Abstract
An impedimetric-based biosensor constructed using gold nanoparticles (AuNP) entrapped within titanium dioxide (TiO2) particles for hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) detection is the main feature of this research. The matrix of the biosensor employed the surface of TiO2, which was previously modified with an amine terminal group using 3-Aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTS) at a low temperature to create a ready to immobilise surface for the biosensor application. Hemoglobin (Hb), which exhibits peroxidase-like activity, was used as the bioreceptor in the biosensor to detect H2O2 in solution. The analysis was carried out using an alternative impedance method, in which the biosensor exhibited a wide linear range response between 1 × 10−4 M and 1.5 × 10−2 M and a limit of detection (LOD) of 1 × 10−5 M without a redox mediator.

Abstract
This paper describes for the first time the selection of aptamers selective to penicillin. Aptamers were selected using a specific process called Capture-SELEX (Systematic Evolution of Ligands by Exponential Enrichment). This technique is based on the selection of DNA aptamers using penicillin G in solution while the ssDNA library is fixed on a support. One aptamer showing a good affinity to penicillin was finally selected and tested in electrochemical sensor configuration, using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy as detection technique. The developed aptasensor allowed the detection of penicillin in a wide concentration range, comprised between 0.4 and 1000µgL-1 Such performance was compatible with milk analysis, as the maximum residue limit tolerated in this matrix is 4µgL-1. The selectivity of the developed sensor was also studied, showing that the sensor was also able to bind other beta-lactam antibiotics, although with a weaker affinity. Finally the sensor was used for detection of penicillin G in milk. It was shown that a simple sample treatment with isopropanol followed by filtration was sufficient to eliminate matrix effects, allowing the determination of penicillin in milk at concentrations compatible with legislation requirements.

Abstract
Rapid detection of sarcosine is a key requirement for both diagnosis and treatment of disease. We report here a simple yet sensitive colorimetric nanocomposite platform for rapid detection of sarcosine in alkaline media. The approach exploited the benefits of a rapid color-producing reaction between an organic indicator, 1,2-naphthoquinone-4-sulphonic acid sodium salt (NQS), and the analyte of sarcosine species as well as the good catalytic ability of graphene oxide (GO) to the formation of highly colored products due to its good water dispersibility, extremely large surface area and facile surface modification. As a result, a NQS functionalized GO nanocomposite through π-π stacking has been demonstrated to be useful as a highly efficient catalyst system for the selective and sensitive colorimetric determination of sarcosine by providing a nanocomposite-amplified colorimetric response. Meanwhile, the strategy offered excellent selectivity toward sarcosine species against other amino acids as well as a satisfying detection limit of 0.73 μM. More importantly, by using an electrochemical method, a credible sensing mechanism of GO nanocomposite-based colorimetric platform for a special analyte determination can be easily verified and elucidated, which also provides an attractive alternative to conventional characterization strategies.

Abstract
An aptasensor was designed for the determination of aflatoxin M1 (AFM1) in milk based on DNA-aptamer recognition and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy detection. A hexaethyleneglycol-modified 21-mer oligonucleotide was immobilized on a carbon screen-printed electrode through carbodiimide immobilization, after diazonium activation of the sensing surface. Cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy in the presence of ferri/ferrocyanide redox probe were used to characterize each step of the aptasensor development. Aptamer-AFM1 interaction induced an increase in electron-transfer resistance, allowing the determination of AFM1 in buffer in the range 2-150 ng/L (LOD=1.15 ng/L). Application to milk analysis showed that a preliminary treatment was mandatory. A simple filtration through a 0.2 µm PTFE membrane allowed determination of AFM1 in milk for concentrations ranging from 20 to 1000 ng/kg. These performances are compatible with the AFM1 levels set in European Union for milk and dairy products for adults (50 ng/kg) and infants (25 ng/kg).

Abstract
Okadaic acid (OA), a lipophilic phycotoxin is mainly produced by toxigenic dinoflagellates. The need to develop high performing methods for OA analysis able to improve the traditional ones is evident. In this work, a novel experimental methodology for label-free detection of OA was developed. Protein G magnetic beads (protein-G-MBs) modified gold electrode was used to immobilize anti-OA monoclonal antibody (anti-OA-MAb). Preliminary, colorimetric tests were performed in order to validate protein-G-MBs and anti-OA-MAb reaction. Electrochemical detection was carried out by differential pulse voltammetry in ferri/ferrocyanide solution. The limit of detection value obtained (0.5 μg L(-1)) validated the developed electrochemical immunosensor as a promising tool for routine use. The matrix effect and the recovery rate were also assessed with real samples, showing a good percentage of recovery.

Abstract
In recent years, colorimetric biosensing has attracted much attention because of its low cost, simplicity, and practicality. Since color changes can be read out by the naked eye, colorimetric biosensing does not require expensive or sophisticated instrumentation and may be applied to field analysis and point-of-care diagnosis. For transformation of the detection events into color changes, a number of smart materials have been developed, including gold nanoparticles, magnetic nanoparticles, cerium oxide nanoparticles, carbon nanotubes, graphene oxide, and conjugated polymers. Here, we focus on recent developments in colorimetric biosensing using these smart materials. Along with introducing the mechanisms of color changes based on different smart materials, we concentrate on the design of biosensing assays and their potential applications in biomedical diagnosis and environmental monitoring.

Abstract
A novel label-free electrochemical impedimetric immunosensor for sensitive detection of ochratoxin A (OTA) was reported. A two-step reaction protocol was elaborated to modify the gold electrode. The electrode was first derivatized by electrochemical reduction of in situ generated 4-carboxyphenyl diazonium salt (4-CPDS) in acidic aqueous solution yielded stable 4-carboxyphenyl (4-CP) monolayer. The ochratoxin A antibody was then immobilized making use of the carbodiimide chemistry. The steps of the immunosensor elaboration and the immunochemical reaction between ochratoxin A and the surface-bound antibody were interrogated using cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The impedance change, due to the specific immuno-interaction at the immunosensor surface was utilized to detect ochratoxin A. The increase in electron-transfer resistance (DeltaR(et)) values was linearly proportional to the concentration of OTA in the range of 1-20ngmL(-1), with a detection limit of 0.5ngmL(-1).

Abstract
The phytohormone abscisic acid (ABA) is the major player in mediating the adaptation of plants to stress. Previously developed phytohormonal biosensors usually employed indirect detection of the products of conjugated oxidase reactions. A label-free electrochemical impedance immunosensor for ABA detection was developed using an anti-ABA antibody adsorbed directly on a porous nanogold film. The film was produced electrochemically on a glassy carbon electrode in 0.008 mol/L hydrogen tetrachloroaurate solution containing 0.004 mol/L lead acetate with an applied potential of -0.5 V (versus Ag/AgCl) for 50 s. The anti-ABA antibody was immobilized onto the porous nanogold through electrostatic adsorption and covalent conjugation. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy was used to characterize the successful construction of the porous nanogold film and the stepwise modification of the glassy carbon electrode. The concentration increase of the antigen brought about a decrease of the interfacial electron transfer, which also meant an increase of the impedance signal. The experimental parameters pH, antibody incubation time, and antibody concentration were optimized. The results showed significant linearity R = 0.9942, with the content of ABA in the range 0.5-5,000 ng/mL with a detection limit at about 0.1 ng/mL.

Abstract
Amplification of the electrochemical impedance and capacitance signals in a biosensor is demonstrated for the model fluorescein/anti-fluorescein system. Following immobilization of fluorescein onto Au through formation of a self-assembled monolayer, goat anti-fluorescein conjugated with 10-nm Au nanoparticles is introduced into the system. This results in an increase in the capacitance of approximately 400 nF/cm(2), whereas no change can be observed for goat anti-fluorescein without the Au nanoparticle conjugate. An even greater sensitivity is obtained by introduction of a redox probe, [Fe(CN)6]3-/4-, whereby the charge-transfer resistance (R(ct)) is reduced to approximately 25% of its original value. This allows construction of high-sensitivity electrochemical impedance biosensors at a single low frequency, where the signal is sensitive to the interfacial R(ct). This change in the electrochemical impedance signal upon binding to goat anti-fluorescein conjugated with Au nanoparticles can be attributed to the much higher electrochemical activity of Au surfaces relative to the underlying organic layer.

Abstract
Recently a periplasmic glucose/galactose binding protein, GGRQ26C, immobilized on a gold surface has been used as an active part of a glucose biosensor based on quartz microbalance technique. However the nature of the glucose detection was not clear. Here we have found that the receptor protein film immobilized on the gold surface increases its rigidity when glucose is added, which explains the unexpected detection signal. To study the rigidity change, we developed a new fast and simple method based on using atomic force microscopy (AFM) in tapping mode. The method was verified by explicit measurements of the Young's modulus of the protein film by conventional AFM methods. Since there are a host of receptors that undergo structural change when activated by ligand, AFM can play a key role in the development and/or optimization of biosensors based on rigidity changes in biomolecules.
