Using In situ Transmission Electron Microscopy to Study Strong Metal-Support Interactions in Heterogeneous Catalysis

Precisely controlling the microstructure of supported metal catalysts and regulating metal-support interactions at the atomic level are essential for achieving highly efficient heterogeneous catalysts. Strong metal-support interaction (SMSI) not only stabilizes metal nanoparticles and improves their resistance to sintering but also modulates the electrical interaction between metal species and the support, optimizing the catalytic activity and selectivity. Therefore, understating the formation mechanism of SMSI and its dynamic evolution during the chemical reaction at the atomic scale is crucial for guiding the structural design and performance optimization of supported metal catalysts. Recent advancements in in situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) have shed new light on these complex phenomena, providing deeper insights into the SMSI dynamics. Here, the research progress of in situ TEM investigation on SMSI in heterogeneous catalysis is systematically reviewed, focusing on the formation dynamics, structural evolution during the catalytic reactions, and regulation methods of SMSI. The significant advantages of in situ TEM technologies for SMSI research are also highlighted. Moreover, the challenges and probable development paths of in situ TEM studies on the SMSI are also provided.

Metal-support interactions in metal oxide-supported atomic, cluster, and nanoparticle catalysis

Supported metal catalysts are essential to a plethora of processes in the chemical industry. The overall performance of these catalysts depends strongly on the interaction of adsorbates at the atomic level, which can be manipulated and controlled by the different constituents of the active material (i.e., support and active metal). The description of catalyst activity and the relationship between active constituent and the support, or metal-support interactions (MSI), in heterogeneous (thermo)catalysts is a complex phenomenon with multivariate (dependent and independent) contributions that are difficult to disentangle, both experimentally and theoretically. So-called "strong metal-support interactions" have been reported for several decades and summarized in excellent review articles. However, in recent years, there has been a proliferation of new findings related to atomically dispersed metal sites, metal oxide defects, and, for example, the generation and evolution of MSI under reaction conditions, which has led to the designation of (sub)classifications of MSI deserving to be critically and systematically evaluated. These include dynamic restructuring under alternating redox and reaction conditions, adsorbate-induced MSI, and evidence of strong interactions in oxide-supported metal oxide catalysts. Here, we review recent literature on MSI in oxide-supported metal particles to provide an up-to-date understanding of the underlying physicochemical principles that dominate the observed effects in supported metal atomic, cluster, and nanoparticle catalysts. Critical evaluation of different subclassifications of MSI is provided, along with discussions on the formation mechanisms, theoretical and characterization advances, and tuning strategies to manipulate catalytic reaction performance. We also provide a perspective on the future of the field, and we discuss the analysis of different MSI effects on catalysis quantitatively.

Hydroxylated TiO2-induced high-density Ni clusters for breaking the activity-selectivity trade-off of CO2 hydrogenation

The reverse water gas shift reaction can be considered as a promising route to mitigate global warming by converting CO2 into syngas in a large scale, while it is still challenging for non-Cu-based catalysts to break the trade-off between activity and selectivity. Here, the relatively high loading of Ni species is highly dispersed on hydroxylated TiO2 through the strong Ni and -OH interactions, thereby inducing the formation of rich and stable Ni clusters (~1 nm) on anatase TiO2 during the reverse water gas shift reaction. This Ni cluster/TiO2 catalyst shows a simultaneous high CO2 conversion and high CO selectivity. Comprehensive characterizations and theoretical calculations demonstrate Ni cluster/TiO2 interfacial sites with strong CO2 activation capacity and weak CO adsorption are responsible for its unique catalytic performances. This work disentangles the activity-selectivity trade-off of the reverse water gas shift reaction, and emphasizes the importance of metal-OH interactions on surface.

Support effect on Ni-based mono- and bimetallic catalysts in CO2 hydrogenation

Aiming at a comprehensive understanding of support effects on Ni-based bimetallic catalyst for CO2 hydrogenation, spectroscopy (DRIFTS) with CO as a probe molecule and temperature-programmed techniques were used to investigate the impact of different supports (MgO, CeO2, ZrO2) on Ni- and Ni,Fe catalysts. Kinetic parameters revealed that the higher selectivity to methanation for Ni and Ni,Fe supported on the reducible oxides (CeO2, ZrO2) is due to the inhibition of reverse water-gas shift reaction (RWGS) by hydrogen. A promoting effect of Fe on Ni was only observed on MgO-supported catalysts. In situ DRIFTS with CO adsorption showed different electronic properties of Ni sites with partially reduced oxide (i.e. ZrO2 and CeO2). H2-TPR and CO2-TPD confirmed the significant role of metal-support interaction (MSI) in CeO2-supported catalysts for CO2 activation. The MSI between Ni/Ni,Fe and reducible supports are crucial for catalytic performance, ultimately leading to the higher activity and stability in CO2 hydrogenation.

Unraveling the Dynamic Properties of New-Age Energy Materials Chemistry Using Advanced In Situ Transmission Electron Microscopy

The field of energy storage and conversion materials has witnessed transformative advancements owing to the integration of advanced in situ characterization techniques. Among them, numerous real-time characterization techniques, especially in situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM)/scanning TEM (STEM) have tremendously increased the atomic-level understanding of the minute transition states in energy materials during electrochemical processes. Advanced forms of in situ/operando TEM and STEM microscopic techniques also provide incredible insights into material phenomena at the finest scale and aid to monitor phase transformations and degradation mechanisms in lithium-ion batteries. Notably, the solid-electrolyte interface (SEI) is one the most significant factors that associated with the performance of rechargeable batteries. The SEI critically controls the electrochemical reactions occur at the electrode-electrolyte interface. Intricate chemical reactions in energy materials interfaces can be effectively monitored using temperature-sensitive in situ STEM techniques, deciphering the reaction mechanisms prevailing in the degradation pathways of energy materials with nano- to micrometer-scale spatial resolution. Further, the advent of cryogenic (Cryo)-TEM has enhanced these studies by preserving the native state of sensitive materials. Cryo-TEM also allows the observation of metastable phases and reaction intermediates that are otherwise challenging to capture. Along with these sophisticated techniques, Focused ion beam (FIB) induction has also been instrumental in preparing site-specific cross-sectional samples, facilitating the high-resolution analysis of interfaces and layers within energy devices. The holistic integration of these advanced characterization techniques provides a comprehensive understanding of the dynamic changes in energy materials. This review highlights the recent progress in employing state-of-the-art characterization techniques such as in situ TEM, STEM, Cryo-TEM, and FIB for detailed investigation into the structural and chemical dynamics of energy storage and conversion materials.

Black titanium oxide: synthesis, modification, characterization, physiochemical properties, and emerging applications for energy conversion and storage, and environmental sustainability

Since its advent in 2011, black titanium oxide (B-TiOx) has garnered significant attention due to its exceptional optical characteristics, notably its enhanced absorption spectrum ranging from 200 to 2000 nm, in stark contrast to its unmodified counterpart. The escalating urgency to address global climate change has spurred intensified research into this material for sustainable hydrogen production through thermal, photocatalytic, electrocatalytic, or hybrid water-splitting techniques. The rapid advancements in this dynamic field necessitate a comprehensive update. In this review, we endeavor to provide a detailed examination and forward-looking insights into the captivating attributes, synthesis methods, modifications, and characterizations of B-TiOx, as well as a nuanced understanding of its physicochemical properties. We place particular emphasis on the potential integration of B-TiOx into solar and electrochemical energy systems, highlighting its applications in green hydrogen generation, CO2 reduction, and supercapacitor technology, among others. Recent breakthroughs in the structure-property relationship of B-TiOx and its applications, grounded in both theoretical and empirical studies, are underscored. Additionally, we will address the challenges of scaling up B-TiOx production, its long-term stability, and economic viability to align with ambitious future objectives.

Tuning Adsorbate-Mediated Strong Metal-Support Interaction by Oxygen Vacancy: A Case Study in Ru/TiO2

The adsorbate-mediated strong metal-support interaction (A-SMSI) offers a reversible means of altering the selectivity of supported metal catalysts, thereby providing a powerful tool for facile modulation of catalytic performance. However, the fundamental understanding of A-SMSI remains inadequate and methods for tuning A-SMSI are still in their nascent stages, impeding its stabilization under reaction conditions. Here, we report that the initial concentration of oxygen vacancy in oxide supports plays a key role in tuning the A-SMSI between Ru nanoparticles and defected titania (TiO2-x). Based on this new understanding, we demonstrate the in situ formation of A-SMSI under reaction conditions, obviating the typically required CO2-rich pretreatment. The as-formed A-SMSI layer exhibits remarkable stability at various temperatures, enabling excellent activity, selectivity and long-term stability in catalyzing the reverse water gas-shift reaction. This study deepens the understanding of the A-SMSI and the ability to stabilize A-SMSI under reaction conditions represents a key step for practical catalytic applications.

Defective TiOx overlayers catalyze propane dehydrogenation promoted by base metals

The industrial catalysts utilized for propane dehydrogenation (PDH) to propylene, an important alternative to petroleum-based cracking processes, either use expensive metals or metal oxides that are environmentally unbenign. We report that a typically less-active oxide, titanium oxide (TiO2), can be combined with earth-abundant metallic nickel (Ni) to form an unconventional Ni@TiOx catalyst for efficient PDH. The catalyst demonstrates a 94% propylene selectivity at 40% propane conversion and superior stability under industrially relevant conditions. Complete encapsulation of Ni nanoparticles was allowed at elevated temperatures (>550°C). A mechanistic study suggested that the defective TiOx overlayer consisting of tetracoordinated Ti sites with oxygen vacancies is catalytically active. Subsurface metallic Ni acts as an electronic promoter to accelerate carbon-hydrogen bond activation and hydrogen (H2) desorption on the TiOx overlayer.

Enhanced electrocatalytic biomass oxidation at low voltage by Ni2+-O-Pd interfaces

Challenges in direct catalytic oxidation of biomass-derived aldehyde and alcohol into acid with high activity and selectivity hinder the widespread biomass application. Herein, we demonstrate that a Pd/Ni(OH)2 catalyst with abundant Ni2+-O-Pd interfaces allows electrooxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural to 2, 5-furandicarboxylic acid with a selectivity near 100 % and 2, 5-furandicarboxylic acid yield of 97.3% at 0.6 volts (versus a reversible hydrogen electrode) in 1 M KOH electrolyte under ambient conditions. The rate-determining step of the intermediate oxidation of 5-hydroxymethyl-2-furancarboxylic acid is promoted by the increased OH species and low C-H activation energy barrier at Ni2+-O-Pd interfaces. Further, the Ni2+-O-Pd interfaces prevent the agglomeration of Pd nanoparticles during the reaction, greatly improving the stability of the catalyst. In this work, Pd/Ni(OH)2 catalyst can achieve 100% 5-hydroxymethylfurfural conversion and >90% 2, 5-furandicarboxylic acid selectivity in a flow-cell and work stably over 200 h under a fixed cell voltage of 0.85 V.

Enrooted-Type Metal-Support Interaction Boosting Oxygen Evolution Reaction in Acidic Media

Supported metal catalysts with appropriate metal-support interactions (MSIs) hold a great promise for heterogeneous catalysis. However, ensuring tight immobilization of metal clusters/nanoparticles on the support while maximizing the exposure of surface active sites remains a huge challenge. Herein, we report an Ir/WO3 catalyst with a new enrooted-type MSI in which Ir clusters are, unprecedentedly, atomically enrooted into the WO3 lattice. The enrooted Ir atoms decrease the electron density of the constructed interface compared to the adhered (root-free) type, thereby achieving appropriate adsorption toward oxygen intermediates, ultimately leading to high activity and stability for oxygen evolution in acidic media. Importantly, this work provides a new enrooted-type supported metal catalyst, which endows suitable MSI and maximizes the exposure of surface active sites in contrast to the conventional adhered, embedded, and encapsulated types.

H-Glass Supported Hybrid Gold Nano-Islands for Visible-Light-Driven Hydrogen Evolution

Flat panel reactors, coated with photocatalytic materials, offer a sustainable approach for the commercial production of hydrogen (H2) with zero carbon footprint. Despite this, achieving high solar-to-hydrogen (STH) conversion efficiency with these reactors is still a significant challenge due to the low utilization efficiency of solar light and rapid charge recombination. Herein, hybrid gold nano-islands (HGNIs) are developed on transparent glass support to improve the STH efficiency. Plasmonic HGNIs are grown on an in-house developed active glass sheet composed of sodium aluminum phosphosilicate oxide glass (H-glass) using the thermal dewetting method at 550 °C under an ambient atmosphere. HGNIs with various oxidation states (Au0, Au+, and Au-) and multiple interfaces are obtained due to the diffusion of the elements from the glass structure, which also facilitates the lifetime of the hot electron to be ≈2.94 ps. H-glass-supported HGNIs demonstrate significant STH conversion efficiency of 0.6%, without any sacrificial agents, via water dissociation. This study unveils the specific role of H-glass-supported HGNIs in facilitating light-driven chemical conversions, offering new avenues for the development of high-performance photocatalysts in various chemical conversion reactions for large-scale commercial applications.

Thermally Stable Oxide-Capsulated Metal Nanoparticles Structure for Strong Metal-Support Interaction via Ultrafast Laser Plasmonic Nanowelding

Strong metal-support interaction (SMSI) has drawn much attention in heterogeneous catalysts due to its stable and excellent catalytic efficiency. However, construction of high-performance oxide-capsulated metal nanostructures meets great challenge in materials thermodynamic compatibility. In this work, dynamically controlled formation of oxide-capsulated metal nanoparticles (NPs) structures is demonstrated by ultrafast laser plasmonic nanowelding. Under the strong localized electromagnetic field interaction, metal (Au) NPs are dragged by an optical force toward oxide NPs (TiO2). Intense energy is simultaneously injected into this heterojunction area, where TiO2 is precisely ablated. With the embedding of metal into oxide, optical force on Au gradually turned from attractive to repulsive due to the varied metal-dielectric environment. Meanwhile, local ablated oxides are redeposited on Au NP. Upon the whole coverage of metal NP, the implantation behavior of metal NP is stopped, resulting in a controlled metal-oxide eccentric structure with capsulated oxide layer thickness ≈0.72-1.30 nm. These oxide-capsulated metal NPs structures can preserve their configurations even after thermal annealing in air at 600 °C for 10 min. This ultrafast laser plasmonic nanowelding can also extend to oxide-capsulated metal nanostructure fabrication with broad materials combinations (e.g., Au/ZnO, Au/MgO, etc.), which shows great potential in designing/constructing nanoscale high-performance catalysts.

Atomic dynamics of electrified solid-liquid interfaces in liquid-cell TEM

Electrified solid-liquid interfaces (ESLIs) play a key role in various electrochemical processes relevant to energy1-5, biology6 and geochemistry7. The electron and mass transport at the electrified interfaces may result in structural modifications that markedly influence the reaction pathways. For example, electrocatalyst surface restructuring during reactions can substantially affect the catalysis mechanisms and reaction products1-3. Despite its importance, direct probing the atomic dynamics of solid-liquid interfaces under electric biasing is challenging owing to the nature of being buried in liquid electrolytes and the limited spatial resolution of current techniques for in situ imaging through liquids. Here, with our development of advanced polymer electrochemical liquid cells for transmission electron microscopy (TEM), we are able to directly monitor the atomic dynamics of ESLIs during copper (Cu)-catalysed CO2 electroreduction reactions (CO2ERs). Our observation reveals a fluctuating liquid-like amorphous interphase. It undergoes reversible crystalline-amorphous structural transformations and flows along the electrified Cu surface, thus mediating the crystalline Cu surface restructuring and mass loss through the interphase layer. The combination of real-time observation and theoretical calculations unveils an amorphization-mediated restructuring mechanism resulting from charge-activated surface reactions with the electrolyte. Our results open many opportunities to explore the atomic dynamics and its impact in broad systems involving ESLIs by taking advantage of the in situ imaging capability.

Hydrogenated TiO2 Carbon Support for PtRu Anode Catalyst in High-Performance Anion-Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells

The availability of durable, high-performance electrocatalysts for the hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) is currently a constraint for anion-exchange membrane fuel cells (AEMFCs). Herein, a rapid microwave-assisted synthesis method is used to develop a core-shell catalyst support based on a hydrogenated TiO2/carbon for PtRu nanoparticles (NPs). The hydrogenated TiO2 provides a strong metal-support interaction with the PtRu NPs, which improves the catalyst's oxophilicity and HOR activity compared to commercial PtRu/C and enables greater size control of the catalyst NPs. The as-synthesized PtRu/TiO2/C-400 electrocatalyst exhibits respectable performance in an AEMFC operated at 80 °C, yielding the highest current density (up to 3× higher) within the catalytic region (compared at 0.80-0.90 V) and voltage efficiency (68%@ 0.5 A cm-2) values in the compared literature. In addition, the cell demonstrates promising short-term voltage stability with a minor voltage decay of 1.5 mV h-1. This "first-of-its-kind in alkaline" work may open further research avenues to develop rapid synthesis methods to prepare advanced core-shell metal-oxide/carbon supports for electrocatalysts for use in the next-generation of AEMFCs with potential applicability to the broader electrochemical systems research community.

Condensed Layer Deposition of Nanoscopic TiO2 Overlayers on High-Surface-Area Electrocatalysts

Encapsulating an electrocatalytic material with a semipermeable, nanoscopic oxide overlayer offers a promising approach to enhancing its stability, activity, and/or selectivity compared to an unencapsulated electrocatalyst. However, applying nanoscopic oxide encapsulation layers to high-surface-area electrodes such as nanoparticle-supported porous electrodes is a challenging task. This study demonstrates that the recently developed condensed layer deposition (CLD) method can be used for depositing nanoscopic (sub-10 nm thick) titanium dioxide (TiO2) overlayers onto high-surface-area platinized carbon foam electrodes. Characterization of the overlayers by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) showed that the films are amorphous, while X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy confirmed that they exhibit TiO2 stoichiometry. Electrodes were also characterized by hydrogen underpotential deposition (Hupd) and carbon monoxide (CO) stripping, demonstrating that the Pt electrocatalysts remain electrochemically active after encapsulation. Additionally, copper underpotential deposition (Cuupd) measurements revealed that TiO2 overlayers are effective at blocking Cu2+ from reaching the TiO2/Pt buried interface and were used to estimate that between 43 and 98% of Pt surface sites were encapsulated. Overall, this study shows that CLD is a promising approach for depositing nanoscopic protective overlayers on high-surface-area electrodes.

Reverse water gas-shift reaction product driven dynamic activation of molybdenum nitride catalyst surface

In heterogeneous catalysis catalyst activation is often observed during the reaction process, which is mostly attributed to the induction by reactants. In this work we report that surface structure of molybdenum nitride (MoNx) catalyst exhibits a high dependency on the partial pressure or concentration of reaction products i.e., CO and H2O in reverse water gas-shift reaction (RWGS) (CO2:H2 = 1:3) but not reactants of CO2 and H2. Molybdenum oxide (MoOx) overlayers formed by oxidation with H2O are observed at reaction pressure below 10 mbar or with low partial pressure of CO/H2O products, while CO-induced surface carbonization happens at reaction pressure above 100 mbar and with high partial pressure of CO/H2O products. The reaction products induce restructuring of MoNx surface into more active molybdenum carbide (MoCx) to increase the reaction rate and make for higher partial pressure CO, which in turn promote further surface carbonization of MoNx. We refer to this as the positive feedback between catalytic activity and catalyst activation in RWGS, which should be widely present in heterogeneous catalysis.

Boosting Efficient and Sustainable Alkaline Water Oxidation on a W-CoOOH-TT Pair-Sites Catalyst Synthesized via Topochemical Transformation

The development of facile methods for constructing highly active, cost-effective catalysts that meet ampere-level current density and durability requirements for an oxygen evolution reaction is crucial. Herein, a general topochemical transformation strategy is posited: M-Co9S8 single-atom catalysts (SACs) are directly converted into M-CoOOH-TT (M = W, Mo, Mn, V) pair-sites catalysts under the role of incorporating of atomically dispersed high-valence metals modulators through potential cycling. Furthermore, in situ X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy is used to track the dynamic topochemical transformation process at the atomic level. The W-Co9S8 breaks through the low overpotential of 160 mV at 10 mA cm-2. A series of pair-site catalysts exhibit a large current density of approaching 1760 mA cm-2 at 1.68 V vs reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) in alkaline water oxidation and achieve a ≈240-fold enhancement in the normalized intrinsic activity compare to that reported CoOOH, and sustainable stability of 1000 h. Moreover, the O─O bond formation is confirmed via a two-site mechanism, supported by in situ synchrotron radiation infrared and density functional theory (DFT) simulations, which breaks the limit of adsorption-energy scaling relationship on conventional single-site.

X-ray standing wave characterization of the strong metal-support interaction in Co/TiOx model catalysts

The strong metal-support interaction (SMSI) is a phenomenon observed in supported metal catalyst systems in which reducible metal oxide supports can form overlayers over the surface of active metal nanoparticles (NPs) under a hydrogen (H2) environment at elevated temperatures. SMSI has been shown to affect catalyst performance in many reactions by changing the type and number of active sites on the catalyst surface. Laboratory methods for the analysis of SMSI at the nanoparticle-ensemble level are lacking and mostly based on indirect evidence, such as gas chemisorption. Here, we demonstrate the possibility to detect and characterize SMSIs in Co/TiOx model catalysts using the laboratory X-ray standing wave (XSW) technique for a large ensemble of NPs at the bulk scale. We designed a thermally stable MoNx/SiNx periodic multilayer to retain XSW generation after reduction with H2 gas at 600°C. The model catalyst system was synthesized here by deposition of a thin TiOx layer on top of the periodic multilayer, followed by Co NP deposition via spare ablation. A partial encapsulation of Co NPs by TiOx was identified by analyzing the change in Ti atomic distribution. This novel methodological approach can be extended to observe surface restructuring of model catalysts in situ at high temperature (up to 1000°C) and pressure (≤3 mbar), and can also be relevant for fundamental studies in the thermal stability of membranes, as well as metallurgy.

Constructing regulable supports via non-stoichiometric engineering to stabilize ruthenium nanoparticles for enhanced pH-universal water splitting

Establishing appropriate metal-support interactions is imperative for acquiring efficient and corrosion-resistant catalysts for water splitting. Herein, the interaction mechanism between Ru nanoparticles and a series of titanium oxides, including TiO, Ti4O7 and TiO2, designed via facile non-stoichiometric engineering is systematically studied. Ti4O7, with the unique band structure, high conductivity and chemical stability, endows with ingenious metal-support interaction through interfacial Ti-O-Ru units, which stabilizes Ru species during OER and triggers hydrogen spillover to accelerate HER kinetics. As expected, Ru/Ti4O7 displays ultralow overpotentials of 8 mV and 150 mV for HER and OER with a long operation of 500 h at 10 mA cm-2 in acidic media, which is expanded in pH-universal environments. Benefitting from the excellent bifunctional performance, the proton exchange membrane and anion exchange membrane electrolyzer assembled with Ru/Ti4O7 achieves superior performance and robust operation. The work paves the way for efficient energy conversion devices.

Control of metal-support interaction for tunable CO hydrogenation performance over Ru/TiO2 nanocatalysts

The catalytic behavior of CO hydrogenation can be modulated by metal-support interactions, while the role of the support remains elusive. Herein, we demonstrate that the presence of strong metal-support interactions (SMSI) depends strongly on the crystal phase of TiO2 (rutile or anatase) and the treatment conditions for the TiO2 support, which could critically control the activity and selectivity of Ru-based nanocatalysts for CO hydrogenation. High CO conversion and olefin selectivity were observed for Ru/rutile-TiO2 (Ru/r-TiO2), while catalysts supported by anatase (a-TiO2) showed almost no activity. Characterization confirmed that the SMSI effect could be neglected for Ru/r-TiO2, while it is dominant on Ru/a-TiO2 after reduction at 300 °C, resulting in the coverage of Ru nanoparticles by TiOx overlayers. Such SMSI could be suppressed by H2 treatment of the a-TiO2 support and the catalytic activity of the as-obtained Ru/a-TiO2(H2) can be greatly elevated from almost inactive to >50% CO conversion with >60% olefin selectivity. Further results indicated that the surface reducibility of the TiO2 support determines the SMSI state and catalytic performance of Ru/TiO2 in the CO hydrogenation reaction. This work offers an effective strategy to design efficient catalysts for the FTO reaction by regulating the crystal phase of the support.

A Ce-CuZn catalyst with abundant Cu/Zn-OV-Ce active sites for CO2 hydrogenation to methanol

CO2 hydrogenation to chemicals and fuels is a significant approach for achieving carbon neutrality. It is essential to rationally design the chemical structure and catalytic active sites towards the development of efficient catalysts. Here we show a Ce-CuZn catalyst with enriched Cu/Zn-OV-Ce active sites fabricated through the atomic-level substitution of Cu and Zn into Ce-MOF precursor. The Ce-CuZn catalyst exhibits a high methanol selectivity of 71.1% and a space-time yield of methanol up to 400.3 g·kgcat-1·h-1 with excellent stability for 170 h at 260 °C, comparable to that of the state-of-the-art CuZnAl catalysts. Controlled experiments and DFT calculations confirm that the incorporation of Cu and Zn into CeO2 with abundant oxygen vacancies can facilitate H2 dissociation energetically and thus improve CO2 hydrogenation over the Ce-CuZn catalyst via formate intermediates. This work offers an atomic-level design strategy for constructing efficient multi-metal catalysts for methanol synthesis through precise control of active sites.

Sub-Nanometer Depth Profiling of Native Metal Oxide Layers Within Single Fixed-Angle X-Ray Photoelectron Spectra

Many metals form nanometer-thin self-passivating oxide layers upon exposure to the atmosphere, which affects a wide range of interfacial properties and shapes the way how metals interact with their environment. Such native oxide layers are commonly analyzed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), which provides a depth-resolved chemical state and compositional analysis either by ion etching or modeling of the electron escape depths. The latter is commonly used to calculate the average thickness of a native oxide layer. However, the measurement of concentration profiles at the oxide-metal interface remains challenging. Here, a simple and accessible approach for the depth profiling of ultrathin oxide layers within single fixed-angle XPS spectra is proposed. Instead of using only one peak in the spectrum, as is usually the case, all peaks within the energy range of a standard lab device are utilized, thus resembling energy-resolved XPS without the need for a synchrotron. New models that allow the calculation of depth-resolved concentration profiles at the oxide-metal interface are derived and tested, which are also valid for angular- and energy-resolved XPS. The proposed method not only improves the accuracy of earlier approaches but also paves the way for a more holistic understanding of the XPS spectrum.

A Data and DFT-Driven Framework for Predicting the Microstructure of Submonolayer Inverse Metal Oxide on Metal Catalysts

Metal oxides on metal (inverse) catalysts can selectively drive many important reactions. However, understanding the active site under experimentally relevant conditions is lacking. Herein, we introduce a computational framework for predicting atomic models of stable inverse catalysts and demonstrate it for WOx on Pt(553) and a Pt79 nanoparticle at variable WOx coverages. An evolutionary algorithm identifies a small (5%) subset of promising atomic configurations on which DFT simulations are performed. We predict a maximum coverage of ∼50% WOx on Pt(553), consisting of small clusters (tetramers and pentamers), which preferentially reside on the terrace, with their oxygen atoms interacting with the Pt step sites. Consistently, WOx does not lie on curved and undercoordinated metal sites of Pt nanoparticles. The oxide clusters prefer a partially reduced oxidation state. Theoretical EXAFS spectra for select configurations provide insights into interpreting experimental spectra of inverse catalysts. The framework applies to other catalysts.

Unveiling Atomic-Scale Product Selectivity at the Cocatalyst-TiO2 Interface Using X-Ray Techniques: Insights into Interface Reactivity

The microstructure at the interface between the cocatalyst and semiconductor plays a vital role in concentrating photo-induced carriers and reactants. However, observing the atomic arrangement of this interface directly using an electron microscope is challenging due to the coverings of the semiconductor and cocatalyst. To address this, multiple metal-semiconductor interfaces on three TiO2 crystal facets (M/TiO2 ─N, where M represents Ag, Au, and Pt, and N represents the 001, 010, and 101 single crystal facets). The identical surface atomic configuration of the TiO2 facets allowed us to investigate the evolution of the microstructure within these constructs using spectroscopies and DFT calculations. For the first time, they observed the transformation of saturated Ti6c ─O bonds into unsaturated Ti5c ─O and Ti6c ─O─Pt bonds on the TiO2 ─010 facet after loading Pt. This transformation have a direct impact on the selectivity of the resulting products, leading to the generation of CO and CH4 at the Ti6c ─O─Pt and Pt sites, respectively. These findings pinpoint the pivotal roles played by the atomic arrangement at the M/TiO2 ─N interfaces and provide valuable insights for the development of new methodologies using conventional lab-grade equipment.

Significance of Epitaxial Growth of PtO2 on Rutile TiO2 for Pt/TiO2 Catalysts

TiO2-supported Pt species have been widely applied in numerous critical reactions involving photo-, thermo-, and electrochemical-catalysis for decades. Manipulation of the state of the Pt species in Pt/TiO2 catalysts is crucial for fine-tuning their catalytic performance. Here, we report an interesting discovery showing the epitaxial growth of PtO2 atomic layers on rutile TiO2, potentially allowing control of the states of active Pt species in Pt/TiO2 catalysts. The presence of PtO2 atomic layers could modulate the geometric configuration and electronic state of the Pt species under reduction conditions, resulting in a spread of the particle shape and obtaining a Pt/PtO2/TiO2 structure with more positive valence of Pt species. As a result, such a catalyst exhibits exceptional electrocatalytic activity and stability toward hydrogen evolution reaction, while also promoting the thermocatalytic CO oxidation, surpassing the performance of the Pt/TiO2 catalyst with no epitaxial structure. This novel epitaxial growth of the PtO2 structure on rutile TiO2 in Pt/TiO2 catalysts shows its potential in the rational design of highly active and economical catalysts toward diverse catalytic reactions.

Renaissance of Strong Metal-Support Interactions

Strong metal-support interactions (SMSIs) have emerged as a significant and cutting-edge area of research in heterogeneous catalysis. They play crucial roles in modifying the chemisorption properties, interfacial structure, and electronic characteristics of supported metals, thereby exerting a profound influence on the catalytic properties. This Perspective aims to provide a comprehensive summary of the latest advancements and insights into SMSIs, with a focus on state-of-the-art in situ/operando characterization techniques. This overview also identifies innovative designs and applications of new types of SMSI systems in catalytic chemistry and highlights their pivotal role in enhancing catalytic performance, selectivity, and stability in specific cases. Particularly notable is the discovery of SMSI between active metals and metal carbides, which opens up a new era in the field of SMSI. Additionally, the strong interactions between atomically dispersed metals and supports are discussed, with an emphasis on the electronic effects of the support. The chemical nature of SMSI and its underlying catalytic mechanisms are also elaborated upon. It is evident that SMSI modification has become a powerful tool for enhancing catalytic performance in various catalytic applications.

Direct Operando Visualization of Metal Support Interactions Induced by Hydrogen Spillover During CO2 Hydrogenation

The understanding of catalyst active sites is a fundamental challenge for the future rational design of optimized and bespoke catalysts. For instance, the partial reduction of Ce4+ surface sites to Ce3+ and the formation of oxygen vacancies are critical for CO2 hydrogenation, CO oxidation, and the water gas shift reaction. Furthermore, metal nanoparticles, the reducible support, and metal support interactions are prone to evolve under reaction conditions; therefore a catalyst structure must be characterized under operando conditions to identify active states and deduce structure-activity relationships. In the present work, temperature-induced morphological and chemical changes in Ni nanoparticle-decorated mesoporous CeO2 by means of in situ quantitative multimode electron tomography and in situ heating electron energy loss spectroscopy, respectively, are investigated. Moreover, operando electron energy loss spectroscopy is employed using a windowed gas cell and reveals the role of Ni-induced hydrogen spillover on active Ce3+ site formation and enhancement of the overall catalytic performance.

Mapping Temperature Heterogeneities during Catalytic CO2 Methanation with Operando Luminescence Thermometry

Controlling and understanding reaction temperature variations in catalytic processes are crucial for assessing the performance of a catalyst material. Local temperature measurements are challenging, however. Luminescence thermometry is a promising remote-sensing tool, but it is cross-sensitive to the optical properties of a sample and other external parameters. In this work, we measure spatial variations in the local temperature on the micrometer length scale during carbon dioxide (CO2) methanation over a TiO2-supported Ni catalyst and link them to variations in catalytic performance. We extract local temperatures from the temperature-dependent emission of Y2O3:Nd3+ particles, which are mixed with the CO2 methanation catalyst. Scanning, where a near-infrared laser locally excites the emitting Nd3+ ions, produces a temperature map with a micrometer pixel size. We first designed the Y2O3:Nd3+ particles for optimal temperature precision and characterized cross-sensitivity of the measured signal to parameters other than temperature, such as light absorption by the blackened sample due to coke deposition at elevated temperatures. Introducing reaction gases causes a local temperature increase of the catalyst of on average 6-25 K, increasing with the reactor set temperature in the range of 550-640 K. Pixel-to-pixel variations in the temperature increase show a standard deviation of up to 1.5 K, which are attributed to local variations in the catalytic reaction rate. Mapping and understanding such temperature variations are crucial for the optimization of overall catalyst performance on the nano- and macroscopic scale.

The Role of Proton in High Power Density Vanadium Redox Flow Batteries

To design high-performance vanadium redox flow batteries (VRFBs), the influence of proton on electrocatalysts cannot be neglected considering the abundance of proton in a highly acidic electrolyte. Herein, the impact of proton on metal oxide-based electrocatalysts in VRFBs is investigated, and a proton-incorporating strategy is introduced for high power density VRFBs, in addition to unraveling the catalytic mechanism. This study discloses that the metal oxide-based electrocatalyst (WO3) undergoes in situ surface reconstruction by forming H0.5WO3 after incorporating proton. Experimental and theoretical results precisely disclose the catalytic active sites. The battery with H0.5WO3 designed by a proton-incorporating strategy achieves an attractive power density of 1.12 W cm-2 and sustains more than 900 cycles without an obvious decay, verifying the outstanding electrochemical performance of H0.5WO3. This work not only sheds light on the influence of proton on electrocatalysts for rational design of advanced VRFBs catalysts but also provides guidelines for the fundamental understanding of the reaction mechanism, which is highly important for the application of VRFBs.

Direct Evidence of Dynamic Metal Support Interactions in Co/TiO2 Catalysts by Near-Ambient Pressure X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy

The interaction between metal particles and the oxide support, the so-called metal-support interaction, plays a critical role in the performance of heterogenous catalysts. Probing the dynamic evolution of these interactions under reactive gas atmospheres is crucial to comprehending the structure-performance relationship and eventually designing new catalysts with enhanced properties. Cobalt supported on TiO2 (Co/TiO2) is an industrially relevant catalyst applied in Fischer-Tropsch synthesis. Although it is widely acknowledged that Co/TiO2 is restructured during the reaction process, little is known about the impact of the specific gas phase environment at the material's surface. The combination of soft and hard X-ray photoemission spectroscopies are used to investigate in situ Co particles supported on pure and NaBH4-modified TiO2 under H2, O2, and CO2:H2 gas atmospheres. The combination of soft and hard X-ray photoemission methods, which allows for simultaneous probing of the chemical composition of surface and subsurface layers, is one of the study's unique features. It is shown that under H2, cobalt particles are encapsulated below a stoichiometric TiO2 layer. This arrangement is preserved under CO2 hydrogenation conditions (i.e., CO2:H2), but changes rapidly upon exposure to O2. The pretreatment of the TiO2 support with NaBH4 affects the surface mobility and prevents TiO2 spillover onto Co particles.
