Abstract
The interplay of various body systems, encompassing those that govern cardiovascular and metabolic functions, has evolved alongside the development of multicellular organisms. This evolutionary process is essential for the coordination and maintenance of homeostasis and overall health by facilitating the adaptation of the organism to internal and external cues. Disruption of these complex interactions contributes to the development and progression of pathologies that involve multiple organs. Obesity-associated cardiovascular risks, such as hypertension, highlight the significant influence that metabolic processes exert on the cardiovascular system. This cardiometabolic communication is reciprocal, as indicated by substantial evidence pointing to the ability of the cardiovascular system to affect metabolic processes, with pathophysiological implications in disease conditions. In this review, I outline the bidirectional nature of the cardiometabolic interaction, with special emphasis on the impact that metabolic organs have on the cardiovascular system. I also discuss the contribution of the neural circuits and autonomic nervous system in mediating the crosstalk between cardiovascular and metabolic functions in health and disease, along with the molecular mechanisms involved.

Abstract
The vagus nerve and the celiaco-mesenteric ganglia (CMG) are required for reduction of meal size (MS) and prolongation of the intermeal interval (IMI) by intraperitoneal (ip) sulfated cholecystokinin-8 (CCK-8). However, recently we have shown that the gut regulates these responses. Therefore, reevaluating the role of the vagus and the CMG in the feeding responses evoked by CCK is necessary because the gut contains the highest concentration of enteric, vagal and splanchnic afferents and CCK-A receptors, which are required for reduction of food intake by this peptide, compared to other abdominal organs. To address this necessity, we injected sulfated CCK-8 (0, 0.1, 0.5, 1 and 3 nmol/kg) in the aorta, near the gastrointestinal sites of action of the peptide, in three groups of free-feeding rats (n = 10 rats per group), subdiaphragmatic vagotomy (VGX), celiaco-mesenteric ganglionectomy (CMGX) and sham-operated, and recorded seven feeding responses. In the sham group, CCK-8 reduced MS (normal chow), prolonged the intermeal interval (IMI, time between first and second meals), increased satiety ratio (SR, IMI/MS), shortened duration of first meal, reduced total (24 hrs) food intake and reduced number of meals relative to saline vehicle. Vagotomy attenuated all of the previous responses except IMI length and SR, and CMGX attenuated all of those responses. In conclusion, the feeding responses evoked by sulfated CCK-8 require, independently, the vagus nerve and the CMG.

Abstract
The pathogenesis of hypertension remains elusive. Current treatments on hypertension have only achieved modest reductions. Facilitating theoretical research and looking for new therapeutic strategy are urgently needed. Besides food digestion and nutrients absorption, the gastrointestinal tract (GI) has been shown to influence the status of the central nervous system, immune system, metabolism, and cardiovascular homeostasis. Emerging findings demonstrate that endogenous factors derived from GI including gut hormones, autonomic nerve, and gut microbiota play important roles in the regulation of vascular function and/or blood pressure. Meanwhile, evidences from clinical practice and experimental study have found that intervention in GI through metabolic surgery, probiotics consumption, and dietary modification can efficiently ameliorate or even remit hypertension and related cardiometabolic diseases. Thus, we propose that GI might be an initiating organ of hypertension and a promising target for the management of hypertension. Further, illuminating this concept may aid to understand the pathogenesis and control of hypertension.

Abstract
Obesity is a risk factor that worsens cardiovascular events leading to higher morbidity and mortality. However, the exact mechanisms of relation between obesity and cardiovascular events are unclear. Nevertheless, it has been demonstrated that pharmacological therapy for obesity has great potential to improve some cardiovascular problems. Therefore, it is important to determine the common mechanisms regulating both food intake and blood pressure. Several hormones produced by peripheral tissues work together with neuropeptides involved in the regulation of both food intake and blood pressure. Anorexigenic (food intake lowering) hormones such as leptin, glucagon-like peptide-1 and cholecystokinin cooperate with α-melanocyte-stimulating hormone, cocaine- and amphetamine-regulated peptide as well as prolactin-releasing peptide. Curiously their collective actions result in increased sympathetic activity, especially in the kidney, which could be one of the factors responsible for the blood pressure increases seen in obesity. On the other hand, orexigenic (food intake enhancing) peptides, especially ghrelin released from the stomach and acting in the brain, cooperates with orexins, neuropeptide Y, melanin-concentrating hormone and galanin, which leads to decreased sympathetic activity and blood pressure. This paradox should be intensively studied in the future. Moreover, it is important to know that the hypothalamus together with the brainstem seem to be major structures in the regulation of food intake and blood pressure. Thus, the above mentioned regions might be essential brain components in the transmission of peripheral signals to the central effects. In this short review, we summarize the current information on cardiovascular effects of food intake regulating peptides.

Abstract
The gut hormone cholecystokinin (CCK) acts at subdiaphragmatic vagal afferents to induce renal and splanchnic sympathoinhibition and vasodilatation, via reflex inhibition of a subclass of cardiovascular-controlling neurons in the rostroventrolateral medulla (RVLM). These sympathoinhibitory and vasodilator responses are blunted in obese, hypertensive rats and our aim in the present study was to determine whether this is attributable to (i) altered sensitivity of presympathetic vasomotor RVLM neurons, and (ii) aberrant peripheral or central signalling mechanisms. Using a diet-induced obesity model, male Sprague-Dawley rats exhibited either an obesity-prone (OP) or obesity-resistant (OR) phenotype when placed on a medium high fat diet for 13-15 weeks; control animals were placed on a low fat diet. OP animals had elevated resting arterial pressure compared to OR/control animals (P < 0.05). Barosensitivity of RVLM neurons was significantly attenuated in OP animals (P < 0.05), suggesting altered baroreflex gain. CCK induced inhibitory responses in RVLM neurons of OR/control animals but not OP animals. Subdiaphragmatic vagal nerve responsiveness to CCK and CCK1 receptor mRNA expression in nodose ganglia did not differ between the groups, but CCK induced significantly less Fos-like immunoreactivity in both the nucleus of the solitary tract and the caudal ventrolateral medulla of OP animals compared to controls (P < 0.05). These results suggest that blunted sympathoinhibitory and vasodilator responses in obesity-related hypertension are due to alterations in RVLM neuronal responses, resulting from aberrant central but not peripheral signalling mechanisms. In obesity, blunted sympathoinhibitory mechanisms may lead to increased regional vascular resistance and contribute to the development of hypertension.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Neck circumference, beyond a measure of obesity, is a unique fat depot with increasing significance. This study aimed to investigate the association between neck circumference and biomarkers, indicators of cardiovascular risk. METHODS During 2009, 490 volunteers (46 ± 16 years, 40% men) were consecutively enrolled to the study (participation rate 85%). Biochemical analyses were performed through established procedures, and after 12-h fasting and glucose, total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, triglycerides, cystatin C, uric acid and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein were measured. Anthropometric, lifestyle and dietary characteristics were also recorded to account for potential confounders. Additive linear and logistic regression models were used to evaluate the association between neck circumference and biomarkers of cardiometabolic risk. RESULTS A positive association between neck circumference and systolic and diastolic blood pressure, glucose, triglycerides, uric acid and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein, and a negative association with high-density lipoprotein cholesterol were revealed (all ps < 0.05); models were adjusted for age, gender, years of school, smoking, physical activity status, MedDietScore and alcohol intake. The relationship between neck circumference and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, glucose, triglycerides and uric acid remained significant when models were further stratified by body mass index class and abnormal waist circumference. CONCLUSION Neck circumference was found to be a powerful indicator of atherogenic dyslipidaemia above and beyond central obesity indicators.

Abstract
Studies have been conducted in order to identify the main factors that contribute to the development of obesity. The role of genetics has also been extensively studied. However, the substantial augmentation of obesity prevalence in the last 20 years cannot be justified only by genetic alterations that, theoretically, would have occurred in such a short time. Thus, the difference in obesity prevalence in various population groups is also related to environmental factors, especially diet and the reduction of physical activity. These aspects, interacting or not with genetic factors, could explain the excess of body fat in large proportions worldwide. This article will focus on positive energy balance, high-fat diet, alteration in appetite control hormones, insulin resistance, amino acids metabolism, and the limitation of the experimental models to address this complex issue.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW Cholecystokinin (CCK) controls nutrient delivery to the small intestine by inhibiting food intake and gastric emptying. This review deals with recent work shedding new light on how and when. RECENT FINDINGS Intestinal I-cells release CCK in response to dietary lipid and protein through mechanisms involving the G-protein-coupled receptors GPR40 and calcium-sensing receptor. Vagal afferent neurons are a primary target of CCK and are now recognized as an important site of integration of peripheral signals regulating ingestion. In addition to regulating vagal afferent nerve discharge, CCK also controls the expression of receptors and peptide neurotransmitters by these neurons; these actions are potentiated by leptin and inhibited by ghrelin. The responses of vagal afferent neurons to CCK are attenuated in obesity. Studies of human central nervous system responses using functional magnetic resonance imaging indicate activation of brainstem, hypothalamus and motor cortex by ingested fatty acid that is inhibited by a CCK-1 receptor antagonist. CCK may also play a role in adaptive responses in pancreatic islets by maintaining β-cell mass and acting as an incretin in certain circumstances. SUMMARY CCK mediates inhibition of food intake in response to ingested lipid and protein; resistance to CCK occurs in obesity and may contribute to altered mechanisms regulating food intake.

Abstract
Gastrointestinal (GI) motility and gut hormones have been considered to be involved in the development and maintenance of obesity. Our aim was to assess the relationships between gastric emptying (GE), GI transit and gut hormones and leptin concentrations in diet-induced obese rat model. Male 6-week-old Sprague-Dawley rats were fed with a high-fat (HF) diet for 8weeks to generate diet-induced obesity (DIO) and diet resistant (DR) rats. GE, GI transit and plasma ghrelin, cholecystokinin (CCK), PYY and leptin concentrations were determined in DIO, DR and control (CON) rats. The DIO rats had slower GE, higher plasma leptin and CCK concentrations, and lower plasma ghrelin concentration compared with CON and DR rats. GE was correlated with plasma ghrelin (r=0.402, P=0.028), CCK (r=-0.518, P=0.003) and leptin concentration (r=-0.514, P=0.004). The slower GE, which can be considered as an adaptive response aimed at HF diet induced obesity, may be mediated by changes of plasma ghrelin, CCK and leptin concentrations.
