Heterogeneous core-shell Co2(PS3)@Co2P nanowires with accelerated surface reconstruction for efficient electrocatalytic seawater oxidation

The design of pre-catalysts and the rational manipulation of corresponding electrochemical reconstruction are vitally important to construct the highly durable and active catalysts for seawater oxidation, but rather challenging. Herein, a novel core-shell catalyst of Co2(PS3)@Co2P (labeled as CoPS) by epitaxial growth of amorphous cobalt phosphide (Co2P) on crystalline cobalt phosphorous trichalcogenide (Co2(PS3)) is firstly designed as a pre-catalyst for alkaline seawater oxidation. Various characterization techniques are employed to demonstrate that the unique amorphous-crystalline nanowire structure (CoPS) achieves the rapid surface reconstruction into active CoOOH and diversiform oxyanions species (labeled as CoPS-R). Theoretical simulations uncover that the in situ derived oxyanions (PO42-, SO32- and SO42-) on the surface of CoOOH can tune the electron distribution of Co site, thereby optimizing the chemisorption of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) intermediates on CoOOH and reducing the energy barrier of determining step. Consequently, in an alkaline natural seawater solution, the reconstructed CoPS-R catalyst exhibits small overpotentials of 357 and 402 mV for OER at 200 and 500 mA cm-2, respectively, together with an impressive durability over 500 h at a large current density of 500 mA cm-2 benefiting from the strong repulsive effect of the derived PO42-, SO32- and SO42- oxyanions. This work offers a new insight for comprehending the relationship of structure-composition-activity and develops a new approach toward the construction of efficient and robust OER catalysts for seawater electrolysis.

Covalent Organic Framework Interlayer Spacings as Perfectly Selective Artificial Proton Channels

Biological proton channels have perfect selectivity in aqueous environment against almost all ions and molecules, a property that differs itself from other biological channels and a feature that remains challenging to realize for bulk artificial materials. The biological perfect selectivity originates from the fact that the channel has almost no free space for ion or water transport but generates a hydrogen bonded wire in the presence of protons to allow the proton hopping. Inspired by this, we used the interlayer spacings of covalent organic framework materials consisting of hydrophilic functional groups as perfectly selective artificial proton channels. The interlayer spacings are so narrow that no atoms or molecules can diffuse through. However, protons exhibit a diffusivity in the same order of magnitude as that in bulk water. Density functional theory calculations show that water molecules and the COF material form hydrogen bonded wires, allowing the proton hopping. We further demonstrate that the proton transport rate can be tuned by adjusting the acidity of the functional groups.

Observing Proton-Electron Mixed Conductivity in Graphdiyne

Mixed conducting materials with both ionic and electronic conductivities have gained prominence in emerging applications. However, exploring material with on-demand ionic and electronic conductivities remains challenging, primarily due to the lack of correlating macroscopic conductivity with atom-scale structure. Here, the correlation of proton-electron conductivity and atom-scale structure in graphdiyne is explored. Precisely adjusting the conjugated diynes and oxygenic functional groups in graphdiyne yields a tunable proton-electron conductivity on the order of 103. In addition, a wet-chemistry lithography technique for uniform preparation of graphdiyne on flexible substrates is provided. Utilizing the proton-electron conductivity and mechanical tolerance of graphdiyne, bimodal flexible devices serving as capacitive switches and resistive sensors are created. As a proof-of-concept, a breath-machine interface for sentence-based communication and self-nursing tasks with an accuracy of 98% is designed. This work represents an important step toward understanding the atom-scale structure-conductivity relationship and extending the applications of mixed conducting materials to assistive technology.

Polyphenol-mediated defect patching of graphene oxide membranes for sulfonamide contaminants removal and fouling control

Graphene oxide (GO)-based laminar membranes are promising candidates for next-generation nanofiltration membranes because of their theoretically frictionless nanochannels. However, nonuniform stacking during the filtration process and the inherent swelling of GO nanosheets generate horizontal and vertical defects, leading to a low selectivity and susceptibility to pore blockage. Herein, both types of defects are simultaneously patching by utilizing tannic acid and FeⅢ. Tannic acid first partially reduced the upper GO framework, and then coordinated with FeⅢ to form a metal-polyphenol network covering horizontal defects. Due to the enhanced steric hindrance, the resulting membrane exhibited a two-fold increase in sulfonamide contaminants exclusion compared to the pristine GO membrane. A non-significant reduction in permeance was observed. In terms of fouling control, shielding defects significantly alleviated the irreversible pore blockage of the membrane. Additionally, the hydrophilic metal-polyphenol network weakened the adhesion force between the membrane and foulants, thereby improving the reversibility of fouling in the cleaning stage. This work opens up a new way to develop GO-based membranes with enhanced separation performance and antifouling ability.

Status and Prospect of Two-Dimensional Materials in Electrolytes for All-Solid-State Lithium Batteries

Replacing liquid electrolytes and separators in conventional lithium-ion batteries with solid-state electrolytes (SSEs) is an important strategy to ensure both high energy density and high safety. Searching for fast ionic conductors with high electrochemical and chemical stability has been the core of SSE research and applications over the past decades. Based on the atomic-level thickness and infinitely expandable planar structure, numerous two-dimensional materials (2DMs) have been exploited and applied to address the most critical issues of low ionic conductivity of SSEs and lithium dendrite growth in all-solid-state lithium batteries. This review introduces the research process of 2DMs in SSEs, then summarizes the mechanisms and strategies of inert and active 2DMs toward Li+ transport to improve the ionic conductivity and enhance the electrode/SSE interfacial compatibility. More importantly, the main challenges and future directions for the application of 2DMs in SSEs are considered, including the importance of exploring the relationship between the anisotropic structure of 2DMs and Li+ diffusion behavior, the exploitation of more 2DMs, and the significance of in situ characterizations in elucidating the mechanisms of Li+ transport and interfacial reactions. This review aims to provide a comprehensive understanding to facilitate the application of 2DMs in SSEs.

Nanodiamonds: A Cutting-Edge Approach to Enhancing Biomedical Therapies and Diagnostics in Biosensing

Nanodiamonds (NDs) have garnered attention in the field of nanomedicine due to their unique properties. This review offers a comprehensive overview of NDs synthesis methods, properties, and their uses in biomedical applications. Functionalization of NDs facilitates their utilization in biosensors for sensitive biomolecule detection, aiding in precise diagnostics and rapid detection of infectious diseases. This review underscores the multifaceted role of NDs in advancing biomedical applications. By synthesizing NDs through various methods and modifying their surfaces, researchers can tailor their properties for specific biomedical needs. The ability of NDs to serve as efficient drug delivery vehicles holds promise for targeted therapy, while their applications in hyperthermic therapy and vaccine enhancement offer innovative approaches to cancer treatment and immunization. Furthermore, the integration of NDs into biosensors enhances diagnostic capabilities, enabling rapid and sensitive detection of biomolecules and infectious diseases. Overall, the diverse functionalities of NDs underscore their potential as valuable tools in nanomedicine, paving the way for advancements in healthcare and biotechnology.

Ion Transport Behavior in van der Waals Gaps of 2D Materials

2D materials, with advantages of atomic thickness and novel physical/chemical characteristics, have emerged as the vital building blocks for advanced lamellar membranes which possess promising potential in energy storage, ion separation, and catalysis. When 2D materials are stacked together, the van der Waals (vdW) force generated between adjacent layered nanosheets induces the construction of an ordered lamellar membrane. By regulating the interlayer spacing down to the nanometer or even sub-nanometer scale, rapid and selective ion transport can be achieved through such vdW gaps. The further improvement and application of qualified 2D materials-based lamellar membranes (2DLMs) can be fulfilled by the rational design of nanochannels and the intelligent micro-environment regulation under different stimuli. Focusing on the newly emerging advances of 2DLMs, in this review, the common top-down and bottom-up synthesis approaches of 2D nanosheets and the design strategy of functional 2DLMs are briefly introduced. Two essential ion transport mechanisms within vdW gaps are also involved. Subsequently, the responsive 2DLMs based on different types of external stimuli and their unique applications in nanofluid transport, membrane-based filters, and energy storage are presented. Based on the above analysis, the existing challenges and future developing prospects of 2DLMs are further proposed.

Ultrahigh Lithium Selective Transport in Two-Dimensional Confined Ice

Inspired by selective ion transport in biological membrane proteins, researchers developed artificial ion channels that sieve monovalent cations, catering to the increasing lithium demand. In this work, we engineered an ion transport channel based on the confined ice within two-dimensional (2D) capillaries and found that the permselectivity of monovalent cations depends on the anisotropy of the confined ice. Particularly, the 2D confined ice showed an anomalous lithium selective transport along the (002) direction in the vermiculite capillary, with the Li+/Na+ and Li+/K+ permselectivity reaching up to 556 ± 86 and 901 ± 172, respectively, superior to most ion-selective channels. However, the 2D confined ice along the (100) direction showed less Li+ permselectivity. Additionally, the anisotropy of 2D confined ice can be tuned by adjusting the interlayer spacing. By providing insights into the ion transport in the 2D confined ice, our work may inspire more design of monovalent ion-selective channels for efficient lithium separation.

CdAl4O7/CdO nanocomposites: green tea extract-mediated sol-gel auto-combustion synthesis, characterization, and study as a potential hydrogen storage material

In this article, we present the synthesis of binary CdAl4O7/CdO nanocomposites using green tea extracts and green chemistry methods for high-performance hydrogen storage. The green tea extract contains bioactive compounds (polyphenols) that act as reducing agents, which facilitate the reaction between metal ions and water. By examining the structural and morphological characteristics of the obtained substrates using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), it was demonstrated that the nanocomposites were successfully synthesized. We evaluated the electrochemical performance of the synthesized CdAl4O7/CdO nanocomposites using a three-electrode chronopotentiometry system. According to the results, the synthesized nanocomposites are capable of storing 1750 mAh/g of hydrogen at a constant current of 1 Amp. By using green tea extract as a natural structure-directing agent, the CdAl4O7/CdO nanocomposite can be developed more sustainably as high-performance hydrogen storage materials. Ultimately, this work contributes to the advancement of sustainable energy storage through the synthesis of a promising new material.

A fast ceramic mixed OH-/H+ ionic conductor for low temperature fuel cells

Low temperature ionic conducting materials such as OH- and H+ ionic conductors are important electrolytes for electrochemical devices. Here we show the discovery of mixed OH-/H+ conduction in ceramic materials. SrZr0.8Y0.2O3-δ exhibits a high ionic conductivity of approximately 0.01 S cm-1 at 90 °C in both water and wet air, which has been demonstrated by direct ammonia fuel cells. Neutron diffraction confirms the presence of OD bonds in the lattice of deuterated SrZr0.8Y0.2O3-δ. The OH- ionic conduction of CaZr0.8Y0.2O3-δ in water was demonstrated by electrolysis of both H218O and D2O. The ionic conductivity of CaZr0.8Y0.2O3-δ in 6 M KOH solution is around 0.1 S cm-1 at 90 °C, 100 times higher than that in pure water, indicating increased OH- ionic conductivity with a higher concentration of feed OH- ions. Density functional theory calculations suggest the diffusion of OH- ions relies on oxygen vacancies and temporarily formed hydrogen bonds. This opens a window to discovering new ceramic ionic conducting materials for near ambient temperature fuel cells, electrolysers and other electrochemical devices.

Chemresistive Detection of NO2 of ppb Level in Humid Air at 350 K Using Azo-Spaced Polycroconamide

Organic molecules are of great interest for gas sensing applications. However, achieving high-performance gas sensors with high sensitivity, fast response, low consumption, and workability in humid conditions is still challenging. Herein, we report the rational design and synthesis of an ion-in-conjugation polymer, PADC (poly-4,4'-azodianiline-croconamide), obtained by the condensation of croconic acid with 4-4'diaminoazobenzene for gas sensing under humid conditions. The as-fabricated PADC-based gas sensor exhibits ultrahigh sensitivity (802.7 ppm-1 at 1 ppm), subppb detection limit, and high selectivity under humid air with an 80% humidity effect at a temperature down to 350 K. PADC shows good planarity, excellent thermostability, and a narrow band gap of 1.2 eV because of azobenzene fragments spacing previously repulsed biphenyl rings. Compared to previous humidity immunity works, PADC-based sensors realized humidity immunity at a relatively lower temperature, resulting in lower energy consumption.

Anomalously enhanced ion transport and uptake in functionalized angstrom-scale two-dimensional channels

Emulating angstrom-scale dynamics of the highly selective biological ion channels is a challenging task. Recent work on angstrom-scale artificial channels has expanded our understanding of ion transport and uptake mechanisms under confinement. However, the role of chemical environment in such channels is still not well understood. Here, we report the anomalously enhanced transport and uptake of ions under confined MoS2-based channels that are ~five angstroms in size. The ion uptake preference in the MoS2-based channels can be changed by the selection of surface functional groups and ion uptake sequence due to the interplay between kinetic and thermodynamic factors that depend on whether the ions are mixed or not prior to uptake. Our work offers a holistic picture of ion transport in 2D confinement and highlights ion interplay in this regime.

Bioinspired Heterogeneous Construction of Lignocellulose-Reinforced COF Membranes for Efficient Proton Conduction

The exponential interest in covalent organic frameworks (COFs) arises from the direct correlation between their diverse and intriguing properties and the modular design principle. However, the insufficient interlamellar interaction among COF nanosheets greatly hinders the formation of defect-free membranes. Therefore, developing a methodology for the facile fabrication of these materials remains an enticing and highly desirable objective. Herein, ultrahigh proton conductivity and superior stability are achieved by taking advantage of COF composite membranes where 2D TB-COF nanosheets are linked by 1D lignocellulosic nanofibrils (LCNFs) through π-π and electrostatic interactions to form a robust and ordered structure. Notably, the high concentration of -SO3 H groups within the COF pores and the abundant proton transport paths at COFs-LCNFs interfaces impart composite membranes ultrahigh proton conductivity (0.348 S cm-1 at 80 °C and 100% RH). Moreover, the directional migration of protons along the stacked nanochannels of COFs is facilitated by oxygen atoms on the keto groups, as demonstrated by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The simple design concept and reliable operation of the demonstrated mixed-dimensional composite membrane are expected to provide an ideal platform for next-generation conductive materials.

A Universal Strategy for Synthesis of 2D Ternary Transition Metal Phosphorous Chalcogenides

The 2D ternary transition metal phosphorous chalcogenides (TMPCs) have attracted extensive research interest due to their widely tunable band gap, rich electronic properties, inherent magnetic and ferroelectric properties. However, the synthesis of TMPCs via chemical vapor deposition (CVD) is still challenging since it is difficult to control reactions among multi-precursors. Here, a subtractive element growth mechanism is proposed to controllably synthesize the TMPCs. Based on the growth mechanism, the TMPCs including FePS3 , FePSe3 , MnPS3 , MnPSe3 , CdPS3 , CdPSe3 , In2 P3 S9 , and SnPS3 are achieved successfully and further confirmed by Raman, second-harmonic generation (SHG), and scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM). The typical TMPCs-SnPS3 shows a strong SHG signal at 1064 nm, with an effective nonlinear susceptibility χ(2) of 8.41 × 10-11  m V-1 , which is about 8 times of that in MoS2 . And the photodetector based on CdPSe3 exhibits superior detection performances with responsivity of 582 mA W-1 , high detectivity of 3.19 × 1011  Jones, and fast rise time of 611 µs, which is better than most previously reported TMPCs-based photodetectors. These results demonstrate the high quality of TMPCs and promote the exploration of the optical properties of 2D TMPCs for their applications in optoelectronics.

Moisture-Electric-Moisture-Sensitive Heterostructure Triggered Proton Hopping for Quality-Enhancing Moist-Electric Generator

Moisture-enabled electricity (ME) is a method of converting the potential energy of water in the external environment into electrical energy through the interaction of functional materials with water molecules and can be directly applied to energy harvesting and signal expression. However, ME can be unreliable in numerous applications due to its sluggish response to moisture, thus sacrificing the value of fast energy harvesting and highly accurate information representation. Here, by constructing a moisture-electric-moisture-sensitive (ME-MS) heterostructure, we develop an efficient ME generator with ultra-fast electric response to moisture achieved by triggering Grotthuss protons hopping in the sensitized ZnO, which modulates the heterostructure built-in interfacial potential, enables quick response (0.435 s), an unprecedented ultra-fast response rate of 972.4 mV s-1, and a durable electrical signal output for 8 h without any attenuation. Our research provides an efficient way to generate electricity and important insight for a deeper understanding of the mechanisms of moisture-generated carrier migration in ME generator, which has a more comprehensive working scene and can serve as a typical model for human health monitoring and smart medical electronics design.

The assembly of [Mo2O2S2]2+ units depends on the configuration of polydentate phosphonic acid templates, leading to novel topologies with enhanced nuclearity and complexity. The variation of the assembled structures also gives rise to distinct proton-conducting properties.

Extreme Ion-Transport Inorganic 2D Membranes for Nanofluidic Applications

Inorganic 2D materials offer a new approach to controlling mass diffusion at the nanoscale. Controlling ion transport in nanofluidics is key to energy conversion, energy storage, water purification, and numerous other applications wherein persistent challenges for efficient separation must be addressed. The recent development of 2D membranes in the emerging field of energy harvesting, water desalination, and proton/Li-ion production in the context of green energy and environmental technology is herein discussed. The fundamental mechanisms, 2D membrane fabrication, and challenges toward practical applications are highlighted. Finally, the fundamental issues of thermodynamics and kinetics are outlined along with potential membrane designs that must be resolved to bridge the gap between lab-scale experiments and production levels.

Chitosan-Linked Dual-Sulfonate COF Nanosheet Proton Exchange Membrane with High Robustness and Conductivity

2D materials that can provide long-range ordered channels in thin-film form are highly desirable for proton exchange membranes (PEMs). Covalent organic framework nanosheets (CONs) are promising 2D materials possessing intrinsic porosity and high processability. However, the potential of CONs in PEMs is limited by loose sheet stacking and interfacial grain boundary, which lead to unsatisfied mechanical property and discontinuous conduction pathway. Herein, chitosan (CS), a natural polymer with rich NH2 groups, is designed as the linker of dual-sulfonate CONs (CON-2(SO3 H)) to obtain CON-2(SO3 H)-based membrane. Ultrathin CON-2(SO3 H) with high crystallinity and large lateral size is synthesized at water-octanoic acid interface. The high flexibility of CS chains and their electrostatic interactions with SO3 H groups of CON-2(SO3 H) enable effective connection of CON-2(SO3 H), thus endowing membrane dense structure and exceptional stability. The stacked CON-2(SO3 H) constructs regular hydrophilic nanochannels containing high-density SO3 H groups, and the electrostatic interactions between CON-2(SO3 H) and CS form interfacial acid-base pairs transfer channels. Consequently, CON-2(SO3 H)@CS membrane simultaneously achieves superior proton conductivity of 353 mS cm-1 (under 80 °C hydrated condition) and tensile strength of 95 MPa. This work highlights the advantages of proton-conducting porous CON-2(SO3 H) in advanced PEMs and paves a way in fabricating robust CON-based membranes for various applications.

2D CdPS3-based versatile superionic conductors

Ion transport in nanochannels is crucial for applications in life science, filtration, and energy storage. However, multivalent ion transport is more difficult than the monovalent analogues due to the steric effect and stronger interactions with channel walls, and the ion mobility decreases significantly as temperature decreases. Although many kinds of solid ionic conductors (SICs) have been developed, they can attain practically useful conductivities (0.01 S cm-1) only for monovalent ions above 0 °C. Here, we report a class of versatile superionic conductors, monolayer CdPS3 nanosheets-based membranes intercalated with diverse cations with a high density up to ∼2 nm-2. They exhibit unexpectedly similar superhigh ion conductivities for monovalent (K+, Na+, Li+) and multivalent ions (Ca2+, Mg2+, Al3+), ∼0.01 to 0.8 S cm-1 in the temperature range of -30 ‒ 90 °C, which are one to two orders of magnitude higher than those of the corresponding best SICs. We reveal that the high conductivity originates from the concerted movement of high-density cations in the well-ordered nanochannels with high mobility and low energy barrier. Our work opens an avenue for designing superionic conductors that can conduct various cations and provides possibilities for discovering unusual nanofluidic phenomena in nanocapillaries.

Building intercalation structure for high ionic conductivity via aliovalent substitution

Two-dimensional (2D) materials, which possess robust nanochannels, high flux and allow scalable fabrication, provide new platforms for nanofluids. Highly efficient ionic conductivity can facilitate the application of nanofluidic devices for modern energy conversion and ionic sieving. Herein, we propose a novel strategy of building an intercalation crystal structure with negative surface charge and mobile interlamellar ions via aliovalent substitution to boost ionic conductivity. The Li2xM1-xPS3 (M = Cd, Ni, Fe) crystals obtained by the solid-state reaction exhibit distinct capability of water absorption and apparant variation of interlayer spacing (from 0.67 to 1.20 nm). The assembled membranes show the ultrahigh ionic conductivity of 1.20 S/cm for Li0.5Cd0.75PS3 and 1.01 S/cm for Li0.6Ni0.7PS3. This facile strategy may inspire the research in other 2D materials with higher ionic transport performance for nanofluids.

Ion-Specific Nanoconfinement Effect in Multilayered Graphene Membranes: A Combined Nuclear Magnetic Resonance and Computational Study

Ion adsorption within nanopores is involved in numerous applications. However, a comprehensive understanding of the fundamental relationship between in-pore ion concentration and pore size, particularly in the sub-2 nm range, is scarce. This study investigates the ion-species-dependent concentration in multilayered graphene membranes (MGMs) with tunable nanoslit sizes (0.5-1.6 nm) using nuclear magnetic resonance and computational simulations. For Na⁺-based electrolytes in MGMs, the concentration of anions in graphene nanoslits increases in correlation with their chaotropic properties. As the nanoslit size decreases, the concentration of chaotropic ion (BF₄^-) increases, whereas the concentration of kosmotropic ions (Cit^3-, PO₄^3-) and other ions (Ac^-, F^-) decreases or changes slightly. Notably, anions remain more concentrated than counter Na⁺ ions, leading to electroneutrality breakdown and unipolar anion packing in MGMs. A continuum modeling approach, integrating molecular dynamic simulation with the Poisson-Boltzmann model, elucidates these observations by considering water-mediated ion-graphene non-electrostatic interactions and charge screening from graphene walls.

Confined Ionic-Liquid-Mediated Cation Diffusion through Layered Membranes for High-Performance Osmotic Energy Conversion

Ion-selective membranes act as the core components in osmotic energy harvesting, but remain with deficiencies such as low ion selectivity and a tendency to swell. 2D nanofluidic membranes as competitive candidates are still subjected to limited mass transport brought by insufficient wetting and poor stability in water. Here, an ionic-liquid-infused graphene oxide (GO@IL) membrane with ultrafast ion transport ability is reported, and how the confined ionic liquid mediates selective cation diffusion is revealed. The infusion of ionic liquids endows the 2D membrane with excellent mechanical strength, anti-swelling properties, and good stability in aqueous electrolytes. Importantly, immiscible ionic liquids also provide a medium, allowing partial dehydration for ultrafast ion transport. Through molecular dynamics simulation and finite element modeling, that GO nanosheets induce ionic liquids to rearrange, bringing in additional space charges, which can be coupled with GO synergistically, is proved. By mixing 0.5/0.01 m NaCl solution, the power density can achieve a record value of ≈6.7 W m^-2 , outperforming state-of-art GO-based membranes. This work opens up a new route for boosting nanofluidic energy conversion because of the diversity of the ILs and 2D materials.

Functionalized graphene oxide-based lamellar membranes for organic solvent nanofiltration applications

In this study, two-dimensional graphene oxide-based novel membranes were fabricated by modifying the surface of graphene oxide nanosheets with six-armed poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) at room conditions. The as-modified PEGylated graphene oxide (PGO) membranes with unique layered structures and large interlayer spacing (∼1.12 nm) were utilized for organic solvent nanofiltration applications. The as-prepared 350 nm-thick PGO membrane offers a superior separation (>99%) against evans blue, methylene blue and rhodamine B dyes along with high methanol permeance ∼ 155 ± 10 L m^-2 h^-1, which is 10-100 times high compared to pristine GO membranes. Additionally, these membranes are stable for up to 20 days in organic solvent. Hence the results suggested that the as-synthesized PGO membranes with superior separation efficiency for dye molecules in organic solvent can be used in future for organic solvent nanofiltration application.

Regulating the Electrical and Mechanical Properties of TaS2 Films via van der Waals and Electrostatic Interaction for High Performance Electromagnetic Interference Shielding

Low-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have unique electronic structure, vibration modes, and physicochemical properties, making them suitable for fundamental studies and cutting-edge applications such as silicon electronics, optoelectronics, and bioelectronics. However, the brittleness, low toughness, and poor mechanical and electrical stabilities of TMD-based films limit their application. Herein, a TaS2 freestanding film with ultralow void ratio of 6.01% is restacked under the effect of bond-free van der Waals (vdW) interactions within the staggered 2H-TaS2 nanosheets. The restacked films demonstrated an exceptionally high electrical conductivity of 2,666 S cm-1, electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness (EMI SE) of 41.8 dB, and absolute EMI SE (SSE/t) of 27,859 dB cm2 g-1, which is the highest value reported for TMD-based materials. The bond-free vdW interactions between the adjacent 2H-TaS2 nanosheets provide a natural interfacial strain relaxation, achieving excellent flexibility without rupture after 1,000 bends. In addition, the TaS2 nanosheets are further combined with the polymer fibers of bacterial cellulose and aramid nanofibers via electrostatic interactions to significantly enhance the tensile strength and flexibility of the films while maintaining their high electrical conductivity and EMI SE.This work provides promising alternatives for conventional materials used in EMI shielding and nanodevices.

Lamellar Graphene Oxide-Based Composite Membranes for Efficient Separation of Heavy Metal Ions and Desalination of Water

Sufficient efforts have been carried out to fabricate highly efficient graphene oxide (GO) lamellar membranes for heavy metal ion separation and desalination of water. However, selectivity for small ions remains a major problem. Herein, GO was modified by using onion extractive (OE) and a bioactive phenolic compound, i.e., quercetin. The as-prepared modified materials were fabricated into membranes and used for separation of heavy metal ions and water desalination. The GO/onion extract (GO/OE) composite membrane with a thickness of 350 nm shows an excellent rejection efficiency for several heavy metal ions such as Cr⁶⁺ (∼87.5%), As³⁺ (∼89.5%), Cd²⁺ (∼93.0%), and Pb²⁺ (∼99.5%) and a good water permeance of ∼460 ± 20 L m^-2 h^-1 bar^-1. In addition, a GO/quercetin (GO/Q) composite membrane is also fabricated from quercetin for comparative studies. Quercetin is an active ingredient of onion extractives (2.1% w/w). The GO/Q composite membranes show good rejection up to ∼78.0, ∼80.5, ∼88.0, and 95.2% for Cr⁶⁺, As³⁺, Cd²⁺, and Pb²⁺, respectively, with a DI water permeance of ∼150 ± 10 L m^-2 h^-1 bar^-1. Further, both membranes are used for water desalination by measuring rejection of small ions such as NaCl, Na₂SO₄, MgCl₂, and MgSO₄. The resulting membranes show >70% rejection for small ions. In addition, both membranes are used for filtration of Indus River water and the GO/Q membrane shows remarkably high separation efficiency and makes river water suitable for drinking purpose. Furthermore, the GO/QE composite membrane is highly stable up to ∼25 days under acidic, basic, and neutral environments as compared to GO/Q composite and pristine GO-based membranes.

Influence of Operating and Electrochemical Parameters on PEMFC Performance: A Simulation Study

Proton exchange membrane fuel cell, or polymer electrolyte fuel cell, (PEMFC) has received a significant amount of attention for green energy applications due to its low carbon emission and less other toxic pollution capacity. Herein, we develop a three-dimensional (3D) computational fluid dynamic model. The values of temperature, pressure, relative humidity, exchange coefficient, reference current density (RCD), and porosity values of the gas diffusion layer (GDL) were taken from the published literature. The results demonstrate that the performance of the cell is improved by modifying temperature and operating pressure. Current density is shown to degrade with the rising temperature as explored in this study. The findings show that at 353 K, the current density decreases by 28% compared to that at 323 K. In contrast, studies have shown that totally humidified gas passing through the gas channel results in a 10% higher current density yield, and that an evaluation of a 19% higher RCD value results in a similar current density yield.

Halogen Bond-Driven Aggregation-Induced Emission Skeleton: N-(3-(Phenylamino)allylidene) Aniline Hydrochloride

Aggregation-induced emission (AIE) is a unique photophysical process, and its emergence brings a revolutionary change in luminescence. However, AIE-based research has been limited to a few classical molecular skeletons, which is unfavorable for in-depth studies of the photophysical characteristics of AIE and the full exploitation of their potential values. There is an urgent need to develop new skeletons to rise to the challenges of an insufficient number of AIE core structures and difficult modification. Here, we report a novel dumbbell AIE skeleton, in which two phenyls are connected through (E)-3-iminoprop-1-en-1-amine. This skeleton shows extremely strong solid-state emission with an absolute quantum yield up to 69.5%, a large Stokes shift, and typical AIE characteristics, which well resolves the challenge of difficult modification and low luminous efficiency of the traditional AIE skeletons. One-step reaction, high yield, and diversified modification endow the skeleton with great scalability from simple to complicated, or from symmetrical to asymmetrical structures, which establishes the applicability of the skeleton in various scenarios. These molecules self-assemble into highly ordered layer-, rod-, petal-, hollow pipe-, or helix-like nanostructures, which contribute to strong AIE emission. Crystallographic data reveal the highly ordered layer structures of the aggregates with different substituents, and a novel halogen bond-driven self-assembly mechanism that restricts intramolecular motion is clearly discovered. Taking advantage of these merits, a full-band emission system from green to red is successfully established, which displays great potential in the construction of light-emitting films and advanced light-emitting diodes. The discovery of this AIE skeleton may motivate a huge potential application value in luminescent materials and lead to hitherto impossible technological innovations.

Two-Dimensional Materials Applied in Membranes of Redox Flow Battery

Redox flow batteries (RFBs) are one of the most promising techniques to store and convert green and renewable energy, benefiting from their advantages of high safety, flexible design and long lifespan. Membranes with fast and selective ions transport are required for the advances of RFBs. Remarkably, two-dimensional (2D) materials with high mechanical and chemical stability, strict size exclusion and abundantly modifiable functional groups, have attracted extensive attentions in the applications of energy fields. Herein, the improvements and perspectives of 2D materials working for ionic transportation and sieving in RFBs membranes are presented. The characteristics of various materials and their advantages and disadvantages in the applications of RFBs membranes particularly are focused. This review is expected to provide a guidance for the design of membranes based on 2D materials for RFBs.

Short hydrogen-bond network confined on COF surfaces enables ultrahigh proton conductivity

The idea of spatial confinement has gained widespread interest in myriad applications. Especially, the confined short hydrogen-bond (SHB) network could afford an attractive opportunity to enable proton transfer in a nearly barrierless manner, but its practical implementation has been challenging. Herein, we report a SHB network confined on the surface of ionic covalent organic framework (COF) membranes decorated by densely and uniformly distributed hydrophilic ligands. Combined experimental and theoretical evidences have pointed to the confinement of water molecules allocated to each ligand, achieving the local enrichment of hydronium ions and the concomitant formation of SHBs in water-hydronium domains. These overlapped water-hydronium domains create an interconnected SHB network, which yields an unprecedented ultrahigh proton conductivity of 1389 mS cm⁻¹ at 90 °C, 100% relative humidity.

Characteristics of Gaseous/Liquid Hydrocarbon Adsorption Based on Numerical Simulation and Experimental Testing

Hydrocarbon vapor adsorption experiments (HVAs) are one of the most prevalent methods used to evaluate the proportion of adsorbed state oil, critical in understanding the recoverable resources of shale oil. HVAs have some limitations, which cannot be directly used to evaluate the proportion of adsorbed state oil. The proportion of adsorbed state oil from HVA is always smaller than that in shale oil reservoirs, which is caused by the difference in adsorption characteristics of liquid and gaseous hydrocarbons. The results of HVA need to be corrected. In this paper, HVA was conducted with kaolinite, an important component of shale. A new method is reported here to evaluate the proportion of adsorbed state oil. Molecular dynamics simulations (MDs) of gaseous/liquid hydrocarbons with the same temperature and pressure as the HVAs were used as a reference to reveal the errors in the HVAs evaluation from the molecular scale. We determine the amount of free state of hydrocarbons by HVAs, and then calculate the proportion of adsorbed state oil by the liquid hydrocarbon MD simulation under the same conditions. The results show that gaseous hydrocarbons adsorptions are monolayer at low relative pressures and bilayer at high relative pressures. The liquid hydrocarbons adsorption is multilayer adsorption. The adsorption capacity of liquid hydrocarbons is over 2.7 times higher than gaseous hydrocarbons. The new method will be more effective and accurate to evaluate the proportion of adsorbed state oil.

Recent Development in Laminar Transition Metal Dichalcogenides-based Membranes Towards Water Desalination: A Review

Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs)-based laminar membranes have gained significant interest in energy storage, fuel cell, gas separation, wastewater treatment, and desalination applications due to single layer structure, good functionality, high mechanical strength, and chemical resistivity. Herein, we review the recent efforts and development on TMDCs-based laminar membranes, and focus is given on their fabrication strategies. Further, TMDCs-based laminar membranes for water purification and seawater desalination are discussed in detail. Finally, present their merits, limits and future challenges needed in this area.

Potential Applications of Nickel-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks and their Derivatives

Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs), a novel class of porous extended crystalline structures, are favored in different fields of heterogeneous catalysis, CO₂ separation and conversion, and energy storage (supercapacitors) due to their convenience of synthesis, structural tailor-ability, tunable pore size, high porosity, large specific surface area, devisable structures, and adjustable compositions. Nickel (Ni) is a ubiquitous element extensively applied in various fields of catalysis and energy storage due to its low cost, high abundance, thermal and chemical stability, and environmentally benign nature. Ni-based MOFs and their derivatives provide us with the opportunity to modify different properties of the Ni center to improve their potential as heterogeneous catalysts or energy storage materials. The recent achievements of Ni-MOFs and their derivatives as catalysts, membrane materials for CO₂ separation and conversion, electrode materials and their respective performance have been discussed in this review.

Deposition of Vertically Aligned Ag/Ag2 S Nanoflakes on EGaIn Particles for Humidity Sensing

Liquid metals, which possess both good electrical conductivity and liquid-like processability, have drawn much attention recently. They are also capable of acting as synthesis templates to guide the deposition of other functional materials. Herein, through an in-situ galvanic replacement reaction assisted by ultrasonication, core-shell EGaIn/Ag particles composed of EGaIn cores and vertically aligned Ag nanoflakes as shells were prepared; they were further sulfurized to yield ternary EGaIn/Ag/Ag₂ S core-shell composite particles. A humidity sensor based on EGaIn/Ag/Ag₂ S particles showed much higher sensing response than EGaIn and EGaIn/Ag. Such superior performance could be attributed to the n-type semiconducting character of Ag₂ S allowing it to receive electrons from water molecules at low humidity, and its highly hydrophilic surface allowing it to absorb more water molecules at higher humidity so as to enable the formation of ion-conductive paths.

Advancements of Polyvinylpyrrolidone-Based Polymer Electrolyte Membranes for Electrochemical Energy Conversion and Storage Devices

Polymer electrolyte membranes (PEMs) play vital roles in electrochemical energy conversion and storage devices, such as polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC), redox flow battery, and water electrolysis. As the crucial component of these devices, PEMs need to possess high ion conductivity and electronic insulation, remarkable mechanical and chemical stability, and outstanding isolation function for the materials on both sides of the cathode and anode. Polyvinylpyrrolidone has received widespread attention in the research of PEMs owing to its tertiary amine basic groups and exceptional hydrophilic properties. This review focuses on the application status of polyvinylpyrrolidone-based PEMs in PEMFC, vanadium redox flow battery, and alkaline water electrolysis, and describes in detail the key scientific problems in these fields, providing constructive suggestions and guidance for the application of polyvinylpyrrolidone-based PEMs in electrochemical energy conversion and storage devices.

Recent progress on fabrication methods of graphene-based membranes for water purification, gas separation, and energy sustainability

Graphene-based layered materials have got significant interest in membrane technology for water desalination, gas separation, organic nanofiltration, pervaporation, proton exchange applications, etc. and show remarkable results. Up to date, various methods have been developed for fabrication of high performance membrane. Most of them are only suitable for research purposes, but not appropriate for mass transport barrier and membrane applications that require large-area synthesis. In this comprehensive review, we summarized the current synthesis and fabrication methods of graphene-based membranes. Emphasis will be given on fabrication of both graphene-based nanoporous and lamellar membranes. Finally, we discuss the current engineering hurdles and future research directions yet to be explored for fabrication of such membranes.

Superprotonic Conductivity of UiO-66 with Missing-Linker Defects in Aqua-Ammonia Vapor

The design and preparation of proton-conducting metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with superconductivity are of significance for the proton-exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC). Introducing functional structural defects to enhance proton conductivity is a good approach. Here, we synthesized a series of UiO-66 (first synthesized in the University of Oslo) with missing-linker defects and investigated the effect of defect numbers on the proton conductivity of the samples. Among them, 60-UiO-66-1.8 (60 represents the synthesis temperature and 1.8 the number of defects) prepared with 3-mercaptopropionic acid as a modulator has the best proton conductivity, which is 3 × 10^-2 S cm^-1 at 100 °C and under 98% relative humidity (RH). The acidic sites induced by missing-linker defects further promote the chemisorption of ammonia molecules, resulting in the formation of a richer hydrogen-bond network and hence boosting the proton conductivity to 1.04 × 10^-1 S cm^-1 at 80 °C, which is one of the highest values among the reported MOF-based proton conductor. Therefore, this work provides a new strategy for enhancing proton conduction in MOF-based materials.

Novel application of ion exchange membranes for preparing effective silver and copper based antibacterial membranes

Ion exchange membranes (IEMs) are widely used in water treatment applications such as electrodialysis. However, the exploration of IEMs as effective antibacterial food contact materials (e.g., food packaging membranes) against pathogenic bacteria to ensure food safety has not been reported. Here, we report a simple but effective method to prepare high performance antibacterial membranes via ion exchange coupled with in-situ reduction. The general membrane properties are characterized using SEM, EDS, FTIR, XPS, XRD, DSC, TGA, water uptake, etc. The distribution of silver and copper in the membranes are generally in line with the distribution of sulfur, indicating that the antibacterial ions are introduced into the membranes via ion exchange and are bonded with the sulfonate groups in the membranes. The antibacterial performance is investigated using zone of inhibition tests and continuous bacteria growth inhibition tests. All of the prepared membranes show obvious antibacterial activities compared to the bare cation exchange membranes. The diameters of inhibition zone against Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) are all larger than those of Escherichia coli (E. coli), indicating that the prepared membranes are more efficient in inhibiting S. aureus compared to E. coli. Furthermore, the silver-based membrane shows more sustainable antibacterial activities compared to the copper-based membrane. Especially, the results clearly reveal that the silver-based membrane is capable of killing bacteria instead of just inhibiting the growth of bacteria. We have shown for the first time that membranes derived from IEMs have the potential as food contact materials to inhibit the growth of pathogenic bacteria so as to eliminate the risk of bacterial infections and meanwhile delay food spoilage due to bacteria growth.

One-Atom-Thick Crystals as Emerging Proton Sieves

Two-dimensional (2D) crystals, despite their atomic thickness, have long been considered as impermeable membranes to all molecules and atoms under ambient conditions: even the smallest of atoms, hydrogen, is expected to take billions of years to penetrate the 2D lattice covered with dense electron clouds. Recently it has been found that monolayer graphene, hexagonal boron nitride, and some other one-atom-thick crystals are highly permeable to protons, raising fundamental questions about the details of the transport process. In this Perspective, we review the mechanism of proton transport through 2D crystals and the related room-temperature quantum effects; the potential applications of 2D membranes in proton-related separation and sieving techniques, including proton exchange membranes and hydrogen isotope separation; and factors that enhance proton permeation and in turn influence 2D membrane design.

Review elucidating graphene derivatives (GO/rGO) supported metal sulfides based hybrid nanocomposites for efficient photocatalytic dye degradation

Photocatalysis by utilizing semiconductors for the removal of toxic pollutants has gained tremendous interest for remediation purposes. The organic pollutants usually include; pesticides, dyes and other phenolic compounds. An imperative restraint associated with the photocatalytic effectiveness of the catalyst is the rapid recombination of the light generated electrons and holes. The particle agglomeration and electron-hole recombination hinders the rate of pollutant removal. For decades, researchers have used metal-sulfides efficiently for photocatalytic dye degradation. The recent use of hybrid nanomaterials with the combination of graphene derivatives such as graphene oxide and reduced graphene oxide (GO/rGO)-metal sulfide has gained interest. These composites have displayed an impressive upsurge in the photocatalytic activity of materials. The current review describes the various researches on dye photodegradation by employing (GO/rGO)-metal sulfide, exhibiting a boosted potential for photocatalytic dye degradation. A comprehensive study on (CuS, ZnS and CdS)–GO/rGO hybrid composites have been discussed in detail for effective photocatalytic dye degradation in this review. Astonishingly improved dye degradation rates were observed in all these studies employing such hybrid composites. The several studies described in the review highlighted the varying degradation rates based on diverse research parameters and efficacy of graphene derivatives for enhancement of photocatalytic activity.

Graphene-based composite membranes for isotope separation: challenges and opportunities

Graphene-based membranes have got significant attention in wastewater treatment, desalination, gas separation, pervaporation, fuel cell, energy storage applications due to their supreme properties. Recently, studies have confirmed that graphene based membranes can also use for separation of isotope due to their ideal thickness, large surface area, good affinity, 2D structure etc. Herein, we review the latest groundbreaking progresses in both theoretically and experimentally chemical science and engineering of both nanoporous and lamellar graphene-based membrane for separation of different isotopes. Especially focus will be given on the current issues, engineering hurdles, and limitations of membranes designed for isotope separation. Finally, we offer our experiences on how to overcome these issues, and present an ideas for future improvement and research directions. We hope, this article is provide a timely knowledge and information to scientific communities, and those who are already working in this direction.

Two-Dimensional Transition Metal Carbides and Nitrides (MXenes) for Water Purification and Antibacterial Applications

Two-dimensional (2D) materials such as graphene, graphene oxide (GO), metal carbides and nitrides (MXenes), transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDS), boron nitride (BN), and layered double hydroxide (LDH) metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been widely investigated as potential candidates in various separation applications because of their high mechanical strength, large surface area, ideal chemical and thermal stability, simplicity, ease of functionalization, environmental comparability, and good antibacterial performance. Recently, MXene as a new member of the 2D polymer family has attracted significant attention in water purification, desalination, gas separation, antibacterial, and antifouling applications. Herein, we review the most recent progress in the fabrication, preparation, and modification methods of MXene-based lamellar membranes with the emphasis on applications for water purification and desalination. Moreover, the antibacterial properties of MXene-based membranes show a significant potential for commercial use in water purification. Thus, this review provides a directional guide for future development in this emerging technology.

High Proton Conductivity of a Cadmium Metal-Organic Framework Constructed from Pyrazolecarboxylate and Its Hybrid Membrane

A new type of metal-organic framework, [Cd₂(pdc)(H₂O)(DMA)₂]_n (pdc = 3,5-pyrazoledicarboxylic acid; DMA = dimethylamine), named Cd-MOF, was synthesized and characterized. There are regular rectangular pore channels containing a large number of dimethylamine cations in the crystal structure. AC impedance test results show the proton conductivity of Cd-MOF reaches 1.15 × 10^-3 S cm^-1 at 363 K and 98% RH. In order for its application in fuel cells, the Cd-MOF was introduced into a sulfonated polyphenylene oxide matrix to prepare a hybrid membrane, and the proton conductivity of the hybrid membrane has a high value of 2.64 × 10^-1 S cm^-1 at 343 K and 98% RH, which is higher than those of most MOF polymer hybrid membranes. The proton conductivity of the hybrid membrane of the SPPO polymer still maintains a certain degree of stability in a wide temperature range. To the best of our knowledge, it is the first proton exchange membrane that combines pyrazolecarboxylate cadmium MOFs and an SPPO polymer with high proton conductivity and good stability. This research may help to further develop the application of MOFs in the field of proton exchange membrane fuel cells.

Recent progress in decontamination system against chemical and biological materials: challenges and future perspectives

Environmental contamination is one of the key issues of developing countries in recent days, and several types of methods and technologies have been developed to overcome these issues. This paper highlights the importance of decontamination in a contaminated environment that normally precedes protection, detection and identification followed by medical support. Further, this paper especially focuses on individual and collective NBC decontamination required on navy ships and correspondingly presents solutions (viable and economical) through the use of indigenously developed decontamination equipment. The paper also highlights the integration of various decontamination technologies with pre-existing ship decontamination systems, indicating the need for various decontaminants. Finally, we will also focus on new decontamination systems based on nanomaterials and enzymes and their utilization.
