The Influence of Nonlinear Mesoscale Eddies on Near-Surface Oceanic Chlorophyll

Mesoscale eddies exert inverse latitudinal effects on global industrial squid fisheries

Squid species, as a burgeoning global food source, has garnered significant concerns due to expanding fisheries and little regulation. Elucidating the dynamics of squid fisheries and their biophysical coupling mechanisms is crucial for predicting spatiotemporal variations in squid fisheries and their sustainable management. Mesoscale eddies are discrete rotating oceanographic features that dominate local environmental variations and have been shown to modulate top predators. However, given controls of both predators and environmental factors, it remains unknown how eddies impact mid-trophic level species such as squids. Using satellite-based global squid fishery datasets, we showed an inverse latitudinal pattern of eddy-induced squid fisheries, where fishing activities are aggregated in (repelled from) cyclonic (anticyclonic) eddy cores in tropical waters and anticyclonic (cyclonic) eddy cores in temperate waters, and this pattern can be significantly enhanced with increasing eddy amplitude. Regarding solely the satellite-based global squid fisheries, eddy-induced environmental variations may generate a trade-off between food intake and energy expenditure, causing these oceanic squids to prefer cool cyclonic eddies in hot but food-limited waters, and warm anticyclonic eddies in nutritious but heat-limited waters. Given that eddy activity is projected to continuously enhance under global warming, our finding of eddy-driven bottom-up control for squid fisheries highlights an increasingly important hotspot for squid stock predictions and ecosystem-based ocean management in a changing climate.

Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation Decline: Tipping Small Scales under Global Warming

The Atlantic circulation is a key component of the global ocean conveyor that transports heat and nutrients worldwide. Its likely weakening due to global warming has implications for climate and ecology. However, the expected changes remain largely uncertain as low-resolution climate models currently in use do not resolve small scales. Although the large-scale circulation tends to weaken uniformly in both the low-resolution and our high-resolution climate model version, we find that the small-scale circulation in the North Atlantic changes abruptly under global warming and exhibits pronounced spatial heterogeneity. Furthermore, the future Atlantic Ocean circulation in the high-resolution model version expands in conjunction with a sea ice retreat and strengthening toward the Arctic. Finally, the cutting-edge climate model indicates sensitive shifts in the eddies and circulation on regional scales for future warming and thus provides a benchmark for next-generation climate models that can get rid of parametrizations of unresolved scales.

Response of chlorophyll-a to rainfall event in the basin of the South China sea: Statistical analysis

Chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) is an essential ecological indicator, and affected by processes such as typhoons, mesoscale eddies, and Rossby waves. However, the impact of more frequent and widespread precipitation events on Chl-a seems to be overlooked. This study utilized remote sensing data and reanalysis data to investigate the response of Chl-a to 240 precipitation events in the central South China Sea from 2005 to 2019. The results indicate that precipitation events have a significant impact on Chl-a concentration. Following a precipitation event in 2019, the Chl-a concentration in the affected area increased by approximately 0.22 mg m-³ from the 3rd to the 7th day. The reasons for the increase in Chl-a concentration were the vertical mixing induced by wind stirring and the upwelling caused by wind stress curl, which transported nutrients to the euphotic zone, lowering the sea surface temperature and triggering a proliferation of phytoplankton. Additionally, dissolved nutrients in precipitation provided a nutrient source for Chl-a growth. The contributions of nutrient supply, wind speed, and wind stress curl to the increase in Chl-a concentration during precipitation events were 18%, 37%, and 45%, respectively. Precipitation events enhanced marine primary productivity, playing a crucial role in deepening our understanding of ocean-atmosphere interactions and their impact on marine ecosystem.

Viral Dynamics in the Tropical Pacific Ocean: A Comparison between Within and Outside a Warm Eddy

In mesoscale eddies, the chemical properties and biological composition are different from those in the surrounding water due to their unique physical processes. The mechanism of physical-biological coupling in warm-core eddies is unclear, especially because no studies have examined the effects of environmental factors on bacteria and viruses. The purpose of the present study was to examine the influence of an anticyclonic warm eddy on the relationship between bacterial and viral abundances, as well as viral activity (viral production), at different depths. At the core of the warm eddy, the bacterial abundance (0.48 to 2.82 × 105 cells mL-1) fluctuated less than that outside the eddy (1.12 to 7.03 × 105 cells mL-1). In particular, there was a four-fold higher viral-bacterial abundance ratio (VBR) estimated within the eddy, below the layer of the deep chlorophyll maximum, than outside the eddy. An anticyclonic warm eddy with downwelling at its center may contribute to viruses being transmitted directly into the deep ocean through adsorption on particulate organic matter while sinking. Overall, our findings provide valuable insights into the interaction between bacterial and viral abundances and their ecological mechanisms within a warm eddy.

Spatial distribution characteristics of carbazole and polyhalogenated carbazoles in water column and sediments in the open Western Pacific Ocean

Polyhalogenated carbazoles (PHCZs), an emerging persistent halogenated organic pollutant, have been detected in the environment. However, our understanding of PHCZs in the ocean remains limited. In this study, 47 seawater samples (covering 50 - 4000 m) and sediment samples (49 surface and 3 cores) were collected to investigate the occurrence and spatial distribution patterns of carbazole and its halogenated derivants (CZDs) in the Western Pacific Ocean. In seawater, the detection frequencies of CZ (97.87%) and 3-CCZ (57.45%) were relatively high. In addition, the average concentration of ΣPHCZs in the upper water (< 150 m, 0.23 ± 0.21 ng/L) was significantly lower than that in the deep ocean (1000 - 4000 m, 0.65 ± 0.56 ng/L, P < 0.05), which may indicate the vertical transport of PHCZs in the marine environment. The concentration of ΣCZDs in surface sediment ranges from 0.46 to 6.48 ng/g (mean 1.54 ng/g), among which CZ and 36-CCZ were the predominant components. Results from sediment cores demonstrate a noteworthy negative correlation between the concentration of CZDs and depth, indicating the ongoing natural degradation process occurring in sediment cores over a long period. This study offers distinctive insights into the occurrence, composition, and vertical features of CZDs in oceanic environments.

Influence of the community assemblage on sulfur distributions in the South China sea

Marine distribution of dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP) and its cleavage product dimethyl sulfide (DMS) is greatly affected by the community structures of bacteria, phytoplankton, and zooplankton. Spatial distributions of dissolved and particulate DMSP (DMSPd,p), and DMS were measured and their relationships with DMSP lyase activity (DLA), abundance of DMSP-consuming bacteria (DCB), and the community structures of phytoplankton, zooplankton, and bacteria were determined during summer in the South China Sea (SCS). The depth distributions of DMSPd,p exhibited a similar trend with Chl a, reaching their maxima in the mixing layer. The DMS concentration was positively correlated with DCB abundance and DLA, indicating that DCB and DMSP lyase had a significant effect on DMS production. High DMS concentrations in the horizontal distribution coincided with high DCB abundance and DLA and may be due to the rapid growth of phytoplankton resulting from the high dissolved inorganic nitrogen concentration brought by the cold vortices. Moreover, the highest copepod abundance at station G3 coincided with the highest DMS concentrations there among stations B4, F2, and G3. These results suggest that copepod may play an important role in DMS production. The bacterial SAR11 clade was positively correlated with DLA, indicating its significant contribution to DMSP degradation in the SCS. These findings contribute to the understanding of the effect of the community assemblage on DMSP/DMS distributions in the SCS dominated by mesoscale vortices.

Influence of oceanic mesoscale eddies on the deep chlorophyll maxima

The deployment of the biogeochemical Argo network significantly enhances our understanding of the ecological effects of mesoscale eddies at different ocean depths. In this study, satellite data and more than one hundred thousand biogeochemical Argo float profiles were used to analyze the responses of the deep chlorophyll maximum (DCM) to mesoscale eddies. The DCM profiles were categorized into two types: DAM (adaptation maximum) and DBM (biomass maximum), based on their adaptation to light and maximum biomass characteristics. The variabilities in the DCM profiles in terms of latitude, seasonality, and their response to mesoscale eddies were subsequently investigated on a global scale. Our analysis demonstrates that light and nutrient availability explain a significant portion of the variability in the phytoplankton distribution across different regions and seasons. Statistical analysis reveals that cyclonic (anticyclonic) eddies enhance (weaken) the intensity of the DCM. The magnitude of this enhancement or weakening exhibits regional differences. Specifically, high-latitude regions are more influenced by eddies in terms of light-adapted DCM intensity, while in mid-latitude regions, eddies exhibit a stronger effect on the maximum biomass-driven DCM intensity. Moreover, our findings suggest that eddies in the North Atlantic Subtropical Gyre contribute to a downward shift in the euphotic zone depth, leading to an increased DCM depth and strengthened DCM intensity. However, in the equatorial region, eddies impact the DCM depth by influencing the nitracline (a layer in a body of water in which the nitrate concentration changes rapidly with depth). Similar patterns are frequently observed in different regions at the same latitude, providing a foundation for further detailed investigations of the DCM in specific areas.

Eddy impacts on abundance and habitat distribution of a large predatory squid off Peru

The pelagic cephalopod species jumbo flying squid Dosidicus gigas is ecologically and economically important in the Humboldt ecosystem off Peru. This squid species is sensitive to oceanic environmental changes, and regional oceanographical variability is one of the important factors driving its redistribution. Off Peruvian waters, mesoscale eddies are ubiquitous and dominate the biogeochemical processes in this region. This study first explored the role of mesoscale eddies in regulating the environments and their effects on the abundance and habitat distribution of D. gigas off Peru by analyzing squid distribution in eddy-centric coordinates and building a habitat suitability index (HSI) model. Results indicated that the abundance and habitat distribution of D. gigas in mesoscale eddies varied across months, with significant differences observed between anticyclonic eddies (AE) and cyclonic eddies (CE). In AE, a higher abundance and proportion of suitable habitat occurred. While in CE, the abundance was relatively low and the suitable habitat was relatively less, concentrating at the periphery of CE. Based on the HSI model results, sea surface temperature (SST) and 50 m water temperature (T50m) in AE were more favorable for D. gigas, which was 0.3-0.5 °C lower than that in CE, yielding high-quality habitats and higher abundance of D. gigas. Our findings emphasized that mesoscale eddies have a significant impact on water temperature conditions and nutrient concentrations off Peruvian waters.

Doubling of surface oceanic meridional heat transport by non-symmetry of mesoscale eddies

Oceanic transport of heat by ubiquitous mesoscale eddies plays a critical role in regulating climate variability and redistributing excess heat absorbed by ocean under global warming. Eddies have long been simplified as axisymmetric vortices and their influence on heat transport remains unclear. Here, we combine satellite and drifter data and show that oceanic mesoscale eddies are asymmetric and directionally-dependent, and are controlled by their self-sustaining nature and their dynamical environment. Both the direction and amplitude of eddy-induced heat fluxes are significantly influenced by eddy's asymmetry and directional dependence. When the eddy velocity field is decomposed into asymmetric and symmetric components, the eddy kinetic energy exhibits a nearly equal partition between these two components. The total eddy-induced meridional heat flux similarly doubles the heat flux induced by the symmetric components, highlighting the crucial contribution of eddy asymmetry on the magnitude of eddy-induced oceanic heat transport.

A new daily quarter degree sea level anomaly product from CryoSat-2 for ocean science and applications

The European Space Agency launched CryoSat-2 as the first European ice mission in 2010. Its advanced altimeter met primary objectives concerned with sea ice thickness and ice sheets. The value of Cryosat-2 data over global oceans was recognised, and operational products were developed via the CryoSat Ocean Processor (COP). The novel orbit of CryoSat-2 results in a denser coverage of sample points compared to other satellite altimeters. The National Oceanography Centre Sea Level Anomaly (NOCSLA) gridded product is based on interpolating Geophysical Ocean Products (GOP) using weights in space and time. GOP represents the highest quality operational ocean data. NOCSLA is a daily, ¼° sea level anomaly product covering non-coastal oceans between [60°N 60°S] and January 2011 to October 2020. The paper presents the methodology and scientific applications of NOCSLA. Oceanographic features observed are compared against products from other missions, including Rossby waves and El Niño signals. Results show good agreement with other products, confirming the value of Cryosat-2 data for ocean science and applications.

Surface and subsurface oceanographic features drive forage fish distributions and aggregations: Implications for prey availability to top predators in the US Northeast Shelf ecosystem

Forage fishes are a critical food web link in marine ecosystems, aggregating in a hierarchical patch structure over multiple spatial and temporal scales. Surface-level forage fish aggregations (FFAs) represent a concentrated source of prey available to surface- and shallow-foraging marine predators. Existing survey and analysis methods are often imperfect for studying forage fishes at scales appropriate to foraging predators, making it difficult to quantify predator-prey interactions. In many cases, general distributions of forage fish species are known; however, these may not represent surface-level prey availability to predators. Likewise, we lack an understanding of the oceanographic drivers of spatial patterns of prey aggregation and availability or forage fish community patterns. Specifically, we applied Bayesian joint species distribution models to bottom trawl survey data to assess species- and community-level forage fish distribution patterns across the US Northeast Continental Shelf (NES) ecosystem. Aerial digital surveys gathered data on surface FFAs at two project sites within the NES, which we used in a spatially explicit hierarchical Bayesian model to estimate the abundance and size of surface FFAs. We used these models to examine the oceanographic drivers of forage fish distributions and aggregations. Our results suggest that, in the NES, regions of high community species richness are spatially consistent with regions of high surface FFA abundance. Bathymetric depth drove both patterns, while subsurface features, such as mixed layer depth, primarily influenced aggregation behavior and surface features, such as sea surface temperature, sub-mesoscale eddies, and fronts influenced forage fish diversity. In combination, these models help quantify the availability of forage fishes to marine predators and represent a novel application of spatial models to aerial digital survey data.

The Southern Ocean mixed layer and its boundary fluxes: fine-scale observational progress and future research priorities

Interactions between the upper ocean and air-ice-ocean fluxes in the Southern Ocean play a critical role in global climate by impacting the overturning circulation and oceanic heat and carbon uptake. Remote and challenging conditions have led to sparse observational coverage, while ongoing field programmes often fail to collect sufficient information in the right place or at the time-space scales required to constrain the variability occurring in the coupled ocean-atmosphere system. Only within the last 10 years have we been able to directly observe and assess the role of the fine-scale ocean and rapidly evolving atmospheric marine boundary layer on the upper limb of the Southern Ocean's overturning circulation. This review summarizes advances in mechanistic understanding, arising in part from observational programmes using autonomous platforms, of the fine-scale processes (1-100 km, hours-seasons) influencing the Southern Ocean mixed layer and its variability. We also review progress in observing the ocean interior connections and the coupled interactions between the ocean, atmosphere and cryosphere that moderate air-sea fluxes of heat and carbon. Most examples provided are for the ice-free Southern Ocean, while major challenges remain for observing the ice-covered ocean. We attempt to elucidate contemporary research gaps and ongoing/future efforts needed to address them. Coastal phytoplankton blooms expand and intensify in the 21st century

Phytoplankton blooms in coastal oceans can be beneficial to coastal fisheries production and ecosystem function, but can also cause major environmental problems1,2-yet detailed characterizations of bloom incidence and distribution are not available worldwide. Here we map daily marine coastal algal blooms between 2003 and 2020 using global satellite observations at 1-km spatial resolution. We found that algal blooms occurred in 126 out of the 153 coastal countries examined. Globally, the spatial extent (+13.2%) and frequency (+59.2%) of blooms increased significantly (P < 0.05) over the study period, whereas blooms weakened in tropical and subtropical areas of the Northern Hemisphere. We documented the relationship between the bloom trends and ocean circulation, and identified the stimulatory effects of recent increases in sea surface temperature. Our compilation of daily mapped coastal phytoplankton blooms provides the basis for global assessments of bloom risks and benefits, and for the formulation or evaluation of management or policy actions.

Typhoon footprints on ocean surface temperature and chlorophyll-a in the South China Sea

Typhoons pose great threats to coastal regions, leaving distinctive ocean surface changes along the typhoon track before landing. However, a quantitative description of the spatial and temporal patterns of typhoon-induced oceanic responses remains unclear. Sixteen years of composited data of sea surface temperature (SST) and sea surface chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) in the South China Sea demonstrate that typhoon-induced changes initiate immediately before the arrival of the typhoon and continue to increase during its passage. The largest decrease in temperature occurred one day after the typhoon, leading the maximum Chl-a increase by four days. The spatial distribution of changes in SST and Chl-a clearly shows the prominent enhancement to the right of the typhoon's path. Both typhoon features and ocean status determine the corresponding impact on the oceans, as large temperature responses are associated with strong wind, slow translation speed and shallow mixed layer depth (MLD). The Chl-a responses generally followed the same rule, but the maximum Chl-a increase was found with a moderate value of the MLD that was most favorable to induce phytoplankton blooms. Quantifying the typhoon footprints will help to predict how the ocean responds to extreme events in the future climate.

Anticyclonic eddies aggregate pelagic predators in a subtropical gyre

Ocean eddies are coherent, rotating features that can modulate pelagic ecosystems across many trophic levels. These mesoscale features, which are ubiquitous at mid-latitudes¹, may increase productivity of nutrient-poor regions^2,3, accumulate prey⁴ and modulate habitat conditions in the water column⁵. However, in nutrient-poor subtropical gyres-the largest marine biome-the role of eddies in modulating behaviour throughout the pelagic predator community remains unknown despite predictions for these gyres to expand⁶ and pelagic predators to become increasingly important for food security⁷. Using a large-scale fishery dataset in the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre, we show a pervasive pattern of increased pelagic predator catch inside anticyclonic eddies relative to cyclones and non-eddy areas. Our results indicate that increased mesopelagic prey abundance in anticyclone cores^4,8 may be attracting diverse predators, forming ecological hotspots where these predators aggregate and exhibit increased abundance. In this energetically quiescent gyre, we expect that isolated mesoscale features (and the habitat conditions in them) exhibit primacy over peripheral submesoscale dynamics in structuring the foraging opportunities of pelagic predators. Our finding that eddies influence coupling of epi- to mesopelagic communities corroborates the growing evidence that deep scattering layer organisms are vital prey for a suite of commercially important predator species⁹ and, thus, provide valuable ecosystem services.

GeoAI for Large-Scale Image Analysis and Machine Vision: Recent Progress of Artificial Intelligence in Geography

GeoAI, or geospatial artificial intelligence, has become a trending topic and the frontier for spatial analytics in Geography. Although much progress has been made in exploring the integration of AI and Geography, there is yet no clear definition of GeoAI, its scope of research, or a broad discussion of how it enables new ways of problem solving across social and environmental sciences. This paper provides a comprehensive overview of GeoAI research used in large-scale image analysis, and its methodological foundation, most recent progress in geospatial applications, and comparative advantages over traditional methods. We organize this review of GeoAI research according to different kinds of image or structured data, including satellite and drone images, street views, and geo-scientific data, as well as their applications in a variety of image analysis and machine vision tasks. While different applications tend to use diverse types of data and models, we summarized six major strengths of GeoAI research, including (1) enablement of large-scale analytics; (2) automation; (3) high accuracy; (4) sensitivity in detecting subtle changes; (5) tolerance of noise in data; and (6) rapid technological advancement. As GeoAI remains a rapidly evolving field, we also describe current knowledge gaps and discuss future research directions.

QuikSCAT Climatological Data Record: Land Contamination Flagging and Correction

We develop, utilize, and validate techniques to produce a global data set of accurate coastal ocean surface vector winds. The dataset extends as near to the coast as 5 km and includes 10 years of SeaWinds on QuikSCAT ocean scatterometer data obtained from 1999 to 2009. We demonstrate improved retrievals over other large land-locked bodies of water as well, such as the Caspian Sea and the Great lakes. To determine the coastal winds we quantify the extent of land contamination in each scatterometer backscatter measurement and to the extent possible remove that contamination. After the measurements are thus corrected we retrieve winds with the corrected measurements using a previously published algorithm which has been extensively used for JPL scatterometer wind products. The coastal processing vastly increases the number of wind vector cells near coasts. We have ten times the number of wind vectors within 10 km of coast as without coastal processing, and over twice as many at 20 km from coast. These new wind vectors are high-quality, and have zero effect on non-coastal wind vectors. The effect of residual land contamination is quantified by comparing to buoys at varying distance from the coast and comparing coastal wind vector cells to oceanward neighbors. We show that the non-coastal QuikSCAT processing has very few good wind vectors nearer to the coast than about 22.5 km. In comparison to buoys, and oceanward neighbors, we find a small increase in speed errors of these new coastal wind vectors versus the performance of non-coastal QuikSCAT at 22.5 km, indicating the high-quality of these new coastal wind vectors. A quality control scheme is employed that flags regions where the coastal wind retrieval is poor due to the assumptions inherent in the technique being locally invalid. The coastal winds retrieved in this manner have been publicly distributed to the oceanography community and utilized in other published works.

Characteristics of subsurface chlorophyll maxima during the boreal summer in the South China Sea with respect to environmental properties

Characterizing the vertical distribution of chlorophyll a in the water column in each oceanic region is crucial for accurate assessment of depth-integrated phytoplankton biomass. In this study, the characteristics of the subsurface chlorophyll maximum (SCM) in the South China Sea (SCS) during the boreal summer were investigated by using bio-optical and hydrological data collected during four cruises from 2008 to 2015. During the boreal summer, a well-developed SCM layer was found to be a prominent feature in the SCS, with the thickness, depth, and magnitude of the SCM exhibiting large spatial variability. The vertical position of the SCM varied between 11 and 99 m, with an average value of 53 m. Light attenuation played a fundamental role in determining the depth (Z_SCM) and magnitude of the SCM (Chl_max), as reflected by their relationships with the euphotic zone depth (Z_eu). However, because significant positive correlations were found between Z_SCM and the depth of potential density at 23 kg m^-3 (Z_σ=23), physical processes were inferred to be more important in modulating the fluctuation of Z_SCM, especially in open-ocean areas. Anticyclonic eddies, which act to deepen the nutricline by means of isopyncnal displacement, may play a role in aggravating nutrient limitation in the SCM layer, which leads to deepening of Z_SCM, weakening of Chl_max, and a fall in the total integrated chlorophyll a within the euphotic layer (Chl_intZeu). Knowledge of ocean physical conditions and the variability of Z_SCM should be taken into consideration to improve the accuracy of Chl_intZeu estimates based on the surface chlorophyll a concentration (Chl_surf), especially when Chl_surf is very low. Our assessment of SCM parameters provides the basis for a better understanding and quantification of their role in primary production estimation within the SCS.

Physical and Biochemical Responses to Sequential Tropical Cyclones in the Arabian Sea

The upper-ocean physical and biochemical responses to sequential tropical cyclones (TCs) Kyarr and Maha in the Arabian Sea (AS) were investigated using data from satellites and Bio-Argo floats. Corresponding to slow and strong sequential TCs, two cooling processes and two short chlorophyll a (chl-a) blooms occurred on the sea surface, separated by 6–7 days, and three cold eddies appeared near the TC paths, with sea surface temperatures dropping more than 6 °C. Phytoplankton blooms occurred near cold eddies e1, e2, and e3, with chl-a concentrations reaching 12.76, 23.09, and 16.51 mg/m3, respectively. The depth-integrated chl-a analysis confirmed that the first chl-a enhancement was related to the redistribution of chl-a associated with TC-induced Ekman pumping and vertical mixing at the base of the mixed layer post-TC Kyarr. The subsequent, more pronounced chl-a bloom occurred due to the net growth of phytoplankton, as nutrient-rich cold waters were brought into the euphotic layer through Ekman pumping, entrainment, and eddy pumping post-TC Maha. Upwelling (vertical mixing) was the dominant process allowing the resupply of nutrients near (on the right side of) the TC path. The results derived from a biogeochemistry model indicated that the chl-a evolution was consistent with the observations recorded on Bio-Argo floats. This study suggests that in sequential TC-induced phytoplankton blooms, the redistribution of chl-a is a major mechanism for the first bloom, when high chl-a concentrations occur in the subsurface layer, whereas the second bloom is fueled by nutrients supplied from the deep layer.

Dissipation of mesoscale eddies at a western boundary via a direct energy cascade

The fate of mesoscale eddy kinetic energy represents a large source of uncertainty in the global ocean energy budget. Satellite altimetry suggests that mesoscale eddies vanish at ocean western boundaries. However, the fate of the eddies’ kinetic energy remains poorly known. Here we show that the generation of small-scale turbulence as eddy flow impinges on the steep and corrugated slope of an ocean western boundary plays a dominant role in the regional decay of mesoscale eddy kinetic energy. We compare altimetry-based estimates of mesoscale eddy kinetic energy decline with measurements of turbulent dissipation. Mesoscale eddies are found to decay at a rate of 0.016 ± 0.012 GW and 0.023 ± 0.017 GW for anticyclonic and cyclonic eddies, respectively, similar to the observed turbulent dissipation rate of 0.020 ± 0.011 GW. This demonstrates that a major direct transfer of mesoscale eddy kinetic energy to small, dissipative scales can be effectively triggered by the eddies’ interaction with the western boundary topography.

From 1/4° to 1/8°: Influence of Spatial Resolution on Eddy Detection Using Altimeter Data

A substantial portion of ocean eddies, especially small ones, may be missed due to insufficient spatial or temporal sampling by satellite altimetry. In order to illustrate the influence of spatial resolution on eddy detection, this study provides a comparison of eddy identification, tracking, and analysis between two sets of merged altimeter data with spatial resolutions of 1/4° and 1/8°. One main study area (the Mediterranean Sea), and three confirmatory areas (the South-China Sea, the North-West Pacific, and the South-East Pacific) are chosen. The results show that the number and density of eddies captured by the 1/8° data are about twice as much as those captured by the 1/4° data, while the ratios of corresponding eddy parameters, i.e., radius, amplitude, (eddy kinetic energy (EKE)) are about 0.6–0.8 (1.3) for the two datasets (1/8° ÷ 1/4°). Long-term eddy tracking (1993–2018) is conducted in the Mediterranean Sea, indicating that the improvement in spatial resolution will increase the observed values of both the lifetime and the propagation distance of robust eddies. The number of eddies identified using the 1/4° data only accounts for ~30% to 60% of those identified using the 1/8° data. However, for eddies that can be detected using the two datasets, ~5% to 10% present errors (i.e., confusion). In comparison between the four regions, we find that for the enclosed seas with complex conditions, the increase in spatial resolution may lead to more significant improvements in the efficiency and accuracy of eddy detection.

Spatiotemporal BME characterization and mapping of sea surface chlorophyll in Chesapeake Bay (USA) using auxiliary sea surface temperature data

Improving the spatiotemporal coverage of remote sensing (RS) products, such as sea surface chlorophyll concentration (SSCC), can offer a better understanding of the spatiotemporal SSCC distribution for ocean management purposes. In the first part of this work, 834 in-situ SSCC measurements of the SeaBASS-NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) during 2002-2016 served as the empirical dataset. A moving window with ±3 days and ±0.5° centered at each of the in-situ SSCC measurements established a search neighborhood for Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer Level 2 (MODIS L2) SSCC and MODIS L2 sea surface temperature (SST) data, and the matched SSCC and SST data were used for building a linear SSCC-SST relationship. The unmatched SST was introduced to the linear model for generating soft SSCC data with uniform distributions. The inherent spatiotemporal dependency of the SSCC distribution was then represented by the Bayesian maximum entropy (BME) method, which incorporated the soft SSCC data as auxiliary variable for SSCC estimation and mapping purposes. The results showed that a 75.3% accuracy improvement of remote SSCC retrieval in terms of R² can be achieved by BME-based method compared to the original MODIS L2 product. Subsequently, the BME-based method was applied to obtain daily SSCC dataset in Chesapeake Bay (USA) during the period 2010-2019. It was found that the SSCC distribution exhibited a decreasing spatial trend from the upper bay to the outer bay, whereas decreasing and increasing temporal trends were detected during the periods 2011-2014 and 2016-2019, respectively. The generalized Cauchy process was used to quantitatively describe the autocorrelation SSCC function in the Chesapeake Bay. The results showed that the outer bay exhibited the strongest long-range dependence among the four sub-regions, whereas the middle bay exhibited the weakest long-range dependence. Finally, one-point and two-point stochastic site indicators (SSIs) were employed to explore the spatiotemporal SSCC characteristics in Chesapeake Bay. The one-point SSI results showed that nearly 100% of the upper, middle and the lower bay areas experienced a high SSCC level (>5 mg/m³) during the entire study period. The area with SSCC >5 mg/m³ in the outer bay increased a lot during the winter season, but the area with SSCC >10 or 20 mg/m³ decreased significantly in the upper, middle and lower bay. Simultaneously, the SSCC dispersion in these areas was rather small during the winter season. On the other hand, the two-point SSI results showed that although the SSCC levels differ among the four sub-regions, but the SSCC connectivity structures between pairs of points also displayed some similarities in terms of their spatiotemporal dependency. In conclusion, the proposed BME-based method was shown to be a promising remote SSCC mapping technique that exhibited a powerful ability to improve both accuracy and coverage of RS products. The SSIs can be also used to explore the spatiotemporal characteristics of a variety of natural attributes in waters.

Water column structure influences long-distance latitudinal migration patterns and habitat use of bumphead sunfish Mola alexandrini in the Pacific Ocean

Satellite-tracking of adult bumphead sunfish, Mola alexandrini, revealed long-distance latitudinal migration patterns covering thousands of kilometers. Horizontal and vertical movements of four bumphead sunfish off Taiwan were recorded with pop-up satellite archival tags in 2019–2020. Two individuals moved northward and traveled to Okinawa Island and Kyushu, Japan and two moved southwards; crossing the equator, to Papua New Guinea and New Caledonia. During daytime, bumphead sunfish descended below the thermocline and ascended to mixed layer depths (MLD) during nighttime. The N–S migrants, however, demonstrated different habitat utilization patterns. Instead of using prevailing currents, the northward movements of sunfish cohorts exhibited extensive use of mesoscale eddies. Fish in anticyclonic eddies usually occupied deeper habitats whereas those in cyclonic eddies used near-surface habitats. On northward excursions, fish spent most of their time in regions with high dissolved oxygen concentrations. Southward movement patterns were associated with major currents and thermal stratification of the water column. In highly stratified regions, fish stayed below the thermocline and frequently ascended to MLD during daytime either to warm muscles or repay oxygen debts. These results for bumphead sunfish present important insights into different habitat use patterns and the ability to undergo long-distance migrations over varying spatial-temporal scales and features.

Oceanic eddy-induced modifications to air-sea heat and CO2 fluxes in the Brazil-Malvinas Confluence

Sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies caused by a warm core eddy (WCE) in the Southwestern Atlantic Ocean (SWA) rendered a crucial influence on modifying the marine atmospheric boundary layer (MABL). During the first cruise to support the Antarctic Modeling and Observation System (ATMOS) project, a WCE that was shed from the Brazil Current was sampled. Apart from traditional meteorological measurements, we used the Eddy Covariance method to directly measure the ocean–atmosphere sensible heat, latent heat, momentum, and carbon dioxide (CO₂) fluxes. The mechanisms of pressure adjustment and vertical mixing that can make the MABL unstable were both identified. The WCE also acted to increase the surface winds and heat fluxes from the ocean to the atmosphere. Oceanic regions at middle and high latitudes are expected to absorb atmospheric CO₂, and are thereby considered as sinks, due to their cold waters. Instead, the presence of this WCE in midlatitudes, surrounded by predominantly cold waters, caused the ocean to locally act as a CO₂ source. The contribution to the atmosphere was estimated as 0.3 ± 0.04 mmol m⁻² day⁻¹, averaged over the sampling period. The CO₂ transfer velocity coefficient (K) was determined using a quadratic fit and showed an adequate representation of ocean–atmosphere fluxes. The ocean–atmosphere CO₂, momentum, and heat fluxes were each closely correlated with the SST. The increase of SST inside the WCE clearly resulted in larger magnitudes of all of the ocean–atmosphere fluxes studied here. This study adds to our understanding of how oceanic mesoscale structures, such as this WCE, affect the overlying atmosphere.

Variability in the Sea Surface Temperature Gradient and Its Impacts on Chlorophyll-a Concentration in the Kuroshio Extension

Sixteen years of satellite observational data in the Northwestern Pacific Ocean are used to describe the variability in the sea surface temperature (SST) gradient and its impact on chlorophyll-a concentrations (Chl-a). Spatially, a meridional dependence is identified in which the SST gradient increases to the north in association with elevated Chl-a. Temporally, the seasonal variability shows a large SST gradient and high Chl-a in winter and spring, while the SST gradient and Chl-a are much lower in summer. The seasonal variability in Chl-a leads the variability in the SST gradient by one month. A significant correlation between the SST gradient and Chl-a in the anomalous field is obtained only in the western section of the Kuroshio extension (KE) and the highest correlation is identified without any lags. An index for the section is defined as the proportion of the number of times that the SST gradient magnitude is anomalously large in each year, and the index is highly related to the stability of the KE and has a prominent influence on Chl-a in the region. An anomalously large positive (negative) SST gradient magnitude occurs when the KE is unstable (stable) and the corresponding Chl-a is high (low).

Multi-Source Data Analysis of Mesoscale Eddies and Their Effects on Surface Chlorophyll in the Bay of Bengal

Mesoscale eddies are important to ocean circulation due to their roles in the transport of mass, energy, and heat. This study employs a combination of data sources to initiate a statistical analysis of eddy spatiotemporal characteristics in the Bay of Bengal (BOB) to elucidate the sea surface and vertical structures of the eddies and their impacts on sea surface chlorophyll (Chl) distributions. The results suggest that 1237 cyclonic eddies (CEs) and 1121 anticyclonic eddies (AEs) were detected in 26 years. The number of two eddy polarities was almost the same, and most of them spread to the west or southwest direction. The vertical change of temperature (T) and salinity (S) caused by the eddies is studied and the anomalous eddies, i.e., a CE (AE) eddy with warm (cold) water at the center, are mainly distributed on the northeast side of the Island of Sri Lanka. Furthermore, CEs are found to increase Chl concentration in the surrounding sea by approximately 11.15%, while AEs decrease concentrations also by approximately 11.25%. Changes in Chl concentrations occur most rapidly during the mature and intensification eddy phases. Observations also indicate that the strong local current and wind fields are the primary mechanisms in eddy generation.

Deep-learning-based information mining from ocean remote-sensing imagery

With the continuous development of space and sensor technologies during the last 40 years, ocean remote sensing has entered into the big-data era with typical five-V (volume, variety, value, velocity and veracity) characteristics. Ocean remote-sensing data archives reach several tens of petabytes and massive satellite data are acquired worldwide daily. To precisely, efficiently and intelligently mine the useful information submerged in such ocean remote-sensing data sets is a big challenge. Deep learning-a powerful technology recently emerging in the machine-learning field-has demonstrated its more significant superiority over traditional physical- or statistical-based algorithms for image-information extraction in many industrial-field applications and starts to draw interest in ocean remote-sensing applications. In this review paper, we first systematically reviewed two deep-learning frameworks that carry out ocean remote-sensing-image classifications and then presented eight typical applications in ocean internal-wave/eddy/oil-spill/coastal-inundation/sea-ice/green-algae/ship/coral-reef mapping from different types of ocean remote-sensing imagery to show how effective these deep-learning frameworks are. Researchers can also readily modify these existing frameworks for information mining of other kinds of remote-sensing imagery.

A Major Ecosystem Shift in Coastal East African Waters During the 1997/98 Super El Niño as Detected Using Remote Sensing Data

Under the impact of natural and anthropogenic climate variability, upwelling systems are known to change their properties leading to associated regime shifts in marine ecosystems. These often impact commercial fisheries and societies dependent on them. In a region where in situ hydrographic and biological marine data are scarce, this study uses a combination of remote sensing and ocean modelling to show how a stable seasonal upwelling off the Kenyan coast shifted into the territorial waters of neighboring Tanzania under the influence of the unique 1997/98 El Niño and positive Indian Ocean Dipole event. The formation of an anticyclonic gyre adjacent to the Kenyan/Tanzanian coast led to a reorganization of the surface currents and caused the southward migration of the Somali–Zanzibar confluence zone and is attributed to anomalous wind stress curl over the central Indian Ocean. This caused the lowest observed chlorophyll-a over the North Kenya banks (Kenya), while it reached its historical maximum off Dar Es Salaam (Tanzanian waters). We demonstrate that this situation is specific to the 1997/98 El Niño when compared with other the super El-Niño events of 1972,73, 1982–83 and 2015–16. Despite the lack of available fishery data in the region, the local ecosystem changes that the shift of this upwelling may have caused are discussed based on the literature. The likely negative impacts on local fish stocks in Kenya, affecting fishers’ livelihoods and food security, and the temporary increase in pelagic fishery species’ productivity in Tanzania are highlighted. Finally, we discuss how satellite observations may assist fisheries management bodies to anticipate low productivity periods, and mitigate their potentially negative economic impacts.

An Investigation of the Influences of SWOT Sampling and Errors on Ocean Eddy Observation

The mission of Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) is scheduled to be launched in 2022, and global ocean eddies with radius scales of larger than 10 km are expected to be observed from space. However, there are still open questions about the capability of SWOT to detect ocean eddies. Based on ocean model data and SWOT orbit, this study simulates along-track observation of SWOT. Two eddy datasets are derived from simulated observation data via mapping and eddy identification procedures, one of which includes SWOT errors and the other does not. The third eddy dataset is generated from the original model data. Through comparing these three eddy datasets, it is found that 34% (40%) eddies are lost due to insufficient temporal sampling and errors in the Kuroshio Extension (South China Sea) region, and numerous artifact eddies are generated. To further explain the influence of SWOT errors on smaller-scale eddies, two eddies (a cyclonic eddy and an anticyclonic eddy) with the radius of about 10 km are repeatedly observed 100 times using the SWOT-simulator. The cyclonic eddy with larger amplitude has been detected 84 times, while the anticyclonic eddy is visible 76 times. Therefore, the influence of the SWOT sampling and errors on ocean eddy observation is revealed by the results of these observing system simulation experiments (OSSEs).

Space-time chlorophyll-a retrieval in optically complex waters that accounts for remote sensing and modeling uncertainties and improves remote estimation accuracy

Remote sensing reflectance (Rrs) values measured by satellite sensors involve large amounts of uncertainty leading to non-negligible noise in remote Chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) concentration estimation. This work distinguished between two main stages in the case of estimating distributions of Chl-a within the Gulf of St. Lawrence (Canada). At the model building stage, the retrieval algorithm used both in-situ Chl-a measurements and the corresponding Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) L2-level data estimated Rrs at 412, 443, 469, 488, 531, 547, 555, 645, 667, 678 nm at a 1 km spatial resolution during 2004-2013. Through the training and validation of various models and Rrs combinations of the considered eight techniques (including support vector regression, artificial neural networks, gradient boosting machine, random forests, standard CI-OC3M, multiple linear regression, generalized addictive regression, principal component regression), the support vector regression (SVR) technique was shown to have the best performance in Chl-a concentration estimation using Rrs at 412, 443, 488, 531 and 678 nm. The accuracy indicators for both the training (850) and the validation (213) datasets were found to be very good to excellent (e.g., the R² value varied between 0.7058 and 0.9068). At the space-time estimation stage, this work took a step forward by using the Bayesian maximum entropy (BME) theory to further process the SVR estimated Chl-a concentrations by incorporating the inherent spatiotemporal dependency of physical Chl-a distribution. A 56% improvement was achieved in the reduction of the mean uncertainty of the validation data decreased considerably (from 1.2222 to 0.5322 mg/m³). Then, this novel BME/SVR framework was employed to estimate the daily Chl-a concentrations in the Gulf of St. Lawrence during Jan 1-Dec 31 of 2017 (1 km spatial resolution). The results showed that the daily mean Chl-a concentration varied from 1.6630 to 3.3431 mg/m³, and that the daily mean Chl-a uncertainty reduction of the composite BME/SVR vs. the SVR estimation had a maximum reduction value of 1.0082 and an average reduction value of 0.6173 mg/m³. The monthly spatial Chl-a distribution covariances showed that the highest Chl-a concentration variability occurred during November and that the spatiotemporal Chl-a concentration pattern changed a lot during the period August to November. In conclusion, the proposed BME/SVR was shown to be a promising remote Chl-a retrieval approach that exhibited a significant ability in reducing the non-negligible uncertainty and improving the accuracy of remote sensing Chl-a concentration estimates.

Oceanic vortex mergers are not isolated but influenced by the β-effect and surrounding eddies

Oceanic vortices are ubiquitous in the ocean. They dominate the sub-inertial energy spectrum, and their dynamics is key for the evolution of the water column properties. The merger of two like-signed coherent vortices, which ultimately results in the formation of a larger vortex, provides an efficient mechanism for the lateral mixing of water masses in the ocean. Understanding the conditions of such interaction in the ocean is thus essential. Here, we use a merger detection algorithm to draw a global picture of this process in the ocean. We show that vortex mergers are not isolated, contrary to the hypothesis made in most earlier studies. Paradoxically, the merging distance is well reproduced by isolated vortex merger numerical simulations, but it is imperative to consider both the β-effect and the presence of neighbouring eddies to fully understand the physics of oceanic vortex merger.

Thermohaline Structures and Heat/Freshwater Transports of Mesoscale Eddies in the Bay of Bengal Observed by Argo and Satellite Data

Knowledge of mesoscale eddies in the Bay of Bengal (BOB) is key for further understanding the climate variability in this region and beyond, but little is known about the vertical structure of these eddies. In this study, the three−dimensional structure and transport characteristics of mesoscale eddies in the BOB were comprehensively investigated by the combined use of Argo profiles and satellite data. The composite analysis showed that eddy−induced ocean anomalies are mainly confined to the upper 300 m of the water. The spatial structure of eddy−induced thermohaline perturbations is characterized by a dominant dipole structure in the near surface layer, arising from horizontal advection of the background thermohaline gradient by eddy rotation, and a monopole structure in the subsurface layer, caused by eddy−induced vertical displacements of the isopycnal surfaces. In the eddy core, the maximum temperature anomalies induced by a cyclonic eddy (CE) and an anticyclonic eddy (AE) are about −1.2 °C and +1.2 °C, respectively. The anomalies are located at approximately 100 m. The corresponding salinity anomalies are located at approximately 50 m with a value of −0.1 psu (0.1 psu) for CE (AE). The eddy thermohaline structure has a seasonal character. A deeper temperature and salinity core occurs in both CE and AE in spring compared to that in other seasons, which is primarily caused by the relatively deep thermocline and halocline during that season. In addition, unique warming anomalies induced by CE are present in the mixed layer during winter due to the vertical advection of the BL (Barrier Layer) warmer water by eddies. The total meridional heat transport induced by the composite eddy is poleward (equatorward) south (north) to 10°N with a value of 0.01 PW (−0.013 PW), whereas the total meridional freshwater transport is equatorward with a value of 0.046 Sv over a one−year period. The volume of freshwater export out of the bay is approximately 35% of the annual net freshwater input from local precipitation and river discharge.

Offshore transport of particulate organic carbon in the California Current System by mesoscale eddies

The California Current System is characterized by upwelling and rich mesoscale eddy activity. Cyclonic eddies generally pinch off from meanders in the California Current, potentially trapping upwelled water along the coast and transporting it offshore. Here, we use satellite-derived measurements of particulate organic carbon (POC) as a tracer of coastal water to show that cyclones located offshore that were generated near the coast contain higher carbon concentrations in their interior than cyclones of the same amplitude generated offshore. This indicates that eddies are in fact trapping and transporting coastal water offshore, resulting in an offshore POC enrichment of 20.9 ± 11 Gg year⁻¹. This POC enrichment due to the coastally-generated eddies extends for 1000 km from shore. This analysis provides large-scale observational-based evidence that eddies play a quantitatively important role in the offshore transport of coastal water, substantially widening the area influenced by highly productive upwelled waters in the California Current System.

The California Current System is characterized by wind-driven upwelling and by rich mesoscale eddy activity, resulting in a highly productive ecosystem. Here the authors show that offshore cyclonic eddies which were generated near the coast contain higher carbon concentrations in their interior than eddies of the same amplitude generated locally offshore.

Upper Ocean Response to Two Sequential Tropical Cyclones over the Northwestern Pacific Ocean

The upper ocean thermodynamic and biological responses to two sequential tropical cyclones (TCs) over the Northwestern Pacific Ocean were investigated using multi-satellite datasets, in situ observations and numerical model outputs. During Kalmaegi and Fung-Wong, three distinct cold patches were observed at sea surface. The locations of these cold patches are highly correlated with relatively shallower depth of the 26 °C isotherm and mixed layer depth (MLD) and lower upper ocean heat content. The enhancement of surface chlorophyll a (chl-a) concentration was detected in these three regions as well, mainly due to the TC-induced mixing and upwelling as well as the terrestrial runoff. Moreover, the pre-existing ocean cyclonic eddy (CE) has been found to significantly modulate the magnitude of surface cooling and chl-a increase. With the deepening of the MLD on the right side of TCs, the temperature of the mixed layer decreased and the salinity increased. The sequential TCs had superimposed effects on the upper ocean response. The possible causes of sudden track change in sequential TCs scenario were also explored. Both atmospheric and oceanic conditions play noticeable roles in abrupt northward turning of the subsequent TC Fung-Wong.

Coherent Lagrangian swirls among submesoscale motions

The emergence of coherent Lagrangian swirls (CLSs) among submesoscale motions in the ocean is illustrated. This is done by applying recent nonlinear dynamics tools for Lagrangian coherence detection on a surface flow realization produced by a data-assimilative submesoscale-permitting ocean general circulation model simulation of the Gulf of Mexico. Both mesoscale and submesoscale CLSs are extracted. These extractions prove the relevance of coherent Lagrangian eddies detected in satellite-altimetry-based geostrophic flow data for the arguably more realistic ageostrophic multiscale flow.

Mesoscale eddies release pelagic sharks from thermal constraints to foraging in the ocean twilight zone

New dynamic approaches to managing marine fisheries promise more effective management in a changing climate. However, they require detailed knowledge of the links between oceanographic features and marine megafauna. Here, we demonstrate that satellite tracking of animal movements, combined with ocean remote sensing and numerical models, can provide this critical information for the most exploited pelagic shark in the Atlantic Ocean. We find that this predator dives deep in warm, swirling water masses called eddies that have traditionally been considered ocean “deserts.” Sharks use these warm features as a conduit to forage in the ocean twilight zone, a region of the deep ocean that contains the largest fish biomass on Earth, highlighting the importance of these deep ocean prey resources.

Mesoscale eddies are critical components of the ocean’s “internal weather” system. Mixing and stirring by eddies exerts significant control on biogeochemical fluxes in the open ocean, and eddies may trap distinctive plankton communities that remain coherent for months and can be transported hundreds to thousands of kilometers. Debate regarding how and why predators use fronts and eddies, for example as a migratory cue, enhanced forage opportunities, or preferred thermal habitat, has been ongoing since the 1950s. The influence of eddies on the behavior of large pelagic fishes, however, remains largely unexplored. Here, we reconstruct movements of a pelagic predator, the blue shark (Prionace glauca), in the Gulf Stream region using electronic tags, earth-observing satellites, and data-assimilating ocean forecasting models. Based on >2,000 tracking days and nearly 500,000 high-resolution time series measurements collected by 15 instrumented individuals, we show that blue sharks seek out the interiors of anticyclonic eddies where they dive deep while foraging. Our observations counter the existing paradigm that anticyclonic eddies are unproductive ocean “deserts” and suggest anomalously warm temperatures in these features connect surface-oriented predators to the most abundant fish community on the planet in the mesopelagic. These results also shed light on the ecosystem services provided by mesopelagic prey. Careful consideration will be needed before biomass extraction from the ocean twilight zone to avoid interrupting a key link between planktonic production and top predators. Moreover, robust associations between targeted fish species and oceanographic features increase the prospects for effective dynamic ocean management.

The influence of geostrophic strain on oceanic ageostrophic motion and surface chlorophyll

Oceanic submesoscale ageostrophic processes have been progressively recognized as an important upwelling mechanism to close the nutrient budget and sustain the observed primary production of phytoplankton in the euphotic layer. Their relatively small spatio-temporal scales (of 1~10 km and a few days) have hindered a systematic observational quantification of the submesoscale ageostrophic flow variability and its impact on ocean biogeochemistry. By combining surface drifters, satellite altimetry and satellite ocean-color data, we detect that when the strain rate of mesoscale surface geostrophic flow is strong, it favors a higher ageostrophic kinetic energy level and an increase in surface chlorophyll concentration. The strain-induced frontal processes are characterized by a surface chlorophyll increase and secondary ageostrophic upwelling along the light side of the oceanic density front. Further analysis indicates that the balanced ageostrophic motions with longer time scales are more effective in inducing chlorophyll increase than the unbalanced shorter time-scale wave motions.

The ocean’s swirling eddies are known to influence primary productivity, yet understanding of these processes has been hampered by a lack of resolution. Robust learning algorithms for capturing oceanic dynamics and transport of Noctiluca blooms using linear dynamical models

The blooms of Noctiluca in the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea have been intensifying in recent years, posing now a threat to regional fisheries and the long-term health of an ecosystem supporting a coastal population of nearly 120 million people. We present the results of a local-scale data analysis to investigate the onset and patterns of the Noctiluca blooms, which form annually during the winter monsoon in the Gulf of Oman and in the Arabian Sea. Our approach combines methods in physical and biological oceanography with machine learning techniques. In particular, we present a robust algorithm, the variable-length Linear Dynamic Systems (vLDS) model, that extracts the causal factors and latent dynamics at the local-scale along each individual drifter trajectory, and demonstrate its effectiveness by using it to generate predictive plots for all variables and test macroscopic scientific hypotheses. The vLDS model is a new algorithm specifically designed to analyze the irregular dataset from surface velocity drifters, in which the multivariate time series trajectories are having variable or unequal lengths. The test results provide local-scale statistical evidence to support and check the macroscopic physical and biological Oceanography hypotheses on the Noctiluca blooms; it also helps identify complementary local trajectory-scale dynamics that might not be visible or discoverable at the macroscopic scale. The vLDS model also exhibits a generalization capability (as a machine learning methodology) to investigate important causal factors and hidden dynamics associated with ocean biogeochemical processes and phenomena at the population-level and local trajectory-scale.

50 Years of Satellite Remote Sensing of the Ocean

The development of the technologies of remote sensing of the ocean was initiated in the 1970s, while the ideas of observing the ocean from space were conceived in the late 1960s. The first global view from space revealed the expanse and complexity of the state of the ocean that had perplexed and inspired oceanographers ever since. This paper presents a glimpse of the vast progress made from ocean remote sensing in the past 50 years that has a profound impact on the ways we study the ocean in relation to weather and climate. The new view from space in conjunction with the deployment of an unprecedented amount of in situ observations of the ocean has led to a revolution in physical oceanography. The highlights of the achievement include the description and understanding of the global ocean circulation, the air–sea fluxes driving the coupled ocean–atmosphere system that is most prominently illustrated in the tropical oceans. The polar oceans are most sensitive to climate change with significant consequences, but owing to remoteness they were not accessible until the space age. Fundamental discoveries have been made on the evolution of the state of sea ice as well as the circulation of the ice-covered ocean. Many surprises emerged from the extraordinary accuracy and expanse of the space observations. Notable examples include the determination of the global mean sea level rise as well as the role of the deep ocean in tidal mixing and dissipation.

Impact of Cyclonic Ocean Eddies on Upper Ocean Thermodynamic Response to Typhoon Soudelor

By using multiplatform satellite datasets, Argo observations and numerical model data, the upper ocean thermodynamic responses to Super Typhoon Soudelor are investigated with a focus on the impact of an ocean cyclonic eddy (CE). In addition to the significant surface cooling inside the CE region, an abnormally large rising in subsurface temperature is observed. The maximum warming and heat content change (HCC) reach up to 4.37 °C and 1.73 GJ/m2, respectively. Moreover, the HCC is an order of magnitude larger than that calculated from statistical analysis of Argo profile data in the previous study which only considered the effects caused by typhoons. Meanwhile, the subsurface warming outside the CE is merely 1.74 °C with HCC of 0.39 GJ/m2. Previous studies suggested that typhoon-induced vertical mixing is the primary factor causing subsurface warming but these studies ignored an important mechanism related to the horizontal advection caused by the rotation and movement of mesoscale eddies. This study documents that the eddy-induced horizontal advection has a great impact on the upper ocean responses to typhoons. Therefore, the influence of eddies should be considered when studying the responses of upper ocean to typhoons with pre-existing mesoscale eddies.

Generation of large pollution patches via collisions of sticky floating parcels driven by wind and surface currents

We study the evolution of large systems of sticky patches of pollution that float on the sea surface and are moved around by realistic wind and simulated surface currents. The study area is the Gulf of Finland in the eastern Baltic Sea that hosts extremely heavy cargo and tanker traffic. It is assumed that patches merge at collision. Collisions are enhanced by wind impact that depends on the patch size. We implement a space partitioning algorithm for fast simulations of large systems of >8000 patches and perform a series of simulations with different initial size and location of the patches. The resulting empirical distribution of the number of patches of different size is governed universally by a stretched-exponential power law f(x) = A exp (-x^b). This indicates that the evolution of large systems of pollution patches on the sea surface exhibits classic self-organization and scale invariance properties. This may be the key effect explaining how the patchiness of waste in marine environment is formed under the impact of different drivers.

Chlorophyll Rings around Ocean Eddies in the North Pacific

Chlorophyll rings (CRs) are defined as elevated chlorophyll along eddy peripheries and have been observed in anticyclonic oceanic eddies occasionally. This study presents observations of CRs around both anticyclonic and cyclonic eddies from a large observational data set. An innovative algorithm is developed to identify CRs from satellite observations of sea level anomalies and near-surface chlorophyll concentration in the North Pacific Ocean between 2003 and 2010. The results show that only 1% of mesoscale eddies are associated with CRs, which implies the CRs are not ubiquitous. We propose two potential generation mechanisms for CRs: horizontal advection and wind-current interaction. The former dominates the formation of about two-thirds of the CRs. The CRs associated with both cyclones and anticyclones represents an important contribution to better understanding of mesoscale physical/biological coupled phenomena.

Statistical Characteristics of Cyclonic Warm-Core Eddies and Anticyclonic Cold-Core Eddies in the North Pacific Based on Remote Sensing Data

A (an) cyclonic (anticyclonic) eddy is usually associated with a cold (warm) core caused by the eddy-induced divergence (convergence) motion. However, there are also some cyclonic (anticyclonic) eddies with warm (cold) cores in the North Pacific, named cyclonic warm-core eddies (CWEs) and anticyclonic cold-core eddies (ACEs) in this study, respectively. Their spatio-temporal characteristics and regional dependence are analyzed using the multi-satellite merged remote sensing datasets. The CWEs are mainly concentrated in the northwestern and southeastern North Pacific. However, besides these two areas, the ACEs are also concentrated in the northeastern Pacific. The annual mean number decreases year by year for both CWEs and ACEs, and the decreasing rate of the CWEs is about two times as large as that of the ACEs. Moreover, the CWEs and ACEs also exhibit a significant seasonal variation, which are intense in summer and weak in winter. Based on the statistics of dynamic characteristics in seven subregions, the Kuroshio Extension region could be considered as the most active area for the CWEs and ACEs. Two possible mechanisms for CW-ACEs generation are discussed by analyzing two cases.

Impact of mesoscale eddies on chlorophyll variability off the coast of Chile

The mesoscale eddies off the coast of Chile significantly impact the distribution of local chlorophyll and the development of marine ecosystem. Multiple processes, including eddy trapping, pumping, advection, Ekman-pumping, and submesoscale dynamics, exert their impacts simultaneously on transport of water masses at different distances with respect to the eddy center. The cyclonic (anticyclonic) eddies are generally characterized by upwelling (downwelling) within the eddy, which elevates (depresses) chlorophyll inside the eddy. Outside the eddy periphery, multiple processes are involved simultaneously, but their corresponding influences on chlorophyll are not well identified. In this study, the amplitudes of cyclonic and anticyclonic eddies are distinguished as positive and negative values, respectively. A linear regression method is applied to seek the connection between eddy’s amplitude and chlorophyll distribution at different locations w.r.t. the eddy center. The regression slope between eddy amplitude and chlorophyll anomaly is found to be negative in the eddy interior and along the periphery, which gradually changes to positive away from the periphery. The location where the response of chlorophyll to an eddy switches its sign is defined as the transition zone. The location of the transition zone varies with offshore distance and is impacted by topography, such as the presence of islands, which can change the dynamics of eddies. Thus, the distance from eddy center and offshore distance from coast should be taken into consideration when investigating their influences on nutrient transport and chlorophyll distribution.

Mesoscale activity facilitates energy gain in a top predator

How animal movement decisions interact with the distribution of resources to shape individual performance is a key question in ecology. However, links between spatial and behavioural ecology and fitness consequences are poorly understood because the outcomes of individual resource selection decisions, such as energy intake, are rarely measured. In the open ocean, mesoscale features (approx. 10-100 km) such as fronts and eddies can aggregate prey and thereby drive the distribution of foraging vertebrates through bottom-up biophysical coupling. These productive features are known to attract predators, yet their role in facilitating energy transfer to top-level consumers is opaque. We investigated the use of mesoscale features by migrating northern elephant seals and quantified the corresponding energetic gains from the seals' foraging patterns at a daily resolution. Migrating elephant seals modified their diving behaviour and selected for mesoscale features when foraging. Daily energy gain increased significantly with increasing mesoscale activity, indicating that the physical environment can influence predator fitness at fine temporal scales. Results show that areas of high mesoscale activity not only attract top predators as foraging hotspots, but also lead to increased energy transfer across trophic levels. Our study provides evidence that the physical environment is an important factor in controlling energy flow to top predators by setting the stage for variation in resource availability. Such understanding is critical for assessing how changes in the environment and resource distribution will affect individual fitness and food web dynamics.

Mesoscale eddies influence the movements of mature female white sharks in the Gulf Stream and Sargasso Sea

Satellite-tracking of mature white sharks (Carcharodon carcharias) has revealed open-ocean movements spanning months and covering tens of thousands of kilometers. But how are the energetic demands of these active apex predators met as they leave coastal areas with relatively high prey abundance to swim across the open ocean through waters often characterized as biological deserts? Here we investigate mesoscale oceanographic variability encountered by two white sharks as they moved through the Gulf Stream region and Sargasso Sea in the North Atlantic Ocean. In the vicinity of the Gulf Stream, the two mature female white sharks exhibited extensive use of the interiors of clockwise-rotating anticyclonic eddies, characterized by positive (warm) temperature anomalies. One tagged white shark was also equipped with an archival tag that indicated this individual made frequent dives to nearly 1,000 m in anticyclones, where it was presumably foraging on mesopelagic prey. We propose that warm temperature anomalies in anticyclones make prey more accessible and energetically profitable to adult white sharks in the Gulf Stream region by reducing the physiological costs of thermoregulation in cold water. The results presented here provide valuable new insight into open ocean habitat use by mature, female white sharks that may be applicable to other large pelagic predators.

A Satellite-Based Lagrangian View on Phytoplankton Dynamics

The well-lit upper layer of the open ocean is a dynamical environment that hosts approximately half of global primary production. In the remote parts of this environment, distant from the coast and from the seabed, there is no obvious spatially fixed reference frame for describing the dynamics of the microscopic drifting organisms responsible for this immense production of organic matter-the phytoplankton. Thus, a natural perspective for studying phytoplankton dynamics is to follow the trajectories of water parcels in which the organisms are embedded. With the advent of satellite oceanography, this Lagrangian perspective has provided valuable information on different aspects of phytoplankton dynamics, including bloom initiation and termination, spatial distribution patterns, biodiversity, export of carbon to the deep ocean, and, more recently, bottom-up mechanisms that affect the distribution and behavior of higher-trophic-level organisms. Upcoming submesoscale-resolving satellite observations and swarms of autonomous platforms open the way to the integration of vertical dynamics into the Lagrangian view of phytoplankton dynamics.
