Abstract
The use of e-cigarettes or vapes is increasingly popular amongst a range of different demographics however the research in this area is surprisingly sparse. Clinical reports of e-cigarette- or vaping use-associated lung injury (EVALI) and vascular disruption, in both nicotine-containing and nicotine-free e-cigarette smokers, prompts the need for further research with a focus on the pulmonary endothelium. Using a common brand of e-cigarette (eVape) and an in vitro model of the human lung microvasculature, we investigated the effect of nicotine-free eVape fluid on pulmonary endothelial barrier integrity, oxidative stress and inflammation profile. Findings demonstrate reactive oxygen species-dependent breakdown of the pulmonary endothelium and release of inflammatory cytokines. These phenotypic changes, following exposure to nicotine-free eVape fluid, were accompanied by dysregulation of a number of adheren junctions-related genes of which ARF6 was most abundantly overexpressed. Further investigation of ARF6 identified it as a key regulator in eVape-induced barrier disruption and ROS accumulation. This study demonstrates, for the first time, the barrier disruptive effect of nicotine-free e-cigarette fluid on the pulmonary microvasculature and the ARF6 and ROS-dependent molecular mechanisms underlying this damage. Whilst these studies focus on a human in vitro model of the pulmonary microvasculature, the results support clinical case studies on EVALI and demonstrate a need for further investigation of the impact of nicotine-free e-cigarettes on the lung.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Tobacco use remains one of the most used substances among adults globally and substantially impacts individuals and society. Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) contribute to tobacco use. However, the association between cumulative ACEs and tobacco use behaviors (TUB) has not been established in the literature. In this review, we aimed to estimate the prevalence of ACEs among adult tobacco users and evaluated the relationship between cumulative ACEs and TUB. METHODS We identified original articles published before October 2022 by searching PubMed, CINAHL, and Psych INFO databases. Inclusion criteria were: English language, adults and used instruments assessing for cumulative ACEs defined as four or more ACEs. RESULTS Forty-two studies, totaling 674,087 participants; predominantly cohort and cross-sectional in study design (n = 33). Exposure to 4 ≥ ACEs was significantly associated with increasing the odds of current tobacco use (n = 35), ever or former tobacco use (n = 13), tobacco use initiation, (n = 3) nicotine dependence (n = 1), and ever using electronic cigarettes (n = 1). In the meta-analysis, as compared to those without ACEs, those with 4 ≥ ACEs were twice as likely to have ever used tobacco (OR = 2.16, 95 %CI:1.73-2.70) and approximately four times more likely to have used tobacco currently (OR = 3.73, 95 %CI:2.69-5.18). CONCLUSION The cumulative ACEs exposure can increase the risk for TUB. However, the evidence is limited primarily to cigarette use. Ongoing research into the effects of cumulative ACEs on TUB is needed to integrate trauma-informed intervention in treating tobacco use and guide public health initiatives aimed to reduce the prevalence of ACEs and TUB among adults.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The variety of available flavors in e-cigarettes may be a driver for young people to start using these products. The objectives of our study were to examine the relationship between sensation-seeking behavior and e-cigarette use, and to identify the predictors of flavor use patterns among adolescents in Indonesia. METHODS Students aged 15 to 24 years participated from randomly selected high schools and universities in Indonesia. Participants answered questions about their demographic data, e-cigarette use, conventional cigarette use, and sensation-seeking. Flavor preferences were identified from eight different flavor categories. Multivariate multinomial regression analysis was employed to predict conventional cigarette and e-cigarette use among students. A latent class analysis was conducted to determine the number of latent classes of flavor use. RESULTS One thousand six hundred high school and university students, with a mean age of 18.2 years (SD 2.19), were recruited between March and August, 2023. Conventional cigarette use in the past 30 days was higher (16.3%) compared to e-cigarette use (13.3%, p = 0.017), with approximately 8.5% of students were being dual users. Higher levels of sensation-seeking significantly increased the odds of being a current e-cigarette user (OR = 2.54, 95%CI 1.99-3.25) and a current conventional cigarette smoker (OR = 2.38, 95%CI 1.85-3.07). Three groups of flavor classes were identified: 1) primarily menthol flavor users (14%), who had a strong association with current conventional cigarette use; 2) experimenters, who mostly preferred fruit-flavored e-cigarettes (76%); and 3) the multi-flavor user group (10%), who had a higher sensation-seeking tendency. CONCLUSIONS Flavors, especially menthol and fruit flavors, attract youth, broaden the e-cigarette audience and are particularly appealing to high sensation-seekers. Banning these flavors could significantly deter e-cigarette initiation among youth.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The proposed FDA product standard to prohibit menthol as a characterizing flavor in combustible cigarettes has the potential to significantly reduce tobacco-related health disparities. Whether a menthol e-liquid product standard would improve or hinder public health is unknown. No known research has directly examined the impact of menthol vs. tobacco flavored e-liquid use on acute e-cigarette use patterns, subjective experience, behavioral intentions, and craving and withdrawal among menthol cigarette smokers. METHODS Black (n = 47) and White (n = 4) nicotine-deprived menthol smokers with limited e-cigarette experience completed two counterbalanced in-laboratory 30-minute ad libitum vaping sessions with menthol and tobacco nicotine salt-based e-liquid in a randomized crossover pilot trial design. Questionnaires assessed reductions in craving and withdrawal and post-session subjective experience and behavioral intentions. Puff topography was measured continuously throughout each vaping session. RESULTS Measures of puff topography did not differ significantly by e-liquid flavor (all p > .40). Similarly, menthol and tobacco flavored e-cigarettes were both rated positively in terms of subjective effects and behavioral intentions (all p > .10) and about 40 % of participants reported a preference for the tobacco-flavored e-liquid. Finally, participants showed comparable reductions in craving (p = .210) and withdrawal (p = .671) from pre- and post-session regardless of e-liquid flavor. CONCLUSIONS Among menthol smokers in a lab-based setting, findings suggest that menthol vs tobacco e-liquid flavor has little impact on acute changes in puff patterns, subjective experience, behavioral intentions, or craving and withdrawal.

Abstract
Cigarette smoking is positively and robustly associated with cardiovascular disease (CVD), including hypertension, atherosclerosis, cardiac arrhythmias, stroke, thromboembolism, myocardial infarctions, and heart failure. However, after more than a decade of ENDS presence in the U.S. marketplace, uncertainty persists regarding the long-term health consequences of ENDS use for CVD. New approach methods (NAMs) in the field of toxicology are being developed to enhance rapid prediction of human health hazards. Recent technical advances can now consider impact of biological factors such as sex and race/ethnicity, permitting application of NAMs findings to health equity and environmental justice issues. This has been the case for hazard assessments of drugs and environmental chemicals in areas such as cardiovascular, respiratory, and developmental toxicity. Despite these advances, a shortage of widely accepted methodologies to predict the impact of ENDS use on human health slows the application of regulatory oversight and the protection of public health. Minimizing the time between the emergence of risk (e.g., ENDS use) and the administration of well-founded regulatory policy requires thoughtful consideration of the currently available sources of data, their applicability to the prediction of health outcomes, and whether these available data streams are enough to support an actionable decision. This challenge forms the basis of this white paper on how best to reveal potential toxicities of ENDS use in the human cardiovascular system-a primary target of conventional tobacco smoking. We identify current approaches used to evaluate the impacts of tobacco on cardiovascular health, in particular emerging techniques that replace, reduce, and refine slower and more costly animal models with NAMs platforms that can be applied to tobacco regulatory science. The limitations of these emerging platforms are addressed, and systems biology approaches to close the knowledge gap between traditional models and NAMs are proposed. It is hoped that these suggestions and their adoption within the greater scientific community will result in fresh data streams that will support and enhance the scientific evaluation and subsequent decision-making of tobacco regulatory agencies worldwide.

Abstract
The administration of new psychoactive substances (NPS), in particular synthetic cannabinoid receptor agonists (SCRAs), via e-cigarettes, within prison settings has been well publicized. This study provides an overview of five e-cigarette case samples seized from Scottish prisons between May 2022 and July 2023 where the anabolic-androgenic steroids (AASs) mestanolone and oxandrolone were identified following gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis. These e-cigarette samples represented 2.9% of all samples containing e-cigarette cartridges (n = 170) and 9.4% of all samples found to contain AASs (n = 53) seized during the same time period. The AASs were detected in combination with other drugs, including cocaine, Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (Δ9-THC), SCRAs and nicotine. This represents a new and novel route of administration for AASs.

Abstract
Cigarette smoke (CS) exposure is known to cause injury to respiratory tract epithelial cells and is a contributing factor in the development of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and lung cancer. Electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) are gaining popularity as a potential substitute for conventional cigarettes due to their potential for aiding smoking cessation. However, the safety of e-cigarettes remains uncertain, and scientific evidence on this topic is still limited. In this study, we aimed to investigate the effects of CS and e-cigarette smoke (ECS) of different flavors on human lung bronchial epithelial cells. Real-time smoke exposure was carried out using an air-liquid interface system, and cell viability was assessed. RNA-Seq transcriptome analysis was performed to compare the differences between CS and ECS. The transcriptome analysis revealed a significantly higher number of differentially expressed genes in CS than in ECS. Moreover, the impact of mint-flavored e-cigarettes on cells was found to be greater than that of tobacco-flavored e-cigarettes, as evidenced by the greater number of differentially expressed genes. These findings provide a reference for future safety research on traditional cigarettes and e-cigarettes, particularly those of different flavors. The use of omics-scale methodologies has improved our ability to understand the biological effects of CS and ECS on human respiratory tract epithelial cells, which can aid in the development of novel approaches for smoking cessation and lung disease prevention.

Abstract
Introduction: E-cigarette use among young adults is prevalent, with some voicing their desire to quit using e-cigarettes but needing support to do so. Young adults who use e-cigarettes are at risk for progressing to smoking combustible cigarettes, placing them at risk for severe health consequences. Limited research exists describing young adults' lived experiences with using e-cigarettes, e-cigarette cessation, and progression to combustible cigarettes. Methods: Between July and August 2022, nine focus groups were conducted with 33 young adults who either (1) currently used e-cigarettes, (2) formerly used e-cigarettes, or (3) transitioned to cigarettes. Transcripts were coded and themes were identified independently by two research team members while a third researcher reviewed the coding and themes. Results: Participants described social influences, stress, and curiosity as primary reasons why they initiated e-cigarette use. The most reported negative experiences or consequences associated with e-cigarettes include the health effects, addiction, and financial costs. Participants who transitioned to cigarettes reported social influences, a desire to reduce or quit using e-cigarettes by replacing them with cigarettes, curiosity, and stress as the primary reasons for this progression to combustible cigarettes. Participants described barriers to quitting e-cigarettes, including social influences, withdrawal, and easy access to e-cigarettes, as well as facilitators of quitting, such as social support, change in environment, and finding healthier ways to manage stress. Conclusions: This qualitative work provides an in-depth look into factors that may be helpful in the development of prevention and intervention programs for both e-cigarette and combustible cigarette use in young individuals.

Objectives Only a few studies have solely investigated the health impacts of electronic cigarettes on diabetes while considering the impact of conventional cigarettes. Methods Data were obtained from the 2021 and 2022 Korean Community Health Surveys of 460,603 Korean adults. The main independent variable was smoking behavior. Participants were categorized according to their smoking behavior, as dual smokers, electronic cigarette smokers, conventional cigarette smokers, and non-smokers. The dependent variable, the presence of diabetes, was defined by a doctor's diagnosis. Multiple logistic regression analysis was performed to examine the association between smoking behavior and diabetes. Subgroup analyses were also performed to investigate the associations among different socio-economic groups. Results Conventional cigarette smokers had a higher risk of diabetes than did non-smokers (odds ratio [OR] = 1.22, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.19-1.26). More importantly, those who only vaped electronic cigarettes were at high risk of diabetes (OR = 1.15, 95% CI = 1.01-1.32). Lastly, dual smokers had the highest OR for diabetes among other smoking behavior groups (OR = 1.39, 95% CI = 1.22-1.58). Dual smoking was associated with the highest risk of diabetes in most subgroups. Conclusion This study suggests that conventional cigarette use and smoking electronic cigarettes negatively impact diabetes, and using both types leads to worse health outcomes. Therefore, cessation of all types of smoking is necessary for a healthy life.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) use in Australia has rapidly increased since the 2017 National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) Chief Executive Officer (CEO) statement on e-cigarettes. The type of products available and the demographic characteristics of people using these products have changed. New evidence has been published and there is growing concern among public health professionals about the increased use, particularly among young people who do not currently smoke combustible cigarettes. The combination of these issues led NHMRC to review the current evidence and provide an updated statement on e-cigarettes. In this article, we describe the comprehensive process used to review the evidence and develop the 2022 NHMRC CEO statement on electronic cigarettes. MAIN RECOMMENDATIONS E-cigarettes can be harmful; all e-cigarette users are exposed to chemicals and toxins that have the potential to cause adverse health effects. There are no health benefits of using e-cigarettes if you do not currently smoke tobacco cigarettes. Adolescents are more likely to try e-cigarettes if they are exposed to e-cigarettes on social media. Short term e-cigarette use may help some smokers to quit who have been previously unsuccessful with other smoking cessation aids. There are other proven safe and effective options available to help smokers to quit. CHANGES IN MANAGEMENT AS A RESULT OF THIS STATEMENT The evidence base for the harms of e-cigarette use has strengthened since the previous NHMRC statement. Significant gaps in the evidence base remain, especially about the longer term health harms of using e-cigarettes and the toxicity of many chemicals in e-cigarettes inhaled as an aerosol.

Abstract
The effect of electronic cigarette (E-cig) vaping on cardiac and vascular function during the healing phase of myocardial infarction (MI), and post-MI remodeling was investigated. Sprague Dawley rats were subjected to left coronary artery ligation to induce MI. One week later, rats were randomized to receive either 12 weeks of exposure to purified air (n = 37) or E-cig vapor (15 mg/ml of nicotine) (n = 32). At 12 weeks, cardiac and vascular function, and post-MI remodeling were assessed. Baseline blood flow in the femoral artery did not differ between groups, but peak reperfusion blood flow was blunted in the E-cig group (1.59 ± 0.15 ml/min) vs. the air group (2.11 ± 0.18 ml/min; p = 0.034). Femoral artery diameter after reperfusion was narrower in the E-cig group (0.54 ± 0.02 mm) compared to the air group (0.60 ± 0.02 mm; p = 0.023). Postmortem left ventricular (LV) volumes were similar in the E-cig (0.69 ± 0.04 ml) and air groups (0.73 ± 0.04 ml; p = NS); and myocardial infarct expansion index did not differ between groups (1.4 ± 0.1 in E-cig group versus 1.3 ± 0.1 in air group; p = NS). LV fractional shortening by echo did not differ between groups at 12 weeks (E-cig at 29 ± 2% and air at 27 ± 1%; p = NS). Exposure to E-cig during the healing phase of MI was associated with altered vascular function with reduced femoral artery blood flow and diameter at reperfusion, but not with worsened LV dilation or worsened cardiac function.

Abstract
E-cigarettes are harmful, addictive, and popular. In e-cigarettes, nicotine is often paired with food-flavors. How this pairing of nicotine and food cues influences neural processing warrants investigation, as in smokers, both types of cues activate similar brain regions. Additionally, while most e-cigarettes are sweet, savory e-cigarettes are seemingly absent, although savory flavors are commonly liked in food. To understand how smoking status and type of flavor modulate reactions to food-flavored e-cigarettes, in comparison to actual food, neural and subjective responses to food odors were measured in a 2 (sweet vs. savory odor) x2 (food vs. e-cigarette context) x2 (smokers vs. non-smokers) design in 22 occasional/light smokers and 25 non-smokers. During fMRI scanning, participants were exposed to sweet and savory odors and pictures creating the two contexts. Liking and wanting were repeatedly measured on a 100-unit visual-analogue-scale. Results show that sweet e-cigarettes were liked (Δ = 14.2 ± 1.7) and wanted (Δ = 39.5 ± 3.1) more than savory e-cigarettes, and their cues activated the anterior cingulate more (cluster-level qFDR = 0.003). Further, we observed context-dependent variations in insula response to odors (cluster-level qFDR = 0.023, and = 0.030). Savory odors in an e-cigarette context were wanted less than the same odors in a food-context (Δ = 32.8 ± 3.1). Smokers and non-smokers reacted similarly to flavored product cues. Our results indicate that the principles of flavor preference in food cannot directly be applied to e-cigarettes and that it is challenging to design sweet and savory e-cigarettes to appeal to smokers only.

Abstract
Little research has examined the new onset of cigarette and Electronic Nicotine Delivery System (ENDS) dependence symptoms among young adults. This study aims to 1) examine new onset cigarette and ENDS dependence symptoms over a 4.5-year period and 2) examine how depressive symptoms impact new onset dependence symptoms among young adults. Participants were drawn from 24 colleges in Texas who were participating in a multi-wave cohort study (2014-2019). The present study included 4536 participants aged 18-25 who did not report cigarette or ENDS dependence symptoms at wave 1 (64.1% female; 65.2% non-white; m age = 20.62 [SD = 1.80] at wave 1). Cox's regression models were employed to determine the hazard of new onset cigarette and ENDS dependence symptoms overall and the impact of depressive symptoms. Models controlled for sociodemographic factors and other tobacco product use. 14.4% of participants reported new onset cigarette dependence symptoms and 14.6% reported new onset ENDS dependence symptoms over the 4.5 years of the study. Depressive symptoms significantly predicted increased risk for new onset cigarette (HR = 1.30, CI = [1.21, 1.39]) and ENDS (HR = 1.20, CI = [1.12, 1.29]) dependence symptoms. Young adults exhibited dependence symptoms for cigarettes and ENDS products at similar rates across the 4.5 years of the study. Elevated depressive symptoms increased risk of new onset cigarette and ENDS dependence symptoms, advancing evidence for the self-medication hypothesis. Tobacco and nicotine prevention and cessation programs and messaging are needed particularly among young adults who experience depressive symptoms.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Knowledge about the consequences of electronic cigarette (EC) use on respiratory health is still limited. We aimed to assess whether EC use is associated with the occurrence of asthma symptoms and chronic bronchitis among the French adult population, with a specific focus on never combustible cigarettes (CC) smokers. We further investigated whether the association differed in men and women. METHODS Constances is a population-based cohort of adults aged 18-69 years at inception. We analyzed baseline data collected in 136,276 participants recruited in 2015-2019. Associations of current and former EC use with respiratory symptoms (asthma symptom score and chronic bronchitis) were assessed, controlling for CC smoking, cannabis use, demographics, education and body mass index (BMI). RESULTS Increased frequencies of respiratory symptoms were observed in both current and former EC users (for the asthma symptom score, adjusted mean score ratio (aMSR): 1.34 [95 % confidence interval: 1.28-1.41] and 1.39 [1.33-1.45], respectively; for chronic bronchitis, adjusted prevalence ratio (aPR): 1.27 [1.19-1.36] and 1.40 [1.32-1.48], respectively). Among never CC smokers, ever EC use was associated with an increased asthma symptom score in both men and women (aMSR = 1.44 [1.09-1.90] and 1.36 [1.01-1.83], respectively), and with a higher prevalence of chronic bronchitis only in women (aPR = 1.97 [1.27-3.05]). CONCLUSION EC use is associated with symptoms of asthma and chronic bronchitis, independently of CC smoking and cannabis use. The fact that these associations are observed among individuals who have never smoked tobacco adds further evidence of the deleterious effects of EC on respiratory health.

Abstract
Introduction The popularity of cannabis vaping has increased rapidly, especially among adolescents and young adults. We posit some possible explanations and, to evaluate them, examine whether cannabis vapers differ from non-vaping cannabis users in other substance use. Methods Using nationally representative data from the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH) Study wave 5 (Dec. 2018-Nov. 2019), we assessed the association between cannabis vaping and other substance use. A total of 1,689 adolescents and 10,620 adults who reported cannabis use in the past 12 months were included in the study. We employed multivariable logistic regressions to assess the association between cannabis vaping and other substance use. Results Among past 12-month cannabis users, compared with those who do not vape cannabis, participants who vape cannabis had higher risks of using alcohol (adjusted relative risk [aRR] = 1.04, 95 % CI, 1.01-1.07), cigarettes (aRR = 1.09, 95 % CI, 1.02-1.15), cigars (aRR = 1.17, 95 % CI, 1.06-1.30), other tobacco products (aRR = 1.29, 95 % CI, 1.14-1.45), electronic nicotine products (aRR = 4.64, 95 % CI, 4.32-4.99), other illicit drugs (aRR = 1.53, 95 % CI, 1.29-1.80), and misuse of prescription drugs (aRR = 1.43, 95 % CI, 1.19-1.72). Compared to older cannabis vapers, younger cannabis vapers were at risk of using more other substances. Cannabis vaping was associated with all seven measures of substance use among young adults. Conclusions Compared to non-vaping cannabis users, cannabis vapers have higher likelihood of using other substances. Research is needed to understand why, as well as the implications of the association.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The popularity of e-cigarettes has risen dramatically over the last few years, particularly among the younger population. Although the use of combustible cigarettes has established evidence to be associated with the development of several adverse cardiopulmonary diseases, the investigations regarding the prospective long-term effects of e-cigarette use on the cardiovascular system have just begun. We set to investigate if there is an association between the history of MI and e-cigarette use among smokers and non-smokers? METHODS The current review aims to assess the association of myocardial infarction with e-cigarette consumption. PubMed, Google Scholar, and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL) were queried up to October 2022 to identify articles assessing the incidence of myocardial infarction among e-cigarette users. Data were meta-analyzed using a random-effects model to derive odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals. RESULTS Nine studies involving 984,764 patients were included. The mean age of e-cigarette smokers was less than the controls, and female participants dominated the sample size. E-cigarette users were associated with increased odds of MI than non-users [OR = 1.44; 95% CI (1.22, 1.74); P < 0.0001]. Dual users were also associated with increased odds of MI with large effect when compared to non-users [OR = 4.04; 95% CI (3.40, 4.81); P < 0.00001]. CONCLUSIONS Dual use is associated with an increased risk of MI than e-cigarette use only. Similarly, dual and solely e-cigarette consumption patterns of nicotine delivery are at a higher risk of MI than non-smokers.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The effect of smoke-free spaces on the use of electronic cigarettes has not been empirically demonstrated. The objective of this systematic review was to evaluate the influence of smoke-free and vape policies on the use of electronic cigarettes in young adults and adults. METHODS A systematic review was carried out according to PRISMA criteria in the Web of Science, PubMed and SCOPUS databases. Keywords used were: Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems, Smoke-Free Policy, Young Adult and Adult. We included studies that analyzed the use of electronic cigarettes in smoke-free spaces in adults aged fifteen years and older. The search was conducted from January 2010 to March 2022. Risk of bias was analyzed with the Mixed Methods Assessment Tool. RESULTS The search identified 861 records. A total of 840 records were excluded because they did not meet the inclusion criteria. The final sample included ten studies on smoke-free spaces, six studies on vape-free spaces and five studies on smoke-free spaces and vape-free spaces. The main risk of bias in the studies was the sampling and measurements used. Most studies associate the use of electronic cigarettes and smoke-free spaces. CONCLUSIONS Studies suggest that the use of electronic cigarettes and smoke-free spaces and vape are associated. Studies with higher quality of evidence and simultaneous implementation of smoke-free and vape-free spaces are required.

Abstract
Electronic cigarette (ECIG) use continues to be highly prevalent, especially among youth and young adults. Potential exposure from secondhand ECIG particulate matter (PM) places bystanders in danger of inhaling harmful substances, especially in confined spaces. This study was conducted to measure the potential exposure from secondhand ECIG PM exposure in vehicles, with participants completing a 30-min ECIG use session in their own vehicle with their preferred ECIG device. Sessions included a 5-min, 10-puff directed bout (30-s interpuff interval), followed by a 25-min ad libitum bout in which participants could take as many puffs as desired. Real-time PM1, PM2.5, and PM10 (the 50% efficiency mass cut-off of that passes through a size-selective inlet at 1 μm, 2.5 μm, and 10 μm aerodynamic diameters, respectively) measurements were captured during the sessions using portable PM monitors (MiniWRAS, pDR, SidePak, and GeoAir2 low-cost monitors). A total of 56 participants with valid measurements were included in the study, with a total of 13 unique ECIG device brands, including Vuse Alto, Box Air Bar, ElfBar, Esco Bar, Aegis Legend, Hyde Edge, JUUL, Kang Onee Stick, Kang Onee Stick Plus, Nord X, Nord 2, Nord 3, and Vaporesso. During the 5-min directed bout, the highest real-time PM2.5 mean concentrations were 175 μg/m3 for the MiniWRAS, 1050 μg/m3 for pDR and 3314 μg/m3 for SidePak. The filter measurements were not detectable in most experiments, except for two participants, with one taking 205 puffs and the other taking 285 puffs, approximately 10 times the mean (30) puffs of all participants. The evaluation of GeoAir2 with the MiniWRAS showed a wide range of Pearson correlation coefficient (r) values, ranging from -0.03 to 1.00, for the 13 ECIG brands. The mass median diameter (0.31 μm-3.42 μm) and geometric standard deviation (2.47-8.21) were different based on the participants for the same ECIG brand.

Abstract
BACKGROUND E-cigarettes (electronic nicotine delivery system, ENDS) have been presented as a harm reduction strategy for people who smoke tobacco cigarettes but who cannot achieve abstinence, or for those who wish to continue to enjoy nicotine and the habit of smoking. What are the health effects of the substitution of ENDS for tobacco cigarettes? This systematic review evaluates the evidence of human clinical tests on the respiratory effects of ENDS use in participants who smoke tobacco cigarettes. METHODS A registered and published protocol was developed conforming to PRISMA 2020 and AMSTAR2 standards. The literature search was conducted in PubMed, Scopus, and the CENTRAL Cochrane Library and updated to May 2022. Three supplementary searches and a grey literature search were performed. Studies were evaluated with the JBI quality tools and the Oxford Catalogue of Bias. Due to the heterogeneity (diversity) of the studies, a narrative data synthesis was performed on the test findings plus three sub-group analyses. RESULTS The review consists of sixteen studies and twenty publications. Spirometry tests comprised the majority of the data. In total, 66 respiratory test measurements were reported, out of which 43 (65%) were not significant. Statistically significant findings were mixed, with 9 tests showing improvements and 14 measuring declines, none of which was clinically relevant. Ten studies were rated at a high risk of bias, and six had some concerns primarily due to inadequate research designs and the conduct of the studies. Reporting bias was documented in thirteen studies. CONCLUSIONS Most of the studies showed no difference in respiratory parameters. This indicates that ENDS substitution for smoking likely does not result in additional harm to respiratory health. Due to the low quality of the studies, confidence in the conclusions is rated as low. Robust studies with a longer duration and sufficient power are required to validate any potential benefits or possible harms of ENDS substitution. Abstract
PURPOSE Electronic cigarette (e-cig) use is prevalent. The health implications of e-cig use on the genitourinary (GU) system are uncertain. This systematic review aims to evaluate how e-cig use impacts the GU system. METHODS A systematic search was conducted in PubMed, Embase and Ovid alongside citation searching. Review articles, non-English papers, animal model/cell line studies or articles only on combustible cigarettes were excluded. Quality assessment was undertaken using the Joanna Briggs Institute checklists. The primary endpoint was the impact of e-cig use on bladder cancer incidence. Secondary outcomes included urinary carcinogens, chronic kidney disease (CKD), reproductive disorders, and other GU diseases. RESULTS The search yielded 244 articles, 28 were ultimately included. One study assessed risk of bladder cancer and found the use of e-cig was associated with an increased odds ratio of 1.577 for its diagnosis. Twenty-one articles measured potential urinary carcinogens-including crotonaldehyde and benzene-associated with bladder cancer. Two articles evaluated the association of e-cig use with CKD and reported mixed outcomes. Three articles reported on reproductive disorders, specifically, stuttering priapism and changes to sperm quantity and quality. One study reported on other GU diseases, specifically burns to the GU system. After quality assessment, all articles were deemed to be of acceptable quality for inclusion. CONCLUSIONS E-cig use was associated with an increased risk of bladder cancer, increased exposure to carcinogenic compounds, mixed evidence on CKD, increased risk of reproductive disorders and burns to the GU system. Further studies are needed to understand long-term GU effects.

Abstract
E-cigarette use in young individuals may increase risk for cigarette smoking initiation. Over half of young adults who use e-cigarettes voiced their desire to quit e-cigarettes. Mobile-based interventions may allow for an easy-to-use platform to engage young adults in cessation services and reduce risk for cigarette uptake. To inform development of such programs, this study sought to gather information about what young adults want to see included in e-cigarette cessation interventions that also target future smoking risk. Nine online focus groups (n = 33) were conducted in July and August 2022 with young adults who either (1) currently used e-cigarettes, (2) formerly used e-cigarettes, or (3) initiated nicotine use with e-cigarettes but subsequently smoked cigarettes (dual use). Two research team members independently coded the transcripts and identified themes. A third researcher independently reviewed the coding and thematic analysis. Participants believed that mobile-based interventions should include peer support, ways to track cessation progress, education about the harms of e-cigarettes, gamification, and incentivization. They also believed that to prevent future cigarette smoking, interventions need to include education about the harms of smoking, teach refusal skills for offers to smoke, and incorporate personal anecdotes from former smokers. To increase their readiness, motivation, and self-efficacy to quit, participants who continue to use e-cigarettes reported needing effective substitutions to replace e-cigarettes, barriers to hinder their access to e-cigarettes, and social support. Findings from this study may be useful to incorporate when developing interventions designed to reduce e-cigarette use and risk of progression to smoking for young adults.

Abstract
BACKGROUND E-cigarette use, or vaping, is an alternative nicotine delivery system that is becoming increasingly prevalent in adolescents and young adults. There is currently a lack of comprehensive research on the adverse effects of vaping on the upper airway. Acute epiglottitis is a potentially life-threatening condition that can lead to airway obstruction. It is commonly caused by bacterial infections such as streptococci, staphylococcus, and Moraxella. Adult patients with acute epiglottitis mainly present with odynophagia, dysphagia, and respiratory difficulties. The diagnosis of epiglottitis is made by direct laryngoscopy, and the mainstay of treatment is antibiotics. Bozella et al. (2020) reported a case of subacute non-infectious epiglottitis associated with e-cigarette use in a pediatric patient (Pediatrics 145(3), 2020). Here we present a case of acute epiglottitis in a healthy young adult after vaping, with a negative infectious workup. To our knowledge, there has been no such reported case of epiglottitis associated with e-cigarette use in an adult patient. CASE DESCRIPTION A previously healthy 29-year-old male with daily e-cigarette use presented to the emergency department with a severe sore throat, dysphagia, mild hoarseness, and shortness of breath, especially when lying supine. A lateral neck soft tissue radiograph revealed a thickened epiglottis with a thumb sign. Direct bedside laryngoscopy showed a swollen epiglottis, partially obstructing the supraglottic region confirming the diagnosis of acute epiglottitis. Throat and nasal swabs were negative for streptococcus and COVID-19 infection, respectively. The patient's condition improved significantly after receiving intravenous Dexamethasone and antibiotics for 2 days. Repeat laryngoscopy showed the resolution of epiglottis swelling, and subjective symptoms had resolved entirely 2 weeks following the start of the treatment. CONCLUSIONS Although bacterial infections usually cause acute epiglottitis, this case presents the second report of this condition associated with vaping with negative microbiological investigations. Therefore, we recommend that physicians consider non-infectious causes such as vaping in their differential diagnosis for patients with acute and subacute epiglottitis. More research is warranted on the utility of antibiotics in treating vaping-induced epiglottitis.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This systematic review and meta-analysis examined the effects of electronic cigarettes on periodontal health compared to conventional cigarette smoke and a non-smoking population. MATERIALS AND METHODS MEDLINE, Embase, Web of Science, CENTRAL, and ClinicalTrials.gov were screened for literature. Eligibility criteria included clinical studies published between 2006 and 2022 that compare e-cigarettes and conventional cigarettes on periodontal health (bleeding on probing (BoP), plaque index (PI), probing depth (PD), attachment loss (AL), marginal bone loss (MBL), tooth loss, molecular inflammation markers, salivary flow rate). Meta-regression analysis was used to examine the influence of moderator variables. RESULTS Sixteen studies were found to be eligible for qualitative synthesis. Individual analyses showed that cigarette smokers had significantly higher PI, PD, AL, and MBL and increased concentrations of proinflammatory mediators than e-cigarette users and non-smokers. Meta-analysis revealed a 0.33-fold lower chance for BoP in e-cigarette users compared to smokers (p = 0.03), whereby meta-regression failed to detect any effects regarding the age of users and frequency of smoking. A 0.01-fold decreased chance for positive BoP in e-cigarette users compared with non-smokers was seen (p < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS The current findings suggest that that e-cigarette use might be considered a healthier alternative to cigarette smoking concerning periodontal health. Even so, harmful effects of electronic nicotine delivery system (ENDS) usage on periodontal health were seen as well. However, a definitive decision on this research question remains elusive due to the absence of randomized controlled trials. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Electronic cigarettes, marketed as a safer alternative to traditional cigarettes, are becoming increasingly popular. Evidence on the use of electronic cigarettes as a cessation aid and its beneficial impact compared to cigarette smoke remains inconclusive, so the analysis conducted in this review addresses a recent question of high clinical relevance.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Electronic cigarette (ECIG) use in vehicles represents a public health concern due to the potential for exposure to high concentrations of particulate matter (PM) and other toxicants. This study examined the impact of ECIG use on air quality in vehicles. METHODS People who reported current ECIG use (n=60; mean age=20.5, SD=2.3) completed a brief survey and a 30-min ECIG use session in their own vehicle. Using a protocol similar to clinical laboratory studies involving tobacco use, participants took 10 directed puffs (i.e., a directed bout with one puff every 30s for 5min) followed by a 25-min ad libitum period in which participants took as many puffs as desired. PM 2.5µm in diameter or smaller (PM2.5) were measured using aerosol monitors set up to sample air from the breathing zone of the passenger seat and total puffs were recorded. The association between peak PM2.5 concentration and puff count was examined. RESULTS Participants took a median 18 total puffs during the sessions. Median PM2.5 concentrations increased from 4.78µg/m3 at baseline to 107.40µg/m3 after the directed bout. Median peak PM2.5 concentration was 464.48µg/m3 and ranged from 9.56µg/m3 to 143,503.91µg/m3 (IQR=132.72-1604.68). After removing two extreme outliers for puff count and PM2.5 concentrations, puff count was significantly correlated with peak PM2.5 concentration during the ad libitum bout (r=0.32, p=0.015). CONCLUSIONS ECIG use in vehicles impacts air quality negatively and may pose health risks to those present in vehicles when ECIG use is occurring.

Abstract
PURPOSE United States Smokeless Tobacco Company LLC submitted a modified risk tobacco product application to the US Food and Drug Administration, proposing a claim that switching to Copenhagen snuff fine cut from cigarettes reduces lung cancer risk. This claim could affect adolescents' smokeless tobacco perceptions and its use. METHODS Students (N = 592; mean age: 15.3 years; 46% male; 32% nonHispanic White; 8% smokeless tobacco ever-users) at seven California high schools were randomized within a survey to view a Copenhagen snuff image, either with or without the proposed reduced risk claim. Participants were then asked about the harm of smokeless tobacco and their willingness to try Copenhagen snuff if a friend offered. Postimage harm rating and willingness were compared between image groups overall, stratified by past 30-day tobacco use (87% of tobacco users were e-cigarette users), and adjusted for participant characteristics using multivariable regression. RESULTS Participants who viewed the claim were less likely to perceive smokeless tobacco to cause "a lot" of harm (56% vs. 64%; p = .03), including after statistical adjustment (risk ratio [RR]: 0.84; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.75, 0.94), and with a numerically stronger effect among tobacco users (RR: 0.65; 95% CI: 0.48, 0.86). The claim did not increase willingness overall (17% vs. 20%; p = .41) but did increase willingness among tobacco users (RR: 1.67; 95% CI: 1.05, 2.67). DISCUSSION Brief exposure to a reduced-risk claim decreased adolescents' smokeless tobacco harm perceptions and increased willingness to try among tobacco users. The Food and Drug Administration order permitting this claim could increase some adolescents' susceptibility to smokeless tobacco, particularly those already using other tobacco products like e-cigarettes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Electronic cigarette use has surged internationally in recent years, with numerous countries noting an uptick in users. Despite this, the portrayal of e-cigarette usage in African news remains unclear. METHODS This research investigates the subject, employing a mixed-methodology approach. The study units were news articles on electronic cigarette use retrieved from AllAfrica, an online African news archive. A total of 38 online news and opinion articles published between June 2017 and June 2022 qualified the exclusion and inclusion criteria. A content analysis revealed prevalent codes and themes, while a thematic analysis explored the association between news sources and framing. RESULTS The results indicate that articles and arguments presenting e-cigarettes positively outnumber those with a negative slant. The health impacts of electronic cigarettes emerged as the most discussed topic, with health authorities frequently cited as news sources. However, these health authorities often lacked a unified stance on e-cigarette safety. CONCLUSION The lack of consensus among health officials could have public health consequences, possibly resulting in the formulation of uninformed policies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Nicotine dependence, factors associated with dependence, and self-reported side effects among people who use e-cigarettes are scarce in developing countries. METHODS A sample of 302 persons who currently use e-cigarettes was recruited from discussion forums on Reddit, Facebook, and the forum 'lowyat'. The online Google form survey collected data on demographics, e-cigarette use, and the reasons, for cigarette smoking, Fagerstorm Test for Nicotine Dependence adapted for e-cigarettes (eFTND), and side effects experienced. RESULTS The mean age was 25.5 years (6.5), 60.6% were males and 86% had higher education. About 47% were using e-cigarettes only, 27.8% were currently using dual products (both electronic and conventional cigarettes), and 25.2% had also smoked cigarettes in the past. 'Less harmful than cigarettes' (56.3%), 'because I enjoy it' (46.7%), and 'it has a variety of flavors (40.4%) were the common reasons for e-cigarette use. The mean eFTND score was 3.9 (SD = 2.2), with a median of four side effects (IQR 3-6), sore or dry mouth/throat (41.4%), cough 33.4%, headache (20.5%), dizziness (16.2%) were commonly reported side effects. eFTND score and side effects were higher among persons using dual products. By multiple linear regression analysis, males (β = 0.56 95% CI 0.45, 1.05, p = 0.033), dual-use (β = 0.95 95% CI 0.34, 1.56, p < 0.003), and use of nicotine-containing e-cigarettes (β = 0.66 95% CI 0.07, 1.25 p = 0.024) had higher eFTND score. CONCLUSION Our findings of the study call for the placement of disclaimers about possible nicotine addiction and side effects of e-cigarette products.

Abstract
Electronic cigarette use (vaping) has reached epidemic levels in the United States among teenagers and young adults. However, there is a paucity of studies that have examined the relationships between e-cigarette device types and user characteristics. Therefore, the main objective of this study was to characterize e-cigarette device use among a college population with a focus on sex differences in preferred vaping device. We employed a Qualtrics-based smartphone/online survey to gather responses on e-cigarette use; including device type, demographics and other related information during the period October 1, 2020 to January 30, 2022 in the Birmingham, AL metropolitan area. Participants were recruited via flyers with a QR code to the survey. The differences in e-cigarette device type used by the characteristics of the university e-cigarette users were assessed using either a Chi-square analysis or Fisher's Test. The magnitude of any association between the characteristics of the participants and vaping device used was analyzed via logistic regression. Out of 394 students who participated in the survey, 61 reported current exclusive e-cigarette use (15.5%) among our 18-24-year-old college student sample. Among vapers; more females reported use of Disposable e-cigarettes or Juul (pod-type) as their primary vaping device compared to males, who preferred Tanks and Mods + other rechargeable e-cigarettes (p < 0.05). Males also vaped more days per week compared to females. Vaping among young college students remains at concerning levels. The primary vaping device used significantly varies by the users' sex, making it an important factor to consider in future studies.

Abstract
Electronic cigarette (EC) aerosol emissions generally contain fewer and lower concentrations of harmful and potentially harmful constituents, compared with cigarette smoke. Further studies are needed to establish whether decreased emissions translate to reduced health risks for EC users. In a cross-sectional study, biomarkers of exposure (BoE) to certain tobacco smoke toxicants and biomarkers of potential harm (BoPH), associated with biological processes linked to the potential development of smoking-related diseases and oxidative stress, were assessed in solus Vuse ECs users and current, former, and never smokers. In total, 213 participants were enrolled, and smoking status was confirmed by urinary cotinine, exhaled carbon monoxide, and N-(2-cyanoethyl)valine levels (EC users and former smokers only). During confinement participants used their usual product (EC or cigarette) as normal and BoE and BoPHs were assessed via blood, 24-h urine, and physiological assessment. Significantly lower levels of all urinary BoE; MHBMA, HMPMA, 3-HPMA, NNN, 3-OH-B[a]P, S-PMA, NNAL (all p < 0.0001), and TNeq (p = 0.0074) were observed in EC users when compared with smokers. Moreover, significantly lower levels were observed in EC users for 3 of the 7 BoPH measured, carboxyhaemoglobin (p < 0.0001), soluble intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (p = 0.0028), and 11-dehydrothromboxane B2 (p = 0.0012), when compared with smokers. As compared with smokers, solus Vuse EC users have significantly lower exposure to tobacco toxicants for the BoE, and 3 BoPH measured. These results add to the weight of evidence supporting EC as part of a tobacco harm reduction strategy.

Abstract
The increasing co-use of e-cigarette and cannabis among youth has become a public health challenge. The present analyses aimed to identify prevalence and correlates of past-month co-use of e-cigarettes and cannabis among adolescents with and without prior tobacco use. For this panel study, 5 years of cross-sectional data (2014-2018) were used from 8th, 10th-, and 12th-grade adolescents in the Monitoring the Future study, a nationally representative survey of U.S. students. We examined prevalence and correlates of e-cigarettes and cannabis co-use among adolescents who had ever used tobacco (n = 15,136) and among those who had never used tobacco (n = 56,525). Adolescents who had ever used tobacco showed significantly higher rates of e-cigarettes and cannabis co-use compared to adolescents who had never used tobacco (17.1% vs. 2.2%, p < 0.01). Results from adjusted multinomial regression models showed that overall, Black and Hispanic adolescents tobacco users were less likely than Whites to co-use e-cigarettes and cannabis. Black adolescents who had used tobacco previously were more likely than Whites to have used cannabis exclusively. Black and Hispanic tobacco-naïve adolescents were more likely than Whites to have used cannabis exclusively, while Black tobacco-naïve adolescents were less likely to use e-cigarettes exclusively or co-use e-cigarettes and cannabis. Overall, males and twelve graders were more likely than males and eight graders to use or co-use cannabis or e-cigarettes, respectively. Among lifetime tobacco users, higher levels of parental education were associated with co-use of cannabis and e-cigarettes. Racial/ethnic-specific patterns of e-cigarette and cannabis co-use depends on adolescents' prior experience with tobacco. The higher rates of use and co-use of e-cigarettes and cannabis among prior tobacco users suggest that targeted interventions are needed for this group. Identified socio-demographic groups at higher risk of co-use of e-cigarettes and cannabis need to be further studied.

Abstract
We aimed to examine how bidirectional relationships between mental health problems and tobacco use are formed over time by types of tobacco use in recent samples of U.S. youth. Data were drawn from Waves 1-4 of the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health Study (N = 10,082) and analyzed using cross-lagged panel models. A high level of internalizing problems at Wave 1 predicted conventional cigarette smoking (adjusted odds ratio [AOR] = 1.19, 95% CI = 1.06-1.34) and e-cigarette use (AOR = 1.25, 95% CI = 1.09-1.43) at Wave 2, but not vice versa. Both cigarette smoking and e-cigarette use at Wave 2 tended to persist into Wave 3, which, in turn, increased the risk of subsequent internalizing problems in late adolescence or young adulthood (Wave 4). The bidirectional relationship between tobacco use and internalizing problems seems to begin as a procession from internalizing problems to tobacco use, and then from persistent tobacco use to exacerbated internalizing problems over time.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to present a framework for clinicians to use when discussing electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) use and its association with pre-diabetes. A communication tool was designed using evidence-based strategies from the academic literature. A four-step framework is presented, which includes: step (1) helping patients to understand the association between e-cigarette use and pre-diabetes; step (2) the synergistic health impacts of e-cigarette use and pre-diabetes; step (3) management of diabetes-related lifestyle factors; and step (4) stages of change assessment related to e-cigarette reduction. This communication tool provides support for clinicians to discuss the risk of pre-diabetes associated with e-cigarette use. Moving forward, implementation and evaluation of this model are needed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study assesses use and perceptions of short- and long-term harms associated with cigarettes, e-cigarettes, and smoked marijuana among adolescents and young adults (AYAs) with cystic fibrosis (CF). METHODS A total of 205 AYAs with CF completed an online survey querying about use, safety perceptions, and education related to traditional cigarettes, electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes), and smoked marijuana. In addition, parents of AYAs with CF and CF healthcare providers were asked questions about experiences in avoidance education. RESULTS AYA participants with CF reported using tobacco and marijuana at rates lower than that of the general AYA population, with heavy use considerably lower in this population. AYAs with CF perceived lower risk of negative outcomes associated with using e-cigarettes and smoked marijuana compared to combustible cigarettes. Ever-use was correlated with a lower perception of risk across all products. CF providers estimated lower rates of product use in their own patients compared to both the general AYA CF population and the general AYA population, and estimated lower use among the general CF AYA population compared to the general AYA population. Receipt of avoidance education varied greatly when comparing AYAs with CF, parents of individuals with CF, and CF healthcare providers. Reasons for undereducation include but are not limited to lack of familiarity with products, assumption of avoidance, assumption of education, and time constraints. CONCLUSIONS Findings concerning safety perceptions and use of combustible tobacco, e-cigarettes, and marijuana in individuals with cystic fibrosis underscore the importance of providing avoidance education to vulnerable patient populations. Insight derived from this study may also inform pediatric to adult clinic transition education, when chronic disease populations are at greatest risk for engaging in risky behaviors. IMPLICATIONS AND CONTRIBUTION We report data on use, risk perception, and education of cigarettes, electronic cigarettes, and cannabis in individuals with cystic fibrosis, with a focus on adolescents and young adults. Such Findings will inform prevention education, especially during the critical transition period from pediatric to adult care when these behaviors are prevalent.

Abstract
PURPOSE The current study assessed the association between cannabis use among youth never e-cigarette users and subsequent e-cigarette use. METHODS The Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health Study is a nationally representative cohort study. Participants aged 12 years and older were selected using a 4-stage, stratified probability sample design from the US civilian, noninstitutionalized population. We included adolescents who participated in both wave 4.5 (2017-2018) and wave 5 (2018-2019) of Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health, and were never e-cigarette users at baseline (N = 9,925). Through multivariable logistic regressions, we examined the prospective association between cannabis use and subsequent e-cigarette use. RESULTS E-cigarette use at wave five was significantly more common among youth cannabis users at wave 4.5. The adjusted relative risks between ever cannabis use and subsequent past 12-month, past 30-day, and frequent e-cigarette use (≥20 days per month) were 1.53 (95% CI, 1.26-1.81), 1.70 (95% CI, 1.25-2.15), and 2.10 (95% CI, 1.17-3.03), respectively. The adjusted relative risks between past 30-day cannabis use and subsequent past 12-month, past 30-day, and frequent e-cigarette use were 1.54 (95% CI, 1.04-2.28), 2.01 (95% CI, 1.23-3.29), and 2.87 (95% CI, 1.44-5.71), respectively. We also found significant associations between ever cannabis vaping with subsequent e-cigarette use. DISCUSSION While previous research associates e-cigarette use with subsequent onset of cannabis use, we identify a reverse directional effect, where adolescent cannabis use is associated with increased likelihood of future e-cigarette use.

Abstract
The use of electronic cigarettes (e-cigs) is rapidly increasing worldwide and is promoted as a smoking cessation tool. The impact of traditional cigs on human health has been well-defined in both animal and human studies. In contrast, little is known about the adverse effects of e-cigs exposure on human health. This review summarizes the impact of e-cigs exposure on different organ systems based on the rapidly expanding recent evidence from experimental and human studies. A number of growing studies have shown the adverse effects of e-cigs exposure on various organ systems. The summarized data in this review indicate that while e-cigs use causes less adverse effects on different organs compared to traditional cigs, its long-term exposure may lead to serious health effects. Data on short-term organ effects are limited and there is no sufficient evidence on long-term organ effects. Moreover, the adverse effects of secondhand and third hand e-cigs vapour exposure have not been thoroughly investigated in previous studies. Although some studies demonstrated e-cigs used as a smoking cessation tool, there is a lack of strong evidence to support it. While some researchers suggested e-cigs as a safer alternative to tobacco smoking, their long-term exposure health effects remain largely unknown. Therefore, more epidemiological and prospective studies including mechanistic studies are needed to address the potential adverse health effects of e-cigs to draw a firm conclusion about their safe use. A wide variation in e-cigs products and the lack of standardized testing methods are the major barriers to evaluating the existing data. Specific regulatory guidelines for both e-cigs components and the manufacturing process may be effective to protect consumer health.

Abstract
Currently it is not fully understood how the device settings and electronic liquid (e-liquid) composition, including their form of nicotine content, impact mouth and throat losses, and potentially lead to the variations in total nicotine delivery to the human lungs. An in situ size assessment method was developed for real-time measurements at the mouthpiece and outlet of a biorelevant mouth-throat to account for the dynamic nature of the aerosol. The aerosol size, temperature, and delivery through the mouth-throat replica and the exhaled aerosol between the puff intervals were measured at different wattages using various e-liquid compositions. The effects of body temperature and humidity on aerosol size and nicotine delivery were also explored to evaluate the importance of considering realistic in vivo conditions in in vitro measurements. Notably, in vitro tests with body temperature and humidity in mouth-throat model vs room conditions, resulted in larger aerosol size at the end of the throat (Dv50=5.83±0.33 μm vs 3.05±0.15 μm), significantly higher thoracic nicotine delivery (>90% vs 50-85%) potentially due to the lower exhaled amount (<10% vs 15-50%). Besides, higher VG/PG ratios resulted in significantly lower exhaled amount and higher mouth-throat nicotine deposition. One of the main outcomes of the study was finding significantly lower exhaled amount and higher thoracic nicotine delivery with nicotine salt form vs free-base. Considering body temperature and humidity also showed significant enhancement in nicotine delivery, so it is essential to account for biorelevant experimental conditions in benchtop testing.

Abstract
Cigarette butts are one of the most littered single-use plastic items worldwide and can have ecotoxicological effects. e-Cigarettes (or 'vapes') have gained popularity globally as an alternative to tobacco-based cigarettes in recent years. The increased availability of disposable e-cigarettes has resulted in a rise in their littering, presenting a complex form of e-waste in the environment, yet the environmental impacts of littered e-cigarettes are largely unknown. Here Lemna minor (common duckweed) was used as a model organism to understand the effects of smoked cigarettes, vaped e-cigarettes or e-liquid. Growth-related physiological responses were measured (biomass, root development and frond chlorophyll content). After 14 days of exposure to cigarette butts there was an increase of all measured growth variables. On the contrary, exposure to e-cigarettes or e-liquid caused a decrease in root length, biomass and frond number relative to controls. The significant deviations from control conditions suggest that the presence of either cigarette butts, e-cigarettes or e-liquid caused stress to the model plant which could indicate disruption of aquatic ecosystems at the primary producer level. Disposable vapes pose a novel threat to aquatic ecosystems and it would be prudent to prevent them from becoming the next top litter item.

Abstract
The use of electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) persists in Brazil, despite restrictions on sales, imports, and advertising. This study aimed to identify the prevalence of e-cigarette use and user profiles among university students. This cross-sectional study used a convenience sample of 3083 university students (female = 2253, male = 830; M=26.1; SD =8.43) who completed an online survey. We employed logistic regression models and network analysis to determine the profile of e-cigarette users. The prevalence of e-cigarette use in the past year was 12.2% (n =377). Men, single individuals, Caucasians, secular individuals, and non-heterosexual individuals were more likely to engage in e-cigarette use. Intense use of alcohol, tobacco products, and illicit drugs increased the likelihood of e-cigarette use. Brazilian college students continue to use electronic cigarettes despite the prohibition. The pattern of alcohol abuse and tobacco product use among e-cigarette users is concerning. These risky behaviors render young and highly educated individuals targets for public policies to control and regulate electronic cigarettes in the country.

Abstract
RATIONALE Electronic (e)-cigarettes are popular among youth and cigarette smokers attempting to quit. Studies to date have focused on the utility of e-cigarettes as a smoking cessation tool, but the biological effects are largely unknown. OBJECTIVES To identify transcriptomic differences in the blood and sputum of e-cigarette users compared to conventional cigarettes smokers and healthy controls and describe biological pathways affected by these tobacco products. METHODS Cross-sectional analysis of whole blood and sputum RNA-sequencing data from 8 smokers, 9 e-cigarette users (e-cigs) and 4 controls. Weighted gene co-network analysis (WGCNA) identified gene module associations. Ingenuity Pathway Analysis (IPA) identified canonical pathways associated with tobacco products. MAIN RESULTS In blood, a three-group comparison showed 16 differentially expressed genes (DEGs); pair-wise comparison showed 7 DEGs between e-cigs and controls, 35 DEGs between smokers and controls, and 13 DEGs between smokers and e-cigs. In sputum, 438 DEGs were in the three-group comparison. In pair-wise comparisons, there were 2 DEGs between e-cigs and controls, 270 DEGs between smokers and controls, and 468 DEGs between smokers and e-cigs. Only 2 genes in the smokers vs. control comparison overlapped between blood and sputum. Most gene modules identified through WGCNA associated with tobacco product exposures also were associated with cotinine and exhaled CO levels. IPA showed more canonical pathways altered by conventional cigarette smoking than by e-cigarette use. CONCLUSION Cigarette smoking and e-cigarette use led to transcriptomic changes in both blood and sputum. However, conventional cigarettes induced much stronger transcriptomic responses in both compartments.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Patterns of utilization of numerous smoking cessation methods among pregnant women amidst the increasing popularity of vaping (use of e-cigarettes) remains unknown. METHODS This study included 3,154 mothers who self-reported smoking around the time of conception and delivered live births in 2016-2018 in seven US states. Latent class analysis was used to identify subgroups of smoking women based on their utilization of 10 surveyed quitting methods and vaping during pregnancy. RESULTS We identified four subgroups of smoking mothers with different utilization patterns of quitting methods during pregnancy: 22.0% reported "not trying to quit"; 61.4% tried to "quit on my own" without any behavioral or pharmacological assistance; 3.7% belonged to the "vaping" subgroup; and 12.9% utilized "wide-ranging methods" with higher use rate of multiple approaches, such as quit line and nicotine patch. Compared to mothers "not trying to quit," the subgroup trying to "quit on my own" were more likely to be abstinent (adjusted OR 4.95, 95% CI 2.82-8.35) or to reduce the number of cigarettes smoked daily (adjusted OR 2.46, 95% CI 1.31-4.60) in late pregnancy, and these improvements lasted into early postpartum. We did not observe a measurable reduction in smoking among the "vaping" subgroup or women trying to quit with "wide-ranging methods". CONCLUSIONS We identified four subgroups of smoking mothers with different utilization patterns of eleven quitting methods during pregnancy. Pre-pregnancy smokers who tried to "quit on my own" were most likely to be abstinent or to reduce smoking amount.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) are often perceived to be safer than smoking, which has led to some women switching to e-cigarettes during pregnancy. However, the effects of switching from smoking to e-cigarettes on both pregnancy outcomes and the foetus are largely unknown. This study aimed to investigate the effects of switching from tobacco smoking to e-cigarette use in very early pregnancy on birth outcomes, neurodevelopment and behaviour of the offspring. METHODS Female BALB/c mice were exposed to cigarette smoke for up to two weeks before being mated. Mated dams were then allocated to one of four treatment groups: (i) continued exposure to cigarette smoke (ii) exposure to e-cigarette aerosol with nicotine, (iii) or without nicotine, or (iv) medical air. Pregnant mice were exposed for 2 h per day for the duration of pregnancy. Gestational outcomes including litter size and sex ratio were assessed, in addition to early-life markers of physical- and neuro- development. At 8 weeks of age, motor coordination, anxiety, locomotion, memory and learning of the adult offspring were assessed. RESULTS Gestational outcomes and early markers of physical- and neuro- development were unaffected by in utero exposure, as well as locomotion, anxiety-like behaviour, and object recognition memory during adulthood. However, both e-cigarette groups displayed increased spatial recognition memory compared to air exposed controls. Maternal exposure to nicotine containing e-cigarette aerosol was found to increase offspring bodyweight and impair motor skill learning. CONCLUSIONS These results suggest there may be some benefits as well as negative effects of switching to e-cigarettes in early pregnancy.

Abstract
Currently, the marketing of electronic cigarettes as a safe alternative to smoking has increased, which is associated with greater use of these devices, especially among young people and smokers interested in quitting tobacco cigarettes. Given the growing use of this type of product, there is a need to determine the consequences of electronic cigarettes on human health, especially since many of the compounds contained in the aerosol and liquid of these devices have a high potential to be carcinogenic and genotoxic. Additionally, many of these compounds' aerosol concentrations exceed the safe limits. We have evaluated the levels of genotoxicity and changes in DNA methylation patterns associated with vaping. We analyzed a total of 90 peripheral blood samples from a population of vapers (n = 32), smokers (n = 18), and controls (n = 32), in which the frequencies of genotoxicity were determined by the cytokinesis-blocking micronuclei (CBMN) assay and the patterns of methylation of the repetitive elements of LINE-1 through the Quantitative Methylation Specific PCR (qMSP) assay. Here we show an increase in genotoxicity levels associated with vaping habits. Additionally, the group of vapers showed changes at the epigenetic level specifically associated with the loss of methylation of the LINE-1 elements. These changes in LINE-1 methylation patterns were reflected in its representative RNA expression detected in vapers.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Early in the COVID-19 pandemic, reports about a possible protective effect of nicotine on COVID-19 conflicted with messaging by public health organizations about increased risks of COVID-19 due to smoking. The ambiguous information the public received, combined with COVID-19-induced anxiety, may have led to changes in tobacco or other nicotine product use. This study examined changes in use of combustible cigarettes (CCs), nargila (hookah/waterpipe), e-cigarettes, and IQOS and home-smoking behaviors. We also assessed COVID-19 related anxiety and perceptions regarding changes in risk of COVID-19 severity due to smoking. METHODS We used cross-sectional data from a population telephone survey that was conducted in Israel in the early phase of the COVID-19 pandemic (May-June 2020) and included 420 adult (age 18+) individuals who reported having ever used CCs (n = 391), nargila (n = 193), and/or electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes)/heated tobacco products (e.g., IQOS) (n = 52). Respondents were asked about the effect that COVID-19 had on their nicotine product use (quit/reduced use, no change, increased use). We assessed changes in product use, risk perceptions, and anxiety using adjusted multinomial logistic regression analyses. RESULTS Most respondents did not change their frequency of product use (CCs: 81.0%, nargila: 88.2%, e-cigarettes/IQOS: 96.8%). A small percentage either decreased use (CCs: 7.2%, nargila: 3.2%, e-cigarettes/IQOS:2.4%) or increased use (CCs:11.8%, nargila:8.6%, e-cigarettes/IQOS:+ 0.9%). 55.6% of respondents used a product in the home prior to COVID-19; but during the first lockdown COVID-19 period, a greater percentage increased (12.6%) than decreased (4.0%) their home use. Higher levels of anxiety due to COVID-19 were associated with increased home smoking (aOR = 1.59, 95% CI:1.04-2.42, p = 0.02). Many respondents believed that increased severity of COVID-19 illness was associated with CCs (62.0%) and e-cigarettes/vaping (45.3%), with uncertainty about the association being lower for CCs (20.5%) than for vaping (41.3%). CONCLUSIONS While many respondents believed that nicotine product use (particularly CCs and e-cigarettes) was associated with increased risk of COVID-19 disease severity, the majority of users did not change their tobacco/nicotine use. The confusion about the relationship between tobacco use and COVID-19 calls for clear evidence-based messaging from governments. The association between home smoking and increased COVID-19-related stress suggests the need for campaigns and resources to prevent smoking in the home, particularly during times of stress.

Abstract
The potential toxicities and threats of electronic cigarettes (E-cigs) on periodontal health remain elusive. Gingival mesenchymal stem cells (GMSCs) and periodontal ligament stem cells (PDLSCs) contribute to cell differentiation and regeneration for periodontium as well as inflammatory modulation. However, the effects of E-cig exposure on periodontal tissues, particularly GMSCs and PDLSCs, and the underlying epigenetic mechanisms remain largely unknown. In this study, we conducted RNA-seq analysis to examine the transcriptome of human GMSCs and PDLSCs exposed to four types of E-cigs (aerosol and liquid with tobacco and menthol flavor) and conventional tobacco smoke in vitro. Our results showed that E-cig exposure primarily impacted the immunoregulation and inflammatory responses to pathogenic microorganisms in GMSCs, and the microenvironment, differentiation and response to corticosteroid in PDLSCs, which were significantly different from the damage effects caused by tobacco smoke. Additionally, we discovered a large number of differentially expressed non-coding RNAs among the different E-cig exposure methods and flavors. We also noticed that in GMSCs, CXCL2 was especially down-regulated by E-cig aerosol exposure whereas up-regulated by E-liquid exposure compared to control. Of note, the enhancer elements near CXCL2 and other genes located at Chromosome 4 contributed to the transcription activity of these genes, and KDM6B was remarkably elevated in response to E-liquid exposure. Lastly, we conducted ChIP-seq analysis to confirm that the elevated gene transcription by E-liquids was due to the weakened H3K27me3 at genome-wide enhancer elements in GMSCs, but not at promoter regions. Taken together, our results characterized the diverse gene expression profiles of GMSCs and PDLSCs in response to E-cigs with different exposure methods and flavors in vitro, and indicated a novel mechanism of KDM6B-mediated H3K27me3 on enhancers for gene transcription regulation. Our data could be served as a resource for emphasizing the understanding of E-cigs in periodontal health.

Abstract
Electronic cigarettes are often used for smoking cessation as a harm reduction strategy, but studies comparing risks of electronic cigarettes (ECs) and tobacco cigarettes (TCs) are scarce. Ventricular repolarization in people who smoke TCs is abnormal. Baseline repolarization was compared among non-smokers, and people who use ECs or TCs. Then, the acute effects of ECs and TCs on metrics of ventricular repolarization, were compared in people who chronically smoke. A total of 110 participants(59 female), including 35 people(21 females) in the TC cohort, 34 people(17 females) in the EC cohort, and 41 people(21 females) in the Non-Smoker (NS) cohort were included. None of the primary outcomes, Tp-e, Tp-e/QT, and Tp-e/QTc, was different among the three cohorts at baseline, even when adjusted for sex. Compared to the control exposure, standing after acutely using the EC, but not the TC significantly prolonged all three primary indices of ventricular repolarization in people who smoke TCs. The major new finding in this study is that in people who smoke TCs, using an EC compared to a TC significantly prolongs ventricular repolarization. Further, in our subgroup analysis by sex, this adverse effect on repolarization is found only in male, not female smokers. In summary, chronic TC smoking is the most prevalent, modifiable risk factor for cardiovascular death, including sudden cardiac death. If used for smoking cessation, ECs should only be used in the short term since they too carry their own risks; this risk appears to be greatest in males compared with females who smoke.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To explore whether the use of e-cigarettes and conventional cigarettes affects the prevalence of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in adults. METHODS Complete records of smoking and sleep about OSA from the 2015-2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. The adults were divided into four groups: noncurrent smokers, current electronic cigarettes (e-cigarette) users only, current conventional cigarettes (c-cigarette) users only, and dual users. OSA was assessed by three main signs and symptoms from the questionnaire. Multivariable logistic regression after adjusting for covariates was conducted to investigate the association of OSA with different smoking patterns. RESULTS Among the 11,248 participants, the prevalence of OSA was higher among smokers compared to non-smokers (P < 0.0001). In a stratified analysis of smoke manners, the results showed that an increased prevalence of OSA with c-cigarette use alone (OR = 1.38, 95% CI = 1.17-1.63) and dual-use (OR = 1.78, 95% CI = 1.37-2.32) compared to non-smoking participants, while there was no significant difference with e-cigarette use (OR = 0.84, 95% CI = 0.52-1.37). Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed the prevalence of OSA is highest in dual users (OR = 1.93, 95% CI = 1.39-2.69) than non-smokers. CONCLUSION Our findings indicate the prevalence of OSA was higher in c-cigarette smokers than in non-smokers, while there was no significant difference in the prevalence of OSA between e-cigarette smokers and non-smokers. Dual users had the highest prevalence for OSA compared to c-cigarette smokers, e-cigarette smokers and non-smokers.

Abstract
Public health experts caution that legalization of recreational marijuana may normalize smoking and undermine the decades-long achievements of tobacco control policy. However, very little is known about the impact of recreational marijuana laws (RMLs) on adult tobacco use. Using newly available data from the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH) and dynamic difference-in-differences and discrete-time hazard approaches, we find that RML adoption increases prior-month marijuana use among adults ages 18-and-older by 2-percentage-points, driven by an increase in marijuana initiation among prior non-users. However, this increase in adult marijuana use does not extend to tobacco use. Rather, we find that RML adoption is associated with a lagged reduction in electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) use, consistent with the hypothesis that ENDS and marijuana are substitutes. Moreover, auxiliary analyses from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) show that RML adoption is associated with a reduction in adult cigarette smoking. We conclude that RMLs may generate tobacco-related health benefits.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To review and synthesise the global evidence regarding the health effects of electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes, vapes). STUDY DESIGN Umbrella review (based on major independent reviews, including the 2018 United States National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine [NASEM] report) and top-up systematic review of published, peer-reviewed studies in humans examining the relationship of e-cigarette use to health outcomes published since the NASEM report. DATA SOURCES Umbrella review: eight major independent reviews published 2017-2021. Systematic review: PubMed, MEDLINE, Scopus, Web of Science, the Cochrane Library, and PsycINFO (articles published July 2017 - July 2020 and not included in NASEM review). DATA SYNTHESIS Four hundred eligible publications were included in our synthesis: 112 from the NASEM review, 189 from our top-up review search, and 99 further publications cited by other reviews. There is conclusive evidence linking e-cigarette use with poisoning, immediate inhalation toxicity (including seizures), and e-cigarette or vaping product use-associated lung injury (EVALI; largely but not exclusively for e-liquids containing tetrahydrocannabinol and vitamin E acetate), as well as for malfunctioning devices causing injuries and burns. Environmental effects include waste, fires, and generation of indoor airborne particulate matter (substantial to conclusive evidence). There is substantial evidence that nicotine e-cigarettes can cause dependence or addiction in non-smokers, and strong evidence that young non-smokers who use e-cigarettes are more likely than non-users to initiate smoking and to become regular smokers. There is limited evidence that freebase nicotine e-cigarettes used with clinical support are efficacious aids for smoking cessation. Evidence regarding effects on other clinical outcomes, including cardiovascular disease, cancer, development, and mental and reproductive health, is insufficient or unavailable. CONCLUSION E-cigarettes can be harmful to health, particularly for non-smokers and children, adolescents, and young adults. Their effects on many important health outcomes are uncertain. E-cigarettes may be beneficial for smokers who use them to completely and promptly quit smoking, but they are not currently approved smoking cessation aids. Better quality evidence is needed regarding the health impact of e-cigarette use, their safety and efficacy for smoking cessation, and effective regulation. Abstract
INTRODUCTION Trends in knowledge and beliefs about e-cigarette (EC) harm have been changing. Our study examined whether change in risk perception of ECs predicts cigarettes smoked per week (CPW) among Black and Latinx individuals who smoke enrolled in an EC switching randomized clinical trial (RCT). METHODS We analyzed data from one arm of a 6-week EC RCT of individuals who smoke attempting to switch to nicotine salt pod system ECs (n = 110; Black, n = 57; Latinx, n = 53). Our explanatory variable was change in risk perception of ECs compared to combustible cigarettes (CC) from baseline to week 6. Our outcome was CPW measured by a 7-day timeline follow-back interview. A negative binomial GEE model was conducted to examine the association between risk perception and CPW at baseline and week 6. RESULTS The mean CPW decreased from 82.8 (SD=49.8) at baseline to 15.8 (SD=29.8) at week 6. A one-level increase in EC risk perception (i.e., EC perceived as riskier than CC from baseline to week 6) was associated with an increase in CPW (IRR: 1.83, 95% CI: 1.03; 3.24). Latinx participants were more likely to have higher CPW as EC risk perception increased compared to Black participants (IRR=1.89, 95% CI: 1.09; 3.26). CONCLUSION We found that CPW at week 6 was significantly higher as change in risk perception of EC relative to CC increased. Given the influence of risk perception on smoking behavior, people who smoke should be educated on the benefits and harms of ECs.
