Abstract
Adolescence represents a period of opportunity in decision-making as developmental motivations and processes shift, particularly in social contexts. Sibling relationships may be especially influential in adolescent decision-making, as siblings spend a disproportionate amount of time with one another and can affect how adolescents think, feel, and behave. However, the ways in which siblings may shape adolescent decision-making through psychological, behavioral, and neurological processes, particularly their interactions, are less well known. This review introduces the developmental processes approach to understanding adolescent decision-making in the sibling context by reviewing patterns in the literature as to how each developmental process in sibling contexts may contribute to adolescent decision-making. Interdisciplinary collaborations across theories and methods (i.e., surveys, observations, and neuroimaging) can contribute to a more holistic understanding of how siblings may shape adolescent decision-making, for better and for worse. Further, this approach can inform practice through sibling-focused prevention programs and other sibling-focused programming (e.g., government, nonprofit) in promoting adaptive adolescent decision-making.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Participation in everyday activities is beneficial for mental health. However, little is known about the extent to which changes in children's participation are associated with later mental health. OBJECTIVES To investigate the association between changes in the frequency and involvement in home, school, and community activities and subsequent mental health problems in children. Methodology: We recruited 242 school-aged children. Their parents completed the Participation and Environment Measure for Children and Youth twice, and after 2 years, they completed the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire. RESULTS After controlling for demographic factors, hierarchical regression analysis revealed that reductions in children's involvement in home and community activities were significantly associated with elevated levels of externalizing and internalizing problems. Furthermore, an increase in children's involvement in school activities showed significant relationships with better mental health outcomes. CONCLUSION These findings inform participation-based interventions for occupational therapists aimed at mitigating children's future mental health problems.

Abstract
Children's mental health symptoms' development can be characterized by both continuity and discontinuity. However, existing studies ignore the potential discontinuity in children's internalizing symptoms' development. Hence, the current study examines continuous and discontinuous developmental trajectories using representative data from a sample of 2792 children (49.10% females) from the Growing Up in Australia cohort assessed seven times (ages 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16). Longitudinal measurement invariance analyses revealed that internalizing symptoms were comparable over time. Linear, quadratic, and piecewise latent growth curve models were deployed to estimate the trajectory of internalizing symptoms from early childhood to late adolescence. The analyses showed that internalizing symptoms were characterized by a quadratic-quadratic piecewise growth curve comprising two distinct phases of upward concave growth. Internalizing scores reduced steadily between ages 4 and 8 years but exhibited a slight upward curvature between ages 8 and 10 years. By age 14 years, the trajectory remained relatively stable but spiked between age 14 and 16 years. The two phases of internalizing symptoms' development were largely unrelated. Overall, the study adds to the knowledge about the development of internalizing mental health from early childhood to late adolescence and highlights the need for additional support in late adolescence.

Abstract
Background and Aims The COVID-19 pandemic and its accompanying countermeasures significantly disrupt the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of adolescents. We aimed to estimate the status and associated factors related to HRQoL of adolescents during the COVID-19 pandemic from the community population of Bangladesh. Methods This cross-sectional study followed two-stage sampling. From eight administrative divisions of Bangladesh, 2030 adolescents were enrolled. The KIDSCREEN-10 index was used to measure the HRQoL of adolescents. In addition to this, adolescents' data on sociodemographics, mental well-being, parenting style, insomnia, food insecurity, depression, anxiety and stress, resilient coping, screen-based activity, and anthropometry were taken for finding out the factors associated with HRQoL of adolescents. The hierarchical multilinear regression was performed to assess the association. Results More than 47% of adolescents were found to have moderate and high HRQoL, while 4.7% of adolescents experienced low HRQoL during data collection. Higher age (B: -0.671), having more siblings (B: -0.316), food insecurity (B: ‒2.010), depression (B: ‒0.321), anxiety (B: ‒0.362), and stress (B: ‒0.150) were found to have significantly negative associations with adolescents' HRQoL during the COVID-19 pandemic. Whereas, positive parenting (B: 0.409), inconsistent parenting discipline (B: 0.266), good mental health (B: 5.662), resilient coping (B: 0.306) were found to have significant positive relationships. Conclusions The findings from this study indicate that over 52% of the adolescents reported a moderate and lower level of HRQoL. In light of these results, it may be beneficial to prioritize interventions targeting psychological factors such as depression, anxiety, and stress.

Abstract
Objective The measures implemented to control the spread of Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) could affect children's mental and vision health. Youth particularly from minority and socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds were more likely to be impacted by these measures. This study aimed to examine the mental health of children with vision impairment and associated factors in North-western China during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted among 2,036 secondary school children living in Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region. Participants completed a survey on sociodemographic and lifestyle information and answered the Chinese version of the 21-item Depression Anxiety Stress Scales (DASS-21) questionnaire. Presenting visual acuity was measured by a trained enumerator. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to identify potential risk factors for mental health problems. Results Responses from 1,992 (97.8%) children were included in the analysis after excluding those with incomplete mental health outcome data. The prevalence of depression, anxiety and stress symptoms within the dataset were 28.9, 46.4, and 22.3%, respectively. The distribution of children with different stress levels differed significantly between those with and without vision impairment (p = 0.03). Multivariable logistic regression analyses revealed that depression symptoms decreased with higher parental education (OR, 0.76, 95% confidence intervals (CI):0.63-0.96), longer sleep duration (OR, 0.90, 95% CI: 0.81-0.97) and longer study time (OR, 0.82, 95% CI: 0.74-0.91), whereas they increased with higher recreational screen time (OR, 1.19, 95% CI: 1.08-1.32). Anxiety symptoms decreased with higher parental education (OR, 0.80, 95% CI: 0.66-0.96) and increased with higher recreational screen time (OR, 1.15, 95% CI: 1.04-1.27) and being a left-behind child (OR, 1.26, 95% CI: 1.04-1.54). In addition, stress symptoms decreased with longer sleep duration (OR, 0.92, 95%CI: 0.85-0.99) and increased with higher number of siblings (OR, 1.10, 95% CI: 1.01-1.19), higher recreational screen time (OR, 1.15, 95% CI: 1.04-1.28) and older age (OR,1.12, 95% CI: 1.004-1.24). Conclusion A considerable proportion of our sample experienced mental health problems during the pandemic. Healthcare planners in China should consider interventions such as reducing recreational screen time, ensuring sufficient sleep, and timely detection of mental health symptoms among socioeconomically disadvantaged groups.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Having siblings may foster sociality; however, little is known about whether sibling number determines social capital, the resources obtained through social networks. We examined the association between sibling number and social capital among Japanese parents rearing schoolchildren. METHODS We used cross-sectional data from the 2018 and 2019 Adachi Child Health Impact of Living Difficulty (A-CHILD) study, targeting all primary and junior high school students and their parents in Adachi, Tokyo, Japan (n = 8,082). Individual-level social capital was evaluated by assessing caregivers' social cohesion, social support, and group affiliation. All analyses were adjusted for age and sex. RESULTS An inverse U-shaped association was found between sibling number and social capital. Adults who grew up with one or two, but not three or more siblings had greater social support (coefficient = 0.23; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.06-0.40 and coefficient = 0.46; 95% CI, 0.29-0.64, respectively) than those who grew up as an only child, after covariate adjustment. Adults who grew up with two or three, but not one or four or more siblings had greater group affiliation (coefficient = 0.09; 95% CI, 0.03-0.16 and coefficient = 0.09; 95% CI, 0.01-0.18, respectively) than those who grew up as an only child, after covariate adjustment. Sibling number was not associated with social cohesion. CONCLUSION Growing up with one to three siblings was associated with higher social capital in adulthood than being an only child. Having siblings may provide an opportunity to foster social capital.

Abstract
This study examines the cumulative effects of poverty on children's socio-emotional outcomes from ages 5 to 12, using U.S. National Longitudinal Survey of Youth data (N = 6941). Two definitions of poverty were used: absolute poverty as defined by the federal poverty threshold, and relative poverty defined as income less than 50 percent of median household income. (1) Does cumulative poverty, measured in absolute and relative terms, have any impact on children's socio-emotional outcomes? (2) Does this association increase/decrease as children become older? Relative poverty had a stronger adverse effect on children's social-emotional development than absolute poverty, and the adverse effect of relative poverty was bigger when children were older. Child and maternal characteristics affected children's socio-emotional development. The income threshold for absolute poverty is lower than that for relative poverty; using a relative poverty threshold might better identify individuals with limited resources that are at risk of having adverse socio-emotional outcomes.

Abstract
UNLABELLED Children and adolescents are exposed to medicines and supplements, but only a few studies have evaluated the actual intake in routine care. Thus, we performed a pharmacoepidemiological evaluation of a longitudinal population-based pediatric cohort study (LIFE Child) conducted at the University Hospital of Leipzig between 2014 and 2019. We analyzed all visits of the participants of the LIFE Child cohort between 1 January 2014 and 31 December 2019. Participants were asked to bring their medicines and supplements to their appointments at the study center. If they had not brought the preparations with them, attempts were made to obtain the relevant information during a telephone call after the visit to the study center. Furthermore, the participants and their parents were interviewed on medicine and supplement use and on sociodemographic and socioeconomic data during their visit to the study center. Associations of medicine and supplement use with age, sex, and socioeconomic status were analyzed using multivariate binary logistic regressions to obtain adjusted odds ratios (aOR) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CI). Furthermore, the number of the respective visit was included as possible confounder in the multivariate model. We included 3602 participants who visited the study center 11,906 times. The intake of 9759 medicines and supplements was recorded. Based on the evaluation of all study visits, 49% of the children and adolescents took at least one medicine or supplement. Self-medication accounted for 28% of the medicines and supplements. The prevalence of overall intake increased from 45% in 2014 to 53% in 2019 (aOR 2.63, 95% CI 2.23, 3.09). The prevalence was the highest (77%) in children aged 0- < 3 years, owing mainly to vitamin D. The prevalence of medicine use was higher in females (40%; aOR 1.18, 95% CI 1.10, 1.28) than in males (35%), owing mainly to the intake of ibuprofen and hormonal contraceptives in adolescent females. A high socioeconomic status was a predictor of lower medicine (aOR 0.80, 95% CI 0.68, 0.95) and higher supplement (aOR 1.47, 95% CI 1.09, 1.98) use. CONCLUSION Half of all children and adolescents took at least one medicine or supplement. The intake varied depending on age and sex. Furthermore, high socioeconomic status was associated with a decreased probability of medicine intake. WHAT IS KNOWN • Half of all children and adolescents in Germany are exposed to medicines and supplements. • Data on the actual intake are scarce as most studies focus on prescribed medicines. WHAT IS NEW • The prevalence of medicine/supplement use rose from 2014 (45%) to 2019 (53%). The prevalence was age-dependent: it was the highest in children aged < 3 years, and the lowest in children aged 6-< 9 years. Females took medicines more frequently than males. • High socioeconomic status was associated with lower medicine and higher supplement use. Self-medication accounted for 28% of all preparations.

Abstract
PURPOSE To assess the associations between adherence to 24-hour movement behaviors guidelines and child general health and functional status measured by health-related quality of life. METHODS The Longitudinal Study of Australian Children (2004-2016) a nationally representative sample with data available for children aged 2-15 years was used. Physical activity time, recreational screen time, and sleep time were calculated from time use diaries and classified as 'meeting guidelines' or 'not' based on the age-specific 24-h movement guidelines. Child general health and functional status were measured using the multidimensional Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory (PedsQL). Associations between meeting guidelines and PedsQL were assessed using linear mixed effects models. RESULTS 8919 children were included. Each additional guideline met was associated with a 0.52 (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.39-0.65) increase in PedsQL total score. Compared with meeting no guidelines, the effect of meeting physical activity guidelines alone (β = 0.93, 95% CI 0.42-1.44) was larger compared to meeting screen (β = 0.66, 95% CI 0.06-1.27) or sleep time (β = 0.47, 95% CI 0.04-0.89) guidelines alone. The highest increment was observed in meeting both screen time and physical activity guidelines (β = 1.89, 95% CI 1.36-2.43). Associations were stronger in children from lower-income families (β for meeting all versus none = 2.88, 95% CI 1.77-3.99) and children aged 14-15 years (β = 4.44, 95% CI 2.49-6.40). CONCLUSIONS The integration of screen time and physical activity guidelines is associated with the highest PedsQL improvement. The association between guidelines adherence and PedsQL appears stronger for adolescents and those from low-income families.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Studies investigating the prevalence of positive mental health and its correlates are still scarce compared to the studies on mental disorders, although there is growing interest of assessing positive mental health in adolescents. So far, no other study examining the prevalence and determinants of positive mental health in Chinese adolescents has been found. The purpose of this study was to assess the prevalence and correlates of positive mental health in Chinese adolescents. METHODS This cross-sectional study used a questionnaire including Mental Health Continuum-Short Form (MHC-SF) and items regarding multiple aspects of adolescent life. The sample involved a total of 5399 students from grade 8 and 10 in Weifang, China. Multivariate Logistic regression analyses were performed to evaluate the associations between potential indicators regarding socio-economic situations, life style, social support and school life and positive mental health and calculate odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals. RESULTS More than half (57.4%) of the participants were diagnosed as flourishing. The correlated factors of positive mental health in regression models included gender, perceived family economy, the occurrence of sibling(s), satisfaction of self-appearance, physical activity, sleep quality, stress, social trust, desire to learn, support from teachers and parents as well as whether being bullied at school (OR ranging from 1.23 to 2.75). The Hosmer-Lemeshow p-value for the final regression model (0.45) indicated adequate model fit. CONCLUSION This study gives the first overview on prevalence and correlates of positive mental health in Chinese adolescents. The prevalence of positive mental health in Chinese adolescents is higher than reported in most of the previous studies also using MHC-SF. Our findings suggest that adolescents with advantageous socio-economic situations, life style, social support and school life are experiencing better positive mental health than others.
