substages: early, middle and late. Tongue pressure, integrated EMG (iEMG), power frequency of EMG burst and hyoid-laryngeal position were compared among the conditions (80% vs 100%, anterior vs posterior and early vs middle vs late). RESULTS Tongue pressure was stably maintained for 10 seconds in all conditions. S-Hyo iEMG and I-Hyo iEMG were significantly greater at 100% than at 80%, while no significant difference was observed between positions. S-Hyo iEMG and I-Hyo iEMG significantly increased at the late stage, while power frequency of EMG burst gradually decreased. Significant temporal changes in laryngeal elevation were observed only in posterior 100% TLM. CONCLUSION The current results suggested that isometric posterior TLM may be more useful compared with anterior TLM in clinical situations for dysphagic patients to elevate the hyolaryngeal complex.
