Abstract
Background Clinical anxiety is a generalized state characterized by feelings of apprehensive expectation and is distinct from momentary responses such as fear or stress. In contrast, most laboratory tests of anxiety focus on acute responses to momentary stressors. Methods Apprehensive expectation was induced by subjecting mice (for 18 days) to manipulations in which a running response (experiment 1) or a conditioned stimulus (experiment 2) were unpredictably paired with reward (food) or punishment (footshock). Before this treatment, the mice were tested in an open field and light/dark box to assess momentary responses that are asserted to reflect state anxiety. After treatment, the mice were assessed for state anxiety in an elevated plus maze, social interaction test, startle response test, intrusive object burying test, and stress-induced corticosterone elevations. In experiment 3, we treated mice similarly to experiment 1, but after mixed-valence training, some mice received either no additional training, additional mixed-valence training, or were shifted to consistent (predictable) reinforcement with food. Results We consistently observed an increase in anxiety-like behaviors after the experience with mixed-valence unpredictable reinforcement. This generalized anxiety persisted for at least 4 weeks after the mixed-valence training and could be reversed if the mixed-valence training was followed by predictable reinforcement with food. Conclusions Results indicate that experience with unpredictable reward/punishment can induce a chronic state analogous to generalized anxiety that can be mitigated by exposure to stable, predictable conditions. This learned apprehension protocol provides a conceptually valid model for the study of the etiology and treatment of anxiety in laboratory animals.

Abstract
Although observational fear learning has been implicated in the development of phobic-related fears, studies investigating observational learning of fear of bodily symptoms remain scarce. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to investigate whether fear in response to bodily symptoms can be acquired simply by observing a fearful reaction to provocation of aversive bodily symptoms in others. Forty healthy participants underwent an observational fear conditioning paradigm consisting of two phases. In the first phase, participants observed a demonstrator reacting to an aversive bodily symptom provocation (unconditioned stimulus or US, i.e., labored breathing) paired with one conditioned stimulus (CS+) but not with the other one (CS-, both CSs were geometric symbols presented on a screen the demonstrator was watching). In the second phase, participants were directly presented with the same conditioned stimuli, but in the absence of the US. Our results revealed enhanced conditioned fear responses in the beginning of the second phase to the CS + as compared to CS-, as indexed by greater skin conductance and subjective fear responses, as well as greater potentiation of startle eyeblink responses to the CS + as compared to the ITI. Taken together, these findings implicate that fear of bodily symptoms can be learned through observation of others, that is, without first-hand experience of bodily threat.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Unintentional Trauma injuries are one of the leading causes of posttraumatic stress disorder development. However, screening for this condition is not typically included in routine medical care. Research on posttraumatic stress disorder after unintentional injuries sustained during entertainment activities involving risk, has been scarce. This study aimed to analyze the proportion of posttraumatic stress disorder and its risk factors in patients with trauma injuries sustained during bullfighting-related events in Spain. METHODS Two hundred and seventy-four patients were evaluated to determine the presence of posttraumatic stress disorder at least one month after the injury. Data about sociodemographic variables, injury circumstances, characteristics of the injury, and treatments were collected by the surgery team on-site or collected during the follow-up assessment. Diagnosis of posttraumatic stress disorder was made by a trained clinician using a structured clinical interview based on DSM criteria. RESULTS The estimated proportion of was 25.18 % (95 % CI: 20.18 %, 30.18 %). Residing in areas with a bullfighting tradition, female gender, referral to a medical center, hospitalization, events involving fighting bulls, and having been injured by the crowd were significant predictors. LIMITATIONS The short-term follow-up and the inability to evaluate some predictors of interest, including the body site of the injury, the presence of disfigurement, and comorbid anxiety and depression, were noted. CONCLUSION Posttraumatic stress disorder could have a high prevalence in individuals injured in these types of events, especially in women, those who are not familiar with the situation, and those who require medical attention. These results highlight the need for routine screening for posttraumatic stress disorder in individuals with trauma injuries for early symptom management.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIM Anxiety disorder is common; early diagnosis is crucial for management. Anxiety can induce physiological changes in the brain and heart. We aimed to develop an efficient and accurate handcrafted feature engineering model for automated anxiety detection using ECG signals. MATERIALS AND METHODS We studied open-access electrocardiography (ECG) data of 19 subjects collected via wearable sensors while they were shown videos that might induce anxiety. Using the Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale, subjects are categorized into normal, light anxiety, moderate anxiety, and severe anxiety groups. ECGs were divided into non-overlapping 4- (Case 1), 5- (Case 2), and 6-second (Case 3) segments for analysis. We proposed a self-organized dynamic pattern-based feature extraction function-probabilistic binary pattern (PBP)-in which patterns within the function were determined by the probabilities of the input signal-dependent values. This was combined with tunable q-factor wavelet transform to facilitate multileveled generation of feature vectors in both spatial and frequency domains. Neighborhood component analysis and Chi2 functions were used to select features and reduce data dimensionality. Shallow k-nearest neighbors and support vector machine classifiers were used to calculate four (=2 × 2) classifier-wise results per input signal. From the latter, novel self-organized combinational majority voting was applied to calculate an additional five voted results. The optimal final model outcome was chosen from among the nine (classifier-wise and voted) results using a greedy algorithm. RESULTS Our model achieved classification accuracies of over 98.5 % for all three cases. Ablation studies confirmed the incremental accuracy of PBP-based feature engineering over traditional local binary pattern feature extraction. CONCLUSIONS The results demonstrated the feasibility and accuracy of our PBP-based feature engineering model for anxiety classification using ECG signals.

Abstract
Dimensional models of psychopathology may provide insight into mechanisms underlying comorbid depression and anxiety and improve specificity and sensitivity of neuroanatomical findings. The present study is the first to examine neural structure alterations using the empirically derived Tri-level Model. Depression and anxiety symptoms of 269 young adults were assessed using the Tri-level Model dimensions: General Distress (transdiagnostic depression and anxiety symptoms), Anhedonia-Apprehension (relatively specific depression symptoms), and Fears (specific anxiety symptoms). Using structural MRI, gray matter volumes were extracted for emotion generation (amygdala, nucleus accumbens) and regulation (orbitofrontal, ventrolateral, and dorsolateral prefrontal cortex) regions, often implicated in depression and anxiety. Each Tri-level symptom was regressed onto each region of interest, separately, adjusting for relevant covariates. General Distress was significantly associated with smaller gray matter volumes in bilateral orbitofrontal cortex and ventrolateral prefrontal cortex, independent of Anhedonia-Apprehension and Fears symptom dimensions. These results suggests that prefrontal alterations are associated with transdiagnostic dysphoric mood common across depression and anxiety, rather than unique symptoms of these disorders. Additionally, no regions of interest were associated with Anhedonia-Apprehension or Fears, highlighting the importance of studying transdiagnostic features of depression and anxiety. This has implications for understanding mechanisms of and interventions for depression and anxiety.

Abstract
Studies from rodents to primates and humans indicate that individuals vary in how resilient they are to stress, and understanding the basis of these variations may help improve treatments for depression. Here we explored the potential contribution of the gut microbiome to such variation. Mice were exposed to chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) for 4 weeks then allowed to recover for 3 weeks, after which they were subjected to behavioral tests and categorized as showing low or high stress resilience. The two types of mouse were compared in terms of hippocampal gene expression using RNA sequencing, fecal microbiomes using 16S RNA sequencing, and extent of neurogenesis in the hippocampus using immunostaining of brain sections. Fecal microbiota were transplanted from either type of mouse into previously stress-exposed and stress-naïve animals, and the effects of the transplantation on stress-induced behaviors and neurogenesis in the hippocampus were examined. Finally, we blocked neurogenesis using temozolomide to explore the role of neurogenesis promoted by fecal microbiota transplantation in enhancing resilience to stress. Results showed that highly stress-resilient mice, but not those with low resilience, improved significantly on measures of anhedonia, behavioral despair, and anxiety after 3-week recovery from CUMS. Their feces showed greater abundance of Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium and Romboutsia than feces from mice with low stress resilience, as well as lower abundance of Staphylococcus, Psychrobacter and Corynebacterium. Similarly, highly stress-resilient mice showed greater neurogenesis in hippocampus than animals with low stress resilience. Transplanting fecal microbiota from mice with high stress resilience into previously CUMS-exposed recipients rescued neurogenesis in hippocampus, facilitating recovery from stress-induced depression and cognitive decline. Blockade of neurogenesis with temozolomide abolished recovery of recipients from CUMS-induced depression and cognitive decline in mice transplanted with fecal microbiota from mice with high stress resilience. In conclusion, our results suggested that remodeling of the gut microbiome after stress may reverse stress-induced impairment of hippocampal neurogenesis and thereby promote recovery from stress-induced depression.

Abstract
The subjective nature of human emotions makes them uniquely challenging to investigate in preclinical models. While behavioral assays in rodents aim to evaluate affect (i.e., anxiety, hypervigilance), they often lack ethological validity. Playback of negatively valenced 22-kHz ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs) in rats shows promise as a translational tool to investigate affective processing. Much like how human facial expressions can communicate internal states, rats emit 22-kHz USVs that similarly convey negative affective states to conspecifics indicating possible threat. 22-kHz USV playback elicits avoidance and hypervigilant behaviors, and recruit brain regions comparable to those seen in human brains evoked by viewing fearful faces. Indeed, 22-kHz playback alters neural activity in brain regions associated with negative valence systems (i.e., amygdala, bed nucleus of the stria terminalis, periaqueductal gray) alongside increases in behaviors typically associated with anxiety. Here, we present evidence from the literature that supports leveraging 22-kHz USV playback in rat preclinical models to obtain clinically relevant and translational findings to identify the neural underpinnings of affective processing and neuropathological dysfunction.

Abstract
A main goal in translational neuroscience is to identify neural correlates of psychopathology ("biomarkers") that can be used to facilitate diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment. This goal has led to substantial research into how psychopathology symptoms relate to large-scale brain systems. However, these efforts have not yet resulted in practical biomarkers used in clinical practice. One reason for this underwhelming progress may be that many study designs focus on increasing sample size instead of collecting additional data within each individual. This focus limits the reliability and predictive validity of brain and behavioral measures in any one person. As biomarkers exist at the level of individuals, an increased focus on validating them within individuals is warranted. We argue that personalized models, estimated from extensive data collection within individuals, can address these concerns. We review evidence from two, thus far separate, lines of research on personalized models of (1) psychopathology symptoms and (2) fMRI measures of brain networks. We close by proposing approaches uniting personalized models across both domains to improve biomarker research.

Abstract
In cognitive-behavioral conceptualizations of anxiety, exaggerated threat expectancies underlie maladaptive anxiety. This view has led to successful treatments, notably exposure therapy, but is not consistent with the empirical literature on learning and choice alterations in anxiety. Empirically, anxiety is better described as a disorder of uncertainty learning. How disruptions in uncertainty lead to impairing avoidance and are treated with exposure-based methods, however, is unclear. Here, we integrate concepts from neurocomputational learning models with clinical literature on exposure therapy to propose a new framework for understanding maladaptive uncertainty functioning in anxiety. Specifically, we propose that anxiety disorders are fundamentally disorders of uncertainty learning and that successful treatments, particularly exposure therapy, work by remediating maladaptive avoidance from dysfunctional explore/exploit decisions in uncertain, potentially aversive situations. This framework reconciles several inconsistencies in the literature and provides a path forward to better understand and treat anxiety.

Abstract
Background Depression is a highly prevalent mental disorder, and we found that patients with preoperative depression had worse postoperative improvement in lumbar fusion. Are mental factors related to the prognosis of laminoplasty? Objective To analyze the relationship between depression and clinical outcomes after laminoplasty for the treatment of multilevel CSM. Methods In this retrospective study, 115 patients with multilevel cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM), who underwent laminoplasty and were followed up for more than 1 year, were enrolled in this study from October 2018 to October 2021. Patients with the scores of 21-item Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) ≥ 15 or Hamilton Depression Scale-24 (HAMD-24) > 20 were included in the depression group. The clinical outcomes were evaluated by the changes and recovery rate (RR) of Japanese Orthopaedic Association Scores (JOA) and Neck Disability Index (NDI) respectively. Univariate and multiple linear regression analyses were performed to reveal the relationship between preoperative depressive states and clinical outcomes. Results Fourteen patients were diagnosed with depression by BDI and twenty-nine by HAMD-24. Between the depression group and the non-depression group, the age, gender, smoking history, and duration of symptoms were statistically significant (P < 0.05). Multiple linear regression showed that the BDI scores had a negative relationship with the changes and RR of JOA and NDI, and the HAMD-24 scores had a negative relationship with the changes and RR of JOA. Conclusions Preoperative depression in patients with multilevel CSM can lead to worse prognosis. In order to improve the curative effect of the operation, we should pay attention to the psychological state monitoring and intervention of patients before they receive laminoplasty.

Abstract
In the face of a possible threat, a range of physiological (e.g., increased heart rate) and behavioral (e.g., avoidance or escape) responses are recruited. Here, we will focus on avoidance, in its persistent form one of the core symptoms of anxiety disorders and obsessive-compulsive disorder. The initial goal of fear and avoidance responses is to increase survival, but if they become persistent or overgeneralize, they can disrupt normal daily functioning, and ultimately even result in anxiety-related disorders. Relatedly, acute stress responses promote adaptation and survival, while chronic stress has been found to aggravate pathophysiology. Thus, stress might trigger the transition from adaptive to maladaptive responses, e.g., from goal-directed to persistent avoidance. Animal models are prime tools to unravel if and how stress influences avoidance. This is typically done by performing stress inductions prior to the assessment of (passive or active) avoidance behavior. Despite its clinical relevance, the current literature on this topic is fragmented, and an overall conclusion is lacking. In this Review, we first recapitulate the state of the art regarding stress and active as well as passive avoidance procedures. We then summarize the behavioral effects of acute and chronic stress on active and passive avoidance, and discuss the main neurobiological findings of the field. Finally, we highlight possible reasons for the largely contradictory findings in the literature and we propose strategies to further unravel the effect of stress on avoidance behavior. A deeper understanding of this currently unresolved matter may provide further insights in the etiology and treatment of anxiety-related disorders.

Abstract
The advent of the COVID-19 pandemic forces us to investigate new emotional phenomena, as well as the validity of psychological variables associated with well-being and mental health. In this cross-sectional study with a correlative-predictive scope, there were 265 participants, adults residing in the Republic of Paraguay. The objectives of this research were to determine the predictive power and dominance of the social support and purpose variables for depression, anxiety, and fear of COVID-19. Both social support and purpose presented a significant negative prediction level for depression. In contrast, only social support presented a negative prediction for anxiety and fear of COVID-19, while purpose even presented a positive relationship with respect to the variable. When evaluating the relationship between the variables of social support and purpose, the perception of meaning presented dominance and negative predictive power for depression, while a positive link between destiny-freedom, depression, anxiety, and fear of COVID-19 was obtained. The probable causes of the results are explained; new research is suggested, and it is concluded on the need to review salutogenic psychological concepts in light of the new pandemic context.

Abstract
Generalization of conditioned fear is adaptive in some situations but maladaptive when fear excessively generalizes to innocuous stimuli with incidental resemblance to a genuine threat cue. Recently, empirical interest in fear generalization as a transdiagnostic explanatory mechanism underlying anxiety-related disorders has accelerated. As there are now several studies of fear generalization across multiple types of anxiety-related disorders, the authors conducted a meta-analysis of studies reporting behavioral measures (subjective ratings and psychophysiological indices) of fear generalization in anxiety-related disorder vs. comparison groups. We conducted systematic searches of electronic databases (conducted from January-October 2020) for fear generalization studies involving anxiety-related disorder groups or subclinical analog groups. A total of 300 records were full-text screened and two unpublished datasets were obtained, yielding 16 studies reporting behavioral fear generalization measures. Random-effects meta-analytic models and meta-regressions were applied to the identified data. Fear generalization was significantly heightened in anxiety-related disorder participants (N = 439) relative to comparison participants (N = 428). We did not identify any significant clinical, sample, or methodological moderators. Heightened fear generalization is quantitatively supported as distinguishing anxiety-related disorder groups from comparison groups. Evidence suggests this effect is transdiagnostic, relatively robust to experimental or sample parameters, and that generalization paradigms are a well-supported framework for neurobehavioral investigations of learning and emotion in anxiety-related disorders. We discuss these findings in the context of prior fear conditioning meta-analyses, past neuroimaging investigations of fear generalization in anxiety-related disorders, and future directions and challenges for the field.
