Optical Image Sensors for Smart Analytical Chemiluminescence Biosensors

Optical biosensors have emerged as a powerful tool in analytical biochemistry, offering high sensitivity and specificity in the detection of various biomolecules. This article explores the advancements in the integration of optical biosensors with microfluidic technologies, creating lab-on-a-chip (LOC) platforms that enable rapid, efficient, and miniaturized analysis at the point of need. These LOC platforms leverage optical phenomena such as chemiluminescence and electrochemiluminescence to achieve real-time detection and quantification of analytes, making them ideal for applications in medical diagnostics, environmental monitoring, and food safety. Various optical detectors used for detecting chemiluminescence are reviewed, including single-point detectors such as photomultiplier tubes (PMT) and avalanche photodiodes (APD), and pixelated detectors such as charge-coupled devices (CCD) and complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) sensors. A significant advancement discussed in this review is the integration of optical biosensors with pixelated image sensors, particularly CMOS image sensors. These sensors provide numerous advantages over traditional single-point detectors, including high-resolution imaging, spatially resolved measurements, and the ability to simultaneously detect multiple analytes. Their compact size, low power consumption, and cost-effectiveness further enhance their suitability for portable and point-of-care diagnostic devices. In the future, the integration of machine learning algorithms with these technologies promises to enhance data analysis and interpretation, driving the development of more sophisticated, efficient, and accessible diagnostic tools for diverse applications.

Biomimetic Colored Coating toward Robust Display under Hostile Conditions

Structural colors particularly of the angle-independent category stemming from wavelength-dependent light scattering have aroused increasing interest due to their considerable applications spanning displays and sensors to detection. Nevertheless, these colors would be heavily altered and even disappear during practical applications, which is related with the variation of refractive index mismatch by liquid wetting/infiltrating. Inspired by bird feathers, we propose a simple deposition toward the coating with angle-independent structural color and superamphiphobicity. The coating is composed of ∼200 nm-sized channel-type structures between hollow silica and air nanostructures, exhibiting a robust sapphire blue color independent of intense liquid intrusion, which duplicates the characteristics of the back feather of Eastern Bluebird. A high color saturation and superamphiphobicity of the biomimetic coating are optimized by manipulating the coating parameters or adding black substances. Excellent durability under harsh conditions endows the coating with long-term service life in various extreme environments.

Full-scale polymer relaxation induced by single-chain confinement enhances mechanical stability of nanocomposites

Polymer nanocomposites with tuning functions are exciting candidates for various applications, and most current research has focused on static mechanical reinforcement. Actually, under service conditions of complex dynamic interference, stable dynamic mechanical properties with high energy dissipation become more critical. However, nanocomposites often exhibit a trade-off between static and dynamic mechanics, because of their contradictory underlying physics between chain crosslinking and chain relaxation. Here, we report a general strategy for constructing ultra-stable dynamic mechanical complex fluid nanocomposites with high energy dissipation by infusing complex fluids into the nanoconfined space. The key is to tailor full-scale polymer dynamics across an exceptionally broad timescale by single-chain confinement. These materials exhibit stable storage modulus (100 ~ 102  MPa) with high energy dissipation (loss factor > 0.4) over a broad frequency range (10-1 ~ 107  Hz)/temperature range (-35 ~ 85°C). In the loss factor > 0.4 region, their dynamic mechanical stability (rate of modulus change versus temperature (k)) is 10 times higher than that of conventional polymer nanocomposites.

Strong and Tough MXene Bridging-induced Conductive Nacre

Nacre is a classic model, providing an inspiration for fabricating high-performance bulk nanocomposites with the two-dimensional platelets. However, the "brick" of nacre, aragonite platelet, is an ideal building block for making high-performance bulk nanocomposites. Herein, we demonstrated a strong and tough conductive nacre through reassembling aragonite platelets with bridged by MXene nanosheets and hydrogen bonding, not only providing high mechanical properties but also excellent electrical conductivity. The flexural strength and fracture toughness of the obtained conductive nacre reach ~282 MPa and ~6.3 MPa m1/2, which is 1.6 and 1.6 times higher than that of natural nacre, respectively. These properties are attributed to densification and high orientation degree of the conductive nacre, which is effectively induced by the combined interactions of hydrogen bonding and MXene nanosheets bridging. The crack propagations in conductive nacre are effectively inhibited through crack deflection with hydrogen bonding, and MXene nanosheets bridging between aragonite platelets. In addition, our conductive nacre also provides a self-monitoring function for structural damage and offers exceptional electromagnetic interference shielding performance. Our strategy of reassembling the aragonite platelets exfoliated from waste nacre into high-performance artificial nacre, provides an avenue for fabricating high-performance bulk nanocomposites through the sustainable reutilization of shell resources.

Guidelines derived from biomineralized tissues for design and construction of high-performance biomimetic materials: from weak to strong

Living organisms in nature have undergone continuous evolution over billions of years, resulting in the formation of high-performance fracture-resistant biomineralized tissues such as bones and teeth to fulfill mechanical and biological functions, despite the fact that most inorganic biominerals that constitute biomineralized tissues are weak and brittle. During the long-period evolution process, nature has evolved a number of highly effective and smart strategies to design chemical compositions and structures of biomineralized tissues to enable superior properties and to adapt to surrounding environments. Most biomineralized tissues have hierarchically ordered structures consisting of very small building blocks on the nanometer scale (nanoparticles, nanofibers or nanoflakes) to reduce the inherent weaknesses and brittleness of corresponding inorganic biominerals, to prevent crack initiation and propagation, and to allow high defect tolerance. The bioinspired principles derived from biomineralized tissues are indispensable for designing and constructing high-performance biomimetic materials. In recent years, a large number of high-performance biomimetic materials have been prepared based on these bioinspired principles with a large volume of literature covering this topic. Therefore, a timely and comprehensive review on this hot topic is highly important and contributes to the future development of this rapidly evolving research field. This review article aims to be comprehensive, authoritative, and critical with wide general interest to the science community, summarizing recent advances in revealing the formation processes, composition, and structures of biomineralized tissues, providing in-depth insights into guidelines derived from biomineralized tissues for the design and construction of high-performance biomimetic materials, and discussing recent progress, current research trends, key problems, future main research directions and challenges, and future perspectives in this exciting and rapidly evolving research field.

Simultaneous Enhancement of Thermal Insulation and Impact Resistance in Transparent Bulk Composites

Transparent bulk glass is highly demanded in devices and components of daily life to transmit light and protect against external temperature and mechanical hazards. However, the application of glass is impeded by its poor functional performance, especially in terms of thermal isolation and impact resistance. Here, a glass composite integrating the nacre-inspired structure and shear stiffening gel (SSG) material is proposed. Benefiting from the combination of these two elements, this nacre-inspired SSG/glass composite (NSG) exhibits superior thermal insulation and impact resistance while maintaining transparency simultaneously. Specifically, the low thermal conductivity of the SSG combined with the anisotropic heat transfer capability of the nacre-inspired structure enhances the out-of-plane thermal insulation of NSG. The deformations over large volumes in nacre-inspired facesheets promote the deformation region of the SSG core, synergistic effect of tablet sliding mechanism in nacre-inspired structure and strain-rate enhancement in SSG material cause the superior impact resistance of overall panels in a wide range of impact velocities. NSG demonstrates outstanding properties such as transparency, light weight, impact resistance, and thermal insulation, which are major concerns for the application in engineering fields. In conclusion, this bioinspired SSG/glass composite opens new avenues to achieve comprehensive performance improvements for transparent structural materials.

From salt water to bioceramics: Mimic nature through pressure-controlled hydration and crystallization

Modern synthetic technology generally invokes high temperatures to control the hydration level of ceramics, but even the state-of-the-art technology can still only control the overall hydration content. Magically, natural organisms can produce bioceramics with tailorable hydration profiles and crystallization traits solely from amorphous precursors under physiological conditions. To mimic the biomineralization tactic, here, we report pressure-controlled hydration and crystallization in fabricated ceramics, solely from the amorphous precursors of purely inorganic gels (PIGs) synthesized from biocompatible aqueous solutions with most common ions in organisms (Ca2+, Mg2+, CO32-, and PO43-). Transparent ceramic tablets are directly produced by compressing the PIGs under mild pressure, while the pressure regulates the hydration characteristics and the subsequent crystallization behaviors of the synthesized ceramics. Among the various hydration species, the moderately bound and ordered water appears to be a key in regulating the crystallization rate. This nature-inspired study offers deeper insights into the magic behind biomineralization.

Bottom-Up Film-to-Bulk Assembly Toward Bioinspired Bulk Structural Nanocomposites

Biological materials, although composed of meager minerals and biopolymers, often exhibit amazing mechanical properties far beyond their components due to hierarchically ordered structures. Understanding their structure-properties relationships and replicating them into artificial materials would boost the development of bulk structural nanocomposites. Layered microstructure widely exists in biological materials, serving as the fundamental structure in nanosheet-based nacres and nanofiber-based Bouligand tissues, and implying superior mechanical properties. High-efficient and scalable fabrication of bioinspired bulk structural nanocomposites with precise layered microstructure is therefore important yet remains difficult. Here, one straightforward bottom-up film-to-bulk assembly strategy is focused for fabricating bioinspired layered bulk structural nanocomposites. The bottom-up assembly strategy inherently offers a methodology for precise construction of bioinspired layered microstructure in bulk form, availability for fabrication of bioinspired bulk structural nanocomposites with large sizes and complex shapes, possibility for design of multiscale interfaces, feasibility for manipulation of diverse heterogeneities. Not limited to discussing what has been achieved by using the current bottom-up film-to-bulk assembly strategy, it is also envisioned how to promote such an assembly strategy to better benefit the development of bioinspired bulk structural nanocomposites. Compared to other assembly strategies, the highlighted strategy provides great opportunities for creating bioinspired bulk structural nanocomposites on demand.

Multifunctional nacre-like materials

Nacre, the iridescent inner layer of seashells, displays an exceptional combination of strength and toughness due to its 'brick-wall' architecture. Significant research has been devoted to replicating nacre's architecture and its associated deformation and failure mechanisms. Using the resulting materials in applications necessitates adding functionalities such as self-healing, force sensing, bioactivity, heat conductivity and resistance, transparency, and electromagnetic interference shielding. Herein, progress in the fabrication, mechanics, and multi-functionality of nacre-like materials, particularly over the past three years is systematically and critically reviewed. The fabrication techniques reviewed include 3D printing, freeze-casting, mixing/coating-assembling, and laser engraving. The mechanical properties of the resulting materials are discussed in comparison with their constituents and previously developed nacre mimics. Subsequently, the progress in incorporating multifunctionalities and the resulting physical, chemical, and biological properties are evaluated. We finally provide suggestions based on 3D/4D printing, advanced modelling techniques, and machine elements to make reprogrammable nacre-like components with complex shapes and small building blocks, tackling some of the main challenges in the science and translation of these materials.

Toughening oxide glasses through paracrystallization

Glasses, unlike crystals, are intrinsically brittle due to the absence of microstructure-controlled toughening, creating fundamental constraints for their technological applications. Consequently, strategies for toughening glasses without compromising their other advantageous properties have been long sought after but elusive. Here we report exceptional toughening in oxide glasses via paracrystallization, using aluminosilicate glass as an example. By combining experiments and computational modelling, we demonstrate the uniform formation of crystal-like medium-range order clusters pervading the glass structure as a result of paracrystallization under high-pressure and high-temperature conditions. The paracrystalline oxide glasses display superior toughness, reaching up to 1.99 ± 0.06 MPa m1/2, surpassing any other reported bulk oxide glasses, to the best of our knowledge. We attribute this exceptional toughening to the excitation of multiple shear bands caused by a stress-induced inverse transformation from the paracrystalline to amorphous states, revealing plastic deformation characteristics. This discovery presents a potent strategy for designing highly damage-tolerant glass materials and emphasizes the substantial influence of atomic-level structural variation on the properties of oxide glasses.

Scalable Manufacturing of Mechanical Robust Bioinspired Ceramic-Resin Composites with Locally Tunable Heterogeneous Structures

Lightweight structural materials with a unique combination of high stiffness, strength, toughness, and hardness, are highly desired yet challenging to be artificially fabricated. Biological structural materials, on the other hand, ingeniously integrate multiple mutually exclusive mechanical properties together relying on their hierarchically heterogeneous structures bonded with gradient interfaces. Here, a scalable bottom-up approach combining continuous nanofiber-assisted evaporation-induced self-assembly with laminating, pressure-less sintering and resin infiltration is reported to fabricate bioinspired heterogeneous ceramic-resin composites with locally tunable microstructure to fulfill specific properties. A gradient interlayer is introduced to provide a gradual transition between adjacent heterogeneous layers, effectively alleviating their property mismatch. The optimized heterogeneous nacre-like composite, as a demonstration, exhibits an attractive combination of low density (≈2.8 g cm^-3 ), high strength (≈292 MPa), toughness (≈6.4 MPa m^1/2 ), surface hardness (≈1144 kgf mm^-2 ) and impact-resistance, surpassing the overall performance of engineering alumina. This material-independent approach paves the way for designing advanced bioinspired heterogeneous materials for diverse structural and functional applications.

Bioinspired Impact-Resistant and Self-Monitoring Nanofibrous Composites

Lightweight and impact-resistant materials with self-monitoring capability are highly desired for protective applications, but are challenging to be artificially fabricated. Herein, a scalable-manufactured aramid nanofiber (ANF)-based composite combining these key properties is presented. Inspired by the strengthening and toughening mechanisms relying on recoverable interfaces commonly existing in biological composites, mechanically weak but dense hydrogen bonds are introduced into the ANF interfaces to achieve simultaneously enhanced tensile strength (300 MPa), toughness (55 MJ m^-3 ), and impact resistance of the nanofibrous composite. The achieved mechanical property combination displays attractive advantages compared with that of most of previously reported nanocomposites. Additionally, the nanofibrous composite is designed with a capability for real-time self-monitoring of its structural safety during both quasi-static tensile and dynamic impact processes, based on the strain/damage-induced resistance variations of a conductive nanowire network inside it. These comprehensive properties enable the present nanofibrous composite with promising potential for protective applications.

Anomalous inapplicability of nacre-like architectures as impact-resistant templates in a wide range of impact velocities

Nacre is generally regarded as tough body armor, but it was often smashed by predators with a certain striking speed. Nacre-like architectures have been demonstrated to dissipate abundant energy by tablets sliding at static or specific low-speed loads, but whether they're still impact-resistant templates in a wide range of impact velocities remains unclear. Here, we find an anomalous phenomenon that nacre-like structures show superior energy-dissipation ability only in a narrow range of low impact velocities, while they exhibit lower impact resistance than laminated structures when impact velocity exceeds a critical value. This is because the tablets sliding in nacre-like structure occurs earlier and wider at low impact velocities, while it becomes localized at excessive impact velocities. Such anomalous phenomenon remains under different structural sizes and boundary conditions. It further inspires us to propose a hybrid architecture design strategy that achieves optimal impact resistance in a wide range of impact velocities.

Matrix-Directed Mineralization for Bulk Structural Materials

Mineral-based bulk structural materials (MBSMs) are known for their long history and extensive range of usage. The inherent brittleness of minerals poses a major problem to the performance of MBSMs. To overcome this problem, design principles have been extracted from natural biominerals, in which the extraordinary mechanical performance is achieved via the hierarchical organization of minerals and organics. Nevertheless, precise and efficient fabrication of MBSMs with bioinspired hierarchical structures under mild conditions has long been a big challenge. This Perspective provides a panoramic view of an emerging fabrication strategy, matrix-directed mineralization, which imitates the in vivo growth of some biominerals. The advantages of the strategy are revealed by comparatively analyzing the conventional fabrication techniques of artificial hierarchically structured MBSMs and the biomineral growth processes. By introducing recent advances, we demonstrate that this strategy can be used to fabricate artificial MBSMs with hierarchical structures. Particular attention is paid to the mass transport and the precursors that are involved in the mineralization process. We hope this Perspective can provide some inspiring viewpoints on the importance of biomimetic mineralization in material fabrication and thereby spur the biomimetic fabrication of high-performance MBSMs.

Tough, aorta-inspired soft composites

Spatial variations in fiber alignment (and, therefore, in mechanical anisotropy) play a central role in the excellent toughness and fatigue characteristics of many biological materials. In this work, we examine the effect of fiber alignment in soft composites, including both "in-plane" and "out-of-plane" fiber arrangements. We take inspiration from the spatial variations of fiber alignment found in the aorta to three-dimensionally (3D) print soft, tough silicone composites with an excellent combination of stiffness, toughness, and fatigue threshold, regardless of the direction of loading. These aorta-inspired composites exhibit mechanical properties comparable to skin, with excellent combinations of stiffness and toughness not previously observed in synthetic soft materials.

Gelation-Assisted Assembly of Large-Area, Highly Aligned, and Environmentally Stable MXene Films with an Excellent Trade-Off between Mechanical and Electrical Properties

Layered MXene films have shown enormous potential for wide applications due to their high electrical conductivity and unique laminated microstructure. However, the intrinsic susceptibility to oxidation and the mechanical fragility of MXene films are the two major bottlenecks that prevent their widespread industrial applications. Here, a facile yet efficient assembly strategy is proposed to address these issues by increasing the alignment and compactness of MXene layers as well as strengthening the interlayer interactions. This method involves the gelation of MXene flakes with a multifunctional inorganic "mortar" polymer (ammonium polyphosphate, APP) followed by quasi-solid-state assembly enabled by a mechanical rolling process, by which the 3D gel network is transformed into 2D freestanding MXene films with unprecedented flake alignment and compactness. Besides, due to the multiple molecular-level interactions (hydrogen bonding, coordination bonding, and electrostatic force) between APP and MXene flakes, the resultant MXene-APP film (MAF) displays high mechanical strength (286.4 ± 20.3 MPa) and excellent electrical conductivity (8012.4 ± 325.6 S cm^-1 ), along with remarkable environmental stability. As an application demonstration, MAF exhibits outstanding electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness with long-term durability, highlighting the great potential of this gelation-assisted assembly strategy in fabricating large-area, high-performance MXene films for diverse real-world applications.

Advancing the Mechanical Performance of Glasses: Perspectives and Challenges

Glasses are materials that lack a crystalline microstructure and long-range atomic order. Instead, they feature heterogeneity and disorder on superstructural scales, which have profound consequences for their elastic response, material strength, fracture toughness, and the characteristics of dynamic fracture. These structure-property relations present a rich field of study in fundamental glass physics and are also becoming increasingly important in the design of modern materials with improved mechanical performance. A first step in this direction involves glass-like materials that retain optical transparency and the haptics of classical glass products, while overcoming the limitations of brittleness. Among these, novel types of oxide glasses, hybrid glasses, phase-separated glasses, and bioinspired glass-polymer composites hold significant promise. Such materials are designed from the bottom-up, building on structure-property relations, modeling of stresses and strains at relevant length scales, and machine learning predictions. Their fabrication requires a more scientifically driven approach to materials design and processing, building on the physics of structural disorder and its consequences for structural rearrangements, defect initiation, and dynamic fracture in response to mechanical load. In this article, a perspective is provided on this highly interdisciplinary field of research in terms of its most recent challenges and opportunities.
