Building a Pluriverse of Nursologies: A paradigm for decolonial theory and knowledge development in nursing

The imperative to decolonise health disciplines underscores the need for a critical examination of the coloniality of nursing knowledge development. Decolonising nursing requires epistemic resistance aimed at exposing and dismantling epistemological hierarchies that marginalise indigenous knowledges. This paper introduces the 'Pluriverse of Nursologies' as paradigm to guide decolonial theorising in nursing. Through a four-part exploration, I first elucidate the coloniality embedded in mainstream nursing knowledge. Next, I offer a decolonial critique of Fawcett's nursing metaparadigm as an exemplar of pyramidal epistemology. I then discuss pluriversality as an approach to decolonising nursing knowledge. Finally, I introduce the Pluriverse of Nursologies (PoN) as a meta-theoretical paradigm for theory and knowledge development that decentres and dismantles the pyramidal epistemology of colonial/modern nursing, and relinks diverse nursologies from marginalised communities to the centre of intellectual nursing discourse, thereby revitalising the theoretical landscape of the discipline.

Building a programme theory of a specialist paediatric palliative and hospice care programme: development process and methodological reflection

BACKGROUND

Paediatric palliative and hospice care aims to improve the quality of life of children with life-limiting and life-threatening conditions and their families. The number of these patients has risen significantly in recent years, resulting in an increased need for palliative care for this population. Although the need for paediatric palliative and hospice care is growing, meaningful outcome evaluation to demonstrate its effectiveness as a complex healthcare intervention is in its early stages. For complex interventions (programmes), theory-based evaluations have grown in prominence in recent years. They seek to understand how and why an intervention works by uncovering its underlying mechanisms by means of programme theory. To support both outcome evaluation in paediatric palliative care and a reflective practice of programme theorizing, we aimed to describe the construction of a programme theory for a specialist paediatric palliative and hospice care programme in Austria and to offer a reflective account of its development process.

METHODS

We drew on a combination of theory-based evaluation frameworks to construct a programme theory consisting of an action and a change component. Through multiple iterations, incorporating different stakeholders' perspectives and drawing on different sources of knowledge and theory, we theorized how and why the programme likely achieves its intended outcomes.

RESULTS

The programme theory outlines the proposed chains of events, causal mechanisms and outcomes of a specialist paediatric palliative and hospice care programme for children and families in several areas corresponding to its main conceptual tenets. Through a range of activities and interventions, the programme triggers coping and adaptation mechanisms that ultimately contribute to family and child wellbeing in physical, psychological, social, and spiritual dimensions. Established trust and partnership between children/families and healthcare professionals as well as a person-centered and family-centered approach were identified as enabling factors.

CONCLUSIONS

Our findings provide insights into how a specialized paediatric palliative and hospice care programme works to achieve its intended outcomes for children and families. This helps demonstrate its impact, contributing to meaningful outcome evaluation and service improvement.

Deconstructing nursing's paradoxical relationship with the concept of complexity

Although nursing seems to understand itself and its practice as complex, the literature is less clear about what this actually means. While complexity is discussed as an attribute of nursing, it is also suggested that complexity in nursing remains misunderstood and poorly articulated, is devalued, is not considered as a measure of health outcomes and remains invisible. Despite the overarching lack of a definition, some nurse scholars have conceptualized complexity as a complex intervention. For these authors, complexity becomes a complex intervention defined as that which is composed of component parts interacting in a variety of ways that influence the delivery of and outcomes of health-related interventions for populations. Conceptualizing complexity as a complex intervention forces nursing to embrace and adopt a received interpretation of complexity as expressed through complexity theory and complexity science. While complexity theory may afford us some tools for thinking about complexity, when we deconstruct nursing complexity to explicitly determinate and quantifiable tasks, this artificially narrowed orientation to complexity reveals an oversimplified explanation of the complexities associated with nursing and serves to blind us to its real qualities. Through a consideration of complexity from a Western philosophical tradition, I demonstrate that when nursing adopts the received interpretation of complexity as a complex intervention, this perspective on complexity contains nursing epistemologically and ontologically. I offer an extended conceptualization of complexity framed upon the consideration that nurses assume complexity and do not reduce it; that nurses have the capacity to not be paralysed by complexity and have developed logics to mobilize it in productive ways. Mobilizing complexity through navigating paradox and contradiction shapes an orientation to complexity that embraces an extended epistemology. This extended epistemology is characterized by a 'yes/and' mindset that expresses the dynamic and generative relationship between forms of knowledge which reflects complexity that characterizes nursing.

Embracing Paradigmatic Diversity in Nursing: The Stadium Model in Nursing

Arguably, the quest for a central, unifying paradigm in nursing has distracted from moving disciplinary knowledge forward in an accessible, meaningful manner. In this discursive philosophical article, we uphold that multiparadigmatic research teams and diverse approaches inform effective nursing praxis. We provide an overview of our worldviews (dialectical pluralism, critical realism, humanism, and pragmatism) and their philosophical assumptions and describe how they are commensurate with nursing. We present the Stadium Model in Nursing as a metaphor to illustrate how various worldviews function like different sections of a stadium to offer diverse, yet important vantages of our nursing phenomena of interest.

Reassembling nursing in the digital age: An actor-network theory perspective

This article explores the application of actor-network theory (ANT) to the nursing profession, proposing a novel perspective in understanding nursing in the context of modern digital healthcare. Traditional grand nursing theories, while foundational, often fail to encapsulate the dynamic and complex nature of nursing, particularly in an era of rapid technological advancements and shifting societal dynamics. ANT, with its emphasis on the relationships between human and nonhuman actors, offers a framework to understand nursing beyond traditional paradigms. This article makes two key arguments: first, that nursing can be viewed as a highly organised social assemblage, where both human (nurses, patients and policymakers) and nonhuman actors (technologies, medical equipment, institutional policies) play a crucial role, and second, that ANT can be used to enhance existing nursing theory to better understand the role of technology in nursing practice. The article considers how ANT can provide a more holistic and adaptable model for describing the nursing profession, particularly in an era where technology plays an integral role in healthcare delivery. It discusses the implications of viewing nursing through ANT, highlighting the need for nursing education and practice to adapt to the interconnected and technologically advanced nature of modern healthcare. The article also acknowledges the limitations of ANT, particularly its potential oversimplification of the complex ethical dimensions inherent in nursing and its focus on observable phenomena.

[For transdisciplinarity in nursing]

In the 1960s, the integration of nursing training into university led to the development of theories specific to the discipline. Although described as "nursing-specific", these theories have significant conceptual shortcomings. Since 1990, interdisciplinary approaches have been emerging to enrich nursing practice and theory. Today, it is crucial to adopt a transdisciplinary approach in order to respond effectively to current and future healthcare needs.

Perspective of radiography science - a document analysis of dissertations

INTRODUCTION

The aim of this study was to clarify the perspective of radiography science as an academic discipline. A discipline can be studied by discovering the collective use of concepts, especially core concepts. We have previously identified the core concepts as clinical practices in radiography, radiographers' profession, safe and high-quality radiation use, and technology in radiography. The relationships between these concepts have not been studied previously. In order to clarify the perspective of radiography science we have investigated further the core concepts, their interrelationships and interdependencies.

METHODS

Altogether, 53 dissertations meeting the inclusion criteria were selected for a qualitative document analysis. The data were first analysed deductively using an extraction matrix comprising four core concepts developed from previous studies, then relational statements were synthesised, and the statements were analysed semantically.

RESULTS

Analysis revealed the bilateral interrelationships between the concepts and their dependencies. All the concepts were used within healthcare. The rationale for radiography science research was the clinical practice of radiography and the improvement of services in a complex environment as a part of patients' pathways. Safe and high-quality radiation use was investigated as a means to deliver optimal services. Technology was studied as being functional or a means to deliver services. The perspective of the discipline was seen as the combination of humanistic interaction with advanced technology, where safety and quality were a necessity.

CONCLUSIONS

Defining core concepts and their interrelations clarifies the perspective of the discipline and gives radiography researchers a way to argue their viewpoint.

Board talk: How members of executive hospital boards influence the positioning of nursing in crisis through talk

Talk by members of executive hospital boards influences the organizational positioning of nurses. Talk is a relational leadership practice. Using a qualitative-interpretive design we organized focus group meetings wherein members of executive hospital boards (7), nurses (14), physicians (7), and managers (6), from 15 Dutch hospitals, discussed the organizational positioning of nursing during COVID crisis. We found that members of executive hospital boards consider the positioning of nursing in crisis a task of nurses themselves and not as a collective, interdependent, and/or specific board responsibility. Furthermore, members of executive hospital boards talk about the nursing profession as (1) more practical than strategic, (2) ambiguous in positioning, and (3) distinctive from the medical profession. Such talk seemingly contrasts with the notion of interdependence that highlights how actors depend on each other in interaction. Interdependence is central to collaboration in hospital crises. In this paper, therefore, we depart from the members of executive hospital boards as leader and "positioner," and focus on talk-as a discursive leadership practice-to illuminate leadership and governance in hospitals in crisis, as social, interdependent processes.

Exploring Wellness Through Concept Analysis

Modern wellness is a concept that has been discussed in the literature since the 1960's. To better understand wellness complexities in a school setting, a concept analysis was conducted using a modified version of Walker and Avant's method incorporating the nursing paradigm in the implications. A literature review was conducted and except for background information, the publication dates were limited to 2017-2022. Key search terms included "wellness," "school wellness," "wellness concept." Additional literature reviews were conducted based on data related to the definitions, attributes, antecedents, and consequences of wellness that were collected from the reviewed studies. Defining attributes of wellness included healthy habits, conscientiousness, and optimum state of health. The antecedents, consequences, and empirical referents of wellness were identified with examples from the literature and case exemplars. Wellness is a dynamic process that has unique implications for school health and school nurses. This concept analysis lays the foundation for future research incorporating nursing domains.

COVID-19 Pandemic: From Population Need to Professional Nursing Competence

Nursing has proven to be an essential healthcare profession, especially in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic crisis. In this chapter, it shows the essential aspects of the discipline of care and its application in the face of the pandemic from an Informatics Nursing approach. The conceptual bases include the conception of care and its historical evolution. Thus, the Personal Care Knowledge Model, the clinical care sequence and its standardized languages allow Taxonomic Triangulation to be developed. Taxonomic Triangulation is a technique created by nurses that allows managing information and that served to extract knowledge from documents and clinical experiences. The application of this vision of care and its knowledge management models have been tested in different situations: from the identification of care diagnoses in a World Health Organization clinical guide to the design of a care plan manual in a hospital. On the other hand, a secondary result is the resilience shown by the nurses. A resilience based on theoretical models centered on the person and on a language that can represent life from care. In addition, nursing includes a comprehensive perspective that addresses the emotional and spiritual area. In conclusion, nurses and their specialization with skills in knowledge management allow giving visibility to care. A professional care whose purpose is to improve health systems through solutions based on care so that people can achieve their best health situation.

Technology: A metaparadigm concept of nursing

Undoubtedly, technology continues to permeate the world at an unprecedented pace. The discipline of nursing is not alien to this phenomenon as nurses continue to employ various technological objects and applications in clinical practice, education, administration and research. Despite the centrality of technology in nursing, it has not been recognised as a metaparadigm domain of interest in the discipline of nursing. Thus, this paper sought to examine if technology truly reflected a metaparadigm domain using the four requirements posited by Fawcett. Using these requirements, we examined the onto-epistemology of technology in relation to nursing and conclude that technology potentially represents a distinct domain that intersects with nursing (particularly, from the humanities perspective). Also, technology encompasses some phenomena of interest to the discipline of nursing, demonstrates perspective-neutrality, and is international in scope and substance albeit with some nuances which do not fit well with nursing onto-epistemology. Put together, it is highlighted that technology intersects with the existing metaparadigm domains (person, health, environment and nursing) which positions it as a potential phenomenon of interest to the discipline of nursing requiring further work to articulate its position and role.

Reflections on the relational ontology of medical assistance in dying

Canadian nursing practice has been profoundly influenced by the legalization of medical assistance in dying in 2016, requiring that nurses navigate new and sometimes highly challenging experiences. Findings from our longitudinal studies of nurses' experiences suggest that these include deep emotional responses to medical assistance in dying, an urgency in orchestrating the perfect death, and a high degree of relational impact, both professionally and personally. Here we propose a theoretical explanation for these experiences based upon a relational ontology. Drawing upon the work of Wildman, we understand a relational ontology to be one in which relationships are more fundamentally central than the conceptual entities that provide the context to practice. It is in a relationship that conceptual entities, and their affiliated values, are created and recreated. Seen as causal, relationships have ontological status, with important implications for how we consider the concepts of death, suffering, and time in this context. From a conceptual perspective, suffering is primarily self-defined based upon personal histories, time reflects the potential remaining until death, and death is primarily biological and amoral, although social discourses of a good and bad death surround the death trajectory. However, within a relational ontology of medical assistance in dying, these understandings shift. Death becomes primarily social rather than biological, suffering is shared, and time until death is now clearly delimited. Accordingly, nurses assume a profound responsibility for influencing outcomes that are authentically person-centered. These understandings provide important insights into nurses' experiences, enabling us to recognize the causal effects, both intended and unintended, of nurses' relational practices amidst the complexities of assisted death. Drawing on such a perspective, we find implications for how we provide spaces for nurses to reflect on, and have conversations about, their experiences with some of the greatest mysteries of life-death, suffering, and time.

Climate Change, Environmental Health, and Challenges for Nursing Discipline

Current data and scientific predictions about the consequences of climate change are accurate in suggesting disaster. Since 2019, climate change has become a threat to human health, and major consequences on health and health systems are already observed. Climate change is a central concern for the nursing discipline, even though nursing theorists' understanding of the environment has led to problematic gaps that impact the current context. Today, nursing discipline is facing new challenges. Nurses are strategically placed to respond to the impacts of climate change through their practice, research, and training in developing, implementing, and sustaining innovation towards climate change mitigation and adaptation. It is urgent for them to adapt their practice to this reality to become agents of change.

A Conceptual Model for Professional Identity in Nursing: An Interdependent Perspective

The purpose of this initiative was to define the development, verification, and evolution of the conceptual model for Professional Identity in Nursing. This action research design occurred over two phases, utilizing observations, a modified Norris process for model development, and focus groups. Analysis consisted of conventional content analysis and the Fawcett method for conceptual model analysis and evaluation. The model was modified, and results are presented based on the model's philosophical underpinnings, content, socialness, and evolution. The model resonates with nurses both in the United States and internationally. The interdependency shown in the model encourages collaboration, accountability, and sustainability within the profession and society.

Theory-based evaluation and programme theories in nursing: A discussion on the occasion of the updated Medical Research Council (MRC) Framework

Developing and evaluating health interventions for the benefit of patients is notoriously difficult. This also applies to the discipline of nursing, owing to the complexity of nursing interventions. Following significant revision, the updated guidance of the Medical Research Council (MRC) adopts a pluralistic view to intervention development and evaluation, including a theory-based perspective. This perspective promotes the use of program theory, aiming to understand how and under what circumstances interventions lead to change. In this discussion paper, we reflect the recommended use of program theory in the context of evaluation studies addressing complex nursing interventions. First, we review the literature by investigating the question whether and how evaluation studies targeting complex interventions used theory and to what extent program theories may contribute to enhance the theoretical foundations of intervention studies in nursing. Second, we illustrate the nature of theory-based evaluation and program theories. Third, we argue how this may impact theory building in nursing in general. We finish by discussing which resources, skills and competencies are necessary to fulfill the demanding task of undertaking theory-based evaluations. We caution against an oversimplified interpretation of the updated MRC guidance regarding the theory-based perspective, e.g. by using simple linear logic models, rather than articulating program theories. Instead, we encourage researchers to embrace the corresponding methodology, i.e. theory-based evaluation. With the prevailing perspective of knowledge production in crisis, we might be on the verge of a paradigm shift in health intervention research. Viewed through this lens, the updated MRC guidance could lead to a renewed understanding of what constitutes useful knowledge in nursing. This may facilitate knowledge production and, thereby, contribute to improve nursing practice for the benefit of the patient.

Revisiting the nursing metaparadigm: Acknowledging technology as foundational to progressing nursing knowledge

The nursing metaparadigm, as described by Fawcett in 1984, includes human, health, nursing, and the environment, all of which support theory development by giving direction to our focus as a scientific body. Nursing scientists make their mark in biotechnological applications, mobile health, informatics, and human factors research. We give voice to the patient through design feedback and incorporating technological advancements in our evolving nursing knowledge; however, we have not formally acknowledged technology in our metaparadigm. To continue patient-centered care in this age where machines are enmeshed in daily human life, we propose technology must be a domain of the metaparadigm to continue advancing nursing science and knowledge. In this paper, we propose a separate domain of technology within the metaparadigm to challenge nurses to consider approaches within their research and practice of how technology will impact patient care and their personal development within the profession. A technology-specific domain within the metaparadigm also is a signal to other bodies of science of our willingness and ability to run at pace with novel, exciting new discoveries while adding our perspective. Nurses may become active agents in novel developments rather than passive adopters, continuing our legacy of patient advocacy through new knowledge generation. Emerging and continuing nurse leadership has set the stage for the next era of nurse-led innovation and technology development, which provides an opportunity to embed technology as a core aspect of the nursing metaparadigm.

Use of Nursing Concepts in Program and Course Descriptions: An Analysis of Prelicensure Baccalaureate Nursing Programs in the United States

BACKGROUND

Ongoing discussions address how and when to introduce nursing concepts in nursing education.

PURPOSE

To examine whether baccalaureate nursing programs use 4 nursing concepts in their program and course descriptions.

METHODS

Researchers explored websites of 300 US bachelor of science in nursing (BSN) programs and assigned scores based on how many of 4 nursing concepts (context, holism, health, and caring) were represented in program and 3 course descriptions.

RESULTS

Mean program and course scores were 2.51, 0.96, 1.17, and 1.18, respectively. Programs and courses included between 0 and 4 concepts in their descriptions. There was a significant difference in program scores between BSN programs in 4 US regions. The most frequently identified concept was "context" in program descriptions and "holism" in course descriptions.

CONCLUSIONS

Discipline-specific concepts are missing in many baccalaureate programs and course descriptions, which raises questions about how and when nursing students are learning what nursing is.

Teaching the Subject of Nursing—Academic Teaching Based on Dossey's Holistic Nursing Theory

To investigate if it is possible to apply Dossey's holistic nursing theory into the context of teaching the subject of nursing.

This article proposes that Dosseys holistic nursing theory could be applied in the context of nursing education.

Development of an evidence-based care bundle protocol for preventing falls in hospitalized children: Delphi study and trial test

AIM

The aim of the study was to develop an evidence-based care bundle protocol for preventing falls in hospitalized children.

DESIGN

Delphi method.

METHODS

Based on the four basic concepts of nursing, the theoretical dimension and item pool of the care bundle first draft were constructed by searching evidence and referring to the care bundle for preventing inpatient fall issues by the China Nursing Quality Promotion Alliance. The Delphi method and trial tests were used to select and adjust items of the care bundle to form the care bundle protocol for preventing falls in hospitalized children.

RESULTS

The first draft care bundle for preventing falls in hospitalized children included 4 dimensions and 21 items. In the 2-round Delphi study, one item was removed, and three items were adjusted. One item was adjusted by trial test. Finally, the care bundle protocol for preventing falls in hospitalized children consisted of 4 dimensions and 20 items.

Hodges' model: the Sustainable Development Goals and public health - universal health coverage demands a universal framework

Background to issue

Future sustainable healthcare delivery and systems need reflective practitioners and critical thinkers to engage the public to achieve health policy aims and objectives. Therefore, this descriptive review introduces a generic conceptual framework, adopting a specific theme to illustrate and demonstrate a model of care or any other context. Whatever the purpose, context or philosophical stance in healthcare and health literacy, there is no standardised generic conceptual framework to structure reflection and critical thinking. This work presents a pragmatic solution focused on the one-to-one relationship of learner-mentor, patient-clinician, public health professional-public and groups.

Methods

The method is constructivist, an educational exercise, practical and the target group can be defined/viewed as student, teacher, patient, carer or member of the public in a health promotion campaign, for example. The building blocks are health and care concepts that arise clinically in practice, or for a student writing an assignment. As will be explained, concepts (including the Sustainable Development Goals) are assigned by the subject(s)-in this instance the authors-to a domain of knowledge.

Results

As two-by-two tables, the results represent the structure of the conceptual framework, framing the content in a series of four knowledge (care) domains. The contents, ultimately the Sustainable Development Goals, may then be linked and relationships discussed. Results are produced gradually, building a cognitive or mind-map. The results, it must be stressed, are therefore qualitative.

Conclusion

Drawing on educational theory and practice, the results are explored and justified using the theme of nutrition, and the often stated desirability in education of reflective practice and critical thinking abilities. Providing a series of cross-disciplinary, the reader will gain insight into the potential of Hodges' model to facilitate integrated, person-centred and care that improves parity of esteem, supporting students and qualified personnel in their learning careers.

IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING

Suicide research based on a Newtonian worldview can have negative consequences for suicide knowledge development and can permeate nursing practice in ways that take away from addressing the complex needs of patients, their families and healthcare teams.

CONCLUSION

A Newtonian worldview as a philosophical basis for research is insufficient for the study of a phenomenon as complex as suicide. A complexity science approach is better suited to the study of suicide given the multiple, interrelated, emerging factors that can contribute to a person's decision to end their own life.

IMPACT

Suggestions are provided as to how a complexity science approach to the research of suicide can inform useful knowledge development that better meets the needs of individuals facing suicidality and their families. Researchers, healthcare administrators and nurses providing care to those struggling with suicidality can benefit from adopting a complexity science worldview in addressing this multifaceted phenomenon.

Theoretical Study Theory of professional bonds: description and theoretical analysis based on the Meleis' model with Delphi strategy

The objective of this study was to evaluate the Theory of Professional Bonds from the description and analysis steps of Meleis' theory evaluation model. This is a theoretical, analytical, and philosophical study, with the collection of manuscripts through literature review to deepen knowledge regarding the origin, the theoretical and philosophical frameworks, and the practical application of the Theory of Professional Bonds. The study was developed in two steps: procedures for the evaluation using the model proposed by Meleis' and procedures for validation of the evaluation using the Delphi strategy and the Likert scale. Descriptive-reflective analysis involves an impartial and detailed examination of the theory, and it is possible to define the scope for a middle-range theory based on Leontiev's Activity Theory. Concepts are defined, delimited and interrelated. It is possible to transcend its applicability from the nursing team to the interdisciplinary team. The theory evaluation advanced by reaffirming the importance of theory to practice and identifying potential for theoretical development, contributing to the elaboration of an unprecedented guideline for theoretical nursing studies.

Altruism in nursing from 2012 to 2022: A scoping review

BACKGROUND

Being a nurse with non-altruistic orientation exists and altruism decline is being challenged as never before, which would be a disaster for medicine if left unnoticed.

PURPOSE

To describe the meaning of altruism and altruistic behaviors in nursing, and to discuss dilemmas we face today.

METHOD

Cochrane, PROSPERO, PubMed, Web of Science, CINAHL, Scopus, Embase, ProQuest, and CNKI were searched for original research published in English or Chinese from 2012 to February 2022.

RESULTS

By screening 13 studies came from 12 different countries described altruism and altruistic behavior together were included in. Altruism has been described as value, vocation, or professionalism in nursing which can reflect nurses' compassion, level of expertise, and quality of care. Altruistic nursing care, body donation, financial endowment, volunteering, sharing, benefiting patients maximum, and helping colleagues represented most of the altruistic behaviors in nursing. There is a vacant that not any assessment tool designed for measuring altruism in nurse groups. Interventions from curriculums in class and support of organizations with psychological methods could be helpful to improve the nurses' level of altruism.

CONCLUSION

Altruism and altruistic behaviors in the past decades were described. A new concept of altruism in nursing was proposed based on the original meaning and the current changes, and interventions for promoting altruism and some of the dilemmas faced today were synthesized.

Conscience and conscientious objection in nursing: A personalist bioethics approach

The ability of nurses to act as moral agents in accordance with their conscience is both an essential human freedom and an important part of professional ethics. Recent developments in Canada related to Medical Assistance in Dying have revealed new and important challenges related to conscientious objection - challenges that may require rethinking of how nurses do professional ethics. Notably, the inclusion of a personalist bioethical approach is needed to introduce and explicate what conscience is for nurses to be able to apply it to nursing practice. In this article, we explore the importance of conscience and conscientious objection as ethical concepts to support nurses in addressing issues of conscience amid ethically challenging situations. We discuss how a personalist basis for conscience can support nurses to inclusively engage with one another across diverse moral perspectives.

The role of philosophy in the development and practice of nursing: Past, present and future

This article summarizes a virtual live-streamed panel event that occurred in August 2020 and was cosponsored by the International Philosophy of Nursing Society (IPONS) and the University of California, Irvine's Center for Nursing Philosophy. The event consisted of a series of three self-contained panel discussions focusing on the past, present and future of IPONS and was moderated by the current Chair of IPONS, Catherine Green. The first panel discussion explored the history of IPONS and the journal Nursing Philosophy. The second panel involved a reflection on the challenges of doing nursing philosophy in a research-intensive context of a Canadian university and the history and current movements in nursing philosophy in the Nordic countries. The final panel involved presentations on the future potential for philosophy in/and for nursing, the critical connections between nursing philosophy and nursing theory, dismantling racism in nursing and the potential for process philosophy to help explore nursing's unique efficacy in creating possibilities for health. The panels were followed by a lively Q&A session with participants, of which there were 252 registrants from across the globe. The event underscored the wide and diverse interests of nurses in philosophical discussion and the need for more virtual events and other connective modalities bringing nurses together to discuss and analyze the value and potential of philosophy to better understand and advance nursing theory and practice.

Analysis of the Theory of Integrative Nurse Coaching

The Theory of Integrative Nurse Coaching (TINC) has been analyzed according to the method of Walker and Avant. We have found that TINC is a well-constructed mid-range theory in the discipline of nursing. Within the domain of holistic nursing, it is focused on the goal of healing the whole person, synthesizing a large amount of theoretical material related to the concept of healing and placing it within the context of nursing as a discipline. With underpinnings in holistic nursing, it aligns with numerous grand nursing theories via the metaparadigm, healing, and patterns of knowing. It is easily translated into holistic nursing practice, actualized in the role of the nurse coach. It describes a method of holistic nursing practice that is suitable for use in numerous settings, including lifestyle, chronic disease, and end of life, among others. Although there is little published research using the theory, there is potential for application in holistic nursing practice, education, research, policy, and administration. We have identified numerous potential research questions that would test the theory. In this time of global nursing shortage and burnout, it is notable that this mid-range theory explicitly describes how self-care of the nurse enhances client care.

Critical Analysis of the Nursing Metaparadigm in Spanish-Speaking Countries: Is the Nursing Metaparadigm Universal?

This critical analysis examines the definitions of concepts in the nursing metaparadigm presented in English language literature in relation to the perspective of published Spanish-speaking nurse researchers in Spanish-speaking countries. Because language shapes our understanding, nurses who are taught in Spanish to become nurses possess a distinctive disciplinary perspective, based on the notion of nursing as the science of caring. This article is intended to facilitate an awareness with which researchers can overcome language barriers in theoretical development. For settings in which English-speaking and Spanish-speaking nurses must work together, sensitivity to differences in linguistic nuances is important.

A new conceptualization of the nurse-patient relationship construct as caring interaction

The journey through the history of nursing, and its philosophical and political influences of the moment, contextualizes the interest that arose about the nurse-patient relationship after World War II. The concept has always been defined as a relationship but, from a phenomenological approach based on a historical, philosophical, psychological and sociological cosmology, it is possible to re-conceptualize it as 'caring interaction'. Under the vision of aesthetics and sociopoetics, the object of nursing care is the most delicate, vulnerable and unrepeatable raw material: the person, whose feelings and reciprocity, which must be considered. In addition, it involves the adoption of the socio-critical paradigm, as it considers the importance of actively involving the person, not just patient anymore, or their family in the nursing cares, optimizing the reciprocity inherent to this interactivity. In short, our philosophical and epistemological approach to the concept of nurse-patient relationship proposes a new conceptualization of it as a caring interaction.

The state of mixed methods research in nursing: A focused mapping review and synthesis

DATA SOURCES

Five purposively selected journals: International Journal of Nursing Studies, Journal of Nursing Scholarship, Journal of Advanced Nursing, Worldviews on Evidence-Based Nursing, and Journal of Mixed Methods Research.

REVIEW METHODS

In the target journals, titles and abstracts from papers published between 2015-2018 were searched for the words or derivative words 'mixed methods'. Additional keyword searches were undertaken using each journal's search tool. We included studies that investigated nursing and reported to use a mixed methods approach. Articles that met the inclusion criteria were read in full and information was extracted onto a predetermined pro forma. Findings across journals were then synthesized to illustrate the current state of mixed methods research in nursing.

RESULTS

We located 34 articles that reported on mixed methods research, conducted across 18 countries. Articles differed significantly both within and across journals in terms of conformity to a mixed methods approach. We assessed the studies for the quality of their reporting as regard the use of mixed methods. Nineteen studies were rated as satisfactory or good, with 15 rated as poorly described. Primarily, a poor rating was due to the absence of stating an underpinning methodological approach to the study and/or limited detail of a crucial integration phase.

CONCLUSIONS

Our FMRS revealed a paucity of published mixed methods research in the journals selected. When they are published, there are limitations in the detail given to the underpinning methodological approach and theoretical explanation.

Nursing's metaparadigm, climate change and planetary health

This paper offers a theoretical discussion on why the nursing profession has had a delayed response to the issue of climate change. We suggest this delay may have been influenced by the early days of nursing's professionalization. Specifically, we examine nursing's professional mandate, the generally accepted metaparadigm, and the grand theorists' conceptualizations of both the environment and the nurse-environment relationship. We conclude that these works may have encouraged nurses to conceptualize the environment, as well as their relationship with it, mainly in terms of the individual patient, and as such, nurses have not been encouraged to understand these concepts from a broader perspective. By not having the philosophical and theoretical foundations to understand the environment in relation to society, it is not surprising that nurses have had a delayed response to climate change and may not have viewed it as a professional concern. A planetary health perspective is suggested as a theoretical basis for nursing education, research and practice. Taking on a planetary health perspective could help nurses progress the profession and move healthcare systems towards supporting a climate-resilient future.

Constructing Good Nursing Practice for Medical Assistance in Dying in Canada: An Interpretive Descriptive Study

Nurses play a central role in Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD) in Canada. However, we know little about nurses' experiences with this new end-of-life option. The purpose of this study was to explore how nurses construct good nursing practice in the context of MAiD. This was a qualitative interview study using Interpretive Description. Fifty-nine nurses participated in semi-structured telephone interviews. Data were analyzed inductively. The findings illustrated the ways in which nurses constructed artful practice to humanize what was otherwise a medicalized event. Registered nurses and nurse practitioners described creating a person-centered MAiD process that included establishing relationship, planning meticulously, orchestrating the MAiD death, and supporting the family. Nurses in this study illustrated how a nursing gaze focused on relationality crosses the moral divides that characterize MAiD. These findings provide an in-depth look at what constitutes good nursing practice in MAiD that can support the development of best practices.

A nursing metaparadigm perspective of diabetic foot ulcer care

Diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) are a serious complication of diabetes that impact on the patient, their social environment, overall health, and on nursing practice. Nursing scholars have integrated theories on practice to overcome these problems, but a lack of agreement in the available literature acts as a barrier to implementing these in practice. For that reason, using a nursing metaparadigm as a theoretical framework would assist nurses in managing care purposefully and proactively, thus possibly improving outcomes. There has been little discussion about the nursing metaparadigm in relation to DFU care. This article aims to identify why Fawcett's theory of the nursing metaparadigm is important as a fundamental part of DFU care. Understanding this will help to elucidate the phenomenon of DFUs. Moreover, identifying the elements of the DFU care framework is essential to improve reflective practice and intervention. This article discusses the concept of the nursing metaparadigm and its implications for practice in the care of patients with DFUs.
