Abstract
AIM Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is associated with higher cardiovascular and metabolic risks, as well as with psychosocial disorders. Data regarding quality of life (QoL) in patients with MetS, point towards a significative association between MetS and a worse QoL. It remains unclear whether MetS components and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) are associated with QoL in these individuals. We aimed to evaluate the association between QoL of patients with MetS and prespecified metabolic parameters (anthropometric, lipidic and glucose profiles), the risk of hepatic steatosis and fibrosis, and hepatic elastography parameters. METHODS Cross-sectional study including patients from microDHNA cohort. This cohort includes patients diagnosed with MetS, 18 to 75 years old, followed in our tertiary center. The evaluation included anamnesis, physical examination, a QoL questionnaire (Short-Form Health Survey, SF-36), blood sampling and hepatic elastography. We used ordered logistic regression models adjusted to sex, age and body mass index to evaluate the associations between the QoL domains evaluated by SF-36 and the prespecified parameters. RESULTS We included a total of 65 participants with MetS, with 54% being female and the mean age 61.9 ± 9.6 years old. A worse metabolic profile, specifically higher waist circumference, lower HDL, higher triglycerides, and more severe hepatic steatosis, were associated with worse QoL scores in several domains. We found no significant association of hepatic fibrosis with QoL. CONCLUSION Our data suggests that there is a link between a worse metabolic profile (specifically poorer lipidic profile and presence of hepatic steatosis) and a worse QoL in patients with MetS.

Abstract
Purpose The link between metabolic syndrome (MetS) and various stressors has not been thoroughly investigated. We aimed to examine the relationship between MetS and different perceived stressors. Methods In this study, we included participants of the Isfahan Cohort study from three counties in central Iran, with data in the 2007 (n = 3178) and 2013 (n = 1693) follow-up stages. We examined the association between distress and perceived stress domains (including job security, job conflicts, personal conflicts, loss and separation, social relations, and health concerns) and MetS. Results MetS was identified in 35.8% of participants in the 2007 cohort and 46.2% in the 2013 cohort. In the fully adjusted analysis, the odds ratio (OR) (95%CI) for MetS according to psychological status was 1.65 (1.64-1.65) for psychological distress level, 1.09 (1.01-1.20) for psychological distress score, and 1.21 (1.09-1.42) for total perceived stress score. There was also evidence of association for social relations, personal conflicts, job conflicts, job security, health concern, loss and separation, educational concerns, and sexual life subscales. Conclusion Perceived stressors and some of their subscales were associated with MetS.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Previous studies have demonstrated an association between anxiety and metabolic syndrome (MetS). However, the association is still controversial. This updated meta-analysis aimed to reanalyze the association between anxiety and MetS. METHODS We comprehensively searched PubMed, Embase and Web of Science for all related studies published before January 23, 2023. Observational studies that informed effect size with 95% confidence interval (CI) for the association between anxiety and MetS were included. According to heterogeneity between studies, fixed or random effects models were applied to calculate the pooled effect size. Publication bias was examined by funnel plots. RESULTS The research included 24 cross-sectional studies: 20 studies used MetS as the dependent variable with a pooled OR of 1.07 (95% CI: 1.01-1.13) and four studies used anxiety as the dependent variable with a pooled OR of 1.14 (95% CI: 1.07-1.23). Three cohort studies were found: two studies detected the association of baseline anxiety with the risk of MetS, one of the studies demonstrated a significant association, but a similar result was not found in another study; one study showed no significant association between baseline MetS and the risk of anxiety. CONCLUSION Cross-sectional studies indicated an association between anxiety and MetS. The results from cohort studies are still inconsistent and limited. More large-scale prospective studies are needed to further reveal the causal relationship of anxiety with MetS.

Abstract
This study analyzed the factors affecting the health-related quality of life of patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) according to age. We also aimed to determine appropriate strategies to improve their quality of life. Data from the Korea Health Panel Survey (2009-2016) were used in this study. A total of 3806 patients with BPH were divided into 2 groups: younger adults (aged under 65 years) and older adults (aged over 65 years). In addition, a logistic regression analysis was conducted to identify factors affecting the quality of life of young and older patients with BPH. In younger adult patients with BPH, the higher the level of education, the higher the quality of life by a factor of 1.379, and the more intense the physical activity, the lower the quality of life by a factor of 0.791. Also, the longer the sitting time, the lower the quality of life by a factor of 0.765. In contrast, for older adult patients with BPH, the quality of life improved by factors of 1.601 and 2.921, respectively, for health insurance and higher income level. In addition, it was found that the quality of life decreased by a factor of 0.754 in patients who drink alcohol. In order to improve the quality of life of the middle-aged adult population with BPH, it is necessary to reduce sitting time through constant physical activity. Moreover, the cost of medical care should be reduced and the quality of life increased through reductions in surgical treatment, as the burden of medical expenses will degrade the quality of life for older adults.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Various bio-psychological mechanisms underlying the association between mental health problems and metabolic syndrome remain unknown. We investigated the role of irrational beliefs in conjunction with anxiety, depression and hostility in the 10-year metabolic syndrome (MetS) incidence, and the effect of biochemical and socio-behavioral factors on the aforementioned associations. METHODS AND RESULTS ATTICA is a prospective, cohort study (2002-2012). The sample included 591 participants [51.3% men (aged 41.5 ± 10 years) and 48.7% women (aged 37.5 ± 11.5 years)], free of MetS at baseline. Detailed biochemical, clinical, and lifestyle evaluations were performed, while participants' irrational beliefs, anxiety, depression and hostility were assessed using the Irrational Beliefs Inventory, the Spielberger State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, the Zung Self-Rating Depression Scale and the Hostility and Direction of Hostility Questionnaire, respectively. Multiple logistic regression was applied to estimate the odds ratio (OR) of developing MetS and to control for confounders, as well as stratified logistic regression to detect moderator effects. High irrational beliefs were associated with 1.5-times higher odds of developing MetS than low irrational beliefs. Especially, participants with high irrational beliefs and high anxiety were 96% more likely to develop MetS, compared with those with low irrational beliefs and low or high anxiety (OR = 1.96; 95% CI = 1.01, 3.80). CONCLUSION The findings of the study underline the important role of irrational beliefs and anxiety in the development of MetS and the need to build new holistic approaches focused on the primary prevention of both mental health and MetS.

Abstract
Purpose: To assess the modification in quality of life (QoL) of patients with metabolic syndrome (MetS) after participating in Canadian Health Advanced by Nutrition and Graded Exercise (CHANGE) program and identify predictors of this modification in QoL among participants. Methods: A convenience sample of 100 patients with MetS completed the 12-month CHANGE program (diet and exercise regular counseling). 36-Item Short Form Health Survey (SF-36), International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAC), Physician Assessment and Clinical Education (PACE), and the Mediterranean Diet Score (MDS) questionnaires were employed to assess participants' QoL, physical activity (PA), sedentary behaviors, and quality of diet, respectively. In addition, physical fitness tests (6-Minute Walk Test, One-Leg Stance Test, and Grip Strength Test) were used. Medical history, blood tests, and anthropometric [height, weight, and waist circumference (WC)] and blood pressure measurements were performed by a nurse. Linear regression analysis was performed to identify predictors of QoL. Results: Participants' mean age was 58.3 ± 11.0, and 75.4% were females. After the CHANGE program, participants demonstrated significant reduction in the number of MetS criteria and significant improvement of physical and mental components of QoL. Moreover, there was significant increase in participants' PA, MDS, and physical fitness mean scores with corresponding significant reduction in sedentary behavior time, blood pressure, and WC measures. Linear regression analysis revealed that age, WC, screen time, PA, and physical fitness were significant predictors of QoL. Conclusion: The 12-month group-based diet and exercise counseling led to clinically significant improvement in MetS criteria and in important measures of health and fitness among participants, which improved their QoL. Age, fitness measures, and daily screen time were associated with QoL.

Abstract
Objectives It has been suggested that obesity phenotypes are related to mental health problems and health-related quality of life (HRQoL). However, there is no certain consensus. This systematic review aimed to evaluate the association between different obesity phenotypes with common psychiatric symptoms and HRQoL.
Methods Electronic databases i.e. PubMed, Scopus, EMBASE, and google scholar were searched until September 2021, to identify studies that investigated associations between the obesity phenotypes with psychiatric symptoms and/or mental and physical HRQoL. Two researchers independently checked titles and abstracts, evaluated full-text studies, extracted data, and appraised their quality using the Newcastle–Ottawa Scale. Results Eighteen studies, with a total of 3,929,203 participants, were included. Of the studies included in this systematic review, 10 articles evaluated the association between obesity phenotypes and psychiatric symptoms, while six papers investigated the association between HRQoL and obesity phenotypes, and two studies assessed both. As a whole, the findings of these studies suggest that obese individuals with a favorable metabolic profile have a slightly higher risk of mental health problems and poor quality of life, however, the risk becomes larger when obesity is combined with an adverse metabolic profile. So, metabolically healthy obesity may not be a completely benign condition in relation to mental disorders and poor quality of life. Conclusion According to published research, obesity is likely to increase the risk of mental health problems and poor quality of life when metabolic disturbances are present.

Abstract
Metabolic syndrome (MS) and anxiety disorders are common problems among hemodialysis patients (HD). However, there have been no studies defining the role of physical activity in reducing anxiety in HD patients with MS. This study was aimed to determine the effects on the severity of anxiety of a four-week rehabilitation program for HD patients, with or without metabolic syndrome (MS), planned and adapted to their abilities. The study was single-center, interventional, non-randomized, and prospective. Fifty-eight individuals completed the project (28 HD patients and 30 controls (C) with normal kidney function). Each group was divided into two subgroups with respect to MS. The mean age of the subjects in the HD and C groups was 56.9 ± 13.3 years (x¯ ± SD) and 61.5 ± 8.3 years (x¯ ± SD), respectively. Planned and adapted to the patient's abilities, the rehabilitation program based on physiotherapy was provided to each subject for 4 weeks. Baseline and post-intervention determined anxiety levels using the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI). The X1 scale tests state anxiety, and the X2 scale tests trait anxiety. Post-intervention, there was no significant difference in the intensity of state anxiety observed in HD patients compared to C with normal renal function, as observed before the program. After four weeks of regular physical activity planned and adapted to the patient's abilities in an inpatient ward, the level of state anxiety (X1) and trait anxiety (X2) lowered considerably in all HD patients (respectively: 35.1 ± 8.0 vs. 29.2 ± 5.0, p = 0.001 for X1 and 41.8 ± 9.1 vs. 38.1 ± 5.9, p = 0.008 for X2). The rehabilitation program significantly reduced the intensity of state anxiety (X1) in HD patients with MS (35.8 ± 7.9 vs. 29.2 ± 5.1; p = 0.01). The rehabilitation program helped to significantly reduce the intensity of trait anxiety (X2) in HD patients without MS (41.9 ± 10.7 vs. 36.9 ± 5.9; p = 0.04). Four-week physical activity planned and adapted to the patient's abilities reduces the intensity of anxiety in HD patients and controls with normal renal function. HD patients with MS benefit more in terms of reducing perceived state anxiety, and HD patients without MS in terms of reducing trait anxiety.

Abstract
BACKGROUND We aimed to compare demographic, health-related characteristics, and quality of life between adults with cardiovascular or metabolic diseases and the general population. METHODS Data from 25,712 adults assessed on the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey V & VI (2010-2013) were analyzed for differences in health-related quality of life. RESULTS The corrected EuroQol-5 Dimension score mean among participants with cardiovascular or metabolic diseases was significantly lower than for the general population across all five dimensions (P<0.001). Individuals with cardiovascular disease had lower quality of life than those with metabolic diseases. CONCLUSION Adults with cardiovascular or metabolic diseases reported lower health-related quality of life in all domains when compared to adults in the general population. Therefore, interventions and management to improve quality of life among patients with cardiovascular or metabolic diseases are necessary.

Abstract
The aim of this meta-analysis was to assess the effects of a lifestyle intervention through health education on nutrition, physical activity, and healthy habits on physical and mental health-related quality of life (HRQoL), in adults with metabolic syndrome (MetS). The databases used were PubMed, WOS, and Scopus. The inclusion criteria were: observational, longitudinal and randomized clinical trial (RCT) study designs, adults (both sexes), with at least two criteria of MetS, lifestyle intervention and comparison with a control group, and a measurement of HRQoL with a validated questionnaire. We analyzed the Hedges’ g and SF-36 score. I2 statistics were calculated and possible publication and small study biases were assessed using Egger’s test and funnel plots. Seven RCTs were selected for meta-analysis, based on 637 study participants. Significant improvements were found in the physical dimensions of the HRQoL scores for subjects in the active intervention compared to the group that received general lifestyle information (Hedges’ g 0.61, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.31–0.91). Mental health-related quality of life was also significantly improved in the intervention group compared with the control group (Hedges’ g 0.84, 95% CI = 0.64–1.03). In conclusion, our results suggest that, according to the RCTs selected for this meta-analysis, a lifestyle intervention significantly improves HRQoL in all its domains.

Abstract
This study aimed to compare mental health in people with cardiovascular or metabolic diseases and the general adult population in each gender. Cardiovascular and metabolic diseases affect mental health, and the prognosis and incidence rates of these diseases differ by age. To date, studies comparing mental health in adults with cardiovascular or metabolic diseases by gender and with the general population have been insufficient. This work is a cross-sectional study. Data from 9828 men and 13,389 women aged 19 years or older from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey V and VI (2010–2013) were used. Men and women with cardiovascular diseases showed high risks of stress, depression, and suicidal ideation. Men with metabolic diseases had worse mental health in relation to depression and suicidal ideation, and women with metabolic diseases in relation to stress and depression, indicating a need for intervention and management of mental health by gender for these individuals. There is a need to develop a clear perception and understanding, both among practitioners and the general population, of mental health issues associated with having cardiovascular or metabolic diseases. Active, specific health improvement and training programmes considering gender differences are necessary.

Abstract
Background Little is known about the role of physiological stress responses in metabolic syndrome (MetS). Purpose To examine whether patterns of autonomic response to psychological stress are associated with MetS and whether this association is moderated by sex Methods 1121 men and women (Mage = 65.3 ± 6.77 years) with and without coronary artery disease (CAD) underwent an anger recall stressor task. Heart rate and heart-rate variability (HRV; HF, LF/HF) were assessed. Clusters of participants showing similar patterns of response across baseline, stress, and recovery periods were created using ACECLUS and FASTCLUS in SAS. Logistic regressions included clusters and interaction between clusters and sex as independent variables, controlling for relevant covariates. ANCOVAs were conducted in secondary analyses utilizing a continuous composite representation of MetS. Results Men and women showing greater tonic and phasic HR elevations were more likely to meet MetS criteria (OR = 1.45, [95% CI = 1.02–2.07], p = .037). HF-HRV cluster interacted significantly with sex (p < .001) to predict MetS. In women, those with significant parasympathetic withdrawal to stress and poor recovery were more likely to have MetS than women with a more moderate response (OR = 2.56, [95% CI = 1.23–5.41], p = .013). Women who displayed stress-related parasympathetic activation were also at greater risk of MetS (OR = 2.30, [95% CI = 1.30–4.07], p = .004). Results using a continuous measure of MetS were generally consistent with these findings. Conclusion Among older participants with CAD or other noncardiovascular disease, hyperreactivity to stress was associated with greater prevalence of MetS, particularly in women. Consistent with emerging literature, women who showed blunting or activation of parasympathetic responses to stress were similarly at greater risk.

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to identify factors that affect health-related quality of life (HRQOL) of older patients with Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) and suggest ways to improve the same. Through this, we will improve the self-management practice of patients and promote the treatment of BPH in older patients. The 2015 Korea Health Panel Survey data were used in this study. A total of 422 BPH patients aged 65 or older were included. Logistic regression analysis was conducted to identify factors affecting the HRQOL of older patients with BPH. General characteristics of factors affecting older patients with BPH included income level and type of insurance. In addition, among medical-related characteristics and health behavior factors, subjective health status, unmet medical care needs, moderate physical activity, sitting time, and drinking influenced the HRQOL. Therefore, in order to improve the HRQOL of adult patients with BPH, it is necessary to improve medical accessibility by strengthening primary care. In addition, it is necessary to increase the amount of activity in daily life through healthcare medical devices.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The current study aimed to investigate psychiatric consequences of obesity and the relationship between componenets of the metabolic syndrome and psychiatric disorders in children. Our second aim was to elucidate which of the anthropometric parameters or metabolic components were most strongly associated with psychiatric disorders. METHODS The study included 88 obese and overweight children with a body mass index (BMI) greater than 85th percentile. The patients were evaluated for psychiatric disorders by a single child and adolescent psychiatrist. Forty patients diagnosed with psychiatric disorders and 48 patients with normal psychiatric evaluation were compared in terms of anthropometric and metabolic parameters. BMI, BMI-standard deviation score and BMI percentile, waist circumference, waist to hip ratio, blood pressure and pubertal stage of all patients were recorded. Fasting serum glucose, insulin, lipid profile and homeostatic model assessments of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) were measured to evaluate the metabolic parameters. Serum and 24 hour urine cortisol levels were measured. RESULTS HOMA-IR in the group with psychiatric disorders was found to be significantly higher than in the group without psychiatric disorders (6.59±3.36 vs 5.21±2.67; p=0.035). Other anthropometric measurements and metabolic parameters were not significantly different between the two groups. CONCLUSION An understanding of the relationships between obesity related medical comorbidities and psychiatric pathologies is important to encourage patients and their families to make successful healthy lifestyle changes and for weight management in terms of appropriate treatment.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between occupational dysfunction and metabolic syndrome (MetS) and its component factors in community-dwelling Japanese adults (N = 1,514). Self-reported lifestyle behaviors, Classification and Assessment of Occupational Dysfunction (CAOD) scores, and metabolic traits were measured. CAOD levels were divided into tertiles (low, moderate, and high), and their associations with MetS and its components were evaluated through logistic regression analysis. The association of MetS with CAOD was demonstrated in the total number of individuals [OR = 1.92 (95% CI 1.17⁻3.17)] and in older individuals [OR = 1.90 (95% CI 1.04⁻3.46)]. The association of dyslipidemia and CAOD was evident for overweight individuals [OR = 2.08 (95% CI 1.17⁻3.68)]. A higher association of high blood pressure with CAOD was evidenced in younger individuals [OR = 2.02 (95% CI 1.05⁻3.89)] who belonged to the highest-CAOD-score group in comparison to those who registered the lowest-CAOD-score group. The evaluation of MetS and interventions related to its prevention may be more effective if the viewpoint of occupational dysfunction is taken into account.

Abstract
A 10-year longitudinal population-based study entitled Isfahan Cohort Study (ICS) was conducted in 2001-2011 with cardiovascular disease (CVD) as the primary outcome. We considered ICS as a master plan for a multi-level non-communicable disease (NCD) study named Isfahan Cohort Study 2 (ICS2). ICS2 is a multi-generation 10-year cohort study with new goals and outcomes that have been started in 2013, recruiting a sub-sample of ICS (n = 1487) and a new recruited sample (n = 1355) aged 35 years and over, all living in urban and rural areas of two counties in central Iran. In addition, 2500 of participant's adult children were selected randomly, as well as 1000 of their grandchildren. The aim of ICS2 is to detect the incidence of some NCDs including CVD, cancers, and diabetes and to identify the impact of their behavioral, metabolic, environmental, and genetic risk factors. In addition, studying lifestyle behaviors in three generations in a hierarchical manner of parents, their children and grandchildren in ICS2 will improve our knowledge on other determinants such as epigenetics of NCDs.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study examined 1) the cross-sectional relationships between symptoms of depression/anxiety and immunometabolic risk factors, and 2) whether these relationships might be explained in part by cardiac vagal activity. METHODS Data were drawn from the Adult Health and Behavior registries (n = 1785), comprised of community dwelling adults (52.8% women, aged 30-54). Depressive symptoms were measured with the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale (CES-D) and the Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II), and anxious symptoms with the Trait Anxiety scale of the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI-T). Immunometabolic risk factors included fasting levels of triglycerides, high-density lipoproteins, glucose, and insulin, as well as blood pressure, waist circumference, body mass index, C-reactive protein, and interleukin-6. Measures of cardiac autonomic activity were high- and low-frequency indicators of heart rate variability (HRV), standard deviation of normal-to-normal R-R intervals, and the mean of absolute and successive differences in R-R intervals. RESULTS Higher BDI-II scores, in contrast to CES-D and STAI-T scores, were associated with increased immunometabolic risk and decreased HRV, especially HRV likely reflecting cardiac vagal activity. Decreased HRV was also associated with increased immunometabolic risk. Structural equation models indicated that BDI-II scores may relate to immunometabolic risk via cardiac vagal activity (indirect effect: β = .012, p = .046) or to vagal activity via immunometabolic risk (indirect effect: β = -.015, p = .021). CONCLUSIONS Depressive symptoms, as measured by the BDI-II, but not anxious symptoms, were related to elevated levels of immunometabolic risk factors and low cardiac vagal activity. The latter may exhibit bidirectional influences on one another in a meditational framework. Future longitudinal, intervention, an nonhuman animal work is needed to elucidate the precise and mechanistic pathways linking depressive symptoms to immune, metabolic, and autonomic parameters of physiology that predispose to cardiovascular disease risk.

Abstract
It is debated whether carbohydrate restriction has metabolic advantage for its variable weight loss. Five-week-old male mice fed a high-fat diet and receiving a glycolytic inhibitor, 2-deoxyglucose, died within 9 days. They exhibited greater decreases in rectal temperature, appetite, and decline in body weight accompanied by increasing total cholesterol level than the other groups. This study suggests that carbohydrate is necessary for adequate physical and metabolic performance when lipid-rich diet is loaded.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Psychological disorders are considered as today's one of the most important public health problems all around the world. Another alarming condition, which attributed to cardiovascular disease (CVD) is metabolic syndrome (Mets). The aims of the current study were to explore (1) the prevalence of anxiety and depression in a large representative population of Iran, and (2) evaluate their possible association with MetS patients. METHOD Applying a randomized stratified-cluster approach, 9829 adults, aged 35-65 years, were recruited as part of the MASHAD study. Socio demographic, anthropometric and biochemical analyses were performed. Beck's anxiety inventory and Beck's depression inventory II were applied to assessment of the degree of anxiety and depression among the subjects. RESULTS The prevalence of MetS, anxiety and depression were 38.8%, 25% and 31.5%, respectively. The prevalence of these factors was significantly (P<0.05) higher in women, compared to men and subjects with MetS were significantly (P<0.05) associated with both anxiety and depression. Additionally, multivariate analysis after adjusting for potential confounders showed a significant relationship between MetS and anxiety (p=0.04). CONCLUSION Our data demonstrates the significant association of MetS components with anxiety and depression and high prevalence of these co-morbidities in adults, particularly in women.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Epidemiological studies have repeatedly investigated the association between anxiety and metabolic syndrome (MetS). However, the results have been inconsistent. We performed a meta-analysis of observational studies to summarize the evidence regarding the relation of anxiety and MetS risk. METHODS We performed a systematic literature search of all studies published in PubMed and EMBASE from its inception to June 2016. Cross-sectional and cohort studies that reported an association between the two conditions in adults were included. Data on prevalence, incidence, unadjusted or adjusted odds ratio (OR), and 95% CI were extracted or provided independently by the authors. Random effects model was used to report the pooled OR. The I2 statistic was used to assess heterogeneity. Egger's test and Begger's test were used to evaluate the publication bias. RESULTS The search yielded 18 cross-sectional studies and two cohort studies. The pooled finding from cross-sectional studies showed that anxiety had a significant positive association with MetS (OR 1.07, 95% CI 1.01-1.12), with moderate heterogeneity (I2=45.7%, P=0.018). Findings from two cohort studies indicated that the association between anxiety and MetS was insignificant. CONCLUSION Our results suggest that there is an association between anxiety and MetS. In individuals with MetS anxiety should be detected and managed. Further prospective studies are needed to explore the bidirectional association between anxiety and MetS.

Abstract
Objectives: to present currently available evidence to verify the association between
metabolic syndrome and quality of life. Method: Cochrane Library, EMBASE, Medline and LILACS databases were studied for all
studies investigating the association with metabolic syndrome and quality of life.
Two blinded reviewers extracted data and one more was chosen in case of doubt.
Results: a total of 30 studies were included, considering inclusion and exclusion criteria,
which involved 62.063 patients. Almost all studies suggested that metabolic
syndrome is significantly associated with impaired quality of life. Some, however,
found association only in women, or only if associated with depression or Body
Mass Index. Merely one study did not find association after adjusted for
confounding factors. Conclusion: although there are a few studies available about the relationship between
metabolic syndrome and quality of life, a growing body of evidence has shown
significant association between metabolic syndrome and the worsening of quality of
life. However, it is necessary to carry out further longitudinal studies to
confirm this association and verify whether this relationship is linear, or only
an association factor.

Abstract
BACKGROUND We have assessed the role of stress on compliance of patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) and hypertension (HTN) with taking prescribed medications and following dietary and exercise regimens. METHODS A total of 9544 individuals more than 19 years of age were selected from three counties in central Iran. The presence of DM and HTN were asked from participants. We defined treatment adherence (compliance) based on agreement of individual's self-report behavior with recommendations from a physician. RESULTS Awareness about DM and HTN was 82.6% and 49.9%, respectively. Multivariate analysis showed that odds ratio (OR) of high to low stress level was lower than one for both "usage of medication" and "following exercise regimen" in diabetics even after adjustment for either "age and sex" or "age, sex and education". In hypertensive patients, OR of high to low stress level was lower than one for "usage of medication" even after adjustment for either "age and sex" or "age, sex and education" and also lower than one for "following exercise regimen" only as crude index. CONCLUSION Cases with higher stress level had lower compliance for accepting either medication or exercise as a treatment option for their DM or HTN.

Abstract
Objective: To investigate the moderating effect of an increasing number of clustered metabolic syndrome (MetS) components on the association between MetS and depressive symptoms in a population-based cohort of older adults in Brazil. Methods: This analysis used data from the Bambuí Cohort Aging Study. Participants in this cross-sectional study comprised 1,469 community-dwelling older people aged ≥ 60 years. Analyses were performed to assess both the association between depressive symptoms and each individual MetS component and the association between depressive symptoms and clustering of an increasing number of MetS components. Results: High triglyceride level was the individual component that showed the strongest association with depressive symptoms (odds ratio [OR]: 1.47; 95% confidence intervals [95%CI] 1.19-1.81; p < 0.0001). Only the presence of three MetS components was associated with depressive symptoms (OR = 1.53; 95%CI 1.05-2.23; p = 0.025). No graded association was detected between increasing number of clustered MetS components and depressive symptoms. Conclusions: Increasing the number of MetS components did not impact the association with depressive symptoms. The association between high triglyceride level and depressive symptoms highlights the relevance of lipid metabolism abnormalities for the emergence of depressive symptoms in older adults.

Abstract
Various studies link hypertension with anxiety; however, it remains unclarified if such relations are present in the metabolic syndrome (MetS). We studied cross-sectionally the interrelations of self-reported anxiety (Spielberger STAI), and MetS components in MetS patients. We investigated a nationally sampled treatment cohort for MetS with familial Type 2 diabetes risk. N = 101 patients fulfilling International Diabetes Federation criteria for MetS participated. Both laboratory and nonlaboratory measures were included. Structural equation models (SEM) were adjusted. The final SEM had an R(2) = .998 with the obesity component linking to waist, BMI, and degree of adiposity, and the hypertension component linking to systolic blood pressure, pulse pressure, total cholesterol, and trait anxiety. For state anxiety, no significant regressive causal path could be estimated. SEM supports the assumption of an interaction of pulse pressure, systolic blood pressure, cholesterol metabolism, and high trait anxiety in the pathophysiology of hypertension in MetS.

Abstract
This research studied the effects of a lifestyle intervention on health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and metabolic risk factors in persons with psychosis, using a longitudinal intervention design with a matched reference sample. In participants in the intervention group, scores on the EQ-VAS, which measured HRQoL, improved from 57.6 to 63.3 (SD = 17.8) (p = 0.05), and HDL cholesterol concentration increased from 1.03 to 1.11 (0.19) mmol/l. (p = 0.02). There was no significant change in body weight among participants. The results of this study indicate that a lifestyle intervention based on group meetings improves HRQoL in patients with psychosis and provides small improvements in metabolic risk factors.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study sought to compare the association between health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and four body health types by gender. METHODS The study included 6217 men and 8243 women over 30 years of age chosen from a population-based survey. Participants were grouped by body mass index and metabolic abnormality into four types: metabolically healthy normal weight, metabolically abnormal but normal weight (MANW), metabolically healthy obesity (MHO), and metabolically abnormal obesity (MAO). HRQoL was measured using the EQ-5D health questionnaire. The outcomes encompassed five dimensions (mobility, self-care, usual activity, pain/discomfort, and anxiety/depression), and the impaired HRQoL dichotomized by the EQ-5D preference score. Complex sample multivariate binary logistic regression analyses were conducted to adjust for sociodemographic variables, lifestyle factors, and disease comorbidity. RESULTS Among men, those in the MANW group presented worse conditions on all dimensions and the impaired HRQoL compared to other men. However, no significant effect remained after adjusting for relevant covariates. For women, those in the MAO group had the most adversely affected HRQoL followed by those females in the MHO group. The domain of mobility and impaired HRQoL variable of the MAO and MHO groups remained significant when controlling for all covariates in the model. CONCLUSIONS The MANW is the least favorable condition of HRQoL for men, suggesting that metabolic health may associate with HRQoL more than obesity for males. In women, the MAO and MHO groups had the most adversely affected HRQoL, implying that MHO is not a favorable health condition and that obesity, in general, may be strongly associated with HRQoL in women.

Abstract
The present trial aimed to evaluate the effects of pioglitazone on the mental status of nondiabetic metabolic syndrome patients. From 145 patients screened, 104 eligible volunteers (57% female; age 20-70 years) were enrolled and randomly assigned to receive either pioglitazone (uptitrated to 30 mg/day; P = 53) or matching placebo (P = 51) for 24 weeks. Depression and anxiety were quantified using the hospital anxiety and depression scale and stress level using the general health questionnaire 12 at baseline, week 12, and endpoint. Homeostasis model assessment was used to estimate insulin resistance. At week 24, pioglitazone was superior in mitigating depression score (P = 0.011). In trend analysis, the effect of time (P < 0.001) and group (P = 0.023) as well as the time by group interaction (P = 0.032) on the mean depression score was considerable. In contrast, significant decrements in anxiety and stress levels (P < 0.001 and P = 0.012, resp.) were comparable between two groups. With respect to our findings, alterations in depression severity were not correlated with changes in insulin resistance level (P = 0.145). In conclusion, our findings suggest that pioglitazone might be able to improve mood in nondiabetic insulin resistant patients. Abstract
Major depression is associated with a 4-fold increased risk for premature death, largely accounted by cardiovascular disease (CVD). The relationship between depression and CVD is thought to be mediated by the so-called metabolic syndrome (MeS). Epidemiological studies have consistently demonstrated a co-occurrence of depression with MeS components, ie, visceral obesity, dyslipidemia, insulin resistance, and hypertension. Although the exact mechanisms linking MeS to depression are unclear, different hypotheses have been put forward. On the one hand, MeS could be the hallmark of the unhealthy lifestyle habits of depressed patients. On the other, MeS and depression might share common alterations of the stress system, including the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, the autonomic nervous system, the immune system, and platelet and endothelial function. Both the conditions induce a low grade chronic inflammatory state that, in turn, leads to increased oxidative and nitrosative (O&NS) damage of neurons, pancreatic cells, and endothelium. Recently, neurobiological research revealed that peripheral hormones, such as leptin and ghrelin, which are classically involved in homeostatic energy balance, may play a role in mood regulation. Metabolic risk should be routinely assessed in depressed patients and taken into account in therapeutic decisions. Alternative targets should be considered for innovative antidepressant agents, including cytokines and their receptors, intracellular inflammatory mediators, glucocorticoids receptors, O&NS pathways, and peripheral mediators.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Metabolic syndrome (MetS) and depression are considered important risk factors for diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Recent evidence suggests that depression can be an important predictor of MetS. Data on the association between anxiety and MetS remain mixed. In a large primary care based community sample we investigated an association of depressive and anxiety disorders and symptoms with MetS. METHODS A total of 1115 (51% men, mean age 62.0 ± 9.6 years) randomly selected individuals of 45 years and older were evaluated for: (i) MetS using the World Health Organization (WHO), National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel III (NCEP/ATP III) and International Diabetes Federation (IDF) criteria; (ii) current major depressive episode (MDE) and current generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), the Mini International Neuropsychiatric interview; (iii) lifetime MDE; and (iv) symptoms of depression and anxiety, the Hospital Anxiety and Depression scale (HADS). Socio-demographic characteristics (education, residence, marital status and social status) and medical histories (physical activity, smoking status, alcohol consumption and histories of myocardial infarction and stroke) were also evaluated. RESULTS After adjusting for socio-demographic status, medical histories and current GAD, current MDE and lifetime MDE were associated with greater prevalence of MetS according to the WHO criteria (OR=1.7, 95%CI [1.1-2.7] and OR=3.7, 95%CI [2.4-5.7], respectively, p ≤ 0.001). Lifetime MDE was also associated with MetS according to the IDF and NCEP/ATP III criteria. On the other hand, current GAD was not associated with MetS in multivariate regression models when adjusted for current MDE. Similar results were obtained when evaluating an association between depression/anxiety symptoms and MetS, since elevated depressive, but not anxiety, symptoms were independently associated with MetS. CONCLUSIONS Depressive, but not anxiety, disorders and symptoms are associated with greater prevalence rate of MetS. Assessment and management of MetS risk factors should be considered in depressed individuals.

Abstract
UNLABELLED Improved Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) is an alternative treatment goal for individuals with psychosis, who have up to two times greater prevalence of type 2 diabetes, hypertension and obesity than the general population. AIM to compare HRQoL in patients with psychosis, especially schizophrenia, with a reference sample and explore the relationship between HRQoL and metabolic risk factors in these patients. METHODS a prospective cohort study was carried out in specialized psychiatric outpatient departments in Sweden. The patients were invited consecutively. A prospective population-based study of public health in the south-east of Sweden served as reference group. Patients were assessed with psychiatric questionnaires that included Global Assessment of Functioning (GAF). Health-related quality of life was assessed using the questionnaire EQ5D, both for patients and the population, and several other health status outcomes were used. RESULTS At 73%, schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder were the most common diagnoses in the patient group. The results in patients (n=903) and population (n=7238) showed significant differences in lower EQ5D among patients. According to the definition by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), elevated blood pressure was the only metabolic risk associated with lower HRQoL in patients. Raised LDL-cholesterol levels were also significantly related to lower HRQoL. CONCLUSION patients suffering from psychosis had significantly lower HRQoL regarding all components in EQ5D, except for the pain/discomfort component. Almost half of the patient group met the criteria for metabolic syndrome. According to the IDF criteria, elevated blood pressure was the only metabolic risk factor that had an impact on HRQoL.

Abstract
Background. Metabolic syndrome (MetS) and psychological distress are hypothesized to have a bidirectional relationship. According to their high prevalence in most populations, appraisal of this theory would be of great clinical and research interest. Methods. Data were available as part of the Isfahan Healthy Heart Program (IHHP). A total of 9553 men and women aged ≥19 years from three counties in central Iran were selected. Measurements consisted of serologic tests, anthropometrics, and self-reported 12-item general health questionnaire. Logistic regression analysis was used to find the association between MetS, MetS components, and distress level. Results. The mean age of 9553 participants (50% male) was 38.7 ± 15.8 years. After adjusting for demographic factors, MetS (OR = 1.25, 95% CI: 1.01-1.37), central obesity (OR = 1.40, 95% CI: 1.15-1.49), and hypertension (OR = 1.55, 95% CI: 1.42-1.70) were associated with high distress level. However, after adding smoking status and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol to the adjustment factors, hypertension (OR = 1.79, 95% CI: 1.53-1.98) and central obesity (OR = 1.41, 95% CI: 1.17-1.55), but not the MetS, remained significantly associated with distress level. Conclusion. The presence of association between the MetS as well as its key components and high distress level signifies the importance of integrating psychological assessment and intervention in the standard management of MetS patients.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE We examined the relationship between metabolic syndrome (MetS) and impaired health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in non-Hispanic Whites (NHW), non-Hispanic Black (NHB), and Mexican-Americans (MA). METHODS Data (n=5170) from 2009-2010 NHANES were used. Subjects perceived poor overall health (POH), poor physical health (PPH), and poor mental health (PMH) status in the past 30 days were used as indices of impaired HRQoL. Race/ethnic-specific associations between MetS and indices of HRQoL were determined using prevalence odds ratios (POR) from logistic regression models. Statistical adjustments were made for age, sex, education, marital status, income and smoking. RESULTS Rates of POH, PPH and PMH in the past 30 days increased linearly with increased number of components of MetS in NHW, NHB and MA. MetS was associated with increased odds of PPH in NHW (POR=2.34; 95% CI=1.73-3.17) and MA (POR=1.65; 95% CI=1.09-2.50); increased odds of PPH in NHW (POR=1.65; 95% CI=1.18-2.31), NHB (POR=1.83; 95% CI=1.01-3.35), and MA (POR=1.67; 95% CI=1.09-2.83); and increased odds of PMH in NHW (POR=1.50; 95% CI=1.08-2.08), NHB (POR=2.28; 95% CI=1.29-4.01), and MA (POR=1.44; 95% CI=0.80-2.59). Upon adjustment for other independent variables, smoking and lack of education were found associated with increased odds of impaired HRQoL. CONCLUSIONS MetS is associated with POH, PPH, and PMH in American adults. From clinical standpoint, this study further suggests that HRQoL should be considered in the management of subjects with MetS. Robust public health programs designed to reduce the prevalence of MetS may help in reducing impaired HRQoL, including POH, PPH, and PMH in American adults who have MetS.
