Effects of Elevating Zinc Supplementation on the Health and Production Parameters of High-Producing Dairy Cows

This study's objective was to determine the effects of increasing the dietary added zinc (Zn) on the milk production, milk somatic cell count (SCC), and immunoglobulin and antioxidant marker concentrations in the blood of dairy cows. Twelve Holstein cows (67 ± 2.5 days in milk) were assigned randomly to (1) a diet containing Zn-methionine at 76 mg/kg of DM (CTL) or (2) CTL top-dressed with about 21 mg/kg of DM extra Zn-methionine (+Zn) for 70 d. The concentrations of reduced (GSH) and oxidized (GSSG) glutathione, malondialdehyde (MDA), catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and immunoglobulins in the blood were measured on d 0, 35, and 70. Compared to CTL, +Zn decreased the dry matter intake (DMI) throughout the trial and the milk yield (MY) during the first phase of feeding (0-35 d). It, however, increased the milk yield during the last phase (36-70 d). The +Zn tended to have lower and greater milk protein yields than CTL during the first and last feeding phases, respectively. The +Zn tended to decrease the SCC and was associated with lower plasma GSH: GSSG and lower serum SOD concentrations relative to CTL. The +Zn did not affect the immunoglobulins, MDA, or CAT. Despite the early DMI and MY reduction, the prolonged Zn-methionine supplementation at about 100 mg/kg of DM improved the milk yield, possibly as a result of the improved udder health of dairy cows.

Do Micronutrient and Omega-3 Fatty Acid Supplements Affect Human Maternal Immunity during Pregnancy? A Scoping Review

Maternal dietary micronutrients and omega-3 fatty acids support development of the fetal and neonatal immune system. Whether supplementation is similarly beneficial for the mother during gestation has received limited attention. A scoping review of human trials was conducted looking for evidence of biochemical, genomic, and clinical effects of supplementation on the maternal immune system. The authors explored the literature on PubMed, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science databases from 2010 to the present day using PRISMA-ScR methodology. Full-length human trials in English were searched for using general terms and vitamin A, B12, C, D, and E; choline; iodine; iron; selenium; zinc; and docosahexaenoic/eicosapentaenoic acid. Of 1391 unique articles, 36 were eligible for inclusion. Diverse biochemical and epigenomic effects of supplementation were identified that may influence innate and adaptive immunity. Possible clinical benefits were encountered in malaria, HIV infections, anemia, Type 1 diabetes mellitus, and preventing preterm delivery. Only limited publications were identified that directly explored maternal immunity in pregnancy and the effects of micronutrients. None provided a holistic perspective. It is concluded that supplementation may influence biochemical aspects of the maternal immune response and some clinical outcomes, but the evidence from this review is not sufficient to justify changes to current guidelines.

A meta-analysis and meta-regression of the effects of vitamin E supplementation on serum enrichment, udder health, milk yield, and reproductive performance of transition cows

Vitamin E is an essential nutrient for cows, but the effect of vitamin E supplementation is often controversially discussed in the published literature. The main goal of this meta-analysis was to evaluate the effects of vitamin E supplementation on its serum and colostrum enrichment, milk yield (MY), and somatic cell counts (SCC), as well as on various reproductive variables of transition cows, by considering a large set of variables that might influence the responses to vitamin E supplementation. After a broad search in journals and databases with keywords related to transition cows supplemented with vitamin E and appropriate filtering of the results, 36 papers including 53 trials were selected, and their data were extracted into a database. A meta-analysis was conducted on the extracted data. The analysis showed enrichment of serum vitamin E both at parturition (effect size: 2.423) and postpartum (effect size: 0.473), but no effects of vitamin E supplementation on IgG concentration in colostrum (effect size: -0.05) were found. There was a tendency for supplemented cows to produce more milk (effect size: 1.29) during the first month of lactation. Because of large heterogeneity, a meta-regression was performed but none of the presumed influencing factors was identified as a potential variable affecting MY. Milk SCC, as an indicator of udder health, was unaffected by vitamin E supplementation. Vitamin E supplementation tended to decrease the calving to first estrus period (CFP), whereby supplementing Se and taking parity into account in the analysis significantly lowered the CFP. Cows receiving additional vitamin E had, on average, 6.1% fewer cases of retained placenta, whereby Se supplementation and breed were key factors improving the effect of vitamin E to reduce retained placenta. In this regard, breeds other than Holstein responded better and these cows showed a lower incidence of retained placenta. The supplemented cows showed fewer days open (effect size: -0.31), and this improvement was affected linearly by increasing the dosage administered. Also, cows showed fewer services per conception with increasing dosage of vitamin E. In conclusion, this analysis showed that supplementing vitamin E did not affect SCC or colostrum quality but improved reproductive performance of transition cows, an effect consistent with increased levels of serum vitamin E and, for some variables, being modulated by Se supplementation.

Global warming: Impact, adaptation and amelioration strategies for bovine under tropical climatic conditions

Livestock are exposed to different climatic extreme events such as high air temperature, humidity, flood, drought, desert, heat wave, feed, fodder and water scarcity etc. which now seems to be very common in the tropical and subtropical climatic conditions. The climate change scenario is assumed to be a major threat to animal production systems under tropical climate. The demand of food or the food security issue compel us to undertake holistic approach to sustainable livestock production system that may be one of the remedies for fulfilling the demand of fast growing population. The objective of this review is to focus on the major effect on dairy production system and different strategies to overcome the adverse effect of heat stress under tropical climatic conditions. The identificationof unique adaptive traits between and within breeds and their propagation seem to be essential in near future in respect of climate change scenario. The management and feeding strategies proved to be beneficial for relieving adverse effects of heat stress for maintaining the productivity of dairy animals. Nevertheless, decision makers, extension services and research institutions have to support and encourage livestock activities to enhance the animal productivity under changed climate scenario.
