Abstract
The sterically demanding N-heterocyclic carbene ITr (N,N'-bis(triphenylmethyl)imidazolylidene) was employed for the preparation of novel trigonal zinc(II) complexes of the type [ZnX2(ITr)] [X = Cl (1), Br (2), and I (3)], for which the low coordination mode was confirmed in both solution and solid state. Because of the atypical coordination geometry, the reactivity of 1-3 was studied in detail using partial or exhaustive halide exchange and halide abstraction reactions to access [ZnLCl(ITr)] [L = carbazolate (4), 3,6-di-tert-butyl-carbazolate (5), phenoxazine (6), and phenothiazine (7)], [Zn(bdt)(ITr)] (bdt = benzene-1,2-dithiolate) (8), and cationic [Zn(μ2-X)(ITr)]2[B(C6F5)4]2 [X = Cl (9), Br (10), and I (11)], all of which were isolated and structurally characterized. Importantly, for all complexes 4-11, the trigonal coordination environment of the ZnII ion is maintained, demonstrating a highly stabilizing effect due to the steric demand of the ITr ligand, which protects the metal center from further ligand association. In addition, complexes 1-3 and 8-11 show long-lived luminescence from triplet excited states in the solid state at room temperature, according to our photophysical studies. Our quantum chemical density functional theory/multireference configuration interaction (DFT/MRCI) calculations reveal that the phosphorescence of 8 originates from a locally excited triplet state on the bdt ligand. They further suggest that the phenyl substituents of ITr are photochemically not innocent but can coordinate to the electron-deficient metal center of this trigonal complex in the excited state.

Abstract
We investigated the dehydrogenative annulation of silylated 1H-indole derivatives with alkynes to synthesize a silole-fused indole. The addition of the in situ generated silylium ion to alkynes was followed by the sila-Friedel-Crafts reaction via silyl migration, realizing regioselective dehydrogenative annulation controlled by the steric bulkiness of a base. The optical properties of the obtained siloloindoles indicated fluorescence of which the intensity depends on the location of the fused silole.

Abstract
Preparation and characterization of the dimeric Lewis superacid [Al(OTeF5 )3 ]2 and various solvent adducts is presented. The latter range from thermally stable adducts to highly reactive, weakly bound species. DFT calculations on the ligand affinity of these Lewis acids were performed in order to rank their remaining Lewis acidity. An experimental proof of the Lewis acidity is provided by the reaction of solvent-adducts of Al(OTeF5 )3 with [PPh4 ][SbF6 ] and OPEt3 , respectively. Furthermore, their reactivity towards chloride and pentafluoroorthotellurate salts as well as (CH3 )3 SiCl and (CH3 )3 SiF is shown. This includes the formation of the dianion [Al(OTeF5 )5 ]2- .

Abstract
Understanding the interplay of structural and electronic parameters in the stabilization of Lewis acidic silicon centers is crucial for stereochemical questions and applications in bond activation and catalytic transformations. Phosphine chalcogenide functionalized (Ch = O, S, and Se) hydrosilanes having tert-butyl and 2,4,6-trimethoxyphenyl (TMP) substituents on the silicon atom were synthesized, and the ring-closing reactions to afford the heterocyclic four-membered CPChSi cations were investigated. Synthetic access was only achieved for the sulfur- and selenium-based cations. A thorough study by means of single-crystal X-ray structure determination, NMR spectroscopic data, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations provided insight into important electronic and structural parameters affecting the stability of the intramolecularly stabilized cations. Detailed structural considerations were made on the contributions to the ring strain (angular strain and steric repulsion). Thermochemical investigations showed that the substituents on the silicon and phosphorus atoms play an important role for the stability of the cationic heterocycles. In the absence of large steric repulsions through bulky substituents (methyl groups on silicon and tert-butyl groups on phosphorus), an intrinsic stability sequence of the intramolecular Ch-Si coordination depending on the chalcogen atom in the direction Se ≤ S < O can be observed. However, the order is reversed (O < S < Se) in the case of strong repulsions between sterically demanding substituents (tert-butyl groups on both silicon and phosphorus atoms). Natural bond orbital (NBO) analysis supported the explanations for the observed deshielding trends in 31P NMR spectroscopy and revealed that the O-Si bond is more ionic in nature compared to the S-Si and Se-Si bonds, with the latter exhibiting higher covalent character due to a more efficient charge transfer through a σ-type nCh → pSi interaction.

Abstract
A strong Lewis acid silylium ion was utilized for dehydrogenative annulation between dialkyl(1-naphthyl)silanes 1 and aldehydes 2. Silane 1a was reacted with [Ph3C][B(C6F5)4] in the presence of 2,6-di-tert-butyl-4-methylpyridine and aldehydes 2 to afford the annulation product, 1-silabenzo[d,e]isochromanes 3, in moderate isolated yields. The annulation occurred only at the 8-position on the 1-naphthyl group. The silylium ion-promoted hydrosilylation proceeded competitively to afford silyl ethers 4 via the same intermediates, silylcarboxonium ions, in the dehydrogenative annulation. The ratio of 3 and 4 was affected by solvents and the electronic properties of aromatic aldehydes; for example, the use of less polar solvents and that of benzaldehydes with an electron-withdrawing group at the para-position predominantly yielded 3. This annulation reaction was applicable to aldehydes bearing a heteroaromatic group and aliphatic alkyl groups. Judging from these results, both the formation of silylcarboxonium ions by in situ-generated silylium ions and the electrophilic aromatic substitution are important for this annulation reaction.

Abstract
Already 1 mol% of subvalent [Ga(PhF)2]+[pf]- ([pf]- = [Al(ORF)4]-, RF = C(CF3)3) initiates the hydrosilylation of olefinic double bonds under mild conditions. Reactions with HSiMe3 and HSiEt3 as substrates efficiently yield anti-Markovnikov and anti-addition products, while bulkier substrates such as HSiiPr3 are less reactive. Investigating the underlying mechanism by gas chromatography and STEM analysis, we unexpectedly found that H2 and metallic Ga0 formed. Without the addition of olefins, the formation of R3Si-F-Al(ORF)3 (R = alkyl), a typical degradation product of the [pf]- anion in the presence of a small silylium ion, was observed. Electrochemical analysis revealed a surprisingly high oxidation potential of univalent [Ga(PhF)2]+[pf]- in weakly coordinating, but polar ortho-difluorobenzene of E 1/2(Ga+/Ga0; oDFB) = +0.26-0.37 V vs. Fc+/Fc (depending on the scan rate). Apparently, subvalent Ga+, mainly known as a reductant, initially oxidizes the silane and generates a highly electrophilic, silane-supported, silylium ion representing the actual catalyst. Consequently, the [Ga(PhF)2]+[pf]-/HSiEt3 system also hydrodefluorinates C(sp3)-F bonds in 1-fluoroadamantane, 1-fluorobutane and PhCF3 at room temperature. In addition, both catalytic reactions may be initiated using only 0.2 mol% of [Ph3C]+[pf]- as a silylium ion-generating initiator. These results indicate that silylium ion catalysis is possible with the straightforward accessible weakly coordinating [pf]- anion. Apparently, the kinetics of hydrosilylation and hydrodefluorination are faster than that of anion degradation under ambient conditions. These findings open up new windows for main group catalysis.

Abstract
Two aryl amino borinium cations derived from Cl(Mes)B-NR2 (NR2 = TMP, HMDS) faced divergent outcomes. As the HMDS-substituted one underwent methyl migration from silicon to boron transforming the putative borinium ion to a silylium ion, [Mes-B-TMP]+ can initiate cyanosilylation and catalyse hydrosilylation of ketones and aldehydes.

Abstract
The development of novel Lewis acids derived from bipyridinium and phenanthrolinium dications is reported. Calculations of Hydride Ion Affinity (HIA) values indicate high carbon-based Lewis acidity at the ortho and para positions. This arises in part from extensive LUMO delocalization across the aromatic backbones. Species [C10 H6 R2 N2 CH2 CH2 ]2+ (R=H [1 a]2+ , Me [1 f]2+ , tBu [1 g]2+ ), and [C12 H4 R4 N2 CH2 CH2 ]2+ (R=H [2 a]2+ , Me [2 b]2+ ) were prepared and evaluated for use in the initiation of hydrodefluorination (HDF) catalysis. Compound [2 a]2+ proved highly effective towards generating catalytically active silylium cations via Lewis acid-mediated hydride abstraction from silane. This enabled the HDF of a range of aryl- and alkyl- substituted sp3 (C-F) bonds under mild conditions. The protocol was also adapted to effect the deuterodefluorination of cis-2,4,6-(CF3 )3 C6 H9 . The dications are shown to act as hydride acceptors with the isolation of neutral species C16 H14 N2 (3 a) and C16 H10 Me4 N2 (3 b) and monocationic species [C14 H13 N2 ]+ ([4 a]+ ) and [C18 H21 N2 ]+ ([4 b]+ ). Experimental and computational data provide further support that the dications are initiators in the generation of silylium cations.

Abstract
The history of silyl cations has all the makings of a drama but with a happy ending. Being considered reactive intermediates impossible to isolate in the condensed phase for decades, their actual characterization in solution and later in solid state did only fuel the discussion about their existence and initially created a lot of controversy. This perception has completely changed today, and silyl cations and their donor-stabilized congeners are now widely accepted compounds with promising use in synthetic chemistry. This review provides a comprehensive summary of the fundamental facts and principles of the chemistry of silyl cations, including reliable ways of their preparation as well as their physical and chemical properties. The striking features of silyl cations are their enormous electrophilicity and as such reactivity as super Lewis acids as well as fluorophilicity. Known applications rely on silyl cations as reactants, stoichiometric reagents, and promoters where the reaction success is based on their steady regeneration over the course of the reaction. Silyl cations can even be discrete catalysts, thereby opening the next chapter of their way into the toolbox of synthetic methodology.

Abstract
Phenylacetylene adds [Ar*GeH2 -SnAr'], [Ar*GeH2 -PbAr'] and [Ar'SnH2 -PbAr*] at rt in a regioselective and stereoselective reaction. The highest reactivity was found for the stannylene, which reacts immediately upon addition of one equivalent of alkyne. However, the plumbylenes exhibit addition to the alkyne only in reaction with an excess of phenylacetylene. The product of the germylplumbylene addition reacts with a second equivalent of alkyne and the product of a CH-activation, a dimeric lead acetylide, were isolated. In the case of the stannylplumbylene the trans-addition product was characterized as the kinetically controlled product which isomerizes at rt to yield the cis-addition product, which is stabilized by an intramolecular Sn-H-Pb interaction. NMR chemical shifts of the olefins were investigated using two- and four-component relativistic DFT calculations, as spin-orbit effects can be large. Hydride abstraction was carried out by treating [Ar'SnPhC=CHGeH2 Ar*] with the trityl salt [Ph3 C][Al(OC{CF3 })4 ] to yield a four membered ring cation.

Abstract
Phosphonium ions are widely used in preparative organic synthesis and catalysis. The provision of new types of cations that contain both functional and chiral information is a major synthetic challenge and can open up new horizons in asymmetric cation-directed and Lewis acid catalysis. We discovered an efficient methodology towards new Si-chiral four-membered CPSSi* heterocyclic cations. Three synthetic approaches are presented. The stereochemical sequence of anchimerically assisted cation formation with B(C6 F5 )3 and subsequent hydride addition was fully elucidated and proceeds with excellent preservation of the chiral information at the stereogenic silicon atom. Also the mechanism of dihydrogen release from a protonated hydrosilane was studied in detail by the help of Si-centered chirality as stereochemical probe. Chemoselectivity switch (dihydrogen release vs. protodesilylation) can easily be achieved through slight modifications of the solvent. A matched/mismatched case was identified and the intermolecularity of this reaction supported by spectroscopic, kinetic, deuterium-labeling experiments, and quantum chemical calculations.

Abstract
Mono-coordinated silicon(II) cations are predicted to be reactive ambiphiles, combining the typically high Lewis acidity of silicon cations with nucleophilicity due to the presence of an electron pair at the same atomic centre. Here, a carbazole-derived scaffold was used to isolate salts with a mono-coordinated silicon(II) cation, [RSi]+ (R=bulky carbazolyl substituent), by halide abstraction from a base-free halosilylene, RSiI, with Ag[Al(Ot BuF )4 ]. Despite the bulk of the carbazolyl moiety, the silylenylium cation [RSi]+ retains high reactivity. It was shown to react with an amine to form three bonds at the silicon atom in one reaction which conforms with the notion of a "supersilylene". The resulting silylium cation [RSi(H)NR'2 ]+ (in the formal oxidation state SiIV ) obtained by oxidative addition of an NH bond at [RSi]+ is even more acidic than the silylenylium cation (SiII ) due to the absence of a lone pair of electrons the silicon atom.

Silylium ion mediated 2+2 cycloaddition leads to 4+2 Diels-Alder reaction products. Commun Chem 2020; 3:126. Abstract
The mechanism of silver(I) and copper(I) catalyzed cycloaddition between 1,2-diazines and siloxy alkynes remains controversial. Here we explore the mechanism of this reaction with density functional theory. Our calculations show that the reaction takes place through a metal (Ag+, Cu+) catalyzed [2+2] cycloaddition pathway and the migration of a silylium ion [triisopropylsilyl ion (TIPS+)] further controls the reconstruction of four-member ring to give the final product. The lower barrier of this silylium ion mediated [2+2] cycloaddition mechanism (SMC) indicates that well-controlled [2+2] cycloaddition can obtain some poorly-accessible IEDDA (inverse-electron demand Diels-Alder reaction) products. Strong interaction of d10 metals (Ag+, Cu+) and alkenes activates the high acidity silylium ion (TIPS+) in situ. This п-acid (Ag+, Cu+) and hard acid (TIPS+) exchange scheme will be instructive in silylium ion chemistry. Our calculations not only provide a scheme to design IEDDA catalysts but also imply a concise way to synthesise 1,2-dinitrogen substituted cyclooctatetraenes (1,2-NCOTs).

Abstract
The aluminum(I) compound NacNacAl (NacNac=[ArNC(Me)CHC(Me)NAr]- , Ar=2,6-iPr2 C6 H3 , 1) shows diverse and substrate-controlled reactivity in reactions with N-heterocycles. 4-Dimethylaminopyridine (DMAP), a basic substrate in which the 4-position is blocked, induces rearrangement of NacNacAl by shifting a hydrogen atom from the methyl group of the NacNac backbone to the aluminum center. In contrast, C-H activation of the methyl group of 4-picoline takes place to produce a species with a reactive terminal methylene. Reaction of 1 with 3,5-lutidine results in the first example of an uncatalyzed, room-temperature cleavage of an sp2 C-H bond (in the 4-position) by an AlI species. Another reactivity mode was observed for quinoline, which undergoes 2,2'-coupling. Finally, the reaction of 1 with phthalazine produces the product of N-N bond cleavage.

Abstract
Hydrogen-substituted silylium ions are long-sought reactive species. We report a protolysis strategy that chemoselectively cleaves either an Si-C(sp2) or an Si-H bond using a carborane acid to access the full series of [CHB11H5Br6]--stabilized R2SiH+, RSiH2 +, and SiH3 + cations, where bulky tert-butyl groups at the silicon atom (R = tBu) were crucial to avoid substituent redistribution. The crystallographically characterized molecular structures of [CHB11H5Br6]--stabilized tBu2HSi+ and tBuH2Si+ feature pyramidalization at the silicon atom, in accordance with that of tBu3Si+[CHB11H5Br6]- Conversely, the silicon atom in the H3Si+ cation adopts a trigonal-planar structure and is stabilized by two counteranions. This solid-state structure resembles that of the corresponding Brønsted acid.

Abstract
A metal-free, intermolecular syn-addition of hexamethyldisilane across simple alkenes is reported. The catalytic cycle is initiated and propagated by the transfer of a methyl group from the disilane to a silylium-ion-like intermediate, corresponding to the (re)generation of the silylium-ion catalyst. The key feature of the reaction sequence is the cleavage of the Si-Si bond in a 1,3-silyl shift from silicon to carbon. A central intermediate of the catalysis was structurally characterized by X-ray diffraction, and the computed reaction mechanism is fully consistent with the experimental findings.

Abstract
Classically closo-carborane anions, particularly [HCB11H11]- and [HCB9H9]-, and their derivatives have primarily been used as weakly coordinating anions to isolate reactive intermediates, platforms for stoichiometric and catalytic functionalization, counteranions for simple Lewis acid catalysis, and components of materials like liquid crystals. The aim of this article is to educate the reader on the contemporary nonclassical applications of these anions. Specifically, this review will cover new directions in main group catalysis utilized to achieve some of the most challenging catalytic reactions such as C-F, C-H, and C-C functionalizations that are difficult or impossible to realize with transition metals. In addition, the review will cover the utilization of the clusters as dianionic C σ-bound ligands for coordination chemistry, ligand substituents for coordination chemistry and advanced catalyst design, and covalently bound spectator substituents to stabilize radicals. Furthermore, their applications as solution-based and solid-state electrolytes for Li, Na, and Mg batteries will be discussed.

Abstract
The formation of simple non-classical silylium ions from [Me3Si]+ sources and alkenes or alkynes was investigated, but mainly oligomerization was observed. Yet, the reaction with MeC
Created by potrace 1.16, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2019
]]>
CMe led to a room temperature stable cyclobutenyl cation. DFT calculations suggest that a non-classical silylium ion intermediate was formed on the way to this product.
Instead of yielding the desired non-classical silylium ions, the reactions of different alkenes/alkynes with several [Me3Si]+ sources mostly led to oligomerization, or – in the presence of Me3SiH – hydrosilylation of the alkenes/alkynes. Yet, from the reaction of 2-butyne with ion-like Me3Si–F–Al(ORF)3 (RF = C(CF3)3) the salt of the silylated tetramethyl cyclobutenyl cation [Me4C4–SiMe3]+[al–f–al]–1 ([al–f–al]– = [(RFO)3Al–F–Al(ORF)3]–) was obtained in good yield (NMR, scXRD, Raman, and IR). All the experimental and calculated evidence suggest a mechanism in which 1 was formed via a non-classical silylium ion as an intermediate. The removal of the [Me3Si]+ moiety from the cation in 1 was investigated as a means to provide free tetramethyl cyclobutadiene (CBD). However, the addition of [NMe4]F, in order to release Me3SiF and form CBD, led to the unexpected deprotonation of the cation. The addition of 4-dimethylaminopyridine to remove the [Me3Si]+ cation as a Lewis acid/base adduct, led to an adduct with the four-membered ring in the direct neighborhood of the Me3Si group. By the addition of Et2O to a solution of 1, the [F–Al(ORF)3]– anion (and Et2O–Al(ORF)3) was generated from the [al–f–al]– counterion. Subsequently, the [F–Al(ORF)3]– anion abstracted the [Me3Si]+ moiety from [Me4C4–SiMe3]+, probably releasing CBD. However, due to the immediate reaction of CBD with [Me4C4–SiMe3]+ and subsequent oligomerization, it was not possible to use CBD in follow-up chemistry.

Abstract
The development of new or more sustainable, active, efficient, controlled, and selective polymerization reactions or processes continues to be crucial for the synthesis of important polymers or materials with specific structures or functions. In this context, the newly emerged polymerization technique enabled by main-group Lewis pairs (LPs), termed as Lewis pair polymerization (LPP), exploits the synergy and cooperativity between the Lewis acid (LA) and Lewis base (LB) sites of LPs, which can be employed as frustrated Lewis pairs (FLPs), interacting LPs (ILPs), or classical Lewis adducts (CLAs), to effect cooperative monomer activation as well as chain initiation, propagation, termination, and transfer events. Through balancing the Lewis acidity, Lewis basicity, and steric effects of LPs, LPP has shown several unique advantages or intriguing opportunities compared to other polymerization techniques and demonstrated its broad polar monomer scope, high activity, control or livingness, and complete chemo- or regioselectivity, as well as its unique application in materials chemistry. These advances made in LPP are comprehensively reviewed, with the scope of monomers focusing on heteroatom-containing polar monomers, while the polymerizations mediated by main-group LAs and LBs separately that are most relevant to the LPP are also highlighted or updated. Examples of applying the principles of the LPP and LP chemistry as a new platform for advancing materials chemistry are highlighted, and currently unmet challenges in the field of the LPP, and thus the suggested corresponding future research directions, are also presented.
