Predictors of death and production performance of layer chickens in opened and sealed pens in a tropical savannah environment

BACKGROUND

Layer chickens are exposed to high risks of production losses and mortality with impact on farm profitability. The harsh tropical climate and severe disease outbreaks, poor biosecurity, sub-minimal vaccination and treatment protocols, poor management practices, poor chick quality, feed-associated causes, and unintended accidents oftentimes aggravate mortality and negatively affect egg production. The objectives of this study were to estimate the probability of survival and evaluate risk factors for death under different intensive housing conditions in a tropical climate, and to assess the production performance in the housing systems.

RESULTS

Daily mean mortality percentages and egg production figures were significantly lower and higher in the sealed pens and open houses (P < 0. 001) respectively. The total mean feed consumption/bird/day was similar for the open sided and sealed pens but the mean feed quantity per egg produce was significantly lower in the sealed pens ((P < 0.005). Seasons differently impacted on mortality with the hot-dry season producing significantly higher risk of mortality (61 times) and reduced egg production. Other parameters also differed except the egg production during the cold-dry season. Layers in sealed pens appear to have higher probability of survival and the Kaplan-Meir survival curves differed for each pen; ≥ 78 weeks old layer have higher probability of survival compared with the younger chickens and the 19-38 weeks age category are at highest risk of death (P < 0.001). The hazard-ratio for mortality of layers raised in sealed pens was 0.568 (56.8%).

CONCLUSION

Reasons for spiked mortality in layer chickens may not always be associated with disease. Hot-dry climatic environment is associated with heat stress, waning immunity and inefficient feed usage and increase probability of death with reduced egg production; usage of environmentally controlled building in conditions where environmental temperature may rise significantly above 25°C will reduce this impact. Since younger birds (19-38 weeks) are at higher risk of death due to stress of coming into production, management changes and diseases, critical implementation of protocols that will reduce death at this precarious period becomes mandatory. Whether older chickens' better protection from death is associated with many prophylactic and metaphylactic regimen of medications/vaccination will need further investigation.

Avian diseases which affect egg production and quality

This chapter addresses diseases and syndromes which have been shown, or are reported, to have adverse effects on egg production and quality. However, any disease of poultry can adversely affect egg production and quality indirectly, by affecting the health of the bird. The main topics are the effect on egg production and quality of bacteria (Salmonella, Mycoplasma, Escherichia coli, infectious coryza, Ornithobacterium, Gallibacterium, spirochaetosis), viruses (infectious bronchitis virus, egg drop syndrome, swollen head syndrome, avian encephalomyelitis, influenza, Newcastle disease, laryngotracheitis), syndromes (fatty liver haemorrhagic syndrome, cage layer osteoporosis) and toxic agents. A short section on clinical perspectives reports on information obtained from practising poultry veterinarians as such observations can provide valuable starting points for future research.

Parasitism and production in farm animals

The impact of internal and external parasitism on productivity of farm animals is considered for cattle, sheep, pigs and poultry. The parasitic challenge experienced and the outcome of that challenge is a dynamic one in which environment, management practices, including housing or grazing management, nutritional status, the host's ability to develop effective immunity and the speed with which this can occur, play a significant role. Much of our assessment of the impact of infection comes from pathophysiological and nutritional studies with contrived infestations. A common feature of all infestations is reduced efficiency of food utilization through reduction in food intake, though in some cases increases in nutrient requirement are induced as a result of damage to or loss of host tissue. Assessment of the impact on productivity in the field is technically very difficult and must take account of fluctuating challenge, determined by environmental and management decisions, and the manager's objectives for the performance of a particular category of livestock. This review attempts to integrate the assessment of losses in productivity based on pathophysiological studies with those based on protection of groups of livestock in production systems by regular pesticide use. Throughout the review the limitations inherent in both approaches and in our knowledge of how parasites impair productivity of the host are emphasised.

Rapid transmission of the protozoan parasite Histomonas meleagridis in turkeys and specific pathogen free chickens following cloacal infection with a mono-eukaryotic culture

In the present investigation, the pathogenicity and transmission of a mono-eukaryotic culture of Histomonas meleagridis for commercial turkeys and specific pathogen free (SPF) chickens is described for the first time. Two separate trials with the same kind of experimental design were performed, one with commercial turkeys and one with SPF chickens. In each experiment, two different groups were included, which were housed in separate rooms. The first group contained four control birds, whereas the second group consisted of 10 infected and four in-contact birds. The birds were infected via the cloaca at 14 days of age with 380,000 cells of a mono-eukaryotic culture of H. meleagridis consisting of a cloned isolate (Turkey/Austria/2922-66/04). Reisolation of the parasite from turkeys and chickens under experimental conditions was performed for the first time. The infected birds started to excrete the parasite as soon as 2 days post infection. Rapid spread of the parasite to in-contact turkeys and chickens was noticed, based on reisolation of live parasites. Reisolation of the pathogen was impossible from two of the four in-contact SPF chickens at any time, whereas all of the infected turkeys were found positive. Intermittent shedding of the parasite was noticed in infected turkeys and SPF chickens, but the phenomenon was much more severe in the SPF chickens as these birds survived the infection. All of the infected and in-contact turkeys died between days 11 and 14 post infection, whereas no death was recorded in the SPF chickens, which were killed 6 weeks after the infection. Typical lesions were recorded in the caeca and livers of the infected turkeys. In addition, a heavy destruction of the bursa of Fabricius was seen in all of the infected and one of the in-contact turkeys. Altogether, the present investigations are of importance for an understanding of the pathogenicity and transmission of H. meleagridis in poultry.

Blackhead disease (histomoniasis) in poultry: a critical review

After its discovery in 1893 in Rhode Island, blackhead disease was reported across the continent and soon in many other countries. It decimated the turkey industry in New England and followed production like a faithful shadow. Blackhead disease causes high mortality in turkeys, sometimes approaching 100% of a flock. In chickens, the mortality may be 10%-20% with high morbidity, although many outbreaks pass unnoticed. Early workers identified Histomonas meleagridis, a protozoan related to Entamoeba histolytica, Giardia lamblia, and Trichomonas, as the causative agent. Like many other parasites, its life cycle is complex, involving as an intermediate host, the common cecal worm Heterakis gallinarum. The necessity for bacteria for Histomonas to become virulent in the turkey and chicken, notably Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis, and Clostridium spp., was discovered by research in gnotobiotic birds. Changes in management brought the disease under control, although it remained the first cause of mortality in turkeys until modern antihistomonal products were developed after WWII. The ban of nitroimidazole products in the United States and Europe was followed by an upsurge in reported cases in turkeys and chickens. Immunization is not an option for prevention, as birds do not reliably become resistant to reinfection after suffering a primary exposure. Recent research demonstrated that histomoniasis could spread rapidly through a flock of turkeys by direct contact, probably involving the phenomenon of cloacal drinking. Direct transmission was not demonstrated for chickens, stressing dependence on H. gallinarum as the source of infection. The lack of suitable treatment drugs or vaccines emphasizes the importance of prevention by worm control and management.

Isolation of very virulent Marek's disease viruses from vaccinated chickens in Australia

Very virulent Marek's disease viruses (vvMDV), defined as isolates against which the herpesvirus of turkey (HVT) vaccine provide poor protection, have been isolated from poultry flocks in both the United States and Europe. Twenty-one samples from vaccinated Australian flocks, experiencing problems with excessive Marek's disease (MD), were tested for the presence of transmissible MD viruses (MDV). Of the 16 samples which contained a transmissible agent, 14 were pathogenic in chickens, based on the development of MD lesions or depression of the bursa/body weight ratio. Of the pathogenic isolates which have been successfully typed 10 were serotype 1, and one was serotype 2 MDV. Pathogenicity of isolates varied. Several isolates caused tumours in 20-30% of both vaccinated and unvaccinated chickens. Two isolates, MPF6 and MPF23, caused tumours in more than 50% of chickens. When MPF6 and MPF23 were tested in vaccine trials bivalent vaccine gave no better protection against development of MD lesions than a monovalent vaccine. Isolate MPF23 was so pathogenic that lesions were produced in all chickens, regardless of the vaccine protocol used. Therefore vvMDV have been isolated in Australia, and unlike the vaccines tested overseas, bivalent Australian vaccines do not appear to provide greater protection against these vvMDV.
