Abstract
BACKGROUND Herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) is a common sexually transmitted infection (STI) primarily acquired through sexual contact. In 2000, the World Health Organization (WHO) for the first time reported the association of STIs with male infertility. Infertility is described as the inability to achieve a clinical pregnancy after engaging in regular, unprotected sexual intercourse for a year or more. HSV-2 infection is a significant concern for infertility, with evidence suggesting it can contribute to a range of reproductive complications. The seroprevalence of HSV-2 among infertile men in Iran has not yet been determined. Therefore, we conducted a case-control study to examine the seroprevalence of HSV-2 in multiple subgroups of infertile men with abnormal sperm parameters (Case) and individuals seeking sex selection services and those with normal sperm parameters (Control). METHOD Blood samples were collected from infertile males seeking fertility treatment, and those seeking sex selection at the Avicenna Infertility Clinic in Tehran, Iran between July 2023 and February 2024. Demographic and clinical data were collected through a questionnaire. Anti-HSV-2 IgG antibodies (Abs) were detected using a commercially available ELISA kit [Herpes simplex 2 (gG2 purified), Vircell, Spain]. RESULTS Of the 486 samples that met the eligibility criteria, 420 were tested. The ELISA testing was performed on 98 control, 32 Teratozoospermia (T), 45 Asthenozoospermia (A), 48 Oligoteratozoospermia (OTA), 50 Azoospermia (Azo), and 147 Teratozooasthenospermia (TA) samples. Thirteen samples came out positive for HSV-2 IgG Abs (3.41% case and 2.04% control group). Of these 13 positive samples, 7 were from the TA group, 2 from the T group, 2 from the Azo group, and 2 control. The age (43.15 ± 5.10 vs. 37.74 ± 6.20, p = 0·0020) and marriage duration (12.54 ± 6.88 vs. 8.12 ± 4.95, p = 0·0019) were significantly higher in the HSV-2 IgG Ab positive group. CONCLUSION The results of this study enhance our understanding of the epidemiology of HSV-2 in individuals seeking infertility treatment. It can be inferred that the seroprevalence of HSV-2 IgG among patients referring to an infertility treatment clinic in Tehran is relatively low. The study also indicates that the chance of HSV-2 infection increases with age. The highest number of positive cases in the TA suggests that HSV-2 may adversely affect sperm motility and morphology.

Abstract
Background Herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) is a common genitally-transmitted viral infection affecting more than 400 million individuals globally. In the United Arab Emirates (UAE), in specific at-risk population groups, the burden of HSV-2 has not been reported. This study investigated the prevalence of HSV-2 IgG antibodies in patients seeking fertility treatment and characterized patients with seropositivity to HSV-2 IgG antibodies. Methodology A cross-sectional sample of patients seeking fertility treatment in a major fertility clinic in Abu Dhabi, UAE was surveyed from April to May 2021. Patients were consecutively invited to complete self-administered questionnaires and provide blood for HSV-2 testing. Information on sociodemographics, medical history, and infertility was collected. Serum specimens were screened using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay for HSV-2 IgG antibodies detection. Results Two hundred and ninety-nine patients were surveyed and provided blood samples. The mean age of the patients was 35.9 ± 6.8 [mean ± standard deviation (SD)] years with 89.3% being women. Sixty-six percent were overweight or obese, 25.0% had at least one chronic comorbidity, and 19.6% reported ever-had genital infection. More than two-thirds (68.3%) of the patients were infertile for ≥ 6 months. Of the 42 infertile males, 69.0% had an abnormal semen analysis. HSV-2 IgG antibodies was detected in 12.4% of patients. The HSV-2 IgG seropositive patients had a higher mean age (39.5 vs. 35.4 years; p < 0.001) compared to seronegative patients. HSV-2 IgG antibodies seropositivity was more common in males (15.6%) than females (12.0%), in patients with secondary (14.1%) vs. primary (9.2%) infertility, or in males with abnormal (10.3%) vs. normal (7.7%) semen. Conclusion Exposure to HSV-2 at any time in patients seeking fertility treatment in the UAE was found to be slightly common in more than one out of 10 patients. Tailored health campaigns on HSV-2 prevention are warranted.

Herpes Simplex Virus Seroprevalence among Pregnant Finnish Women and Their Spouses-A Six-Year Follow-Up Cohort Study. Microorganisms 2022; 10:microorganisms10081506. Abstract
The aim was to evaluate the herpes simplex virus (HSV) seroprevalence and seroconversion among 285 pregnant women and their 120 male spouses in Finland during a six-year follow-up (FU) between 1998–2008. We also studied the effect of sexual habits, pregnancy, and other demographic factors on the acquisition of HSV infection. Combined HSV-1 and HSV-2-IgG antibodies were assessed in the first baseline serum samples with an indirect enzyme immunoassay method. The individuals with seronegative or borderline HSV serology at baseline were additionally tested using their latest FU serum sample available. The overall HSV seroprevalence during the FU was 58.9% (168/285) among the women and 53.3% (64/120) among their spouses. The seroconversion rate was 11.4% (15/132) and 12.5% (8/64) among women and their spouses, respectively. Both spouses were HSV seropositive in 39.2% (47/120). To determine the HSV-2 seroprevalence, we also tested all HSV-seropositive participants using HSV-2-specific antigen. HSV-2 seropositivity was detected in 10.9% (44/405) of the participants. The age (p = 0.006) and history of genital warts (p = 0.006) of the women were associated with combined HSV-1 and/or HSV-2 seropositivity, while a younger age was related to HSV seroconversion (p = 0.023). Among the male spouses, HSV seropositivity was associated with the practice of oral sex (p = 0.033). To conclude, women of childbearing age acquire primary HSV infections and the presence of HSV in oral epithelium is common among HSV-seropositive individuals.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Herpes infections are common infections among populations. Herein, a cross-sectional study was used to determine the seroprevalence of herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) and herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) IgG antibodies and their association with potential infection risk factors among Jordanians. METHODS A total of 759 serum samples were collected (January to February 2020) and analyzed for HSV-1 and HSV-2 IgG antibodies by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Estimates for population seropositivity were determined by weighting the age-specific seroprevalence by the size of the population in each age stratum. RESULTS The population estimate for HSV-1 seroprevalence was 75.3%. After adjustment for possible confounders, regression analysis revealed higher seroprevalence with increase in age (p < 0.005) and low household income (p = 0.002). The population estimate for HSV-2 seroprevalence was 2.9%. No significant differences in HSV-2 seroprevalence were observed in association with age, gender, family size, educational level, and socioeconomic status, likely due to low seropositivity. CONCLUSIONS Jordanians have high HSV-1 and low HSV-2 seroprevalence. Periodical studies might be needed to evaluate changes in HSV-1 and HSV-2 seroprevalence over time. This study provides essential epidemiological data for Jordan and the Middle East and North Africa region.

Abstract
Severe, recurrent or atypical Herpes simplex virus (HSV) infections are still posing clinical and diagnostic problem in clinical immunology facilities. However, the molecular background of this disorder is still unclear. The aim of this study was to investigate the expression of activating receptors on NK cells (CD16, NKp46, NKG2D, NKp80, 2B4, CD48 and NTB-A) and checkpoint molecule PD-1 on T lymphocytes and NK cells, in patients with severe and/or recurrent infections with HSV and age-matched healthy control subjects. As a result, we noticed that patients with severe and/or recurrent infection with HSV had significantly lower percentage of CD16brightCD56dim and higher percentage of CD16dimCD56bright NK cell subsets, when compared to control subjects, which may be associated with abnormal NK cell maturation during chronic HSV infection. Patients had also significantly downregulated expression of CD16 receptor on CD16bright NK cells. The expression of activating receptors was significantly reduced on patients' NK cells - either both the percentage of NK cells expressing the receptor and MFI of its expression (NKp46, NKp80 and 2B4 on CD16brightCD56dim cells and NKp46 on CD16dimCD56bright cells) or only MFI (NKG2D on both NK cell subsets). It should be noted that the reduction of receptor expression was limited to NK cells, since there was no differences in the percentage of receptor-positive cells or MFI on T cells. However, NTB-A receptor was the only one which expression was not only simultaneously changed in patients' NK and T cells, but also significantly upregulated on CD16dimCD56bright NK cell and CD8+ cell subsets. Patients had also upregulated proportion of CD4+ T cells expressing PD-1. Thus, we suggest that an increased percentage of PD-1+ cells may represent an independent indirect mechanism of downregulation of antiviral response, separate from the reduction of NK cell activating receptors expression. Altogether, our studies indicate two possible mechanisms which may promote perpetuation of HSV infection: 1) selective inhibition of activating receptors on NK cells, but not on T cells, and 2) upregulation of checkpoint molecule PD-1 on CD4+ T cells.

Abstract
Genital herpes is one of the most commonly diagnosed sexually transmitted diseases and the most common factor in the formation of ulcers and erosions within the mucous membranes. It is characterized by a wide range of clinical symptoms from serous-filled blisters located on the erythematous and oedematous substrate to asymptomatic infection. Due to anatomical differences in the genital tract, there is a more than a 4-fold increase in the risk of a woman being infected by a partner than a man by a woman. In addition, the transmission of herpes simple virus from mother to foetus becomes a serious gynaecological and neonatal problem, especially in women of childbearing age. Despite epidemiological studies, the incidence of genital herpes has not been fully understood, probably due to lack of harmonization of disease reporting systems in many countries, and to difficulties in diagnosis and treatment.

Abstract
Background Among over 100 types of Herpesviridae viruses, eight can infect humans: herpes simplex viruses (HSV-1, HSV-2), varicella zoster virus (VZV), cytomegalovirus (CMV), Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), and human herpesviruses 6, 7, and 8 (HHV-6, HHV-7, HHV-8). After initial infection, the viruses remain latent for the lifetime of the host. The aim of this study was to determine the distribution of six different herpesviruses: HSV-1, HSV-2, VZV, EBV, CMV, and HHV-6 in trigeminal and facial nerve ganglia among a random group of Polish population. Methods The studied group consisted of 47 individuals (40 male, seven female); mean age of 47.4 ± 16.5 years) who died of independent causes (suicide, traffic accident, and poisoning, among others). Bilateral trigeminal and facial nerve ganglia of each cadaver were collected during the autopsy. Herpesviruses were detected using multiplex polymerase chain reaction technique. Results Herpesviruses were found in trigeminal and/or facial ganglia in 30/47 (63.8%) of cadavers. HHV-6 was the most prevalent of the herpesviruses and was found in nearly half of cadavers (n = 22; 46.8%), followed by HSV-1 (n = 7; 14.9%), VZV (n = 4; 8.5%), EBV (n = 4; 8.5%), HSV-2 (n = 2; 4.3%), and CMV (n = 1; 2.1%). Facial nerve ganglia (n = 23; 48.9%) were more often infected than trigeminal ganglia (n = 13; 27.7%). Discussion The results of this study have revealed a common presence of the herpesviruses in trigeminal and facial nerve ganglia among a random group of Polish population. Furthermore, the data also demonstrate simultaneous infection of the ganglia with different herpesviruses. This study has contributed to the knowledge of prevalence and localization of herpesviruses in different structures of the nervous system.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Infections caused by human α-herpesviruses usually have a benign course with recurrencies. However, they may become dangerous in immunocompromised hosts. In this case, molecular methods constitute a reliable diagnostic tool enabling rapid assessment of the efficacy of antiviral treatment strategies. OBJECTIVES We estimated the frequency of alphaherpesviral DNAemia and the viral load during early post-transplantation period after alloHSCT; we also analyzed association of the DNAemia and chosen parameters of the patients. STUDY DESIGN A cohort of 190 alloHSCT recipients from two hospitals in Warsaw, Poland, was examined weekly during 100-day early post-transplantation period using quantitative real time PCR assays. A total of 2475 sera samples were evaluated for the presence of α-herpesviral DNA in patients, of whom 117 (62%) received unrelated grafts, while the remaining 73 (38%) received grafts from sibling donors. All patients received standard antiviral prophylaxis with acyclovir. In the examined group, anti-HSV-1, anti-HSV-2 and anti-VZV IgGs were examined prior to transplantation, RESULTS: Within the study period, DNA of α-herpesviruses was detected in 44 patients (23.2%). Most patients tested positive for HSV-1 DNA (43 patients, 22.6%), single patient for HSV-2, and no patient positive for VZV. Clinical symptoms such as pneumonia, skin changes, elevated levels of aminotransferases were observed in five patients, four of these patients presented symptoms of GvHD at the same time. (2,6%). Statistics shows that GvHD (P<0.001) and matched unrelated donor as a source of HSCT (P=0.048) are associated with the development of HSV-1 DNAemia. CONCLUSIONS Although our data demonstrate frequent reactivation of HSV-1 in the early post-transplant period, the rate of symptomatic infections was low. We did not find association between HSV-1 viremia and mortality, but significant association with GvHD and donor source was observed.

Abstract
Background Herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) infection is the most common cause of genital ulcer disease (GUD) worldwide. Mother to child transmission causes high morbidity and mortality among infants. Russia is on the brink of a generalized HIV-epidemic, but Arkhangelsk is still a low-prevalence area. HSV-2 infection is associated with a three-fold increased risk of HIV-infection. The evidence on the seroprevalence of HSV-2 in Russia is limited. The aim of this study was to assess HSV-2 seroprevalence and correlates among young adults in the city of Arkhangelsk. Methods 1243 adults aged 18-39 years participated in a cross-sectional population-based study, recruited by a public opinion agency applying a quota sampling method to achieve a data set with similar age- and sex-distribution as the population in Arkhangelsk. All participants completed a standardized, self-administrated questionnaire and were tested for HSV-2. Associations between HSV-2 seropositivity and selected sociodemographic and behavioral factors, and self-reported history of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) were studied by multivariable logistic regression. Results HSV-2 seroprevalence was 18.8 %: 12.2 % (95 % confidence interval, CI 9.7-15.2) among men and 24.0 % (95 % CI 20.1-27.3) among women. Among men, HSV-2 positivity was associated with being divorced/widowed (OR = 2.85, 95 % CI 1.06-7.70), cohabitation (OR = 2.45, 95 % CI 1.07-5.62), and a history of STIs (OR = 2.11, 95 % CI 1.14-3.91). In women, HSV-2 positivity was associated with high income (OR = 3.11, 95 % CI 1.45-6.71) and having a lifetime number of sexual partners between 2 and 5 (OR = 2.72, 95 % CI 1.14-6.51), whereas sexual debut at age 18 years or older was inversely associated with the outcome (OR = 0.47, 95 % CI 0.31-0.72). In both sexes, increasing age was the strongest correlate of HSV-2 seropositivity in multivariable analyses. Conclusion The HSV-2 seroprevalence was twice as high in women than in men and increased with age in both sexes, and similar to that reported from high-prevalence countries in Europe and the USA. The high prevalence of HSV-2 among women in childbearing age reveals the potential for HSV-2 transmission from mothers to infants and increased risk of acquisition HIV-infection; it also contributes to the burden GUD among both sexes. This emphasizes the public health implications of the HSV-2 epidemic in an urban population in North-West Russia.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Genital herpes is an infection with herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) or type 2 (HSV-2), and is among the most common sexually transmitted diseases. METHODS AND OUTCOMES We conducted a systematic review and aimed to answer the following clinical questions: What are the effects of different oral antiviral treatments versus each other for a first episode of genital herpes in HIV-negative people? What are the effects of different antiviral treatments for genital herpes in HIV-positive people? We searched: Medline, Embase, The Cochrane Library, and other important databases up to October 2013 (Clinical Evidence reviews are updated periodically; please check our website for the most up-to-date version of this review). We included harms alerts from relevant organisations such as the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the UK Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA). RESULTS We found eight studies that met our inclusion criteria. We performed a GRADE evaluation of the quality of evidence for interventions. CONCLUSIONS In this systematic review we present information relating to the effectiveness and safety of the following interventions: aciclovir, famciclovir, and valaciclovir.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Prevalence of herpes simplex type 2 virus (HSV-2) is high worldwide. Previous studies in Uganda were rural or in women. We estimated age and sex-specific sero-prevalence of HSV-2 in Kampala, Uganda. METHODS Using two-stage random sampling stratified on population density, a survey of persons 15-65 years was conducted. Type-specific serological tests for HSV-2, HSV-1(HerpeSelect2 and 1 ELISA), HIV (Rapid tests and ELISA), syphilis (RPR and TPHA) were done. Additional prevalence analysis included post-stratification weighting on the Uganda 2002 Census gender distribution. RESULTS Among 1124 persons, HSV-2 prevalence was 58% (95% CI: 55, 60), HSV-1; 98% (95% CI: 97.6, 99.1), HIV; 17.7% (95% CI: 14.8, 19.2) and syphilis; 1.7% (95% CI: 1.4, 1.9). Weighted HSV-2 prevalence was 53.8% (Women; 63.8%, men; 43.2%), similar to unweighted data. Weighted HIV prevalence was 20.7% in women, 8.6% in men. Of 165 HIV infected persons, 85.4% had HSV-2. Risk factors for HSV-2 were being a woman (OR 2.0; 95% CI: 1.42, 2.78), age (OR 3.3; 95% CI: 2.43, 4.53), education (OR 1.70; 95% CI: 1.34, 2.34) and HIV (OR 4.5; 95% CI: 2.70, 7.50). CONCLUSION Prevalence of HSV-2 and HIV was high especially in women. Syphilis was rare. Awareness of herpes was low. Interventions in young people are needed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Human pathogens that can cause infertility may also affect sperm count and quality. Viral infections can be considered as direct and/or indirect cause of male factor infertility. OBJECTIVE Our goal was to investigate the prevalence of herpes simplex virus in the semen of infertile men attending the Avicenna Infertility Clinic, and to compare it with the herpes virus serology results. MATERIALS AND METHODS This cross sectional study was conducted during 2009-2010. Infertile men participating without any clinical signs of infection with herpes simplex virus, and no obvious cause for their infertility were included. Semen and blood samples were used for Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) and serologic testing for these people. Two samples were collected: one ml semen sample to verify the existence of genital herpes simplex virus in infertile men, and blood samples of 217 individuals tested for antibodies to herpes simplex virus. Data were analyzed by SPSS 16. RESULTS According to the PCR results of semen samples the prevalence of herpes simplex in semen was 12% and serologic test showed 3.2% prevalence within blood. Nine to 10% of IgM negative were PCR positive and only 2-3% of IgM positive were PCR positive. Between herpes serologic studies with positive controls and negative controls by using both tests, there was a significant positive relationship (r=0.718 and p<0.001). The relationship between semen PCR test results and serological survey of herpes patients with a negative control in both Pearson and Spearman tests was positive and significant (r=0.229 and p=0.001). Correlation between the PCR results of semen samples with two positive control subjects and a positive IgM test was statistically confirmed (r=0.235 and p<0.001). CONCLUSION We recommend that if there is suspicion to herpes simplex as a microorganism that theoretically could impact semen parameters and cause infertility it is prudent to use PCR technique on semen sample rather than ELISA on serum.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Published incidence rates of human salmonella infections are mostly based on numbers of stool culture-confirmed cases reported to public health surveillance. These cases constitute only a small fraction of all cases occurring in the community. The extent of underascertainment is influenced by health care seeking behaviour and sensitivity of surveillance systems, so that reported incidence rates from different countries are not comparable. We performed serological cross-sectional studies to compare infection risks in eight European countries independent of underascertainment. METHODS A total of 6,393 sera from adults in Denmark, Finland, France, Italy, Poland, Romania, Sweden, and The Netherlands were analysed, mostly from existing serum banks collected in the years 2003 to 2008. Immunoglobulin A (IgA), IgM, and IgG against salmonella lipopolysaccharides were measured by in-house mixed ELISA. We converted antibody concentrations to estimates of infection incidence ('sero-incidence') using a Bayesian backcalculation model, based on previously studied antibody decay profiles in persons with culture-confirmed salmonella infections. We compared sero-incidence with incidence of cases reported through routine public health surveillance and with published incidence estimates derived from infection risks in Swedish travellers to those countries. RESULTS Sero-incidence of salmonella infections ranged from 56 (95% credible interval 8-151) infections per 1,000 person-years in Finland to 547 (343-813) in Poland. Depending on country, sero-incidence was approximately 100 to 2,000 times higher than incidence of culture-confirmed cases reported through routine surveillance, with a trend for an inverse correlation. Sero-incidence was significantly correlated with incidence estimated from infection risks in Swedish travellers. CONCLUSIONS Sero-incidence estimation is a new method to estimate and compare the incidence of salmonella infections in human populations independent of surveillance artefacts. Our results confirm that comparison of reported incidence between countries can be grossly misleading, even within the European Union. Because sero-incidence includes asymptomatic infections, it is not a direct measure of burden of illness. But, pending further validation of this novel method, it may be a promising and cost-effective way to assess infection risks and to evaluate the effectiveness of salmonella control programmes across countries or over time.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Herpes simplex virus (HSV) infections are caused by 2 types of virus, HSV-1 and HSV-2. Both viruses are endemic worldwide. There are marked variations in the seroprevalences of HSV-1 and HSV-2 in Europe. The aim of this study was to determine the seroprevalence of HSV infections in Croatia. METHODS During a 3-y period (2008-2010), a total of 1672 patients were tested for the presence of HSV-1 and HSV-2 antibodies using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. RESULTS The overall immunoglobulin G (IgG) seroprevalence rates were 72.5% for HSV-1 and 9.9% for HSV-2. There was no significant difference in seropositivity between males and females for HSV-1 (72.0% vs 73.0%) or HSV-2 (8.9% vs 10.7%). HSV-1 seroprevalence increased from 26.4% in those aged 6 months-9 y to 89.9% in those aged 40?49 y, and remained stable thereafter, ranging from 87.4% to 91.5% (p < 0.001). HSV-2 IgG seropositivity increased progressively from 5.7% in participants aged 20-29 y to 26.5% in participants aged ≥ 60 y (p < 0.001). HSV-1 seroprevalence did not differ between participants residing in urban and rural areas (72.5% vs 72.6%). Urban place of residence was a significant factor for HSV-2 seroprevalence in univariate analysis, but after standardization for age, it was no longer significant. CONCLUSIONS Multiple logistic regression showed that age was a significant predictor of both HSV-1 and HSV-2 seropositivity, while female gender was a significant predictor of HSV-2 seropositivity. In pregnant women, obstetric history was not a significant predictor of either HSV-1 or HSV-2 seroprevalence.

RESULTS We found 35 systematic reviews, RCTs, or observational studies that met our inclusion criteria. We performed a GRADE evaluation of the quality of evidence for interventions. CONCLUSIONS In this systematic review we present information relating to the effectiveness and safety of the following interventions: antivirals, caesarean delivery, condoms, oral aciclovir, psychotherapy, recombinant glycoprotein vaccines, serological screening, and counselling.

Abstract
Salmonella is a frequent cause of foodborne illness. However, since most symptomatic cases are not diagnosed, the true infection pressure is unknown. Furthermore, national surveillance systems have different sensitivities that limit inter-country comparisons. We have used recently developed methods for translating measurements of Salmonella antibodies into estimates of seroincidence: the frequency of infections including asymptomatic cases. This methodology was applied to cross-sectional collections of serum samples obtained from the general healthy population in three European countries. Denmark and The Netherlands had the lowest seroincidence (84,169 infections/1000 person-years), whereas Poland had the highest seroincidence (547/1000 person-years). A Bayesian method for obtaining incidence rate ratios was developed; this showed a 6·3 (95% credibility interval 3·3-12·5) higher incidence in Poland than in Denmark which demonstrates that this methodology has a wider applicability for studies of surveillance systems and evaluation of control programmes.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine herpes simplex virus (HSV)-2 and HSV-1 seroprevalence in women and men in Romania. METHODS A cross-sectional seroprevalence survey was conducted between 2004 and 2005 on a total of 1058 women and men representative of the population of Bucharest. All participants were aged 15-44 years and completed a structured questionnaire. A blood sample was collected to detect IgG anti-HSV-1 and HSV-2 serum antibodies using the HerpeSelect ELISA (Focus Diagnostics). RESULTS A total of 761 women (median age 29 years) and 297 men (median age 29 years) were included. Overall, HSV-2 seroprevalence (15.2%) increased with age. Among women, HSV-2 seroprevalence increased from 11.0% in 15-19-year-olds to 38.3% in 40-44-year-olds. Among men, seroprevalence increased from 4.0% in 20-24-year-olds to 27.1% in 40-44-year-olds. HSV-2 seroprevalence was significantly higher among women than men (17.0% vs. 10.8%). HSV-1 seropositivity was high (87.2%) in all age groups, with no clear trend by age or by sex. In addition to older age and female sex, risk factors for HSV-2 included greater number of lifetime sexual partners, lower educational attainment, and history of genital vesicles. Lower educational level and rural residence were associated with a higher risk of HSV-1 seropositivity. CONCLUSIONS In Romania, HSV-2 seroprevalence was higher in women than men, and was within European limits and lower than that in Africa and the USA. In contrast, HSV-1 seroprevalence was generally higher than that previously recorded in similarly aged populations in Western Europe.

Abstract
Background There have been few population-based studies of the seroprevalence and correlates of herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) and type 2 (HSV-2) in Japan. Methods We enrolled a total of 1244 adults, aged 18–59 years, from a population-based cohort in southern Japan, and tested their serum samples using an ELISA kit containing HSV type-specific antigens to glycoproteins G1 and G2. Results The seroprevalence of HSV-1 and HSV-2 was 55.4% and 7.4% in men and 63.3% and 9.3% in women, respectively. Overall, 4 percent of the participants (2.3% of men and 5.0% of women) were co-infected with HSV-1 and HSV-2. The seroprevalences of both HSV-1 and HSV-2 increased with age in both sexes, and were always higher among women than among men in each age bracket. The prevalence of HSV-2 infection among HSV-1 infected individuals was lower than that among uninfected individuals, both in men and women. Male current drinkers, and male and female current smokers, were more likely to be infected with HSV-1 and HSV-2, as compared to never drinkers and never smokers, respectively. Conclusion It is hoped that the estimates produced in this study will help in understanding the burden of these infections in Japan.

Abstract
The aim was to study the type-specific seroprevalence of Herpes simplex virus (HSV)-1 and HSV-2 infections and the associated risk factors in children, adolescents and adults in Greece. A total of 1867 serum samples from children, adolescents and adults of both genders aged from 0 to 60 years were collected from three large hospital-referral centres in Athens. All sera were tested for type-specific antibodies to HSV-1 and HSV-2 using HerpeSelect IgG ELISA tests (Focus Diagnostics Cypress, Cal, USA). Overall age-adjusted seroprevalence of HSV-1 and HSV-2 was 72.0% and 10.2%, respectively. HSV-1 seropositivity was low in children up to nine years of age, increased sharply in adolescence, and was higher in females than males in each group surveyed. HSV-2 seropositivity was low (0.8%) below 20 years of age and increased to a maximum prevalence of 18.7% in men and 22.7% in women. Multivariate risk factor analyses indicated that HSV-1 seropositivity was associated with socioeconomic indicators (e.g. lower educational level, residency outside greater Athens), whereas HSV-2 was associated with sexual behavioural factors (e.g. being divorced, greater number of lifetime sexual partners). HSV-2 risk factor profiles were similar in women and in men. This first large seroprevalence study in Greece showed a high age-standardized HSV-1 seropositivity after adolescence and a relatively low age-standardized HSV-2 seroprevalence from birth to 60 years of age. Dual seropositivity to HSV-1 and HSV-2 was low (0.6%) in females under 20 years of age, suggesting that the potential use of an HSV-2 prophylactic vaccine in adolescents could reduce the spread of HSV-2 infection.

Abstract
Herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2), human papillomaviruses (HPVs), and Chlamydia trachomatis are the most common pathogens causing sexually transmitted infections (STIs). There is limited information about the prevalences of these STIs in Poland. Here, we estimated the occurrence of immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibodies against HSV-2, HPV, and C. trachomatis in 199 blood donors and 110 patients of both genders attending an STI clinic in Katowice in southern Poland. The seroprevalences of HSV-2 were 5% for blood donors and 14% in the STI cohort. The seroprevalences of the five potentially oncogenic HPV types 16, 18, 31, 35, and 51 were 15%, 7%, 5%, 5%, and 17%, respectively, in blood donors and 37%, 8%, 12%, 5%, and 21%, respectively, in the STI cohort. The majority of HPV-infected individuals showed antibodies against more than one type, i.e., had been infected with multiple HPV types. Anti-C. trachomatis IgG antibodies were detected in 6% of blood donors and 13% of individuals attending the STI clinic. The relatively high prevalence of HPV-51 may have implications for future vaccine programs, as the newly introduced HPV vaccines are based on the potentially oncogenic HPV types 16 and 18.

Abstract
BACKGROUND We undertook this study to estimate the prevalence and correlates of herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) among Mexican adolescents in high school. METHODS This was a cross-sectional analysis using data that had been collected to evaluate a school-based HIV prevention intervention. As part of the final round of evaluation, capillary blood samples were taken from volunteers to test for antibodies to HSV-2. The effect of each school's seroprevalence on the probability of an individual being seropositive was estimated, and the results were grouped by town to evaluate the association between characteristics of the locality and student HSV-2 seroprevalence. RESULTS Dried blood spots were collected for 80% of the 1607 participants in the survey who reported that they were sexually active. Of these samples, 21% tested positive for HSV-2 antibodies, with no significant difference in prevalence between men and women. Seroprevalence among schools ranged from 0 to 57%. The number of sex workers registered in the locality was the most important covariate of seroprevalence, with each additional female sex worker (FSW) per 1000 women between 18 and 45 years of age in the town associated with an increase of 1% in the seroprevalence of HSV-2. CONCLUSIONS Characteristics of adolescents' micro-environments that influence their pool of potential sexual partners and the likelihood that these partners are HSV-2 positive may be more important predictors of the risk of STI infection than self-reported condom use.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Genital herpes is an infection with herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) or type 2 (HSV-2), and is among the most common sexually transmitted diseases. METHODS AND OUTCOMES We conducted a systematic review and aimed to answer the following clinical questions: What are the effects of interventions to prevent sexual transmission of herpes simplex virus? What are the effects of interventions to prevent transmission of herpes simplex virus from mother to neonate? What are the effects of antiviral treatment in people with a first episode of genital herpes? What are the effects of interventions to reduce the impact of recurrence? What are the effects of treatments in people with genital herpes and HIV? We searched: Medline, Embase, The Cochrane Library and other important databases up to August 2006 (Clinical Evidence reviews are updated periodically, please check our website for the most up-to-date version of this review). We included harms alerts from relevant organisations such as the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the UK Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA). RESULTS We found 35 systematic reviews, RCTs, or observational studies that met our inclusion criteria. We performed a GRADE evaluation of the quality of evidence for interventions. CONCLUSIONS In this systematic review we present information relating to the effectiveness and safety of the following interventions: antivirals, caesarean delivery, condoms, oral acyclovir, psychotherapy, recombinant glycoprotein vaccines, serological screening, and counselling.
