The interface between ice and alcohols analyzed by atomic force microscopy

This study investigates the interface between ice and organic solvents using atomic force microscopy (AFM). Atomically flat ice surfaces were prepared and observed by AFM in 1-octanol, 1-hexanol, and 1-butanol. The results show differences in surface roughness influenced by the interaction of ice and alcohols. Young's modulus of ice was analyzed by force curve measurements, providing valuable insights into the properties of ice in liquid environments. The results showed the characteristics of the ice surface in different solvents, suggesting potential applications in understanding surface and interface phenomena associated with ice under realistic conditions.

Precisely Controlled Polymerization of Two-Dimensional Conducting Polymers in Quasi-Liquid Layer Enables Ultrahigh Sensing Performance

Gas sensors based on conducting polymers offer great potential for high-performance room temperature applications due to their cost-effectiveness, high-sensitivity, and operational advantage. However, their current performance is limited by the deficiency of control in conventional polymerization methods, leading to poor crystallinity and inconsistent material properties. Here, the quasi-liquid layer (QLL) on the ice surface acts as a self-regulating nano-reactor for precise control of thermodynamics and kinetics in the polymerization, resulting in a 7.62 nm thick two-dimensional (2D) polyaniline (PANI) film matching the QLL thickness. The ultra-thin film optimizes the exposure of active sites, enhancing the detection of analyte gases at low concentrations. It is validated by fabricating a chemiresistive gas sensor with the 2D PANI film, demonstrating stable room-temperature detection of ammonia down to 10 ppt in ambient air with an impressive 10% response. This achievement represents the highest sensitivity among sensors of this kind while maintaining excellent selectivity and repeatability. Moreover, the QLL-controlled polymerization strategy offers an alternative route for precise control of the polymerization process for conducting polymers, enabling the creation of advanced materials with enhanced properties.

Spiers Memorial Lecture: Water at interfaces

In this article we discuss current issues in the context of the four chosen subtopics for the meeting: dynamics and nano-rheology of interfacial water, electrified/charged aqueous interfaces, ice interfaces, and soft matter/water interfaces. We emphasize current advances in both theory and experiment, as well as important practical manifestations and areas of unresolved controversy.

Advances in single ice crystal shaping materials: From nature to synthesis and applications in cryopreservation

Antifreeze (glyco) proteins [AF(G)Ps], which are widely present in various extreme microorganisms, can control the formation and growth of ice crystals. Given the significance of cryogenic technology in biomedicine, climate science, electronic energy, and other fields of research, scientists are quite interested in the development and synthesis high-efficiency bionic antifreeze protein materials, particularly to reproduce their dynamic ice shaping (DIS) characteristics. Single ice crystal shaping materials, a promising class of ice-controlling materials, can alter the morphology and growth rate of ice crystals at low temperatures. This review aims to highlight the development of single ice crystal shaping materials and provide a brief comparison between a series of natural and bionic synthetic materials with DIS ability, which include AF(G)Ps, polymers, salts, and nanomaterials. Additionally, we summarize their applications in cryopreservation. Finally, this paper presents the current challenges and prospects encountered in developing high-efficiency and practical single ice crystal shaping materials. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: The formation and growth of ice crystals hold a significant importance to an incredibly broad range of fields. Therefore, the design and fabrication of the single ice crystal shaping materials have gained the increasing popularity due to its key role in dynamic ice shaping (DIS) characteristics. Especially, single ice crystal shaping materials are considered one of the most promising candidates as ice inhibitors, presenting tremendous prospects for enhancing cryopreservation. In this work, we focus on the molecular characteristics, structure-function relationships, and DIS mechanisms of typical natural and biomimetic synthetic materials. This review may provide inspiration for the design and preparation of single ice crystal shaping materials and give guidance for the development of effective cryopreservation agent.

Hierarchical Structuring of Black Silicon Wafers by Ion-Flow-Stimulated Roughening Transition: Fundamentals and Applications for Photovoltaics

Ion-flow-stimulated roughening transition is a phenomenon that may prove useful in the hierarchical structuring of nanostructures. In this work, we have investigated theoretically and experimentally the surface texturing of single-crystal and multi-crystalline silicon wafers irradiated using ion-beam flows. In contrast to previous studies, ions had relatively low energies, whereas flow densities were high enough to induce a quasi-liquid state in the upper silicon layers. The resulting surface modifications reduced the wafer light reflectance to values characteristic of black silicon, widely used in solar energetics. Features of nanostructures on different faces of silicon single crystals were studied numerically based on the mesoscopic Monte Carlo model. We established that the formation of nano-pyramids, ridges, and twisting dune-like structures is due to the stimulated roughening transition effect. The aforementioned variety of modified surface morphologies arises due to the fact that the effects of stimulated surface diffusion of atoms and re-deposition of free atoms on the wafer surface from the near-surface region are manifested to different degrees on different Si faces. It is these two factors that determine the selection of the allowable "trajectories" (evolution paths) of the thermodynamic system along which its Helmholtz free energy, F, decreases, concomitant with an increase in the surface area of the wafer and the corresponding changes in its internal energy, U (dU>0), and entropy, S (dS>0), so that dF=dU - TdS<0, where T is the absolute temperature. The basic theoretical concepts developed were confirmed in experimental studies, the results of which showed that our method could produce, abundantly, black silicon wafers in an environmentally friendly manner compared to traditional chemical etching.

Effect of sodium chloride adsorption on the surface premelting of ice

We characterise the structural properties of the quasi-liquid layer (QLL) at two low-index ice surfaces in the presence of sodium chloride (Na⁺/Cl^-) ions by molecular dynamics simulations. We find that the presence of a high surface density of Na⁺/Cl^- pairs changes the surface melting behaviour from step-wise to gradual melting. The ions lead to an overall increase of the thickness and the disorder of the QLL, and to a low-temperature roughening transition of the air-ice interface. The local molecular structure of the QLL is similar to that of liquid water, and the differences between the basal and primary prismatic surface are attenuated by the presence of Na⁺/Cl^- pairs. These changes modify the crystal growth rates of different facets and the solvation environment at the surface of sea-water ice with a potential impact on light scattering and environmental chemical reactions.

Investigating the quasi-liquid layer on ice surfaces: a comparison of order parameters

Ice surfaces are characterized by pre-melted quasi-liquid layers (QLLs), which mediate both crystal growth processes and interactions with external agents. Understanding QLLs at the molecular level is necessary to unravel the mechanisms of ice crystal formation. Computational studies of the QLLs heavily rely on the accuracy of the methods employed for identifying the local molecular environment and arrangements, discriminating between solid-like and liquid-like water molecules. Here we compare the results obtained using different order parameters to characterize the QLLs on hexagonal ice (Ih) and cubic ice (Ic) model surfaces investigated with molecular dynamics (MD) simulations in a range of temperatures. For the classification task, in addition to the traditional Steinhardt order parameters in different flavours, we select an entropy fingerprint and a deep learning neural network approach (DeepIce), which are conceptually different methodologies. We find that all the analysis methods give qualitatively similar trends for the behaviours of the QLLs on ice surfaces with temperature, with some subtle differences in the classification sensitivity limited to the solid-liquid interface. The thickness of QLLs on the ice surface increases gradually as the temperature increases. The trends of the QLL size and of the values of the order parameters as a function of temperature for the different facets may be linked to surface growth rates which, in turn, affect crystal morphologies at lower vapour pressure. The choice of the order parameter can be therefore informed by computational convenience except in cases where a very accurate determination of the liquid-solid interface is important.

Scratch-Healing Behavior of Ice by Local Sublimation and Condensation

We show that the surface of ice is scratch healing: micrometer-deep scratches in the ice surface spontaneously disappear by thermal relaxation on the time scale of roughly an hour. Following the dynamics and comparing it to different mass transfer mechanisms, we find that sublimation from and condensation onto the ice surface is the dominant scratch-healing mechanism. The scratch-healing kinetics shows a strong temperature dependence, following an Arrhenius behavior with an activation energy of ΔE = 58.6 ± 4.6 kJ/mol, agreeing with the proposed sublimation mechanism and at odds with surface diffusion or fluid flow or evaporation-condensation from a quasi-liquid layer.

Structure of the electrical double layer at the ice-water interface

The surface of ice in contact with water contains sites that undergo deprotonation and protonation and can act as adsorption sites for aqueous ions. Therefore, an electrical double layer should form at this interface and existing models for describing the electrical double layer at metal oxide-water interfaces should be able to be modified to describe the surface charge, surface potential, and ionic occupancy at the ice-water interface. I used a surface complexation model along with literature measurements of the zeta potential of ice in brines of various strength and pH to constrain equilibrium constants. I then made predictions of ion site occupancy, surface charge density, and partitioning of counterions between the Stern and diffuse layers. The equilibrium constant for cation adsorption is more than 5 orders of magnitude larger than the other constants, indicating that this reaction dominates even at low salinity. Deprotonated OH sites are predicted to be slightly more abundant than dangling O sites, consistent with previous work. Surface charge densities are on the order of ±0.001 C/m² and are always negative at the moderate pH values of interest to atmospheric and geophysical applications (6-9). In this pH range, over 99% of the counterions are contained in the Stern layer. This suggests that diffuse layer polarization will not occur because the ionic concentrations in the diffuse layer are nearly identical to those in the bulk electrolyte and that electrical conduction and polarization in the Stern layer will be negligible due to reduced ion mobility.

Unique phase behavior of a room-temperature ionic liquid, trimethylpropylammonium bis(fluorosulfonyl)amide: surface melting and its crystallization

The phase behavior of a representative ammonium-based ionic liquid, trimethylpropylammonium bis(fluorosulfonyl)amide ([N1113][FSA]), was investigated using a laboratory-made differential scanning calorimeter (DSC). The apparatus possesses extremely high sensitivities with stability of ±2 nW in thermal flux and ±1 mK in temperature and a very slow scanning rate of 0.001 mK s-1 in the slowest scanning speed. Besides two ordinary signals from crystallization and melting, a very weak exothermic peak, 1/1000 times that of the main crystallization peak, was observed during the cooling process. The peak was assigned to the crystallization of the surface-melting layer. Both the normal and novel crystallizations occurred during the structural relaxation process. The thickness of the surface-melting layer was estimated to be roughly 70-200 nm. To study the details of the melting processes, DSC experiments were performed with very slow scanning rates (0.02 and 0.03 mK s-1). Two novel endothermic peaks were found in the usual melting trace for the sample with the surface crystallization, and no unusual peaks were observed in the sample without the surface crystallization. We believe that the structure of the surface crystallization phase is different from that of the bulk crystalline phase.

Hydrogen order at the surface of ice Ih revealed by vibrational spectroscopy

A combination of heterodyne-detected sum frequency generation spectroscopy and theoretical modeling elucidates that the surface of ice I_h at 100 K has hydrogen order with the OH group pointing upward to the air (“H-up” orientation).

Microstructural characterization of snow, firn and ice

This paper provides an overview of techniques used to characterize the microstructure of snow, firn and ice. These range from traditional optical microscopy techniques such as examining thin sections between crossed polarizers to various electron-optical and X-ray techniques. Techniques that could have an impact on microstructural characterization of snow, firn and ice in the future are briefly outlined. This article is part of the theme issue 'The physics and chemistry of ice: scaffolding across scales, from the viability of life to the formation of planets'.

Selective trapping of CO2 gas and cage occupancy in CO2-N2 and CO2-CO mixed gas hydrates

Hydrate-based CO2 trapping from CO2-N2 and CO2-CO gas mixtures is shown by Raman spectroscopy - the results are of interest for new separation and capture technology. A better trapping efficiency is measured for low CO2 concentrations and N2-based gas mixtures. Moreover, it is observed that CO molecules would impede hydrate formation from ice when a CO-enriched gas mixture is considered.
