Research on the integrated solution of physical education based on smart campus

To improve the physical education experience for students, this study investigates the idea of an integrated solution based on a smart campus for physical education. Within the physical education curriculum, the study focuses on the integration of smart fitness monitoring and wearables, interactive fitness equipment and gamification, mobile applications and customized workout plans, smart facilities, indoor navigation, and data-driven curriculum enhancements. The data gathered from a study involving two groups of students, an experimental group with access to smart campus solutions and a control group without such access, was analyzed using an organized and component-based framework. The data study looks at how the smart campus solutions affect the students' academic performance, fitness levels, motivation, and adherence to exercise regimens. The analyzed findings point to a few advantages of using smart campus technologies in physical education. Compared to the control group, students in the experimental group showed higher levels of academic performance, increased motivation, improved exercise adherence, and fitness. Students who had access to smart campus solutions reported much better experiences with physical education overall. The results imply that smart campus technologies have the potential to produce a physical education learning environment that is more interesting, focused on the needs of the students, and effective. The Effects of the COVID-19 Pandemic on the Clinical Practicum of Undergraduate Nursing and Midwifery Students in Jordan: A Descriptive Survey

Introduction

The effects of COVID-19 lockdowns and the discontinued face-to-face clinical practicum had negative consequences on nursing and midwifery students at many levels. The clinical learning environment includes all the training and learning experiences that nursing students undergo during their clinical practicum.

Objectives

This study aimed to assess the effects of the COVID-19 lockdowns on the nursing and midwifery students' practicum training in governmental and private universities and academic faculties of nursing in Jordan.

Methods

A descriptive cross-sectional study of 1025 nursing and midwifery students from academic faculties of nursing of both governmental and private Jordanian universities was conducted in September 2021. The research group from two Jordanian universities designed and validated a 13-item survey to determine and evaluate the impact of mass lockdowns on nursing and midwifery students' practicum training. The responses were assessed using descriptive and inferential analyses.

Results

The findings revealed that the lockdown had a negative impact on nursing and midwifery students' self-confidence and competency in performing nursing procedures. The academic year of the students was a significant independent predictor of their self-confidence and competency levels in performing nursing procedures.

Conclusion

The study concluded that nursing and midwifery students were dissatisfied with their clinical education during the COVID-19 pandemic, which led to poor self-confidence in performing nursing procedures. The study group recommended repeating the clinical practicum, incorporating extensive laboratory and hospital courses, and implementing a one-year internship for newly graduated nurses and midwives to address the training gap and enhance self-confidence in clinical procedures.

The status of e-learning, personality traits, and coping styles among medical students during the COVID-19 pandemic: a cross-sectional study

Objective

The objective of this study was to explore the learning preferences and habits of medical students during the pandemic home e-learning, and to investigate the incidence of adverse emotions, optimistic character level and coping style. To explore the influencing factors of adverse emotions.

Methods

A cross-sectional survey was conducted in China from March to June 2022. Medical students were recruited from three universities in China, and a questionnaire survey was conducted. The questionnaires consisted of a "e-learning preferences and habits questionnaire", life orientation test questionnaire (LOT-R), and simple coping style questionnaire (SCSQ). Finally, a total of 492 medical students who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria became the research subjects and completed the survey.

Results

A total of 57.7% believed they experienced no adverse emotions during home e-learning. ① During the COVID-19 pandemic, the score of optimistic personality of medical students was (7.25 ± 1.933), and the score of pessimistic personality was (5.82 ± 2.240). The score of positive coping was (21.75 ± 5.379), and the score of negative coping was (11.75 ± 3.611). ② The occurrence of medical students' adverse emotions during e-learning was influenced by "Whether there is a private, quiet space to study", "Degree of knowledge mastery", "Physical discomfort or not", "Keep a regular schedule or not", "Optimistic personality tendency".

Conclusion

This study demonstrates the during home e-learning, most medical students have their own learning equipment and can meet their learning needs. Their favorite mobile device to use is a mobile phone, and their favorite method of teaching is to provide course playback. More than half of medical students believe that they have some inconvenience in conducting research during home e-learning. With regard to teacher's real-time screen, the largest number of medical students support teachers turning on live screens so that they feel like they are interacting with the teacher. The preference for blended teaching is highest among medical students. In general, medical students were highly adaptive of the newest e-learning approach. Based on the statistic analysis, the factors that "Whether there is a private, quiet space to study", "Degree of knowledge mastery", "Physical discomfort or not", "Keep a regular schedule or not", and "Optimistic personality tendency" may be the influencing factors for the occurrence of adverse emotions.

Mobile application-assisted graded exercise practical: a remote teaching strategy to promote motivation and experiential learning in exercise physiology

Practical classes are critical instructional activities in facilitating learning and motivation in health sciences education. With increasing pedagogical activities being conducted in virtual or remote settings, this study assessed how a remote practical assisted by physiological monitoring smartphone applications impacted student motivation and the achievement of intended learning outcomes in exercise physiology teaching. A total of 24 students (out of 30; 80%) were surveyed via a mixed-methods questionnaire containing 27 closed-ended, and 3 the traditional in-class practical in randomized order. Unpaired Student's t tests were performed for comparisons between interventions with a significance level set at P < 0.05. Students reported that both remote and in-class practicals strongly facilitated the achievement of learning outcomes. Self-reported scores for student satisfaction and perceived achievement of learning outcomes were similar between the two practical methodologies. Student motivation scores assessed using the Lab Motivation Scale revealed that students were more motivated during the remote practical, particularly in the effort domain (P < 0.05). This was in line with the identified themes from the qualitative responses that indicated that the remote practical was more engaging than the in-person practical, with greater opportunities for experiential learning and class involvement being the main factors underlying these findings. Taken together, remote practicals can be critical aspects of a blended learning curriculum that encourages student engagement and experiential learning. With further advancements in physiological monitoring wearables and smartphone technologies, remote practicals can be potential alternatives to traditional in-person practicals in exercise physiology teaching.NEW & NOTEWORTHY Remote practical classes, supported by physiological monitoring smartphone applications, were assessed for their utility in facilitating learning and raising student motivation in health sciences education in this study. A comparison of remote practicals with traditional in-class practicals revealed that a remote practical is an effective method for reinforcing physiology learning objectives with the added advantage of increased student motivation. The added value of remote practicals may be attributed to more experiential learning opportunities and increased engagement levels.

The baroreceptor reflex brought to life outside the classroom - an e-learning based asynchronous laboratory class using a non-supervised modified Active Standing Test

BACKGROUND

E-learning based laboratory classes can replace or enhance in-classroom laboratories. They typically offer temporal flexibility, self-determined learning speed, repeatability and do not require supervision or face-to-face contact. The aim of this feasibility study was to investigate whether the established in-classroom laboratory class on the baroreceptor reflex (BRR) can be transformed into a new e-learning based asynchronous laboratory class for untrained, non-supervised students without medical equipment. The BRR is a fundamental cardiovascular process which is regularly visualized in physiology during in-classroom laboratories by a student-performed Active Standing Test (AST). During this voluntary provocation of orthostatic stress, the BRR reliably causes a solid rise in heart rate (HR) and a stabilization or even increase in blood pressure (BP).

METHODS

The conventional AST was modified by omission of BP measurements which would require medical devices and was embedded into a framework of interactive digital material allowing independent student performance. With specific adaptions, this instrument was implemented to 1st and 2nd year curricula of human medicine, dental medicine, midwifery and pharmacy. An audience response system was used to collect the students' data on HR, epidemiology, technical problems, satisfaction and orthostatic symptoms. As primary outcome, we investigated the students' correct performance of the modified AST regarding textbook conformity of the HR data. Secondary outcomes included technical feasibility, the students' satisfaction and consistency of HR data within predefined subgroups (e.g., gender, curricula). Descriptive statistics are reported.

RESULTS

The class was completed by 217 students (mean age: 23 ± 8 [SD], 81% female, 19% male). Mean reported rise of HR during standing was ~ 20 bpm (~ 30%) which is highly concordant to textbooks. Reported feasibility (~ 80% negated any technical issues) and students' satisfaction (4.4 on 5-point Likert-scale) were high. The HR data were consistent within the subgroups.

CONCLUSION

This study demonstrates that the highly relevant BRR can be successfully addressed in an e-learning based asynchronous laboratory class implementing a non-supervised AST restricted to HR measurements embedded in digital material. The robust HR response and the adjustable complexity allow an application to different healthcare-related curricula. This class, therefore, provides a broad audience access to a fundamental concept of cardiovascular physiology.

Identification of the Consequences of COVID-19 through the Analysis of Data Obtained in Surveys of a Specific Population

The pandemic caused by the 2019 coronavirus disease has marked a total change in the development of society. Since then, its effects have been visible in people, both in work, education and psychological areas. There are many jobs and organizations that have set out to identify the reality of people after the pandemic and how the pandemic has affected their daily lives. To do this, countries have organized data and statistics collection campaigns that allow investigating the new needs of people. With this, instruments such as surveys have become more relevant and valid to know what these needs are. However, the analysis processes must guarantee answers that are able to determine the direct impact that each question has on people’s feelings. This work proposes a framework to determine the incidence values of surveys based on their categories and questions and how they capture the reality of people in areas such as education, the impact of work, family and the stress generated by the pandemic. With the results obtained, each element and category that the population considers a consequence of COVID-19 that affects the normal development of life has been identified.

Explaining medical students' learning outcomes in blended course designs: combining self-reported and observational learning experiences

Blended course designs have been increasingly adopted in medical education. However, research on the relations between the key aspects of students' learning experience and their learning outcomes often only measures students' self-reported experience, neglecting what they actually do in learning. This study combined both self-reported and observational measures of students' learning experiences and examined the relations between the two sets of measures and their contributions to learning outcomes. Australian medical students were asked to report their approaches to, and perceptions of, learning. The frequency and duration of their interactions with both online formative and summative tasks were observed and recorded. Correlation analyses showed that the learning outcome was positively related to deep approaches to using online technologies and duration of interactions with online summative tasks. The hierarchical multiple regression analysis found that the self-reported approaches and duration of interactions jointly explained the learning outcomes, accounting for 6% of the variance. The study demonstrated the complementary nature of using both self-reported and observational measures of students' learning experiences to explain the learning outcomes in blended course designs.

A remote laboratory course on experimental human physiology using wearable technology

To help educators deliver their physiology laboratory courses remotely, we developed an inexpensive, customizable hardware kit along with freely available teaching resources. We based the course design on four principles that should allow students to conduct insightful experiments on different physiological systems. First, the experimental setup should not be constrained to laboratory environments. Second, students should be able to take this course without prior coding and electronics experience. Third, the hardware kit should be relatively inexpensive, and all other resources should be freely available. Fourth, all resources should be customizable for educators. The hardware kit consists of commercially available electronic components, with a microcontroller as its hub (Arduino friendly). All measurement systems can be assembled without soldering. The hardware kit is cost-effective (approximately the cost of a textbook) and can be customized depending upon instructional needs. All software is freely available, and we share all necessary codes in open-access online repositories for simple use and customizability. All lab manuals and additional video tutorials are also freely available online and customizable. In our particular course, we have weekly asynchronous physiology lectures and one synchronous laboratory session, where students can get help with their equipment. In this article, we only focus on the novel and open-source laboratory part of the course. The laboratory includes four units [data acquisition, ECG, electromyography (EMG), activity classification] and one final project. It is our intent that these resources will allow other educators to rapidly implement their own remote physiology laboratories or to extend our work into other pedagogical applications of wearable technology.

Nursing students' attitudes toward mobile learning: An integrative review

Purpose

This study aimed to explore whether the attitudes of nursing students toward the use of mobile learning are positive or negative and to identify the factors influencing their attitudes by reviewing the literature.

Methods

Electronic search of six databases, including PubMed, the Cumulative Index of Nursing and Allied Health Literature, ProQuest, Web of Science, EMBASE, and Cochrane Library, was conducted, and relevant references within articles were manually searched. Retrieval time was from inception to October 21, 2020. The literature review was conducted in accordance with the PRISMA guidelines and the integrative review method. The Mixed Method Appraisal Tool (MMAT) was used for quality assessment.

Results

A total of 316 articles were identified, and 18 English-language studies were finally included by reviewing titles, abstracts, and full text. Six quantitative, five qualitative, and seven mixed-method articles related to nursing students’ attitudes toward the use of mobile learning were identified. The results showed that most nursing students had positive attitudes toward mobile learning. Although students expressed strong intentions for mobile learning, the actual usage rate in practical settings was low. Several advantageous factors included usefulness, convenience, and ease of use, whereas disadvantageous factors included hardware facility, updated content, and software stability.

Conclusion

Most nursing students have positive attitudes and willingness to mobile learning, but the actual use rate remains low. Advantageous and disadvantageous factors coexist. Further studies are needed to assess how mobile learning improves nursing students’ clinical knowledge and improves patient care.

Smartphone Use among Undergraduate STEM Students during COVID-19: An Opportunity for Higher Education?

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, students worldwide have continued their education remotely. One of the challenges of this modality is that students need access to devices such as laptops and smartphones. Among these options, smartphones are the most accessible because of their lower price. This study analyzes the usage patterns of smartphone users of undergraduate Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) students during the COVID-19 pandemic. This cross-sectional descriptive study included 365 students: 162 (44.4%) women and 203 (55.6%) men from a Chilean university. The results revealed that students often accessed the learning management system (LMS) with their computers rather than with their smartphones. Students were connected to the LMS for more hours on their computers than on their smartphones. However, they spent more hours simultaneously connected on their computers and smartphones than just on their computers. During the day, students accessed the LMS mainly from 13:00 to 1:00. The number of connections decreased from 1:00 to 8:00 and increased from 8:00 to 13:00. The LMS resource that students accessed the most using smartphones was discussion forums, while the one they accessed the least was wiki pages. We expect these results to motivate faculties to schedule their activities during the hours students tend to be online and promote discussion forums.

International educators' attitudes, experiences, and recommendations after an abrupt transition to remote physiology laboratories

The COVID-19 pandemic triggered university lockdowns, forcing physiology educators to rapidly pivot laboratories into a remote delivery format. This study documents the experiences of an international group of 10 physiology educators surrounding this transition. They wrote reflective narratives, framed by guiding questions, to answer the research question: "What were the changes to physiology laboratories in response to the COVID-19 pandemic?" These narratives probed educators' attitudes toward virtual laboratories before, during, and after the transition to remote delivery. Thematic analysis of the reflections found that before COVID-19 only a few respondents had utilized virtual laboratories and most felt that virtual laboratories could not replace the in-person laboratory experience. In response to university lockdowns, most respondents transitioned from traditional labs to remote formats within a week or less. The most common remote delivery formats were commercially available online physiology laboratories, homemade videos, and sample experimental data. The main challenges associated with the rapid remote transition included workload and expertise constraints, disparities in online access and workspaces, issues with academic integrity, educator and student stress, changes in learning outcomes, and reduced engagement. However, the experience generated opportunities including exploration of unfamiliar technologies, new collaborations, and revisiting the physiology laboratory curriculum and structure. Most of the respondents reported planning on retaining some aspects of the remote laboratories postpandemic, particularly with a blended model of remote and on-campus laboratories. This study concludes with recommendations for physiology educators as to how they can successfully develop and deliver remote laboratories.

S. SK. Nanotechnology: an emerging approach to combat COVID-19

The recent outbreak of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has challenged the survival of human existence in the last 1 year. Frontline healthcare professionals were struggling in combating the pandemic situation and were continuously supported with literature, skill set, research activities, and technologies developed by various scientists/researchers all over the world. To handle the continuously mutating severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) requires amalgamation of conventional technology with emerging approaches. Nanotechnology is science, engineering, and technology dealing at the nanoscale level. It has made possible the development of nanomaterials, nano-biosensors, nanodrugs, and vaccines for diagnosis, therapy, and prevention of COVID-19. This review has elaborately highlighted the role of nanotechnology in developing various detection kits such as nanoparticle-assisted diagnostics, antibody assay, lateral flow immunoassay, nanomaterial biosensors, etc., in detection of SARS-CoV-2. Similarly, various advancements supervene through nanoparticle-based therapeutic drugs for inhibiting viral infection by blocking virus attachment/cell entry, multiplication/replication, and direct inactivation of the virus. Furthermore, information on vaccine development and the role of nanocarriers/nanoparticles were highlighted with a brief outlining of nanomaterial usage in sterilization and preventive mechanisms engineered to combat COVID-19 pandemic.
