Abstract
AIMS To evaluate the utilisation of technologies and associated glycaemia among adults with type 1 diabetes. METHODS De-identified data from adults with type 1 diabetes (≥18 years old) in the Australian National Diabetes Audit (ANDA)-2019 were analysed. Proportions using insulin pumps or injections with continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) or capillary-glucose testing were compared. Technology use among adults was compared to young people (<21 years old) with subsidised CGM. Glycaemia and complication-burden were assessed across management strategies. RESULTS 1,693 adults were analysed. Mean(±SD) age, diabetes duration, and HbA1c were 43.3 ± 17.0 years, 20.3 ± 14.3 years and 8.4% ± 1.7 [68 ± 19 mmol/mol], respectively. Among adults, 40% used at least one device, 27% used insulin pumps, and 23% used CGM. CGM was used by 62% of young people with subsidised access. Mean HbA1c was consistently lower among adults using CGM, insulin pumps, or combined insulin pump and CGM compared to standard care (8.3% ± 1.6 [67 ± 18 mmol/mol], 8.2% ± 1.4 [66 ± 15 mmol/mol], and 7.8% ± 1.4 [62 ± 15 mmol/mol] respectively compared to 8.6% ± 1.8 [70 ± 20 mmol/mol], p < 0.001). Technology use was not associated with diabetic ketoacidosis but CGM was associated with more hypoglycaemia. CONCLUSIONS Government subsidy is an important consideration for utilisation of technologies among adults with type 1 diabetes. Technology use across the adult lifespan was associated with lower HbA1c than insulin injections and capillary-glucose testing.

Abstract
Electronic cigarette(s) (EC) becoming a preferred replacement for nicotine delivery among many smokers in recent years. However, the effect of EC on human health is inconclusive due to a lack of empirical research investigating EC-induced health hazard or benefit. In this study, we examine the effect of vapor produced by EC on exercise performance and health-related profiles in a mouse model. Female ICR mice were divided into five groups (n = 6 per group) and exposed for 14 days. Our results indicate that EC exposure leads to dose-dependent decrease in the grip strength and swimming time of the mice. The EC-treated groups also showed a dose-dependent decrease in liver and muscle glycogen storage. In addition, EC treatment had no negative effect on levels of biochemical indices. We also did not detect any adverse effect or gross abnormalities on the morphology of the major organs.

Abstract
Epidemiological studies have found a negative association between cigarette smoking and Parkinson's disease (PD): PD patients are approximately 50% less likely to have smoked cigarettes than age- and sex-matched controls. In both women and men, the PD protection effect of smoking may be explained by higher levels of phosphate in serum (S-P) and triglycerides (S-TG) in smokers compared to non-smokers. That is, the protecting effect from smoking could be mediated by either a high S-P or high S-TG levels. I suggest that higher S-P as the result of smoking may be associated with intracellular depletion of Pi in skeletal muscle and that this depletion of Pi is associated with increased availability of phosphate for the brain. This increased phosphate availability would protect against PD, as oxidative phosphorylation in the mitochondria is a central and persistent phenomenon in the pathogenesis cascade of PD. Phosphate is necessary for energy production in the form of creatine phosphate (CP) and adenosine-tri-phosphate (ATP) in the brain and skeletal muscle. As such, hypophosphatemia increases risk of cell death. In some clinical instances, this energy depletion may pre-dispose to dopamine neuron death. Mitochondrial dysfunction is associated with the generation of oxidative stress and mediates the induction of apoptosis. Studies with NMR spectroscopy reveal that an energy deficit in brain cells is a strong mark for PD although this differed for men and women. Compared to women, men had lower serum phosphate and ATP levels in the brain (about 15% lower). In addition to sex differences, age, stress, and malnutrition may cause low serum phosphate levels, a situation that could contribute to the lack of energy available to the brain and the risk of PD. As hypophosphatemia is present in overnutrition and has an inverse relation with a high BMI, both obesity and malnutrition are considered to be presumptive risk factor for PD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Both low and high serum phosphate levels may be associated with morbidity and mortality from cardiovascular disease. As smoking increases risk for type 2 diabetes (as shown by dyslipidemia and hyperglycemia), we wanted to study whether smoking and type 2 diabetes were associated with serum phosphate and triglyceride levels independently from other CVD risk factors. METHODS Upon admittance to the Vindeln Health Education Centre (VHE-centre) for a four-week comprehensive lifestyle intervention, the participants (1408 women and 1096 men) completed a questionnaire that included their smoking habits - current smoker or non-smoker. We used multiple linear regression analyses to investigate the association between smoking and other CVD risk factors with S-P and S-TG levels. RESULTS In the non-type 2 diabetes populations, the smokers, compared to the non-smokers, had higher S-P and higher serum triglycerides (S-TG). In women, serum-TG in smokers with type 2 diabetes was higher than in smokers with non-type 2 diabetes. Non-type 2 diabetes patients exhibited an inverse relation between S-Glucose (S-Glu) and S-P and a positive association with S-TG. For men only, an association was seen between age (-) and S-Crea (-) and S-P. For women only, an association was seen between BMI (-) and S-Cholesterol (+) (S-Chol) and S-P. CONCLUSIONS Compared to non-smokers, smoking women with non-type 2 diabetes and smoking men with type 2 diabetes had a higher level of S-P and S-TG. The association between smoking and S-P and S-TG levels still existed after adjusting for age and CVD risk factors in the multiple linear regression analyses. Abstract
Many patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM2) are at risk for micro and macro vascular complications, which could be observed in heavy smokers. Cigarette smoking increases the risk for type 2 diabetes incidence. Nicotine, acknowledged as the major pharmacologically active chemical in tobacco, is responsible for the association between cigarette smoking and development of diabetes. This minireview summarized recent studies on nicotine effects on insulin action and insulin secretion, indicating the impact of nicotine on type 2 diabetes development.

Abstract
Magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) of skeletal muscle has been successfully applied by physiologists over several decades, particularly for studies of high-energy phosphates (by (31)P-MRS) and glycogen (by (13)C-MRS). Unfortunately, the observation of these heteronuclei requires equipment that is typically not available on clinical MR scanners, such as broadband capability and a second channel for decoupling and nuclear Overhauser enhancement (NOE). On the other hand, (1)H-MR spectra of skeletal muscle can be acquired on many routine MR systems and also provide a wealth of physiological information. In particular, studies of intramyocellular lipids (IMCL) attract physiologists and endocrinologists because IMCL levels are related to insulin resistance and thus can lead to a better understanding of major health problems in industrial countries. The combination of (1)H-, (13)C-, and (31)P-MRS gives access to the major long- and short-term energy sources of skeletal muscle. This review summarizes the technical aspects and unique MR-methodological features of the different nuclei. It reviews clinical studies that employed MRS of one or more nuclei, or combinations of MRS with other MR modalities. It also illustrates that MR spectra contain additional physiological information that is not yet used in routine clinical applications.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate whether running influences smoking habits. DESIGN Study of cases and controls, with 1:1 pairing. Retrospective longitudinal observational study. SETTING Primary care. City of Toledo, Spain. PARTICIPANTS CASES 48 healthy volunteer runners of 47+/-7.8 years of age. CONTROLS 48 healthy subjects, paired by gender and year of birth, chosen at random from the medical list assigned to the medical researcher. PRINCIPAL MEASUREMENTS Smoking habits and alcohol consumption in grams per week using a questionnaire, weight, height, blood pressure, and heart rate at rest. The odds ratio (OR) was obtained on the proportion of subjects who smoked or smoked at some time, those who continued smoking and the probabilities of giving up tobacco in each group. RESULTS The OR of the proportion of subjects who smoked or had smoked between the groups of runners (54.2%) and controls (70.9%) was 0.486 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.205-1.149; chi(2)=2.8; P=.093). The OR for continuing the habit between groups of runners (8.4%) and controls (41.7%) was 0.127 (95% CI, 0.035-0.456; chi(2)=14.0; P=.0002). In the group of runners, 45.8% had stopped smoking, as well as 31.2% of the controls (OR=7.85; 95% CI, 1.89-32.52; chi(2)=11.8; P=.0007); 50% of the runners who smoked had given it up since starting to run and 76.9% of these had given it up just at the time of starting to run. CONCLUSIONS There is a negative association between running and tobacco. If a smoker decides to run regularly he/she has high probabilities of giving up smoking and continue to do so.
