Bio-Informed Porous Mineral-Based Composites

Certain biominerals, such as sea sponges and echinoderm skeletons, display a fascinating combination of mechanical properties and adaptability due to the well-defined structures spanning various length scales. These materials often possess high density normalized mechanical properties because they contain well-defined pores. The density-normalized mechanical properties of synthetic minerals are often inferior because the pores are stochastically distributed, resulting in an inhomogeneous stress distribution. The mechanical properties of synthetic materials are limited by the degree of structural and compositional control currently available fabrication methods offer. In the first part of this review, examples of structural elements nature uses to impart exceptional density normalized Young's moduli to its porous biominerals are showcased. The second part highlights recent advancements in the fabrication of bio-informed mineral-based composites possessing pores with diameters that span a wide range of length scales. The influence of the processing of mineral-based composites on their structures and mechanical properties is summarized. Thereby, it is aimed at encouraging further research directed to the sustainable, energy-efficient fabrication of synthetic lightweight yet stiff mineral-based composites.

Structural Functions of 3D-Printed Polymer Scaffolds in Regulating Cell Fates and Behaviors for Repairing Bone and Nerve Injuries

Tissue repair and regeneration, such as bone and nerve restoration, face significant challenges due to strict regulations within the immune microenvironment, stem cell differentiation, and key cell behaviors. The development of 3D scaffolds is identified as a promising approach to address these issues via the efficiently structural regulations on cell fates and behaviors. In particular, 3D-printed polymer scaffolds with diverse micro-/nanostructures offer a great potential for mimicking the structures of tissue. Consequently, they are foreseen as promissing pathways for regulating cell fates, including cell phenotype, differentiation of stem cells, as well as the migration and the proliferation of key cells, thereby facilitating tissue repairs and regenerations. Herein, the roles of structural functions of 3D-printed polymer scaffolds in regulating the fates and behaviors of numerous cells related to tissue repair and regeneration, along with their specific influences are highlighted. Additionally, the challenges and outlooks associated with 3D-printed polymer scaffolds with various structures for modulating cell fates are also discussed.

Enhanced elastic stability of a topologically disordered crystalline metal-organic framework

By virtue of their open network structures and low densities, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are soft materials that exhibit elastic instabilities at low applied stresses. The conventional strategy for improving elastic stability is to increase the connectivity of the underlying MOF network, which necessarily increases the material density and reduces the porosity. Here we demonstrate an alternative paradigm, whereby elastic stability is enhanced in a MOF with an aperiodic network topology. We use a combination of variable-pressure single-crystal X-ray diffraction measurements and coarse-grained lattice-dynamical calculations to interrogate the high-pressure behaviour of the topologically aperiodic system TRUMOF-1, which we compare against that of its ordered congener MOF-5. We show that the topology of the former quenches the elastic instability responsible for pressure-induced framework collapse in the latter, much as irregularity in the shapes and sizes of stones acts to prevent cooperative mechanical failure in drystone walls. Our results establish aperiodicity as a counter-intuitive design motif in engineering the mechanical properties of framework structures that is relevant to MOFs and larger-scale architectures alike.

Damage-programmable design of metamaterials achieving crack-resisting mechanisms seen in nature

The fracture behaviour of artificial metamaterials often leads to catastrophic failures with limited resistance to crack propagation. In contrast, natural materials such as bones and ceramics possess microstructures that give rise to spatially controllable crack path and toughened material resistance to crack advances. This study presents an approach that is inspired by nature's strengthening mechanisms to develop a systematic design method enabling damage-programmable metamaterials with engineerable microfibers in the cells that can spatially program the micro-scale crack behaviour. Machine learning is applied to provide an effective design engine that accelerate the generation of damage-programmable cells that offer advanced toughening functionality such as crack bowing, crack deflection, and shielding seen in natural materials; and are optimised for a given programming of crack path. This paper shows that such toughening features effectively enable crack-resisting mechanisms on the basis of the crack tip interactions, crack shielding, crack bridging and synergistic combinations of these mechanisms, increasing up to 1,235% absorbed fracture energy in comparison to conventional metamaterials. The proposed approach can have broad implications in the design of damage-tolerant materials, and lightweight engineering systems where significant fracture resistances or highly programmable damages for high performances are sought after.

Constructing Multifunctional Composite Single Crystals via Polymer Gel Incorporation

The non-uniformity of a single crystal can sometimes be found in biominerals, where surrounding biomacromolecules are incorporated into the growing crystals. This unique composite structure, combining heterogeneity and long-range ordering, enables the functionalization of single crystals. Polymer gel media are often used to prepare composite single crystals, in which the growing crystals incorporate gel networks and form a bi-continuous interpenetrating structure without any disruption to single crystallinity. Moreover, dyes and many kinds of nanoparticles can be occluded into single crystals under the guidance of gel incorporation. On this basis, the bio-inspired method has been applied in crystal morphology control, crystal dyeing, mechanical reinforcement, and organic bulk heterojunction-based optoelectronics. In this paper, the composite structure, the incorporation mechanisms, and the multiple functions of gel-incorporated single crystals are reviewed.

Research Progress on Starfish Outbreaks and Their Prevention and Utilization: Lessons from Northern China

Starfish are keystone species as predators in benthic ecosystems, but when population outbreaks occur, this can have devastating consequences ecologically. Furthermore, starfish outbreaks and invasions can have adverse impact economically by impacting shellfish aquaculture. For example, an infestation of starfish in Qingdao led to a 50% reduction in sea cucumber production and an 80% reduction in scallop production, resulting in an economic loss of approximately RMB 100 million to oyster and other shellfish industries. Addressing the imperative need to proactively mitigate starfish invasions requires comprehensive research on their behavior and the underlying mechanisms of outbreaks. This review scrutinizes the historical patterns of outbreaks among diverse starfish species across various regions, delineates the factors contributing to the proliferation of Asterias amurensis in Chinese waters, articulates preventive and remedial strategies, and outlines the potential for the sustainable utilization of starfish.

A Versatile Synthesis Platform Based on Polymer Cubosomes for a Library of Highly Ordered Nanoporous Metal Oxides Particles

Polymer cubosomes (PCs) have well-defined inverse bicontinuous cubic mesophases formed by amphiphilic block copolymer bilayers. The open hydrophilic channels, large periods, and robust physical properties of PCs are advantageous to many host-guest interactions and yet not fully exploited, especially in the fields of functional nanomaterials. Here, the self-assembly of poly(ethylene oxide)-block-polystyrene block copolymers is systematically investigated and a series of robust PCs is developed via a cosolvent method. Ordered nanoporous metal oxide particles are obtained by selectively filling the hydrophilic channels of PCs via an impregnation strategy, followed by a two-step thermal treatment. Based on this versatile PC platform, the general synthesis of a library of ordered porous particles with different pore structures3 ¯ $\bar{3}$ 3 ¯ $\bar{3}$ , tunable large pore size (18-78 nm), high specific surface areas (up to 123.3 m2 g-1 for WO3) and diverse framework compositions, such as transition and non-transition metal oxides, rare earth chloride oxides, perovskite, pyrochlore, and high-entropy metal oxides is demonstrated. As typical materials obtained via this method, ordered porous WO3 particles have the advantages of open continuous structure and semiconducting properties, thus showing superior gas sensing performances toward hydrogen sulfide.

A biogenic geodesic dome of the silica skeleton in Phaeodaria

Unique architectures of microbial skeletons are viewed as a model for the architectural design of artificial structural materials. In particular, the specific geometric arrangement of a spherical skeleton 0.5-1.5 mm in diameter of shell-bearing protists, Phaeodaria (Aulosphaera sp.), is remarkably interesting because of its similarity to a geodesic polyhedron, which is a hollow framework with 6-branched nodes that requires minimal building material for maximal strength. A phaeodarian skeleton composed of silica rods 5-10 µm in diameter was characterized as a distorted dome that is based on an icosahedron sectioned with a 7-frequency subdivision. The major difference of the biogenic architecture from the ideal geodesic dome is the coexistence of 7- and 5-branched nodes with the distortion of the frames and the presence of radial spines. From a microscopic perspective, the frames and radial spines were revealed to be hollow tubes having inner fibers and lamellar walls consisting of silica nanoparticles 4-8 nm in diameter with interlayer organic matter. The high degradability of the silica skeleton in seawater after cell mortality is ascribed to the specific nanometric composite structure. The biological architectonics sheds light on the production of environmentally friendly, lightweight structural materials and microdevices.

A bioinspired surface tension-driven route toward programmed cellular ceramics

The intriguing biomineralization process in nature endows the mineralized biological materials with intricate microarchitected structures in a facile and orderly way, which provides an inspiration for processing ceramics. Here, we propose a simple and efficient manufacturing process to fabricate cellular ceramics in programmed cell-based 3D configurations, inspired by the biomineralization process of the diatom frustule. Our approach separates the ingredient synthesis from architecture building, enabling the programmable manufacturing of cellular ceramics with various cell sizes, geometries, densities, metastructures, and constituent elements. Our approach exploits surface tension to capture precursor solutions in the architected cellular lattices, allowing us to control the liquid geometry and manufacture cellular ceramics with high precision. We investigate the geometry parameters for the architected lattices assembled by unit cells and unit columns, both theoretically and experimentally, to guide the 3D fluid interface creation in arranged configurations. We manufacture a series of globally cellular and locally compact piezoceramics, obtaining an enhanced piezoelectric constant and a designed piezoelectric anisotropy. This bioinspired, surface tension-assisted approach has the potential to revolutionize the design and processing of multifarious ceramic materials for structural and functional applications in energy, electronics and biomedicine.

Toward Ultrahigh Rate and Cycling Performance of Cathode Materials of Sodium Ion Battery by Introducing a Bicontinuous Porous Structure

The emerging sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) are one of the most promising candidates expected to complement lithium-ion batteries and diversify the battery market. However, the exploitation of cathode materials with high-rate performance and long-cycle stability for SIBs has remained one of the major challenges. To this end, an efficient approach to enhance rate and cycling performance by introducing an ordered bicontinuous porous structure into cathode materials of SIBs is demonstrated. Prussian blue analogues (PBAs) are selected because they are recognized as a type of most promising SIB cathode materials. Thanks to the presence of 3D continuous channels enabling fast Na+ ions diffusion as well as the intrinsic mechanical stability of bicontinuous architecture, the resultant PBAs exhibit excellent rate capability (80 mAh g-1 at 2.5 A g-1) and ultralong cycling life (>3000 circulations at 0.5 A g-1), reaching the top performance of the reported PBA-based cathode materials. This study opens a new avenue for boosting sluggish ion diffusion kinetics in electrodes of rechargeable batteries and also provides a new paradigm for solving the dilemma that electrodes' failure due to high-stress concentration upon ion storage.

Mechanical Performance of Copper-Nanocluster-Polymer Nanolattices

A type of copper-nanocluster-polymer composites is reported and showcased that their 3D nanolattices exhibit a superior combination of high strength, toughness, deformability, resilience, and damage-tolerance. Notably, the strength and toughness of ultralight copper-nanocluster-polymer nanolattices in some cases surpass current best performers, including alumina, nickel, and other ceramic or metallic lattices at low densities. Additionally, copper-nanocluster-polymer nanolattices are super-resilient, crack-resistant, and one-step printed under ambient condition which can be easily integrated into sophisticated microsystems as highly effective internal protectors. The findings suggest that, unlike traditional nanocomposites, the laser-induced interface and the high fraction of ultrasmall Cu15 nanoclusters as crosslinking junctions contribute to the marked nonlinear elasticity of copper-nanocluster-polymer network, which synergizes with the lattice-topology effect and culminates in the exceptional mechanical performance.

Bio-Inspired Ultrathin Perfect Absorber for High-Performance Photothermal Conversion

Ultrathin perfect absorber (UPA) enables efficient photothermal conversion (PC) in renewable chemical and energy systems. However, it is challenging so far to obtain efficient absorption with thickness significantly less than the wavelength, especially considering the common view that an ultrathin film can absorb at most 50% of incident light. Here, a highly light-absorbing and mechanically stable UPA is reported by learning from the honeycomb mirror design of the crab compound eyes. With the hollow apertures enclosed by the self-supporting ultrathin film of reduced graphene oxide and gold nanoparticles, the absorber achieves spoof-plasmon enhanced broadband absorption in solar spectrum and low radiative decay in infrared. Specifically, a strong absorption (87%) is realized by the apertures with cross-section thickness of 1/20 of the wavelength, which is 7.3 times stronger than a planar counterpart with the identical material. Its high PC efficiency up to 64%, with hot-electron temperature as high as 2344 K, is also experimentally demonstrated. Utilizing its low thermal mass nature, a high-speed visible-to-infrared converter is constructed. The absorber can enable high-performance PC processes for future interfacial catalysis and photon-detection.

High performance injectable Mg doped bioactive glass bone cement for the regulation of osteogenic immune microenvironment

Although calcium phosphate has been extensively utilized in orthopedic applications such as spine, limbs, dentistry, and maxillofacial surgery, the lack of osteoinductive properties often hinders its effectiveness in treating bone defects resulting from pathological micro-environment such as tumor surgery, osteoporosis, osteomyelitis, and diabetic. Therefore, a novel bone cement based on magnesium-doped bioactive glass was developed in this study. The moderate release of magnesium ions improved the mechanical properties by controlling the crystal size of hydroxyapatite. Through detailed discussion of element content and heat treatment temperature, it was found that 2Mg-BG-800 was suitable for the construction of bone cement. 2Mg-BG-BC exhibited favorable initial (15 min) and final (30 min) setting time, compressive strength (29.45 MPa), compressive modulus (1851.49 MPa), injectability, and shape-adaptability. Furthermore, Mg-BG-BC demonstrated the ability to enhance the osteogenic differentiation of BMSCs, and induce macrophage polarization towards the M2 phenotype, suggesting its potential for osteoporotic fracture regeneration.

A Triply-Periodic-Minimal-Surface Structured Interphase based on Fluorinated Polymers Strengthening High-energy Lithium Metal Batteries

The challenge of constructing a mechanically robust yet lightweight artificial solid-electrolyte interphase layer on lithium (Li) anodes highlights a trade-off between high battery safety and high energy density. Inspired by the intricate microstructure of the white sea urchin, we first develop a polyvinyl fluoride-hexafluoropropylene (PVDF-HFP) interfacial layer with a triple periodic minimal surface structure (TPMS) that could offer maximal modulus with minimal weight. This design endows high mechanical strength to an ordered porous structure, effectively reduces local current density, polarization, and internal resistance, and stabilizes the anode interface. At a low N/P ratio of ~3, using LiFePO4 as the cathode, Li anodes protected by TPMS-structured PVDF-HFP achieve an extremely low capacity-fading-rate of approximately 0.002 % per cycle over 200 cycles at 1 C, with an average discharge capacity of 142 mAh g-1. Meanwhile, the TPMS porous structure saves 50 wt % of the interfacial layer mass, thereby enhancing the energy density of the battery. The TPMS structure is conducive to large-scale additive manufacturing, which will provide a reference for the future development of lightweight, high-energy-density secondary batteries.

Composite material in the sea urchin Cidaris rugosa: ordered and disordered micrometre-scale bicontinuous geometries

The sponge-like biomineralized calcite materials found in echinoderm skeletons are of interest in terms of both structure formation and biological function. Despite their crystalline atomic structure, they exhibit curved interfaces that have been related to known triply periodic minimal surfaces. Here, we investigate the endoskeleton of the sea urchin Cidaris rugosa that has long been known to form a microstructure related to the Primitive surface. Using X-ray tomography, we find that the endoskeleton is organized as a composite material consisting of domains of bicontinuous microstructures with different structural properties. We describe, for the first time, the co-occurrence of ordered single Primitive and single Diamond structures and of a disordered structure within a single skeletal plate. We show that these structures can be distinguished by structural properties including solid volume fraction, trabeculae width and, to a lesser extent, interface area and mean curvature. In doing so, we present a robust method that extracts interface areas and curvature integrals from voxelized datasets using the Steiner polynomial for parallel body volumes. We discuss these very large-scale bicontinuous structures in the context of their function, formation and evolution.

Light-controlled morphological development of self-organizing bioinspired nanocomposites

Nature's intricate biominerals inspire fundamental questions on self-organization and guide innovations towards functional materials. While advances in synthetic self-organization have enabled many levels of control, generating complex shapes remains difficult. Specifically, controlling morphologies during formation at the single micro/nanostructure level is the key challenge. Here, we steer the self-organization of barium carbonate nanocrystals and amorphous silica into complex nanocomposite morphologies by photogeneration of carbon dioxide (CO2) under ultraviolet (UV) light. Using modulations in the UV light intensity, we select the growth mode of the self-organization process inwards or outwards to form helical and coral-like morphologies respectively. The spatiotemporal control over CO2 photogeneration allows formation of different morphologies on pre-assigned locations, switching between different growth modes-to form for instance a coral on top of a helix or vice versa, and subtle sculpting and patterning of the nanocomposites during formation. These findings advance the understanding of these versatile self-organization processes and offer new prospects for tailored designs of functional materials using photochemically driven self-organization.

Protein-activated atomic layer deposition for robust crude-oil-repellent hierarchical nano-armored membranes

Atomic layer deposition (ALD) offers unique capabilities to fabricate atomically engineered porous materials with precise pore tuning and multi-functionalization for diverse applications like advanced membrane separations towards sustainable energy-water systems. However, current ALD technique is inhibited on most non-polar polymeric membranes due to lack of accessible nucleation sites. Here, we report a facile method to efficiently promote ALD coating on hydrophobic surface of polymeric membranes via novel protein activation/sensitization. As a proof of concept, TiO2 ALD-coated membranes activated by bovine serum albumin exhibit remarkable superhydrophilicity, ultralow underwater crude oil adhesion, and robust tolerance to rigorous environments including acid, alkali, saline, and ethanol. Most importantly, excellent cyclable crude oil-in-water emulsion separation performance can be achieved. The mechanism for activation/sensitization is rooted in reactivity for a particular set of amino acids. Furthermore, the universality of protein-sensitized ALD is demonstrated using common egg white, promising numerous potential usages in biomedical engineering, environmental remediation, low-carbon manufacturing, catalysis, and beyond.

Advances in 3D Printing of Highly Bioadaptive Bone Tissue Engineering Scaffolds

The number of patients with bone defects caused by trauma, bone tumors, and osteoporosis has increased considerably. The repair of irregular, recurring, and large bone defects poses a great challenge to clinicians. Bone tissue engineering is emerging as an appropriate strategy to replace autologous bone grafting in the repair of critically sized bone defects. However, the suitability of bone tissue engineering scaffolds in terms of structure, mechanics, degradation, and the microenvironment is inadequate. Three-dimensional (3D) printing is an advanced additive-manufacturing technology widely used for bone repair. 3D printing constructs personalized structurally adapted scaffolds based on 3D models reconstructed from CT images. The contradiction between the mechanics and degradation is resolved by altering the stacking structure. The local microenvironment of the implant is improved by designing an internal pore structure and a spatiotemporal factor release system. Therefore, there has been a boom in the 3D printing of personalized bone repair scaffolds. In this review, successful research on the preparation of highly bioadaptive bone tissue engineering scaffolds using 3D printing is presented. The mechanisms of structural, mechanical, degradation, and microenvironmental adaptations of bone prostheses and their interactions were elucidated to provide a feasible strategy for constructing highly bioadaptive bone tissue engineering scaffolds.

Transport-Limited Growth of Coccolith Crystals

Biogenic crystals present a variety of complex morphologies that form with exquisite fidelity. In the case of the intricate morphologies of coccoliths, calcite crystals produced by marine algae, only a single set of crystallographic facets is utilized. It is unclear which growth process can merge this simple crystallographic habit with the species-specific architectures. Here, a suite of state-of-the-art electron microscopies is used to follow both the growth trajectories of the crystals ex situ, and the cellular environment in situ, in the species Emiliania huxleyi. It is shown that crystal growth alternates between a space filling and a skeletonized growth mode, where the crystals elongate via their stable crystallographic facets, but the final morphology is a manifestation of growth arrest. This process is reminiscent of the balance between reaction-limited and transport-limited growth regimes underlying snowflake formation. It is suggested that localized ion transport regulates the kinetic instabilities that are required for transport-limited growth, leading to reproducible morphologies.

Light-driven nucleation, growth, and patterning of biorelevant crystals using resonant near-infrared laser heating

Spatiotemporal control over crystal nucleation and growth is of fundamental interest for understanding how organisms assemble high-performance biominerals, and holds relevance for manufacturing of functional materials. Many methods have been developed towards static or global control, however gaining simultaneously dynamic and local control over crystallization remains challenging. Here, we show spatiotemporal control over crystallization of retrograde (inverse) soluble compounds induced by locally heating water using near-infrared (NIR) laser light. We modulate the NIR light intensity to start, steer, and stop crystallization of calcium carbonate and laser-write with micrometer precision. Tailoring the crystallization conditions overcomes the inherently stochastic crystallization behavior and enables positioning single crystals of vaterite, calcite, and aragonite. We demonstrate straightforward extension of these principles toward other biorelevant compounds by patterning barium-, strontium-, and calcium carbonate, as well as strontium sulfate and calcium phosphate. Since many important compounds exhibit retrograde solubility behavior, NIR-induced heating may enable light-controlled crystallization with precise spatiotemporal control.

Starfish-Inspired Diamond-Structured Calcite Single Crystals from a Bottom-up Approach as Mechanical Metamaterials

Inspired by knobby starfish, this work demonstrates a bottom-up approach for fabricating a calcite single-crystal (CSC) with a diamond structure by exploiting the self-assembly of the block copolymer and corresponding templated synthesis. Similar to the knobby starfish, the diamond structure of the CSC gives rise to a brittle-to-ductile transition. Most interestingly, the diamond-structured CSC fabricated exhibits exceptional specific energy absorption and strength with lightweight character superior to natural materials and artificial counterparts from a top-down approach due to the nanosized effect. This approach provides the feasibility for creating mechanical metamaterials with the combined effects of the topology and nanosize on the mechanical performance.

Multi-Functionalization of Single crystals Mediated by Gel-Incorporation: A Bioinspired Strategy

Biominerals are inherently organic-inorganic crystal composites. Drawing inspiration from this biomineral structure, functionalized single crystals can be synthesized using the gel-grown method, resulting in the incorporation of gel-networks into the host crystals. By incorporating gel-networks, diverse guest materials, such as nanoparticles and dye molecules, can be uniformly and isotropically distributed within the crystals, thereby imparting non-intrinsic optical or magnetic properties to the host crystals. Additionally, gel-incorporation enhances the toughness and stability of the crystals as the incorporated gel-fibers and accompanying guest materials act as bridges to prevent crack propagation. Furthermore, gel-incorporation enables protein crystals to exhibit self-healing properties, which can be attributed to the dynamic bonding interaction between gel-networks and crystals. Notably, recent research has demonstrated that the incorporation of zwitterionic gel-networks enhances the charge effects on crystal morphology evolution as the charged groups become bound to the developing crystal surfaces, and their detachment is impeded by the interconnected gel-networks. Therefore, preparing single crystals with gel-incorporation is a remarkable strategy for synthesizing functionalized crystal materials.

Mean-shift exploration in shape assembly of robot swarms

The fascinating collective behaviors of biological systems have inspired extensive studies on shape assembly of robot swarms. Here, we propose a strategy for shape assembly of robot swarms based on the idea of mean-shift exploration: when a robot is surrounded by neighboring robots and unoccupied locations, it would actively give up its current location by exploring the highest density of nearby unoccupied locations in the desired shape. This idea is realized by adapting the mean-shift algorithm, which is an optimization technique widely used in machine learning for locating the maxima of a density function. The proposed strategy empowers robot swarms to assemble highly complex shapes with strong adaptability, as verified by experiments with swarms of 50 ground robots. The comparison between the proposed strategy and the state-of-the-art demonstrates its high efficiency especially for large-scale swarms. The proposed strategy can also be adapted to generate interesting behaviors including shape regeneration, cooperative cargo transportation, and complex environment exploration.

Bioprocess inspired formation of calcite mesocrystals by cation-mediated particle attachment mechanism

Calcite mesocrystals were proposed, and have been widely reported, to form in the presence of polymer additives via oriented assembly of nanoparticles. However, the formation mechanism and the role of polymer additives remain elusive. Here, inspired by the biomineralization process of sea urchin spine comprising magnesium calcite mesocrystals, we show that calcite mesocrystals could also be obtained via attachment of amorphous calcium carbonate (ACC) nanoparticles in the presence of inorganic zinc ions. Moreover, we demonstrate that zinc ions can induce the formation of temporarily stabilized amorphous nanoparticles of less than 20 nm at a significantly lower calcium carbonate concentration as compared to pure solution, which is energetically beneficial for the attachment and occlusion during calcite growth. The cation-mediated particle attachment crystallization significantly improves our understanding of mesocrystal formation mechanisms in biomineralization and offers new opportunities to bioprocess inspired inorganic ions regulated materials fabrication.

A Devonian crinoid with a diamond microlattice

Owing to their remarkable physical properties, cellular structures, such as triply periodic minimal surfaces (TPMS), have multidisciplinary and multifunctional applications. Although these structures are observed in nature, examples of TPMS with large length scales in living organisms are exceedingly rare. Recently, microstructure reminiscent of the diamond-type TPMS was documented in the skeleton of the modern knobby starfish Protoreaster nodosus. Here we report a similar microlattice in a 385 Myr old crinoid Haplocrinites, which pushes back the origins of this highly ordered microstructure in echinoderms into the Devonian. Despite the low Mg2+/Ca2+ ratio of the 'calcite' Devonian sea, the skeleton of these crinoids has high-Mg content, which indicates strong biological control over biomineralogy. We suggest that such an optimization of trabecular arrangement additionally enriched in magnesium, which enhances the mechanical properties, might have evolved in these crinoids in response to increased predation pressure during the Middle Palaeozoic Marine Revolution. This discovery illustrates the remarkable ability of echinoderms, through the process of evolutionary optimization, to form a lightweight, stiff and damage-tolerant skeleton, which serves as an inspiration for biomimetic materials.

A Molecular-Scale Understanding of Misorientation Toughening in Corals and Seashells

Biominerals are organic-mineral composites formed by living organisms. They are the hardest and toughest tissues in those organisms, are often polycrystalline, and their mesostructure (which includes nano- and microscale crystallite size, shape, arrangement, and orientation) can vary dramatically. Marine biominerals may be aragonite, vaterite, or calcite, all calcium carbonate (CaCO₃ ) polymorphs, differing in crystal structure. Unexpectedly, diverse CaCO₃ biominerals such as coral skeletons and nacre share a similar characteristic: Adjacent crystals are slightly misoriented. This observation is documented quantitatively at the micro- and nanoscales, using polarization-dependent imaging contrast mapping (PIC mapping), and the slight misorientations is consistently between 1° and 40°. Nanoindentation shows that both polycrystalline biominerals and abiotic synthetic spherulites are tougher than single-crystalline geologic aragonite, and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of bicrystals at the molecular scale reveals that aragonite, vaterite, and calcite exhibit toughness maxima when the bicrystals are misoriented by 10°, 20°, and 30°, respectively, demonstrating that slight misorientation alone can increase fracture toughness. Slight-misorientation-toughening can be harnessed for synthesis of bioinspired materials that only require one material, are not limited to specific top-down architecture, and are easily achieved by self-assembly of organic molecules (e.g., aspirin, chocolate), polymers, metals, and ceramics well beyond biominerals.

Morphological Evolution of Calcite Grown in Zwitterionic Hydrogels: Charge Effects Enhanced by Gel-Incorporation

The incorporation of charged biomacromolecules is widely found in biomineralization. To investigate the significance of this biological strategy for mineralization control, gelatin-incorporated calcite crystals grown from gelatin hydrogels with different charge concentrations along the gel networks are examined. It is found that the bound charged groups on gelatin networks (amino cations, gelatin-NH₃ ⁺ and carboxylic anions, gelatin-COO^- ) play crucial roles in controlling the single-crystallinity and the crystal morphology. And the charge effects are greatly enhanced by the gel-incorporation because the incorporated gel networks force the bound charged groups on them to attach to crystallization fronts. In contrast, ammonium ions (NH₄ ⁺ ) and acetate ions (Ac^- ) dissolve in the crystallization media do not exhibit the similar charge effects because the balance of attachment/detachment make them more difficult to be incorporated. Employing the revealed charge effects, the calcite crystal composites with different morphologies can be flexibly prepared.

Macromolecular sheets direct the morphology and orientation of plate-like biogenic guanine crystals

Animals precisely control the morphology and assembly of guanine crystals to produce diverse optical phenomena in coloration and vision. However, little is known about how organisms regulate crystallization to produce optically useful morphologies which express highly reflective crystal faces. Guanine crystals form inside iridosome vesicles within chromatophore cells called iridophores. By following iridosome formation in developing scallop eyes, we show that pre-assembled, fibrillar sheets provide an interface for nucleation and direct the orientation of the guanine crystals. The macromolecular sheets cap the (100) faces of immature guanine crystals, inhibiting growth along the π-stacking growth direction. Crystal growth then occurs preferentially along the sheets to generate highly reflective plates. Despite their different physical properties, the morphogenesis of iridosomes bears a striking resemblance to melanosome morphogenesis in vertebrates, where amyloid sheets template melanin deposition. The common control mechanisms for melanin and guanine formation inspire new approaches for manipulating the morphologies and properties of molecular materials.

Tooth Diversity Underpins Future Biomimetic Replications

Although the evolution of tooth structure seems highly conserved, remarkable diversity exists among species due to different living environments and survival requirements. Along with the conservation, this diversity of evolution allows for the optimized structures and functions of teeth under various service conditions, providing valuable resources for the rational design of biomimetic materials. In this review, we survey the current knowledge about teeth from representative mammals and aquatic animals, including human teeth, herbivore and carnivore teeth, shark teeth, calcite teeth in sea urchins, magnetite teeth in chitons, and transparent teeth in dragonfish, to name a few. The highlight of tooth diversity in terms of compositions, structures, properties, and functions may stimulate further efforts in the synthesis of tooth-inspired materials with enhanced mechanical performance and broader property sets. The state-of-the-art syntheses of enamel mimetics and their properties are briefly covered. We envision that future development in this field will need to take the advantage of both conservation and diversity of teeth. Our own view on the opportunities and key challenges in this pathway is presented with a focus on the hierarchical and gradient structures, multifunctional design, and precise and scalable synthesis.

Induced Circular Dichroism and Circularly Polarized Luminescence for Block Copolymers with Chiral Communications

Many sophisticated chiral materials are found in living organisms, giving specific functions and required complexity. Owing to the remarkable optical properties of chiral materials, they have drawn significant attention for the development of synthetic materials to give optical activities for appealing applications. In contrast to a top-down approach, the bottom-up approach from self-assembled systems with chiral host-achiral guest and achiral guest-chiral host for induced circular dichroism and induced circularly polarized luminescence has greatly emerged because of its cost-effective advantage with easy fabrication for mesoscale assembly. Self-assembled hierarchical textures with chiral sense indeed give significant amplification of the dissymmetry factors of absorption and luminescence (g_abs and g_lum ), resulting from the formation of well-ordered superstructures and phases with the building of chromophores and luminophores. By taking advantage of the microphase separation of block copolymers via self-assembly, a variety of well-defined chiral nanostructures can be formed as tertiary superstructures that can be further extended to quaternary phases in bulk or thin film. In this article, a conceptual perspective is presented to utilize the self-assembly of chiral block copolymers with chiral communications, giving quaternary phases with well-ordered textures at the nanoscale for significant enhancement of dissymmetry factors.

Anomalous inapplicability of nacre-like architectures as impact-resistant templates in a wide range of impact velocities

Nacre is generally regarded as tough body armor, but it was often smashed by predators with a certain striking speed. Nacre-like architectures have been demonstrated to dissipate abundant energy by tablets sliding at static or specific low-speed loads, but whether they're still impact-resistant templates in a wide range of impact velocities remains unclear. Here, we find an anomalous phenomenon that nacre-like structures show superior energy-dissipation ability only in a narrow range of low impact velocities, while they exhibit lower impact resistance than laminated structures when impact velocity exceeds a critical value. This is because the tablets sliding in nacre-like structure occurs earlier and wider at low impact velocities, while it becomes localized at excessive impact velocities. Such anomalous phenomenon remains under different structural sizes and boundary conditions. It further inspires us to propose a hybrid architecture design strategy that achieves optimal impact resistance in a wide range of impact velocities.

Intermediate Valence Ion-Mediated Electrodeposition Process

The assembly of biomolecules and ions (e.g., biomineralization process) generates many intricate structures in nature. However, human beings' control over the assembly processes of ions is in its infant stage compared with nature. Here, it is reported that the intermediate valence metal ions in the electrolyte can influence the growth speed of certain crystal facets and in turn adjust the shape of the electrodeposits created by anodic electrodeposition. This is because the intermediate valence metal ions (e.g., Pb²⁺ , Mn²⁺ , etc.) can be oxidized by the electrochemically oxidized high valence ions (e.g., Ag²⁺ and Ag³⁺ ). Therefore, the concentration of the electrochemically oxidized high valence ions can be controlled by the intermediate valence ions, affecting the growth kinetics of the electrodeposits. Taking the anodic electrodeposition of Ag₇ O₈ NO₃ as an example, the role of intermediate valence ions in tailoring the shape of the Ag₇ O₈ NO₃ electrodeposits is demonstrated. Moreover, the growth location of the second-order structure can be controlled by the intermediate valence metal ions. Additionally, the designed complex microarchitectures starting from certain crystal facets to form hollow nanoframes can be selectively etched. The control capability over the electrochemical assembly process of metal ions is significantly strengthened by introducing intermediate valence ions into the electrolyte.

Matrix-Directed Mineralization for Bulk Structural Materials

Mineral-based bulk structural materials (MBSMs) are known for their long history and extensive range of usage. The inherent brittleness of minerals poses a major problem to the performance of MBSMs. To overcome this problem, design principles have been extracted from natural biominerals, in which the extraordinary mechanical performance is achieved via the hierarchical organization of minerals and organics. Nevertheless, precise and efficient fabrication of MBSMs with bioinspired hierarchical structures under mild conditions has long been a big challenge. This Perspective provides a panoramic view of an emerging fabrication strategy, matrix-directed mineralization, which imitates the in vivo growth of some biominerals. The advantages of the strategy are revealed by comparatively analyzing the conventional fabrication techniques of artificial hierarchically structured MBSMs and the biomineral growth processes. By introducing recent advances, we demonstrate that this strategy can be used to fabricate artificial MBSMs with hierarchical structures. Particular attention is paid to the mass transport and the precursors that are involved in the mineralization process. We hope this Perspective can provide some inspiring viewpoints on the importance of biomimetic mineralization in material fabrication and thereby spur the biomimetic fabrication of high-performance MBSMs.

Three Dimensional Printing of Bioinspired Crossed-Lamellar Metamaterials with Superior Toughness for Syntactic Foam Substitution

Biological materials such as conch shells with crossed-lamellar textures hold impressive mechanical properties due to their capability to realize effective crack control and energy dissipation through the structural synergy of interfacial modulus mismatch and lamellar orientation disparity. Integrating this mechanism with mechanical metamaterial design can not only avoid the catastrophic post-yield stress drop found in traditional architectural materials with uniform lattice structures but also effectively maintain the stress level and improve the energy absorption ability. Herein, a novel bioinspired design strategy that combines regional particularity and overall cyclicity is proposed to innovate the connotation of long-range periodicity inside the metamaterial, in which the node constraint gradient and crossed-lamellar struts corresponding to the core features of conch shells are able to guide the deformation sequence with a self-strengthening response during compression. Detailed in situ experiments and finite element analysis confirm that the rotated broad layer stacking can shorten and impede the shear bands, further transforming the deformation of bioinspired metamaterial into a progressive, hierarchical way, highlighted by the cross-layer hysteresis. Even based on a brittle polymeric resin, excellent specific energy absorption capacity [4544 kJ/kg] has been achieved in this architecture, which far exceeds the reported metal-based syntactic foams for two orders of magnitude. These results offer new opportunities for the bioinspired metamaterials to substitute the widespread syntactic foams in specific applications required for both lightweight and energy absorption.

Exploring the trends of adaptation and evolution of sclerites with regards to habitat depth in sea pens

Octocorals possess sclerites, small elements comprised of calcium carbonate (CaCO₃) that are important diagnostic characters in octocoral taxonomy. Among octocorals, sea pens comprise a unique order (Pennatulacea) that live in a wide range of depths. Habitat depth is considered to be important in the diversification of octocoral species, but a lack of information on sea pens has limited studies on their adaptation and evolution across depth. Here, we aimed to reveal trends of adaptation and evolution of sclerite shapes in sea pens with regards to habitat depth via phylogenetic analyses and ancestral reconstruction analyses. Colony form of sea pens is suggested to have undergone convergent evolution and the loss of axis has occurred independently across the evolution of sea pens. Divergences of sea pen taxa and of sclerite forms are suggested to depend on habitat depths. In addition, their sclerite forms may be related to evolutionary history of the sclerite and the surrounding chemical environment as well as water temperature. Three-flanged sclerites may possess the tolerance towards the environment of the deep sea, while plate sclerites are suggested to be adapted towards shallower waters, and have evolved independently multiple times. The common ancestor form of sea pens was predicted to be deep-sea and similar to family Pseudumbellulidae in form, possessing sclerites intermediate in form to those of alcyonaceans and modern sea pens such as spindles, rods with spines, and three-flanged sclerites with serrated edges sclerites, as well as having an axis and bilateral traits.

Lightweight lattice-based skeleton of the sponge Euplectella aspergillum: On the multifunctional design

The glass sponge, Euplectella aspergillum, possesses a lightweight, silica spicule-based, cylindrical lattice-like skeleton, representing an excellent model system for bioinspired lattices. Previous analysis suggested that the E. aspergillum's skeletal lattice exhibits improved buckling resistance and suppressed vortex shedding. How the sponge's skeletal lattice with diagonally-oriented reinforcing bundle of fused spicules and the ridge system behaves under different loading conditions and achieves dual mechanical and fluidic transport performance requires further investigation. Here, we first quantified the structural descriptors such as length and thickness of the bundles of fused spicules and hole opening diameter of the sponge skeletons with and without the soft tissue covered. Secondly, parametric modeling and simulations of the sponge lattice in comparison with other bioinspired designs under different loading conditions were implemented to obtain the structure-mechanical property relationship. Our results reveal that the double-diagonal reinforcements of the E. aspergillum's lattices show i) tendency to maximize the torsional rigidity in comparison to longitudinal and radial modulus and flexural rigidity, and ii) independency of mechanical properties on the diagonal spacing, leaving freedom to control the hole-opening position for the sponge's fluid transport. Furthermore, our coupled fluid-mechanical simulations suggest that the ridge system spiraling the cylindrical lattice simultaneously improves the radial stiffness and fluid permeability. Finally, we discuss the general mechanical strategies and design flexibility in the sponge's skeletal lattice. Our work provides understanding of the mechanical and functional trade-offs in E. aspergillum's skeletal lattice which may shed light on the design of lightweight tubular lattices.

Imaging Cu2O nanocube hollowing in solution by quantitative in situ X-ray ptychography

Understanding morphological changes of nanoparticles in solution is essential to tailor the functionality of devices used in energy generation and storage. However, we lack experimental methods that can visualize these processes in solution, or in electrolyte, and provide three-dimensional information. Here, we show how X-ray ptychography enables in situ nano-imaging of the formation and hollowing of nanoparticles in solution at 155 °C. We simultaneously image the growth of about 100 nanocubes with a spatial resolution of 66 nm. The quantitative phase images give access to the third dimension, allowing to additionally study particle thickness. We reveal that the substrate hinders their out-of-plane growth, thus the nanocubes are in fact nanocuboids. Moreover, we observe that the reduction of Cu2O to Cu triggers the hollowing of the nanocuboids. We critically assess the interaction of X-rays with the liquid sample. Our method enables detailed in-solution imaging for a wide range of reaction conditions.

Geometrical frustration of phase-separated domains in Coscinodiscus diatom frustules

Diatoms are microalgae with intricate cell walls made of glass. These structures feature micro- and nanoscale hierarchical patterns that cannot be produced with existing synthetic methods. At the same time, manufacturing the cell wall requires little energy and is powered by the sun. Diatoms can thus inspire and inform approaches to sustainable materials processing. Here, we focus on the large-scale organization of micrometer-scale pores in diatom cell walls, which possess an unusual combination of periodicity and radial alignment. While we are not aware of other examples of this organization in nature, it is common in the traditional craft of crochet. Our experiments further show that the competing tendencies of alignment and crystallinity are driven by distinct biological processes.

Diatoms are single-celled organisms with a cell wall made of silica, called the frustule. Even though their elaborate patterns have fascinated scientists for years, little is known about the biological and physical mechanisms underlying their organization. In this work, we take a top-down approach and examine the micrometer-scale organization of diatoms from the Coscinodiscus family. We find two competing tendencies of organization, which appear to be controlled by distinct biological pathways. On one hand, micrometer-scale pores organize locally on a triangular lattice. On the other hand, lattice vectors tend to point globally toward a center of symmetry. This competition results in a frustrated triangular lattice, populated with geometrically necessary defects whose density increases near the center.

Biomineralized Materials as Model Systems for Structural Composites: 3D Architecture

Biomineralized materials are sophisticated material systems with hierarchical 3D material architectures, which are broadly used as model systems for fundamental mechanical, materials science, and biomimetic studies. The current knowledge of the structure of biological materials is mainly based on 2D imaging, which often impedes comprehensive and accurate understanding of the materials' intricate 3D microstructure and consequently their mechanics, functions, and bioinspired designs. The development of 3D techniques such as tomography, additive manufacturing, and 4D testing has opened pathways to study biological materials fully in 3D. This review discusses how applying 3D techniques can provide new insights into biomineralized materials that are either well known or possess complex microstructures that are challenging to understand in the 2D framework. The diverse structures of biomineralized materials are characterized based on four universal structural motifs. Nacre is selected as an example to demonstrate how the progression of knowledge from 2D to 3D can bring substantial improvements to understanding the growth mechanism, biomechanics, and bioinspired designs. State-of-the-art multiscale 3D tomographic techniques are discussed with a focus on their integration with 3D geometric quantification, 4D in situ experiments, and multiscale modeling. Outlook is given on the emerging approaches to investigate the synthesis-structure-function-biomimetics relationship.
