Effect of pre- and postpartum supplementation of a pure glycerol product to dairy cows on feeding behavior, lying behavior, and reticulorumen pH

The objective of this study was to quantify the effects of supplementing a low level of dry glycerol product pre- and postpartum on the feeding behavior, lying behavior, and reticulorumen pH of dairy cows. Multiparous Holstein dairy cows (n = 60) were enrolled in a 2 × 2 factorial design study. Twenty-one days before expected parturition, cows individually received a dry cow diet with (1) 250 g/d glycerol supplementation (GLY; 66% pure glycerol, United States Pharmacopeia grade), or (2) no supplementation (CON). Following parturition, cows were individually assigned to either (1) 250 g/d glycerol product (GLY; 66% pure glycerol), or (2) no supplementation (CON) to their partial mixed ration (PMR) for the first 21 d in milk (DIM). All cows were milked by an automated milking system and offered a target of 5.4 kg/d pellet (23% of target total dry matter intake [DMI]). For both treatment periods, cows were individually assigned to automated feed bins to measure PMR feeding behavior. Rumination time and lying behavior were monitored with electronic sensors for the whole study (-21 to 21 DIM). Reticulorumen pH boluses were administered to a subset of cows (n = 40) where pH was recorded every 10 min from 21 d prepartum to 21 d postpartum. Prepartum, cows fed GLY had fewer, larger meals and spent 20.2% more time feeding than CON while consuming feed at a similar rate. Cows on the CON diet prepartum spent more time lying down in more frequent bouts in the 21 d before calving. Following parturition, cows that received GLY prepartum continued to devote more time to eating, while tending to spend less time ruminating per kilogram of DMI. Cows receiving CON postpartum had larger meals with longer intervals between meals. In the first 21 DIM, cows receiving CON prepartum tended to have shorter, but significantly more frequent, lying bouts than cows fed GLY prepartum. Glycerol supplementation pre- and postpartum resulted in less time spent lying down following parturition. Minimal differences between treatments were observed for pre- and postpartum sorting behavior or reticulorumen pH. Overall, supplementation of glycerol pre- and postpartum altered cow time budgets, with cows spending more time eating pre- and postpartum, less time lying pre- and postpartum, and having fewer, larger meals prepartum when receiving glycerol prepartum, and with cows having slower feeding rates and smaller meals following parturition with postpartum glycerol supplementation.

Farm-level nutritional factors associated with milk production and milking behavior on Canadian farms with automated milking systems

The objective of this study was to describe nutritional strategies utilized on Canadian dairy farms with automated milking systems (AMS), both at the feed bunk and the concentrate offered at the AMS, as well as to determine what dietary components and nutrients, as formulated, were associated with milk production and milking behaviors on those farms. Formulated diets, including ingredients and nutrient content, and AMS data were collected from April 1, 2019, until September 30, 2020, on 160 AMS farms (Eastern Canada [East] = 8, Ontario [ON] = 76, Quebec [QC] = 22, and Western Canada [West] = 54). Both partial mixed ration (PMR) and AMS concentrate samples were collected from May 1 to September 30, 2019, on 169 farms (East = 12, ON = 63, QC = 42, West = 52). AMS milking data were collected for 154 herds. For each farm (n = 160), milk recording data were collected and summarized by farm to calculate average milk yield and components. Multivariable regression models were used to associate herd-level formulated nutrient composition and feeding management practices with milk production and milking behavior. Milk yield (37.0 ± 0.3 kg/d) was positively associated with the PMR ether extract (EE) concentration (PMR % EE; +0.97 kg/d per percentage point (p.p.) increase) and with farms that fed barley silage as their major forage source on farm (n = 16; +2.18 kg/d) compared with haylage (n = 42), while farms that fed corn silage (n = 96; +1.23 kg/d) tended to produce more milk than farms that fed haylage. Greater milk fat content (4.09 ± 0.28%) was associated with greater PMR-to-AMS concentrate ratio (+0.02 p.p. per unit increase) and total diet net energy for lactation (+0.046 p.p. per 0.1 Mcal/kg increase), but lesser % non-fiber carbohydrates (NFC) of the PMR (-0.016 p.p. per p.p. increase of % NFC). Milk protein content (3.38 ± 0.14%) was positively associated with forage % of the PMR (+0.003 p.p. per p.p. increase of % forage) and total diet % starch (+0.009 p.p. per p.p. increase of % starch), but negatively associated with farms feeding corn silage (-0.1 p.p. compared with haylage) as their major forage. Greater milking frequency (2.77 ± 0.40 milkings/d) was observed on farms with free-flow cow traffic systems (+0.62 milkings/d) and positively associated with feed push-up frequency (+0.013 milkings/d per additional feed push-up), while being negatively associated with PMR NFC content and % forage of the total ration (-0.017 milkings/d per p.p. increase of % forage). Lastly, greater milking refusal frequency (1.49 ± 0.82 refusals/d) was observed on farms with free-flow cow traffic systems (+0.84 refusals/d) and farms feeding barley silage (+0.58 refusals/d) than guided flow and farms feeding either corn silage or haylage, respectively. These data give insight into the ingredients, nutrient formulations and type of diets fed on AMS dairy farms across Canada and the association of those factors with milk production and milking behaviors.

Effect of pre- and postpartum supplementation of a pure glycerol product to dairy cows on feed intake, metabolic markers, and milk yield and components

The objective of this study was to quantify the effects of supplementing transition dairy cows with a low inclusion dry glycerol product in the pre- and postpartum periods on feed intake, metabolic markers, and milk yield and components. Multiparous Holstein dairy cows (n = 60) were enrolled in a 2-by-2 factorial design study. Starting 21 d before expected parturition, cows individually received a dry cow diet with (1) 250 g/d glycerol product supplementation [66% pure glycerol (United States Pharmacopeia grade); GLY], or (2) no supplementation (CON) mixed to their total mixed ration. After parturition, cows, again, were individually assigned to either GLY, or (2) no supplementation (CON) to their partial mixed ration for the first 21 d in milk (DIM). Cows were milked by an automated milking system and offered a target of 5.4 kg DM/d pellet (23% of target total dry matter intake, DMI) in the automated milking system and followed for 42 d into lactation. Blood samples were collected 6.3 ± 3.47 d before calving for all blood measures and 3, 7, 10, and 14 DIM for analysis of glucose and β-hydroxybutyrate, as well as 3 and 7 DIM for nonesterified fatty acids (NEFA) and haptoglobin. Initial dry cow body weight (BW), calf birth weight, previous 305-d milk, and month of parturition were used as covariates in the statistical model. Cows supplemented with GLY prepartum lost less BW and consumed more DMI pre- and postpartum, as well as had lower postpartum blood β-hydroxybutyrate and NEFA concentrations compared with those fed the CON treatment prepartum. Cows supplemented with GLY postpartum had lesser DMI in the first 42 DIM than cows fed CON postpartum, but also had reduced blood NEFA concentrations, odds of a high haptoglobin test, odds of a low blood glucose test, and lesser preformed fatty acid concentrations and yields in their milk. Cows supplemented glycerol both pre- and postpartum lost the least total BW from -21 to 21 DIM. No treatment effects were detected for milk yield; however, cows receiving GLY postpartum had lower milk fat. Overall, glycerol supplementation during the transition period, particularly during the 21 d before calving, was associated with markers of improved metabolic status.

Navel healing in male and female Holstein calves over the first 14 days of life: A longitudinal cohort study

The objectives of this study were (1) to describe navel healing in male and female neonatal Holstein calves over a 14-d observation period, and (2) to determine the associations of dam parity, calving factors, and calf factors with navel measurements and time to healing. A total of 68 Holstein calves (43 female and 25 male) were enrolled. Navel healing outcomes (cessation of navel discharge, navel cord remnant drying, navel cord remnant drop-off) and navel stump measurement outcomes (proximal diameter, distal diameter, length) were recorded every 24 ± 1 h for a 14-d observation period. Data were also collected for dam parity, calving factors (time of birth, calving ease), and calf factors (calf sex, calf vitality at birth, birth weight, average daily gain, serum total protein, and medical treatment or treatments). The mean time to navel cord remnant drying was 2 d, and all calves had dry navels by d 5. A total of 56% of calves retained their navel cord remnant beyond the end of the observation period, and calves began to shed their navel cord remnants as early as d 2. In addition, at least once during the observation period, 85% of calves had a proximal navel diameter measurement over a 13-mm threshold recently proposed to identify navel infections. For distal navel diameter measurements, 72% of calves had a diameter over the 13-mm threshold at least once during the observation period. No associations were identified between navel healing outcomes and dam, calving, and calf factors. Navel measurement outcomes were associated with calving and calf factors. Specifically, proximal navel stump diameter was associated with the day of observation (decreased from d 5 to 14), calf sex (smaller in female calves), time of birth (larger in calves born overnight or unobserved, compared with the morning), and birth weight (larger in birth weights >44.1 kg compared with <38.5 kg). Distal navel stump diameter was associated with calf sex, medical treatment, and day of observation; however, we observed an interaction between sex and day of observation (larger in male calves on d 3 to 7, d 9, and d 12, compared with female calves), and sex and medical treatment (larger in untreated male calves, no difference between treated male and female calves). Navel stump length was associated with time of birth (longer in calves born overnight or unobserved compared with any other time) and the interaction of birth weight and day of observation (longer in birth weights >44.1 kg compared with 38.6-41.5 kg on d 3, 8-10, and 13, and 41.6-44.0 kg on d 3, 5, 7-8, and 13). The wide range in time to navel cord remnant drying and drop-off suggest that these measures may not be adequate indicators of calf age on their own. More research on navel healing is required to improve our understanding of factors that influence navel measurements and time to healing, as well as how this information could be used in an objective assessment of navel health.

An investigation of blood, milk, and urine test patterns for the diagnosis of ketosis in dairy cows in early lactation

Ketosis in dairy cattle is primarily diagnosed based on the concentrations of ketone bodies in the blood, milk, or urine. Cow-side tests using these fluids are available for rapid detection of elevated concentrations of ketone bodies. Although these tests have been extensively validated, the performance of different tests has not been compared over time. Our objectives were to investigate the relationship between point-of-care diagnostic tests measuring the concentrations of β-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) in blood (BT; Precision Xtra, Abbott Laboratories), BHB in milk (MT; Keto-Test, Elanco), and acetoacetate (AcAc) in urine (UT; Ketostix, Bayer Corporation) through cases of ketosis. Holstein cows (n = 148) were screened daily for hyperketonemia (HYK; blood BHB ≥1.2 mmol/L) from 3 to 16 d in milk (DIM); moreover, milk and urine samples were collected concomitantly and tested for ketones (ketosis thresholds: 100 µmol/L milk BHB and 5 mg/dL urine AcAc). Of the animals screened (n = 148), 74% were diagnosed with HYK. When diagnosed with HYK, cows were treated with propylene glycol orally once daily for 5 d. After the day of diagnosis (d 0), hyperketonemic cows were retested with BT, MT, and UT for 3 d (d 1, 2, and 3). We assessed the diagnostic test performance and time to ketosis (survival analyses and Cox proportional hazards models) of MT and UT compared with BT. Considering all paired samples (before and after diagnosis of HYK), MT had 61% sensitivity and 91% specificity, whereas the UT had 77% sensitivity and 94% specificity compared with BT. The specificity of MT and UT increased from d 0 to d 1, decreased on d 2, and increased on d 3. The median time to diagnosis of ketosis in blood was 5 DIM (95% CI 5 to 7 DIM); moreover, MT and UT had 2 d greater median time to diagnosis of ketosis compared with the BT [7 DIM (6 to 11 d); and 7 DIM (6 to 13 d), respectively]. We concluded that the UT is a more sensitive predictor of blood BHB concentration than the MT. The UT and MT tests diagnosed ketotic cows approximately 2 d later than the BT. The possible consequences of delay in detection of ketosis in milk and urine should be investigated.

A scoping review of the analytical literature concerning nonambulatory dairy cattle

Nonambulatory dairy cattle pose a complex problem due to the challenges associated with prevention, appropriate treatment and management, and arriving at an accurate prognosis. There is a breadth of literature regarding this topic, of which there is currently no formal synthesis. The objective of this scoping review was to describe and characterize the literature investigating risk factors, sequela, preventions, treatments, and prognostic factors for nonambulatory conditions in dairy cattle, with the intent of qualitatively synthesizing knowledge of the topic and identifying gaps in the literature. A literature search was conducted in 6 databases and 2 conference proceeding archives, which returned 7,568 unique articles. Initial screening of abstracts resulted in 1,544 articles reviewed at the full-text stage, of which 379 were included for data extraction. Over 75% of the included literature was published after 1980, and the most common countries in which these studies took place were the United States (n = 72), Canada (18), Sweden (17), and Germany (17). Common eligibility criteria used for inclusion were geographic region (97) and parity (92). Of the 379 studies included in this review, 144 were randomized controlled trials and 235 were observational studies. The majority of the controlled trials assessed prevention of nonambulatory conditions (116), most commonly through supplementation of vitamin D (27) and calcium (25) or the provision of anionic salts (22). Of the 28 studies focusing on treatment of nonambulatory conditions, 26 focused on calcium administration. Becoming nonambulatory was evaluated as an outcome in 165 of the observational studies. Frequently measured risk factors for becoming nonambulatory included hematological variables, such as blood calcium (73), phosphorus (53) and magnesium (42), and other factors such as parity (35) and breed (22). Recovery from a nonambulatory condition was the outcome in 31 of the observational studies, with commonly measured prognostic indicators being calcium (9), phosphorus (9), and duration of recumbency (7). Nonambulatory disorders were measured as risk factors in 53 of the observational studies, with the most commonly assessed outcomes including disorders of the transition period (11), and death or euthanasia (11). The most common terms used to describe nonambulatory conditions were "milk fever" (199) and "parturient paresis" (147). These terms were only further defined with explicit symptomatic criteria in 193 of the 379 studies in this review. Recumbency was the most commonly used of these criteria (144), followed by inability to rise (55). Potential gaps in the literature concerning nonambulatory dairy cattle that were identified in the present review included investigation of prognostic indicators for recovery from nonambulatory conditions that are applicable on farm, treatment alternatives to calcium administration, and guidance regarding the appropriate usage of terms meant to categorize nonambulatory dairy cattle.

Reducing milking frequency from twice to once daily as an adjunct treatment for ketosis in lactating dairy cows-A randomized controlled trial

This randomized controlled trial investigated the effects of temporarily reducing milking frequency (MF) on the resolution of ketosis and milk production in dairy cows in early lactation. To detect ketosis [blood β-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) ≥1.2 mmol/L], Holstein cows were screened daily from 3 to 16 d in milk using a cow-side meter. Cows diagnosed with ketosis (n = 104) were randomly assigned to twice-daily milking (TDM) or reduced to once-daily milking (ODM) for 2 wk, then returned to twice-daily milking. Both treatment groups received a 5-d treatment of an oral propylene glycol drench (PG; 300 g) beginning on the afternoon of the diagnosis; cows received additional 5-d PG treatments if they had a ketotic test result (blood BHB ≥1.2 mmol/L) at least 4 d after finishing the first PG treatment. Blood BHB tests were conducted for the first 3 d after ketosis diagnosis, and then once every 3 d for 21 d of trial (DOT). Milk and milk component data were collected weekly for 15 wk following trial enrollment. The ODM group showed rapidly and markedly decreased blood BHB concentrations (primiparous cows: 1 DOT, 0.92 ODM vs. 1.22 TDM, 15 DOT, 0.55 vs. 0.81 mmol/L; multiparous cows: 1 DOT, 1.01 vs. 1.40, 15 DOT, 0.78 vs. 1.65 mmol/L). In addition, a logistic regression model indicated that ODM cows were less likely to have blood BHB concentrations ≥1.2 mmol/L [primiparous cows: 3 DOT: ODM 1% (95% confidence interval: 0-10%) vs. TDM 43% (30-58%), 15 DOT ODM 0% (0-0.2%) vs. TDM 22% (13-36%); multiparous cows: 3 DOT: ODM 33% (24-44%) vs. TDM 59% (48-69%), 15 DOT ODM 20.9% (13-31%) vs. TDM 64% (53-74%)]. The proportion of ODM cows that required additional treatments of PG were substantially lower than the TDM group (ODM: 39%; TDM: 64%) than the TDM cows during the initial 21-d period. However, during the 2-wk treatment period, cows in the ODM group produced 26% less milk and 25% less energy-corrected milk than the TDM cows. During wk 3 to 15, when all cows were milked twice daily, ODM cows produced less milk (-14%) and energy-corrected milk (-12%) compared with the TDM group. Milk protein percentage was greater, and milk fat percentage and linear score tended to be greater in the ODM group over 15 wk. In conclusion, a 2-wk reduction of MF in ketotic cows from twice to once daily with treatment with PG resolved ketosis and decreased blood BHB concentrations more effectively than treating TDM cows with PG alone. However, the 2-wk MF reduction had immediate and long-term (up to 13 wk after cessation of MF reduction) negative effects on milk production.

Factors influencing how Canadian dairy producers respond to a downer cow scenario

Understanding how downer cattle are managed allows for the evaluation of strengths and weaknesses in these practices, which is an important step toward improving the care these animals receive. The objective of this cross-sectional study was to analyze factors associated with the care and management of downer cattle by Canadian dairy producers. Data were obtained from the 2015 National Dairy Study, and analysis was limited to the 371 respondents completing the downer cow scenario. The scenario described a downer cow that the producer wanted to keep in their herd but must be moved, and was followed by questions addressing the cow's care and management. Using multivariable logistic regression models, associations between respondent demographics and farm characteristics, and the presence of downer cow protocols, we assessed decisions regarding euthanasia and use of behavioral prognostic indicators. Written downer cow protocols were reported by 18.2% of respondents, 67% indicated that they had a nonwritten protocol, and 14.8% reported that they did not have a protocol (either written or nonwritten). Respondents from western provinces were more likely to have a written protocol than those from Ontario. Nineteen percent of the respondents with a written or unwritten protocol reported veterinary involvement in developing their downer cow protocol, which occurred more commonly on farms with more frequent herd health visits and a good producer-veterinarian relationship. An area to move a downer cow to was present on 88% of farms, with respondents who were farm staff being less likely to report having knowledge of a designated area than respondents who were the farm owner. In addition, approximately half (45%) of respondents reported moving downer cattle with hip lifters as their most common method. Behavioral prognostic indicators chosen by respondents were associated with the respondent's geographic region, age, farm size, and education. Most notably, older respondents were more likely to use appetite, and less likely to use attitude, as a prognostic indicator compared with younger respondents. Using perceived pain as a prognostic indicator was more common among respondents from western and Atlantic provinces compared with respondents from Ontario, and more common among respondents with a college or university education. These results highlighted herd and farmer demographics that were associated with how Canadian dairy producers managed downer cattle in 2015 and could be used as a benchmark for evaluating how these management practices compare with those currently implemented.

Farm-level factors associated with lameness prevalence, productivity, and milk quality in farms with automated milking systems

Impaired locomotion (lameness) may negatively affect the ability and desire of cows to milk voluntarily, which is a key factor in success of automated milking systems (AMS). The objective of this study was to identify factors associated with herd-level lameness prevalence and associations of lameness and other farm-level factors with milking activity, milk yield, and milk quality in herds with AMS. From April to September 2019, 75 herds with AMS in Ontario, Canada, were visited, and data on barn design and farm management practices were collected. Data from AMS were collected, along with milk recording data, for the 6-mo period before farm visits. Farms averaged 98 ± 71 lactating cows, 2.3 ± 1.5 robot units/farm, 43.6 ± 9.4 cows/robot, 36.4 ± 4.9 kg/d of milk, a milking frequency of 3.01 ± 0.33 milkings/d, and a herd average geometric mean SCC of 179.3 ± 74.6 (× 1,000) cells/mL. Thirty percent of cows/farm (minimum of 30 cows/farm) were scored for body condition (1 = underconditioned to 5 = over conditioned) and locomotion (1 = sound to 5 = lame; clinically lame ≥3 out of 5 = 28.3 ± 11.7%, and severely lame ≥4 out of 5 = 3.0 ± 3.2%). Clinical lameness (locomotion score ≥3) was less prevalent on farms with sand bedding, with increased feed bunk space per cow, and on farms with non-Holstein breeds versus Holsteins, and tended to be less prevalent with lesser proportion of underconditioned cows (with body condition score ≤2.5). Severe lameness occurrence (farms with any cows with locomotion score ≥4) was associated with a greater proportion of underconditioned cows and in farms with stalls with greater curb heights. Herd average milk yield/cow per day increased with lesser prevalence of clinical lameness (each 10-percentage-point decrease in clinical lameness prevalence was associated with 2.0 kg/cow per day greater milk yield) and greater milking visit frequency per day, and tended to be greater with increased feed push-up frequency. Lesser herd average somatic cell count was associated with lesser clinical lameness prevalence, herd average days in milk, and proportion of overconditioned cows, and somatic cell count tended to be lesser for farms with sand bedding versus those with organic bedding substrates. The results highlight the importance of minimizing lameness prevalence, using of sand bedding, ensuring adequate feed access and feed bunk space, and maintaining proper cow body condition to optimize herd-level productivity and milk quality in AMS herds.

Benchmarking of farms with automated milking systems in Canada and associations with milk production and quality

The objective of this study was to benchmark the herd-level housing and management strategies of automated milking system (AMS) farms across Canada and assess the associations of these herd-level housing factors and management practices with milk production and quality. Canadian AMS farms (n = 197; Western Canada: n = 50, Ontario: n = 77, Quebec: n = 59, Atlantic Canada: n = 11) were each visited once from April to September 2019, and details were collected related to barn design and herd management practices. Milk-recording data for the 6 mo before farm visits were collected. Farms averaged (± standard deviation) 110 ± 102 lactating cows, 2.4 ± 1.9 AMS units/farm, 47.5 ± 14.9 cows/AMS, 36.7 ± 5.0 kg/d of milk, 4.13 ± 0.34% fat, 3.40 ± 0.16% protein, and a herd-average somatic cell count of 186,400 ± 80,800 cells/mL. Farms mainly used freestall housing systems (92.5%), organic bedding substrates (73.6%), and free flow cow traffic systems (87.8%); farms predominantly milked Holsteins (90.4%). Multivariable regression models were used to associate herd-level housing factors and management practices with milk production and quality. At the herd level, feed push-up frequency (mean = 12.8 ± 8.3 times per day) and feed bunk space (mean = 64 ± 21.5 cm/cow) were positively associated with milk yield. Greater milk yield was associated with herds using inorganic (sand) versus organic bedding, milking Holsteins versus non-Holsteins, and using a form of mechanical ventilation versus natural ventilation alone. Milk fat and milk protein content were only associated with breed. Herds with lower somatic cell counts had more frequent alley cleaning (mean = 12.1 ± 7.5 times per day), wider lying alleys (mean = 304.5 ± 40.0 cm), and sand bedding. The results highlight the importance of using sand bedding, using mechanical ventilation, keeping feed pushed up, ensuring alleys are clean, and ensuring adequate space at the feed bunk for maintaining herd-level productivity and milk quality in farms with AMS.

Assessing the utility of leukocyte differential cell counts for predicting morbidity, mortality, and growth in a grain-fed veal facility: A prospective single cohort study

Selective antimicrobial treatment strategies present a means to reduce antimicrobial use at the time of arrival at a veal or dairy beef operation. On-farm machine leukocyte differential cell counts (DCC) that can be acquired quickly may be useful to augment calf risk identification protocols. The objective of this study was to assess the utility of DCC taken at the time of arrival at a grain-fed veal facility and 72 h postarrival for determining morbidity risk, mortality risk, and growth during the production cycle. Data were collected between June and October 2018 from 240 calves upon arrival and from a subset of 160 calves 72 h postarrival at a commercial grain-fed veal facility in Ontario, Canada. Blood samples were evaluated using the QScout BLD test for leukocyte DCC (Advanced Animal Diagnostic, Morrisville, NC). All calves were screened using a standardized health examination, and a blood sample was collected to evaluate serum total protein and DCC. Cox proportional hazards models were constructed for both morbidity and mortality outcomes. Mixed linear regression models were constructed to evaluate average daily gain. Results from data collected at the time of arrival suggest that total protein values ≥5.2 g/dL reduced the hazard of mortality and that a rectal temperature >39.6°C was associated with an increased hazard of morbidity. Calves that were dehydrated gained less, whereas calves with an increased lymphocyte count had a higher rate of growth. Results from DCC collected 72 h postarrival suggest that lymphocyte counts between 4.8 and 5.8 × 10⁹ cells/L decreased the hazard of mortality and counts >7.0 × 10⁹ cells/L decreased the hazard of morbidity, whereas neutrophil counts >6.0 × 10⁹ cells/L increased the hazard of mortality. This study demonstrates that machine DCC at the time of arrival and 72 h after arrival has potential for use in identifying high-risk calves that might require treatment, as part of selective antimicrobial therapy protocols, with the purpose of reducing antimicrobial use without sacrificing animal health in veal facilities.

Effects of molasses-based liquid feed supplementation to a high-straw dry cow diet on feed intake, health, and performance of dairy cows across the transition period

The objective of this study was to determine the effects of adding molasses-based liquid feed to a high-straw dry cow diet on intake, behavior, health, and performance of dairy cows across the transition period. Holstein cows (n = 40) entering their second lactation or greater were enrolled at dry-off (∼45 d before expected calving) and assigned to 1 of 2 treatments: a high-straw dry cow total mixed ration (TMR) with either (1) no molasses [CON; n = 20; 10.7% crude protein (CP), 1.45 Mcal/kg of net energy for lactation (NE_L)] or (2) supplemented with 1 kg/cow daily [dry matter (DM) basis] of molasses-based liquid feed (LF; n = 20; 11.2% CP, 1.49 Mcal/kg of NE_L). At calving all cows were fed the same lactating TMR (14.9% CP, 1.68 Mcal/kg of NE_L) and followed for 28 d. During the dry period, cows fed the LF diet had greater DM intake (15.3 ± 0.24 vs. 13.4 ± 0.24 kg/d) and tended to have a shorter interval between meals (192.8 ± 8.38 vs. 216.5 ± 7.97 min) and more frequent meals (6.3 ± 0.27 vs. 5.6 ± 0.27 meals/d), while consuming their feed faster (0.09 ± 0.001 vs. 0.08 ± 0.001 kg of DM/min) compared with cows fed the CON diet. Regardless of treatment, cows sorted [100% × (actual intake/predicted intake)] against the longest ration particles (>19 mm), with cows fed the CON diet sorting more against these (81.1 ± 2.6 vs. 93.9 ± 2.6%). Cows fed the CON diet did not sort for or against short particles (<8, >4 mm; 100.2 ± 0.31%), but cows fed the LF diet tended to sort against these (99.2 ± 0.31%). Post-calving, cows fed the LF diet did not sort for long particles (98.5 ± 1.1%), but cows fed the CON diet continued to sort against these (96.3 ± 1.1%). Cows fed the LF diet had higher mean reticulorumen pH in the dry period (6.4 ± 0.05 vs. 6.2 ± 0.06 pH), in the first week after calving (CON = 5.7 ± 0.06 pH, LF = 5.8 ± 0.06 pH), and tended to have higher mean reticulorumen pH in the second week after calving (CON = 5.7 ± 0.06 pH, LF = 5.9 ± 0.06 pH). The results suggest that supplementing a molasses-based liquid feed in high-straw dry cow diets may improve intake and consistency in nutrients consumed during the dry period and in early lactation, as well as possibly promoting better rumen health across the transition period.

Moisture content of high-straw dry cow diets affects intake, health, and performance of transition dairy cows

The objective of this study was to determine the effect of adding water to a high-straw dry cow diet on feeding behavior, health, and performance of dairy cows. Holstein cows (n = 40) entering their second or greater lactation were enrolled at dry off (∼45 d before expected calving) and assigned to 1 of 2 dietary treatments, consisting of a high-straw dry cow total mixed ration [TMR; 36% wheat straw, 41% corn silage, 23% pellet, on a dry matter (DM) basis, formulated for 11.6% crude protein, 1.35 Mcal/kg net energy for lactation] with (1) no water (CON; n = 20; DM = 53.4%) or (2) water added to decrease the DM by ∼10 percentage points (wet diet, WD; n = 20; DM = 45.4%). Upon calving, all cows were fed the same lactating TMR (45.2% DM, 14.9% crude protein, 1.68 Mcal/kg net energy for lactation) and followed for 28 d. Dry matter intake, feeding behavior, and rumination activity were recorded automatically. Fresh TMR and orts samples were collected 2×/wk to determine differences in sorting. A particle separator was used to separate feed samples into 4 fractions: long (>19 mm), medium (<19, >8 mm), short (<8, >4 mm), and fine (<4 mm) particles. Feed sorting was calculated as actual intake of each particle fraction expressed as a % of predicted intake. Cows fed WD had greater DM intake during the dry period than cows fed CON (CON = 13.4 ± 0.24, WD = 14.2 ± 0.24 kg/d), but rumination did not differ (CON = 522.2 ± 8.48, WD = 518.5 ± 8.69 min/d) between treatments. Cows fed WD tended to consume their feed faster (CON = 0.08 ± 0.001, WD = 0.09 ± 0.001 kg of DM/min) compared with CON cows. Regardless of treatment, cows sorted against the longest ration particles, with cows fed CON sorting more against these (CON = 81.1 ± 2.51%, WD = 94.9 ± 2.58%). Cows fed CON tended to sort more in favor of the medium particles than those fed WD (CON = 105.0 ± 0.36%, WD = 104.2 ± 0.37%). Postcalving DM intake and feeding behavior were not affected by dry diet treatment. Cows fed WD experienced a less rapid daily decline in rumen pH during the first 7 d after calving compared with those fed the CON diet. The results suggest that increasing the moisture content of high-straw dry cow diets, by adding water, may improve intake and reduce sorting against the longest ration particles, which may help promote consistency in targeted nutrients consumed during the dry period and greater rumen health in early lactation.

Short communication: Risk factors identified at arrival associated with average daily gain at a grain-fed veal facility: A prospective single cohort study

The primary objective of this prospective cohort study was to identify factors evaluated upon arrival at a grain-fed veal facility that were associated with increased growth. A secondary objective was to determine if the factors associated with average daily gain (ADG) varied between the pre- and postweaning periods. Calves were visually assessed and scored using a standardized health scoring system immediately upon arrival. They were also weighed and vaccinated, and had blood drawn from their jugular vein to determine their serum total protein level. Weights were taken on d 49 and 78 after arrival and were used to calculate ADG. Three mixed linear regression models were created to determine factors associated with ADG from 0 to 49 d after arrival, 0 to 78 d after arrival, and 49 to 78 d after arrival. A total of 998 calves were evaluated and weighed upon arrival; 636 and 915 of those calves were weighed at d 49 and d 78, respectively. Mean ADG were 610 g/d from 0 to 49 d after arrival, 860 g/d from 0 to 78 d after arrival, and 1,240 g/d from 49 to 78 d after arrival. In the model evaluating growth from 0 to 49 d, calves arriving at the facility with a higher body mass index (BMI) gained more weight per day than calves that arrived with a lower BMI. If calves arrived in the spring, they gained 201 g/d more than calves that arrived in the winter. For the period following weaning (d 49 to 78), BMI was also associated with growth. For every additional 1 g/cm² increase in BMI at arrival, calves gained an additional 1.55 g/d from d 49 to 78. Growth from arrival to d 78 was affected solely by BMI. For every 1 g/cm² increase in BMI at arrival, calves gained 1.23 g/d more during the entire observation period. Body mass index and season at arrival affected growth through the initial period at a grain-fed veal facility. Producers should consider these factors, especially BMI, when purchasing calves to maximize the calves' growth potential.

A preliminary study investigating effects of oral monensin sodium in an enteric Mycobacterium avium ssp. paratuberculosis infection model of calves

Mycobacterium avium ssp. paratuberculosis (MAP) is the causative agent of Johne's disease, an enteric infection of ruminants that causes significant economic burden for dairy and beef producers. Efforts to control MAP in endemic herds typically focus on herd management practices such as limiting exposure or early culling of infected animals and, occasionally, vaccination. The ionophore monensin sodium may have protective effects against MAP both in vivo and in vitro; however, this has not been thoroughly evaluated experimentally. Using a direct intestinal MAP challenge model, we have observed similarities regarding persistence of MAP in tissues and apparent resilience to infection compared with experimental oral infection or natural disease. Here we sought to investigate the effects of oral monensin supplementation in experimentally MAP-infected calves. We examined the persistence of MAP in the intestinal tissues, MAP-induced intestinal inflammation, fecal MAP shedding, and seroconversion using a commercial serologic assay. Monensin-supplemented MAP-infected calves demonstrated evidence for resilience to MAP infection earlier in this study compared with monensin-free MAP-infected calves. However, statistical modeling did not identify a significant effect of monensin on outcomes of infection, and more work is required to understand how monensin affects early tissue colonization of MAP in calves.

Risk factors identified on arrival associated with morbidity and mortality at a grain-fed veal facility: A prospective, single-cohort study

High levels of morbidity, mortality, and antimicrobial use are common in the veal industry. For the sustainability of the industry, it is important to address these challenges and determine factors that can be used to improve animal health and welfare. The objectives of this prospective observational cohort study were to describe the health status of calves on arrival at a grain-fed veal facility and determine characteristics that were associated with morbidity and mortality. On arrival, the calves were assessed for health abnormalities, weighed, measured for hip height and length from withers to lumbosacral junction, and had blood collected to determine serum total protein level. Body mass index (BMI) was calculated using weight on arrival divided by the sum of the calf's length from withers to lumbosacral junction and hip height. The calves were observed for 77 d after arrival, during which the producer was responsible for recording all antibiotic treatments and mortality. We built Cox proportional hazard models for morbidity and mortality variables. We created 2 morbidity models: 1 for calves that were treated <21 d after arrival at the facility, and 1 for calves that were treated during the 11 wk at the facility. From January to December 2017, 998 calves were evaluated on arrival at the veal rearing facility. A large proportion (68%) were treated with antibiotics in the first 21 d after arrival. The only explanatory variable in the final <21 d morbidity model was BMI: calves with a higher BMI had a lower hazard of being treated for disease in the first 21 d after arrival. A total of 872 calves (87%) were treated at least once over the 11-wk housing period. A calf arriving with a BMI >371.46 g/cm or a serum total protein between 5.8 and 6.2 g/dL had a lower level of morbidity during the observation period. Over the 11-wk housing period, 74 calves (7.5%) died. Calves that arrived at the facility with a fecal score of 2 or a rectal temperature between 38.9 and 39.1°C had a higher hazard of dying; calves that had a BMI of >371 g/cm were less likely to die than calves that had a BMI <330 g/cm. These results point to the importance of assessing calves on arrival at a veal facility as a measure of identifying those at high risk for morbidity and mortality.

Short communication: Assessing the accuracy of inline milk fat-to-protein ratio data as an indicator of hyperketonemia in dairy cows in herds with automated milking systems

The objective of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of inline milk fat-to-protein (F:P) data to detect hyperketonemia (HYK) in herds with automated milking systems (AMS). The F:P ratio has been investigated as a tool for detecting HYK with moderate accuracy in past studies, but inline F:P data in AMS may also be useful for HYK screening. To assess the accuracy of these data in commercial settings, we monitored 484 cows from 9 AMS herds for their first 3 wk of lactation, taking blood samples once per week (n = 1,427). Positive cases of HYK were defined by whole-blood β-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) concentrations ≥1.2 or ≥1.4 mmol/L. Milk data were collected from the AMS software on each farm for each cow and converted into 4 different F:P values: (1) value from the same day as the BHB test; (2) 5-d centered-moving average (CMA); (3) 5-d backward-moving average (BMA); (4) 5-d forward-moving average (FMA). In linear regression models, all 4 values were associated with BHB, but slope estimates varied and R² were low: same day (slope = 0.95, R² = 0.07), CMA (slope = 1.05, R² = 0.07), BMA (slope = 0.65, R² = 0.04), and FMA (slope = 1.23, R² = 0.09). In logistic regression models, the odds of having HYK (BHB ≥1.2 mmol/L) increased with every 0.1-unit increase from the mean F:P ratio (1.16) using same-day values (odds ratio = 1.35, 95% confidence interval = 1.25-1.47) and CMA (odds ratio = 1.39, 95% confidence interval = 1.27-1.51). The same increase in F:P from mean BMA (1.14) and FMA (1.17) was associated with 1.22 and 1.49 times the odds of HYK, respectively. For all 4 F:P variations, we evaluated the sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, and negative predictive value of different F:P thresholds with HYK status. As the F:P threshold increased from 1.17 to 1.50, sensitivity decreased (range: 77 to 9%) but specificity increased (range: 58 to 96%). Same-day and CMA F:P cutoffs at which a balance was reached between sensitivity and specificity ranged from 1.18 to 1.22; however, even at these values we found high rates of false positives and negatives (range: 31-39%). These results suggest that inline milk F:P data from inconsistently calibrated sensors should not be used alone to detect HYK in AMS herds.

Effect of health status upon arrival at a single milk-fed veal facility on breakeven purchase price of calves

Male calves are purchased from the dairy industry in North America to produce red meat. The price paid for male calves varies widely, and it is unclear which variables influence the price paid for each calf. The objective of this study was to assess how the health traits of calves at the time of arrival and demographic variables affect the breakeven purchase price of a male calf entering the veal industry. A financial model was constructed using the prevalence of health abnormalities, weight at arrival, source of the calf, number of days in the barn, base carcass price, days to mortality, feed costs, season at arrival, interest rate, housing location, carcass dressing percentage, and costs associated with housing, labor, utilities, trucking, and health to calculate the breakeven purchase price and an estimate of profit. Sensitivity analysis was conducted using health variables measured at arrival and demographic variables, including season at arrival and housing location, to identify the factors with the largest impact on the predicted average daily gain, early and late mortality risk, breakeven purchase price, and profit. At the baseline inputs, the average calculated profit was -$5.36 per calf and it was most sensitive to the location of housing where calves were fed and the body weight of the arriving calf. The mortality risk in the first 21 d after arrival (early) was calculated to be 2.2%, whereas the risk of mortality after 21 d (late) was 3.7%. The risks of early and late mortality were most sensitive to the level of dehydration measured at arrival and the season at arrival for the purchased calves, respectively. The calculated average daily gain was 1.12 kg/d and it was most sensitive to housing location. The breakeven purchase price was calculated to be $242.49 per calf, which was most sensitive to the housing location where the calves were fed. The results of this analysis demonstrate that veal producers need to consider many variables before purchasing calves. In addition to overall market conditions, veal producers should factor health characteristics and the expected performance of the calves they purchase into what they are willing to pay for them.

Validation of an automated cell counter to determine leukocyte differential counts in neonatal Holstein calves

Recent advances in the understanding of risk factors and biomarkers in calves entering rearing facilities show promise for identifying high-risk calves on arrival at veal and dairy beef operations. Rapid automated leukocyte differential cell counts may be a good addition for augmenting or refining calf risk identification on-farm. The objective of this study was to validate an automated leukocyte cell counter, the QScout BLD test (Advanced Animal Diagnostics, Morrisville, NC), for its ability to determine leukocyte differential cell counts in neonatal Holstein calves. From June to July 2018, blood samples collected in EDTA anticoagulant from 235 calves upon arrival at an independent veal research facility in Ontario, Canada, were evaluated using the QScout BLD test and manually by microscopy. We compared these leukocyte differential counts using Lin's concordance correlation coefficient (ρ) and found very good agreement between tests for neutrophil counts (ρ = 0.83); fair agreement for lymphocyte counts (ρ = 0.32); fair agreement for the ratio of neutrophils to lymphocytes (ρ = 0.36); slight agreement for monocyte counts (ρ = 0.14); and slight agreement for eosinophil counts (ρ = 0.20). We further examined test results to determine if they differed in their classification of samples as being above, within, or below reported 95% reference intervals for neonatal Holstein calves. Classification between tests resulted in very good agreement for neutrophils and lymphocytes, with only 4.2% and 5.8% disagreement in classification, respectively. We observed moderate agreement for monocytes, with 23.3% classified differently, and poor agreement for eosinophils, with 70.3% classified differently. Further study is required to determine the role of leukocyte profiling in the risk assessment of calves arriving at calf-rearing facilities.

Evaluation of a multispecies probiotic as a supportive treatment for diarrhea in dairy calves: A randomized clinical trial

The objectives of this randomized clinical trial were to determine whether the utilization of a multispecies probiotic bolus (MSP) in dairy calves with diarrhea led to a rapid resolution of diarrhea and improved average daily gain (ADG). Calves, from a convenience sample of dairy farms with diarrhea challenges, having fecal scores of ≥2 were randomly assigned to receive MSP or a placebo (PLB). The MSP bolus contained Pediococcus acidilactici, Enterococcus faecium, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus casei, Bifidobacterium bifidum, peptide extract, an enzyme blend, killed yeast extract, dried whey, and natural flavors (Revive, Partnar Animal Health, Ilderton, ON, Canada). The enrolled calves were fecal scored daily for 7 consecutive days and resolution of diarrhea was defined as having 2 consecutive days with a fecal score ≤1. Calves were also weighed at enrollment, 7, and 14 d following enrollment and ADG was calculated. A Cox proportional hazards model was built to investigate time to resolution of an abnormal fecal score. Two mixed linear regression models were created to evaluate the effect of treatment group on ADG in the first and second weeks following enrollment. A total of 148 calves were enrolled in the experiment and no differences were observed between the groups with respect to the age or weight at enrollment. The mean time to resolution of abnormal fecal score was 5.1 and 5.9 d in the MSP and PLB groups, respectively. In the Cox proportional hazards model, the calves in the MSP group had faster resolution of diarrhea when compared with the PLB group; however, an interaction between time from enrollment of the first calf and treatment group was present. No differences were found between the 2 groups with respect to ADG. This study demonstrates a multispecies probiotic and yeast bolus administered to calves at the onset of diarrhea reduced the duration of diarrhea; however, the clinical and economic relevance of this reduction requires further exploration.

Short communication: Validation of a test-day milk test for β-hydroxybutyrate for identifying cows with hyperketonemia

Subclinical ketosis is a common metabolic disorder affecting dairy cattle that results in a greater risk for the development of subsequent metabolic and infectious disease. Canwest Dairy Herd Improvement (DHI; Guelph, ON, Canada) has begun to use an infrared test (MilkoScan FT600, Foss Analytical A/S, Hillerød, Denmark) applied to metered composite milk samples to detect β-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) levels as a herd surveillance test for hyperketonemia. However, the test has not been compared with the gold standard, serum BHB as determined in a reference diagnostic laboratory. The objective of this cross-sectional diagnostic accuracy study was to validate the DHI milk BHB test to identify cows with hyperketonemia as determined by quantification of BHB in serum. A total of 316 cows from 17 dairy herds in southwestern Ontario had a milk and blood sample taken. Milk was collected at a routine DHI test, and blood from the same cow was sampled within 24 h of the milk test. The BHB concentration in milk was determined using the DHI milk BHB test, and serum was sent to the Animal Health Laboratory at the University of Guelph (Guelph, ON, Canada). A nonparametric receiver operating characteristic curve was generated to compare DHI milk BHB concentrations with serum BHB concentrations. Overall, a total of 34 cows (11%) had a level of serum BHB ≥1.2 mmol/L. The concentration of DHI milk BHB was moderately correlated with the concentration of serum BHB, yielding a coefficient of determination value of 0.61. The optimal cut point for determining hyperketonemia (≥1.2 mmol/L) on the DHI milk BHB test was ≥0.14 mmol/L, yielding a sensitivity of 81% and specificity of 92%. The performance of the DHI milk BHB test varied depending on the days in milk (DIM) of the cows tested, with a higher specificity being found in cows that were ≤25 DIM compared with cows tested >25 DIM. If the herd-level prevalence of hyperketonemia was ≥14%, the DHI milk BHB test had an improved sensitivity when compared with a herd-level prevalence of <14%. This study demonstrates that the DHI milk BHB test is a reliable measure for evaluating hyperketonemia using routine DHI milk samples and could be used as a herd-level monitoring tool for ketosis when evaluating nutritional management or preventative medicine strategies.

Effect of health status evaluated at arrival on growth in milk-fed veal calves: A prospective single cohort study

The objective of this prospective single cohort study was to determine the effect of health status at arrival on growth in milk-fed veal calves. Upon arrival at the veal facility, calves were evaluated using a standardized health scoring system and weighed, and the supplier of the calf was recorded. The calves were followed until slaughter, when the hot carcass weight (HCW) was reported. To calculate average daily gain (ADG), the HCW was transformed into an estimated live weight, weight at arrival was subtracted, and this value was divided by the number of days on feed. A mixed linear regression model was created to evaluate the association of health status on arrival with the ADG throughout the production period. A total of 4,825 calves were evaluated at arrival; however, due to inconsistent HCW data from one slaughter plant, and 357 calves dying during the production period, 2,283 calves were used for analysis. In the final model, 7 variables were significantly associated with ADG. Housing location within the farm, method of calf procurement (drover or auction-derived calves versus direct delivery from local farms) and having a higher body weight at arrival were associated with a higher ADG. The season of arrival (summer or fall compared with winter) and being dehydrated at arrival were associated with a lower ADG. Days on feed was also significant in the multivariable model and had a quadratic relationship with ADG. The associations identified suggest that there may be value in scoring dehydration and body weight at arrival to a veal facility.

Short communication: Validation of methods for practically evaluating failed passive transfer of immunity in calves arriving at a veal facility

Providing a sufficient quantity of high-quality colostrum to male and female calves soon after birth is critical to reduce the risk of disease and mortality. Practical tests have not been validated to determine failed passive transfer of immunity upon arrival at veal facilities. There are many challenges to validation, including the lack of information on the age of the calf and the high prevalence of dehydration. The objective of this study was to validate a semiquantitative IgG antibody test using whole blood and a digital refractometer using serum to determine passive transfer of immunity status. A total of 149 Holstein calves were evaluated upon arrival at a milk-fed veal facility for dehydration status and had blood drawn to evaluate passive transfer of immunity. Serum IgG determined by radial immunodiffusion was used as the gold standard for the validation of the tests, and a cut-off point of <1,000 mg/dL of IgG was used to indicate failed passive transfer of immunity. Serum total protein (STP) was evaluated using a digital refractometer (Misco Palm Abbe no. PA202x, Misco, Solon, OH), and a semiquantitative test (ZAPvet Bovine IgG test, NOWDiagnostics, Toronto, Ontario, Canada) was used on whole blood. A nonparametric receiver operating characteristic curve was generated to compare STP and IgG levels. Sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive values, and negative predictive values were calculated for STP and the semiquantitative IgG test. A total of 31 calves (21%) had serum IgG <1,000 mg/dL. Twelve percent of calves were showing signs of clinical dehydration when assessed upon arrival. The serum total protein (STP) was very well correlated with the concentration of IgG (R² = 0.75). The STP cut point to determine passive transfer was ≥5.1 g/dL, yielding a sensitivity of 84% and a specificity of 90%. The semiquantitative antibody test on whole blood performed poorly, with a sensitivity of 77% and a specificity of 44%. This study demonstrates that serum total protein is a reliable measure for evaluating passive transfer of immunity and can be used despite a high prevalence of dehydration.

Field trial to evaluate the effect of an intranasal respiratory vaccine protocol on calf health, ultrasonographic lung consolidation, and growth in Holstein dairy calves

The objective of this field trial was to evaluate the effect of a vaccine protocol using a commercially available trivalent vaccine designed for intranasal use. Experimental challenge studies have demonstrated varying efficacies of vaccines administered via the intranasal route. A total of 468 calves from 3 herds were enrolled and randomized into 3 treatment groups (positive control, PC, n = 211; intranasal vaccine, IN, n = 215; negative control, NC, n = 42) and followed for 8 to 12 wk. The PC consisted of one dose of commercially available multivalent injectable vaccine against bovine respiratory syncytial virus, infectious bovine rhinotracheitis, parainfluenza 3, and bovine viral diarrhea administered subcutaneously at 6 wk of age. The IN was administered at enrollment and 6 wk of age, and contained antigen against bovine respiratory syncytial virus, infectious bovine rhinotracheitis, and parainfluenza 3. The NC was sterile saline administered intranasally and subcutaneously at enrollment and 6 wk of age. Clinical illness was assessed using systematic respiratory scoring, and thoracic ultrasonography was used to identify the lung consolidation associated with pneumonia. Rib fractures were identified in 6% of calves, and an association was observed between rib fractures and calving ease. Overall, 54% of the calves had at least one episode of an abnormal respiratory score (ILL). Vaccination protocol did not affect the occurrence of ILL. Similarly, 54% of the calves had at least one episode of lung consolidation ≥3 cm (CON). Vaccine protocol affected the odds of CON. The odds of CON in PC were 1.63 (95% confidence interval: 1.04-2.56) times the odds of CON in IN, and 0.38 (95% confidence interval: 0.16-0.93) times the odds of CON in NC. The odds of CON in IN were 0.23 (95% confidence interval: 0.09-0.59) times the odds of CON in NC. The outcomes ILL and CON were associated; however, the measure of agreement was only fair (kappa = 0.38). Multivariable linear regression revealed an interaction between vaccine protocol and herd on average daily gain (ADG); therefore, these data were stratified. In herd 1, IN (0.53 ± 0.03 kg/d) decreased ADG compared with PC (0.63 ± 0.03 kg/d). In herd 2, IN increased ADG (0.41 ± 0.03 kg/d) compared with PC (0.38 ± 0.03 kg/d). In contrast, none of the protocols affected ADG at herd 3. In conclusion, this commercially available trivalent IN vaccine protocol did not alter the incidence of ILL, reduced the risk of lung lesions associated with pneumonia, and improved the ADG of the calves in one of the commercial study herds.

Clinical and metabolic indicators associated with early mortality at a milk-fed veal facility: A prospective case-control study

Antimicrobial use and resistance, in combination with high levels of mortality, are important challenges facing the veal industry. To improve both the economic sustainability of the industry and animal welfare, measures need to be taken to explore and address reasons for these challenges. Health status at arrival may be an important predictor of calf mortality because substantial mortality occurs early in the growing period on veal operations. The objective of this observational case-control study was to identify clinically measurable variables and metabolic indicators associated with mortality in the first 21 d following arrival at a veal facility. Calves were evaluated using a standardized health scoring system, blood was collected, calves were weighed, and the supplier of the calf was recorded at arrival. The calves were followed until death or 21 d after arrival. Cases were defined as calves that died ≤21 d following arrival. Two controls for every case were randomly selected from calves that survived >21 d, arrived on the same day, and were housed in the same barn as cases. Stored serum harvested at arrival from cases and controls was submitted for measurement of concentrations of nonesterified fatty acids, β-hydroxybutyrate, glucose, cholesterol, urea, haptoglobin, and immunoglobulin G. A conditional logistic regression model was built to evaluate factors associated with mortality ≤21 d following arrival. A total of 4,825 calves were evaluated from November 2015 to September 2016. The mortality risk in the first 21 d was 2.8%, giving 135 cases, which were compared with 270 controls. Six variables were significant in the final multivariable model. Calves with a slightly enlarged navel with slight pain or moisture, and those with severe dehydration had increased odds of mortality ≤21 d following arrival. Drover-derived calves, calves that weighed more, and calves that had higher concentration of immunoglobulin G or cholesterol at arrival were less likely to die. The results demonstrate that calves at elevated risk for early mortality can be identified at arrival using both health and hematological factors. Early recognition of high-risk calves may allow for an intervention that could result in improvement in survival rates; however, prevention of these abnormalities before arrival at veal facilities needs to be further explored.

Risk factors associated with mortality at a milk-fed veal calf facility: A prospective cohort study

The veal industry experiences calf losses during the growing period, which represents a challenge to animal welfare and profitability. Health status at arrival may be an important predictor of calf mortality. The objectives of this prospective cohort study were to describe the health status of calves arriving at a veal farm and determine the risk factors associated with early and late mortality. Using a standardized health scoring system, calves were evaluated immediately at arrival to a commercial milk-fed veal facility in Ontario, Canada. Weight at arrival and supplier of the calf were recorded. The calves were followed until death or the end of their production cycle. Two Cox proportional hazard models were built to explore factors associated with early (≤21 d following arrival) and late mortality (>21 d following arrival). A total of 4,825 calves were evaluated from November 2015 to September 2016. The overall mortality risk was 7%, with 42% of the deaths occurring in the first 21 d after arrival. An abnormal navel, dehydration, housing location within the farm, arriving in the summer, and the presence of a sunken flank were associated with increased hazard of early mortality. Drover-derived calves and calves with a greater body weight at arrival had lower hazard of early mortality. Housing location within the farm, being derived from auction facilities, and an abnormal navel were associated with higher hazard of late mortality. These results demonstrate that risk factors for mortality can be identified at arrival, which represents a potential opportunity to selectively intervene on these calves to reduce mortality. However, methods of preventing the development of these conditions before arrival need to be explored and encouraged to improve the welfare of the calves entering the veal industry.

Calf management risk factors on dairy farms associated with male calf mortality on veal farms

The objective of this cross-sectional herd-level study was to assess the association of calf management practices on source dairy farms with mortality risk on veal farms. From April to October 2016, 52 source dairy farms supplying male calves to 2 veal operations were visited once. A questionnaire was administered that covered all areas of calf management, calves between 1 and 10 d of age were examined using a standardized health scoring system, and blood was taken to evaluate passive transfer of immunoglobulins. The mortality risk for calves from each dairy farm was calculated based on the number of male calves sold from the dairy farm and that died during 2016 at the veal operations. The mean mortality risk was calculated for both veal farms and, based on the veal facility-adjusted mortality risk, dairy farms were classified as high- or low-mortality source farms. Using the information gathered at the 52 source dairy farms, a logistic regression model was used to assess factors associated with being a high-mortality source farm. Suppliers to veal farm 1 had a mean mortality risk of 9.6% and suppliers to veal farm 2 had a mean mortality risk of 4.2%. The lower mortality risk at veal farm 2 was partially influenced by a shorter period of observation. Of the 182 calves examined during the single visit to the source dairy farms, 41% of male calves and 29% of female calves had at least one identifiable health abnormality. The risk of failure of passive transfer on source dairy farms was low, with only 13% of calves tested having <10 mg of IgG/mL of serum. The subset of calves examined at the source dairy farm was not followed prospectively to the veal farms. Using a tube feeder or pail to feed colostrum, bedding male calves on wood shavings or chopped straw at the source dairy farm, and the herd veterinarian not routinely and actively inquiring about the health and performance of calves during regular herd visits were significantly associated with the farm being classified as a high-mortality source dairy farm. Checking the calving pen at an interval of every 3 h or more during the day was associated with a lower probability of being classified as a high-mortality source dairy farm. The results of this study suggest that there are management practices on the source farm that contribute to the risk of mortality on veal farms.

Association of rumination time and health status with milk yield and composition in early-lactation dairy cows

The objective of this study was to determine the associations of rumination time (RT) and health status with milk yield and milk composition. This study used 339 dairy cows from 4 commercial dairy farms in Ontario, Canada (first lactation, n = 107; second lactation, n = 112; ≥third lactation, n = 120). Rumination time was monitored (24 h/d) using an automated system from 1 to 28 d in milk (DIM). Cows were milked 3×/d on each farm, and 2 farms recorded milk weights at each milking to determine daily milk yield (n = 170). Cows were also monitored for milk composition (fat and protein content) 1×/wk. Last, subclinical ketosis (SCK) was diagnosed 1×/wk; cows with at least one blood sample with β-hydroxybutyrate ≥1.2 mmol/L postcalving were diagnosed with SCK. Cases of retained placenta, metritis, milk fever, or mastitis during the study period were also recorded. Cows were categorized into 1 of 4 groups: healthy cows that had no SCK or any other health issue (HLT; n = 139); cows that were treated for at least one health issue other than SCK (HLT+; n = 50); SCK cows with no other health problems during transition (HYK; n = 97); or cows that had SCK and one or more other health problems (HYK+; n = 53). All data were summarized by week across cows, and the associations between rumination time and milk yield (n = 170) and milk composition (n = 339) were modeled. Across all lactations, and including all health categories, milk yield increased by week, whereas fat and protein content both decreased by week. A positive association was found between summarized RT and milk yield in first-lactation (+0.006 ± 0.003 kg/min of RT) and second-lactation (+0.015 ± 0.004 kg/min of RT) cows from 4 to 28 DIM, as well as in ≥third-lactation cows; however, the relationship between RT and milk yield differed across weeks in those cows. A negative association between RT and milk fat content was found in ≥third-lactation cows (-0.002 ± 0.00059 percentage points/min of RT). From 4 to 28 DIM, ≥third-lactation HYK and HYK+ cows produced less protein (0.11 ± 0.051 and 0.13 ± 0.056 percentage points, respectively) than HLT cows. Over the 4-wk observation period, first-lactation HYK+ cows tended to deposit 0.11 ± 0.056 percentage points less protein in their milk compared with HLT cows. Second-lactation HYK+ cows produced less milk than HLT cows each week during early lactation. In summary, RT was positively associated with milk yield in early-lactation dairy cows, across all lactations, and negatively associated with milk fat content in ≥third-lactation cows. Further, the results showed that early-lactation cows that experience SCK, particularly with one or more other health problems, might have decreased milk yield and milk protein content.

Management practices for male calves on Canadian dairy farms

Morbidity, mortality, and antimicrobial use and resistance are major concerns in the rearing of male dairy calves, so information to support disease prevention is important. The objective of this cross-sectional study was to describe management practices associated with the care of male calves during their first days of life on Canadian dairy farms. A survey was completed by dairy producers across Canada between March 1 and April 30, 2015. The survey included 192 questions covering producer background, farm characteristics, biosecurity practices, disease prevalence, calf health, animal welfare, lameness, milking hygiene, reproduction, and Internet and social media use. A total of 1,025 surveys were completed online, by telephone, or by mail, representing 9% of all dairy farms in Canada. Five percent of respondents (n = 49) answered that they had euthanized at least 1 male calf at birth in the previous year, and blunt force trauma was commonly used in these cases. The majority of respondents always fed colostrum to male calves; however, 9% (n = 80) did not always feed colostrum. Almost 40% (n = 418) of respondents reported always dipping the navels of male calves, 12% (n = 123) vaccinated male calves, and 17% (n = 180) did not provide the same quantity of feed to male calves as heifer calves. The care of male calves differed greatly depending on the geographical region of the respondents. However, some regional effects may be confounded by economic conditions and the logistics of marketing male dairy calves in different parts of the country. Herd size was another important variable in many aspects of the management of male calves on dairy farms. Larger herd sizes were more likely to use an appropriate method of euthanasia at birth but were less likely to always feed colostrum to their male calves or feed them the same as female calves. Familiarity with the Code of Practice for the Care and Handling of Dairy Cattle (National Farm Animal Care Council) by respondents was associated with better care of male calves on dairy farms. The results of this survey suggest that the treatment of male dairy calves on Canadian dairy farms varies and that there are opportunities to improve the health management of male calves on the farms of origin.

Effects of a combination butaphosphan and cyanocobalamin product and insulin on ketosis resolution and milk production

The objective of this study was to determine the effects of butaphosphan-cyanocobalamin (B+C), glargine insulin, and propylene glycol on resolution of ketosis and average daily milk yield after treatment. Cows from 16 herds in Ontario, Canada, and 1 herd in Michigan were tested at weekly intervals between 3 and 16 DIM. Ketosis was defined as blood β-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) ≥1.2 mmol/L. All ketotic cows were given a baseline treatment of 3 d of 300 g of propylene glycol orally. Animals were then randomly assigned to treatment with 3 doses of either 25 mL of B+C or 25 mL of saline placebo and 1 dose of either 2 mL (200 IU) of glargine insulin or 2 mL of saline placebo in a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement. Outcomes of interest on all farms were ketosis cure (blood BHB <1.2 mmol/L 1 wk postenrollment), maintenance of ketosis cure (blood BHB <1.2 mmol/L 1 and 2 wk postenrollment), and blood BHB concentrations at 1 and 2 wk postenrollment. Milk weights were collected daily in 1 large freestall herd. Repeated measures ANOVA was used to evaluate blood BHB concentrations 2 wk after treatment and milk production for 30 d after treatment. Poisson regression was used to examine the effect of treatment on cure and maintenance of cure. Due to a regulatory delay causing temporary unavailability of B+C in Canada, data were analyzed in 2 sets of models: one for insulin and the corresponding placebo (n = 620) and one for the full trial (n = 380). Animals with blood glucose concentrations ≤2.2 mmol/L at the time of ketosis diagnosis were 2.1 times more likely (95% CI = 1.2 to 3.7) to be cured if treated with B+C. Animals in lactation 3 or higher that had blood glucose concentrations <2.2 mmol/L at enrollment produced 4.2 kg/d (95% CI = 1.4 to 7.1) more milk if treated with insulin versus placebo and 2.8 kg/d (95% CI = 0.9 to 4.7) more milk if treated with B+C versus placebo. Animals in lactation 3 or higher with blood glucose ≥2.2 mmol/L that were treated with insulin produced 2.3 kg/d (95% CI = 0.3 to 4.4) less milk than untreated controls. No interaction was observed between treatments. This evidence suggests that B+C and insulin may be beneficial for ketosis treatment in animals with blood glucose <2.2 mmol/L at ketosis diagnosis. It also suggests that blood glucose concentration may be an important predictor of success of ketosis treatment.

Short communication: Association of lying behavior and subclinical ketosis in transition dairy cows

The objective of this study was to characterize the association of lying behavior and subclinical ketosis (SCK) in transition dairy cows. A total of 339 dairy cows (107 primiparous and 232 multiparous) on 4 commercial dairy farms were monitored for lying behavior and SCK from 14d before calving until 28 d after calving. Lying time, frequency of lying bouts, and average lying bout length were measured using automated data loggers 24h/d. Cows were tested for SCK 1×/wk by taking a blood sample and analyzing for β-hydroxybutyrate; cows with β-hydroxybutyrate ≥1.2mmol/L postpartum were considered to have SCK. Cases of retained placenta, metritis, milk fever, or mastitis during the study period were recorded and cows were categorized into 1 of 4 groups: healthy (HLT) cows had no SCK or any other health problem (n=139); cows treated for at least 1 health issue other than SCK (n=50); SCK (HYK) cows with no other health problems during transition (n=97); or subclinically ketotic plus (HYK+) cows that had SCK and 1 or more other health problems (n=53). Daily lying time was summarized by week and comparisons were made between HLT, HYK, and HYK+, respectively. We found no difference among health categories in lying time, bout frequency, or bout length fromwk -2 towk +4 relative to calving for first-lactation cows. Differences in lying time for multiparous cows were seen inwk +1, when HYK+ cows spent 92±24.0 min/d more time lying down than HLT cows, and duringwk +3 and +4 when HYK cows spent 44±16.7 and 41±18.9 min/d, respectively, more time lying down than HLT cows. Increased odds of HYK+ were found to be associated with higher parity, longer dry period, and greater stall stocking density inwk -1 and longer lying time duringwk +1. When comparing HYK to HLT cows, the same variables were associated with odds of SCK; however, lying time was not retained in the final model. These results suggest that monitoring lying time may contribute to identifying multiparous cows experiencing SCK with another health problem after calving, but may not be useful in the early detection of SCK.

Association of rumination time with subclinical ketosis in transition dairy cows

The objective of this study was to characterize the relationship between rumination and subclinical ketosis (SCK) in transition dairy cows. A study was conducted on 4 commercial dairy farms in eastern Ontario, Canada. A total of 339 Holstein dairy cows (107 primiparous and 232 multiparous) were monitored for rumination activity and SCK from 14 d before calving until 28 d after calving. Rumination was recorded daily using an automated monitoring system. A blood sample was taken from the coccygeal vein of each cow for measurement of β-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) once weekly throughout the 6-wk observation period. Cows with BHB ≥1.2mmol/L in any of the 4 postpartum samples were considered to have SCK. Cases of retained placenta, metritis, milk fever, or mastitis during the study period were also recorded. Cows were categorized into 1 of 4 groups: healthy cows (HLT) that had no SCK or any other recorded health problem (n=139); cows treated for at least one health issue other than SCK (HLT+; n=50); cows with SCK (hyperketonemia; HYK) with no other health problems during transition (n=97); or cows (HYK+) that had SCK and one or more other health problems (n=53). Daily rumination time was summarized by week and comparisons were made between HLT and HYK and HYK+. From 2 wk before calving (wk -2) to 4 wk after calving (wk +4), there was no difference in rumination time (409±9.8min/d) among HLT, HYK, and HYK+ cows in their first lactation. Multiparous cows in HLT spent an average of 459±11.3min/d ruminating from wk -2 to wk +4. Multiparous HYK cows ruminated 25±12.8min/d less than HLT cows, whereas HYK+ cows ruminated 44±15.6min/d less than HLT cows. The largest differences in rumination time between HLT and HYK+ cows were seen during wk -1, +1, and +2, when HYK+ cows ruminated 48±17.2, 73±16.0, and 65±19.4min/d less than HLT cows, respectively. In multiparous cows, increased odds of HYK were associated with greater milk yield in the previous lactation, greater loss of body condition over the transition period, greater stall stocking density in wk -1, and reduced rumination time in wk -1. Increased odds of HYK+ were associated with higher parity, longer dry period, greater stall stocking density in wk -1, and reduced rumination time in wk +1. These results suggest that rumination monitoring across the transition period might contribute to identification of SCK and other health problems in multiparous cows.

Effect of administration of recombinant bovine somatotropin on health and performance of lactating dairy cows diagnosed with hyperketonemia

The effect of administering recombinant bovine somatotropin (rbST) to cows with hyperketonemia during the early postpartum period on health, metabolic parameters, milk production, and early reproductive performance was evaluated in a double-blinded clinical trial. Cows from 8 dairy herds in New York State were tested weekly between 3 and 16d in milk for elevated serum β-hydroxybutyrate. Cows were enrolled in the study when blood β-hydroxybutyrate was ≥1.3mmol/L for the first time. Enrolled cows were randomly assigned to a treatment (n=273) or placebo control (n=270) group. Treated cows were given 325mg of rbST subcutaneously on the day of enrollment and again 14d later. Control cows received the same regimen except the syringe contained only the carrier without somatotropin. After enrollment, blood samples were collected weekly for 4wk and submitted to the laboratory to be analyzed for selected metabolites. Risk ratios for clinical diseases subsequent to treatment were calculated using Poisson regression. Continuous data were analyzed using linear mixed models. Time to first insemination was assessed with survival analysis. In the 42d following the first administration of rbST, incidence risks of displaced abomasum, clinical ketosis, metritis, clinical mastitis, and lameness were not different between treatment groups. Cows treated with rbST had a slightly lower body condition score 28d after enrollment compared with control cows. In the 4wk following enrollment, serum nonesterified fatty acids and aspartate amino-transferase were slightly higher for treated than control cows, respectively. Serum glucose, calcium, haptoglobin, and β-hydroxybutyrate were similar between groups. Treatment had no effect on resolution of hyperketonemia in any of the 4wk after enrollment. Milk production in either of the 2-wk periods after each treatment was not different between treated and control cows. Furthermore, milk production was not different between groups from enrollment to 98d in milk (42.6±0.6 and 42.1±0.7kg/d for treatment and control groups, respectively). Treatment had no effect on time to first insemination (83 and 74d in milk for treatment and control groups, respectively; hazard ratio=0.72) or first insemination pregnancy risk (27 and 29% for treatment and control groups, respectively; risk ratio=0.92). Based on the current results, it is not recommended to use a low dose of rbST as therapy for cows with hyperketonemia.

Short communication: limit feeding affects behavior patterns and feeding motivation of dairy heifers

The study objective was to assess the effects of limit feeding dairy heifers on behavior patterns and feeding motivation. Ten Holstein heifers (291.6±39.2d of age, weighing 324.2±61.2kg; mean ± SD) were exposed to each of 2 dietary treatments, in a random order, over 2 successive 26-d treatment periods (14-d adaptation period and a 12-d data collection period) using a crossover design: (1) a high-forage total mixed ration (TMR), provided ad libitum (CON) and (2) a low-forage TMR, limit-fed at 2.05% body weight (LF). Heifers were fed daily at 1100h and motivation to access a low-nutritive feedstuff (straw) was assessed using a push-door apparatus at 2 time points: 3h after feed delivery (1400h) and 21h after feed delivery (0800h). The amount of weight pushed, weight pushed as percentage of body weight, and latency to access the push door were recorded on 3 different days for each heifer at each time point on each treatment. When fed CON, heifers had greater dry matter intake (12.9 vs. 7.2kg/d), greater feeding time (209.3 vs. 82.4min/d), greater ruminating time (452.2 vs. 318.3min/d), and slower rates of intake (0.06 vs. 0.09kg of dry matter/min) than when fed LF. Heifers fed LF pushed more weight as a percentage of body weight at 3h (4.5 vs. 1.9%) and 21h (9.3 vs. 2.8%) after feed delivery. At both 3 and 21h after feed delivery, latency to access the door was shorter for the LF heifers compared with the CON heifers (65 vs. 145 s). These results indicate that, in addition to decreasing feeding time, limit feeding increases motivation of heifers to access a low-nutritive feedstuff, possibly due to lack of satiety resulting from lack of physical fill or insufficient time spent foraging.

Effect of frequency of feed delivery on the feeding behaviour, growth, and rumen temperature of limit-fed dairy heifers

The objective of this experiment was to determine the effect that frequency of provision of feed, provided in a restricted amount, had on feeding and lying behaviour, growth, and rumen temperature of growing dairy heifers. Twenty-four Holstein heifers (178.2±9.3 d of age; mean±SD), divided into six groups of four, were assigned to each of three treatments using a 3×3 Latin square design with 28-d periods (21-d adaptation, 7-d data collection). Treatments were delivery of daily allotment of total mixed ration (fed at 2.0% of body weight): (1) once per day (1×; 0800), (2) twice per day (2×; 0800 and 1600), and (3) four times per day (4×; 0800, 1200, 1600, and 2000). Average daily gain (ADG) was similar across treatments (0.8 kg d−1). There was a tendency for within-pen variation of ADG (average, per pen, of the absolute difference between individual heifer ADG and pen mean ADG) to be greater with 4× (0.3 kg d−1) and 2× (0.3 kg d−1) compared with 1× (0.2 kg d−1). Both feeding (63.1 vs. 44.2 vs. 51.5 min d−1) and unrewarded (presence at the feed bunk when no feed was present; 49.5 vs. 27.7 vs. 33.1 min d−1) time at the feed bunk decreased with increasing frequency of feed delivery (1×, 2×, and 4×, respectively). Frequency of displacements (3.1 displacements d−1) and number of displacements per unit of feeding time (0.06 displacements min−1) were similar between treatments. Lying time was similar between treatments (802.5 min d−1), while there was an increase in the amount of time spent standing without eating as frequency of feed delivery increased (558.9 vs. 590.0 vs. 604.7 min d−1 for 1×, 2×, and 4×, respectively). Thus, feeding 1× d−1 may prove beneficial for limit-fed heifers as it increases the time spent feeding, and decreases time spent standing without eating and within-pen variation in ADG.

Short communication: effects of frequency of feed delivery and bunk space on the feeding behavior of limit-fed dairy heifers

The objective of this experiment was to determine the interaction between feed bunk space and frequency of feed provision on the feeding behavior patterns and growth of growing dairy heifers fed a limited amount. Sixteen Holstein dairy heifers (183.4 ± 9.1 d of age, mean ± standard deviation) were divided into 4 groups of 4. The groups were exposed to each of 4 treatments, using a 4 × 4 Latin square design with a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement of treatments, over 21-d periods (14-d adaptation period, 7-d data collection periods). The treatments were arranged in 2 feed delivery frequencies (once per day at 1200 h: 1 ×/d, and twice per day at 1200 and 1400 h: 2 ×/d) and 2 levels of feed bunk space (adequate feed bunk space: 0.40 m/heifer, and reduced feed bunk space: 0.29 m/heifer). Pen dry matter intake (DMI) was recorded daily, average daily gain (ADG) was recorded weekly, and variability in ADG was calculated from the standard deviation of ADG. Feeding, unrewarded behavior (time at feed bunk without feed present), and competitive behavior were recorded using time-lapse video. Feeding and unrewarded behavior were measured for the last 7 d of each period, whereas competitive behavior was recorded on d 16, 18, and 20 of each period. Lying time was recorded for the last 7 d of each period. A tendency for interaction between feed bunk space and frequency of feed delivery on the feed efficiency of limit-fed dairy heifers was noted. Heifers provided restricted bunk space were reported as being less efficient when fed 2 ×/d; however, no other interactions were found. Although DMI and variability in ADG were similar between treatments, ADG was higher (1.0 vs. 0.9 kg/d) when heifers were provided with 0.40 m of feed bunk space and tended to be higher when fed 1 ×/d compared with that of heifers given restricted bunk space or fed 2 ×/d. Heifers fed 1 ×/d spent more time feeding throughout the day (70.5 vs. 58.9 min/d) than heifers fed 2 ×/d. Heifers fed at a restricted bunk space or fed 1 ×/d were approximately 25% more variable in feeding time than heifers fed 2 ×/d or with adequate bunk space. Heifers spent a similar amount of time in unrewarded visits to the feed bunk (28.9 min/d). Although feed bunk space did not affect competition (3.6 displacements/d), heifers fed 1 ×/d were displaced twice as frequently than heifers fed 2 ×/d. Regardless of treatment, heifers spent a similar amount of time lying down and standing without eating. Overall, providing sufficient feed bunk space to allow all limit-fed heifers to feed simultaneously improves feed efficiency and ADG and reduces variability in feeding time. Additionally, although delivering feed 1 ×/d resulted in increased competition, it also enabled heifers to gain adequate weight and spend more time feeding each day.

Meta-analysis of the effects of monensin in beef cattle on feed efficiency, body weight gain, and dry matter intake

A meta-analysis of the impact of monensin on growing and finishing beef cattle was conducted after a search of the literature. A total of 40 peer-reviewed articles and 24 additional trial reports with monensin feeding in beef cattle were selected, after meeting apriori quality criteria. Data for each trial were extracted and analyzed using meta-analysis software in STATA. Estimated effect size of monensin was calculated for feed efficiency (FE), ADG, and DMI. Monensin use in growing and finishing beef cattle reduced DMI (P < 0.001) and improved both ADG (P < 0.001) and FE (P < 0.001). The average concentration of monensin in feed across studies was 28.1 mg/kg feed (100% DM) and this resulted in approximately a 6.4% (but only 2.5 to 3.5% in the last 2 decades) increase in FE, 3% decrease in DMI, and 2.5% increase in ADG. All 3 outcomes displayed moderate and significant heterogeneity of monensin response (I(2), which is a measure of variation beyond chance, = 29% for FE, 42% for DMI, and 23% for ADG); therefore, random effects models were used for those outcomes. There were no single influential studies that overweighted the findings for any outcome. Meta-regression analysis of the effect sizes obtained from these data showed that dietary factors, dose, and study design were influential in modifying effect size of monensin treatment. Use of corn silage in the diet influenced the effect size of monensin for DMI and FE, with diets containing corn silage resulting in a greater improvement in FE and a larger effect on reducing DMI. Studies conducted to assess multiple doses of monensin showed similar effects to the use of corn silage in the diet. Studies conducted in the United States or with higher ADG in control animals (>1.17 kg/d) showed less effect of monensin on ADG. Pen-level studies showed a greater monensin increase on ADG than did those conducted on individual animals. Linear effect of monensin dose was observed for FE, DMI, and ADG outcomes, with greater effects on improving FE and reducing DMI with larger doses of monensin but lesser improvement in ADG with increasing dose. These findings confirm that monensin improves FE in growing and finishing beef cattle, and that this effect is linear with dose.

Efficacy of halofuginone lactate in the prevention of cryptosporidiosis in dairy calves

To evaluate the efficacy of halofuginone lactate (Halocur; Intervet) when used prophylactically against cryptosporidiosis in dairy calves, 513 Holstein heifer calves were randomly distributed between two experimental groups. Those in the treatment group (n=259) received 0.1 mg halofuginone base per kg bodyweight daily in a 10 ml solution, for the first seven days following birth, while those in the control group (n=254) received an equal volume of a placebo solution. Faecal samples were collected weekly from all calves until three weeks of age to test for Cryptosporidium oocysts and to assess the diarrhoeal status. Growth parameters of the calves were also recorded at approximately four months of age. Calves that received halofuginone were significantly less likely to shed Cryptosporidium oocysts during the course of the study than placebo-treated calves (odds ratio 0.6, 95 per cent confidence interval 0.4 to 0.9, P=0.009). Mean growth measurements of calves in the treated group were consistently higher than those of the control calves (hipometer-derived P=0.052, wither height P=0.097) and mortality was lower in the treated group (P=0.07). However, these differences were not statistically significant (P>0.05). No association was found between the prophylactic use of halofuginone and the incidence of calf diarrhoea.

Definitions and diagnosis of postpartum endometritis in dairy cows

The objectives of this observational study were to determine and compare diagnostic criteria for postpartum endometritis in dairy cows. Data generated from 1,044 Holstein cows (6 herds) enrolled in a randomized clinical trial were used. Cows were examined for endometritis at 35±3 d (exam 1) and 56±3 d (exam 2) after parturition, using endometrial cytology (cytobrush technique), vaginal discharge scoring (Metricheck device; Simcrotech, Hamilton, New Zealand), and cervical diameter measurement (transrectal palpation). Reproductive data were recorded until 200 d after parturition. Diagnostic criteria for cytological and clinical endometritis were determined based on detrimental effect on subsequent reproductive performance, using logistic regression and Cox proportional hazard models accounting for the effect of herd clustering. Comparison of diagnostic criteria was performed using endometrial cytology as reference test or by quantifying the agreement between diagnostic approaches. At exam 1, diagnostic criteria were ≥6% polymorphonuclear cells and mucopurulent or worse (purulent or foul) vaginal discharge for cytological and clinical endometritis, respectively. At exam 2, diagnostic criteria were ≥4% polymorphonuclear cells and mucopurulent or worse vaginal discharge for cytological and clinical endometritis, respectively. Cows were classified as having cytological endometritis only, clinical endometritis only, or both cytological and clinical endometritis. Prevalence at exam 1 was 13.5, 9.4, and 5.8% for cytological endometritis only, clinical endometritis only, and both cytological and clinical endometritis, respectively. The detrimental effects of cytological and clinical endometritis on reproductive performance were additive. Among cows with clinical endometritis, only 38 and 36% had cytological endometritis at exam 1 and exam 2, respectively. Combination of diagnostic criteria improved neither the accuracy for predicting cytological endometritis nor the agreement between cytological and clinical endometritis. Overall, these results suggested that cytological and clinical endometritis may represent different manifestations of reproductive tract disease. They also suggested that use of the terminology clinical endometritis may not be accurate and that purulent vaginal discharge may be more descriptive.

The effect of meloxicam on behavior and pain sensitivity of dairy calves following cautery dehorning with a local anesthetic

Effects of a single injection of meloxicam on calf behavior, pain sensitivity, and feed and water intakes were examined following dehorning. Sixty Holstein heifer calves were blocked by age and randomly assigned to receive an i.m. injection of meloxicam (0.5 mg/kg) or a placebo. All calves were given a lidocaine cornual nerve block (5 mL per horn). Treatments and nerve blocks were administered 10 min before cautery dehorning. Continuous sampling of behavior was performed during five 1-h intervals using video recordings, and total daily activity was monitored using an accelerometer. A pain sensitivity test was administered with a pressure algometer, and feed and water intakes were recorded daily. Calves were sham-dehorned 24 h before actual dehorning to establish baseline values, and all variables were assessed at the same times following dehorning and sham dehorning for up to 48 h post-dehorning. Meloxicam-treated calves displayed less ear flicking during the 44 h following dehorning (increases of 4.29+/-1.10 and 1.31+/-0.66 ear flicks/h in the first 24 h, and increases of 3.27+/-0.89 and 0.55+/-0.50 ear flicks/h during the second 24 h, for control and meloxicam calves, respectively) and less head shaking during the first 9 h following dehorning (increase of 2.53+/-0.54 and 0.85+/-0.46 headshakes/h over baseline for control and meloxicam, respectively). Meloxicam-treated calves were less active than controls during the first 5 h following dehorning (activity 34.1+/-3.2 and 30.6+/-2.6 for control and meloxicam, respectively) and displayed less sensitivity to pressure algometry 4 h after dehorning (pressure tolerance of 1.62+/-0.13 kg of force and 2.13+/-0.15 kg of force for control and meloxicam calves, respectively). Changes in behavior suggest that meloxicam was effective for reducing post-surgical pain and distress associated with calf dehorning.

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug therapy for neonatal calf diarrhea complex: Effects on calf performance

The aim of this study was to examine the efficacy of meloxicam (MEL) as supportive therapy for calves with neonatal calf diarrhea complex. For this double-blind controlled trial, 62 Holstein male calves were purchased at birth and transported to a research facility. At the naturally occurring onset of diarrhea, defined as the first occurrence of a fecal score greater than 2 on a 4-point scale, calves were enrolled in the study. Each calf with diarrhea was randomly assigned to receive a single subcutaneous injection of MEL at a rate of 0.5 mg/kg of BW or an equal volume of placebo (PLA) solution. Milk, starter ration, and water intakes were determined daily for each calf from arrival until 56 d of age. The calves were weighed on arrival and each week thereafter. Time to weaning and weaning weight were recorded for each calf. Crude associations between treatment and each outcome variable were examined using t-tests and Pearson chi-squared tests. Subsequently, multivariable regression models were constructed to examine the impact of MEL therapy on meaningful outcome variables. The primary experimental unit in all analyses was the individual calf. In total, 56 calves presented with clinical signs of diarrhea and were enrolled in the study. Two PLA-treated calves died after being enrolled in the study, and there was no calf mortality among the MEL-treated calves. For calves that developed diarrhea after 10 d of age, MEL-treated calves were more likely to consume their entire daily milk allowance (P < 0.05) as compared with PLA-treated calves. Meloxicam-treated calves began consuming starter ration earlier (P < 0.01) and at a greater rate (P < 0.001), and consumed more water (P < 0.001) compared with PLA-treated animals. Over the study period, calves treated with MEL gained BW at a faster rate (P < 0.01) than calves treated with PLA. There was no difference in weaning weight (P > 0.05), but MEL-treated calves tended to wean earlier (P = 0.11) than PLA-treated calves. These results demonstrate that calves receiving a single injection of MEL at the onset of diarrhea had improved appetite and performance compared with PLA-treated calves. Thus, MEL is an effective supportive therapy for neonatal calf diarrhea complex.

Impact of hyperketonemia in early lactation dairy cows on health and production

Data from 1,010 lactating lactating, predominately component-fed Holstein cattle from 25 predominately tie-stall dairy farms in southwest Ontario were used to identify objective thresholds for defining hyperketonemia in lactating dairy cattle based on negative impacts on cow health, milk production, or both. Serum samples obtained during wk 1 and 2 postpartum and analyzed for beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHBA) concentrations that were used in analysis. Data were time-ordered so that the serum samples were obtained at least 1 d before the disease or milk recording events. Serum BHBA cutpoints were constructed at 200 micromol/L intervals between 600 and 2,000 micromol/L. Critical cutpoints for the health analysis were determined based on the threshold having the greatest sum of sensitivity and specificity for predicting the disease occurrence. For the production outcomes, models for first test day milk yield, milk fat, and milk protein percentage were constructed including covariates of parity, precalving body condition score, season of calving, test day linear score, and the random effect of herd. Each cutpoint was tested in these models to determine the threshold with the greatest impact and least risk of a type 1 error. Serum BHBA concentrations at or above 1,200 micromol/L in the first week following calving were associated with increased risks of subsequent displaced abomasum [odds ratio (OR) = 2.60] and metritis (OR = 3.35), whereas the critical threshold of BHBA in wk 2 postpartum on the risk of abomasal displacement was >or=1,800 micromol/L (OR = 6.22). The best threshold for predicting subsequent risk of clinical ketosis from serum obtained during wk 1 and wk 2 postpartum was 1,400 micromol/L of BHBA (OR = 4.25 and 5.98, respectively). There was no association between clinical mastitis and elevated serum BHBA in wk 1 or 2 postpartum, and there was no association between wk 2 BHBA and risk of metritis. Greater serum BHBA measured during the first and second week postcalving were associated with less milk yield, greater milk fat percentage, and less milk protein percentage on the first Dairy Herd Improvement test day of lactation. Impacts on first Dairy Herd Improvement test milk yield began at BHBA >or=1,200 micromol/L for wk 1 samples and >or=1,400 micromol/L for wk 2 samples. The greatest impact on yield occurred at 1,400 micromol/L (-1.88 kg/d) and 2,000 micromol/L (-3.3 kg/d) for sera from the first and second week postcalving, respectively. Hyperketonemia can be defined at 1,400 micromol/L of BHBA and in the first 2 wk postpartum increases disease risk and results in substantial loss of milk yield in early lactation.

Effects of monensin and dietary soybean oil on milk fat percentage and milk fatty acid profile in lactating dairy cows

The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of monensin (MN) and dietary soybean oil (SBO) on milk fat percentage and milk fatty acid (FA) profile. The study was conducted as a randomized complete block design with a 2 x 3 factorial treatment arrangement using 72 lactating multiparous Holstein dairy cows (138 +/- 24 d in milk). Treatments were [dry matter (DM) basis] as follows: 1) control total mixed ration (TMR, no MN) with no supplemental SBO; 2) MN-treated TMR (22 g of MN/kg of DM) with no supplemental SBO; 3) control TMR including 1.7% SBO; 4) MN-treated TMR including 1.7% SBO; 5) control TMR including 3.4% SBO; and 6) MN-treated TMR including 3.4% SBO. The TMR (% of DM; corn silage, 31.6%; haylage, 21.2%; hay, 4.2%; high-moisture corn, 18.8%; soy hulls, 3.3%; and protein supplement, 20.9%) was offered ad libitum. The experiment consisted of a 2-wk baseline, a 3-wk adaptation, and a 2-wk collection period. Monensin, SBO, and their interaction linearly reduced milk fat percentage. Cows receiving SBO with no added MN (treatments 3 and 5) had 4.5 and 14.2% decreases in milk fat percentage, respectively. Cows receiving SBO with added MN (treatments 4 and 6) had 16.5 and 35.1% decreases in milk fat percentage, respectively. However, the interaction effect of MN and SBO on fat yield was not significant. Monensin reduced milk fat yield by 6.6%. Soybean oil linearly reduced milk fat yield and protein percentage and linearly increased milk yield and milk protein yield. Monensin and SBO reduced 4% fat-corrected milk and had no effect on DM intake. Monensin interacted with SBO to linearly increase milk fat concentration (g/100 g of FA) of total trans-18:1 in milk fat including trans-6 to 8, trans-9, trans-10, trans-11, trans-12 18:1 and the concentration of total conjugated linoleic acid isomers including cis-9, trans-11 18:2; trans-9, cis-11 18:2; and trans-10, cis-12 18:2. Effect of Isoflupredone Acetate With or Without Insulin on Energy Metabolism, Reproduction, Milk Production, and Health in Dairy Cows in Early Lactation

Glucocorticoids are commonly used to treat cows with clinical ketosis and fatty liver disease, but their use is controversial. The objectives of the present study were to investigate the effects of isoflupredone acetate alone or with insulin on the energy metabolism of dairy cows in early lactation in a large double-blind, randomized clinical trial. A total of 1,162 Holstein cows and first-lactation heifers were randomly assigned to receive 1 of 3 treatments between the day of parturition and 8 DIM: group A, 20-mg i.m. injection of isoflupredone and 100 units of insulin; group B, 20-mg i.m. injection of isoflupredone; group C (control group), 10-mL i.m. injection of sterile water. Treatments were randomized across 24 dairy farms located near Guelph, Ontario, Canada. Serum samples obtained at the time of treatment and at wk 1 and 2 following treatment were analyzed for beta-hydroxybutyrate, nonesterified fatty acids, glucose, calcium, potassium, sodium, and chloride. Cows were assigned a body condition score at the time of enrollment. Data were analyzed using a repeated-measures mixed model that accounted for the effects of parity and body condition score, and the random effects of cow and farm. Cows that received isoflupredone with insulin and isoflupredone alone had higher beta-hydroxybutyrate and nonesterified fatty acid concentrations 1 wk after treatment compared with control cows. Cows that received isoflupredone acetate plus insulin had lower glucose concentrations at 1 wk after treatment. Calcium concentrations 1 wk after treatment were lower for cows that received isoflupredone and insulin or isoflupredone only compared with control cows. Serum sodium, potassium, and chloride concentrations were not influenced by treatment. The effect of treatment on the proportion of cows with subclinical ketosis was evaluated with a logistic regression model. Over the 2 wk following treatment, a significant increase in the prevalence of subclinical ketosis was observed in the isoflupredone plus insulin group relative to the control group. Among 972 cows that were not ketotic at enrollment, cows that received isoflupredone acetate plus insulin or isoflupredone acetate only were, respectively, 1.72 and 1.59 times more likely than control cows to develop subclinical ketosis 1 wk after treatment. There were no treatment effects on test-day milk production, milk fat and protein percentages, or the intervals from calving to first insemination or pregnancy.
