Carbon Fibers for Bioelectrochemical: Precursors, Bioelectrochemical System, and Biosensors

Abstract

Carbon fibers (CFs) demonstrate a range of excellent properties including (but not limited to) microscale diameter, high hardness, high strength, light weight, high chemical resistance, and high temperature resistance. Therefore, it is necessary to summarize the application market of CFs. CFs with good physical and chemical properties stand out among many materials. It is believed that highly fibrotic CFs will play a crucial role. This review first introduces the precursors of CFs, such as polyacrylonitrile, bitumen, and lignin. Then this review introduces CFs used in BESs, such as electrode materials and modification strategies of MFC, MEC, MDC, and other cells in a large space. Then, CFs in biosensors including enzyme sensor, DNA sensor, immune sensor and implantable sensor are summarized. Finally, we discuss briefly the challenges and research directions of CFs application in BESs, biosensors and more fields.

Applications of Nanomaterials in Microbial Fuel Cells: A Review

Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) are an environmentally friendly technology and a source of renewable energy. It is used to generate electrical energy from organic waste using bacteria, which is an effective technology in wastewater treatment. The anode and the cathode electrodes and proton exchange membranes (PEM) are important components affecting the performance and operation of MFC. Conventional materials used in the manufacture of electrodes and membranes are insufficient to improve the efficiency of MFC. The use of nanomaterials in the manufacture of the anode had a prominent effect in improving the performance in terms of increasing the surface area, increasing the transfer of electrons from the anode to the cathode, biocompatibility, and biofilm formation and improving the oxidation reactions of organic waste using bacteria. The use of nanomaterials in the manufacture of the cathode also showed the improvement of cathode reactions or oxygen reduction reactions (ORR). The PEM has a prominent role in separating the anode and the cathode in the MFC, transferring protons from the anode chamber to the cathode chamber while preventing the transfer of oxygen. Nanomaterials have been used in the manufacture of membrane components, which led to improving the chemical and physical properties of the membranes and increasing the transfer rates of protons, thus improving the performance and efficiency of MFC in generating electrical energy and improving wastewater treatment.

Effects of various materials used to promote the direct interspecies electron transfer on anaerobic digestion of low-concentration swine manure

The activation of direct interspecies electron transfer (DIET) by the supplementation of conductive materials is one of the effective and available methods to enhance anaerobic digestion (AD). Microorganisms that colonize the surface of these materials form biofilms, the study of which could provide new insights into the character of the DIET process and its effect on AD. The present study focused on AD performance, microbial community, as well as morphological and topological features of biofilms on various materials used to promote DIET during AD of low-concentration swine manure. The best AD characteristics were observed in stainless steel mesh (SM)/digested cow manure (CM) and polyester felt (PF)/digested sewage sludge (SS) combinations used as material/inoculum, respectively. Thus, potential methane yields in CM-SM and SS-PF were up to 26.4% and 26.2% higher compared to the corresponding controls. Microbial analysis of biofilms revealed the dominance of putatively syntrophic bacteria of the MBA03 group of the Limnochordia class in CM inoculated reactors, and syntrophic proteolytic bacteria of the genus Coprothermobacter and acetogenic Clostridium sensu stricto 1, known for their ability to carry out DIET, in SS inoculated reactors. Biofilms on non-conductive materials contained pili-like structures, which were observed only in SS inoculated reactors. Polyester felt tended to biofoul better than carbon felt, resulting in up to 2.8, 3.2 and 1.8 higher nucleic acid, extracellular polymeric substances, and total biomass content, respectively, depending on the inoculum. These results provide new insights into the different types of DIET that can occur in low-loaded AD systems with attached growth.

How Comparable are Microbial Electrochemical Systems around the Globe? An Electrochemical and Microbiological Cross-Laboratory Study

A cross-laboratory study on microbial fuel cells (MFC) which involved different institutions around the world is presented. The study aims to assess the development of autochthone microbial pools enriched from domestic wastewater, cultivated in identical single-chamber MFCs, operated in the same way, thereby approaching the idea of developing common standards for MFCs. The MFCs are inoculated with domestic wastewater in different geographic locations. The acclimation stage and, consequently, the startup time are longer or shorter depending on the inoculum, but all MFCs reach similar maximum power outputs (55±22 μW cm-2 ) and COD removal efficiencies (87±9 %), despite the diversity of the bacterial communities. It is inferred that the MFC performance starts when the syntrophic interaction of fermentative and electrogenic bacteria stabilizes under anaerobic conditions at the anode. The generated power is mostly limited by electrolytic conductivity, electrode overpotentials, and an unbalanced external resistance. The enriched microbial consortia, although composed of different bacterial groups, share similar functions both on the anode and the cathode of the different MFCs, resulting in similar electrochemical output.

The Limits of Three-Dimensionality: Systematic Assessment of Effective Anode Macrostructure Dimensions for Mixed-Culture Electroactive Biofilms

This study analyzes the biofilm growth and long-term current production of mixed-culture, electrochemically active biofilms (EABs) on macrostructured electrodes under low-shear-force conditions. The channel dimensions were altered systematically in the range 400 μm to 2 mm, and the channel heights were varied between 1 and 4 mm to simulate macrostructures of different scales. Electrodes with finer-structured surfaces produced higher current densities in the short term owing to their large surface area but were outperformed in the long term because the accumulation of biomass led to limitations of mass transfer into the structures. The best long-term performance was observed for electrodes with channel dimensions of 1×4 mm, which showed no significant decrease in performance in the long term. Channels with a diameter of 400 μm were overgrown by the biofilm, which led to a transition from 3 D to 2 D behavior, indicating that structures of this scale might not be suitable for long-term operation under low-shear-stress conditions.

Microbial fuel cells: From fundamentals to applications. A review

In the past 10-15 years, the microbial fuel cell (MFC) technology has captured the attention of the scientific community for the possibility of transforming organic waste directly into electricity through microbially catalyzed anodic, and microbial/enzymatic/abiotic cathodic electrochemical reactions. In this review, several aspects of the technology are considered. Firstly, a brief history of abiotic to biological fuel cells and subsequently, microbial fuel cells is presented. Secondly, the development of the concept of microbial fuel cell into a wider range of derivative technologies, called bioelectrochemical systems, is described introducing briefly microbial electrolysis cells, microbial desalination cells and microbial electrosynthesis cells. The focus is then shifted to electroactive biofilms and electron transfer mechanisms involved with solid electrodes. Carbonaceous and metallic anode materials are then introduced, followed by an explanation of the electro catalysis of the oxygen reduction reaction and its behavior in neutral media, from recent studies. Cathode catalysts based on carbonaceous, platinum-group metal and platinum-group-metal-free materials are presented, along with membrane materials with a view to future directions. Finally, microbial fuel cell practical implementation, through the utilization of energy output for practical applications, is described.
