Effects of Enteromorpha prolifera sulfated polysaccharide and aluminium ion addition on the multifunctional property of conductive hydrogel for wearable strain sensing

Although introducing Enteromorpha prolifera sulfated polysaccharide (SPEP) enhances the mechanical properties of hydrogels significantly, little is known about the effects of polysaccharide and ion addition on morphological and physicochemical properties of conductive hydrogel. Therefore, the Poly (acrylic acid)/SPEPn/Al3+m (PAA/SPEPn/Al3+m) hydrogels with different SPEP and Al3+ addition were synthesized by simple one-pot method. The porosity, tensile strength, and swelling ration increased, while compressive strength, elongation at break, self-healing, self-adhesion properties increased first and then decreased as SPEP addition increased from 0 % to 3.80 %. The Al3+ addition increased from 0.08 % to 0.30 %, both tensile and compressive strength increased first and then decreased, while elongation at break kept increasing. Unexpectedly, both increasing SPEP and Al3+ addition reduced the electrical conductivity, while SPEP increased the gauge factor of hydrogel. The hydrogel exhibited optimal comprehensive properties when SPEP and Al3+ addition were 2.31 % and 0.24 %, respectively. The PAA/SPEP2.31%/Al3+0.24% hydrogel showed high tensile strength (107.60 kPa), elongation at break (2426.67 %), strain self-healing rate (81.87 %), adhesion strength (21.61 kPa), and conductivity (3.60 S/m). Overall, the properties of PAA/SPEPn/Al3+m hydrogels can be regulated through tailoring SPEP and Al3+ addition, which can be used as on-demand strategy to improve the performance of PAA/SPEPn/Al3+m hydrogels for each application.

Porous boron nitride nanofibers enhanced sodium acrylate and acrylamide copolymer hydrogels for effective adsorption of Pb2

A new composite hydrogel adsorbent for adsorption of Pb²⁺ has been prepared by combining porous boron nitride nanofibers (BNNFs) and the acrylamide and sodium acrylate copolymer (P(AANa-co-AM)) via a chemical crosslinking method. Porous BNNFs with abundant hydroxyl functional groups can form hydrogen bond interactions with carboxyl and amino functional groups of the copolymer in the composite hydrogel and carry and dissipate forces for the composite hydrogels. So the mechanical performances of the copolymer hydrogels can be effectively improved, which is very valuable for the practical application of the composite hydrogel to remove Pb²⁺ from waste water. The thermal stability and swelling performance of the pure copolymer hydrogels were also greatly improved. This is not only because of the strong hydrogen bond interactions but also the good thermal stability and flexibility of BNNFs. The composite hydrogel adsorbent shows superior adsorption capacity for Pb²⁺ (490.2 mg g^-1) to most of the reported hydrogel adsorbents. The chemisorption dominates the whole adsorption process according to the pseudo-second-order kinetic and the Langmuir models. The composite hydrogel adsorbent also shows good reusability. Therefore, we believe that the prepared composite hydrogels will play an important role in removing Pb²⁺ from wastewater.

Preparation and properties of CS/P(AM-co-AA) composite hydrogels by frontal polymerization of ternary DES

A deep eutectic solvent (DES) was prepared from choline chloride (ChCl), acrylamide (AM) and acrylic acid (AA); chitosan (CS) was used as a filler, and CS/P(AM-co-AA) composite hydrogels were prepared by frontal polymerization (FP). The hydrogels were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The mechanical properties, pH responsiveness and conductivity of the hydrogel were studied. The results showed that the mechanical properties of the hydrogel were significantly improved by adding CS, and the tensile strength and compressive strength were increased by 11.61 and 1.65 times respectively due to the increase in number of hydrogen bonds. At the same time, due to the presence of AA, the composite hydrogel has excellent pH response and super high swelling performance under alkaline conditions. The introduction of CS enhanced the conductivity of the hydrogel and gradually increased with the increase of CS content. The conductivity of the hydrogel with CS content of 10 wt% was nearly 160 times that of the hydrogel without CS. In this study, a more convenient and rapid method was proposed to prepare conductive composite hydrogels with excellent mechanical properties and pH responsiveness.

Thermosensitive P(AAc-co-NIPAm) hydrogels display enhanced toughness and self-healing via ion-ligand interactions

Hydrogels containing thermosensitive polymers such as poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (P(NIPAm)) may contract during heating and show great promise in fields ranging from soft robotics to thermosensitive biosensors. However, these gels often exhibit low stiffness, tensile strength, and mechanical toughness, limiting their applicability. Through copolymerization of P(NIPAm) with poly(Acrylic acid) (P(AAc)) and introduction of ferric ions (Fe³⁺ ) that coordinate with functional groups along the P(AAc) chains, we here introduce a thermoresponsive hydrogel with significantly enhanced mechanical extensibility, strength, and toughness. Using both experimentation and constitutive modeling, we find that increasing the ratio of m(AAc):m(NIPAm) in the prepolymer decreases strength and toughness but improves extensibility. In contrast, increasing Fe³⁺ concentration generally improves strength and toughness with little decrease in extensibility. Due to reversible coordination of the Fe³⁺ bonds, these gels display excellent recovery of mechanical strength during cyclic loading and self-healing ability. While thermosensitive contraction imbued by the underlying P(NIPAm) is reduced slightly with increased Fe³⁺ concentration, the temperature transition range is widened and shifted upwards towards that of human body temperature (between 30 and 40°C), perhaps rendering these gels suitable as in vivo biosensors. Finally, these gels display excellent adsorptive properties with a variety of materials, rendering them possible candidates in adhesive applications. This article is protected by copyright. Application Progress of Modified Chitosan and Its Composite Biomaterials for Bone Tissue Engineering

In recent years, bone tissue engineering (BTE), as a multidisciplinary field, has shown considerable promise in replacing traditional treatment modalities (i.e., autografts, allografts, and xenografts). Since bone is such a complex and dynamic structure, the construction of bone tissue composite materials has become an attractive strategy to guide bone growth and regeneration. Chitosan and its derivatives have been promising vehicles for BTE owing to their unique physical and chemical properties. With intrinsic physicochemical characteristics and closeness to the extracellular matrix of bones, chitosan-based composite scaffolds have been proved to be a promising candidate for providing successful bone regeneration and defect repair capacity. Advances in chitosan-based scaffolds for BTE have produced efficient and efficacious bio-properties via material structural design and different modifications. Efforts have been put into the modification of chitosan to overcome its limitations, including insolubility in water, faster depolymerization in the body, and blood incompatibility. Herein, we discuss the various modification methods of chitosan that expand its fields of application, which would pave the way for future applied research in biomedical innovation and regenerative medicine.

Chitosan-based smart hybrid materials: a physico-chemical perspective

Chitosan is one of the most studied cationic polysaccharides. Due to its unique characteristics of being water soluble, biocompatible, biodegradable, and non-toxic, this macromolecule is highly attractive for a broad range of applications. In addition, its complex behavior and the number of ways it interacts with different components in a system result in an astonishing variety of chitosan-based materials. Herein, we present recent advances in the field of chitosan-based materials from a physico-chemical perspective, with focus on aqueous mixtures with oppositely charged colloids, chitosan-based thin films, and nanocomposite systems. In this review, we focus our attention on the physico-chemical properties of chitosan-based materials, including solubility, mechanical resistance, barrier properties, and thermal behaviour, and provide a link to the chemical peculiarities of chitosan, such as its intrinsic low solubility, high rigidity, large charge separation, and strong tendency to form intra- and inter-molecular hydrogen bonds.

Polysaccharide-Based In Situ Self-Healing Hydrogels for Tissue Engineering Applications

In situ hydrogels have attracted increasing interest in recent years due to the need to develop effective and practical implantable platforms. Traditional hydrogels require surgical interventions to be implanted and are far from providing personalized medicine applications. However, in situ hydrogels offer a wide variety of advantages, such as a non-invasive nature due to their localized action or the ability to perfectly adapt to the place to be replaced regardless the size, shape or irregularities. In recent years, research has particularly focused on in situ hydrogels based on natural polysaccharides due to their promising properties such as biocompatibility, biodegradability and their ability to self-repair. This last property inspired in nature gives them the possibility of maintaining their integrity even after damage, owing to specific physical interactions or dynamic covalent bonds that provide reversible linkages. In this review, the different self-healing mechanisms, as well as the latest research on in situ self-healing hydrogels, is presented, together with the potential applications of these materials in tissue regeneration.
