Abstract
Transition services-programs that support adolescents and young adults (AYAs) as they move from a child-centered to a more autonomous, adult-orientated healthcare system-have been associated with improved short- and long-term healthcare outcomes. Unfortunately, there is a paucity of evidence exploring transition services within the neurogastroenterology and motility (NGM) field. The overall aim of this article, endorsed by the American Neurogastroenterology and Motility Society and European Society of Neurogastroenterology and Motility, is to promote a discussion about the role of transition services for patients with NGM disorders. The AYAs addressed herein are those who have: (a) a ROME positive disorder of gut-brain interaction (DGBI), (b) a primary or secondary motility disorder (including those with motility disorders that have been surgically managed), or (c) an artificial feeding requirement (parenteral or enteral tube feeding) to manage malnutrition secondary to categories (a) or (b). The issues explored in this position paper include the specific physical and psychological healthcare needs of patients with NGM disorders; key healthcare professionals who should form part of a secondary care NGM transition service; the triadic relationship between healthcare professionals, caregivers, and patients; approaches to selecting patients who may benefit most from transition care; methods to assess transition readiness; and strategies with which to facilitate transfer of care between healthcare professionals. Key areas for future research are also addressed, including the construction of NGM-specific transition readiness questionnaires, tools to assess post-transfer healthcare outcomes, and educational programs to train healthcare professionals about transition care in NGM.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Orthorexia, a harmful obsession with eating healthily, may develop from illnesses characterized by dietary restriction, including irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and eating disorders (ED). Evidence of disordered eating in IBS exists, but orthorexia has not been assessed. This cross-sectional study in adults (≥18 years) assessed presence and characteristics of disordered eating and orthorexia in IBS, compared to control subjects (CS) and ED. METHODS IBS participants met Rome IV, and ED participants met DSM-5 criteria. Disordered eating was assessed using "sick, control, one-stone, fat, food" (SCOFF, ≥2 indicating disordered eating), and orthorexia by the eating habits questionnaire (EHQ). Secondary measures included stress (PSS); anxiety (HADS-A); food-related quality of life (Fr-QoL), and dietary intake (CNAQ). KEY RESULTS In 202 IBS (192 female), 34 ED (34 female), and 109 CS (90 female), more IBS (33%) and ED (47%) scored SCOFF≥2 compared to CS (16%, p < 0.001, chi-square). IBS and ED had higher orthorexia symptom severity compared to CS (EHQ IBS 82.9 ± 18.1, ED 90.1 ± 19.6, and CS 73.5 ± 16.9, p < 0.001, one-way ANOVA). IBS and ED did not differ for SCOFF or EHQ (p > 0.05). Those with IBS and disordered eating had higher orthorexia symptom severity (EHQ 78.2 ± 16.6 vs. 92.4 ± 17.5, p < 0.001, independent t-test), worse symptoms (IBS-SSS 211.0 ± 78.4 vs. 244.4 ± 62.5, p = 0.008, Mann-Whitney U test), higher stress (p < 0.001, independent t-test), higher anxiety (p = 0.002, independent t-test), and worse FR-QoL (p < 0.001, independent t-test). CONCLUSIONS AND INFERENCES Disordered eating and orthorexia symptoms occur frequently in IBS, particularly in those with worse gastrointestinal symptoms, higher stress, and anxiety. Clinicians could consider these characteristics when prescribing dietary therapies.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) is common among populations with nutrition-related medical conditions. Less is known about the medical comorbidity/complication frequencies in youth with ARFID. We evaluated the medical comorbidities and metabolic/nutritional markers among female and male youth with full/subthreshold ARFID across the weight spectrum compared with healthy controls (HC). METHOD In youth with full/subthreshold ARFID (n = 100; 49% female) and HC (n = 58; 78% female), we assessed self-reported medical comorbidities via clinician interview and explored abnormalities in metabolic (lipid panel and high-sensitive C-reactive protein [hs-CRP]) and nutritional (25[OH] vitamin D, vitamin B12, and folate) markers. RESULTS Youth with ARFID, compared with HC, were over 10 times as likely to have self-reported gastrointestinal conditions (37% vs. 3%; OR = 21.2; 95% CI = 6.2-112.1) and over two times as likely to have self-reported immune-mediated conditions (42% vs. 24%; OR = 2.3; 95% CI = 1.1-4.9). ARFID, compared with HC, had a four to five times higher frequency of elevated triglycerides (28% vs. 12%; OR = 4.0; 95% CI = 1.7-10.5) and hs-CRP (17% vs. 4%; OR = 5.0; 95% CI = 1.4-27.0) levels. DISCUSSION Self-reported gastrointestinal and certain immune comorbidities were common in ARFID, suggestive of possible bidirectional risk/maintenance factors. Elevated cardiovascular risk markers in ARFID may be a consequence of limited dietary variety marked by high carbohydrate and sugar intake.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Gastrointestinal (GI) disorders are common in patients with eating disorders. However, the temporal relationship between GI and eating disorder symptoms has not been explored. We aimed to evaluate GI disorders among patients with eating disorders, their relative timing, and the relationship between GI diagnoses and eating disorder remission. METHODS We conducted a retrospective analysis of patients with an eating disorder diagnosis who had a GI encounter from 2010 to 2020. GI diagnoses and timing of eating disorder onset were abstracted from chart review. Coders applied DSM-5 criteria for eating disorders at the time of GI consult to determine eating disorder remission status. RESULTS Of 344 patients with an eating disorder diagnosis and GI consult, the majority (255/344, 74.2%) were diagnosed with an eating disorder prior to GI consult (preexisting eating disorder). GI diagnoses categorized as functional/motility disorders were most common among the cohort (57.3%), particularly in those with preexisting eating disorders (62.5%). 113 (44.3%) patients with preexisting eating disorders were not in remission at GI consult, which was associated with being underweight (OR 0.13, 95% CI 0.04-0.46, p < 0.001) and increasing number of GI diagnoses (OR 0.47 per diagnosis, 95% CI 0.26-0.85, p = 0.01). CONCLUSIONS Eating disorder symptoms precede GI consult for most patients, particularly in functional/motility disorders. As almost half of eating disorder patients are not in remission at GI consult. GI providers have an important role in screening for eating disorders. Further prospective research is needed to understand the complex relationship between eating disorders and GI symptoms.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the 2-year course and outcomes of full and subthreshold avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) in youth aged 9 to 23 years at baseline using a prospective longitudinal design to characterize the remission and persistence of ARFID, evaluate diagnostic crossover, and identify predictors of outcome. Greater severity in each ARFID profile-sensory sensitivity, fear of aversive consequences, and lack of interest-was hypothesized to predict greater likelihood of illness persistence, controlling for age, sex, body mass index percentile, ARFID treatment status, and baseline diagnosis. METHOD Participants (N = 100; age range, 9-23 years; 49% female; 91% White) were followed over 2 years. The Pica, ARFID, and Rumination Disorder Interview was used across 3 time points (baseline, year 1, year 2) to measure the severity of each ARFID profile and evaluate illness persistence or remission, and the Eating Disorder Assessment for DSM-5 was used to evaluate diagnostic crossover. RESULTS Across the 2-year follow-up period, half the participants persisted with their original diagnosis, and 3% of participants experienced a diagnostic shift to anorexia nervosa. Greater severity in the sensory sensitivity and lack of interest profiles was associated with higher likelihood of ARFID persistence at year 1 only; greater severity in the fear of aversive consequences profile was associated with higher likelihood of ARFID remission at year 2 only. CONCLUSION Findings underscore the distinctiveness of ARFID from other eating disorders and emphasize its persistence over 2 years. Results also highlight the predictive validity and prognostic value of the ARFID profiles (ie, sensory sensitivity, fear of aversive consequences, lack of interest).

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Disorders of gut-brain interaction (DGBI) are common in patients with hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome/hypermobility spectrum disorder (hEDS/HSD). Food is a known trigger for DGBI symptoms, which often leads to dietary alterations and, increasingly, nutrition support. We aimed to explore dietary behaviors and influencing factors in patients with hEDS/HSD. METHODS In a cross-sectional study, patients with hEDS/HSD were recruited from Ehlers-Danlos Support UK (nontertiary) and tertiary neurogastroenterology clinics to complete questionnaires characterizing the following: dietary behaviors, nutrition support, DGBI (Rome IV), gastrointestinal symptoms, anxiety, depression, avoidant restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID), mast cell activation syndrome, postural tachycardia syndrome (PoTS), and quality of life. We used stepwise logistic regression to ascertain which factors were associated with dietary behaviors and nutrition support. RESULTS Of 680 participants (95% female, median age 39 years), 62.1% altered their diet in the last year and 62.3% regularly skipped meals. Altered diet was associated with the following: reflux symptoms ( P < 0.001), functional dyspepsia ( P = 0.008), reported mast cell activation syndrome ( P < 0.001), and a positive screen for ARFID, specifically fear of eating and low interest ( P < 0.001). Approximately 31.7% of those who altered their diet required nutrition support. The strongest predictor of requiring nutrition support was a positive screen for ARFID, specifically fear of eating (OR: 4.97, 95% CI: 2.09-11.8, P < 0.001). DISCUSSION Altered diet is very common in the patients with hEDS/HSD we studied and influenced by functional dyspepsia, reflux symptoms, and ARFID. Those with ARFID have a 4-fold increased risk of requiring nutrition support, and therefore, it is paramount that psychological support is offered in parallel with dietary support in the management of DGBI in hEDS/HSD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The Nine Item Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID) Screen (NIAS) questionnaire is originally available in English. Given the significant overlap of ARFID-like symptoms in gastrointestinal (GI) diseases, ARFID screening becomes crucial in these patient populations. Consequently, the translation of the NIAS questionnaire into French is necessary for its utilization in French-speaking countries. METHODS Clinical experts in neuro-gastroenterology and dietetics from four medical centres in two French-speaking countries (France and Belgium) took part in a well-structured questionnaire translation procedure. This process involved six steps before final approval: translation from English to French, backward translation, comparison between the original and retranslated versions, testing the translated version on patients, making corrections based on patient feedback, and testing the corrected version on an additional sample of patients. KEY RESULTS The NIAS questionnaire in French (NIAS-Fr) was tested on 18 outpatients across the involved centres. For the majority of native French-speaking patients, the translated questionnaire was well understood and clear. After incorporating two relevant modifications suggested by the patients, the translated questionnaire was approved through testing on an additional sample of patients. CONCLUSIONS AND INFERENCES The involvement of two French-speaking countries was crucial for the harmonization and cultural adaptation of the questionnaire. As a result, the NIAS-Fr is now available for use in 54 French-speaking countries, serving approximately 321 million French speakers across five continents for screening ARFID, for both clinical and research purposes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Patients with symptoms of gastroparesis (Gp) often reduce food intake in attempt to manage their symptoms. Up to 40% of adults with Gp have been reported to have symptoms of a non-body image-based eating disorder, avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID). However, whether ARFID symptoms precede or follow the diagnosis of Gp is unknown. METHODS From January 2021 to January 2022, consecutive adult patients with Gp at an academic center completed self-report surveys for Gp symptom severity (patient assessment of upper gastrointestinal symptoms; PAGI-SYM) and for ARFID (nine-item ARFID screen; NIAS). KEY RESULTS One hundred and seven patients (age 45.4 ± 17.2 yrs, 84.1% female, BMI 26.4 ± 7.3) with Gp (4-h gastric retention 33.5 ± 21.8%) were included. Eighty-two of the 107 Gp patients (77%) screened positive for ARFID. Positive ARFID screen was most often on the NIAS appetite subscale (84%) and fear subscale (76%), with a lower positive screen rate on the picky subscale (45%). Of the Gp who screened positive for ARFID, 38% reported that eating difficulties came after their Gp diagnosis, whereas 17% reported that eating difficulties preceded their Gp diagnosis, and 15% reported that both began at the same time. CONCLUSIONS Many (77%) patients with Gp screened positive for ARFID. In Gp patients with ARFID, the Gp diagnosis was more likely to precede the development of eating difficulties. Thus, a subset of patients with Gp may be at risk for developing ARFID. Further longitudinal research is needed to confirm findings and identify risk factors.

BACKGROUND Avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) is a serious, albeit under-researched, feeding or eating disorder. This exploratory study utilized data from adult respondents to the National Eating Disorders Association online eating disorder screen to validate items assessing the presence of ARFID and examine the prevalence, clinical characteristics, and correlates of a positive ARFID screen. METHODS Among 50,082 adult screen respondents between January 2022 and January 2023, the prevalence of a positive ARFID screen was calculated. Chi-square tests and t-tests compared demographics, eating disorder attitudes and behaviors, suicidal ideation, current eating disorder treatment status, and eating disorder treatment-seeking intentions between respondents with possible ARFID and other eating disorder diagnostic and risk categories. Clinical characteristics of respondents with possible ARFID were also examined. RESULTS 2378 (4.7%) adult respondents screened positive for ARFID. Respondents with possible ARFID tended to be younger, male, and have lower household income, and were less likely to be White and more likely to be Hispanic/Latino than most other diagnostic/risk groups. They had lower weight/shape concerns and eating disorder behaviors than most other diagnoses and higher BMI than those with AN. 35% reported suicidal ideation, 47% reported intentions to seek treatment for an eating disorder, and 2% reported currently being in treatment. The most common clinical feature of ARFID was lack of interest in eating (80%), followed by food sensory avoidance (55%) and avoidance of food due to fear of aversive consequences (31%). CONCLUSIONS Findings from this study indicated that ARFID was prevalent among adult screen respondents and more common among individuals who were younger, male, non-White, Hispanic, and lower income relative to those with other eating disorders, at risk for an eating disorder, or at low risk. Individuals with possible ARFID frequently reported suicidal ideation and were rarely in treatment for an eating disorder. Further research is urgently needed to improve advances in the assessment and treatment of ARFID and improve access to care in order to prevent prolonged illness duration.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) symptoms are common (up to 40%) among adults with functional dyspepsia (FD), a disorder of gut-brain interaction characterized by early satiation, post-prandial fullness, epigastric pain, and/or epigastric burning. Using an 8-session exposure-based cognitive-behavioral treatment (CBT) for adults with FD + ARFID compared to usual care (UC) alone, we aim to: (1) determine feasibility, (2) evaluate change in clinical outcomes in, and (3) explore possible mechanisms of action. METHODS We will randomize adults with FD who meet criteria for ARFID with ≥5% weight loss (N = 50) in a 1:1 ratio to CBT (with continued UC) or to UC alone. A priori primary benchmarks will be: ≥75% eligible participants enroll; ≥75% participants complete assessments; ≥70% participants attend 6/8 sessions; ≥70% of sessions have all content delivered; ≥70% participants rate Client Satisfaction Questionnaire scores above scale midpoint. We will also examine the size of changes in FD symptom severity and related quality of life within and between groups, and explore possible mechanisms of action. CONCLUSIONS Findings from this trial will inform next steps with treatment development or evaluation-either for further refinement or for next-step efficacy testing with a fully-powered clinical trial.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Exposure-based cognitive-behavioral therapy (exposure-CBT) is efficacious for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). However, few patients receive exposure-CBT due to a lack of behavioral health providers trained in brain-gut behavior therapies. Nurse practitioners (NPs) could fill a critical need for scalable delivery methods. In a pragmatic investigation of a 5-session NP-delivered exposure-CBT for adults with Rome IV-defined IBS, we evaluated treatment feasibility and acceptability and explored changes clinical outcomes. METHODS Exposure-CBT was delivered as part of routine care involving four sessions every other week and a 2-month booster session. Patients could electively participate in an observational study including pre-, mid-, and post-treatment surveys and a post-treatment qualitative interview. Independently coded ratings of NP treatment protocol adherence and competence ratings were completed from audio recordings, rated on a 1 (not at all) to 5 (completely) scale. RESULTS Twenty-five patients consented (ages 22-67 years; 76% female; 48% IBS-diarrhea predominant). There was high feasibility-adherence average = 4.1, NP competence average = 4.8, 72% treatment completion, 93% satisfaction scores ≥3. Treatment satisfaction was high (rated as 4/4 "very satisfied" by n = 9 and as 3/4 "mostly satisfied" by n = 5). There were improvements in clinical outcomes across treatment with large effects for IBS-symptom severity (-53%; Hedge's g = 1.0; 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.5, 1.5) and IBS quality of life (+31%; Hedge's g = 0.8; 95% CI = 0.4, 1.2). CONCLUSIONS NP-delivered exposure-CBT for IBS was initially feasible and acceptable with promising clinical improvements. Findings will inform a future NIH Stage 1B/ORBIT Phase IIB pilot randomized control trial.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) symptoms are common (up to 40%) among adults with disorders of gut-brain interaction (DGBI), but treatments for this population (DGBI + ARFID) have yet to be evaluated. We aimed to identify initial feasibility, acceptability, and clinical effects of an exposure-based cognitive-behavioral treatment (CBT) for adults with DGBI + ARFID. METHODS Patients (N = 14) received CBT as part of routine care in an outpatient gastroenterology clinic. A two-part investigation of the CBT included a retrospective evaluation of patients who were offered a flexible (8-10) session length and an observational prospective study of patients who were offered eight sessions. Feasibility benchmarks were ≥75% completion of sessions, quantitative measures (for treatment completers), and qualitative interviews. Acceptability was assessed with a benchmark of ≥70% patients reporting a posttreatment satisfaction scores ≥3 on 1-4 scale and with posttreatment qualitative interviews. Mixed model analysis explored signals of improvement in clinical outcomes. RESULTS All feasibility and acceptability benchmarks were achieved (and qualitative feedback revealed high satisfaction with the treatment and outcomes). There were improvements in clinical outcomes across treatment (all p's < .0001) with large effects for ARFID fear (-52%; Hedge's g = 1.5; 95% CI = 0.6, 2.5) and gastrointestinal-specific anxiety (-42%; Hedge's g = 1.0; 95% CI = 0.5, 16). Among those who needed to gain weight (n = 10), 94%-103% of expected weight gain goals were achieved. DISCUSSION Initial development and testing of a brief 8-session CBT protocol for DGBI + ARFID showed high feasibility, acceptability, and promising clinical improvements. Findings will inform an NIH Stage 1B randomized control trial. PUBLIC SIGNIFICANCE While cognitive-behavioral treatments (CBTs) for ARFID have been created in outpatient feeding and eating disorder clinics, they have yet to be developed and refined for other clinic settings or populations. In line with the recommendations for behavioral treatment development, we conducted a two-part investigation of an exposure-based CBT for a patient population with high rates of ARFID-adults with disorders of gut-brain interaction (also known as functional gastrointestinal disorders). We found patients had high satisfaction with treatment and there were promising improvements for both gastrointestinal and ARFID outcomes. The refined treatment includes eight sessions delivered by a behavioral health care provider and the findings reported in this article will be studied next in an NIH Stage 1B randomized controlled trial.

Abstract
Eating disorders include a spectrum of disordered thinking patterns and behaviours around eating. There is increasing recognition of the bi-directional relationship between eating disorders and gastrointestinal disease. Gastrointestinal symptoms and structural issues might arise from eating disorders, and gastrointestinal disease might be a risk factor for eating disorder development. Cross-sectional research suggests that individuals with eating disorders are disproportionately represented among people seeking care for gastrointestinal symptoms, with avoidant-restrictive food intake disorder in particular garnering attention for high rates among individuals with functional gastrointestinal disorders. This Review aims to describe the research to date on the relationship between gastrointestinal disorders and eating disorders, highlight research gaps, and provide brief, practical guidance for the gastroenterology provider in detecting, potentially preventing, and treating gastrointestinal symptoms in eating disorders.

Abstract
AIMS To understand the experiences and needs of symptom management among individuals with irritable bowel syndrome and concurrent symptoms of anxiety and/or depression. DESIGN This study used a qualitative descriptive research design. METHODS Individuals with a diagnosis of irritable bowel syndrome and concurrent symptoms of anxiety and/or depression participated were recruited through an online ResearchMatch and a listserv. Semi-structured interviews focused on symptoms and experiences with symptom management interventions conducted from June to August 2020. Interviews were transcribed and data were analysed based on thematic analysis. RESULTS Twelve individuals participated in this study; all reported current irritable bowel syndrome and anxiety/depression symptoms. The data analysis cumulated with three themes related to symptom management: (a) irritable bowel syndrome negatively impacts physical and mental well-being; (b) a trial and error approach to symptom management; and (c) challenges with healthcare professionals supporting symptom management including negative interactions with healthcare professionals and lack of nutritional expertize and support. CONCLUSION There is a need for individualized approaches which consider patients' current symptoms of anxiety and depression, previous experiences with the trial-and-error process and consideration for intervention delivery methods. IMPACT There is a limited qualitative research focusing on the experiences of individuals with irritable bowel syndrome and concurrent symptoms of anxiety and/or depression. This research highlights the need for individualized approaches to enhance symptom management that acknowledges patients' psychological state and past negative experiences with providers and prior dietary regimens.

Abstract
The gut microbiota, also known as our "second brain" is an exciting frontier of research across a multitude of health domains. Gut microbes have been implicated in feeding behaviour and obesity, as well as mental health disorders including anxiety and depression, however their role in the development and maintenance of eating disorders (EDs) has only recently been considered. EDs are complex mental health conditions, shaped by a complicated interplay of factors. Perhaps due to an incomplete understanding of the etiology of EDs, treatment remains inadequate with affected individuals likely to face many relapses. The gut microbiota may be a missing piece in understanding the etiology of eating disorders, however more robust scientific inquiry is needed in the field before concrete conclusions can be made. In this spotlight paper, we critically evaluate what is known about the bi-directional relationship between gut microbes and biological processes that are implicated in the development and maintenance of EDs, including physiological functioning, hormones, neurotransmitters, the central nervous system, and the immune system. We outline limitations of current research, propose concrete steps to move the field forward and, hypothesize potential clinical implications of this research. Our gut is inhabited by millions of bacteria which have more recently been referred to as "our second brain". In fact, these microbes are thought to play a role in ED behaviour, associated anxiety and depression, and even affect our weight. Recent research has dove into this field with promising findings that have the potential to be applied clinically to improve ED recovery. The present paper discusses what is known about the gut microbiome in relation to EDs and the promising implications that leveraging this knowledge, through fecal microbiome transplants, probiotics, and microbiome-directed supplemental foods, could have on ED treatment.

Abstract
Disorders of gut-brain interaction (DGBI), formerly termed functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGID), are highly prevalent although exact pathophysiological mechanisms remain unclear. Intestinal immune activation has been recognized, but increasing evidence supports a pivotal role for an active inflammatory state in these disorders. In functional dyspepsia (FD), marked eosinophil and mast cell infiltration has been repeatedly demonstrated and associations with symptoms emphasize the relevance of an eosinophil-mast cell axis in FD pathophysiology. In this Review, we highlight the importance of immune activation in DGBI with a focus on FD. We summarize eosinophil biology in both homeostasis and inflammatory processes. The evidence for immune activation in FD is outlined with attention to alterations on both cellular and molecular level, and how these may contribute to FD symptomatology. As DGBI are complex and multifactorial conditions, we shed light on factors associated to, and potentially influencing immune activation, including bidirectional gut-brain interaction, allergy and the microbiota. Crucial studies reveal a therapeutic benefit of treatments targeting immune activation, suggesting that specific anti-inflammatory therapies could offer renewed hope for at least a subset of DGBI patients. Lastly, we explore the future directions for DGBI research that could advance the field. Taken together, emerging evidence supports the recognition of FD as an immune-mediated organic-based disorder, challenging the paradigm of a strictly functional nature.

Abstract
Purpose of Review The world's population is aging rapidly, with 40% of patients seen in US gastroenterology (GI) clinics being 60 years or older. Many gastrointestinal problems are more common or unique to the older adult because of progressive damage to the structure and function of the GI tract. Until recently, the epidemiology of disorders of gut-brain interaction (such as irritable bowel syndrome and functional dyspepsia) was not well-characterized. Recent Findings Forty percent of persons worldwide have disorders of gut-brain interaction (DGBI), with varying global patterns of incidence in older adults. There are multiple first-line approaches to managing DGBI which can also be combined including pharmacologic (e.g., neuromodulators) and nonpharmacologic approaches including dietary therapies and brain-gut behavioral therapies. However, there are considerations clinicians must account for when offering each approach related to unique biopsychosocial factors in the older adult population. In this review, we aim to critically review recent literature on the pathophysiology, epidemiology, and special considerations for diagnosing and managing DGBI in the older adult population. Summary There have been many advances in the management of DGBI over the past decades. Given the increase in the number of older adults in the USA and worldwide, there is an urgent need for evidence-based guidance to help providers guide comprehensive care for specifically our aging patient population with respect to DGBI.
