Honeybee and Plant Products as Natural Antimicrobials in Enhancement of Poultry Health and Production. SUSTAINABILITY 2021. Abstract
The quality and safety attributes of poultry products have attracted increasing widespread attention and interest from scholarly groups and the general population. As natural and safe alternatives to synthetic and artificial chemical drugs (e.g., antibiotics), botanical products are recently being used in poultry farms more than 60% of the time for producing organic products. Medicinal plants, and honeybee products, are natural substances, and they were added to poultry diets in a small amount (between 1% and 3%) as a source of nutrition and to provide health benefits for poultry. In addition, they have several biological functions in the poultry body and may help to enhance their welfare. These supplements can increase the bodyweight of broilers and the egg production of laying hens by approximately 7% and 10% and enhance meat and egg quality by more than 25%. Moreover, they can improve rooster semen quality by an average of 20%. Previous research on the main biological activities performed by biotics has shown that most research only concentrated on the notion of using botanical products as growth promoters, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial agents. In the current review, the critical effects and functions of bee products and botanicals are explored as natural and safe alternative feed additives in poultry production, such as antioxidants, sexual-stimulants, immuno-stimulants, and for producing healthy products.

Royal Jelly Improves the Morphology of the Reproductive Tract, Internal Egg Quality, and Blood Biochemical Parameters in Laying Hens at the Late Stage of Production. Abstract
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of royal jelly (RJ) on the morphology of the reproductive tract, egg production, and blood biochemical indices of aged laying hens. In total, 120 Lohman Brown laying hens at week 58 of age were randomly assigned into three equal groups. Pure RJ was dissolved in distilled water and injected subcutaneously as follows: the first treatment (R1; 100 mg RJ kg-1); the second treatment (R2; 200 mg RJ kg-1); the control treatment (CON; 1 mL distilled water). Both RJ-treated groups exhibited a significantly higher number of large yellow follicles (LYFs), small yellow follicles (SYFs), and large white follicles (LWFs) (p ˂ 0.05). Furthermore, RJ treatment significantly increased the diameter and weight of the F1 follicles. However, only the R2 group exhibited significantly greater ovary and uterus weights. RJ treatment did not affect the percentage of oviduct and weight of ovarian stroma. In addition, RJ increased the hen-day egg production rate compared with the CON group; however, only the R2 group showed greater egg weight (p = 0.032). RJ treatment also improved the albumen height, Haugh units, and yolk index. The administration of RJ significantly decreased the serum glucose, but increased the levels of serum albumen and cholesterol. In conclusion, RJ treatment may improve the morphology of the reproductive tract (including follicular growth and oviduct morphology), egg production rate, and internal egg quality traits of aged laying hens.

Abstract
In recent years, neohesperidin (NH), as a class of natural flavonoids, has received more and more attention in nutrition research. However, the research on the application of neohesperidin in the laying hens is rarely reported. This study was conducted to determine the effects that different concentrations of dietary NH have on the production performance, egg quality, serum biochemistry and intestinal morphology of laying hens. A total of 240 Lohmann commercial laying hens (66 wk old) were divided into 4 groups, with each group's diet containing a different concentration of NH (0, 100 mg/kg, 200 mg/kg, and 400 mg/kg). Significant associations were found between NH consumption and both higher egg production (P = 0.050) and lower FCR (P = 0.028) after 12 wk NH feed. At 12 wk, eggs produced by hens consuming a 200 mg/kg NH diet had significantly thicker eggshells (P = 0.059) than those produced by hens consuming a 400 mg/kg diet. Dietary NH addition improved albumen height and Haugh unit after 15 d of storage (P < 0.01). However, no significant associations between NH consumption and these factors were identified after 12 wk. Dietary NH addition had no significant effects apparent of gel properties at 12 wk. In addition, NH can effectively reduce the content of total cholesterol (TC) (P = 0.042) and Groups treated with 100 mg/kg NH supplementation showed significantly increased T-AOC concentrations compared to control (P = 0.013) in serum. Hens fed an NH-supplemented diet exhibited a longer villus height and a higher villus/crypt ratio in the ileum (P < 0.01) as compared to controls, as well as lower crypt depth in the duodenum, jejunum and ileum. These results indicate that, as compared to a control diet, an NH-supplemented diet results in higher egg production and quality, as well as improvement in egg gel properties, serum biochemistry and intestinal morphology.

Abstract
Simple Summary The present investigation examined improvements in egg hatchability and the growth performance of hatched chicks of two strains upon injection with increasing concentrations of royal jelly (RJ). The results showed positive effects of RJ injection on all parameters. Limited impacts of the different chicken strains were observed on the tested parameters. The study revealed that varying the chicken strain could alter the response to the in ovo injection with RJ. Abstract The hypothesis of the present work was that the effects of in ovo injection may differ in different chicken strains. The influence of in ovo royal jelly (RJ) injection on hatching, growth and blood parameters in two chicken strains (Dokki-4 and El-Salam as example for different strains) was evaluated. A total of 1080 eggs were used. On the seventh day of incubation, the eggs were randomly allocated into six experimental groups in a 2 × 3 arrangement that included the two chicken strains and three concentrations of RJ (0, 0.25 and 0.5 mL RJ/egg). Injection with 0.5 mL RJ/egg improved hatchability compared to the other treatments. The El-Salam strain exhibited significantly higher body weight and body weight gain than the Dokki-4 strain. Injection with 0.5 mL RJ/egg significantly (p < 0.05) improved chicken body weight and daily weight gain compared to the control treatment. RJ injection decreased blood lipid profile parameters and the numbers of monocytes and eosinophils and increased total protein, globulin, haemoglobin (Hb) and lymphocyte levels compared to the control treatment. The Dokki-4 strain showed significantly higher antibody titres against avian influenza virus (AIV) (p < 0.05) and sheep red blood cells (SRBCs) (p < 0.0001) than the El-Salam strain and RJ injection enhanced antibody titres against AIV, Newcastle disease virus (NDV) and SRBCs. Therefore, the Dokki-4 strain was superior to the El-Salam strain for the tested parameters and injection with 0.5 mL RJ/egg produced the best hatching parameters, growth performance and health-related traits. RJ in ovo injection was much more effective in the Dokki-4 strain than in the El-Salam strain, which supported the hypothesis of the study that varying the chicken strain could alter the response to the in ovo injection with RJ.
