Stretchable Electrodes for Interconnects in Soft Electronics

Soft electronics have significantly enhanced user convenience and data accuracy in wearable devices, implantable devices, and human-machine interfaces. However, a persistent challenge in their development has been the disconnection between the rigid and soft components of devices due to the substantial difference in modulus and stretchability. To address this issue, establishing a durable and flexible connection that smoothly links components of varying stiffness to signal-capturing sections with a lower stiffness is essential. In this study, we developed a novel stretchable interconnect that strongly adheres to various materials, facilitating electrical connections effortlessly by applying minimal finger pressure. Capable of stretching up to 1000% while maintaining electrical integrity, this interconnect proves its applicability across multiple domains, including electrocardiogram (ECG), electromyography (EMG), and stretchable light-emitting diode (LED) circuits. Its versatility is further demonstrated through its compatibility with various manufacturing techniques such as 3D printing, painting, and spin coating, highlighting its adaptability in soft electronics.

Direct Laser Writing: From Materials Synthesis and Conversion to Electronic Device Processing

Direct Laser Writing (DLW) has been increasingly selected as a microfabrication route for efficient, cost-effective, high-resolution material synthesis and conversion. Concurrently, lasers participate in the patterning and assembly of functional geometries in several fields of application, of which electronics stand out. In this review, recent advances and strategies based on DLW for electronics microfabrication are surveyed and outlined, based on laser material growth strategies. First, the main DLW parameters influencing material synthesis and transformation mechanisms are summarized, aimed at selective, tailored writing of conductive and semiconducting materials. Additive and transformative DLW processing mechanisms are discussed, to open space to explore several categories of materials directly synthesized or transformed for electronics microfabrication. These include metallic conductors, metal oxides, transition metal chalcogenides and carbides, laser-induced graphene, and their mixtures. By accessing a wide range of material types, DLW-based electronic applications are explored, including processing components, energy harvesting and storage, sensing, and bioelectronics. The expanded capability of lasers to participate in multiple fabrication steps at different implementation levels, from material engineering to device processing, indicates their future applicability to next-generation electronics, where more accessible, green microfabrication approaches integrate lasers as comprehensive tools.

Upgrading Polyolefin Plastic Waste into Multifunctional Porous Graphene using Silicone-Assisted Direct Laser Writing

The widespread use of plastics, especially polyolefin including polyethylene and polypropylene, has led to severe environmental crises. Chemical recycling, a promising solution for extracting value from plastic waste, however, is underutilized due to its complexity. Here, a simple approach, silicone-assisted direct laser writing (SA-DLW) is developed, to upgrade polyolefin plastic waste into multifunctional porous graphene, called laser-induced graphene (LIG). This method involves infiltrating polyolefins with silicone, which retards ablation during the DLW process and supplies additional carbon atoms, as confirmed by experimental and molecular dynamic results. A remarkable conversion yield of 38.3% is achieved. The upgraded LIG exhibited a porous structure and high conductivity, which is utilized for the fabrication of diverse energy and electronic devices with commendable performance. Furthermore, the SA-DLW technique is versatile for upgrading plastic waste in various types and forms. Upgrading plastic waste in the form of fabric has significantly simplified pre-treatment. Finally, a wearable flex sensor is fabricated on the non-woven fabric of a discarded medical mask, which is applied for gesture monitoring. This work offers a simple but effective solution to upgrade plastic waste into valuable products, contributing to the mitigation of environmental challenges posed by plastic pollution.

Stimulation of Biological Structures on the Nanoscale Using Interfaces with Large Built-In Spontaneous Polarizations

The electric potential stimulation of biological structures in aqueous environments is well-known to be a result of the gating of voltage-gated ion channels. Such voltage-gated ion channels are ubiquitous in the membranes of a wide variety of cells and they play central roles in a wide variety of sensing mechanisms and neuronal functions in biological systems. Experimental studies of ion-channel gating are frequently conducted using path-clamp techniques by placing a cumbersome external electrode in the vicinity of the extracellular side of the ion channel. Recently, it has been demonstrated that laser-induced polarization of nanoscale quantum dots can produce voltage sufficient to gate voltage-gated ion channels. This study specifically focuses on a new method of gating voltage-gated ion channels using 2D structures made of materials exhibiting large naturally occurring spontaneous polarizations, thereby eliminating the need for an external electrode or an illuminating laser. The work presents the use of self-polarizing semiconductor flakes, namely, 2H-SiC, ZnO, and GaN, to produce electric potential that is sufficient to gate voltage-gated ion channels when existing in proximity to it.

Exploring Present and Future Directions in Nano-Enhanced Optoelectronic Neuromodulation

Electrical neuromodulation has achieved significant translational advancements, including the development of deep brain stimulators for managing neural disorders and vagus nerve stimulators for seizure treatment. Optoelectronics, in contrast to wired electrical systems, offers the leadless feature that guides multisite and high spatiotemporal neural system targeting, ensuring high specificity and precision in translational therapies known as "photoelectroceuticals". This Account provides a concise overview of developments in novel optoelectronic nanomaterials that are engineered through innovative molecular, chemical, and nanostructure designs to facilitate neural interfacing with high efficiency and minimally invasive implantation.This Account outlines the progress made both within our laboratory and across the broader scientific community, with particular attention to implications in materials innovation strategies, studying bioelectrical activation with spatiotemporal methods, and applications in regenerative medicine. In materials innovation, we highlight a nongenetic, biocompatible, and minimally invasive approach for neuromodulation that spans various length scales, from single neurons to nerve tissues using nanosized particles and monolithic membranes. Furthermore, our discussion exposes the critical unresolved questions in the field, including mechanisms of interaction at the nanobio interface, the precision of cellular or tissue targeting, and integration into existing neural networks with high spatiotemporal modulation. In addition, we present the challenges and pressing needs for long-term stability and biocompatibility, scalability for clinical applications, and the development of noninvasive monitoring and control systems.In addressing the existing challenges in the field of nanobio interfaces, particularly for neural applications, we envisage promising strategic directions that could significantly advance this burgeoning domain. This involves a deeper theoretical understanding of nanobiointerfaces, where simulations and experimental validations on how nanomaterials interact spatiotemporally with biological systems are crucial. The development of more durable materials is vital for prolonged applications in dynamic neural interfaces, and the ability to manipulate neural activity with high specificity and spatial resolution, paves the way for targeting individual neurons or specific neural circuits. Additionally, integrating these interfaces with advanced control systems, possibly leveraging artificial intelligence and machine learning algorithms and programming dynamically responsive materials designs, could significantly ease the implementation of stimulation and recording. These innovations hold the potential to introduce novel treatment modalities for a wide range of neurological and systemic disorders.

Direct Laser Processing and Functionalizing PI/PDMS Composites for an On-Demand, Programmable, Recyclable Device Platform

Skin-interfaced high-sensitive biosensing systems to detect electrophysiological and biochemical signals have shown great potential in personal health monitoring and disease management. However, the integration of 3D porous nanostructures for improved sensitivity and various functional composites for signal transduction/processing/transmission often relies on different materials and complex fabrication processes, leading to weak interfaces prone to failure upon fatigue or mechanical deformations. The integrated system also needs additional adhesive to strongly conform to the human skin, which can also cause irritation, alignment issues, and motion artifacts. This work introduces a skin-attachable, reprogrammable, multifunctional, adhesive device patch fabricated by simple and low-cost laser scribing of an adhesive composite with polyimide powders and amine-based ethoxylated polyethylenimine dispersed in the silicone elastomer. The obtained laser-induced graphene in the adhesive composite can be further selectively functionalized with conductive nanomaterials or enzymes for enhanced electrical conductivity or selective sensing of various sweat biomarkers. The possible combination of the sensors for real-time biofluid analysis and electrophysiological signal monitoring with RF energy harvesting and communication promises a standalone stretchable adhesive device platform based on the same material system and fabrication process.

E-Tattoos: Toward Functional but Imperceptible Interfacing with Human Skin

The human body continuously emits physiological and psychological information from head to toe. Wearable electronics capable of noninvasively and accurately digitizing this information without compromising user comfort or mobility have the potential to revolutionize telemedicine, mobile health, and both human-machine or human-metaverse interactions. However, state-of-the-art wearable electronics face limitations regarding wearability and functionality due to the mechanical incompatibility between conventional rigid, planar electronics and soft, curvy human skin surfaces. E-Tattoos, a unique type of wearable electronics, are defined by their ultrathin and skin-soft characteristics, which enable noninvasive and comfortable lamination on human skin surfaces without causing obstruction or even mechanical perception. This review article offers an exhaustive exploration of e-tattoos, accounting for their materials, structures, manufacturing processes, properties, functionalities, applications, and remaining challenges. We begin by summarizing the properties of human skin and their effects on signal transmission across the e-tattoo-skin interface. Following this is a discussion of the materials, structural designs, manufacturing, and skin attachment processes of e-tattoos. We classify e-tattoo functionalities into electrical, mechanical, optical, thermal, and chemical sensing, as well as wound healing and other treatments. After discussing energy harvesting and storage capabilities, we outline strategies for the system integration of wireless e-tattoos. In the end, we offer personal perspectives on the remaining challenges and future opportunities in the field.

Silicon-containing nanomedicine and biomaterials: materials chemistry, multi-dimensional design, and biomedical application

The invention of silica-based bioactive glass in the late 1960s has sparked significant interest in exploring a wide range of silicon-containing biomaterials from the macroscale to the nanoscale. Over the past few decades, these biomaterials have been extensively explored for their potential in diverse biomedical applications, considering their remarkable bioactivity, excellent biocompatibility, facile surface functionalization, controllable synthesis, etc. However, to expedite the clinical translation and the unexpected utilization of silicon-composed nanomedicine and biomaterials, it is highly desirable to achieve a thorough comprehension of their characteristics and biological effects from an overall perspective. In this review, we provide a comprehensive discussion on the state-of-the-art progress of silicon-composed biomaterials, including their classification, characteristics, fabrication methods, and versatile biomedical applications. Additionally, we highlight the multi-dimensional design of both pure and hybrid silicon-composed nanomedicine and biomaterials and their intrinsic biological effects and interactions with biological systems. Their extensive biomedical applications span from drug delivery and bioimaging to therapeutic interventions and regenerative medicine, showcasing the significance of their rational design and fabrication to meet specific requirements and optimize their theranostic performance. Additionally, we offer insights into the future prospects and potential challenges regarding silicon-composed nanomedicine and biomaterials. By shedding light on these exciting research advances, we aspire to foster further progress in the biomedical field and drive the development of innovative silicon-composed nanomedicine and biomaterials with transformative applications in biomedicine.

The Use of Semiconductor Quantum Dots with Large, Built-In Spontaneous Polarizations for the Electric Potential Stimulation of Biological Structures on the Nanoscale

The feasibility of using quantum dots fabricated from materials with built-in spontaneous polarizations for the electric potential stimulation of biological structures in aqueous environments is evaluated by modeling the electric potential produced in the vicinity of such quantum dots. By modeling the external potential created by the spherical nanoscale region of a material with spontaneous polarization, and by considering Debye screening in the vicinity of the quantum dot, it is found that electric potential around these nanostructures is sufficient to cause physiological effects in selected biological systems. These findings suggest that quantum dots may be used in lieu of quantum dots with polarizations produced using an external laser to cause physiological effects. The elimination of the external laser represents a significant benefit of using quantum dots with permanent, built-in spontaneous polarization.

Laser-induced immobilization of an amorphous iron-phosphate/Fe3O4 composite on nickel foam for efficient water oxidation

A laser-induced immobilization strategy is applied to prepare an amorphous iron-phosphate/Fe3O4 (L-FePO) composite on a nickel foam (NF) support. By laser-irradiating an iron hydrogen phosphate (FeHP) precursor, a melting and oxidation process leads to the generation of L-FePO with hierarchical pores and an amorphous structure. L-FePO shows exceptional electrocatalytic performance for the OER in an alkaline electrolyte, demonstrating an overpotential of 256 mV at 100 mA cm-2, a Tafel slope of 71 mV dec-1, and good stability over 100 h. The active Fe3O4, partially dissolved phosphate, and newly formed FeOOH species provide abundant active sites, contributing to the excellent OER performance.

Integrated Device Based on a Sudomotor Nanomaterial for Sweat Detection

The compositions of sweat and blood are related. Therefore, sweat is an ideal noninvasive test body fluid that could replace blood for linear detection of many biomarkers, especially blood glucose. However, access to sweat samples remains limited to physical exercise, thermal stimulation, or electrical stimulation. Despite intensive research, a continuous, innocuous, and stable method for sweat stimulation and detection has not yet been developed. In this study, a nanomaterial for a sweat-stimulating gel based on the transdermal drug delivery system is presented, which transports acetylcholine chloride into the receptors of sweat glands to achieve the function of biological stimulation of skin sweating. The nanomaterial was applied to a suitable integrated sweat glucose detection device for noninvasive blood glucose monitoring. The total amount of evaporated sweat enabled by the nanomaterial is up to 35 μL·cm^-2 for 24 h, and the device detects up to 17.65 μM glucose under optimal conditions, showing stable performance regardless of the user's activity level. In addition, the in vivo test was performed and compared with several studies and products, which showed excellent detection performance and osmotic relationship. The nanomaterial and associated integrated device represent a significant advance in continuous passive sweat stimulation and noninvasive sweat glucose measurement for point-of-care applications.

Recent Advances in Nanomaterials Used for Wearable Electronics

In recent decades, thriving Internet of Things (IoT) technology has had a profound impact on people's lifestyles through extensive information interaction between humans and intelligent devices. One promising application of IoT is the continuous, real-time monitoring and analysis of body or environmental information by devices worn on or implanted inside the body. This research area, commonly referred to as wearable electronics or wearables, represents a new and rapidly expanding interdisciplinary field. Wearable electronics are devices with specific electronic functions that must be flexible and stretchable. Various novel materials have been proposed in recent years to meet the technical challenges posed by this field, which exhibit significant potential for use in different wearable applications. This article reviews recent progress in the development of emerging nanomaterial-based wearable electronics, with a specific focus on their flexible substrates, conductors, and transducers. Additionally, we discuss the current state-of-the-art applications of nanomaterial-based wearable electronics and provide an outlook on future research directions in this field.

A universal interface for plug-and-play assembly of stretchable devices

Stretchable hybrid devices have enabled high-fidelity implantable^1-3 and on-skin^4-6 monitoring of physiological signals. These devices typically contain soft modules that match the mechanical requirements in humans^7,8 and soft robots^9,10, rigid modules containing Si-based microelectronics^11,12 and protective encapsulation modules^13,14. To make such a system mechanically compliant, the interconnects between the modules need to tolerate stress concentration that may limit their stretching and ultimately cause debonding failure^15-17. Here, we report a universal interface that can reliably connect soft, rigid and encapsulation modules together to form robust and highly stretchable devices in a plug-and-play manner. The interface, consisting of interpenetrating polymer and metal nanostructures, connects modules by simply pressing without using pastes. Its formation is depicted by a biphasic network growth model. Soft-soft modules joined by this interface achieved 600% and 180% mechanical and electrical stretchability, respectively. Soft and rigid modules can also be electrically connected using the above interface. Encapsulation on soft modules with this interface is strongly adhesive with an interfacial toughness of 0.24 N mm^-1. As a proof of concept, we use this interface to assemble stretchable devices for in vivo neuromodulation and on-skin electromyography, with high signal quality and mechanical resistance. We expect such a plug-and-play interface to simplify and accelerate the development of on-skin and implantable stretchable devices.

Laser Induced Coffee-Ring Structure through Solid-Liquid Transition for Color Printing

Metallic micro/nano structures with special physicochemical properties have undergone rapid development owing to their broad applications in micromachines and microdevices. Ultrafast laser processing is generally accepted as an effective technology for functional structures manufacture, however, the controllable fabrication of specific metallic micro/nano structures remains a challenge. Here, this work proposes a novel strategy of laser induced transient solid-liquid transition to fabricate unique structures. Through modulating the transient state of metal from solid to liquid phase using the initial pulse excitation, the subsequent ultrafast pulse-induced recoil pressure can suppress the plasma emission and removal of liquid phase metals, resulting in the controllable fabrication of coffee-ring structures. The solid-liquid transition dynamics, which related with the transient reflectivity and plasma intensity, are revealed by established two temperature model coupled with molecular dynamics model. The coffee-ring structure exhibits tunable structure color owing to various optical response, which can be used for color printing with large scale and high resolution. This work provides a promising strategy for fabricating functional micro/nano structures, which can greatly broaden the potential applications.

Multimodal Characterization of Cardiac Organoids Using Integrations of Pressure-Sensitive Transistor Arrays with Three-Dimensional Liquid Metal Electrodes

Herein, we present an unconventional method for multimodal characterization of three-dimensional cardiac organoids. This method can monitor and control the mechanophysiological parameters of organoids within a single device. In this method, local pressure distributions of human-induced pluripotent stem-cell-derived cardiac organoids are visualized spatiotemporally by an active-matrix array of pressure-sensitive transistors. This array is integrated with three-dimensional electrodes formed by the high-resolution printing of liquid metal. These liquid-metal electrodes are inserted inside an organoid to form the intraorganoid interface for simultaneous electrophysiological recording and stimulation. The low mechanical modulus and low impedance of the liquid-metal electrodes are compatible with organoids' soft biological tissue, which enables stable electric pacing at low thresholds. In contrast to conventional electrophysiological methods, this measurement of a cardiac organoid's beating pressures enabled simultaneous treatment of electrical therapeutics using a single device without any interference between the pressure signals and electrical pulses from pacing electrodes, even in wet organoid conditions.

Laser-scribed conductive, photoactive transition metal oxide on soft elastomers for Janus on-skin electronics and soft actuators

Laser-assisted fabrication of conductive materials on flexible substrates has attracted intense interests because of its simplicity, easy customization, and broad applications. However, it remains challenging to achieve laser scribing of conductive materials on tissue-like soft elastomers, which can serve as the basis to construct bioelectronics and soft actuators. Here, we report laser scribing of metallic conductive, photoactive transition metal oxide (molybdenum dioxide) on soft elastomers, coated with molybdenum chloride precursors, under ambient conditions. Laser-scribed molybdenum dioxide (LSM) exhibits high electrical conductivity, biocompatibility, chemical stability, and compatibility with magnetic resonance imaging. In addition, LSM can be made on various substrates (polyimide, glass, and hair), showing high generality. Furthermore, LSM-based Janus on-skin electronics are developed to record information from human skin, human breath, and environments. Taking advantage of its outstanding photothermal effect, LSM-based soft actuators are developed to build light-driven reconfigurable three-dimensional architectures, reshapable airflow sensors, and smart robotic worms with bioelectronic sensors.

Biology-guided engineering of bioelectrical interfaces

Bioelectrical interfaces that bridge biotic and abiotic systems have heightened the ability to monitor, understand, and manipulate biological systems and are catalyzing profound progress in neuroscience research, treatments for heart failure, and microbial energy systems. With advances in nanotechnology, bifunctional and high-density devices with tailored structural designs are being developed to enable multiplexed recording or stimulation across multiple spatial and temporal scales with resolution down to millisecond-nanometer interfaces, enabling efficient and effective communication with intracellular electrical activities in a relatively noninvasive and biocompatible manner. This review provides an overview of how biological systems guide the design, engineering, and implementation of bioelectrical interfaces for biomedical applications. We investigate recent advances in bioelectrical interfaces for applications in nervous, cardiac, and microbial systems, and we also discuss the outlook of state-of-the-art biology-guided bioelectrical interfaces with high biocompatibility, extended long-term stability, and integrated system functionality for potential clinical usage.

Graphene nanostructures for input-output bioelectronics

The ability to manipulate the electrophysiology of electrically active cells and tissues has enabled a deeper understanding of healthy and diseased tissue states. This has primarily been achieved via input/output (I/O) bioelectronics that interface engineered materials with biological entities. Stable long-term application of conventional I/O bioelectronics advances as materials and processing techniques develop. Recent advancements have facilitated the development of graphene-based I/O bioelectronics with a wide variety of functional characteristics. Engineering the structural, physical, and chemical properties of graphene nanostructures and integration with modern microelectronics have enabled breakthrough high-density electrophysiological investigations. Here, we review recent advancements in 2D and 3D graphene-based I/O bioelectronics and highlight electrophysiological studies facilitated by these emerging platforms. Challenges and present potential breakthroughs that can be addressed via graphene bioelectronics are discussed. We emphasize the need for a multidisciplinary approach across materials science, micro-fabrication, and bioengineering to develop the next generation of I/O bioelectronics.

Biohybrid approaches to interface with the nervous system: the best of both worlds

Synthetic materials and devices that interact with light, ultrasound, or magnetic fields can be used to modulate neural activity with high spatial and temporal precision; however, these approaches often lack the ability to target genetically defined cell types and signaling pathways. Genetically encoded proteins can be expressed to modify the host tissue and provide cellular and molecular specificity, but compared to synthetic materials, these proteins often interact weakly with externally applied energy sources. Synthetic materials can respond to optical, acoustic, and magnetic stimuli to focus, convert, and amplify forms of energy to ones that are more accessible to engineered cells and proteins. By combining the devices, synthetic materials, and genetically encoded proteins or cells, researchers can gain the ability to interface with the nervous system with improved spatiotemporal, cell-type and molecular precision. Here we review recent advances in these 'biohybrid' approaches that use optical, acoustic, and magnetic energy sources.

Nanoenabled Bioelectrical Modulation

Studying the formation and interactions between biological systems and artificial materials is significant for probing complex biophysical behaviors and addressing challenging biomedical problems. Bioelectrical interfaces, especially nanostructure-based, have improved compatibility with cells and tissues and enabled new approaches to biological modulation. In particular, free-standing and remotely activated bioelectrical devices demonstrate potential for precise biophysical investigation and efficient clinical therapies. Interacting with single cells or organelles requires devices of sufficiently small size for high resolution probing. Nanoscale semiconductors, given their diverse functionalities, are promising device platforms for subcellular modulation. Tissue-level modulation requires additional consideration regarding the device's mechanical compliance for either conformal contact with the tissue surface or seamless three-dimensional (3D) biointegration. Flexible or even open-framework designs are essential in such methods. For chronic organ integration, the highest level of biocompatibility is required for both the materials and device configurations. Additionally, a scalable and high-throughput design is necessary to simultaneously interact with many individual cells in the organ. The physical, chemical, and mechanical stabilities of devices for organ implantation may be improved by ensuring matching of mechanical behavior at biointerfaces, including passivation or resistance designs to mitigate physiological impacts, or incorporating self-healing or adaptative properties. Recent research demonstrates principles of nanostructured material designs that can be used to improve biointerfaces. Nanoenabled extracellular interfaces were frequently used for either electrical or remote optical modulation of cells and tissues. In particular, methods are now available for designing and screening nanostructured silicon, especially chemical vapor deposition (CVD)-derived nanowires and two-dimensional (2D) nanostructured membranes, for biological modulation in vitro and in vivo. For intra- and intercellular biological modulation, semiconductor/cell composites have been created through the internalization of nanowires, and such cellular composites can even integrate with living tissues. This approach was demonstrated for both neuronal and cardiac modulation. At a different front, laser-derived nanocrystalline semiconductors showed electrochemical and photoelectrochemical activities, and they were used to modulate cells and organs. Recently, self-assembly of nanoscale building blocks enabled fabrication of efficient monolithic carbon-based electrodes for in vitro stimulation of cardiomyocytes, ex vivo stimulation of retinas and hearts, and in vivo stimulation of sciatic nerves. Future studies on nanoenabled bioelectrical modulation should focus on improving efficiency and stability of current and emerging technologies. New materials and devices can access new interrogation targets, such as subcellular structures, and possess more adaptable and responsive properties enabling seamless integration. Drawing inspiration from energy science and catalysis can help in such progress and open new avenues for biological modulation. The fundamental study of living bioelectronics could yield new cellular composites for diverse biological signaling control. In situ self-assembled biointerfaces are of special interest in this area as cell type targeting can be achieved.

A Wearable Body Condition Sensor System with Wireless Feedback Alarm Functions

Emerging feedback systems based on tracking body conditions can save human lives. In particular, vulnerable populations such as disabled people, elderly, and infants often require special care. For example, the high global mortality of infants primarily owing to sudden infant death syndrome while sleeping makes request for extraordinary attentions in neonatal intensive care units or daily lives. Here, a versatile laser-induced graphene (LIG)-based integrated flexible sensor system, which can wirelessly monitor the sleeping postures, respiration rate, and diaper moisture with feedback alarm notifications, is reported. A tilt sensor based on confining a liquid metal droplet inside a cavity can track at least 18 slanting orientations. A rapid and scalable laser direct writing method realizes LIG patterning in both the in-plane and out-of-plane configurations as well as the formation of nonstick conductive structures to the liquid metal. By rationally merging the LIG-based tilt, strain, and humidity sensors on a thin flexible film, the multimodal sensor device is applied to a diaper as a real-time feedback tracking system of the sleeping posture, respiration, and wetness toward secure and comfortable lives. User-friendly interfaces, which incorporate alarming functions, provide timely feedback for caregivers tending to vulnerable populations with limited self-care capabilities.

Smart contact lens and transparent heat patch for remote monitoring and therapy of chronic ocular surface inflammation using mobiles

Wearable electronic devices that can monitor physiological signals of the human body to provide biomedical information have been drawing extensive interests for sustainable personal health management. Here, we report a human pilot trial of a soft, smart contact lens and a skin-attachable therapeutic device for wireless monitoring and therapy of chronic ocular surface inflammation (OSI). As a diagnostic device, this smart contact lens enables real-time measurement of the concentration of matrix metalloproteinase-9, a biomarker for OSI, in tears using a graphene field-effect transistor. As a therapeutic device, we also fabricated a stretchable and transparent heat patch attachable on the human eyelid conformably. Both diagnostic and therapeutic devices can be incorporated using a smartphone for their wireless communications, thereby achieving instantaneous diagnosis of OSI and automated hyperthermia treatments. Furthermore, in vivo tests using live animals and human subjects confirm their good biocompatibility and reliability as a noninvasive, mobile health care solution.

Laser-induced graphene for bioelectronics and soft actuators

Laser-assisted process can enable facile, mask-free, large-area, inexpensive, customizable, and miniaturized patterning of laser-induced porous graphene (LIG) on versatile carbonaceous substrates (e.g., polymers, wood, food, textiles) in a programmed manner at ambient conditions. Together with high tailorability of its porosity, morphology, composition, and electrical conductivity, LIG can find wide applications in emerging bioelectronics (e.g., biophysical and biochemical sensing) and soft robots (e.g., soft actuators). In this review paper, we first introduce the methods to make LIG on various carbonaceous substrates and then discuss its electrical, mechanical, and antibacterial properties and biocompatibility that are critical for applications in bioelectronics and soft robots. Next, we overview the recent studies of LIG-based biophysical (e.g., strain, pressure, temperature, hydration, humidity, electrophysiological) sensors and biochemical (e.g., gases, electrolytes, metabolites, pathogens, nucleic acids, immunology) sensors. The applications of LIG in flexible energy generators and photodetectors are also introduced. In addition, LIG-enabled soft actuators that can respond to chemicals, electricity, and light stimulus are overviewed. Finally, we briefly discuss the future challenges and opportunities of LIG fabrications and applications.
