Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic has revealed that viruses can have multiple receptor properties, penetrating various tissues and causing mutations in various genes, thus promoting a range of metabolic disorders. The purpose of this study was to investigate the connection between three factors: diabetic status, pre-hospitalization oxygen therapy, and saturation levels, to the values of morphological, inflammatory, and biochemical parameters in the blood serum of COVID-19 patients. The study group consisted of 2139 patients, 1076 women (50.30%) and 1063 men (49.70%), with an average age of 63.73 ± 15.69 years. The population was divided into three groups based on a three-stage scale, taking into account patients with either type 2 diabetes/prediabetes (473 patients), those who received oxygen therapy before hospitalization, and those with a saturation value of below 95% (cut-off value). Among patients who did not receive pre-hospitalization oxygen therapy, those with diabetes and a SpO2 level < 95% had significantly higher levels of D-dimers, procalcitonin, albumin, lymphocytes, RDW-SD ≥ 47, potassium, creatinine, and troponin T when compared to diabetic patients with a SpO2 level ≥ 95%. Similarly, in the same group of patients without pre-hospitalization oxygen therapy, those without diabetes but with a SpO2 level < 95% showed significantly increased levels of IL-6, CRP, albumin, lymphocytes, RDW-SD ≥ 47, glucose, potassium, sodium, creatinine, and ALT, compared to patients without diabetes and with a SpO2 level ≥ 95%. The findings suggest that lower saturation levels may result in increased potassium and glucose levels in patients who did not receive any oxygen therapy before hospitalization due to COVID-19. It is hypothesized that this may be caused by damage to pancreatic β-cells by SARS-CoV-2, and disturbances in the potassium channel, leading to cell membrane depolarization and insulin secretion.

Abstract
Objective Although the impact of the variants of COVID-19 on the general population is diminishing, there is still a certain mortality rate for severe and critically ill patients, especially for the elderly with comorbidities. The present study investigated whether the D-dimer to albumin ratio (DAR) can predict the severity of illness and mortality in COVID-19 patients. Methods A total of 1,993 patients with COVID-19 were retrospectively reviewed and the association of DAR with severe or critical illness or death during hospitalization was analyzed. The area under the ROC curve was used to screen the best indicators, Chi-square test, rank sum test, and univariate and multivariate binary logistic regression analysis were used to calculate the mean value of difference and adjusted odds ratio (aORs) with their 95% CI, and finally, survival was analyzed using Kaplan-Meier (KM) curves. Results Among 1,993 patients with COVID-19, 13.4% were severely ill, and the mortality rate was 2.3%. The area under the curve (AUC) using DAR to predict severe and critically ill patients was higher than that using other parameters. The best cut-off value of DAR was 21 in the ROC with a sensitivity of 83.1% and a specificity of 68.7%. After adjusting age, gender, comorbidities, and treatment, the binary logistic regression analysis showed that elevated DAR was an independent risk factor for severely ill and mortality of COVID-19 patients. The KM curve suggested that patients with a higher DAR was associated with worse survival. The negative predictive value of DAR (21) for adverse prognosis and death was 95.98 and 99.84%, respectively, with a sensitivity of 80.9 and 95.65%, respectively. Conclusion The DAR may be an important predictor for severe illness and mortality in COVID-19 patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The novel COVID-19 was rapidly spreading and was highly contagious. COVID-19 caused over 6 million deaths worldwide, with high mortality rates, particularly in severe cases. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to investigate whether serum albumin-neutrophil count to lymphocyte count ratio (NLR) score (ANS) could be used as a prognostic indicator of COVID-19 severity. DESIGN A retrospective study. PARTICIPANTS Based on the WHO diagnostic criteria, patients were classified as either non-severe (n=270) or severe (n=100). PRIMARY AND SECONDARY OUTCOME MEASURES NLR, serum albumin level and ANS. MAIN RESULTS The NLR of patients with severe disease was significantly higher than that of those with non-severe disease. Serum albumin levels were significantly lower in patients with severe disease than in those with non-severe disease. The cut-off values representing the maximum potential effectiveness of serum albumin and NLR were 33.5 g/L and 8.25, respectively, according to the Youden index. In patients with severe COVID-19, we observed that the serum albumin level, NLR and ANS were independent prognostic indicators of severe COVID-19 using logistic analysis. The relative risk of severe COVID-19 was 7.65 (95% CI 3.72 to 15.75, p<0.05) in the ANS 2 group compared with that in ANS 0. CONCLUSIONS ANS could be used as a prognostic indicator of COVID-19 severity.

Abstract
Serum albumin, commonly recognized as a predominant major plasma protein, is ubiquitously distributed among vertebrates, demonstrating versatility and widespread accessibility. Numerous studies have discussed the composition and attributes of human and bovine serum albumin; nonetheless, few systematic and comprehensive summaries on human and bovine serum albumin exist. This paper reviews the applications of human and bovine serum albumin in biomedical engineering. First, we introduce the differences in the structure of human and bovine serum albumin. Next, we describe the extraction methods for human and bovine serum albumin (fractionation process separation, magnetic adsorption, reverse micellar (RM) extraction, and genetic engineering) and the advantages and disadvantages of recently developed extraction methods. The characteristics of different processing forms of human and bovine serum albumin are also discussed, concomitantly elucidating their intrinsic properties, functions, and applications in biomedicine. Notably, their pivotal functions as carriers for drugs and tissue-engineered scaffolds, as well as their contributions to cell reproduction and bioimaging, are critically examined. Finally, to provide guidance for researchers in their future work, this review summarizes the current state of human and bovine serum albumin research and outlines potential future research topics.

Abstract
Aims to investigate the relationship between nutritional biochemical indexes and hospitalization outcomes of COVID-19 patients, 132 continuous patients with COVID-19 from December 2022 to January 2023 in Lishui hospital were retrospectively analyzed, and the nutritional biochemical indexes in peripheral blood, such as total protein, albumin, calcium, phosphorus, and magnesium, were detected. Meanwhile, the levels of several cytokines and PBMC subtypes (CD4, CD3, CD8, NK and B cells) were detected too. The Spearman correlation analysis, one-way ANOVA and multivariate logit regression were conducted. Results suggested that the levels of total protein and albumin were significantly decreased in patients with poor outcomes, and the levels of calcium, phosphorus, and magnesium were significantly correlated with hospitalization outcomes. COVID-19 patients with diabetes had higher levels of IL-6 and IFN-γ than those patients without diabetes. The levels of IL-2, IFN-γ, IL-6 and Il-10 in the dead patients were significantly higher than those in the recovery and worse patients. Total protein and albumin were significantly positively correlated with levels of NK and B, CD4, CD8, CD3 lymphocytes. The levels of CD4, CD8 and CD3 lymphocytes were significantly decreased in dead patients than other patients. Multivariate logit regression analysis suggests that lymphocyte number, albumin and IL-6 are independent risk factors to evaluate the hospitalization outcome. In summary, nutritional biochemical indexes were significantly corelated with cytokines and PBMC subsets, and had an impact on the severity of COVID-19 patients. Improvement of low protein malnutrition is broad-spectrum and basic strategy to improve the hospitalization outcome of COVID-19.

Abstract
Introduction: As coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) has evolved into a global pandemic, increasing numbers of reports have linked obesity to more severe COVID-19 illness and death. However, almost all the studies focused on an increased risk of mortality or intensive care unit (ICU) admission among hospitalized obese patients with COVID-19. Is obesity also associated with the incidence of acute lung injury (ALI) in the patients with COVID-19? How about underweight patients? The answer is lacking. Therefore, our following research will answer the above two questions. Methods: We collected and analyzed epidemiologic, demographic, clinical, and laboratory data from 193 confirmed cases of COVID-19 at Union Hospital, Tongji Medical College, Huazhong University of Science and Technology in Wuhan, China, between January 1, 2020, and March 13, 2020. They were followed up until April 15, 2020. Underweight was defined by body mass index (BMI) lower than 18.5 kg/m2, normal weight by 18.5-23.9 kg/m2, overweight by 24.0-27.9 kg/m2, and obesity as ≥28 kg/m2. Results: Among these patients, 5.70% were underweight, 58.03% were normal weight, 27.98% were overweight, and 8.29% were obese. Underweight patients were more likely to have a headache (P = 0.029). Obese patients were more likely than other groups to experience a decline in lymphocyte counts (P = 0.038), an increase in C-reactive protein (CRP; P = 0.023), bilateral multiple mottling, and ground glass opacity in the lungs (P = 0.007). Besides, the proportion of patients receiving human immunoglobulin + systematic corticosteroids treatment is the highest among the obese group compared with other BMI groups. After adjusting for potential confounders, underweight patients had a 6.483-fold higher (P = 0.012), and obese patients showed a 5.965-fold higher odds for developing ALI than normal-weight patients (P = 0.022). In addition, underweight patients were 3.255 times more likely than normal-weight patients to develop secondary infections (P = 0.041). Conclusions: Our study showed that both underweight and obese patients with COVID-19 tend to develop ALI compared with normal-weight patients. Underweight patients were more likely to develop a secondary infection than other patients.
