Abstract
Leishmaniasis is endemic in several areas of the world. It is a chronic protozoan disease transmitted through the bite of the Phlebotomus fly. Unusual localizations of visceral leishmaniasis are extremely rare and are described in immunocompromised patients. We present a case of a 73-year-old man, postliving nonrelated kidney transplant who complained of melena, fatigue, and weight loss. Gastroscopy showed a large ulcer at the lesser curvature of the stomach, and biopsies demonstrated severe ulceration with superimposed fungal organisms. Colonoscopy showed a polyp in the transverse colon, and histopathological examination revealed cytomegalovirus colitis with superimposed leishmaniasis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Leishmania infantum can be an opportunistic pathogen, with an immunocompromised status increasing the risk of converting asymptomatic infection to symptomatic visceral leishmaniasis (VL). VL has approximately 5% fatality rate; and HIV coinfection (AIDS/VL) increases this risk. We hypothesized that, relative to those with HIV alone, people with co-infection would have altered T cell activation which could impact on the risk of VL. METHODS A cross-sectional study was performed between 2014 and 2016 to determine the prevalence of L. infantum infection in people living with HIV (PLHIV) residing in Brazil (n = 1,372). Subsequent incident cases of VL were ascertained from a public health database through 2018 and from a cohort of families with VL. Immune status of 69 participants was evaluated and comparisons made between those with and without HIV, with latent or with active Leishmania infection and those without HIV but with active or resolved Leishmania or T cell hypersensitivity to Leishmania antigen and healthy control subjects. RESULTS A total of 24.2% of PLHIV had positive anti-IgG L. infantum antibodies. The relative risk of developing AIDS/VL was 2.27 (95% CI: 0.920 to 5.59; p = 0.07) to HIV/Leish coinfected subjects with positive leishmania serology compared to HIV subjects without leishmania serology. Poor adherence to antiretroviral therapy (p = 0.0008) or prior opportunistic infections (p = 0.0007) was associated with development of AIDS/VL in asymptomatic HIV/Leish. CD4+ and CD8+ T cells counts or viral load were similar between asymptomatic HIV/Leish and HIV subjects. However, activated CD8+CD38+HLA-DR+ T cells were higher in asymptomatic HIV/Leish than HIV. Likewise, senescent (CD57+) and PD1+ CD8+ T cells were higher in asymptomatic HIV/Leish than in AIDS/VL or HIV groups. CONCLUSION Although asymptomatic HIV/Leish subjects had CD4+ and CD8+ T cells similar to HIV alone, their CD8+T cells had increased activation and senescence which could contribute to risk of developing VL.

Abstract
Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is caused by Leishmania parasites. Ethiopia is one of the top ten countries with a high CL load, and Amhara National Regional State (ANRS) is one of the CL hotspot areas in the country. This study examined cutaneous leishmaniasis's epidemiology and clinical profiles in the ANRS region. It was conducted from April to October 2023 across eight Leishmaniasis Treatment Centres (LTCs). A data review was done from patients presenting to these centers between June 2018 and July 2023. Chi-square test and logistic regression were performed using SPSS-23. A total of 1729 patients with CL were recorded, resulting in an overall burden of 8.6 cases per 10,000 outpatients. Patients were from 112 districts, and most of them (71.1%) presented with localized cutaneous leishmaniasis (LCL). Approximately 12% of patients lived with the disease for over a year without treatment, while 13.2% of patients were multiple-time comers. Cutaneous leishmaniasis continues to be a significant public health issue in the ANRS region. Approximately onethird of CL patients exhibit the mucocutaneous leishmaniasis (MCL) clinical form. There has been a notable delay among CL patients in seeking diagnosis and treatment. It is essential to conduct large-scale community-based studies and studies focused on both traditional and modern treatment centers to accurately estimate the prevalence of CL in the region. Follow-up and molecular studies are crucial for enhancing our understanding of the clinical features of the disease. Furthermore, raising community awareness about CL prevention and control can help patients obtain early diagnosis and treatment.

Abstract
Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) poses a serious health threat, particularly when untreated, necessitating accurate diagnosis. While the gold-standard method involves identifying amastigotes in bone marrow aspirate (BMA), this procedure is invasive and occasionally contraindicated. Additionally, when VL is associated with HIV infection the serologies accuracies could be affected. This study aims to evaluate and compare diagnostic methods for VL in patients with and without HIV coinfection. We enrolled prospectively 127 consecutive adult VL patients, 48 (37.8%) of whom had HIV coinfection, in Brazil's Midwestern region, where VL is endemic. Parasitological examination served as the reference standard for accuracy analysis, with index tests including immunofluorescent antibody test (IFAT), immunochromatographic test with rK39 protein (rK39-ICT), and blood polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Specificity assessment involved 430 healthy blood donors from the same endemic area. Ninety-two patients had parasitologically confirmed VL. Among HIV-uninfected patients, rK39-ICT exhibited sensitivity comparable to PCR (93.6%; 95% CI: 83.6-100 vs. 97.8%; 95% CI: 93.6-99.2, respectively) and superior to IFAT (71.1%; 95% CI: 57.9-84.3). However, in HIV-infected patients, rK39-ICT sensitivity was notably lower than PCR (40.0%; 95% CI: 22.5-57.5 vs. 97.4%; 95% CI: 92.5-98.9) and similar to IFAT (67.5%; 95% CI: 52.9-82.0). Combining two serological tests in parallel identified 82.1% of parasitologically confirmed VL cases, with a negative likelihood ratio significantly lower than either test alone. No test achieved a specificity of 90%, and there were no significant differences in specificity observed among the index tests. The positivity rate of parasitological examination in the 127 VL patients was higher in HIV-infected compared to HIV-uninfected patients, 91.3% (95% CI: 83.2-99.4) versus 67.6% (95% CI: 56.9-78.3), respectively. These findings underscore the necessity of accounting for HIV infection when choosing VL diagnostic methods. Although rK39-ICT provides reliable results in HIV-uninfected patients, BMA examination remains crucial for accurate diagnosis in individuals with HIV/AIDS. In cases where bone marrow aspiration is contraindicated, employing IFAT and rK39-ICT in parallel could be considered, as the occurrence of both positive results is uncommon in healthy individuals from endemic areas.

Abstract
Surveillance and sustained control of visceral leishmaniasis (VL) require reliable serodiagnostic tools. rK39, the gold standard antigen for VL diagnosis, is limited by its documented poor sensitivity in certain endemic regions, such as East Africa, and by the longevity of its antibodies, making it difficult to distinguish active from cured infections. In a recent publication in mBio, Roberts et al. (A. J. Roberts, H.B. Ong, S. Clare, C. Brandt, et al., mBio 15:e00859-24, 2024, https://doi.org/10.1128/mbio.00859-24) identified new immunogenic Leishmania candidates in dogs and humans. In dogs, combined antigens LdBPK_290790.1 + LdBPK_362700.1 (D4 +D46) distinguished symptomatic from asymptomatic infections. For humans, LdBPK_323600.1 (D36) antigen produced short-lived antibodies and performed well in patient cohorts from Bangladesh and Ethiopia, but not Kenya. This study adds promising new candidates to our serodiagnostic toolbox but highlights the need for more antigen discovery studies that may have to be focused on regional performance.

Abstract
A serological screening was conducted to detect IgG antibodies against Leishmania infantum (L. infantum) in newly diagnosed human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) patients in Greece. The study also examined potential risk factors and the agreement of commercially available serological methods. IgG antibodies against L. infantum were detected using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), indirect immunofluorescence antibody test (IFAT), and Western blot (WB). Out of 155 samples, 14 (9.0%) tested positive for IgG antibodies against L. infantum using at least two methods. Statistical analysis showed substantial agreement between WB and IFAT methods (Cohen's kappa = 0.75) but moderate overall agreement among the three methods (Fleiss' kappa = 0.42). Additionally, HIV+ intravenous drug users faced 3.55 times (p = 0.025) higher risk of testing positive for L. infantum IgG, positing that anthroponotic transmission between these patients is a plausible hypothesis based on existing literature. Non-invasive and cost-effective techniques are preferred to detect asymptomatic infections, and leishmaniasis screening should be conducted immediately after HIV diagnosis in endemic regions to enable prophylactic treatment for leishmaniasis in addition to antiretroviral therapy. To maximize sensitivity, performing at least two different serological methods for each patient is recommended.

Abstract
Drug resistance threatens the effective control of infections, including parasitic diseases such as leishmaniases. Neutrophils are essential players in antimicrobial control, but their role in drug-resistant infections is poorly understood. Here, we evaluated human neutrophil response to clinical parasite strains having distinct natural drug susceptibility. We found that Leishmania antimony drug resistance significantly altered the expression of neutrophil genes, some of them transcribed by specific neutrophil subsets. Infection with drug-resistant parasites increased the expression of detoxification pathways and reduced the production of cytokines. Among these, the chemokine CCL3 was predominantly impacted, which resulted in an impaired ability of neutrophils to attract myeloid cells. Moreover, decreased myeloid recruitment when CCL3 levels are reduced was confirmed by blocking CCL3 in a mouse model. Collectively, these findings reveal that the interplay between naturally drug-resistant parasites and neutrophils modulates the infected skin immune microenvironment, revealing a key role of neutrophils in drug resistance.

Abstract
Viral co-infections, in which a host is infected with multiple viruses simultaneously, are common in the human population. Human viral co-infections can lead to complex interactions between the viruses and the host immune system, affecting the clinical outcome and posing challenges for treatment. Understanding the types, mechanisms, impacts, and identification methods of human viral co-infections is crucial for the prevention and control of viral diseases. In this review, we first introduce the significance of studying human viral co-infections and summarize the current research progress and gaps in this field. We then classify human viral co-infections into four types based on the pathogenic properties and species of the viruses involved. Next, we discuss the molecular mechanisms of viral co-infections, focusing on virus-virus interactions, host immune responses, and clinical manifestations. We also summarize the experimental and computational methods for the identification of viral co-infections, emphasizing the latest advances in high-throughput sequencing and bioinformatics approaches. Finally, we highlight the challenges and future directions in human viral co-infection research, aiming to provide new insights and strategies for the prevention, control, diagnosis, and treatment of viral diseases. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the current knowledge and future perspectives on human viral co-infections and underscores the need for interdisciplinary collaboration to address this complex and important topic.

Abstract
Leishmania infantum is the etiological agent of zoonotic visceral leishmaniasis (ZVL). The disease is endemic in Central and South America, Central and South East Asia, and the Mediterranean basin. Dogs are the main reservoir, with an estimated prevalence of approximately 2.5 million dogs in Southern Europe. Current treatments cause side effects, disease recurrence, and drug resistance. Therefore, the development of vaccines against canine leishmaniasis is necessary. We have generated a DNA vaccine based on the non-replicative antibiotic resistance marker-free plasmid vector pPAL that contains the encoding gene for the L. infantum activated protein kinase C receptor analog (LACK). Homologous pPAL-LACK prime-boost intranasal administration confers efficacious protection in Beagle dogs with a reduction of clinical signs and a statistically significant reduction of the parasite burden in the bone marrow of more than 90% of dogs after experimental infection with highly infective promastigotes. This DNA vaccine elicits a robust cellular immune response skewed towards the Th1 profile.

Abstract
Leishmania infantum is endemic in Morocco, and it causes both visceral (VL) and cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL). In this study, the multilocus sequence typing (MLST) approach was used to investigate the phylogeny and population structure of Leishmania infantum strains isolated from CL and VL patients and the canine reservoir in different leishmaniasis endemic foci in Morocco. For this purpose, eight loci (pgm, alat, me, fh, g6pd, pgd, gpi and cytb) were amplified in 40 samples, out of which 31 were successfully sequenced. The genetic diversity analysis detected a high degree of intraspecific genetic variability among the studied strains. The phylogenetic and the haplotype analyses showed that most of the strains from the same geographical areas clustered together. The recombination among Leishmania infantum strains was revealed through a splits tree analysis and the number of recombination events. Moreover, the assessment of the gene flow between Leishmania infantum and Leishmania tropica through phylogenetic analysis and haplotype diversity in two endemic foci where the two species were sympatric showed no genetic exchange between the two species.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Asymptomatic visceral leishmaniasis (VL) infection is a risk for transfusion safety. Leukoreduction has been an alternative for the prevention of some blood-borne diseases, including VL. This study aimed to evaluate the role of leukoreduction of cellular blood components as a control measure for transfusional VL transmission. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS A total of 161 polytransfused patients with non-leukoreduced blood components (HNL), 95 polytransfused with leukoreduced blood components (LH), and 202 non-transfused (NT) from endemic regions for VL and with a similar epidemiological profile. The detection of antibodies against VL was performed by ELISA and the presence of the parasite was investigated by real-time PCR. Statistical significance was defined as p < .05. RESULTS When comparing three groups, ELISA results were statistically significant (p = .0065). The residual analysis of ELISA showed statistically significant for the HNL group compared to the general group (p = .002; OR: 5.6; CI: 1.7-25.8), demonstrating that individuals who received non-leukoreduced transfusions are five times more likely to acquire Leishmania infantum infection than the general. DISCUSSION Higher prevalence in the group with HNL and low prevalence in those who received LH, similar to NT patients, highlight the risk of transfusional VL transmission and reinforce the role of leukoreduction in its prevention.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is an endemic parasitic disease in Latin America, and its clinical picture is aggravated in coinfections with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). The objective of this study was to investigate clinical factors and laboratory variables associated with VL relapse and death in VL/HIV coinfected patients. METHODS A prospective longitudinal study was conducted from January 2013 to July 2020 among 169 patients coinfected with VL and HIV. The outcomes investigated were the occurrence of VL relapse and death. Chi-square test, Mann-Whitney test and logistic regression models were used for statistical analysis. RESULTS The occurrence rates were 41.4% for VL relapse and 11.2% for death. Splenomegaly and adenomegaly were associated with the increased risk of VL relapse. Patients with VL relapse had higher levels of urea (p = .005) and creatinine (p < .001). Patients who died had lower red blood cell counts (p = .012), hemoglobin (p = .017) and platelets (p < .001). The adjusted model showed that antiretroviral therapy for more than 6 months was associated with a decrease in VL relapse, and adenomegaly was associated with an increase in VL relapse. In addition, edema, dehydration, poor general health status, and paleness were associated with an increase in hospital death. CONCLUSION The findings suggest that adenomegaly, antiretroviral therapy, and renal abnormalities can be associated with VL relapse, while hematological abnormalities, and clinical manifestations like paleness, and edema can be associated with an increased odds of hospital death. Abstract
Background Leishmania infantum is an opportunistic parasitic infection. An immunocompromised state increases the risk of converting asymptomatic infection to symptomatic visceral leishmaniasis (VL), which has a ~5% fatality rate even with treatment. HIV coinfection increases the risk of death from VL. Methods A cross-sectional study was performed between 2014 and 2016 to determine the prevalence of L. infantum infection in HIV positive subjects residing in the state of Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil (n=1,372) and of these a subgroup of subjects were followed longitudinally. Subsequent incident cases of VL were ascertained from a public health database through 2018. A subgroup (n=69) of the cross-sectional study subjects was chosen to assess immune status (T cell activation, senescence, exhaustion) and outcome. The data were compared between asymptomatic HIV+/L. infantum+ (HIV/Leish), symptomatic visceral leishmaniasis (VL), recovered VL, DTH+ (Delayed-Type Hypersensitivity response - Leishmanin skin test), AIDS/VL, HIV+ only (HIV+), and Non-HIV/Non L. infantum infection (control subjects). Results The cross-sectional study showed 24.2% of HIV+ subjects had positive anti-IgG Leishmania antibodies. After 3 years, 2.4% (8 of 333) of these HIV/Leish coinfected subjects developed AIDS/VL, whereas 1.05% (11 of 1,039) of HIV subjects with negative leishmania serology developed AIDS/VL. Poor adherence to antiretroviral therapy (p=0.0008) or prior opportunistic infections (p=0.0007) was associated with development of AIDS/VL. CD4+ (p=0.29) and CD8+ (p=0.38) T cells counts or viral load (p=0.34) were similar between asymptomatic HIV/Leish and HIV subjects. However, activated CD8+CD38+HLA-DR+ T cells were higher in asymptomatic HIV/Leish than HIV group. Likewise, senescent (CD57+) or exhausted (PD1+) CD8+ T cells were higher in asymptomatic HIV/Leish than in AIDS/VL or HIV groups. Conclusion Although asymptomatic HIV/Leish subjects had normal and similar CD4+ and CD8+ T cells counts, their CD8+T cells had increased activation, senescence, and exhaustion, which could contribute to risk of developing VL.

Abstract
Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) and HIV co-infection (VL/HIV) has emerged as a significant public health problem in Ethiopia, with up to 30% of patients with VL co-infected with HIV. These patients suffer from recurrent VL relapses and increased mortality. Those with a previous history of VL relapses (recurrent VL/HIV) experience increased VL relapses as compared to patients with HIV presenting with their first episode of VL (primary VL/HIV). Our aim was to identify drivers that account for the higher rate of VL relapses in patients with recurrent VL/HIV (n = 28) as compared to primary VL/HIV (n = 21). Our results show that the relapse-free survival in patients with recurrent VL/HIV was shorter, that they had higher parasite load, lower weight gain, and lower recovery of all blood cell lineages. Their poorer prognosis was characterized by lower production of IFN-gamma, lower CD4+ T cell counts, and higher expression of programmed cell death protein 1 (PD1) on T cells.

Abstract
The Oceanimonas sp. BPMS22-derived protein protease inhibitor (PPI) has been proven to shift macrophages towards an inflammatory state and reduce Leishmania donovani infection in vitro and in vivo. The current study explored and validated the mechanistic aspects of the PPI and Toll-like receptor (TLR) interaction. The PPI exhibited the upregulation of TLR2, TLR4, and TLR6 during treatment which was proven to orchestrate parasite clearance effectively. An in silico study confirmed the high interaction with TLR4 and PPI. Immune blotting confirmed the significant upregulation of TLR4 in macrophages irrespective of L. donovani infection. Pharmacological inhibition and immune blot study confirmed the involvement of the PPI in TLR4-mediated phosphorylation of p38 MAPK and dephosphorylation of ERK1/2, repolarizing to pro-inflammatory macrophage state against experimental visceral leishmaniasis. In addition, in TLR4 knockdown condition, PPI treatment failed to diminish M2 phenotypical markers (CD68, Fizz1, Ym1, CD206, and MSR-2) and anti-inflammatory cytokines (IL-4, IL-10, and TGF-β). Simultaneously, the PPI failed to upregulate the M1 phenotypical markers and pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-1β, IL-6, IL-12, and IFN-γ) (p < 0.001) during the TLR4 knockdown condition. In the absence of TLR4, the PPI also failed to reduce the parasite load and T-cell proliferation and impaired the delayed-type hypersensitivity response. The absence of pro-inflammatory cytokines was observed during a co-culture study with PPI-treated macrophages (in the TLR4 knockdown condition) with day 10 T-cell obtained from L. donovani-infected mice. This study supports the immunotherapeutic potential of the PPI as it interacted with TLR4 and promoted macrophage repolarization (M2-M1) to restrict the L. donovani parasite burden and helps in the mounting immune response against experimental visceral leishmaniasis.

Abstract
Parasitic infections are more frequently observed in immunosuppressed cases, such as those infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Furthermore, compared to immunocompetent cases, a more severe clinical course is observed in the immunosuppressed patient group. HIV-positive individuals have increased pathogenicity of parasites and may exhibit a wide range of clinical symptoms of varying severity that may result in mortality. Visceral leishmaisis (VL) is a vector-borne disease and an important opportunistic infection seen in HIV/AIDS cases, most notably in Southern Europe and Africa, where both infections are endemic. Several parasites namely toxoplasmosis, cryptosporidiosis, isosporiasis, cyclosporiasis, amebiasis, giardiasis, plasmodium, and strongyloidiasis are infections posing significant risk factors for these patient groups. In this study, visceral leishmaniasis was investigated serologically in serum samples and parasitic infections were analyzed by conventional methods in fecal samples from HIV-positive cases.
5 of the 42 cases included in the study were female. The mean age of these cases was 38.7 years (19-66). Blastocystis spp was detected in 5 fecal samples obtained from HIV-positive cases. The rK39 dipstick test with serum samples yielded a very weak band in one case, while none of the other tests yielded a positive band.
As a result, the regional prevalence of these latent infections, which can be subclinical in HIV-positive patients, is important to know. However, the literature lacks sufficient data on the situation in Turkey. In this study, the prevalence of enteric parasitic infections in people with HIV infection in our region was found to be low and VL was not detected.

Abstract
Dogs are the most important reservoir of Leishmania infantum, the causal agent of visceral leishmaniasis in Brazil. Although lymphoid tissue is the most important biological tissue where amastigotes can be found, this paper describes the presence of L. infantum DNA in the milk of a lactating naturally infected female dog. This finding suggests the need for further studies to elucidate whether breastfeeding can be a route of infection.

Abstract
The genus Leishmania comprises a wide range of species, some of which are pathogenic to humans and each of which has a different tissue preference, resulting in one of the three clinical forms of human leishmaniasis: visceral, cutaneous, or mucocutaneous. Although, all pathogenic species are deposited intradermally in the mammalian host upon an infectious sand fly bite, only the viscerotropic strains can leave the skin and reach the internal organs. We assume that Leishmania tissue tropism is not only the result of Leishmania genetic determinism but is also governed by the interaction of the parasite with different vectorial and human host elements. To shed light on these elements and key steps determining the course of the infection, we describe throughout this review the disease's progression from the early stages of infection taking place in the skin to the late stages succeeding in the parasite's visceral dissemination. Hence, we address the question of Leishmania tropism, through providing relevant hypotheses and answers gathered from the literature.

Abstract
Antimony has been known and used since ancient times, but its applications have increased significantly during the last two centuries. Aside from its few medical applications, it also has industrial applications, acting as a flame retardant and a catalyst. Geologically, native antimony is rare, and it is mostly found in sulfide ores. The main ore minerals of antimony are antimonite and jamesonite. The extensive mining and use of antimony have led to its introduction into the biosphere, where it can be hazardous, depending on its bioavailability and absorption. Detailed studies exist both from active and abandoned mining sites, and from urban settings, which document the environmental impact of antimony pollution and its impact on human physiology. Despite its evident and pronounced toxicity, it has also been used in some drugs, initially tartar emetics and subsequently antimonials. The latter are used to treat tropical diseases and their therapeutic potential for leishmaniasis means that they will not be soon phased out, despite the fact the antimonial resistance is beginning to be documented. The mechanisms by which antimony is introduced into human cells and subsequently excreted are still the subject of research; their elucidation will enable us to better understand antimony toxicity and, hopefully, to improve the nature and delivery method of antimonial drugs.

Abstract
Leishmania parasites cause outstanding levels of morbidity and mortality in many developing countries in tropical and subtropical regions. Numerous gene expression profiling studies have been performed comparing different Leishmania species’ life-cycles and stage forms in regard to their distinct infective ability. Based on expression patterns, homology to human orthologues, in silico HLA-binding predictions, and annotated functions, we were able to select several vaccine candidates which are currently under study. One of these candidates is the Leishmania infantum ubiquitin-conjugating enzyme E2 (LiUBC1), whose relative levels, subcellular location, in vitro infectivity in the U937 myeloid human cell model, and protection levels in Syrian hamsters against L. infantum infection were studied herein. LiUBC1 displays a low level of similarity with the mammalian orthologs and relevant structure differences, such as the C-terminal domain, which is absent in the human ortholog. LiUBC1 is present in highly infective promastigotes. Knock-in parasites overexpressing the enzyme increased their infectivity, according to in vitro experiments. Syrian hamsters immunized with the recombinant LiUBC1 protein did not show any parasite burden in the spleen, unlike the infection control group. The IFN-γ transcript levels in splenocytes were significantly higher in the LiUBC1 immunized group. Therefore, LiUBC1 induced partial protection against L. infantum in the Syrian hamster model.

Abstract
Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) has emerged as a clinically important opportunistic infection in HIV patients, as VL/HIV co-infected patients suffer from frequent VL relapse. Here, we follow cohorts of VL patients with or without HIV in Ethiopia. By the end of the study, 78.1% of VL/HIV-but none of the VL patients-experience VL relapse. Despite a clinically defined cure, VL/HIV patients maintain higher parasite loads, lower BMI, hepatosplenomegaly, and pancytopenia. We identify three immunological markers associated with VL relapse in VL/HIV patients: (1) failure to restore antigen-specific production of IFN-γ, (2) persistently lower CD4+ T cell counts, and (3) higher expression of PD1 on CD4+ and CD8+ T cells. We show that these three markers, which can be measured in primary hospital settings in Ethiopia, combine well in predicting VL relapse. The use of our prediction model has the potential to improve disease management and patient care.

Abstract
Visceral Leishmaniasis and HIV-AIDS coinfection (VL/HIV) is considered a life-threatening pathology when undiagnosed and untreated, due to the immunosuppression caused by both diseases. Serological tests largely used for the VL diagnosis include the direct agglutination test (DAT), ELISA and immunochromatographic (ICT) assays. For VL diagnosis in HIV infections, different studies have shown that the use of the DAT assay facilitates the VL diagnosis in co-infected patients, since the performance of the most widely used ELISA and ICT tests, based on the recombinant protein rK39, are much less efficient in HIV co-infections. In this scenario, alternative recombinant antigens may help the development of new serological diagnostic methods which may improve the VL diagnosis for the co-infection cases. This work aimed to evaluate the use of the recombinant Lci2 antigen, related to, but antigenically more diverse than rK39, for VL diagnosis in co-infected sera through ELISA assays. A direct comparison between recombinant Lci2 and rK39 was thus carried out. The two proteins were first tested using indirect ELISA with sera from VL afflicted individuals and healthy controls, with similar performances. They were then tested with two different sets of VL/HIV co-infected cases and a significant drop in performance, for one of these groups, was observed for rK39 (32% sensitivity), but not for Lci2 (98% sensitivity). In fact, an almost perfect agreement (Kappa: 0.93) between the Lci2 ELISA and DAT was observed for the coinfected VL/HIV patients. Lci2 then has the potential to be used as a new tool for the VL diagnosis of VL/HIV co-infections.

Abstract
Leishmaniasis is a chronic disease caused by flagellate protozoa of the genus Leishmania. It is a global disease, but most cases are seen in South America, the Mediterranean, and some areas of Asia and Africa. The 3 main types of leishmaniasis are cutaneous (the most common), mucocutaneous, and visceral (the most severe). Visceral leishmaniasis is also known as kala-azar. Leishmaniasis is diagnosed by demonstrating the presence of Leishmania amastigotes in clinical specimens using direct microscopic examination or molecular analysis. Various treatments exist, although the evidence supporting the options available for cutaneous leishmaniasis is weak. Both the classical presentation of leishmaniasis and our management of the disease have changed in recent decades because of acquired immune deficiency caused by conditions such as human immunodeficiency infection or the use of tumor necrosis factor inhibitors.

Abstract
Leishmaniasis is a transmissible disease caused by Leishmania protozoa. Spain is endemic for both visceral and cutaneous leishmaniasis, the autochthonous aetiological agent being Leishmania infantum. Around the world, the L. donovani complex is associated with visceral symptoms, while any species of the Leishmania or Viannia subgenera affecting human can produce tegumentary forms. In a context of growing numbers of imported cases, associated with globalisation, the aim of this study was to analyse the aetiological evolution of human tegumentary leishmaniasis in a region of Spain (Catalonia). Fifty-six Leishmania strains, isolated from 1981 to 2018, were analysed using MLEE, gene sequencing (hsp70, rpoIILS, fh and ITS2) and MALDI-TOF. The utility of these different analytical methods was compared. The results showed an increase in leishmaniasis over the two last decades, particularly imported cases, which represented 39% of all cases studied. Leishmania infantum, L. major, L. tropica, L. braziliensis, L. guyanensis and L. panamensis were identified. The combination of molecular and enzymatic methods allowed the identification of 29 different strain types (A to AC). Strain diversity was higher in L. (Viannia), whilst the different L. major types were relatable with geo-temporal data. Among the autochthonous cases, type C prevailed throughout the studied period (39%). Minor types generally appeared within a short time interval. While all the techniques provided identical identification at the species complex level, MALDI-TOF and rpoIILS or fh sequencing would be the most suitable identification tools for clinical practice, and the tandem hsp70-ITS2 could substitute MLEE in the epidemiological field.

Abstract
Leishmaniasis, a chronic and persistent intracellular protozoal infection caused by many different species within the genus Leishmania, is an unfamiliar disease to most North American providers. Clinical presentations may include asymptomatic and symptomatic visceral leishmaniasis (so-called Kala-azar), as well as cutaneous or mucosal disease. Although cutaneous leishmaniasis (caused by Leishmania mexicana in the United States) is endemic in some southwest states, other causes for concern include reactivation of imported visceral leishmaniasis remotely in time from the initial infection, and the possible long-term complications of chronic inflammation from asymptomatic infection. Climate change, the identification of competent vectors and reservoirs, a highly mobile populace, significant population groups with proven exposure history, HIV, and widespread use of immunosuppressive medications and organ transplant all create the potential for increased frequency of leishmaniasis in the U.S. Together, these factors could contribute to leishmaniasis emerging as a health threat in the U.S., including the possibility of sustained autochthonous spread of newly introduced visceral disease. We summarize recent data examining the epidemiology and major risk factors for acquisition of cutaneous and visceral leishmaniasis, with a special focus on implications for the United States, as well as discuss key emerging issues affecting the management of visceral leishmaniasis.

Abstract
Diagnosis of a first-time visceral leishmaniasis (VL) infection in Ethiopia is established by use of a rapid diagnostic test (RDT) detecting antibodies against rK39, direct agglutination test (DAT) and microscopy according to the national algorithm. The performance of individual tests and algorithm is variable and depends on several factors, one being HIV status. Limited data are available on the performance of tests in VL-HIV coinfected patients. Assessment of the performance of DAT (ITM-A), rK39 ELISA (Serion) and six RDT (Onsite Leishmania Ab CTK, Antigen ICT Xinjier, IT Leish Biorad, Kalazar Detect Inbios, rK39 IgG1 Coris, rk28 IgG1 Coris) for the diagnosis of VL was done on a panel of 91 stored serum and plasma samples of 'first-episode' suspected VL patients, with HIV coinfection (n = 51) and without (n = 40). A combined reference standard was used: either positive microscopy on tissue aspirates, or in case of negative microscopy, positive PCR results on the aspirate slide. Additionally, endemic healthy controls (n = 20), non-endemic controls (n = 10) and patients with confirmed malaria infection (n = 10) were tested for specificity evaluation. Sensitivities ranged from 69.2% for DAT (applied cut-off ≥ 1/3200) to 92.2% for the Onsite RDT, whereas specificities ranged from 20.0% for Kalazar Antigen ICT to 100% for IT Leish and rK39 IgG1. Sensitivities from all assays decreased upon stratification according to HIV status but was only significantly different for rK39 Serion ELISA (p-value 0.0084) and the Onsite RDT (p-value 0.0159). In conclusion, performance of commercially available assays for VL on samples from Northern-Ethiopian patients varied widely with a substantial decrease in sensitivity in the VL-HIV coinfected group. Clear guidelines on minimal performance criteria of individual tests and algorithms are needed, as well as which reference standard should be used to determine the performance.

Abstract
The emergence of drug resistance is a major concern for combating against Cutaneous Leishmaniasis, a neglected tropical disease affecting 98 countries including India. Miltefosine is the only oral drug available for the disease and Miltefosine transporter proteins play a pivotal role in the emergence of drug-resistant Leishmania major. The cause of resistance is less accumulation of drug inside the parasite either by less uptake of the drug due to a decrease in the activity of P4ATPase-CDC50 complex or by increased efflux of the drug by P-glycoprotein (P-gp, an ABC transporter). In this paper, we are trying to allosterically modulate the behavior of resistant parasite (L. major) towards its sensitivity for the existing drug (Miltefosine, a phosphatidylcholine analog). We have used computational approaches to deal with the conservedness of the proteins and apparently its three-dimensional structure prediction through ab initio modeling. Long scale membrane-embedded molecular dynamics simulations were carried out to study the structural interaction and stability. Parasite-specific motifs of these proteins were identified based on the machine learning technique, against which a peptide library was designed. The protein-peptide docking shows good binding energy of peptides Pg5F, Pg8F and PC2 with specific binding to the motifs. These peptides were tested both in vitro and in vivo, where Pg5F in combination with PC2 showed 50-60% inhibition in resistant L. major's promastigote and amastigote forms and 80-90% decrease in parasite load in mice. We posit a model system wherein the data provide sufficient impetus for being novel therapeutics in order to counteract the drug resistance phenotype in Leishmania parasites.

Abstract
Background There is little information about the frequency of Leishmania infection in asymptomatic people living with HIV (PLWH) and about the performance of laboratory diagnostic methods in coinfected patients in Latin America. The main objective of this study is to evaluate the frequency of Leishmania spp. infection in HIV-infected patients living in an urban area in Brazil. Methods To detect Leishmania infection, diagnostic tests were performed to detect anti-Leishmania antibodies (ELISA using Leptomonas seymouri antigens; ELISA using rK39 antigens; ELISA using rK28 antigens; indirect fluorescent-antibody test (IFAT); direct agglutination test (DAT)) and Leishmania DNA (polymerase chain reaction (PCR) with the target genes kDNA and ITS-1). Results The frequency of at least one positive test was 15%. For ELISA using Leptomonas antigens and IFAT, there was an association between CD4+ T lymphocyte counts and test positivity, with a higher positivity of these tests in more immunosuppressed patients (CD4+ T cell count < 200/mm3). Conclusions According to our data, there was a high prevalence of Leishmania spp. infections in this population living with HIV. Although there is the possibility of cross-reaction, some tests that are considered highly specific for the diagnosis of Leishmania infection were positive. There was also an association between the positivity of some tests studied and lower values of CD4+ T lymphocytes.

Abstract
This review describes and appraises a novel protein-based antigen detection test for visceral leishmaniasis (VL). The test detects in patient’s urine six proteins from Leishmania infantum (chagasi) and Leishmania donovani, the etiological agents of VL. The gold standard test for VL is microscopic observation of the parasites in aspirates from spleen, liver, or bone marrow (and lymph node for dogs). Culture of the parasites or detection of their DNA in these aspirates are also commonly used. Serological tests are available but they cannot distinguish patients with active VL from either healthy subjects exposed to the parasites or from subjects who had a successful VL treatment. An antigen detection test based on the agglutination of anti-leishmania carbohydrates antibody coated latex beads has been described. However, the results obtained with this carbohydrate-based test have been conflicting. Using mass spectrometry, we discovered six L. infantum/L. donovani proteins excreted in the urine of VL patients and used them as markers for the development of a robust mAb-based antigen (protein) detection test. The test is assembled in a multiplexed format to simultaneously detect all six markers. Its initial clinical validation showed a sensitivity of 93% and specificity of 100% for VL diagnosis.

Abstract
Leishmaniasis is a neglected tropical disease with two main clinical forms: cutaneous and visceral leishmaniasis. Diagnosis of leishmaniasis is still a challenge, concerning the detection and correct identification of the species of the parasite, mainly in endemic areas where the absence of appropriate resources is still a problem. Most accessible methods for diagnosis, particularly in these areas, do not include the identification of each one of more than 20 species responsible for the disease. Here, we summarize the main methods used for the detection and identification of leishmaniasis that can be performed by demonstration of the parasite in biological samples from the patient through microscopic examination, by in vitro culture or animal inoculation; by molecular methods through the detection of parasite DNA; or by immunological methods through the detection of parasite antigens that may be present in urine or through the detection of specific antibodies against the parasite. Potential new methods that can be applied for laboratory diagnosis of leishmaniasis are also discussed.

Abstract
AIMS The aim of the present study was to assess serum cytokine and miRNA expression in visceral leishmaniasis-HIV (VL-HIV) co-infection and HIV mono-infection. METHODS AND RESULTS We analysed 113 serum samples from HIV patients in areas endemic for leishmaniasis. The diagnosis of VL was confirmed in 65 of these 113 samples. The VL-HIV and HIV groups presented significant differences regarding haemoglobin level (P < .0001), lymphocyte count (P = .0444), white blood cell count (P = .0108), weight loss (P = .0310), HIV load (P < .0001) and CD4+ T-lymphocytes count (P = .0003). Levels of IL-6 and IL-10, IFN-γ and IL-6, IFN-γ and IL-10, TNF and IL-2 were positively correlated in VL-HIV co-infection, indicating higher serum levels of TNF and IL-4 (P < .0001). In addition, miR-182 expression was found to be significantly higher in HIV (P = .009), miR-210 exhibited no statistically significant difference between groups, and nonexpression of miR-122 was found in both groups. CONCLUSION Together, TNF, IL-4 and miR-182 may represent circulatory biomarkers of VL-HIV co-infection.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to explore Leishmania infantum epidemiology through a One Health approach that promotes a better estimation of leishmaniasis burden and a deeper understanding of the spatial distribution of the key actors of the parasite life cycle (vectors, reservoirs and humans). We conducted a 14-year mixed retrospective and prospective study of leishmaniasis cases in an endemic area in southern Spain (Granada province), to estimate the human incidence and its association with the vector presence, cryptic leishmaniasis rates and canine leishmaniasis prevalence. We found an annual linear increase in the incidence that cannot be fully explained by active case surveillance and the improvement of PCR diagnostic techniques. 49.4% of cases were not reported to the surveillance system. Approximately half of the human cases correspond to the visceral form that occurred more frequently in men; cutaneous, mucosal and cryptic forms were also detected. Leishmaniasis is no longer a disease of young children, accounting for a quarter of immunocompetent patients and most infected people remained asymptomatic. Human and canine leishmaniasis, cryptic or symptomatic, are present in the whole province, where there is a medium/high risk of the presence of Phlebotomus perniciosus, the main vector. We found association between the incidence of human leishmaniasis and the presence of the vector, but not with the prevalence of canine leishmaniasis and cryptic human leishmaniasis. A potential hot spot was also found, where high leishmaniasis incidence may be associated to the involvement of host species other than dogs.

Abstract
A series of new 2,4-bis[(substituted-aminomethyl)phenyl]quinoline, 1,3-bis[(substituted-aminomethyl)phenyl]isoquinoline, and 2,4-bis[(substituted-aminomethyl)phenyl]quinazoline derivatives was designed, synthesised, and evaluated in vitro against three protozoan parasites (Plasmodium falciparum, Leishmania donovani, and Trypanosoma brucei brucei). Biological results showed antiprotozoal activity with IC50 values in the µM range. In addition, the in vitro cytotoxicity of these original molecules was assessed with human HepG2 cells. The quinoline 1c was identified as the most potent antimalarial candidate with a ratio of cytotoxic to antiparasitic activities of 97 against the P. falciparum CQ-sensitive strain 3D7. The quinazoline 3h was also identified as the most potent trypanosomal candidate with a selectivity index (SI) of 43 on T. brucei brucei strain. Moreover, as the telomeres of the parasites P. falciparum and Trypanosoma are possible targets of this kind of nitrogen heterocyclic compounds, we have also investigated stabilisation of the Plasmodium and Trypanosoma telomeric G-quadruplexes by our best compounds through FRET melting assays.

Abstract
The present study evaluates the efficacy of sodium stibogluconate (SSG) co-loaded with ketoconazole (KTZ) in nano-elastic liposomes (NELs) for the topical treatment of cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL). SSG-KTZ co-loaded NELs were developed and assessed for various physicochemical properties and anti-leishmanial potential. The optimized nano-vesicles have an average size of 212.8 ± 3.1 nm and entrapment efficiency of 61.2 ± 2.9%. SSG-KTZ co-loaded NELs displayed 5.37-fold higher skin permeation of SSG as compared to drug solution. SSG and KTZ displayed a synergistic interaction and flow cytometry revealed enhanced killing of DsRed Leishmania mexicana in infected macrophages. In-vitro and in-vivo anti-leishmanial studies indicated a 10.67-fold lower IC50 value and a 35.33-fold reduced parasitic burden as compared with plain SSG solution, respectively. SSG-KTZ co-loaded NELs were found to be a promising approach for the topical treatment of CL.

Abstract
Following the emergence of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), the number of visceral leishmaniasis-HIV (VL-HIV) coinfections has increased worldwide, mainly in Brazil. The development of clinical forms of VL can be influenced by nutritional status, age, and host genetic factors, which are important variables determining susceptibility to disease. There are no studies with a candidate gene approach assayed directly in the VL-HIV-coinfected population. Herein, we determined and analyzed the associations of SLC11A1, LECT2, CCL1, CCL16, and IL4 genetic polymorphisms with susceptibility to VL-HIV coinfection in Northeastern Brazil. We analyzed 309 DNA samples extracted from the peripheral blood of HIV patients, and clinical and hematological data were collected from medical records. The diagnosis of VL was confirmed in 110 out of 309 patients; genotyping was carried out by TaqMan assays afterwards. Our results confirmed the association between the SLC11A1 polymorphism (rs3731865) and VL-HIV coinfection (p = 0.0206, OR 1.8126, 95% CI 1.1050-2.9727). In addition, the SLC11A1 genotype GG (p = 0.0050, OR 3.0395, 95% CI 1.4065-6.5789) and CD4+ T lymphocyte count (p = 0.0030, OR 0.9980, 95% CI 0.9970-0.9990) were associated with VL-HIV coinfection in a multivariate model. The polymorphism of the SLC11A1 gene (rs3731865) was associated with VL-HIV coinfection, suggesting a possible genetic mechanism involved in the susceptibility to VL in HIV patients. This finding can suggest new therapeutic targets and genetic markers for the VL-HIV-coinfected population.

Abstract
Chagas disease, caused by the flagellate parasite Trypanosoma cruzi, is a wellknown neglected tropical disease. This parasitic illness affects 6-7 million people and can lead to severe myocarditis and/or complications of the digestive tract. The changes in its epidemiology facilitate co-infection with the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), making even more difficult the diagnosis and prognosis. The parasitic infection is reactivated in T. cruzi/HIV co-infection, with the appearance of unusual manifestations in the chronic phase and the exacerbation of classical clinical signs. The therapeutic arsenal to treat Chagas disease, in all its clinical forms, is restricted basically to two drugs, benznidazole and nifurtimox. Both drugs are extremely toxic and the therapeutic efficacy is still unclear, making the clinical treatment a huge issue to be solved. Therefore, it seems obvious the necessity of new tangible approaches to combat this illness. In this sense, the repositioning of approved drugs appears as an interesting and viable strategy. The discovery of Human Immunodeficiency Virus Aspartyl Peptidase Inhibitors (HIV-PIs) represented a milestone in the treatment of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) and, concomitantly, a marked reduction in both the incidence and prevalence of important bacterial, fungal and parasitic co-infections was clearly observed. Taking all these findings into consideration, the present review summarizes the promising and beneficial data concerning the effects of HIV-PIs on all the evolutionary forms of T. cruzi and in important steps of the parasite's life cycle, which highlight their possible application as alternative drugs to treat Chagas disease.

Abstract
Objective: To test the hypothesis that miltefosine (MTF)-polyphenol co-loaded second-generation nano-transfersomes (SGNTs) can be an effective approach for the topical treatment of cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL).Methods: The co-loaded SGNTs with various MTF-polyphenol combinations were developed, evaluated and compared for the entrapment efficiency, vesicle size, deformability index, ex-vivo permeation, cytotoxicity, and anti-leishmanial potential, using both in-vitro and in-vivo models.Results: The co-loaded SGNTs were spherical in shape, with an average size of 119 ± 1.5 nm and a high entrapment efficiency of 73.7 ± 3.7%. The ex-vivo study displayed a 3.2-fold higher permeation of MTF when entrapped in co-loaded SGNTs, whereas cytotoxicity potential of co-loaded SGNTs was 43.2% higher than the MTF solution. A synergistic interaction was observed between MTF and apigenin (APG) among all polyphenols and an 8.0-fold lower IC50 was found against amastigotes of DsRed Leishmania mexicana, compared with the plain MTF solution. Moreover, the in-vivo studies displayed a 9.5-fold reduced parasitic burden in the L. mexicana infected BALB/c mice treated with MTF-APG co-loaded SGNTs gel.Conclusions: The potential of MTF-APG co-loaded SGNTs topical formulation is established for the first time as an effective drug delivery strategy against CL.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW The purpose of this review is to discuss the current knowledge of HIV and tissue parasite co-infection in the context of transmission enhancement, clinical characteristics, treatment, relapse, and clinical outcomes. RECENT FINDINGS The pathophysiology and clinical sequelae of tissue parasites in people living with HIV (PLWH) have been well described for only a handful of organisms, primarily protozoa such as malaria and leishmaniasis. Available published data indicate that the interactions between HIV and tissue parasites are highly variable depending on the infecting organism and the degree of host immunosuppression. Some tissue parasites, such as Schistosoma species, are known to facilitate the transmission of HIV. Conversely, uncontrolled HIV infection can lead to the earlier and more severe presentation of a variety of tissue parasites and can make treatment more challenging. Although much investigation remains to be done to better understand the interactions between consequences of HIV and tissue parasite co-infection, it is important to disseminate the current knowledge on this topic to health care providers in order to prevent, treat, and control infections in PLWH.

Abstract
Leishmania infantum causes human and canine leishmaniosis. The parasite, transmitted by phlebotomine sand flies, infects species other than dogs and people, including wildlife, although their role as reservoirs of infection remains unknown for most species. Molecular typing of parasites to investigate genetic variability and evolutionary proximity can help understand transmission cycles and designing control strategies. We investigated Leishmania DNA variability in kinetoplast (kDNA) and internal transcribed spacer 2 (ITS2) sequences in asymptomatically infected wildlife (n = 58) and symptomatically and asymptomatically infected humans (n = 38) and dogs (n = 15) from south-east Spain, using single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and in silico restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analyses. All ITS2 sequences (n = 76) displayed a 99%-100% nucleotide identity with a L. infantum reference sequence, except one with a 98% identity to a reference Leishmania panamensis sequence, from an Ecuadorian patient. No heterogeneity was recorded in the 73 L. infantum ITS2 sequences except for one SNP in a human parasite sequence. In contrast, kDNA analysis of 44 L. infantum sequences revealed 11 SNP genotypes (nucleotide variability up to 4.3%) and four RFLP genotypes including B, F and newly described S and T genotypes. Genotype frequency was significantly greater in symptomatic compared to asymptomatic individuals. Both methods similarly grouped parasites as predominantly or exclusively found in humans, in dogs, in wildlife or in all three of them. Accordingly, the phylogenetic analysis of kDNA sequences revealed three main clusters, two as a paraphyletic human parasites clade and a third including dogs, people and wildlife parasites. Results suggest that Leishmania infantum genetics is complex even in small geographical areas and that, probably, several independent transmission cycles take place simultaneously including some connecting animals and humans. Investigating these transmission networks may be useful in understanding the transmission dynamics, infection risk and therefore in planning L. infantum control strategies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Leishmaniasis is a parasitic disease caused by a protozoan of the Leishmania genus, and is considered a neglected tropical disease. It still remains a main public health concern at global level and in Arab world mainly in low-income countries. Therefore, this study was designed to evaluate the Arab world's growing contribution to global leishmaniasis research. METHODS This study describes a bibliometric review of all leishmaniasis research publications published between January 1998 and December 2017 indexed on the Scopus database. RESULTS The total number of publications published at global level was 17,570 papers, which achieves an average annual productivity of 878.50 papers publications. Brazil was responsible for the greatest output with the total number of publications of 3865 followed by the Unites States (n = 2729), India (n = 2119), the United Kingdom (n = 1363), and Spain (n = 1274). By limiting the analysis to the publications that have been published by Arab world, the research productivity was 993 papers, which represents 5.65% of total research output at global level in research regarding leishmaniasis. Tunisia was responsible for the greatest output from Arab world with the total number of publications of 297 followed by Sudan (n = 192), Saudi Arabia (n = 131), Morocco (n = 119) and Egypt (n = 67). Since 1998, the growth of publications on leishmaniasis fluctuates, overall showing a rising trend in both global and Arab world. There is a highly significant correlation between publication productivity related to leishmaniasis at global level and the Arab world (r = 0.936; p-value< 0.001). Leishmaniasis treatment, intracellular mechanism of infection, and lifecycle of leishmania are the major current hot topics for the research in this subject at global level and the Arab world. CONCLUSIONS The current study presents a novel review of the current Arab leishmaniasis-related research, and how these results are related to worldwide output. In comparison to the global research output, the Arab world produced less leishmaniasis research. The data presented in the current study by this innovative approach may serve relevant researchers to direct the global leishmaniasis research to Arab counties in which leishmaniasis is endemic.
