Postural control and perturbation response in aging populations: fall risk implications

Temporal adaptation of the postural control following a prolonged fin swimming

PURPOSE

Postural control deteriorates following a transition between two environments, highlighting a sensory conflict when returning to natural conditions. Aquatic immersion offers new perspectives for studying postural control adaptation in transitional situations. Our aim is to study immediate and post-task static postural control adaptation on land after a prolonged fin swimming exercise in total immersion.

METHODS

Standing static postural control was assessed in 14 professional or recreational SCUBA divers (11 men, 3 women; 33.21 ± 10.70 years), with eyes open and closed, before, immediately after, and in the following 20 min following a fully-immersed 45-min fin swimming exercise. Centre-of-pressure metrics (COP) including average position, amplitude, velocity, length and 95% ellipse were evaluated in medial-lateral (x-axis) and anterior-posterior (y-axis) directions with a force platform. The Romberg ratio was also assessed for each metric.

RESULTS

A two-way repeated measures analysis of variance revealed a significant effect of the measurement period on COPx vel (p = 0.01), COPy vel (p < 0.01) and Length (p < 0.01), and of the visual condition on COPy vel (p < 0.01) and Length (p < 0.01). Eyes closed measures were systematically higher than eyes open measures despite there being no significant difference in the Romberg ratio in all periods. Post-immersion, the velocity and total trajectory of the centre of pressure remained systematically lower than baseline values in both visual conditions.

CONCLUSION

Post-immersion, COP velocity and length significantly decreased, suggesting a sensory reweighting strategy potentially associated with ankle stiffening.

Assessing fall risk and equilibrium function in patients with age-related macular degeneration and glaucoma: An observational study

BACKGROUND

Falls in older adults are a significant public health concern, and age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and glaucoma have been identified as potential visual risk factors. This study was designed to assess equilibrium function, fall risk, and fall-related self-efficacy (an individual's belief in their capacity to act in ways necessary to reach specific goals) in patients with AMD and glaucoma.

METHODS

This observational study was performed at the Otorhinolaryngology Department of Shinseikai Toyama Hospital. The cohort comprised 60 participants (AMD; n = 30; median age, 76.0 years; and glaucoma; n = 30; median age, 64.5 years). Visual acuity and visual fields were assessed using the decimal best-corrected visual acuity and Humphrey visual field tests, respectively. The evaluation metrics included pathological eye movement analysis, bedside head impulse test, single-leg upright test, eye-tracking test, optokinetic nystagmus, and posturography. Furthermore, we administered questionnaires for fall risk determinants including the Dizziness Handicap Inventory, Activities-Specific Balance Confidence Scale, Falls Efficacy Scale-International, and Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, and Spearman's correlation analysis was employed to examine the interrelations among the equilibrium function, fall risk, and other pertinent variables.

RESULTS

Most participants exhibited standard outcomes in equilibrium function evaluations. Visual acuity and field deficits had a minimal impact on subjective dizziness manifestations, degree of disability, and fall-related self-efficacy. Both groups predominantly showed high self-efficacy. No significant correlation was observed between visual acuity or field deficits and body equilibrium function or fall risk. However, greater peripheral visual field impairment was associated with a tendency for sensory reweighting from visual to somatosensory.

CONCLUSION

Self-efficacy was higher and fall risk was relatively lower among patients with mild-to-moderate visual impairment, with a tendency for sensory reweighting from visual to somatosensory in those with greater peripheral visual field impairment. Further studies are required to validate these findings.

The 6-minute walk test and fall risk in patients with heart failure: A cross-sectional study

BACKGROUND

Given the increased risk of falls in patients with heart failure (HF), there is limited information in the literature about the possible relationship between fall risk and functional capacity.

OBJECTIVE

To investigate the relationship between functional capacity and fall risk in patients with HF and to determine whether there are differences in clinical parameters between patients with and without fall risk.

METHODS

The study included 64 patients with HF. The Activity-Specific Balance Confidence Scale (ABC) determined the fall risk. Functional capacity was assessed with the 6-minute walk test (6MWT). The Berg Balance Scale (BBS), the timed up-and-go test (TUG), and the five times sit-to-stand (5-STS) test were used to evaluate functional balance and mobility. Comorbidities and dyspnea perception were assessed with the Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI) and modified Medical Research Council (mMRC), respectively.

RESULTS

The 6MWT was associated with fall risk in logistic regression with an odds ratio of 0.979 (0.970-0.989, p < 0.001). Furthermore, the 6MWT had a discriminative value for increased fall risk in patients with HF, with a cutoff value of 248 m. Patients with increased fall risk had lower 6MWT distance, BBS, and gait speed, and higher CCI and mMRC, number of falls, duration of TUG and 5STS compared to patients with no increased fall risk (p < 0.05).

CONCLUSIONS

The study results demonstrated that 6MWT may be a clinically useful tool in quickly identifying potential balance problems and increased fall risk by providing insight into fall risk/balance confidence in addition to assessing functional capacity.

Interaction between visual impairment and subjective cognitive complaints on physical activity impairment in U.S. older adults: NHANES 2005-2008

BACKGROUND/AIM

To investigate the independent relationships of visual impairment (VI) and Subjective cognitive complaints (SCC) with physical function impairment (PFI) and the interaction effect between VI and SCC on PFI in American older adults.

METHODS

The data of this cross-sectional study was obtained from the 2005-2008 National Health and Examination Survey (NHANES) conducted in the United States. The VI criterion included both subjective self-reported eyesight conditions and objective visual acuity test results. The self-reported questionnaires were utilized to determine PFI and SCC. According to the survey design of NHANS, original data were weighted to produce nationally representative estimates. Both the unweighted original data and weighted estimates underwent analysis. Crude and adjusted logistic models were employed to assess the pairwise associations among VI, SCC, and PFI. To assess the interactive effect, measures such as the relative excess risk due to interaction (RERI), attributable proportion due to interaction (AP), and synergy index (S) were calculated.

RESULTS

A total of 2,710 subjects (weighted n = 38,966,687) aged 60 years or older were included. Compared with subjects without subjective visual impairment (SVI), those with SVI had a significant positive association with PFI [weighted OR (95%CI): 3.11 (2.25, 4.31)]. After multi-variable adjusting, the relationship remained significant [weighted OR (95%CI): 1.90 (1.32, 2.72)]. Similarly, those with objective visual impairment (OVI) were positively associated with the risk of PFI in the crude model [weighted OR (95%CI): 2.35 (1.53, 3.61)] and adjusted model [weighted OR (95%CI): 1.84 (1.07, 3.17)]. Moreover, we found the association of SCC with an increased risk of FPI [crude weighted OR (95%CI): 5.02 (3.40, 7.40); adjusted weighted OR (95%CI): 3.29 (2.01, 5.38)]. Ultimately, the additive interaction showed there was a significant positive interaction term between SVI and SCC on PFI, while OVI and SCC did not.

CONCLUSION

Both VI and SCC were significantly associated with PFI in elder adults. Besides, there was a significant synergistic interaction between SVI and SCC on PFI, which indicated the improvement of SVI and SCC may be beneficial for the prevention of PFI. For the elderly, especially those with multiple disabilities, comprehensive and targeted approaches are imperative to foster their overall well-being and health.

Leading limb biomechanical response following compelled forward and descending body shift in old versus young adults

BACKGROUND

Falls pose a significant health risk in older adults, with stair descent falls carrying particularly severe consequences. Reduced balance control and limb support due to aging-related physiological and neuromuscular decline are critical components in increased falling risk in older adults. Understanding the age-associated abnormalities in balance control and limb support strategies during sudden forward and downward body shift could reveal potential biomechanical deficits responsible for increased falling risks in older adults. This study investigates balance regulatory responses following first-time exposure to compelled forward and downward body shift in young and older adults.

METHODS

Thirteen healthy old and thirteen healthy young adults participated in this study. Participants stood on two adjacent perturbation platforms in modified tandem stance. The leading limb support surface dropped 3 in. vertically at an unknown time. The anterior margin of stability and center of mass velocity, peak vertical ground reaction forces, and leading limb ankle and knee joint angular displacement, torque, and power during the initial response phase were compared between age groups.

FINDINGS

Compared to young adults, older adults showed higher center of mass velocity, lower margin of stability, peak vertical ground reaction force, peak ankle and knee joint power, and peak knee joint torque during the initial response phase.

INTERPRETATIONS

The abnormalities potentially identified in our study, particularly in dynamic stability regulation, limb support force generation, and shock absorption may affect the ability to arrest the body's forward and downward motion. These deficits may contribute to an increased risk of forward falls in aging.

The effect of transcranial direct current stimulation associated with video game training on the postural balance of older women in the community: A blind, randomized, clinical trial

BACKGROUND

Falls are frequent in older adults and can cause trauma, injury, and death. Fall prevention with virtual reality presents good results in improving postural control. Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) has been used with the same aim; however, the combination of the two techniques has still been little studied.

PURPOSE

To assess whether tDCS can enhance the effect of video game training (VGT) on improving the postural balance of healthy older women.

METHOD

A blinded, randomized, controlled clinical trial was conducted with 57 older women who were randomized to three balance training groups: Control Group (VGT), Anodal Group (VGT combined with anodic tDCS-atDCS), and Sham Group (VGT combined with sham tDCS-stDCS). Balance training was performed twice a week for four weeks, totalizing eight 20-min sessions using VGT associated with tDCS. Postural balance was assessed pre-and post-training and 30 days after the end of the eight sessions using the Mini-Balance Evaluation Systems Test.

RESULTS

Compared to pre-intervention the Mini BEST test increased similarly in the three groups in post-intervention (control: pre 23.7 ± 2.8 to post 27.0 ± 2.2; anodal: pre 24.4 ± 1 to post 27.7 ± 0.8 and sham: pre 24.2 ± 1.9 to post 26.5 ± 1.6; p < 0.001) and follow-up (control: pre 23.7 ± 2.8 to follow-up 26.8 ± 2.3; anodal: pre 24.4 ± 1 to follow-up 27.3 ± 1.4 and sham: pre 24.2 ± 1.9 to follow-up 26.8 ± 1.5; p < 0.001).

CONCLUSION

There was an improvement in the postural balance of the three training groups that were independent of tDCS.

DISCUSSION

Some studies have shown the positive tDCS effects associated with other tasks to improve balance. However, these results convey the effects of only anodic-tDCS compared to sham-tDCS. Possibly, the effect of VGT surpassed the tDCS effects, promoting a ceiling effect from the combination of these two therapies. However, studies with other therapies combined with tDCS for older adults deserve to be investigated, as well as in frail older people.

Improving Older Adults' Functional Health Using the Progressive Stay Strong, Stay Healthy Program

This study assessed the Stay Strong, Stay Healthy (SSSH) level two resistance training program in 406 older adults (69.3 ± 8.1 years). SSSH included 10 exercises completed during 60 minute sessions, which were offered twice weekly for eight weeks. 30-second sit-to-stand (30STS), timed-up-and-go (TUG), flexibility, and balance poses were completed pre/post-SSSH. Paired t-tests with Bonferroni corrections showed the whole group improved 30STS, TUG, flexibility, and total balance scores over time (p < .001). Repeated measures analyses of variance showed both geography and age groups improved 30STS, TUG, flexibility, and total balance scores over time (all time effects p ≤ .039). Independent t-tests showed rural participants improved to a similar or greater absolute extent than their urban neighbors for nearly all measures and all age groups improved to a similar absolute magnitude over time. This study demonstrates SSSH level two improves physical function in older adults and these benefits are similar across geography and age groups.

Exercise interventions, postural control, and prefrontal cortex activation in older adults

Improving postural control in older adults is necessary for reducing fall risk, and prefrontal cortex activation may also play a role. We sought to examine the impact of exercise interventions on postural control and prefrontal cortex activation during standing balance tasks. We hypothesized that balance would improve and prefrontal control would be reduced. We assessed a subset of participants enrolled in a randomized trial of two exercise interventions. Both groups completed strength and endurance training and the experimental treatment arm included training on timing and coordination of stepping. Postural control and prefrontal cortex activation were measured during dual-task standing balance tasks before and after the intervention. Eighteen participants in the standard strengthening and mobility training arm and 16 in the timing and coordination training arm were included. We examined pre- to post-intervention changes within each study arm, and compared them between interventions. Results did not show any pre- to post-intervention changes on standing postural control nor prefrontal cortex activation in either arm. In addition, there were no differences between the two intervention arms in either balance or prefrontal activation. While exercise interventions can improve mobility, we do not demonstrate evidence of improved standing balance or prefrontal control in standing.

Influence of age on static postural control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus: a cross-sectional study

Aim

It was the aim of this study to assess static postural control characteristics in people with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D) of different ages using a force platform. A relationship was also established between static postural control parameters and age in this study.

Methods

A total of 706 participants with T2D were included in this study. The participants were stratified into three age groups: Group 1 (<60 years old), Group 2 (60-70 years old), and Group 3 (>70 years old). Static postural control assessment during two-leg stance was performed on a force platform by all participants. The center of pressure (CoP)-related parameters were measured under two stance conditions (eyes open and closed). Kruskal-Wallis tests were applied to explore the difference among the different age groups. Multivariate regression analysis was performed to determine the relation between age and static postural control parameters.

Results

Group 1 (<60 years old) had significantly less CoP total tracking length (TTL), sway area (SA), and CoP velocity along the Y direction (V-Y) under both eyes-open and eyes-closed conditions compared with Group 2 (60-70 years old) and Group 3 (>70 years old). Group 1 (<60 years old) had significantly less CoP maximum sway length along the X direction (MSL_X) and longer tracking length each area unit (TTL/SA) under the eyes-open condition compared with Group 2 (60-70 years old) and Group 3 (>70 years old). There was a significantly positive correlation between age and the most static postural parameters such as CoP TTL, SA, MSL-X, MSL-Y, and V-Y. There was a significantly negative correlation between age and TTL/SA.

Conclusion

This study suggested that older T2D participants had worse static postural control ability than younger ones. Most static postural parameters presented a significant correlation with age; the higher the age, the worse the static postural control.

Relationship between Cognitive Impairment and Depressive Symptoms with Somatosensory Functions in Diabetic and Non-Diabetic Older Adults and Its Impact on Quality of Life

Aging is an inevitable process that impacts the peripheral and central nervous systems and is considered one of the strongest risk factors for neurodegenerative diseases. In addition, when it also presents with diabetes mellitus, the risk of neurological damage may be further increased. This current study aimed to explore the relationships between peripheral sensory system decline and cognitive functions, the symptoms of depression, and quality of life (QoL) as metrics of central nervous system impairment in institutionalized older adults. A total of 95 individuals participated in this case-control study, which included diabetics and non-diabetics. The superficial sensory pathway was assessed in terms of thermal sensation, nociception, and non-discriminative touch, and the deep sensory pathway was evaluated by assessing vibration and light touch-pressure sensations. To assess function at the intellectual level, the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) and Trail Making Test (TMT) cognitive functional tests were used, while the symptoms of depression and QoL were explored by employing the Yesavage Geriatric Depression Scale and EuroQol 5D questionnaire (EQ-5D), respectively. In the overall population analyses, altered thermal sensation was significantly associated with cognitive impairment (CI; p < 0.05). In turn, bivariate analyses and a binary logistic regression showed that the symptoms of depression and QoL were significantly related to altered vibratory sensation when assessed using a medical tuning fork (p < 0.05). In the group of diabetic patients, those with CI also had significantly lower thermal sensation (p < 0.05) and non-discriminative touch sensation, although this was only a trend (p = 0.055). Diabetics with depression had a significantly worse non-discriminative touch (p < 0.05) and vibratory sensation when tested with a tuning fork (p < 0.05). In addition, poorer QoL was associated with reduced sensitivity to heat (p < 0.05), light touch pressure (p < 0.05), and vibrations when assessed either with a tuning fork (p < 0.05) or a biothesiometer (p < 0.05). In contrast, no relationships were found between sensory functions and cognitive assessments in non-diabetic patients. These findings indicate that superficial sensitivity damage was related to CI, while deep sensation alterations were related to depression and poor QoL, with diabetes apparently further strengthening these relationships.

Difference in the recruitment of intrinsic foot muscles in the elderly under static and dynamic postural conditions

Background

The effect of foot, especially intrinsic muscles, on postural control and its related mechanisms remain unclear due to the complex structure. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the activation of intrinsic foot muscles in the elderly under static and dynamic postural tasks.

Methods

Twenty-one elderly participants were included to perform different postural tests (sensory organization test (SOT), motor control test (MCT), limit of stability test (LOS), and unilateral stance test) by a NeuroCom Balance Manager System. The participants were instructed to maintain postural stability under conditions with combined different sensory inputs (vision, vestibular, and proprioception) in SOT as well as conditions with translation disturbance in MCT, and to perform an active weight-shifting tasks in LOS. During these tasks, muscle activation were simultaneously acquired from intrinsic foot muscles (abductor halluces (AbH) and flexor digitorum brevis (FDB)) and ankle muscles (anterior tibialis, medial head of gastrocnemius, lateral head of gastrocnemius, and peroneus longus). The root-mean-square amplitude of these muscles in postural tasks was calculated and normalized with the EMG activity in unilateral stance task.

Results

The activation of intrinsic foot muscles significantly differed among different SOT tasks (p < 0.001). Post-hoc tests showed that compared with that under normal condition 1 without sensory interference, EMGs increased significantly under sensory disturbance (conditions 2-6). By contrast, compared with that under the single-sensory disturbed conditions (conditions 2-4; 2 for disturbed vision, 3 for disturbed vestibular sensation, 4 for disturbed proprioception), activation was significantly greater under the dual-sensory disturbed postural tasks (conditions 5 and 6; 5 for disturbed vision and proprioception, 6 for disturbed vestibular sensation and proprioception). In MCT, EMGs of foot muscles increased significantly under different translation speeds (p < 0.001). In LOS, moderate and significant correlations were found between muscle activations and postural stability parameters (AbH, r = 0. 355-0.636, p < 0.05; FDB, r = 0.336-0.622, p < 0.05).

Conclusion

Intrinsic foot muscles play a complementary role to regulate postural stability when disturbances occur. In addition, the recruitment magnitude of intrinsic foot muscles is positively correlated with the limit of stability, indicating their contribution to increasing the limits of stability in the elderly.

Arterial stiffness and augmentation index are associated with balance function in young adults

OBJECTIVE

Arterial stiffness and pulsatile central hemodynamics have been shown to affect various aspects of physical function, such as exercise capacity, gait speed, and motor control. The aim of this study was to examine the potential association between arterial stiffness and balance function in healthy younger men and women.

METHODS

112 participants (age = 21 ± 4 years, n = 78 women) underwent measures of arterial stiffness, pulsatile central hemodynamics, balance function and physical fitness in this cross-sectional study. Postural sway was measured in triplicate while participants stood on a foam surface with their eyes closed for 20 s. The average total center of pressure path length from the three trials was used for analysis. Measures of vascular function were estimated using an oscillometric blood pressure device while at rest and included pulse wave velocity (PWV), augmentation index (AIx), and pulse pressure amplification. Measures of physical fitness used as covariates in statistical models included handgrip strength determined from a handgrip dynamometer, lower-body flexibility assessed using a sit-and-reach test, estimated maximal aerobic capacity (VO₂max) using heart rate and a step test, and body fat percentage measured from air displacement plethysmography.

RESULTS

The results from linear regression indicated that after considering sex, mean arterial pressure, body fat, estimated VO₂max, handgrip strength, and sit-and-reach, PWV (β = 0.44, p < 0.05) and AIx (β = - 0.25, p < 0.01) were significant predictors of postural sway, explaining 10.2% of the variance.

CONCLUSION

Vascular function is associated with balance function in young adults independent of physical fitness. Increased arterial stiffness may negatively influence balance, while wave reflections may be protective for balance.

Effects of a Physical Activity Program that Incorporates Exercises Targeting Balance, Strength, and Proprioception on Cognitive Functions and Physical Performance in Old Adults with Mild Cognitive Impairment

BACKGROUND

Aging often leads to cognitive function decline, sensory structure deterioration, and musculoskeletal system weakening. This impacts postural control during static and dynamic activities like walking, increasing the fall risk among the elderly. Older adults with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) face an elevated fall risk and cognitive decline, magnifying the public health concern.

OBJECTIVE

This study aimed to explore solutions by investigating the effects of a multi-component physical activity program on cognitive and motor functions in MCI patients.

METHODS

Twenty-three participants were enrolled in the study and assigned into two groups: an intervention group (n = 13; age = 85.7±5.5 years) and a control group (n = 9; age = 85±6.7 years). The study spanned two months, with participants engaging in three 60-minute weekly physical exercise sessions. The intervention focused on improving proprioception, muscle strength, and balance.

RESULTS

Results demonstrated significant enhancements in physical performance, fall risk reduction, and balance (p < 0.05). Various tests, including the timed up and go test, Unipedal Stance test, Tinetti test, Short Physical Performance Battery, and 6-minute walking test, indicated these improvements. Cognitive function was evaluated with the Mini-Mental State Examination, revealing non-significant progress (p > 0.05). Predictive models for outcomes were developed using linear regression analysis during the follow-up stage.

CONCLUSIONS

This study underscores the effectiveness of a multi-component physical activity program encompassing balance, proprioception, and muscle-strengthening exercises as a non-pharmaceutical approach in improving balance skills and playing a key role in mitigating the risk of falls among old adults with MCI.

Dynamic Balance and Chest Mobility of Older Adults after Speleotherapy Combined with Pulmonary Rehabilitation, Endurance and Strength Training-A Prospective Study in Chronic Respiratory Diseases

BACKGROUNDS

As people age, they are more likely to experience balance disturbances. Pulmonary rehabilitation is recognized as a core component in the management of older adults with chronic respiratory diseases. The aim of the study was to assess the dynamic balance and chest mobility of older adults participating in speleotherapy combined with pulmonary rehabilitation, endurance and strength training.

METHODS

The study group consisted of 51 older adults with chronic respiratory disorders who participated in a 3-week pulmonary rehabilitation programme in underground salt chambers in the 'Wieliczka' Salt Mine Health Resort. These individuals underwent the Four Square Step Test (FSST) and circumferential chest mobility measurement before and after the outpatient rehabilitation programme conducted 135 m underground.

RESULTS

Before rehabilitation in the underground salt chambers, half of the results (50%, 22 patients) were below the norm in the assessment of chest mobility between maximal inhale and exhale. The average time needed to perform FSST decreased significantly (p ≤ 0.05) from 10.2 ± 1.9 s before the stay to 9.1 ± 1.7 s after the stay and the average increase in chest mobility increased significantly (p ≤ 0.05) from 4.5 ± 5.5 cm to 5.4 ± 2.8 cm.

CONCLUSIONS

Speleotherapy combined with pulmonary rehabilitation, endurance and strength training increased the dynamic balance and chest mobility of older adults with chronic respiratory diseases, as measured by the FSST and circumferential chest expansion assessment.

Acute Resistance Training May Have Lasting Benefit to Middle-Aged Adults

Age-related declines in physical function can be mitigated with resistance training (RT), but most adults do not regularly exercise. We aimed to identify the magnitude and duration of benefits after RT in the Stay Strong, Stay Healthy (SSSH) program. A total of 27 adults (Repeaters n = 15; Summer Only n = 12), aged 60.7 ± 4.8 years, completed the same 8 weeks of SSSH in the summer and Repeaters continued in fall and spring months. Independent and paired t-tests and repeated-measures ANOVAs were used to test changes in survey responses and physical performance over 10 months. Both groups were similar at baseline (p > .07) and improved from pre- to post-summer for health surveys scores, 30 second-sit-to-stand, timed-up-and-go, and sit-n-reach (p ≤ .02). Additionally, Repeaters (measured data) and Summer Only (2.3% modeled decline) maintained those improvements 10 months later. Participation in 8 weeks of SSSH significantly improved physical strength and function and these improvements may last up to a year.

Resistance Training Reduces Age- and Geography-Related Physical Function Discrepancies in Older Adults

Comorbidities affecting physical function increase with advanced-age and rural living. This study investigated the degree of benefit from resistance training (RT) in older adults based on age (50-89 years), location (urban vs. rural), and program duration (10 vs. 8-weeks). 260 participants completed pre- and post-program dynamic and static tasks and flexibility testing. Paired and independent t-tests and one-way and repeated measures ANOVAs were used to test group improvements. All ages improved performance (all p ≤ .002) but those in their 50's improved flexibility the most and those in their 60's improved 30STS more and tandem balance less than those in their 80's. Both rural and urban participants improved in all areas (all p ≤ .002), but rural participants reported greater improvements in tandem balance. Both 10- and 8-week classes improved performance (all p ≤ .001), but 8-week participants improved dynamic tasks and tandem balance more. RT can reduce functional discrepancies in older adults and rural residents.
