Abstract
Violence against women is a pressing global issue that poses a number of significant health risks. The influence of violence on women's health during the menopause has been underestimated, especially its impact on the early onset of menopause and on the exacerbation of symptoms that determine quality of life. The objectives of our study were to analyse whether experiencing any type of violence increases the risk of early menopause, worsens menopausal symptoms, and results in a lower quality of life. This cross-sectional observational study recruited 29 postmenopausal women who had experienced violence from a partner in their lifetimes. Additionally, 89 postmenopausal who had not suffered from violence were included as a control group. All the women who had experienced violence from a partner reported psychological and economic violence, 75 % reported physical violence, 57.1 % reported sexual violence, and 39.3 % reported all types of violence. Violence was found to be associated with menopausal symptoms and poorer quality of life. These associations persisted after adjustment for multiple factors, and women who had experienced any form of violence reported a worse quality of life during menopause. Moreover, violence-exposed women reached menopause approximately 20 months earlier (p < 0.05), and 20.7 % of these women developed premature ovarian insufficiency (p < 0.001).

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To assess the association between ACEs and the development of psychiatric disorders by age 25 among individuals who sustained TBI prior to age 10. DESIGN Population-based case-control study. SETTING Olmsted County, Minnesota. PARTICIPANTS 566 individuals (N=566) who sustained a TBI prior to age 10 were identified and classified using a validated TBI classification system. Among these individuals, cases with a subsequent mood or anxiety disorder prior to age 25 were identified through clinical diagnostic codes and manual record review. For each case, a 1:1 matched control was randomly selected from individuals with a pediatric TBI who did not have a mood/anxiety disorder prior to the matched case's mood/anxiety disorder. INTERVENTIONS Not applicable MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Development of a mood/anxiety disorder. RESULTS Among the 114 matched pairs of individuals with a TBI prior to age 10, a subsequent mood/anxiety diagnosis was significantly associated with a history of 10 of 14 ACE categories and with having an ACE score ≥1 (odds ratio 5.17; 95% confidence interval 2.78-9.59). CONCLUSIONS This is the first population-based study to the authors' knowledge showing that among children who sustained a TBI prior to age 10, those who experienced ACEs are at increased risk of developing a mood or anxiety disorder.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the association of primary infertility with subsequent bilateral oophorectomy and hysterectomy, using a population-based cohort of women with primary infertility and age-matched women in a referent group. METHODS The Rochester Epidemiology Project record-linkage system was used to assemble a population-based cohort of women with primary infertility diagnosed between 1980 and 1999 (index date). Women were age-matched (±1 year) 1:1 to women without a history of infertility or hysterectomy at the index date (referent group). Cox proportional hazards models were fit to compare long-term risks of bilateral oophorectomy and hysterectomy, respectively, between women with infertility and women in the referent group. RESULTS Among both groups of 1,001 women, the mean age at the index date was 29.2±4.4 years. Median duration of follow-up was 23.7 years for both groups. Women with primary infertility were 1.7 times (adjusted hazard ratio [aHR] 1.69, 95% CI 1.22-2.33) more likely to undergo bilateral oophorectomy compared with women in the referent group. In a sensitivity analysis that excluded women with a diagnosis of infertility related to endometriosis and their matched referent group participants, this association persisted (aHR 1.50, 95% CI 1.06-2.14). Women with primary infertility did not have a significant increased risk of hysterectomy (aHR 0.98, 95% CI 0.79-1.23). However, risk of hysterectomy was increased in those with primary infertility related to endometriosis (aHR 1.94, 95% CI 1.12-3.34). We observed that women with primary infertility were more likely to undergo hysterectomy with bilateral oophorectomy. Women in the referent group were more likely to undergo hysterectomy with ovarian conservation. Few women in either group had isolated bilateral oophorectomy. CONCLUSION Primary infertility, with and without a diagnosis of endometriosis, is associated with an increased risk of bilateral oophorectomy. In women with endometriosis-related infertility, there is an association with future hysterectomy. These findings represent important confounders in the evaluation of long-term health outcomes related to primary infertility.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Depression is a leading cause of disability globally and affects more women than men. Ovarian sex steroids are thought to modify depression risk in women and interventions such as bilateral oophorectomy that permanently change the sex steroid milieu may increase the risk of depression. This study aimed to investigate the associations between unilateral and bilateral oophorectomy and depression over a 25-year period (1993-2018) and whether this varied by age at oophorectomy or use of menopausal hormone therapy. METHODS Twenty-five thousand one hundred eighty-eight nurses aged ≥45 years from the Danish Nurse Cohort were included. Nurses with depression prior to baseline were excluded. Poisson regression models, with log-transformed person-years as offset, were used to assess the associations between oophorectomy and incident depression. Nurses who retained their ovaries were the reference group. RESULTS Compared with nurses with retained ovaries, bilateral oophorectomy was associated with a slightly higher rate of depression (rate ratio [RR], 1.08; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.95-1.23), but without statistical significance. However, when stratified by age at oophorectomy, compared with nurses with retained ovaries, bilateral oophorectomy at age ≥51 years was associated with higher rates of depression (RR 1.16; 95% CI, 1.00-1.34), but not bilateral oophorectomy at age <51 years (RR 0.86; 95% CI, 0.69-1.07); P value for difference in estimates = 0.02. No association between unilateral oophorectomy and depression was observed. CONCLUSIONS In this cohort of Danish female nurses, bilateral oophorectomy at age ≥51 years, but not at younger ages, was associated with a slightly higher rate of depression compared with those who retained their ovaries.

Abstract
Objective To examine the associations between adverse childhood experiences (ACE) and the risk of hysterectomy and bilateral oophorectomy in a national sample of women in England. Design Retrospective cohort study. Setting A stratified random sample of households across England. Population 2648 women aged ≥55 years in 2007 from the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing (ELSA) were included in the bilateral oophorectomy analyses and 2622 in the hysterectomy analyses. Methods Logistic and multinomial logistic regression analyses of the associations between categories of the ACE summary score (0, 1, 2, ≥3 ACE), eight individual ACE, and hysterectomy and bilateral oophorectomy. Results 615 women had undergone hysterectomy and 259 women bilateral oophorectomy. We found graded associations between the summary ACE score and risk of hysterectomy and bilateral oophorectomy. In the fully adjusted model, compared with women with no ACE, those with ≥3 ACE had double the odds of hysterectomy (odds ratio [OR] 2.01, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.30–3.11) and more than double the odds of bilateral oophorectomy (OR 2.61, 95% CI 1.54–4.42). The exclusion of women with cancer history made the associations stronger, especially in women who underwent hysterectomy at age <40 years or bilateral oophorectomy at age ≤44 years. Several individual ACE were positively associated with both outcomes. Conclusions ACE are associated with increased risk of hysterectomy and bilateral oophorectomy. Individual‐level covariates did not explain these associations. Our findings highlight the importance of a life course approach to understanding surgical menopause and add to our knowledge of the societal and public health impact of ACE. Abstract
In this invited review, we discuss some unresolved and controversial issues concerning premature (<40 years) or early (40-45 years) bilateral oophorectomy. First, we clarify the terminology. Second, we summarize the long-term harmful consequences of bilateral oophorectomy. Third, we discuss the restrictive indications for bilateral oophorectomy in premenopausal women to prevent ovarian cancer that are justified by the current scientific evidence. Fourth, we explain the importance of estrogen replacement therapy when bilateral oophorectomy is performed. Hormone replacement therapy is indicated after bilateral oophorectomy until the age of expected natural menopause like in premature or early primary ovarian insufficiency. Fifth, we discuss the relationship between adverse childhood experiences, adverse adult experiences, mental health, gynecologic symptoms and bilateral oophorectomy. The acceptance and popularity of bilateral oophorectomy over several decades, and its persistence even in the absence of supporting scientific evidence, suggest that non-medical factors related to sex, gender, reproduction, cultural beliefs and socioeconomic structure are involved. We discuss some of these non-medical factors and the need for more research in this area.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To examine the association of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) with overall menopausal symptom burden in midlife women. STUDY DESIGN This was a cross-sectional study of women between the ages of 40 and 65 years who were seen for specialty consultation in the Menopause and Women's Sexual Health Clinic, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN between May 1, 2015 and December 31, 2016. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Participants completed the ACE questionnaire to assess childhood abuse and neglect, the Menopause Rating Scale (MRS) to assess menopausal symptom burden, the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) to assess depression, the Generalized Anxiety Disorder questionnaire (GAD-7) to assess anxiety, and provided information on current abuse (physical, sexual and verbal/emotional). RESULTS Women meeting inclusion criteria (N = 1670) had a median age of 53.7 years (interquartile range: 49.1, 58.0). Of these women, 977 (58.5 %) reported any ACE and 288 (17.2 %) reported ≥4 ACEs. As menopausal symptoms increased in severity from the first to fourth quartile, the odds ratio of ACE 1-3 (vs. 0) increased from 1 to 2.50 (trend p < 0.01), and the odds ratio of ACE ≥ 4 (vs. 0) increased from 1 to 9.61 (trend p < 0.01), a pattern that was consistent across all menopausal symptom domains. The association between severe menopausal symptoms and higher childhood adversity (ACE score 1-3 or ≥4 vs. ACE = 0) remained significant after adjusting for age, partner status, education, employment, depression, anxiety, and hormone therapy use (OR 1.84 and 4.51, p < 0.01). CONCLUSION In this large cross-sectional study, there was a significant association between childhood adversity and self-reported menopausal symptoms that persisted even after adjustment for multiple confounders. These associations highlight the importance of screening women with bothersome menopausal symptoms for childhood adversity, and of offering appropriate management and counseling for the adverse experiences, when indicated.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE We studied eight mental health conditions diagnosed before bilateral oophorectomy performed for nonmalignant indications. METHODS We identified 1,653 premenopausal women who underwent bilateral oophorectomy for a nonmalignant indication in Olmsted County, Minnesota, during a 20-year period (1988-2007). Each woman was matched by age (±1 year) to one population-based control who had not undergone bilateral oophorectomy before the index date (age range: 21-49 years). Both cases and controls were identified using the records-linkage system of the Rochester Epidemiology Project (REP http://www.rochesterproject.org). For eight mental health conditions, we calculated odds ratios (ORs) and their 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) adjusted for race, education, and income using conditional logistic regression. RESULTS Pre-existing mood disorders, anxiety disorders, and somatoform disorders were associated with increased risk of bilateral oophorectomy in overall analyses. These associations were also significant in women ≤45 years of age at index date. Personality disorders were associated with increased risk only in overall analyses and adjustment disorders only in women 46 to 49 years of age. Some of the associations were significantly different across strata by age at index date and by indication. There was also a linear trend of increasing adjusted ORs from 1.55 (95% CI 1.31-1.83) for one mental health condition to 2.19 (95% CI 1.40-3.41) for three or more conditions (trend P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS We identified several mental health conditions that were associated with bilateral oophorectomy for nonmalignant indications. Abstract
STUDY QUESTION Is there an association between adverse childhood experiences (ACE) and the risk of miscarriage in the general population? SUMMARY ANSWER Specific ACE as well as the summary ACE score were associated with an increased risk of single and recurrent miscarriages. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY There is scarce evidence on the association between ACE and miscarriage risk. STUDY DESIGN, SIZE, DURATION We conducted a retrospective national cohort study. The sample consisted of 2795 women aged 55-89 years from the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing (ELSA). PARTICIPANTS/MATERIALS, SETTING, METHODS Our study was population-based and included women who participated in the ELSA Life History Interview in 2007. We estimated multinomial logistic regression models of the associations of the summary ACE score and eight individual ACE variables (pertaining to physical and sexual abuse, family dysfunction and experiences of living in residential care or with foster parents) with self-reported miscarriage (0, 1, ≥2 miscarriages). MAIN RESULTS AND THE ROLE OF CHANCE Five hundred and fifty-three women (19.8% of our sample) had experienced at least one miscarriage in their lifetime. Compared with women with no ACE, women with ≥3 ACE were two times more likely to experience a single miscarriage in their lifetime (relative risk ratio 2.00, 95% CI 1.25-3.22) and more than three times more likely to experience recurrent miscarriages (≥2 miscarriages) (relative risk ratio 3.10, 95% CI 1.63, 5.89) after adjustment for birth cohort, age at menarche and childhood socioeconomic position. Childhood experiences of physical and sexual abuse were individually associated with increased risk of miscarriage. LIMITATIONS, REASONS FOR CAUTION Given the magnitude of the observed associations, their biological plausibility, temporal order and consistency with evidence suggesting a positive association between ACE and adverse reproductive outcomes, it is unlikely that our findings are spurious. Nevertheless, the observed associations should not be interpreted as causal as our study was observational and potentially susceptible to bias arising from unaccounted confounders. Non-response and ensuing selection bias may have also biased our findings. Retrospectively measured ACE are known to be susceptible to underreporting. Our study may have misclassified cases of ACE and possibly underestimated the magnitude of the association between ACE and the risk of miscarriage. WIDER IMPLICATIONS OF THE FINDINGS Our study highlights experiences of psychosocial adversity in childhood as a potential risk factor for single and recurrent miscarriages. Our findings contribute to a better understanding of the role of childhood trauma in miscarriage and add an important life course dimension to the study of miscarriage. Abstract
OBJECTIVE To compare adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) in women with chronic pelvic pain with a control group, and describe occurrence of specific ACEs in women with chronic pelvic pain. METHODS This case-control study examined the relationship between history of ACEs, traumatic events occurring during childhood as defined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and chronic pelvic pain. Patients diagnosed with chronic pelvic pain (n=60) were age-matched to a control group of women without chronic pelvic pain (n=60). All participants completed validated measures to detect for presence of any of the 11 ACEs as identified by the CDC's Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System ACE Module. RESULTS Mean participant age was 40 (±11 years). Total numbers of ACEs were elevated in chronic pelvic pain participants compared with a control group (median 4 [interquartile range 2-6] vs median 1 [interquartile range 0-4], P<.001) and 53% of chronic pelvic pain participants had four or more ACEs, compared with 27% of the control group (odds ratio [OR] 3.14; 95% CI 1.46-6.75). All categories of abuse were more prevalent in chronic pelvic pain compared with the control group: physical (43% vs 15%, OR 4.3; 95% CI 1.8-10.4; P=.001), sexual (55% vs 23%, OR 4.0; 95% CI 1.8-8.8; P<.001) and verbal or emotional (62% vs 33%, OR 3.2; 95% CI 1.5-6.8; P=.003). Regarding household challenges, the subcategory most prevalent in chronic pelvic pain participants compared with the control group was that of witnessed domestic violence (35% vs 8%, OR 5.9; 95% CI 2.1-17.1, P<.001). CONCLUSION Chronic pelvic pain participants had a greater than threefold odds of having a history of childhood abuse and having witnessed domestic violence during childhood compared with the control group. Women with chronic pelvic pain had increased numbers of ACEs and 53% had four or more ACEs, crossing a threshold that others have found to predict poor overall health outcomes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Infertility affects 1 in 10 American reproductive-age women. The impact of this disease beyond the reproductive years is largely unknown. OBJECTIVE The objective of the study was to determine the association of infertility history with all-cause and cause-specific mortality. STUDY DESIGN This secondary analysis of a multicenter randomized clinical trial included 75,784 women (aged 55-74 years) prospectively enrolled in the Prostate, Lung, Colorectal, and Ovarian cancer-screening trial from 1992 through 2001 and followed up a minimum of 10 years for health-related outcomes and death (856,935 person-years). We examined the association of infertility history (inability to conceive for 1 year or greater) of all-cause and cause-specific mortality using disease risk score-adjusted Cox-proportional hazard regression models. RESULTS Infertile women had a 10% increased risk of death (from any cause) during the study period compared with the unexposed (adjusted hazard risk, 1.10, 95% confidence interval, 1.02-1.18, P = .010). This effect was predominantly noted in women at an otherwise low risk of mortality who had a 26% increased risk of death (adjusted hazard risk, 1.26, 95% confidence interval, 1.12-1.42, P < .001). No differences in cardiovascular or diabetic mortality were noted. The risk of cancer death at any time over the study period was increased by 23% in infertile women compared with the unexposed (adjusted hazard risk, 1.23, 95% confidence interval, 1.10-1.37, P < .001). This effect was predominantly noted in women at an otherwise low risk of cancer mortality who had a 47% increased risk of cancer death (adjusted hazard risk, 1.47, 95% confidence interval, 1.25-1.73, P < .001). While no differences are seen in the risk of death from endometrial or ovarian cancer, the risk of death from breast cancer was more than doubled in infertile women at an otherwise low risk of breast cancer death compared with the unexposed (adjusted hazard risk, 2.64, 95% confidence interval, 1.71-4.08, P < .001). CONCLUSION Infertility is a harbinger of future morbidity and mortality. Infertile women are at an increased risk of all-cause and cancer-related mortality. Consideration of infertility history in health care maintenance presents an opportunity for screening and early intervention for long-term health outcomes.

Abstract
The literature on the reproductive health and healthcare of women Veterans has increased dramatically, though there are important gaps. This article aims to synthesize recent literature on reproductive health and healthcare of women Veterans. We updated a literature search to identify manuscripts published between 2008 and July 1, 2017. We excluded studies that were not original research, only included active-duty women, or had few women Veterans in their sample. Manuscripts were reviewed using a standardized abstraction form. We identified 52 manuscripts. Nearly half (48%) of the new manuscripts addressed contraception and preconception care (n = 15) or pregnancy (n = 10). The pregnancy and family planning literature showed that (1) contraceptive use and unintended pregnancy among women Veterans using VA healthcare is similar to that of the general population; (2) demand for VA maternity care is increasing; and (3) women Veterans using VA maternity care are a high-risk population for adverse pregnancy outcomes. A recurrent finding across topics was that history of lifetime sexual assault and mental health conditions were highly prevalent among women Veterans and associated with a wide variety of adverse reproductive health outcomes across the life course. The literature on women Veterans' reproductive health is rapidly expanding, but remains largely observational. Knowledge gaps persist in the areas of sexually transmitted infections, infertility, and menopause.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES We investigated the association of personal, reproductive, and familial characteristics with bilateral oophorectomy performed for nonmalignant indications in a US population. STUDY DESIGN In an established cohort study, we used the records-linkage system of the Rochester Epidemiology Project (REP http://www.rochesterproject.org) to identify 1653 premenopausal women who underwent bilateral oophorectomy in Olmsted County, Minnesota between 1988 and 2007 for a nonmalignant indication. Each woman was matched by age (±1 year) to a population-based referent woman who had not undergone bilateral oophorectomy as of the index date. We used case-control analyses to investigate several characteristics associated with bilateral oophorectomy. Odds ratios and their 95% confidence intervals were adjusted for race, education, and income. RESULTS In the overall analyses, infertility was more common in women who underwent bilateral oophorectomy than in the controls, whereas use of oral contraceptives, a history of breast feeding, and fibrocystic breast disease were less common. The women who underwent bilateral oophorectomy weighed more than controls, had a higher body mass index and were younger at menarche. The associations were more pronounced for women who underwent the bilateral oophorectomy before age 46 years, and some associations were different for women with or without a benign ovarian indication. Reported family histories of uterine and other cancers were more common in women without a benign ovarian indication. CONCLUSIONS We identified a number of personal, reproductive, and familial characteristics that were associated with bilateral oophorectomy over a 20-year period. Our historical findings may help inform decision-making about oophorectomy in the future.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Precision medicine methodologies and approaches have advanced our understanding of the clinical presentation, development, progression, and management of Alzheimer's disease (AD) dementia. However, sex and gender have not yet been adequately integrated into many of these approaches. METHODS The Society for Women's Health Research Interdisciplinary Network on AD, comprised of an expert panel of scientists and clinicians, reviewed ongoing and published research related to sex and gender differences in AD. RESULTS The current review is a result of this Network's efforts and aims to: (1) highlight the current state-of-the-science in the AD field on sex and gender differences; (2) address knowledge gaps in assessing sex and gender differences; and (3) discuss 12 priority areas that merit further research. DISCUSSION The exclusion of sex and gender has impeded faster advancement in the detection, treatment, and care of AD across the clinical spectrum. Greater attention to these differences will improve outcomes for both sexes.

Abstract
PURPOSE This cohort study was established to investigate the effects of unilateral and bilateral oophorectomy on the ageing processes in women. PARTICIPANTS We used the records-linkage system of the Rochester Epidemiology Project (REP, http://www.rochesterproject.org) to identify 570 women who underwent unilateral oophorectomy and 1653 women who underwent bilateral oophorectomy in Olmsted County, Minnesota from 1988 through 2007 (20 years). Each woman was matched by age (±1 year) to a population-based referent woman who had not undergone any oophorectomy (570 referent women) or bilateral oophorectomy (1653 referent women). These four cohorts are being followed to assess morbidity and mortality and to study imaging and biological markers related to ageing. FINDINGS TO DATE An extensive medical record abstraction using the REP has been completed for each woman to obtain demographic, reproductive and adult life characteristics and extensive clinical information about the surgical procedure and subsequent oestrogen replacement therapy (or other sex steroid therapy). The cohorts have been used to date to study the accumulation of multiple chronic conditions following bilateral oophorectomy in women with or without chronic conditions at the time of the oophorectomy (or index date). From the cohorts, we have also derived a sample of 128 pairs of women for a case-control study linking adverse childhood or adult experiences to the risk of bilateral oophorectomy. FUTURE PLANS We hypothesise that the abrupt hormonal changes caused by bilateral oophorectomy in younger women have a major effect on the ageing processes across the full body. Therefore, we plan to investigate the risk of a wide range of chronic conditions following bilateral oophorectomy. Specific studies are underway for kidney diseases, psychiatric diseases and neurological diseases. In addition, we plan to invite a subsample of women from the bilateral oophorectomy cohort to participate in an in-person study involving brain imaging and the collection of biomarkers.

Abstract
The Women's Health Clinic (WHC) at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, has provided consultative care to women with menopausal and sexual health concerns since 2005. Clinical information on the 8688 women seen in the WHC through May 2017 who gave consent for the use of their medical records in research is contained in the Data Registry on Experiences of Aging, Menopause, and Sexuality (DREAMS). Initially, DREAMS was created to improve the clinical care of women, but it has become a valuable research tool. About 25% of the DREAMS women have been seen in the WHC 2 or more times, allowing for passive longitudinal follow-up. Additionally, about 25% of the DREAMS women live in the 27-county region included in the expanded Rochester Epidemiology Project medical records linkage system, providing additional information on those women. The cohort has been used to investigate associations between: caffeine intake and vasomotor symptom bother; recent abuse (physical, sexual, verbal, and emotional) and menopausal symptoms; specific menopausal symptoms and self-reported view of menopause; and obstructive sleep apnea risk and vasomotor symptom severity and the experience of vasomotor symptoms in women older than 60 years. A study nearing completion describes a clinical series of over 3500 women presenting for sexual health consultation by sexual function domain and by decade of life. Other studies under way are determining correlates with sexual health and dysfunction. Planned studies will investigate associations between the experience with menopause and the risk of disease.
