Abstract
AIM we investigated the effects of a 10 week training program (i.e., minute oscillatory stretching; MOS) on the mechanical responses and walking capability in people with type 2 diabetes (T2D). METHODS seventeen T2D patients performed maximum voluntary contractions of the plantar flexor muscles during which Achilles tendon stiffness (kT) and muscle-tendon stiffness (kM) were evaluated at different percentages of the maximum voluntary force (MVC). In addition, each participant was requested to walk at different walking speeds (i.e. 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 kmh-1) while their net energy cost of walking (Cnet), cumulative EMG activity per distance travelled (CMAPD) and kinematic parameters (step length, step frequency, the ankle/knee range of motion) were evaluated. RESULTS maximum tendon elongation increased after MOS training, and kT significantly decreased (between 0 and 20% of MVC). No differences were observed for muscle elongation or kM after training. Cnet decreased after training (at the slowest tested speeds) while no changes in CMAPD were observed. Step length and ankle ROM during walking increased after training at the slowest tested speeds, while step frequency decreased; no significant effects were observed for knee ROM. CONCLUSION these results indicate the effectiveness of 10 weeks of MOS training in reducing tendon stiffness and the energy cost during walking in people with T2D. This training protocol requires no specific instrumentation, can be easily performed at home, and has a high adherence (92 ± 9%). It could, thus, be useful to mitigate mechanical tendon deterioration and improve physical behaviour in this population.

Abstract

J Strength Cond Res 38(6): 1041-1047, 2024-To date, no studies have experimentally shown a relationship between tendon hysteresis and exercise efficiency. However, previous studies showed that tendon hysteresis decreased immediately after static stretching. The purposes of this study were to (a) investigate the change in tendon hysteresis during the recovery period after static stretching and (b) determine whether exercise efficiency is enhanced because of the decline of tendon hysteresis after static stretching. For stretching (1 minute × 4 sets) and control conditions, tendon hysteresis was measured during ramp (i.e., lower strain rate of tendon) and ballistic (i.e., higher strain rate of tendon) contractions before, immediately, 15, 30, 45, and 60 minutes after interventions. In addition, electromyograms of the plantar flexor muscles (medial gastrocnemius [MG], lateral gastrocnemius [LG], and soleus muscles [SOL]) and oxygen consumption (V̇O 2 ) were measured during 10 minutes of submaximal repetitive jumping after both interventions. Tendon hysteresis (during ramp and ballistic contractions) reduced by static stretching persisted for up to 60 minutes (effect of time p < 0.001). During repetitive jumping, no differences in electromyograms of the plantar flexor muscles (effect of condition p = 0.786 for MG, p = 0.124 for LG, p = 0.682 for SOL) or V̇O 2 (effect of condition p = 0.534) were found between stretching and control conditions. These results suggest that the reduction in tendon hysteresis because of static stretching continues until 60 minutes after the end of stretching, and static stretching does not change the efficiency (evaluated by electromyograms of the plantar flexor muscles and V̇O 2 ) during submaximal repetitive jumping.

Abstract
Instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization (IASTM) stimulates soft subcutaneous tissues by applying pressure to the skin with a specialized bar or spurtle-like instrument. No studies have verified whether several weeks of continuous IASTM alone can alter joint flexibility and musculotendinous properties in healthy participants. We examined the effect of a 6-week IASTM program on joint flexibility and the musculotendinous properties of the lower limbs. Fourteen healthy men (aged 19-35 years) who participated in a 6-week IASTM program (3 days weekly) for the soft tissue of the posterior aspect of one lower leg were included. The other leg served as the control. Before and after the intervention, we measured the maximal ankle joint dorsiflexion angle (dorsiflexion range of motion: DFROM) and maximal passive torque (MPT), a measure of stretch tolerance. We measured muscle and tendon stiffness using shear wave elastography on the gastrocnemius and Achilles tendon. IASTM significantly increased the DFROM and MPT (p < 0.05 for both). However, no significant changes were observed in muscle and tendon stiffness. None of the parameters changed significantly in the control group. The 6-week IASTM program increased stretch tolerance and joint flexibility but did not change muscle and tendon stiffness.

Abstract
Ultrasound 2-D shear wave elastography (US 2D-SWE) is a non-invasive, cost-effective tool for quantifying tissue stiffness. Amidst growing interest in US 2D-SWE for musculoskeletal research, it has been recommended that shear wave velocity (SWV) should be reported instead of elastic moduli to avoid introducing unwanted error into the data. This scoping review examined the evolving use of US 2D-SWE to measure SWV in skeletal muscle and identified strengths and weaknesses to guide future research. We searched electronic databases and key review reference lists to identify articles published between January 2000 and May 2021. Two reviewers assessed the eligibility of records during title/abstract and full-text screening, and one reviewer extracted and coded the data. Sixty-six studies met the eligibility criteria, of which 58 were published in 2017 or later. We found a striking lack of consensus regarding the effects of age and sex on skeletal muscle SWV, and widely variable reliability values. Substantial differences in methodology between studies suggest a pressing need for developing standardized, validated scanning protocols. This scoping review illustrates the breadth of application for US 2D-SWE in musculoskeletal research, and the data synthesis exposed several notable inconsistencies and gaps in current literature that warrant consideration in future studies.

Abstract
Recommendations for prescribing stretching exercises are regularly updated. It appears that coaches progressively follow the published guidelines, but the real stretching practices of athletes are unknown. The present study aimed to investigate stretching practices in individuals from various sports or physical activity programs. A survey was completed online to determine some general aspects of stretching practices. The survey consisted of 32 multiple-choice or open-ended questions to illustrate the general practices of stretching, experiences and reasons for stretching. In total, 3546 questionnaires were analyzed (47.3% women and 52.7% men). Respondents practiced at the national/international level (25.2%), regional level (29.8%), or recreationally (44.9%). Most respondents (89.3%) used stretching for recovery (74.9%) or gains of flexibility (57.2%). Stretching was generally performed after training (72.4%). The respondents also indicated they performed stretching as a pre-exercise routine (for warm-up: 49.9%). Static stretching was primarily used (88.2%) but when applied for warm-up reasons, respondents mostly indicated performing dynamic stretching (86.2%). Only 37.1% of the respondents indicated being supervised. Finally, some gender and practice level differences were noticed. The present survey revealed that the stretching practices were only partly in agreement with recent evidence-based recommendations. The present survey also pointed out the need to improve the supervision of stretching exercises.

Abstract
Increased muscle stiffness of the pectoralis minor (PMi) could deteriorate shoulder function. Stretching is useful for maintaining and improving muscle stiffness in rehabilitation and sport practice. However, the acute and prolonged effect of stretching on the PMi muscle stiffness is unclear due to limited methodology for assessing individual muscle stiffness. Using shear wave elastography, we explored the responses of shear modulus to stretching in the PMi over time. The first experiment (n = 20) aimed to clarify the acute change in the shear modulus during stretching. The shear modulus was measured at intervals of 30 s × 10 sets. The second experiment (n = 16) aimed to observe and compare the prolonged effect of different durations of stretching on the shear modulus. Short and long stretching duration groups underwent 30s × 1 set and 30s × 10 sets, respectively. The assessments of shear modulus were conducted before, immediately after, and at 5, 10, and 15 min post-stretching. In experiment I, the shear modulus decreased immediately after a bout (30 s) of stretching (p < 0.001, change: -2.3 kPa, effect size: r = 0.72) and further decreased after 3 repetitions (i.e., 90 s) of stretching (p = 0.03, change: -1.0 kPa, effect size: r = 0.53). In experiment II, the change in the shear modulus after stretching was greater in the long duration group than in the short duration group (p = 0.013, group mean difference: -2.5 kPa, partial η 2 = 0.36). The shear modulus of PMi decreased immediately after stretching, and stretching for a long duration was promising to maintain the decreased shear modulus. The acute and prolonged effects on the PMi shear modulus provide information relevant to minimum and persistent stretching time in rehabilitation and sport practice.

Abstract
A novel stretching modality was developed to provide repetitive small length changes to the plantar flexors undergoing passive stretch defined as "minute oscillation stretching" (MOS). This study investigated the effects of MOS on neuromuscular activity during force production, the rate of torque development (RTD), and the elastic properties of the plantar flexors and Achilles tendon. Ten healthy males participated in this study. The neuromuscular activity of the triceps surae and tibialis anterior muscles during maximal voluntary plantar flexion torque [MVT], RTD of plantar flexion, Achilles tendon stiffness, and muscle stiffness were measured before and after two types of interventions for a total of 5 minutes: static stretching (SS) and MOS at 15 Hz and without intervention (control). Achilles tendon stiffness was calculated from the tendon elongation measuring by ultrasonography. Muscle stiffness was determined for the medial gastrocnemius [MG] using shear wave elastography. The MVT, mean electromyographic amplitudes [mEMG] of MG and lateral gastrocnemius [LG], and RTD were significantly decreased following SS (MVT: -7.2 ± 7.9%; mEMG of MG: -8.7 ± 10.2%; mEMG of LG: -12.4 ± 10.5%; RTD: -6.6 ± 6.8%), but not after MOS. Achilles tendon stiffness significantly decreased after SS (-13.4 ± 12.3%) and MOS (-9.7 ± 11.5%), with no significant differences between them. Muscle stiffness significantly decreased in SS and MOS, with relative changes being significantly greater for MOS (-7.9 ± 8.3%) than SS (-2.3 ± 2.9%) interventions. All variables remained unchanged in the controls. In conclusion, MOS changed muscle-tendon compliance without loss of muscle function.
