Abstract
The position and cis-trans configuration of C═C bonds in unsaturated lipids significantly affect their biological activities. Simultaneous identification of the position and cis-trans configuration of C═C bonds in unsaturated lipids is important; nonetheless, it still remains a challenging task. Herein, a stereoselective asymmetric reaction was used to recognize cis-trans isomers of the C═C bonds, and the derivatized precursor ions and product ions were subjected to tandem ion mobility-mass spectrometry (IM-MS) analysis. The theoretical calculation revealed that the formation of intramolecular hydrogen bonds after the cyclization reaction amplified the structural difference between diastereomers and increased the separation efficiency in IM. Consequently, a simple, sensitive, and highly selective platform for simultaneous determination of the position and cis-trans configuration of various C═C bonds in unsaturated lipids was established. It was then successfully applied to pinpoint the cis-trans geometry conversion of the located C═C bonds in lipids of the bacterial membrane under environmental stress and track the heterogeneous distribution of unsaturated lipids in rats after spinal cord injury. The present study also offers new insights into the application of IM-MS technology in resolving molecular structures and demonstrates the potential as a platform for a broad range of applications.

Abstract
This scoping review examines environmental impacts related to food production and consumption in Nordic and Baltic countries. The overarching advice to all Nordic and Baltic countries, in line with the current body of scientific literature, is to shift to a more plant-based dietary pattern and avoid food waste. Taking into account current consumption patterns, there is a high potential and necessity to shift food consumption across the countries to minimise its environmental impact. More specifically, a substantial reduction in meat and dairy consumption and increased consumption of legumes/pulses, whole grains, vegetables, fruits, nuts, and seeds are suggested as a priority intervention. Reducing the environmental impacts of seafoods is also key and suggestions include a shift to seafoods with lower environmental impacts such as seaweed and bivalves. As part of the suggested transition to a more plant-based diet, the scope for increasing the provision of plant-based foods through increasing the cultivation of legumes/pulses, vegetables, and grains and through feed-to-food shifts within the region should be explored.

Abstract
Global pollution has exacerbated accumulation of toxicants like methylmercury (MeHg) in seafood. Human exposure to MeHg has been associated with long-term neurodevelopmental delays and impaired cardiovascular health, while many micronutrients in seafood are beneficial to health. The largest MeHg exposure source for many general populations originates from marine fish that are harvested from the global ocean and sold in the commercial seafood market. Here, we use high-resolution catch data for global fisheries and an empirically constrained spatial model for seafood MeHg to examine the spatial origins and magnitudes of MeHg extracted from the ocean. Results suggest that tropical and subtropical fisheries account for >70% of the MeHg extracted from the ocean because they are the major fishing grounds for large pelagic fishes and the natural biogeochemistry in this region facilitates seawater MeHg production. Compounding this issue, micronutrients (selenium and omega-3 fatty acids) are lowest in seafood harvested from warm, low-latitude regions and may be further depleted by future ocean warming. Our results imply that extensive harvests of large pelagic species by industrial fisheries, particularly in the tropics, drive global public health concerns related to MeHg exposure. We estimate that 84 to 99% of subsistence fishing entities globally likely exceed MeHg exposure thresholds based on typical rates of subsistence fish consumption. Results highlight the need for both stringent controls on global pollution and better accounting for human nutrition in fishing choices.

Abstract
Recent global marine lipidomic analysis reveals a strong relationship between ocean temperature and phytoplanktonic abundance of omega-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids, especially eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), which are essential for human nutrition and primarily sourced from phytoplankton in marine food webs. In phytoplanktonic organisms, EPA may play a major role in regulating the phase transition temperature of membranes, while the function of DHA remains unexplored. In the oleaginous diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum, DHA is distributed mainly on extraplastidial phospholipids, which is very different from the EPA enriched in thylakoid lipids. Here, clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats/CRISPR-associated protein 9-mediated knockout of delta-5 elongase (ptELO5a), which encodes a delta-5 elongase (ELO5) catalyzing the elongation of EPA to synthesize DHA, led to a substantial interruption of DHA synthesis in P. tricornutum. The ptELO5a mutants showed some alterations in transcriptome and glycerolipidomes, including membrane lipids and triacylglycerols under normal temperature (22 °C), and were more sensitive to elevated temperature (28 °C) than wild type. We conclude that PtELO5a-mediated synthesis of small amounts of DHA has indispensable functions in regulating membrane lipids, indirectly contributing to storage lipid accumulation, and maintaining thermomorphogenesis in P. tricornutum. This study also highlights the significance of DHA synthesis and lipid composition for environmental adaptation of P. tricornutum.

Abstract
Lipids comprise a significant fraction of sinking organic matter in the ocean and play a crucial role in the carbon cycle. Despite this, our understanding of the processes that control lipid degradation is limited. We combined nanolipidomics and imaging to study the bacterial degradation of diverse algal lipid droplets and found that bacteria isolated from marine particles exhibited distinct dietary preferences, ranging from selective to promiscuous degraders. Dietary preference was associated with a distinct set of lipid degradation genes rather than with taxonomic origin. Using synthetic communities composed of isolates with distinct dietary preferences, we showed that lipid degradation is modulated by microbial interactions. A particle export model incorporating these dynamics indicates that metabolic specialization and community dynamics may influence lipid transport efficiency in the ocean's mesopelagic zone.

Abstract
Plants and algae play a crucial role in the earth's ecosystems. Through photosynthesis they convert light energy into chemical energy, capture CO2 and produce oxygen and energy-rich organic compounds. Photosynthetic organisms are primary producers and synthesize the essential omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids. They have also unique and highly diverse complex lipids, such as glycolipids, phospholipids, triglycerides, sphingolipids and phytosterols, with nutritional and health benefits. Plant and algal lipids are useful in food, feed, nutraceutical, cosmeceutical and pharmaceutical industries but also for green chemistry and bioenergy. The analysis of plant and algal lipidomes represents a significant challenge due to the intricate and diverse nature of their composition, as well as their plasticity under changing environmental conditions. Optimization of analytical tools is crucial for an in-depth exploration of the lipidome of plants and algae. This review highlights how lipidomics analytical tools can be used to establish a complete mapping of plant and algal lipidomes. Acquiring this knowledge will pave the way for the use of plants and algae as sources of tailored lipids for both industrial and environmental applications. This aligns with the main challenges for society, upholding the natural resources of our planet and respecting their limits.

Abstract
Sphingolipids (SLs) are ubiquitous components of eukaryotic cell membranes and are found in some prokaryotic organisms and viruses. They are composed of a sphingoid backbone that may be acylated and glycosylated. Assembly of various sphingoid base, fatty acyl and glycosyl moieties results in highly diverse structures. The functional significance of variations in SL chemical diversity and abundance is still in the early stages of investigation. Among SL modifications, Δ8-desaturation of the sphingoid base occurs only in plants and fungi. In plants, SL Δ8-unsaturation is involved in cold hardiness. Our knowledge of the structure and functions of SLs in microalgae lags far behind that of animals, plants and fungi. Original SL structures have been reported from microalgae. However, functional studies are still missing. Ostreococcus tauri is a minimal microalga at the base of the green lineage and is therefore a key organism for understanding lipid evolution. In the present work, we achieved the detailed characterization of O. tauri SLs and unveiled unique glycosylceramides as sole complex SLs. The head groups are reminiscent of bacterial SLs, as they contain hexuronic acid residues and can be polyglycosylated. Ceramide backbones show a limited variety, and SL modification is restricted to Δ8-unsaturation. The Δ8-SL desaturase from O. tauri only produced E isomers. Expression of both Δ8-SL desaturase and Δ8-unsaturation of sphingolipids varied with temperature, with lower levels at 24°C than at 14°C. Overexpression of the Δ8-SL desaturase dramatically increases the level of Δ8 unsaturation at 24°C and is paralleled by a failure to increase cell size. Our work provides the first characterization of O. tauri SLs and functional evidence for the involvement of SL Δ8-unsaturation for temperature acclimation in microalgae, suggesting that this function is an ancestral feature in the green lineage.

Abstract
Understanding how microbial lipidomes adapt to environmental and nutrient stress is crucial for comprehending microbial survival and functionality. Certain anaerobic bacteria can synthesize glycerolipids with ether/ester bonds, yet the complexities of their lipidome remodeling under varying physicochemical and nutritional conditions remain largely unexplored. In this study, we thoroughly examined the lipidome adaptations of Desulfatibacillum alkenivorans strain PF2803T, a mesophilic anaerobic sulfate-reducing bacterium known for its high proportions of alkylglycerol ether lipids in its membrane, under various cultivation conditions including temperature, pH, salinity, and ammonium and phosphorous concentrations. Employing an extensive analytical and computational lipidomic methodology, we identified an assemblage of nearly 400 distinct lipids, including a range of glycerol ether/ester lipids with various polar head groups. Information theory-based analysis revealed that temperature fluctuations and phosphate scarcity profoundly influenced the lipidome's composition, leading to an enhanced diversity and specificity of novel lipids. Notably, phosphorous limitation led to the biosynthesis of novel glucuronosylglycerols and sulfur-containing aminolipids, termed butyramide cysteine glycerols, featuring various ether/ester bonds. This suggests a novel adaptive strategy for anaerobic heterotrophs to thrive under phosphorus-depleted conditions, characterized by a diverse array of nitrogen- and sulfur-containing polar head groups, moving beyond a reliance on conventional nonphospholipid types.

Abstract
Neuston, situated at the air-sea interface, stands as a crucial frontier in the realm of the global warming. Despite its unique habitat, there remains a need to substantiate the composition, diel dynamic and biotic-abiotic interaction of neustonic zooplankton in the tropical seas. In this study, we present rare observational data on neustonic zooplankton (0-20 cm) in the oligotrophic tropical South China Sea (SCS) during the summer of 2022. A total of eighteen samples were collected and analyzed, revealing the presence of fourteen taxa from eight phyla. The most prevalent group was Cypridina, accounting for 33.7% of the total abundance, followed by copepods (29.0%) and jellyfish (10.9%). Within copepods, the genus Pontella exhibited the highest relative abundance (38.0%). Additionally, each neuston taxon displayed unique diel distribution patterns. Cypridina was the most abundant taxon during the night (40.4%), while it shifted to copepod dominance during the day (50.4%). Among copepods, genus Pontella and larvae were dominant groups at night (44.7%) and during the day (30.0%), respectively. Moreover, a multivariate biota-environment analysis demonstrated that temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen and Si(OH)4 significantly impacted neuston composition. Notably, both jellyfish and sea snails showed a significant positive correlation with temperature, suggesting their potential dominance in the neuston community in response to future global warming in the oligotrophic tropical seas. This study lays a robust foundation for recognizing the neuston community in the oceanic SCS, and helps evaluate the long-term risks to neuston habitats under climate changes.

Abstract
Metabolomics, a recent addition to omics sciences, studies small molecules across plants, animals, humans, and marine organisms. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) are widely used in those studies, including microalgae metabolomics. NMR is non-destructive and highly reproducible but has limited sensitivity, which could be supplemented by joining GC-MS analysis. Extracting metabolites from macromolecules requires optimization for trustworthy results. Different extraction methods yield distinct profiles, emphasizing the need for optimization. The results indicated that the optimized extraction procedure successfully identified NMR and GC-MS-based metabolites in MeOH, CHCl3, and H2O extraction solvents. The findings represented the spectral information related to carbohydrates, organic molecules, and amino acids from the water-soluble metabolites fraction and a series of fatty acid chains, lipids, and sterols from the lipid fraction. Our study underscores the benefit of combining NMR and GC-MS techniques to comprehensively understand microalgae metabolomes, including high and low metabolite concentrations and abundances.•In this study, we focused on optimizing the extraction procedure and combining NMR and GC-MS techniques to overcome the low NMR sensitivity and the different detected range limits of NMR and GC-MS.•We explored metabolome diversity in a tropical strain of the small cells' diatom Cheatoceros tenuissimus.

Abstract
The effects of climate change are becoming more prevalent, and it is important to know how copepods, the most abundant class in zooplankton, will react to changing temperatures as they are the main food source for secondary consumers. They act as key transferers of nutrients from primary producers to organisms higher up the food chain. Little is known about the effects of temperature changes on copepods on the long term, i.e., over several generations. Especially the epigenetic domain seems to be understudied and the question remains whether the nutritional value of copepods will permanently change with rising water temperatures. In this research, the effects of temperature on the fatty acid and epigenetic profiles of the abundant planktonic copepod Acartia tonsa were investigated, since we expect to see a link between these two. Indeed, changing methylation patterns helped copepods to deal with higher temperatures, which is in line with the relative abundance of the most important fatty acids, e.g., DHA. However, this pattern was only observed when temperature increased slowly. A sudden increase in temperature showed the opposite effect; Acartia tonsa did not show deviant methylation patterns and the relative abundance of DHA and other important fatty acids dropped significantly after several generations. These results suggest that local fluctuations in temperature have a greater effect on Acartia tonsa than an elevation of the global mean.

Abstract
The cycling of major nutrients in the ocean is affected by large-scale phytoplankton blooms, which are hot spots of microbial life. Diverse microbial interactions regulate bloom dynamics. At the single-cell level, interactions between microorganisms are mediated by small molecules in the chemical crosstalk that determines the type of interaction, ranging from mutualism to pathogenicity. Algae interact with viruses, bacteria, parasites, grazers and other algae to modulate algal cell fate, and these interactions are dependent on the environmental context. Recent advances in mass spectrometry and single-cell technologies have led to the discovery of a growing number of infochemicals - metabolites that convey information - revealing the ability of algal cells to govern biotic interactions in the ocean. The diversity of infochemicals seems to account for the specificity in cellular response during microbial communication. Given the immense impact of algal blooms on biogeochemical cycles and climate regulation, a major challenge is to elucidate how microscale interactions control the fate of carbon and the recycling of major elements in the ocean. In this Review, we discuss microbial interactions and the role of infochemicals in algal blooms. We further explore factors that can impact microbial interactions and the available tools to decipher them in the natural environment.

Abstract
The oceanic-to-neritic species shift of microzooplanktonic tintinnids and their interaction with relevant abiotic variables are two crucial processes in the marine ecosystem. However, these processes remain poorly documented in China's marginal seas. In the summer of 2022, we investigated the community structure of pelagic tintinnids in surface waters from the South China Sea (SCS) to the Yellow Sea (YS), passing through the East China Sea (ECS). A number of 58 species from 23 genera were identified, with 36 and 22 species belonging to oceanic and neritic genera, respectively. The abundance proportion of oceanic and neritic genera exhibited a decreasing and increasing trend, respectively, from the SCS to YS. Furthermore, four distinctive tintinnid community groups were classified based on cluster analysis using tintinnid species and abundance data, and the position of southern Taiwan Strait was identified as the "Shift Point" for oceanic-to-neritic species dominance. The top two tintinnid species in each group showed distinct variations in body size. Additionally, multivariate biotic-abiotic statistical analyses revealed that temperature determined tintinnid species richness, while temperature, salinity, Si(OH)4, and Chl a determined tintinnid abundance. Our study provides a substantial foundation for recognizing the oceanic-to-neritic species shift of tintinnids in the China's marginal seas, and highlights the role of biotic-abiotic factors in driving biogeochemical fluxes and the potential response of microzooplankton to future climate change.

Abstract
Many invertebrate species possess the metabolic ability to synthesize long-chain ω3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) de novo. Due to their diverse effects on membrane architecture, neuroplasticity, growth and reproduction, PUFA have a high potential to positively influence the fitness of an organism. But how and when do these supposed advantages actually come into play? Other species, that are often closely related, pass natural selection without this special metabolic ability. The ω3-PUFA rich model organism Caenorhabditis elegans (Nematoda) and its mutant fat-1(wa9), lacking these PUFA, are a suitable test system. We analyzed potential impairments in reproduction and growth in a soil assay. Further, chemotaxis after aversive olfactory, associative learning and integration of a second sensory signal were assessed on agar plates. Moreover, we analyzed the phospholipid pattern of both C. elegans strains and further free-living nematodes species at different temperatures. While the phenotypic effects were rather small under standard conditions, lowering the temperature to 15 or even 10 °C or reducing the soil moisture, led to significant limitations, with the investigated parameters for neuroplasticity being most impaired. The ω3-PUFA free C. elegans mutant strain fat-1 did not adapt the fatty acid composition of its phospholipids to a decreasing temperature, while ω3-PUFA containing nematodes proportionally increased this PUFA group. In contrats, other ω3-PUFA free nematode species produced significantly more ω6-PUFA. Thus, the ability to synthesize long-chain ω3-PUFA de novo likely is fundamental for an increase in neuroplasticity and an efficient way for regulating membrane fluidity to maintain their functionality.

Abstract
Microbial metabolism is impressively flexible, enabling growth even when available nutrients differ greatly from biomass in redox state. E. coli, for example, rearranges its physiology to grow on reduced and oxidized carbon sources through several forms of fermentation and respiration. To understand the limits on and evolutionary consequences of metabolic flexibility, we developed a mathematical model coupling redox chemistry with principles of cellular resource allocation. Our integrated model clarifies key phenomena, including demonstrating that autotrophs grow slower than heterotrophs because of constraints imposed by intracellular production of reduced carbon. Our model further indicates that growth is improved by adapting the redox state of biomass to nutrients, revealing an unexpected mode of evolution where proteins accumulate mutations benefiting organismal redox balance.

Abstract
Traditionally, trophic ecology research on aquatic ecosystems has focused more on the quantity of dietary energy flow within food webs rather than food quality and its effects on organisms at various trophic levels. Recent studies emphasize that food quality is central to consumer growth and reproduction, and the importance of food quality for aquatic ecosystems has become increasingly well recognized. It is timely to synthesise these findings and identify potential future research directions. We conducted a systematic review of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (ω3-PUFAs) as a crucial component of high-quality food sources in freshwater ecosystems to evaluate their impact on a variety of consumers, and explore the effects of global change on these high-quality food sources and their transfer to higher trophic consumers within and across ecosystems. In freshwater ecosystems, algae rich in ω3 long-chain PUFAs, such as diatoms, dinoflagellates and cryptophytes, represent important high-quality food sources for consumers, whereas cyanobacteria, green algae, terrestrial vascular plants and macrophytes low in ω3 long-chain PUFAs are low-quality food sources. High-quality ω3-PUFA-containing food sources usually lead to increased growth and reproduction of aquatic consumers, e.g. benthic invertebrates, zooplankton and fish, and also provide ω3 long-chain PUFAs to riparian terrestrial consumers via emergent aquatic insects. Consumers feeding on high-quality ω3-PUFA-containing foods in turn represent high-quality food for their own predators. However, the ω3-PUFA content of food sources is sensitive to global environmental changes. Warming, eutrophication, increased light intensity (e.g. from loss of riparian shading), and pollutants potentially inhibit the synthesis of algal ω3-PUFAs while at the same time promoting the growth of lower-quality foods, such as cyanobacteria and green algae. These factors combined could lead to a significant reduction in the availability of ω3-PUFAs for consumers and constrain their overall fitness. Although the effect of individual environmental factors on high-quality ω3-PUFA-containing food sources has been investigated, multiple environmental factors (e.g. climate change, human activities, pollution) will act in combination and any synergistic effects on aquatic food webs remain unclear. Identifying the sources and fate of ω3-PUFAs within and across ecosystems could represent an important approach to understand the impact of multiple environmental factors on trophic relationships and the implications for populations of freshwater and riparian consumers. Maintaining the availability of high-quality ω3-PUFA-containing food sources may also be key to mitigating freshwater biodiversity loss due to global change.

Abstract
Human health and well-being, and how they are affected by terrestrial and freshwater ecosystems have been the subject of numerous studies. In contrast, there are very few such studies relating to marine ecosystems. Here, in the context of the Mediterranean Sea, we assess evidence of the broad interplay of relationships between marine habitats and human health and well-being. Our review shows that the major Mediterranean marine habitats provide various provisioning, cultural and regulating services that improve physical and mental health in a number of different ways. These include: (i) the provision of seafood rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which help to reduce the risk of developing certain types of illnesses; and also, species that produce bioactive compounds that are potential sources of new drugs; (ii) the provision of blue spaces - areas of water suitable for leisure and recreational activities able to inspire, educate, and appeal to the aesthetic senses - that not only increase physical and psychological health, but also foster an individual and collective sense of place and identity and contribute to improving social relations; and (iii) the regulation of climate change, and of water quality and pollution, for example via sequestration of carbon and heavy metals, thus reducing the associated health risks. Our results show that Mediterranean marine habitats are valuable for health and well-being, thus highlighting the need to conserve as much of these habitats as possible (particularly through marine protected areas) and to carry out new studies to determine the specific causal pathways by which certain characteristics of marine habitats - including biotic (e.g. marine biodiversity) and abiotic (e.g. water quality) factors - affect human health and well-being.

Abstract
Microbial lipids, used as taxonomic markers and physiological indicators, have mainly been studied through cultivation. However, this approach is limited due to the scarcity of cultures of environmental microbes, thereby restricting insights into the diversity of lipids and their ecological roles. Addressing this limitation, here we apply metalipidomics combined with metagenomics in the Black Sea, classifying and tentatively identifying 1623 lipid-like species across 18 lipid classes. We discovered over 200 novel, abundant, and structurally diverse sphingolipids in euxinic waters, including unique 1-deoxysphingolipids with long-chain fatty acids and sulfur-containing groups. Sphingolipids were thought to be rare in bacteria and their molecular and ecological functions in bacterial membranes remain elusive. However, genomic analysis focused on sphingolipid biosynthesis genes revealed that members of 38 bacterial phyla in the Black Sea can synthesize sphingolipids, representing a 4-fold increase from previously known capabilities and accounting for up to 25% of the microbial community. These sphingolipids appear to be involved in oxidative stress response, cell wall remodeling, and are associated with the metabolism of nitrogen-containing molecules. Our findings underscore the effectiveness of multi-omics approaches in exploring microbial chemical ecology.

Abstract
The biochemical composition of Antarctic krill, Euphausia superba, is largely determined by their feeding behaviour. As they supply energy for animals of a higher trophic level and are also commercialized for human consumption, the interest in research on the species is high. Lipids, especially phospholipids, make up a high proportion of dry weight in krill. Seasonal changes are well documented in the fingerprint of free fatty acids analysed after hydrolysis of phospholipids, but the underlying intact polar lipids are rarely considered. In this study, we evaluated the compositions of intact phospholipids (IPLs) in the stomach, digestive gland and hind gut of Antarctic krill caught in summer and autumn at the Antarctic Peninsula region. Using high-resolution mass spectrometry, the fatty acid composition of 179 intact phospholipids could be resolved. Most IPLs were phosphatidylcholines, followed by phosphatidylethanolamines. Several very long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids up to 38:8, which have not been reported in krill before, were identified. The composition shifted to higher molecular weight IPLs with a higher degree of unsaturation for summer samples, especially for samples of the digestive gland. The data supplied in this paper provides new insights into lipid dynamics between summer and autumn usually described by free fatty acid biomarkers.

Abstract
Microbial food webs (MFW) play an indispensable role in marine pelagic ecosystem, yet their composition and response to abiotic variables were poorly documented in the oligotrophic tropical Western Pacific. During winter of 2015, we conducted a survey to examine key components of MFW, including Synechococcus, Prochlorococcus, picoeukaryotes, heterotrophic prokaryotes (HP), heterotrophic/pigmented nanoflagellates and ciliates, across water column from surface to 2000 m. Each MFW component exhibited unique vertical distribution pattern, with abundance ratio varying over six and three orders of magnitude across Pico/Microplankton (1.6 ± 1.0 × 106) and Nano/Microplankton (3.2 ± 2.8 × 103), respectively. Furthermore, HP was main component for MFW in the bathypelagic (>1000 m) zone. Multivariate biota-environment analysis demonstrated that environmental variables, particularly temperature, significantly impacted MFW composition, suggesting that bottom-up control (resource availability) dominated the water column. Our study provides benchmark information for future environmental dynamics forcing on MFW in the oligotrophic tropical seas.

Abstract
Biomembranes are complex materials composed of lipids and proteins that compartmentalize biochemistry. They are actively remodeled in response to physical and metabolic cues, as well as during cell differentiation and stress. The concept of homeoviscous adaptation has become a textbook example of membrane responsiveness. Here, we discuss limitations and common misconceptions revolving around it. By highlighting key moments in the life cycle of a transmembrane protein, we illustrate that membrane thickness and a finely regulated membrane compressibility are crucial to facilitate proper membrane protein insertion, function, sorting, and inheritance. We propose that the unfolded protein response (UPR) provides a mechanism for endoplasmic reticulum (ER) membrane homeostasis by sensing aberrant transverse membrane stiffening and triggering adaptive responses that re-establish membrane compressibility.

Abstract
Previous data revealed the unexpected presence of genes encoding for long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acid (LC-PUFA) biosynthetic enzymes in transcriptomes from freshwater gammarids but not in marine species, even though closely related species were compared. This study aimed to clarify the origin and occurrence of selected LC-PUFA biosynthesis gene markers across all published gammarid transcriptomes. Through systematic searches, we confirmed the widespread occurrence of sequences from seven elongases and desaturases involved in LC-PUFA biosynthesis, in transcriptomes from freshwater gammarids but not marine species, and clarified that such occurrence is independent from the gammarid species and geographical origin. The phylogenetic analysis established that the retrieved elongase and desaturase sequences were closely related to bdelloid rotifers, confirming that multiple transcriptomes from freshwater gammarids contain contaminating rotifers' genetic material. Using the Adineta steineri genome, we investigated the genomic location and exon-intron organization of the elongase and desaturase genes, establishing they are all genome-anchored and, importantly, identifying instances of horizontal gene transfer. Finally, we provide compelling evidence demonstrating Bdelloidea desaturases and elongases enable these organisms to perform all the reactions for de novo biosynthesis of PUFA and, from them, LC-PUFA, an advantageous trait when considering the low abundance of these essential nutrients in freshwater environments.

Abstract
Aquatic single-cell organisms have long been believed to be unique primary producers of omega-3 long-chain (≥C20) polyunsaturated fatty acids (ω3 LC-PUFA). Multiple invertebrates including annelids have been discovered to possess methyl-end desaturases enabling key steps in the de novo synthesis of ω3 LC-PUFA, and thus potentially contributing to their production in the ocean. Along methyl-end desaturases, the repertoire and function of further LC-PUFA biosynthesising enzymes is largely missing in Annelida. In this study we examined the front-end desaturase gene repertoire across the phylum Annelida, from Polychaeta and Clitellata, major classes of annelids comprising most annelid diversity. We further characterised the functions of the encoded enzymes in selected representative species by using a heterologous expression system based in yeast, demonstrating that functions of Annelida front-end desaturases have highly diversified during their expansion in both terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. We concluded that annelids possess at least two front-end desaturases with Δ5 and Δ6Δ8 desaturase regioselectivities, enabling all the desaturation reactions required to convert the C18 precursors into the physiologically relevant LC-PUFA such as eicosapentaenoic and arachidonic acids, but not docosahexaenoic acid. Such a gene complement is conserved across the different taxonomic groups within Annelida.

Abstract
Global climate change is projected to raise global temperatures by 3.3-5.7 °C by 2100, resulting in changes in species composition, abundance, and nutritional quality of organisms at the base of the marine food web. Predicted increases in prey availability and reductions in prey nutritional quality under climate warming in certain marine systems are expected to impact higher trophic levels, such as fish and humans. There is limited knowledge of the interplay between food quantity and quality under warming, specifically when food availability is high, but quality is low. Here, we conducted an experiment assessing the effects of food quality (fatty acid composition and ratios) on juvenile Chinook salmon's (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) body and nutritional condition, specifically focusing on RNA:DNA ratio, Fulton's K, growth, mortality and their fatty acid composition. Experimental diets represented three different climate change scenarios with 1) a present-day diet (Euphausia pacifica), 2) a control diet (commercial aquaculture diet), and 3) a predicted Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) worst-case scenario diet with low essential fatty acid concentrations (IPCC SSP5-8.5). We tested how growth rates, RNA:DNA ratio, Fulton's K index, fatty acid composition and mortality rates in juvenile Chinook salmon compared across diet treatments. Fatty acids were incorporated into the salmon muscle at varying rates but, on average, reflected dietary concentrations. High dietary concentrations of DHA, EPA and high DHA:EPA ratios, under the control and present-day diets, increased fish growth and condition. In contrast, low concentrations of DHA and EPA and low DHA:EPA ratios in the diets under climate change scenario were not compensated for by increased food quantity. This result highlights the importance of considering food quality when assessing fish response to changing ocean conditions.

Abstract
Phytoplankton are responsible for half of all oxygen production and drive the ocean carbon cycle. Metabolic theory predicts that increasing global temperatures will cause phytoplankton to become more heterotrophic and smaller. Here, we uncover the metabolic trade-offs between cellular space, energy, and stress management driving phytoplankton thermal acclimation and how these might be overcome through evolutionary adaptation. We show that the observed relationships between traits such as chlorophyll, lipid content, C:N, and size can be predicted on the basis of the metabolic demands of the cell, the thermal dependency of transporters, and changes in membrane lipids. We suggest that many of the observed relationships are not fixed physiological constraints but rather can be altered through adaptation. For example, the evolution of lipid metabolism can favor larger cells with higher lipid content to mitigate oxidative stress. These results have implications for rates of carbon sequestration and export in a warmer ocean.

Abstract
Algae-produced long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LC-PUFA; with ≥20 carbon atoms) are key biomolecules for consumer production and animal health. They are transferred to higher trophic levels and accumulated in food chains. However, LC-PUFA accumulation in consumers and their trophic transfer vary with the diet quality and the physiological demand for LC-PUFA of consumers. The goal of this study was to investigate spatial and taxonomic differences in LC-PUFA retention of coastal fish predators that potentially differ in their habitat use (benthic versus pelagic) and prey quality. We analyzed the fatty acid (FA) composition of common fish species, namely roach and European perch, as well as their potential prey from benthic and pelagic habitats in three bays of the northern Baltic Sea. We then assessed whether the fish LC-PUFA retention differed between species and among the study bays with different diet quality, that is, LC-PUFA availability. Our data indicated taxon-specific differences in the retention of LC-PUFA and their precursor FA in fish (i.e., short-chain PUFA with <20 carbon atoms). Perch did not show any spatial variation in the retention of all these FA, while roach showed spatial differences in the retention of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and their precursor FA, but not eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). Data suggest that diet quality and trophic reliance on benthic prey underlay the DHA retention differences in roach. Although the PUFA supply might differ among sites, the low spatial variation in LC-PUFA content of perch and roach indicates that both fishes were able to selectively retain dietary LC-PUFA. Climate change together with other existing human-caused environmental stressors are expected to alter the algal assemblages and lower their LC-PUFA supply for aquatic food webs. Our findings imply that these stressors will pose heterogeneous impacts on different fish predators. We advocate further investigations on how environmental changes would affect the nutritional quality of the basal trophic level, and their subsequent impacts on LC-PUFA retention, trophic ecology, and performance of individual fish species.

Abstract
Unilamellar liposomes often are employed in investigations of lipid-protein interactions and the delivery of drugs in therapies for disease. Also, related lipid-containing nanoparticles have been developed as elements of a new class of mRNA vaccines. We show that only unilamellar films form in equilibrium lipid dispersions, at temperature values {T*} that depend on the identities of the lipids (e.g., T* ≈ 29 °C for DMPC). Thermodynamic analysis confirms that films at air-water surfaces can be used to monitor the properties of the lipid vesicles that form in the dispersion. When T > T*, critical exponents describing film properties as T approaches T* are μ ≈ 1.4 and ν ≈ 0.7, which are close to values for the interfacial tension and the correlation length of density fluctuations at fluid interfaces. These results, and observations that within the bilayer the lateral diffusion of fluorescent lipid probes demonstrates increases at T*, suggest that unilamellar vesicles at T* are a transition state between two different multilamellar structures. We generalize the thermodynamic arguments to explain the linkage between lipid structures in the surface and bulk dispersion within more complex samples, showing that dispersions containing total lipid extracts of cell membranes have properties similar to those in dispersions containing single lipids. Information from various independent studies indicates that T* noted for bilayer membranes of a population of cells is identical to the temperature at which the growth or gestation of the cells occurs in vivo. Examples include whole-cell lipid extracts obtained from bacteria, and poikilothermic and homeothermic animals.

Abstract
Long-chain (≥C20 ) polyunsaturated fatty acids (LC-PUFAs) are physiologically important fatty acids for most animals, including humans. Although most LC-PUFA production occurs in aquatic primary producers such as microalgae, recent research indicates the ability of certain groups of (mainly marine) invertebrates for endogenous LC-PUFA biosynthesis and/or bioconversion from dietary precursors. The genetic pathways for and mechanisms behind LC-PUFA biosynthesis remain unknown in many invertebrates to date, especially in non-model species. However, the numerous genomic and transcriptomic resources currently available can contribute to our knowledge of the LC-PUFA biosynthetic capabilities of metazoans. Within our previously generated transcriptome of the benthic harpacticoid copepod Platychelipus littoralis, we detected expression of one methyl-end desaturase, one front-end desaturase, and seven elongases, key enzymes responsible for LC-PUFA biosynthesis. To demonstrate their functionality, we characterized eight of them using heterologous expression in yeast. The P. littoralis methyl-end desaturase has Δ15/17/19 desaturation activity, enabling biosynthesis of α-linolenic acid, eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) from 18:2 n-6, 20:4 n-6 and 22:5 n-6, respectively. Its front-end desaturase has Δ4 desaturation activity from 22:5 n-3 to DHA, implying that P. littoralis has multiple pathways to produce this physiologically important fatty acid. All studied P. littoralis elongases possess varying degrees of elongation activity for saturated and unsaturated fatty acids, producing aliphatic hydrocarbon chains with lengths of up to 30 carbons. Our investigation revealed a functionally diverse range of fatty acid biosynthesis genes in copepods, which highlights the need to scrutinize the role that primary consumers could perform in providing essential nutrients to upper trophic levels.

Abstract
Climate change can have cascading impacts on biochemical reactions in aquatic ecosystems. Aquatic ectotherms can adapt to surrounding temperatures by using long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LC-PUFAs) to maintain cell membrane fluidity. In a warming scenario, less LC-PUFA is needed to maintain fluidity. Our objective was to determine the impact of low dietary LC-PUFA and warm water temperature on growth, fatty acid (FA) storage, and expression of lipid metabolism-related transcripts in Atlantic salmon. Salmon (141 g) were fed two diets (high or low LC-PUFA) at either 12 °C or 16 °C for 16 weeks. Salmon weighed more and consumed more food at 16 °C and when fed the low-LC-PUFA diet. Liver and muscle FA mostly depended on diet rather than temperature. DHA in muscle was higher at 16 °C and in salmon fed the high-LC-PUFA diet. Levels of FA desaturation transcripts were more highly expressed at 16 °C and in salmon fed the low-LC-PUFA diet, which suggests synthesis of LC-PUFA. Overall, with slow, chronic temperature increases, salmon may adapt to low dietary LC-PUFA by synthesizing more when required.

Abstract
Sulfurimonas species are among the most abundant sulfur-oxidizing bacteria in the marine environment. They are capable of using different electron acceptors, this metabolic flexibility is favorable for their niche adaptation in redoxclines. When oxygen is depleted, most Sulfurimonas spp. (e.g., Sulfurimonas gotlandica) use nitrate ([Formula: see text]) as an electron acceptor to oxidize sulfur, including sulfide (HS-), S0 and thiosulfate, for energy production. Candidatus Sulfurimonas marisnigri SoZ1 and Candidatus Sulfurimonas baltica GD2, recently isolated from the redoxclines of the Black Sea and Baltic Sea respectively, have been shown to use manganese dioxide (MnO2) rather than [Formula: see text] for sulfur oxidation. The use of different electron acceptors is also dependent on differences in the electron transport chains embedded in the cellular membrane, therefore changes in the membrane, including its lipid composition, are expected but are so far unexplored. Here, we used untargeted lipidomic analysis to reveal changes in the composition of the lipidomes of three representative Sulfurimonas species grown using either [Formula: see text] and MnO2. We found that all Sulfurimonas spp. produce a series of novel phosphatidyldiazoalkyl-diacylglycerol lipids. Ca. Sulfurimonas baltica GD2 adapts its membrane lipid composition depending on the electron acceptors it utilizes for growth and survival. When carrying out MnO2-dependent sulfur oxidation, the novel phosphatidyldiazoalkyl-diacylglycerol headgroup comprises shorter alkyl moieties than when sulfur oxidation is [Formula: see text]-dependent. This is the first report of membrane lipid adaptation when an organism is grown with different electron acceptors. We suggest novel diazoalkyl lipids have the potential to be used as a biomarker for different conditions in redox-stratified systems.
