Towards a measure of auditory-filter phase response

Evidence for proactive and retroactive temporal pattern analysis in simultaneous maskinga)

Amplitude modulation (AM) of a masker reduces its masking on a simultaneously presented unmodulated pure-tone target, which likely involves dip listening. This study tested the idea that dip-listening efficiency may depend on stimulus context, i.e., the match in AM peakedness (AMP) between the masker and a precursor or postcursor stimulus, assuming a form of temporal pattern analysis process. Masked thresholds were measured in normal-hearing listeners using Schroeder-phase harmonic complexes as maskers and precursors or postcursors. Experiment 1 showed threshold elevation (i.e., interference) when a flat cursor preceded or followed a peaked masker, suggesting proactive and retroactive temporal pattern analysis. Threshold decline (facilitation) was observed when the masker AMP was matched to the precursor, irrespective of stimulus AMP, suggesting only proactive processing. Subsequent experiments showed that both interference and facilitation (1) remained robust when a temporal gap was inserted between masker and cursor, (2) disappeared when an F0-difference was introduced between masker and precursor, and (3) decreased when the presentation level was reduced. These results suggest an important role of envelope regularity in dip listening, especially when masker and cursor are F0-matched and, therefore, form one perceptual stream. The reported effects seem to represent a time-domain variant of comodulation masking release.

Swept Along: Measuring Otoacoustic Emissions Using Continuously Varying Stimuli

At the 2004 Midwinter Meeting of the Association for Research in Otolaryngology, Glenis Long and her colleagues introduced a method for measuring distortion-product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs) using primary-tone stimuli whose instantaneous frequencies vary continuously with time. In contrast to standard OAE measurement methods, in which emissions are measured in the sinusoidal steady state using discrete tones of well-defined frequency, the swept-tone method sweeps across frequency, often at rates exceeding 1 oct/s. The resulting response waveforms are then analyzed using an appropriate filter (e.g., by least-squares fitting). Although introduced as a convenient way of studying DPOAE fine structure by separating the total OAE into distortion and reflection components, the swept-tone method has since been extended to stimulus-frequency emissions and has proved an efficient and valuable tool for probing cochlear mechanics. One day-a long time coming-swept tones may even find their way into the audiology clinic.

Mechanisms of masking by Schroeder-phase harmonic tone complexes in the budgerigar (Melopsittacus undulatus)

Schroeder-phase harmonic tone complexes can have a flat temporal envelope and rising or falling instantaneous-frequency sweeps within F0 periods, depending on the phase-scaling parameter C. Human tone-detection thresholds in a concurrent Schroeder masker are 10-15 dB lower for positive C values (rising frequency sweeps) compared to negative (falling sweeps), potentially due to cochlear mechanics, though this hypothesis remains controversial. Birds provide an interesting model for studies of Schroeder masking because many species produce vocalizations containing frequency sweeps. Prior behavioral studies in birds suggest less behavioral threshold difference between maskers with opposite C values than in humans, but focused on low masker F0s and did not explore neural mechanisms. We performed behavioral Schroeder-masking experiments in budgerigars (Melopsittacus undulatus) using a wide range of masker F0 and C values. Signal frequency was 2800 Hz. Neural recordings from the midbrain characterized encoding of behavioral stimuli in awake animals. Behavioral thresholds increased with increasing masker F0 and showed minimal difference between opposite C values, consistent with prior budgerigar studies. Midbrain recordings showed prominent temporal and rate-based encoding of Schroeder F0, and in many cases, marked asymmetry in Schroeder responses between C polarities. Neural thresholds for Schroeder-masked tone detection were often based on a response decrement compared to the masker alone, consistent with prominent modulation tuning in midbrain neurons, and were generally similar between opposite C values. The results highlight the likely importance of envelope cues in Schroeder masking and show that differences in supra-threshold Schroeder responses do not necessarily result in neural threshold differences.

On the Tonotopy of the Low-Frequency Region of the Cochlea

It is generally assumed that frequency selectivity varies along the cochlea. For example, at the base of the cochlea, which is a region sensitive to high-frequency sounds, the best frequency of a cochlear location increases toward the most basal end, that is, near the stapes. Response phases also vary along cochlear locations. At any given frequency, there is a decrease in phase lag toward the stapes. This tonotopic arrangement in the cochlea was originally described by Georg von Békésy in a seminal series of experiments on human cadavers and has been confirmed in more recent works on live laboratory animals. Nonetheless, our knowledge of tonotopy at the apex of the cochlea remains incomplete in animals with low-frequency hearing, which is relevant to human speech. The results of our experiments on guinea pig, gerbil, and chinchilla cochleas, regardless of the sex of the animal, show that responses to sound differ at locations across the apex in a pattern consistent with previous studies of the base of the cochlea.SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT Tonotopy is an important property of the auditory system that has been shown to exist in many auditory centers. In fact, most auditory implants work on the assumption of its existence by assigning different frequencies to different stimulating electrodes based on their location. At the level of the basilar membrane in the cochlea, a tonotopic arrangement implies that high-frequency stimuli evoke largest displacements at the base, near the ossicles, and low-frequency sounds have their greatest effects at the apex. Although tonotopy has been confirmed at the base of the cochlea on live animals at the apex of the cochlea, however, it has been less studied. Here, we show that a tonotopic arrangement does exist at the apex of the cochlea.

Auditory filter shapes derived from forward and simultaneous masking at low frequencies: Implications for human cochlear tuning

Behavioral forward-masking thresholds with a spectrally notched-noise masker and a fixed low-level probe tone have been shown to provide accurate estimates of cochlear tuning. Estimates using simultaneous masking are similar but generally broader, presumably due to nonlinear cochlear suppression effects. So far, estimates with forward masking have been limited to frequencies of 1 kHz and above. This study used spectrally notched noise under forward and simultaneous masking to estimate frequency selectivity between 200 and 1000 Hz for young adult listeners with normal hearing. Estimates of filter tuning at 1000 Hz were in agreement with previous studies. Estimated tuning broadened below 1000 Hz, with the filter quality factor based on the equivalent rectangular bandwidth (Q_ERB) decreasing more rapidly with decreasing frequency than predicted by previous equations, in line with earlier predictions based on otoacoustic-emission latencies. Estimates from simultaneous masking remained broader than those from forward masking by approximately the same ratio. The new data provide a way to compare human cochlear tuning estimates with auditory-nerve tuning curves from other species across most of the auditory frequency range.

Neural processing and perception of Schroeder-phase harmonic tone complexes in the gerbil: Relating single-unit neurophysiology to behavior

Schroeder-phase harmonic tone complexes have been used in physiological and psychophysical studies in several species to gain insight into cochlear function. Each pitch period of the Schroeder stimulus contains a linear frequency sweep; the duty cycle, sweep velocity, and direction are controlled by parameters of the phase spectrum. Here, responses to a range of Schroeder-phase harmonic tone complexes were studied both behaviorally and in neural recordings from the auditory nerve and inferior colliculus of Mongolian gerbils. Gerbils were able to discriminate Schroeder-phase harmonic tone complexes based on sweep direction, duty cycle, and/or velocity for fundamental frequencies up to 200 Hz. Temporal representation in neural responses based on the van Rossum spike-distance metric, with time constants of either 1 ms or related to the stimulus' period, was compared to average discharge rates. Neural responses and behavioral performance were both expressed in terms of sensitivity, d', to allow direct comparisons. Our results suggest that in the auditory nerve, stimulus fine structure is represented by spike timing while envelope is represented by rate. In the inferior colliculus, both temporal fine structure and envelope appear to be represented best by rate. However, correlations between neural d' values and behavioral sensitivity for sweep direction were strongest for both temporal metrics, for both auditory nerve and inferior colliculus. Furthermore, the high sensitivity observed in the inferior colliculus neural rate-based discrimination suggests that these neurons integrate across multiple inputs arising from the auditory periphery.

Effects of Musical Training and Hearing Loss on Fundamental Frequency Discrimination and Temporal Fine Structure Processing: Psychophysics and Modeling

Several studies have shown that musical training leads to improved fundamental frequency (F0) discrimination for young listeners with normal hearing (NH). It is unclear whether a comparable effect of musical training occurs for listeners whose sensory encoding of F0 is degraded. To address this question, the effect of musical training was investigated for three groups of listeners (young NH, older NH, and older listeners with hearing impairment, HI). In a first experiment, F0 discrimination was investigated using complex tones that differed in harmonic content and phase configuration (sine, positive, or negative Schroeder). Musical training was associated with significantly better F0 discrimination of complex tones containing low-numbered harmonics for all groups of listeners. Part of this effect was caused by the fact that musicians were more robust than non-musicians to harmonic roving. Despite the benefit relative to their non-musicians counterparts, the older musicians, with or without HI, performed worse than the young musicians. In a second experiment, binaural sensitivity to temporal fine structure (TFS) cues was assessed for the same listeners by estimating the highest frequency at which an interaural phase difference was perceived. Performance was better for musicians for all groups of listeners and the use of TFS cues was degraded for the two older groups of listeners. These findings suggest that musical training is associated with an enhancement of both TFS cues encoding and F0 discrimination in young and older listeners with or without HI, although the musicians' benefit decreased with increasing hearing loss. Additionally, models of the auditory periphery and midbrain were used to examine the effect of HI on F0 encoding. The model predictions reflected the worsening in F0 discrimination with increasing HI and accounted for up to 80 % of the variance in the data.

A Loudness Model for Time-Varying Sounds Incorporating Binaural Inhibition

This article describes a model of loudness for time-varying sounds that incorporates the concept of binaural inhibition, namely, that the signal applied to one ear can reduce the internal response to a signal at the other ear. For each ear, the model includes the following: a filter to allow for the effects of transfer of sound through the outer and middle ear; a short-term spectral analysis with greater frequency resolution at low than at high frequencies; calculation of an excitation pattern, representing the magnitudes of the outputs of the auditory filters as a function of center frequency; application of a compressive nonlinearity to the output of each auditory filter; and smoothing over time of the resulting instantaneous specific loudness pattern using an averaging process resembling an automatic gain control. The resulting short-term specific loudness patterns are used to calculate broadly tuned binaural inhibition functions, the amount of inhibition depending on the relative short-term specific loudness at the two ears. The inhibited specific loudness patterns are summed across frequency to give an estimate of the short-term loudness for each ear. The overall short-term loudness is calculated as the sum of the short-term loudness values for the two ears. The long-term loudness for each ear is calculated by smoothing the short-term loudness for that ear, again by a process resembling automatic gain control, and the overall loudness impression is obtained by summing the long-term loudness across ears. The predictions of the model are more accurate than those of an earlier model that did not incorporate binaural inhibition.

A Re-examination of the Effect of Masker Phase Curvature on Non-simultaneous Masking

Forward masking of a sinusoidal signal is determined not only by the masker's power spectrum but also by its phase spectrum. Specifically, when the phase spectrum is such that the output of an auditory filter centred on the signal has a highly modulated ("peaked") envelope, there is less masking than when that envelope is flat. This finding has been attributed to non-linearities, such as compression, reducing the average neural response to maskers that produce more peaked auditory filter outputs (Carlyon and Datta, J Acoust Soc Am 101:3636-3647, 1997). Here we evaluate an alternative explanation proposed by Wotcjzak and Oxenham (Wojtczak and Oxenham, J Assoc Res Otolaryngol 10:595-607, 2009). They reported a masker phase effect for 6-kHz signals when the masker components were at least an octave below the signal frequency. Wotcjzak and Oxenham argued that this effect was inconsistent with cochlear compression, and, because it did not occur at lower signal frequencies, was also inconsistent with more central compression. It was instead attributed to activation of the efferent system reducing the response to the subsequent probe. Here, experiment 1 replicated their main findings. Experiment 2 showed that the phase effect on off-frequency forward masking is similar at signal frequencies of 2 and 6 kHz, provided that one equates the number of components likely to interact within an auditory filter centred on the signal, thereby roughly equating the effect of masker phase on the peakiness of that filter output. Experiment 3 showed that for some subjects, masker phase also had a strong influence on off-frequency backward masking of the signal, and that the size of this effect correlated across subjects with that observed in forward masking. We conclude that the masker phase effect is mediated mainly by cochlear non-linearities, with a possible additional effect of more central compression. The data are not consistent with a role for the efferent system.

The role of compression in the simultaneous masker phase effect

Peripheral compression is believed to play a major role in the masker phase effect (MPE). While compression is almost instantaneous, activation of the efferent system reduces compression in a temporally evolving manner. To study the role of efferent-controlled compression in the MPE, in experiment 1, simultaneous masking of a 30-ms 4-kHz tone by 40-ms Schroeder-phase harmonic complexes was measured with on- and off-frequency precursors as a function of masker phase curvature for two masker levels (60 and 90 dB sound pressure level). The MPE was quantified by the threshold range [min/max difference (MMD)] across the phase curvatures. For the 60-dB condition, the presence of on-frequency precursor decreased the MMD from 10 to 5 dB. Experiment 2 studied the role of the precursor on the auditory filter's bandwidth. The on-frequency precursor was found to increase the bandwidth, an effect incorporated in the subsequent modeling. A model of the auditory periphery including cochlear filtering and basilar membrane compression generally underestimated the MMDs. A model based on two-step compression, including compression of inner hair cells, accounted for the MMDs across precursor and level conditions. Overall, the observed precursor effects and the model predictions suggest an important role of compression in the simultaneous MPE.

Frequency shifts in distortion-product otoacoustic emissions evoked by swept tones

When distortion-product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs) are evoked using stimuli whose instantaneous frequencies change rapidly and continuously with time (swept tones), the oscillatory interference pattern known as distortion-product fine structure shifts slightly along the frequency axis in the same direction as the sweep. By analogy with the temporal mechanisms thought to underlie the differing efficacies of up- and down-swept stimuli as perceptual maskers (e.g., Schroeder-phase complexes), fine-structure shifts have been ascribed to the phase distortion associated with dispersive wave propagation in the cochlea. This paper tests an alternative hypothesis and finds that the observed shifts arise predominantly as a methodological side effect of the analysis procedures commonly used to extract delayed emissions from the measured time waveform. Approximate expressions for the frequency shifts of DPOAE distortion and reflection components are derived, validated with computer simulations, and applied to account for DPOAE fine-structure shifts measured in human subjects. Component magnitudes are shown to shift twice as much as component phases. Procedures for compensating swept-tone measurements to obtain estimates of the total DPOAE and its components measured at other sweep rates or in the sinusoidal steady state are presented.

The effect of noise fluctuation and spectral bandwidth on gap detection

Experiment 1 investigated gap detection for random and low-fluctuation noise (LFN) markers as a function of bandwidth (25-1600 Hz), level [40 or 75 dB sound pressure level (SPL)], and center frequency (500-4000 Hz). Gap thresholds for random noise improved as bandwidth increased from 25 to 1600 Hz, but there were only minor effects related to center frequency and level. For narrow bandwidths, thresholds were lower for LFN than random markers; this difference extended to higher bandwidths at the higher center frequencies and was particularly large at high stimulus level. Effects of frequency and level were broadly consistent with the idea that peripheral filtering can increase fluctuation in the encoded LFN stimulus. Experiment 2 tested gap detection for 200-Hz-wide noise bands centered on 2000 Hz, using high-pass maskers to examine spread of excitation effects. Such effects were absent or minor for random noise markers and the 40-dB-SPL LFN markers. In contrast, some high-pass maskers substantially worsened performance for the 75-dB-SPL LFN markers. These results were consistent with an interpretation that relatively acute gap detection for the high-level LFN gap markers resulted from spread of excitation to higher-frequency auditory filters where the magnitude and phase characteristics of the LFN stimuli are better preserved.

Can place-specific cochlear dispersion be represented by auditory steady-state responses?

The present study investigated to what extent properties of local cochlear dispersion can be objectively assessed through auditory steady-state responses (ASSR). The hypothesis was that stimuli compensating for the phase response at a particular cochlear location generate a maximally modulated basilar membrane (BM) response at that BM position, due to the large "within-channel" synchrony of activity. This would lead, in turn, to a larger ASSR amplitude than other stimuli of corresponding intensity and bandwidth. Two stimulus types were chosen: 1] Harmonic tone complexes consisting of equal-amplitude tones with a starting phase following an algorithm developed by Schroeder [IEEE Trans. Inf. Theory 16, 85-89 (1970)] that have earlier been considered in behavioral studies to estimate human auditory filter phase responses; and 2] simulations of auditory-filter impulse responses (IR). In both cases, also the temporally reversed versions of the stimuli were considered. The ASSRs obtained with the Schroeder tone complexes were found to be dominated by "across-channel" synchrony and, thus, do not reflect local place-specific information. In the case of the more frequency-specific stimuli, no significant differences were found between the responses to the IR and its temporally reversed counterpart. Thus, whereas ASSRs to narrowband stimuli have been used as an objective indicator of frequency-specific hearing sensitivity, the method does not seem to be sensitive enough to reflect local cochlear dispersion.

The development of a fast method for recording Schroeder-phase masking functions

Schroeder-phase masking complexes have been used in many psychophysical experiments to examine the phase curvature of cochlear filtering at characteristic frequencies, and other aspects of cochlear nonlinearity. In a normal nonlinear cochlea, changing the "scalar factor" of the Schroeder-phase masker from -1 through 0 to +1 results in a marked difference in the measured masked thresholds, whereas this difference is reduced in ears with damaged outer hair cells. Despite the valuable information it may give, one disadvantage of the Schroeder-phase masking procedure is the length of the test - using the conventional three-alternative forced-choice technique to measure a masking function takes around 45 min for one combination of probe frequency and intensity. As an alternative, we have developed a fast method of recording these functions which uses a Békésy tracking procedure. Testing at 500 Hz in normal hearing participants, we demonstrate that our fast method: i) shows good agreement with the conventional method; ii) shows high test-retest reliability; and iii) shortens the testing time to 8 min.

Phase effects in masking by harmonic complexes: detection of bands of speech-shaped noise

When phase relationships between partials of a complex masker produce highly modulated temporal envelopes on the basilar membrane, listeners may detect speech information from temporal dips in the within-channel masker envelopes. This source of masking release (MR) is however located in regions of unresolved masker partials and it is unclear how much of the speech information in these regions is really needed for intelligibility. Also, other sources of MR such as glimpsing in between resolved masker partials may provide sufficient information from regions that disregard phase relationships. This study simplified the problem of speech recognition to a masked detection task. Target bands of speech-shaped noise were restricted to frequency regions containing either only resolved or only unresolved masker partials, as a function of masker phase relationships (sine or random), masker fundamental frequency (F0) (50, 100, or 200 Hz), and masker spectral profile (flat-spectrum or speech-shaped). Although masker phase effects could be observed in unresolved regions at F0s of 50 and 100 Hz, it was only at 50-Hz F0 that detection thresholds were ever lower in unresolved than in resolved regions, suggesting little role of envelope modulations for harmonic complexes with F0s in the human voice range and at moderate level.

Exploring the role of feedback-based auditory reflexes in forward masking by schroeder-phase complexes

Several studies have postulated that psychoacoustic measures of auditory perception are influenced by efferent-induced changes in cochlear responses, but these postulations have generally remained untested. This study measured the effect of stimulus phase curvature and temporal envelope modulation on the medial olivocochlear reflex (MOCR) and on the middle-ear muscle reflex (MEMR). The role of the MOCR was tested by measuring changes in the ear-canal pressure at 6 kHz in the presence and absence of a band-limited harmonic complex tone with various phase curvatures, centered either at (on-frequency) or well below (off-frequency) the 6-kHz probe frequency. The influence of possible MEMR effects was examined by measuring phase-gradient functions for the elicitor effects and by measuring changes in the ear-canal pressure with a continuous suppressor of the 6-kHz probe. Both on- and off-frequency complex tone elicitors produced significant changes in ear canal sound pressure. However, the pattern of results was not consistent with the earlier hypotheses postulating that efferent effects produce the psychoacoustic dependence of forward-masked thresholds on masker phase curvature. The results also reveal unexpectedly long time constants associated with some efferent effects, the source of which remains unknown.

Illusory auditory continuity despite neural evidence to the contrary

Many previous studies have shown that a tone that is momentarily -interrupted can be perceived as continuous if the interruption is completely masked by noise. It has been suggested this "continuity illusion" occurs only when peripheral neural responses contain no evidence that the signal was interrupted. In this study, we used a combination of psychophysical measures and computational simulations of peripheral auditory responses to examine whether the continuity illusion can be experienced under conditions where peripheral neural responses contain evidence that the signal did not continue through the masker. Our results provide an example of a salient continuity illusion despite evidence of an interruption in the peripheral representation, indicating that the illusion may depend more on global features of the interrupting sound, such as its long-term specific loudness, than on its fine-grained temporal structure.

Phase effects in masking by harmonic complexes: speech recognition

Harmonic complexes that generate highly modulated temporal envelopes on the basilar membrane (BM) mask a tone less effectively than complexes that generate relatively flat temporal envelopes, because the non-linear active gain of the BM selectively amplifies a low-level tone in the dips of a modulated masker envelope. The present study examines a similar effect in speech recognition. Speech reception thresholds (SRTs) were measured for a voice masked by harmonic complexes with partials in sine phase (SP) or in random phase (RP). The masker's fundamental frequency (F0) was 50, 100 or 200 Hz. SRTs were considerably lower for SP than for RP maskers at 50-Hz F0, but the two converged at 100-Hz F0, while at 200-Hz F0, SRTs were a little higher for SP than RP maskers. The results were similar whether the target voice was male or female and whether the masker's spectral profile was flat or speech-shaped. Although listening in the masker dips has been shown to play a large role for artificial stimuli such as Schroeder-phase complexes at high levels, it contributes weakly to speech recognition in the presence of harmonic maskers with different crest factors at more moderate sound levels (65 dB SPL).

Estimating critical bandwidths of temporal sensitivity to low-frequency amplitude modulation

Auditory filter bandwidths are measured for a temporal process using an amplitude-modulation detection task. The signal is a 200 Hz wide, sinusoidally amplitude-modulated band of noise centered within an unmodulated notched-noise masker. A modulation rate of 10 Hz is used to avoid possible information loss at more central processing levels for high modulation rates. Threshold functions are obtained for 10-14 notch widths for each of four different center frequencies (0.6, 1, 2, and 4 kHz) to determine the maximum notch width at which the masker has an effect. The ratio of center frequency to maximum notch width is ~2 at all center frequencies. It is proposed that the bandwidths observed in temporal tasks, which are consistently greater than expected from the viewpoint of critical band theory, be characterized as "temporal critical bands." This proposal does not oppose, but provides a complement to the traditional critical band obtained in tasks involving spectral discrimination.

Global not local masker features govern the auditory continuity illusion

When an acoustic signal is temporarily interrupted by another sound, it is sometimes heard as continuing through, even when the signal is actually turned off during the interruption-an effect known as the "auditory continuity illusion." A widespread view is that the illusion can only occur when peripheral neural responses contain no evidence that the signal was interrupted. Here we challenge this view using a combination of psychophysical measures from human listeners and computational simulations with a model of the auditory periphery. The results reveal that the illusion seems to depend more on the overall specific loudness than on the peripheral masking properties of the interrupting sound. This finding indicates that the continuity illusion is determined by the global features, rather than the fine-grained temporal structure, of the interrupting sound, and argues against the view that the illusion arises in the auditory periphery.

Psychoacoustic performance and music and speech perception in prelingually deafened children with cochlear implants

The number of pediatric cochlear implant (CI) recipients has increased substantially over the past 10 years, and it has become more important to understand the underlying mechanisms of the variable outcomes in this population. In this study, psychoacoustic measures of spectral-ripple and Schroeder-phase discrimination, the Clinical Assessment of Music Perception, and consonant-nucleus-consonant (CNC) word recognition in quiet and spondee reception threshold (SRT) in noise tests have been presented to 11 prelingually deafened CI users, aged 8-16 years with at least 5 years of CI experience. The children's performance was compared to the previously reported results of postlingually deafened adult CI users. The average spectral-ripple threshold (n = 10) was 2.08 ripples/octave. The average Schroeder-phase discrimination was 67.3% for 50 Hz and 56.5% for 200 Hz (n = 9). The Clinical Assessment of Music Perception test showed that the average complex pitch direction discrimination was 2.98 semitones. The mean melody score was at a chance level, and the mean timbre score was 34.1% correct. The mean CNC word recognition score was 68.6%, and the mean SRT in steady noise was -8.5 dB SNR. The children's spectral-ripple resolution, CNC word recognition, and SRT in noise performances were, within statistical bounds, the same as in a population of postlingually deafened adult CI users. However, Schroeder-phase discrimination and music perception were generally poorer than in the adults. It is possible then that this poorer performance seen in the children might be partly accounted for by the delayed maturation in their temporal processing ability, and because of this, the children's performance may have been driven more by their spectral sensitivity.

Perception of across-frequency asynchrony and the role of cochlear delays

Cochlear filtering results in earlier responses to high than to low frequencies. This study examined potential perceptual correlates of cochlear delays by measuring the perception of relative timing between tones of different frequencies. A brief 250-Hz tone was combined with a brief 1-, 2-, 4-, or 6-kHz tone. Two experiments were performed, one involving subjective judgments of perceived synchrony, the other involving asynchrony detection and discrimination. The functions relating the proportion of "synchronous" responses to the delay between the tones were similar for all tone pairs. Perceived synchrony was maximal when the tones in a pair were gated synchronously. The perceived-synchrony function slopes were asymmetric, being steeper on the low-frequency-leading side. In the second experiment, asynchrony-detection thresholds were lower for low-frequency rather than for high-frequency leading pairs. In contrast with previous studies, but consistent with the first experiment, thresholds did not depend on frequency separation between the tones, perhaps because of the elimination of within-channel cues. The results of the two experiments were related quantitatively using a decision-theoretic model, and were found to be highly correlated. Overall the results suggest that frequency-dependent cochlear group delays are compensated for at higher processing stages, resulting in veridical perception of timing relationships across frequency.

Voice segregation by difference in fundamental frequency: evidence for harmonic cancellation

Two experiments investigated listeners' ability to use a difference of two semitones in fundamental frequency (F0) to segregate a target voice from harmonic complex tones, with speech-like spectral profiles. Masker partials were in random phase (experiment 1) or in sine phase (experiment 2) and stimuli were presented over headphones. Target's and masker's harmonicity were each distorted by F0 modulation and reverberation. The F0 of each source was manipulated (monotonized or modulated by 2 semitones at 5 Hz) factorially. In addition, all sources were presented from the same location in a virtual room with controlled reverberation, assigned factorially to each source. In both experiments, speech reception thresholds increased by about 2 dB when the F0 of the masker was modulated and increased by about 6 dB when, in addition to F0 modulation, the masker was reverberant. Masker partial phases did not influence the results. The results suggest that F0-segregation relies upon the masker's harmonicity, which is disrupted by rapid modulation. This effect is compounded by reverberation. In addition, F0-segregation was found to be independent of the depth of masker envelope modulations.

Otoacoustic estimation of cochlear tuning: validation in the chinchilla

We analyze published auditory-nerve and otoacoustic measurements in chinchilla to test a network of hypothesized relationships between cochlear tuning, cochlear traveling-wave delay, and stimulus-frequency otoacoustic emissions (SFOAEs). We find that the physiological data generally corroborate the network of relationships, including predictions from filter theory and the coherent-reflection model of OAE generation, at locations throughout the cochlea. The results support the use of otoacoustic emissions as noninvasive probes of cochlear tuning. Developing this application, we find that tuning ratios-defined as the ratio of tuning sharpness to SFOAE phase-gradient delay in periods-have a nearly species-invariant form in cat, guinea pig, and chinchilla. Analysis of the tuning ratios identifies a species-dependent parameter that locates a transition between "apical-like" and "basal-like" behavior involving multiple aspects of cochlear physiology. Approximate invariance of the tuning ratio allows determination of cochlear tuning from SFOAE delays. We quantify the procedure and show that otoacoustic estimates of chinchilla cochlear tuning match direct measures obtained from the auditory nerve. By assuming that invariance of the tuning ratio extends to humans, we derive new otoacoustic estimates of human cochlear tuning that remain mutually consistent with independent behavioral measurements obtained using different rationales, methodologies, and analysis procedures. The results confirm that at any given characteristic frequency (CF) human cochlear tuning appears sharper than that in the other animals studied, but varies similarly with CF. We show, however, that the exceptionality of human tuning can be exaggerated by the ways in which species are conventionally compared, which take no account of evident differences between the base and apex of the cochlea. Finally, our estimates of human tuning suggest that the spatial spread of excitation of a pure tone along the human basilar membrane is comparable to that in other common laboratory animals.

Phase effects on the perceived elevation of complex tones

Free-field source localization experiments with 30 source locations, symmetrically distributed in azimuth, elevation, and front-back location, were performed with periodic tones having different phase relationships among their components. Although the amplitude spectra were the same for these different kinds of stimuli, the tones with certain phase relationships were successfully localized while the tones with other phases led to large elevation errors and front-back reversals, normally growing with stimulus level. The results show that it is not enough to have a smooth, broadband, long-term signal spectrum for successful sagittal-plane localization. Instead, temporal factors are important. A model calculation investigates the idea that the tonotopic details that mediate localization need to be simultaneously, or almost simultaneously, accessible in the auditory system in order to achieve normal elevation perception. A qualitative model based on lateral inhibition seems capable in principle of accounting for both the phase effects and level effects.

Level dependence in behavioral measurements of auditory-filter phase characteristics

Two masking experiments were conducted to behaviorally estimate auditory-filter phase curvatures at different stimulus levels. Maskers were harmonic complexes consisting of equal-amplitude tones and phase spectra with varied curvatures. In Experiment 1, sinusoidal signal thresholds were measured at 2 and 4 kHz at fixed masker levels ranging from 50 to 90 dB sound pressure level (SPL). In Experiment 2, the masker level that just masked a sinusoidal signal at 2 and 4 kHz was measured at fixed signal levels of 25, 38, and 50 dB SPL. For both experiments, the estimated phase curvature approached zero (became less negative) with increasing stimulus level. This shift could suggest that the off-frequency phase characteristic of the auditory filter has an increasingly greater role on the estimated auditory-filter phase curvature at higher stimulus levels. This explanation is supported through the use of psychophysical modeling.

Discrimination of time-reversed harmonic complexes by normal-hearing and hearing-impaired listeners

Normal-hearing (NH) listeners and hearing-impaired (HI) listeners detected and discriminated time-reversed harmonic complexes constructed of equal-amplitude harmonic components with fundamental frequencies (F0s) ranging from 50 to 800 Hz. Component starting phases were selected according to the positive and negative Schroeder-phase algorithms to produce within-period frequency sweeps with relatively flat temporal envelopes. Detection thresholds were not affected by component starting phases for either group of listeners. At presentation levels of 80 dB SPL, NH listeners could discriminate the two waveforms nearly perfectly when the F0s were less than 300-400 Hz but fell to chance performance for higher F0s. HI listeners performed significantly poorer, with reduced discrimination at several of the F0s. In contrast, at a lower presentation level meant to nearly equate sensation levels for the two groups, NH listeners' discrimination was poorer than HI listeners at most F0s. Roving presentation levels had little effect on performance by NH listeners but reduced performance by HI listeners. The differential impact of roving level suggests a weaker perception of timbre differences and a greater susceptibility to the detrimental effects of experimental uncertainty in HI listeners.

On- and off-frequency forward masking by Schroeder-phase complexes

Forward masking by harmonic tone complexes was measured for on- and off-frequency maskers as a function of masker phase curvature for two masker durations (30 and 200 ms). For the lowest signal frequency (1 kHz), the results matched predictions based on the expected interactions between the phase curvature and amplitude compression of peripheral auditory filtering. For the higher signal frequencies (2 and 6 kHz), the data increasingly departed from predictions in two respects. First, the effects of the masker phase curvature became stronger with increasing masker duration, inconsistent with the expected effects of the fast-acting compression and time-invariant phase response of basilar membrane filtering. Second, significant effects of masker phase curvature were observed for the off-frequency masker using a 6-kHz signal, inconsistent with predictions based on linear processing of stimuli well below the signal frequency. New predictions were generated assuming an additional effect with a longer time constant, consistent with the influence of medial olivocochlear efferent activation on otoacoustic emissions in humans. Reasonable agreement between the predicted and the measured effects suggests that efferent activation is a potential candidate mechanism to explain certain spectro-temporal masking effects in human hearing.

Can temporal fine structure represent the fundamental frequency of unresolved harmonics?

At least two modes of pitch perception exist: in one, the fundamental frequency (F0) of harmonic complex tones is estimated using the temporal fine structure (TFS) of individual low-order resolved harmonics; in the other, F0 is derived from the temporal envelope of high-order unresolved harmonics that interact in the auditory periphery. Pitch is typically more accurate in the former than in the latter mode. Another possibility is that pitch can sometimes be coded via the TFS from unresolved harmonics. A recent study supporting this third possibility [Moore et al. (2006a). J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 119, 480-490] based its conclusion on a condition where phase interaction effects (implying unresolved harmonics) accompanied accurate F0 discrimination (implying TFS processing). The present study tests whether these results were influenced by audible distortion products. Experiment 1 replicated the original results, obtained using a low-level background noise. However, experiments 2-4 found no evidence for the use of TFS cues with unresolved harmonics when the background noise level was raised, or the stimulus level was lowered, to render distortion inaudible. Experiment 5 measured the presence and phase dependence of audible distortion products. The results provide no evidence that TFS cues are used to code the F0 of unresolved harmonics.

Psychophysical evidence of damaged active processing mechanisms in Belgian Waterslager Canaries

Belgian Waterslager canaries (BWC), bred for a distinct low-pitched song, have an inherited high-frequency hearing loss associated with hair cell abnormalities. Hair cells near the abneural edge of the papilla, which receive primarily efferent innervation in normal birds, are among the most severely affected. These cells are thought to support nonlinear active processing in the avian ear, though the mechanisms are poorly understood. Here we present psychophysical evidence that suggests degraded active processing in BWC compared to normal-hearing non-BWC. Critical ratios, psychophysical masking patterns and phase effects on masking by harmonic complexes were measured in BWC and non-BWC using operant conditioning procedures. Critical ratios were much larger in BWC than in non-BWC at high frequencies. Psychophysical tuning curves derived from the masking patterns for BWC were broadened at high frequencies. BWC also showed severely reduced phase effects on masking by harmonic complexes compared to non-BWC. As has been hypothesized previously for hearing-impaired humans, these results are consistent with a loss of active processing mechanisms in BWC.

Estimates of compression at low and high frequencies using masking additivity in normal and impaired ears

Auditory compression was estimated at 250 and 4000 Hz by using the additivity of forward masking technique, which measures the effects on signal threshold of combining two temporally nonoverlapping forward maskers. The increase in threshold in the combined-masker condition compared to the individual-masker conditions can be used to estimate compression. The signal was a 250 or 4000 Hz tone burst and the maskers (M1 and M2) were bands of noise. Signal thresholds were measured in the presence of M1 and M2 alone and combined for a range of masker levels. The results were used to derive response functions at each frequency. The procedure was conducted with normal-hearing and hearing-impaired listeners. The results suggest that the response function in normal ears is similar at 250 and 4000 Hz with a mid level compression exponent of about 0.2. However, compression extends over a smaller range of levels at 250 Hz. The results confirm previous estimates of compression using temporal masking curves (TMCs) without assuming a linear off-frequency reference as in the TMC procedure. The impaired ears generally showed less compression. Importantly, some impaired ears showed a linear response at 250 Hz, providing a further indication that low-frequency compression originates in the cochlea.

The pulse-train auditory aftereffect and the perception of rapid amplitude modulations

Prolonged listening to a pulse train with repetition rates around 100 Hz induces a striking aftereffect, whereby subsequently presented sounds are heard with an unusually "metallic" timbre [Rosenblith et al., Science 106, 333-335 (1947)]. The mechanisms responsible for this auditory aftereffect are currently unknown. Whether the aftereffect is related to an alteration of the perception of temporal envelope fluctuations was evaluated. Detection thresholds for sinusoidal amplitude modulation (AM) imposed onto noise-burst carriers were measured for different AM frequencies (50-500 Hz), following the continuous presentation of a periodic pulse train, a temporally jittered pulse train, or an unmodulated noise. AM detection thresholds for AM frequencies of 100 Hz and above were significantly elevated compared to thresholds in quiet, following the presentation of the pulse-train inducers, and both induced a subjective auditory aftereffect. Unmodulated noise, which produced no audible aftereffect, left AM detection thresholds unchanged. Additional experiments revealed that, like the Rosenblith et al. aftereffect, the effect on AM thresholds does not transfer across ears, is not eliminated by protracted training, and can last several tens of seconds. The results suggest that the Rosenblith et al. aftereffect is related to a temporary alteration in the perception of fast temporal envelope fluctuations in sounds.

Representation of auditory-filter phase characteristics in the cortex of human listeners

Harmonic tone complexes with component phases, adjusted using a variant of a method proposed by Schroeder, can produce pure-tone masked thresholds differing by >20 dB. This phenomenon has been qualitatively explained by the phase characteristics of the auditory filters on the basilar membrane, which differently affect the flat envelopes of the Schroeder-phase maskers. We examined the influence of auditory-filter phase characteristics on the neural representation in the auditory cortex by investigating cortical auditory evoked fields (AEFs). We found that the P1m component exhibited larger amplitudes when a long-duration tone was presented in a repeating linearly downward sweeping (Schroeder positive, or m(+)) masker than in a repeating linearly upward sweeping (Schroeder negative, or m(-)) masker. We also examined the neural representation of short-duration tone pulses presented at different temporal positions within a single period of three maskers differing in their component phases (m(+), m(-), and sine phase m(0)). The P1m amplitude varied with the position of the tone pulse in the masker and depended strongly on the masker waveform. The neuromagnetic results in all cases were consistent with the perceptual data obtained with the same stimuli and with results from simulations of neural activity at the output of cochlear preprocessing. These findings demonstrate that phase effects in peripheral auditory processing are accurately reflected up to the level of the auditory cortex.

Differences in loudness of positive and negative Schroeder-phase tone complexes as a function of the fundamental frequency

Tone complexes with positive (m+) and negative (m-) Schroeder phase show large differences in masking efficiency. This study investigated whether the different phase characteristics also affect loudness. Loudness matches between m+ and m- complexes were measured as a function of (1) the fundamental frequency (f0) for different frequency bands in normal-hearing and hearing-impaired subjects, and (2) intensity level in normal-hearing subjects. In normal-hearing subjects, the level of the m+ stimulus was up to 10 dB higher than that of the corresponding m- stimulus at the point of equal loudness. The largest differences in loudness were found for levels between 20 and 60 dB SL. In hearing-impaired listeners, the difference was reduced, indicating the relevance of active cochlear mechanisms. Loudness matches of m+ and m- stimuli to a common noise reference (experiment 3) showed differences as a function of f0 that were in line with direct comparisons from experiment 1 and indicated additionally that the effect is mainly due to the specific internal processing of m+. The findings are roughly consistent with studies pertaining to masking efficiency and can probably not be explained by current loudness models, supporting the need for incorporating more realistic cochlea simulations in future loudness models.

Comparison of the roex and gammachirp filters as representations of the auditory filter

Although the rounded-exponential (roex) filter has been successfully used to represent the magnitude response of the auditory filter, recent studies with the roex(p, w, t) filter reveal two serious problems: the fits to notched-noise masking data are somewhat unstable unless the filter is reduced to a physically unrealizable form, and there is no time-domain version of the roex(p, w, t) filter to support modeling of the perception of complex sounds. This paper describes a compressive gammachirp (cGC) filter with the same architecture as the roex(p, w, t) which can be implemented in the time domain. The gain and asymmetry of this parallel cGC filter are shown to be comparable to those of the roex(p, w, t) filter, but the fits to masking data are still somewhat unstable. The roex(p, w, t) and parallel cGC filters were also compared with the cascade cGC filter [Patterson et al., J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 114, 1529-1542 (2003)], which was found to provide an equivalent fit with 25% fewer coefficients. Moreover, the fits were stable. The advantage of the cascade cGC filter appears to derive from its parsimonious representation of the high-frequency side of the filter. It is concluded that cGC filters offer better prospects than roex filters for the representation of the auditory filter.

Temporal masking curves for hearing-impaired listeners

The decay of forward masking was investigated for three subjects with moderate sensorineural hearing loss. For such subjects, compression on the basilar membrane (BM) is thought to be largely absent, enabling one to determine the decay of masking without the influence of compression. Temporal masking curves (TMCs), plots of the masker level at threshold against delay between masker offset and signal onset, were measured for delays of 0, 15, 30, 45, 60, and 75 ms, for signal frequencies, fs, of 500, 1000, 2000, 4000, and 6000 Hz. Masker frequencies were 0.5, 0.8, 1.0, 1.15, and 1.3 times fs. Most of the TMCs were well fitted with single-segment straight lines, which, except for high masker levels, were roughly parallel for each fs, supporting the belief that BM compression was largely absent in these subjects. However, the slopes of the TMCs were greater for fs = 500 and 1000 Hz than for higher frequencies, which may indicate that the decay of forward masking is not the same for all signal frequencies. The results suggest that it may not be valid to infer BM compression at low signal frequencies by using a reference TMC for a high fs.

Phase effects in masking by harmonic complexes in birds

Masking by harmonic complexes depends on the frequency content of the masker and its phase spectrum. Harmonic complexes created with negative Schroeder phases (component phases decreasing with increasing frequency) produce more masking than those with positive Schroeder phases (increasing phase) in humans, but not in birds. The masking differences in humans have been attributed to interactions between the masker phase spectrum and the phase characteristic of the basilar membrane. In birds, the similarity in masking by positive and negative Schroeder maskers, and reduced masking by cosine-phase maskers (constant phase), suggests a phase characteristic that does not change much along the basilar papilla. To evaluate this possibility, the rate of phase change across masker bandwidth was varied by systematically altering the Schroeder algorithm. Humans and three species of birds detected tones added in phase to a single component of a harmonic complex. As observed in earlier studies, the minimum amount of masking in humans occurred for positive phase gradients. However, minimum masking in birds occurred for a shallow negative phase gradient. These results suggest a cochlear delay in birds that is reduced compared to that found in humans, probably related to the shorter avian basilar epithelia.

Frequency discrimination of complex tones; assessing the role of component resolvability and temporal fine structure

Thresholds for discriminating the fundamental frequency (FO) of a complex tone, FODLs, are small when low harmonics are present, but increase when the number of the lowest harmonic, N, is above eight. To assess whether the relatively small FODLs for N in the range 8-10 are based on (partly) resolved harmonics or on temporal fine structure information, FODLs were measured as a function of N for tones with three successive harmonics which were added either in cosine or alternating phase. The center frequency was 2000 Hz, and N was varied by changing the mean FO. A background noise was used to mask combination tones. The value of FO was roved across trials to force subjects to make within-trial comparisons. N was roved by +/- 1 for every stimulus, to prevent subjects from using excitation pattern cues. FODLs were not influenced by component phase for N= 6 or 7, but were smaller for cosine than for alternating phase once N exceeded 7, suggesting that temporal fine structure plays a role in this range. When the center frequency was increased to 5000 Hz, performance was much worse for low N, suggesting that phase locking is important for obtaining low FODLs with resolved harmonics.

The effects of neural synchronization and peripheral compression on the acoustic-reflex threshold

This study investigates the acoustic reflex threshold (ART) dependency on stimulus phase utilizing low-level reflex audiometry [Neumann et al., Audiol. Neuro-Otol. 1, 359-369 (1996)]. The goal is to obtain optimal broadband stimuli for elicitation of the acoustic reflex and to obtain objective determinations of cochlear hearing loss. Three types of tone complexes with different phase characteristics were investigated: A stimulus that compensates for basilar-membrane dispersion, thus causing a large overall neural synchrony (basilar-membrane tone complex-BMTC), the temporally inversed stimulus (iBMTC), and random-phase tone complexes (rTC). The ARTs were measured in eight normal-hearing and six hearing-impaired subjects. Five different conditions of peak amplitude and stimulus repetition rate were used for each stimulus type. The results of the present study suggest that the ART is influenced by at least two different factors: (a) the degree of synchrony of neural activity across frequency, and (b) the fast-acting compression mechanism in the cochlea that is reduced in the case of a sensorineural hearing loss. The results allow a clear distinction of the two subjects groups based on the different ART for the utilized types and conditions of the stimuli. These differences might be useful for objective recruitment detection in clinical diagnostics.

Comparing different estimates of cochlear compression in listeners with normal and impaired hearing

A loss of cochlear compression may underlie many of the difficulties experienced by hearing-impaired listeners. Two behavioral forward-masking paradigms that have been used to estimate the magnitude of cochlear compression are growth of masking (GOM) and temporal masking (TM). The aim of this study was to determine whether these two measures produce within-subjects results that are consistent across a range of signal frequencies and, if so, to compare them in terms of reliability or efficiency. GOM and TM functions were measured in a group of five normal-hearing and five hearing-impaired listeners at signal frequencies of 1000, 2000, and 4000 Hz. Compression values were derived from the masking data and confidence intervals were constructed around these estimates. Both measures produced comparable estimates of compression, but both measures have distinct advantages and disadvantages, so that the more appropriate measure depends on factors such as the frequency region of interest and the degree of hearing loss. Because of the long testing times needed, neither measure is suitable for clinical use in its current form.

Estimates of auditory filter phase response at and below characteristic frequency

Animal studies in basal cochlear regions have shown that basilar-membrane phase curvature (or rate of change of group delay with frequency) is negative around characteristic frequency (CF), but near zero well below CF. This study examined whether psychophysical masking experiments in humans show the same difference between on- and off-CF phase curvature. Masked thresholds were measured for a 2-kHz signal in the presence of harmonic tone complex maskers with a fundamental frequency of 100 Hz, band-limited between 200 and 1400 Hz (off-frequency masker) or between 1400 and 2600 Hz (on-frequency masker). The results from four normal-hearing listeners are consistent with predictions from animal physiological data: negative phase curvature is found for the on-frequency masker, whereas the phase curvature for the off-frequency masker is near zero. The method and results provide a strong test for the temporal response of computational models of human cochlear filtering.

Masker phase effects in normal-hearing and hearing-impaired listeners: evidence for peripheral compression at low signal frequencies

The presence of cochlear-based compression at low frequencies was investigated by measuring phase effects in harmonic maskers. In normal-hearing listeners, the amount of masking produced depends strongly on the phase relationships between the individual masker components. This effect is thought to be determined primarily by properties of the cochlea, including the phase dispersion and compressive input-output function of the basilar membrane. Thresholds for signals of 250 and 1000 Hz were measured in harmonic maskers with fundamental frequencies of 12.5 and 100 Hz as a function of the masker phase curvature. Results from 12 listeners with sensorineural hearing loss showed reduced masker phase effects, when compared with data from normal-hearing listeners, at both 250- and 1000-Hz signal frequencies. The effects of hearing impairment on phase-related masking differences were not well simulated in normal-hearing listeners by an additive white noise, suggesting that the effects of hearing impairment are not simply due to reduced sensation level. Maximum differences in masked threshold were correlated with auditory filter bandwidths at the respective frequencies, suggesting that both measures are affected by a common underlying mechanism, presumably related to cochlear outer hair cell function. The results also suggest that normal peripheral compression remains strong even at 250 Hz.

Phase effects in masking: within- versus across-channel processes

The effects of bandwidth and component phase on masking were investigated using 200-ms narrowband (1-ERB(N)) and broadband (5-ERB(N)) cosine-phase (CP) and random-phase (RP) harmonic complex maskers, centered at 1 or 6 kHz. A continuous notched-noise was used to restrict off-frequency listening. The masker fundamental frequency (F0) was 25 Hz. In experiment 1, thresholds were measured for sinusoidal signals at 1 and 6 kHz, gated with the maskers. Thresholds were lower in the CP than in the RP masker, for both bandwidths, but the effect was markedly greater for the wider bandwidth. For the CP maskers, thresholds were markedly lower for the 5-ERB(N) than for the 1-ERB(N) bandwidth; for the RP maskers, there was a small effect in the opposite direction. Experiment 2 used 1- and 6-kHz CP maskers. The masker components in the ERB(N) around the signal frequency were presented to one ear, and the remaining components were presented contralaterally. Thresholds were much higher than when all components were presented to the same ear, and were higher than for the 1-ERB(N) masker alone, suggesting that the low thresholds for broadband monaural presentation do not depend on "high level" across-channel comparisons. Simultaneous masked thresholds could be predicted well using a model based on a simulated auditory filter, a level-dependent compressive nonlinearity, and a sliding temporal integrator; it was not necessary to assume the involvement of across-channel processes or of selective listening in the masker dips.

Forward masking additivity and auditory compression at low and high frequencies

The additivity of nonsimultaneous masking can be used as a measure of nonlinearity in the auditory system. For example, two equally effective forward maskers should produce 3 dB of additional masking when they are combined, assuming linearity with respect to intensity. A combined effect greater than this (excess masking) indicates compression. In the present experiments, the signal was a 10-ms pure tone presented 20 ms after a 200-ms narrowband noise masker and/or immediately after a 20-ms narrow-band noise masker. The signal frequency was 250, 500, or 4000 Hz. The signal threshold produced by combining two equally effective maskers was measured. At all three frequencies, little excess masking was observed for a signal 10 dB above absolute threshold, indicating linear additivity (no compression). At signal levels 30 dB above absolute threshold, excess masking was observed at all three frequencies. The estimated compression exponents were 0.29 at 250 Hz, 0.34 at 500 Hz, and 0.17 at 4000 Hz. In contrast with physiological studies on other mammals, the present results provide evidence for substantial compression at low frequencies in humans.

Squared error as a measure of perceived phase distortion

Based on two well-known auditory models, it is investigated whether the squared error between an original signal and a phase-distorted signal is a perceptually relevant measure for distortions in the Fourier phase spectrum of periodic signals obtained from speech. Both the performance of phase vector quantizers and the direct relationship between the squared error and two perceptual distortion measures are studied. The results indicate that for small values the squared error correlates well to the perceptual measures. However, for large errors, an increase in squared error does not, on average, lead to an increase in the perceptual measures. Empirical rate-perceptual distortion curves and listening tests confirm that, for low to medium codebook sizes, the average perceived distortion does not decrease with increasing codebook size when the squared error is used as encoding criterion.

Basilar-membrane responses to multicomponent (Schroeder-phase) signals: understanding intensity effects

Harmonic complexes comprised of the same spectral components in either positive-Schroeder (+Schr) or negative-Schroeder (-Schr) phase [see Schroeder, IEEE Trans. Inf. Theory 16, 85-89 (1970)] have identical long-term spectra and similar waveform envelopes. However, localized patterns of basilar-membrane (BM) excitation can be quite different in response to these two stimuli. Measurements in chinchillas showed more modulated (peakier) BM excitation for +Schr than -Schr complexes [Recio and Rhode, J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 108, 2281-2298 (2000)]. In the current study, laser velocimetry was used to examine BM responses at a location tuned to approximately 17 kHz in the basal turn of the guinea-pig cochlea, for +Schr and -Schr complexes with a 203-Hz fundamental frequency and including 101 equal-amplitude components from 2031 to 22,344 Hz. At 35-dB SPL, +Schr response waveforms showed greater amplitude modulation than -Schr responses. With increasing stimulation level, internal modulation decreased for both complexes. To understand the observed phenomena quantitatively, responses were predicted on the basis of a linearized model of the cochlea. Prediction was based on an "indirect impulse response" measured in the same animal. Response waveforms for Schroeder-phase signals were accurately predicted, provided that the level of the indirect impulse used in prediction closely matched the level of the Schroeder-phase stimulus. This result confirms that the underlying model, which originally was developed for noise stimuli, is valid for stimuli that produce completely different response waveforms. Moreover, it justifies explanation of cochlear filtering (i.e., differential treatment of different frequencies) in terms of a linear system.

Psychophysical evidence for auditory compression at low characteristic frequencies

Psychophysical estimates of compression often assume that the basilar-membrane response to frequencies well below characteristic frequency (CF) is linear. Two techniques for estimating compression are described here that do not depend on this assumption at low CFs. In experiment 1, growth of forward masking was measured for both on- and off-frequency pure-tone maskers for pure-tone signals at 250, 500, and 4000 Hz. The on- and off-frequency masking functions at 250 and 500 Hz were just as shallow as the on-frequency masking function at 4000 Hz. In experiment 2, the forward masker level required to mask a fixed low-level signal was measured as a function of the masker-signal interval. The slopes of these functions did not differ between signal frequencies of 250 and 4000 Hz for the on-frequency maskers. At 250 Hz, the slope for the 150-Hz masker was almost as steep as that for the on-frequency masker, whereas at 4000 Hz the slope for the 2400-Hz masker was much shallower than that for the on-frequency masker. The results suggest that there is substantial compression, of around 0.2-0.3 dB/dB, at low CFs in the human auditory system. Furthermore, the results suggest that at low CFs compression does not vary greatly with stimulation frequency relative to CF.
