Peak week recommendations for bodybuilders: an evidence based approach

Bodybuilding is a competitive endeavor where a combination of muscle size, symmetry, "conditioning" (low body fat levels), and stage presentation are judged. Success in bodybuilding requires that competitors achieve their peak physique during the day of competition. To this end, competitors have been reported to employ various peaking interventions during the final days leading to competition. Commonly reported peaking strategies include altering exercise and nutritional regimens, including manipulation of macronutrient, water, and electrolyte intake, as well as consumption of various dietary supplements. The primary goals for these interventions are to maximize muscle glycogen content, minimize subcutaneous water, and reduce the risk abdominal bloating to bring about a more aesthetically pleasing physique. Unfortunately, there is a dearth of evidence to support the commonly reported practices employed by bodybuilders during peak week. Hence, the purpose of this article is to critically review the current literature as to the scientific support for pre-contest peaking protocols most commonly employed by bodybuilders and provide evidence-based recommendations as safe and effective strategies on the topic.

Enhanced sympathoinhibitory response to volume expansion in conscious hindlimb-unloaded rats

Prolonged exposure to microgravity or bed rest produces cardiovascular deconditioning, which is characterized by reductions in plasma volume, alterations in autonomic function, and a predisposition toward orthostatic intolerance. Although the precise mechanisms have not been fully elucidated, it is possible that augmented cardiopulmonary reflexes contribute to some of these effects. The purpose of the present study was to test the hypothesis that sympathoinhibitory responses to volume expansion are enhanced in the hindlimb-unloaded (HU) rat, a model of cardiovascular deconditioning. Mean arterial blood pressure, heart rate, and renal sympathetic nerve activity (RSNA) responses to isotonic volume expansion (0.9% saline iv, 15% of plasma volume over 5 min) were examined in conscious HU (14 days) and control animals. Volume expansion produced decreases in RSNA in both groups; however, this effect was significantly greater in HU rats (-46 +/- 7 vs. -25 +/- 4% in controls). Animals instrumented for central venous pressure (CVP) did not exhibit differences in CVP responses to volume expansion. These data suggest that enhanced cardiopulmonary reflexes may be involved in the maintenance of reduced plasma volume and contribute to attenuated baroreflex-mediated sympathoexcitation after spaceflight or bed rest.

Fluid volume and osmoregulation in humans after a week of head-down bed rest

Body fluid homeostasis was investigated during chronic bed rest (BR) and compared with that of acute supine conditions. The hypothesis was tested that 6 degrees head-down BR leads to hypovolemia, which activates antinatriuretic mechanisms so that the renal responses to standardized saline loading are attenuated. Isotonic (20 ml/kg body wt) and hypertonic (2.5%, 7.2 ml/kg body wt) infusions were performed in eight subjects over 20 min following 7 and 10 days, respectively, of BR during constant sodium intake (200 meq/day). BR decreased body weight (83.0 +/- 4.8 to 81.8 +/- 4.4 kg) and increased plasma osmolality (285.9 +/- 0.6 to 288.5 +/- 0.9 mosmol/kgH(2)O, P < 0.05). Plasma ANG II doubled (4.2 +/- 1.2 to 8.8 +/- 1.8 pg/ml), whereas other endocrine variables decreased: plasma atrial natriuretic peptide (42 +/- 3 to 24 +/- 3 pg/ml), urinary urodilatin excretion rate (4.5 +/- 0.3 to 3.2 +/- 0.1 pg/min), and plasma vasopressin (1.7 +/- 0.3 to 0.8 +/- 0.2 pg/ml, P < 0.05). During BR, the natriuretic response to the isotonic saline infusion was augmented (39 +/- 8 vs. 18 +/- 6 meq sodium/350 min), whereas the response to hypertonic saline was unaltered (32 +/- 8 vs. 29 +/- 5 meq/350 min, P < 0.05). In conclusion, BR elicits antinatriuretic endocrine signals, but it does not attenuate the renal natriuretic response to saline stimuli in men; on the contrary, the response to isotonic saline is augmented.
