Impact of dairy cow personality traits and concentrate allowance on their response to training and adaptation to an automated milking system

The objectives of this study were to determine: 1) if dairy cow personality traits and concentrate allowance are associated with the behavior and performance of cows during training to use an automated milking system (AMS); and 2) if these factors were associated with the behavior and performance of cows after AMS training. Twenty-nine mid- to late-lactation Holstein cows (218 ± 49 DIM), who were milking on a rotary parlor and had never previously been milked in an AMS, were enrolled in this study. Cows were assigned to 1 of 2 dietary treatments, consisting of a basal partial mixed ration (PMR) common to both treatment groups, with a concentrate allowance (on dry matter basis) of: 1) 2.0 kg/d in the AMS (L-Tx); or 2) 6.0 kg/d in the AMS (H-Tx). Cows were trained to use the free-traffic AMS, with supervised milkings, over 72 h and were milked in this system for 63 d after training was complete. Variables relating to feeding behavior, milking activity, and production were measured from the start of AMS training until the end of the study. Between 42 and 63 d after AMS introduction, each cow was assessed for personality traits using a combined arena test consisting of exposure to a novel environment, novel object, and novel human. Principal components analysis of behaviors observed during the personality assessment revealed 2 factors (interpreted as boldness and activeness traits) that together explained 85% of the variance; each cow received a score for each trait. Associations between dietary treatment and personality traits with feeding behavior, milking activity, and production were analyzed using mixed-effect linear and logistic regression models. Cows with greater scores for the active trait produced less milk during the 3 d of AMS training compared with cows with lower scores. Within the H-Tx, more active cows had a 3.92 times greater risk of kicking off teat cups during AMS training than less active cows. However, during the 8 wk after training, more active cows had a 1.37 times lesser risk of teat cup kickoffs than those that were less active. Cows on the H-Tx produced 4.4 kg/d more energy-corrected milk compared with cows on the L-Tx in the 8 wk after training. During the 8 wk after AMS training the cows on the H-Tx consumed an average of 21.4 kg/d of PMR and were delivered 4.6 kg/d of AMS concentrate, while the L-Tx cows consumed 23.4 kg/d PMR and were delivered 2.0 kg/d of AMS concentrate. The results indicate that both dairy cow personality traits and AMS concentrate allocation influence their response to AMS training and subsequent feeding and milking behavior and production.

Effects of Early Lactation Milking Frequency in an Automated Milking System on Cow Performance

Automated milking systems (AMS) are increasingly adopted for dairy cow production, promoting individualized cow management dependent on factors like lactation stage, age, and productivity. The study objective was to investigate the effects of early lactation milking frequency on cows milked via AMS. Multiparous Holstein cows blocked by parity and due date were randomly assigned to treatments (n = 8 per treatment): three (3X) or six (6X) milkings per day (MPD). The experimental phase (EXP) was defined as 4 to 29 days in milk (DIM). The AMS settings were programed so 3X cows were limited to three MPD while 6X cows were allowed six MPD. Afterwards was the carry over phase (CO) ranging from 30 to 90 DIM; all cows were allowed up to six MPD. Measurements by the AMS included bodyweight, milk yield (MY), and pellet intake. Weekly composite milk samples were analyzed for macronutrient composition and fatty acid (FA) profile. Coccygeal blood was sampled at 3, 8 ± 1, and 13 ± 1 DIM; concentrations of blood plasma analytes were quantified. Greater MPD was achieved for 6X cows versus 3X cows during EXP, but similar during the CO. Daily MY was non-separable during the EXP while 6X cows in their third or greater lactation group (3 + LG) had greater MY than 3X cows of the same LG during the CO. Milk fat content and 4% fat-corrected MY were both greater for 6X, 3 + LG cows during the EXP compared to 3X, 3 + LG cows. Milk FA methyl esters (FAME) proportions were different between MPD groups, with 6X, 3 + LG cows having the lowest short, even-chain FA from de novo or post-absorptive origin. Differences in analytes indicated that 6X, 3 + LG cows experienced metabolic stress and incorporated greater FA from adipose tissue. Greater early lactation MPD in AMS may shift cow nutrient partitioning to support greater production in 3+ parity cows.

Farm-level nutritional factors associated with milk production and milking behavior on Canadian farms with automated milking systems

The objective of this study was to describe the nutritional strategies used on Canadian dairy farms with automated milking systems (AMS), both at the feed bunk and the concentrate offered at the AMS, as well as to determine what dietary components and nutrients, as formulated, were associated with milk production and milking behaviors on those farms. Formulated diets (including ingredients and nutrient content) and AMS data were collected from April 1, 2019, until September 30, 2020, on 160 AMS farms (eastern Canada [East] = 8, Ontario [ON] = 76, Quebec [QC] = 22, and western Canada [West] = 54). Both partial mixed ration (PMR) and AMS concentrate samples were collected from May 1 to September 30, 2019, on 169 farms (East = 12, ON = 63, QC = 42, West = 52). We collected AMS milking data for 154 herds. For each farm (n = 161), milk recording data were collected and summarized by farm to calculate average milk yield and components. Multivariable regression models were used to associate herd-level formulated nutrient composition and feeding management practices with milk production and milking behavior. Milk yield (mean ± SD = 37.0 ± 0.3 kg/d) was positively associated with the PMR ether extract (EE) concentration (+0.97 kg/d per percentage point [p.p.] increase) and with farms that fed barley silage as their major forage source (n = 16; +2.18 kg/d) as compared with haylage (n = 42), whereas farms that fed corn silage (n = 96; +1.23 kg/d) tended to produce more milk than farms that fed haylage. Greater milk fat content (4.09 ± 0.28%) was associated with a greater PMR-to-AMS concentrate ratio (+0.02 p.p. per unit increase) and total diet net energy for lactation (+0.046 p.p. per 0.1 Mcal/kg increase), but a lesser percentage of NFC of the PMR (-0.016 p.p. per p.p. increase of NFC percentage). Milk protein content (3.38 ± 0.14%) was positively associated with the forage percentage of the PMR (+0.003 p.p. per p.p. increase of forage percentage) and the total diet starch percentage (+0.009 p.p. per p.p. increase of starch percentage), but was negatively associated with farms feeding corn silage (-0.1 p.p. compared with haylage) as their major forage. Greater milking frequency (2.77 ± 0.40 milkings/d) was observed on farms with free-flow cow traffic systems (+0.62 milkings/d) and was positively associated with feed push-up frequency (+0.013 milkings/d per additional feed push-up), but negatively associated with PMR NFC content and forage percentage of the total ration (-0.017 milkings/d per p.p. increase of forage percentage). Lastly, greater milking refusal frequency (1.49 ± 0.82 refusals/d) was observed on farms with free-flow cow traffic systems (+0.84 refusals/d) and farms feeding barley silage (+0.58 refusals/d) than with guided flow and farms feeding either corn silage or haylage, respectively. These data give insight into the ingredients, nutrient formulations and type of diets fed on AMS dairy farms across Canada and the association of those factors with milk production and milking behaviors.

Effect of the Meal Interval Setting of an Automated Concentrate Feeding System on Feed Intake and Feeding Behavior in Fattening Hanwoo Steers

An automatic concentrate feeding system (ACFS) divides the day into several intervals, allowing cattle to consume a predetermined amount of concentrate mix per interval. This study investigated the impact of changing these intervals (four vs. six) in an ACFS on its precision in monitoring the feed intake and feeding behavior of fattening Hanwoo steers. The experiment, involving 29 fattening Hanwoo steers (688 ± 43.3 kg of body weight, 24 months old), employed a switchback design with two interval settings: four and six per day. Both individual forage and concentrate intakes and feeding behaviors were automatically recorded; however, the ACFS measured feed supply, not actual intake. The precision of the ACFS's intake recordings was tested by manually assessing feed residuals per visit using video recordings. Although no difference was observed in the concentrate intake (p > 0.05), the six-interval setting reduced concentrate residuals by 0.2 kg per visit (p < 0.05). The increased interval setting also resulted in fewer visits for forage consumption and decreased forage and total dry matter intakes (p < 0.05). In conclusion, the increased interval setting for the ACFS reduced the visit frequency for forage consumption and actual forage consumption while improving the precision of the ACFS's intake recordings.

Geographical trends for automatic milking systems research in non-pasture-based dairy farms: A scoping review

Automatic milking system (AMS) adoption in the United States is trending upward, with issues such as lower availability and increased cost of labor being factors frequently listed as motives for AMS implementation. In addition, more interest in precision dairy farming by the new generation of farmers may also help increase AMS adoption. The objective of this scoping review was to characterize the nature of the literature investigating non-pasture-based AMS and the opportunities and challenges for future research. The eligibility criteria included studies published in or after the year 2000, with full text in English, of at least 500 words, examining various outcomes related to AMS in non-pasture-based dairy farms. Six electronic databases were searched: Biosis (Web of Science), CAB Abstracts (CAB Direct), Medline (PubMed), PubAg, AGRIS (FAO), and Scopus (Elsevier). The review focused on studies with objectives, characteristics, farms, and AMS information. A total of 4,292 titles and abstracts were screened, and 536 studies were finally included. Most of the studies were conducted in Europe (73.5%), among commercial herds (67.9%), comprising Holstein cows (57.7%), using Lely and DeLaval brands (45.4% vs. 39.7%), with free-flow traffic (52.7%). The main research topics investigated were milk production, milk composition, and AMS efficiency, followed by behavior and welfare, health disorders (especially mastitis), and nutrition in Europe and other regions. At the same time, in the United States, trends were similar, except for nutrition. Since 2016, there has been an increased interest in studies on energy and water consumption, technological development, environment (enteric emissions), reproduction, genetics, and longevity or culling. However, the small number of studies and unclear characterization of what is optimum for reproductive management, other health disorders, economics, and water and energy consumption suggest a need for future research.

Comparing steam-flaked and pelleted barley grain in a feed-first guided-flow automated milking system for Holstein cows

Provision of a palatable feed in automated milking systems (AMS) is considered an essential motivating factor to encourage voluntary visits to the milking stall. Although the quantity and composition of AMS concentrates have been previously investigated, the form of the concentrate has not been extensively evaluated. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of feeding pelleted (PB; 132.9 ± 56 DIM, 47.4 ± 9.51 kg/d milk yield) versus steam-flaked barley (SFB; 133.0 ± 63 DIM, 40.5 ± 8.23 kg/d milk yield) in an AMS on dry matter intake, AMS visits, milk and milk component yield, and partial mixed ration (PMR) feeding behavior. Twenty-nine Holstein cows of varying parities were enrolled in this study. Cows were housed in freestall housing with a feed-first guided-flow barn design; 7 cows were housed in a separate freestall pen to enable individual PMR intake and feeding behavior monitoring. This study was conducted as a 2-way crossover, with two 21-d periods in which each cow received the same basal PMR but was offered 2 kg/d (dry matter basis) of PB or SFB in the AMS. Cows receiving the SFB had fewer voluntary AMS visits (2.71 vs. 2.90 ± 0.051, no./d), tended to have a longer interval between milkings (541.7 vs. 505.8 ± 21.02 min), spent more time in the holding pen before entering the AMS (139.9 vs. 81.2 ± 11.68 min/d), and had lower total box time (19.7 vs. 21.4 ± 0.35 min/d) than cows fed PB. Despite changes in AMS attendance, there were no differences for average milk (44.0 kg/d), fat (1.62 kg/d), and protein (1.47 kg/d) yields or AMS concentrate intake (2.02 kg/d). These behavioral changes indicate that offering SFB as an alternative to PB may reduce motivation for cows to voluntarily enter the AMS.

The effects of feeding a high-fiber or high-starch pellet at two daily allocations on feed intake patterns, rumen fermentation, and milk production of mid-lactation dairy cows

The objective of this experiment was to determine the effect of pellet type and feeding amount on feeding behavior, dry matter intake, rumen fermentation, and milk production of lactating dairy cows. An experimental diet was formulated to provide an adequate amount of nutrients to a 650-kg cow producing 40 kg of milk per day, with a portion of the diet removed as a high-fiber (33.2% neutral detergent fiber; F) or high-starch (56.8% starch; S) pellet. Pellets were fed at a low (1 kg; L) or high (3 kg; H) amount twice per day alongside a partial mixed ration (PMR). Four complementary PMR were formulated for each pellet treatment such that the overall diet (pellet + PMR) offered to the cows was the same among all treatments. Eight ruminally cannulated cows were used in a 4 × 4 Latin square design with 14-d periods. Cows were fed PMR once daily at 1200 h, and pellet twice daily at 0600 and 1800 h. Data and samples were collected on d 11 to 14 of each period. By design there was a difference in pellet intake between the H and L treatments (5.31 vs. 1.81 kg/d), and PMR intake was reduced when H pellet was fed (22.9 vs. 25.3 kg/d); however, feeding H tended to increase total dry matter intake. Feed disappearance, which was measured as the amount of PMR consumed every 3 h following PMR delivery, was affected by the nutrient composition of the PMR as cows fed S (with high-fiber PMR) consumed 28.6% of their PMR intake within 3 h of delivery, whereas cows fed F (with high-starch PMR) consumed 33.5%. Duration that pH was below 5.8 tended to be lower when cows were fed the S pellet (270 vs. 125 min/d) compared with F. In addition, feeding the S pellet (with high-fiber PMR) decreased plasma concentrations of glucose (66.0 vs. 70.0 mg/dL) and insulin (1.90 vs. 2.25 ng/mL) compared with F. These results suggest that the composition of the PMR dictates rumen fermentation to a greater extent than composition of pellets. The S pellet was fed alongside a high-fiber PMR, which was more filling in the rumen, less fermentable, and contained more neutral detergent fiber. Although no difference was observed in milk production among treatments, the fact that feed intake pattern and rumen fermentation are better explained by nutrient composition of the PMR should be considered when formulating diets for lactating cows fed pellet and PMR, such as those milked with automated milking systems.

Features of concentrate feeding in an automatic milking system with free cow traffic

The objective of this research was to study the main factors influencing the consumption of concentrate depending on the daily milk yield in an automatic milking system (AMS) with free cow traffic. The researchers obtained data by visiting AMS from 227 lactating Holstein dairy cows for 30 days. For a more complete characterization of milking activity and feeding concentrate during milking in the AMS, the cows were divided into 6 groups: with a milk yield less than 20.0 kg, 20.1–25.0, 25.1–30.0, 30.1–35.0, 35.1–40.0 and more than 40.1 kg per day. With an increase in milk production, the allocation of concentrate in the milking box increases (P<0.001). So, with a daily milk yield of 17.6 ± 0.5 kg, 4.93 ± 0.13 kg of concentrate was allocated, 23.0 ± 0.3 kg – 6.10±0.11 kg of, 27.9 ± 0.2 kg – 6.93 ± 0.09 kg, 32.7 ± 0.2 – 7.50 ± 0.15 kg, 37.3 ± 0.3 – 7.68 ± 0.29 kg and with a daily milk yield of 42.9 ± 0.4 kg allocated 8.00 ± 0.30 kg of concentrate. Wherein, the milking frequency between groups increases from 2.9 ± 0.1 to 3.1 ± 0.1 times a day. Box-visiting time has a significant impact on the consumption of concentrate. So, when visiting a milking box with a duration of 6.09 ± 0.42 min, cows consumed 4.53 kg of concentrate, with 6.96 ± 0.27 min (P<0.05) – 5.89 kg, 7.09 ± 0.22 min (P<0.05) – 6.51 kg, 7.25 ± 0.26 min (P<0.05) – 6.83 kg, 8.06 ± 0.40 min (P<0.01) – 7.08 kg and when the duration of the visit was 8.07 ± 0.31 min (P<0.01), animals consumed 7.39 kg of concentrate. Thus, we found that the cows of all productivity groups did not completely consume the concentrate allocated in AMS.

Effects of concentrate location on the behavior and production of dairy cows milked in a free-traffic automated milking system

The objective of this study was to determine whether the amount of concentrate allowance in an automated milking system (AMS) affects partial mixed ration (PMR) sorting behavior, milking activity, and production of lactating dairy cows fed isocaloric diets. Fifteen primiparous Holstein cows were used in a crossover design with 28-d periods, including 14 d of adaptation and 14 d of data collection. The cows were housed in a freestall pen with free-traffic access to the AMS. Treatments consisted of a higher-concentrate PMR (H-PMR) with a pelleted concentrate allowance of 3.0 kg/d on a dry matter (DM) basis in the AMS, or a lower-concentrate PMR (L-PMR) with a pelleted concentrate allowance of 6.0 kg/d in the AMS. As designed, cows on the L-PMR had greater AMS concentrate intake (6.3 vs. 3.1 kg/d of DM) compared with the H-PMR. The standard deviation for mean concentrate intake among days increased from 0.38 to 1.0 kg/d with greater targeted AMS concentrate intake. When fed the L-PMR diet, PMR intake was reduced compared with when cows were fed the H-PMR diet (17.1 vs. 19.1 kg/d of DM). The reduction in PMR intake was compensated for by greater AMS concentrate intake; thus, cows on the L-PMR had greater total dry matter intake (DMI; 23.6 vs. 22.3 kg/d). Cows sorted against long (>19 mm) and fine (<4 mm) PMR particle fractions, and in favor of medium (8 to 19 mm) and short (4 to 8 mm) PMR fractions when on the H-PMR treatment, but only sorted against the medium and in favor of the short PMR fractions on the L-PMR treatment. PMR eating rate and total time spent eating PMR did not differ significantly between the 2 treatments; however, meal size tended to be larger when cows were fed the H-PMR compared with the L-PMR (2.2 vs. 2.1 kg DM/meal). Cows tended to spend 30.8 min/d more time lying down when fed the L-PMR. On the L-PMR treatment, cows tended to have more voluntary AMS visits (5.9 vs. 4.6 visits/d), were fetched less (0.1 vs. 0.5 times daily), and had a greater milking frequency (3.5 vs. 3.0 milkings/d) compared with when they were on the H-PMR treatment. However, milk yield was not affected by treatment. These data suggest that allocating a greater proportion of total dietary concentrate to the AMS, in a free-traffic setup, may improve milking activity and decrease the need for fetching, as well as promoting greater amounts of and maintaining consistency in total dry matter consumption.
