Health communication research in the Arab world: A bibliometric analysis

Clearness qualitative comparative analysis of the spread of TikTok health science knowledge popularization accounts

Objective

This study analyzed the popularity of TikTok health knowledge popularization accounts with the objective of creating a template for accounts suited to widely disseminating information, thereby enhancing the public's access to health knowledge on a broader scale.

Methods

This study is based on 40 Chinese TikTok short video accounts that were active from February to April 2022 and were engaged in health science popularization. Data were validated by structured calibration using three qualitative anchors. It employs the "content-context" and the elaboration likelihood models as the theoretical framework. A qualitative comparative analysis is used to explore the factors affecting the popularity of this type of account mechanism.

Results

Among the nine variables involved in the calculation, one reached 0.909091, demonstrating that the number of followers was both a necessary factor and a condition for the popularity of short health science video accounts. There were 16 paths in the complex solution with a consistency of 1, and their overall coverage reached 0.878788, indicating that approximately 87% of the cases could be explained. From the spread of the content and communication situation, professional medical knowledge, current hot topics, professionals, and serious issues were the most likely combinations for rapid spread. From the perspective of the central and edge paths, "likes" exceeding 100,000 and fans exceeding 1 million were essential combinations.

Conclusions

The dissemination of medical knowledge has gained significant traction, especially with regard to trending and popular topics. When it comes to the tone of communication, a serious style proved effective in fostering what can be termed "hot communication." From the standpoint of central and peripheral paths, it is crucial that the number of likes in the past month and the total number of fans surpass 100,000 and one million, respectively.

Effect of Face Masks on Interpersonal Communication During the COVID-19 Pandemic

Interpersonal communication has been severely affected during the COVID-19 pandemic. Protective measures, such as social distancing and face masks, are essential to mitigate efforts against the virus, but pose challenges on daily face-to-face communication. Face masks, particularly, muffle sounds and cover facial expressions that ease comprehension during live communication. Here, we explore the role of facial expressions in communication and we highlight how the face mask can hinder interpersonal connection. In addition, we offer coping strategies and skills that can ease communication with face masks as we navigate the current and any future pandemic.

Leveraging media and health communication strategies to overcome the COVID-19 infodemic

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused a complementary infodemic, whereby various outlets and digital media portals shared false information and unsourced recommendations on health. In addition, journals and authors published a mass of academic articles at a speed that suggests a non-existent or a non-rigorous peer review process. Such lapses can promote false information and adoption of health policies based on misleading data. Reliable information is vital for designing and implementing preventive measures and promoting health awareness in the fight against COVID-19. In the age of social media, information travels wide and fast, emphasizing a need for accurate data to be corroborated swiftly and for preventing misleading information from wide dissemination. Here, we discuss the implications of the COVID-19 infodemic and explore practical ways to leverage health communication strategies to overcome it. We propose the "Infodemic Response Checklist" as a comprehensive tool to overcome the challenges posed by the current and any future infodemics.

Coping With Stress and Burnout Associated With Telecommunication and Online Learning

The COVID-19 pandemic substantially impacted the field of telecommunication. It increased the use of media applications that enable teleconferencing, telecommuting, online learning, and social relations. Prolonged time facing screens, tablets, and smart devices increases stress and anxiety. Mental health stressors associated with telecommunication can add to other stressors related to quarantine time and lockdown to eventually lead to exhaustion and burnout. In this review, the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on communication and education are explored. In addition, the relationship between prolonged exposure to digital devices and mental health is studied. Finally, coping strategies are offered to help relieve the tele-burdens of pandemics.

The public perception of food and non-food related risks of infection and trust in the risk communication during COVID-19 crisis: A study on selected countries from the Arab region

The coronavirus pandemic caused a state of panic worldwide. Mixed messages were given about its risk and how to contain it, when trust in authorities and reliable scientific information are essential to reduce unnecessary scares and inappropriate risk perceptions. We know little about public concerns and opinions in health authorities in the Arab world. Thus, an attempt was made to generate such information through a web-based survey. A total of 1074 subjects from Lebanon, Jordan, and Tunisia were recruited to explore their perception of food and non-food risks of infection and the influence of the source of information, trust, and attitudes towards the local authorities' communication of risk. Seventy percent of the respondents were concerned that COVID-19 may be transmitted through food. The perception of risk from touching contaminated surfaces and food packaging and being exposed to infected people during food shopping was even higher. For only less than half of the respondents, the information from local authorities was considered trustworthy and the associated risk communication and response to false rumors were timely, effective, and clear. But the satisfaction level among the Jordanians was remarkably stronger than for the Lebanese and Tunisian respondents. The demographic factors, trust in information, and attitudes towards authorities' performance in risk communication did not influence risk perceptions. Respondents’ knowledge was limited based on their chief sources of information, such as social media, local news media broadcasts, and announcements by the World Health Organization. Our conclusion is that unnecessary fear increases among the public when risks that impact heath are unknown. More research in the Arab region is needed to understand the determinants of risk perceptions considering psychological factors on the risk to health. Unfortunately, it is difficult to restrict or contain misleading information from various forms of social media. We recommend that for reducing fear and building confidence with the public for appropriate action during the pandemic, local authorities should enhance the quality and level of details of the information that they share during such crises.
