Observation of spin-orbit magnetoresistance in metallic thin films on magnetic insulators

Fourfold Anisotropic Magnetoresistance of L1_{0} FePt Due to Relaxation Time Anisotropy

Experimental measurements show that the angular dependence of the anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR) in L1_{0} ordered FePt epitaxial films on the current orientation and magnetization direction is a superposition of the corresponding dependences of twofold and fourfold symmetries. The twofold AMR exhibits a strong dependence on the current orientation, whereas the fourfold term only depends on the magnetization direction in the crystal and is independent of the current orientation. First-principles calculations reveal that the fourfold AMR arises from the relaxation time anisotropy due to the variation of the density of states near the Fermi energy under rotation of the magnetization. This relaxation time anisotropy is a universal property in ferromagnetic metals and determines other anisotropic physical properties that are observable in experiment.

Intrinsic Mechanism for Anisotropic Magnetoresistance and Experimental Confirmation in Co_{x}Fe_{1-x} Single-Crystal Films

Using first-principles transport calculations, we predict that the anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR) of single-crystal Co_{x}Fe_{1-x} alloys is strongly dependent on the current orientation and alloy concentration. An intrinsic mechanism for AMR is found to arise from the band crossing due to magnetization-dependent symmetry protection. These special k points can be shifted towards or away from the Fermi energy by varying the alloy composition and hence the exchange splitting, thus allowing AMR tunability. The prediction is confirmed by delicate transport measurements, which further reveal a reciprocal relationship of the longitudinal and transverse resistivities along different crystal axes.

Negative spin Hall magnetoresistance of normal metal/ferromagnet bilayers

Interconversion between charge and spin through spin-orbit coupling lies at the heart of condensed-matter physics. In normal metal/ferromagnet bilayers, a concerted action of the interconversions, the spin Hall effect and its inverse effect of normal metals, results in spin Hall magnetoresistance, whose sign is always positive regardless of the sign of spin Hall conductivity of normal metals. Here we report that the spin Hall magnetoresistance of Ta/NiFe bilayers is negative, necessitating an additional interconversion process. Our theory shows that the interconversion owing to interfacial spin-orbit coupling at normal metal/ferromagnet interfaces can give rise to negative spin Hall magnetoresistance. Given that recent studies found the conversion from charge currents to spin currents at normal metal/ferromagnet interfaces, our work provides a missing proof of its reciprocal spin-current-to-charge-current conversion at same interface. Our result suggests that interfacial spin-orbit coupling effect can dominate over bulk effects, thereby demanding interface engineering for advanced spintronics devices.

Spin-charge conversion in NiMnSb Heusler alloy films

Half-metallic Heusler alloys are attracting considerable attention because of their unique half-metallic band structures, which exhibit high spin polarization and yield huge magnetoresistance ratios. Besides serving as ferromagnetic electrodes, Heusler alloys also have the potential to host spin-charge conversion. Here, we report on the spin-charge conversion effect in the prototypical Heusler alloy NiMnSb. An unusual charge signal was observed with a sign change at low temperature, which can be manipulated by film thickness and ordering structure. It is found that the spin-charge conversion has two contributions. First, the interfacial contribution causes a negative voltage signal, which is almost constant versus temperature. The second contribution is temperature dependent because it is dominated by minority states due to thermally excited magnons in the bulk part of the film. This work provides a pathway for the manipulation of spin-charge conversion in ferromagnetic metals by interface-bulk engineering for spintronic devices.

Theory of Spin Hall Magnetoresistance from a Microscopic Perspective

We present a theory of the spin Hall magnetoresistance of metals in contact with magnetic insulators. We express the spin mixing conductances, which govern the phenomenology of the effect, in terms of the microscopic parameters of the interface and the spin-spin correlation functions of the local moments on the surface of the magnetic insulator. The magnetic-field and temperature dependence of the spin mixing conductances leads to a rich behavior of the resistance due to an interplay between the Hanle effect and the spin mixing at the interface. We describe an unusual negative magnetoresistance originating from a nonlocal Hanle effect. Our theory provides a useful tool for understanding the experiments on heavy metals in contact with magnetic insulators of different kinds, and it enables the spin Hall magnetoresistance effect to be used as a technique to study magnetism at interfaces.

Chiral spin ordering of electron gas in solids with broken time reversal symmetry

In this work we manifest that an electrostatic disorder in conducting systems with broken time reversal symmetry universally leads to a chiral ordering of the electron gas giving rise to skyrmion-like textures in spatial distribution of the electron spin density. We describe a microscopic mechanism underlying the formation of the equilibrium chiral spin textures in two-dimensional systems with spin-orbit interaction and exchange spin splitting. We have obtained analytical expressions for spin-density response functions and have analyzed both local and non-local spin response to electrostatic perturbations for systems with parabolic-like and Dirac electron spectra. With the proposed theory we come up with a concept of controlling spin chirality by electrical means.

Metal Oxide Nanocomposites: A Perspective from Strain, Defect, and Interface

Vertically aligned nanocomposite thin films with ordered two phases, grown epitaxially on substrates, have attracted tremendous interest in the past decade. These unique nanostructured composite thin films with large vertical interfacial area, controllable vertical lattice strain, and defects provide an intriguing playground, allowing for the manipulation of a variety of functional properties of the materials via the interplay among strain, defect, and interface. This field has evolved from basic growth and characterization to functionality tuning as well as potential applications in energy conversion and information technology. Here, the remarkable progress achieved in vertically aligned nanocomposite thin films from a perspective of tuning functionalities through control of strain, defect, and interface is summarized.

Interface-Induced Anomalous Hall Conductivity in a Confined Metal

The mature silicon technological platform is actively explored for spintronic applications. Metal silicides are an integral part of the Si technology used as interconnects, gate electrodes, and diffusion barriers; their epitaxial integration with Si results in premier contacts. Recent studies highlight the exceptional role of electronic discontinuities at interfaces in the spin-dependent transport properties. Here, we report a new type of Hall conductivity driven by sharp interfaces of Eu silicide, an antiferromagnetic metal, sandwiched between two insulators - Si and SiO _x. Quasi-ballistic transport probes spin-orbit coupling at the interfaces, in particular, charge-spin interconversion. Transverse magnetic field results in anomalous Hall effect signals of an unusual line shape. The interplay between opposite-sign signals from the two interfaces allows efficient control over the magnitude and sign of the overall effect. Selective engineering of interfaces singles out a particular spin signal. The two-channel nature of the effect and its high tunability offer new functional possibilities for future spintronic devices.
