Abstract
Malvaviscus arboreus is used in traditional Mexican medicine to treat gastrointestinal diseases. Therefore, a mixture of Kaempferol-O-sambubioside and Kaempferol-O-sophoroside (MaSS) isolated from flowers of this species was tested as a preventive treatment on gastric lesions induced with ethanol in rats. MaSS was obtained by chromatographic methods and administered by oral pathway to male Sprague Dawley rats with ethanol-induced gastric lesions. Pretreatment with MaSS at doses of 30, 90, 120, and 180 mg/kg significantly prevents gastric lesions, inhibits the increment in relative stomach weight (%) in gastric IL-6, and also provokes an increment of IL-10 concentration and catalase activity. Finally, MaSS prevented edema in the mucosa and submucosa and diminished microscopic gastric lesions provoked by ethanol.

Abstract
The current study aimed to determine the protective effect of P. reticulatus on ethanol-induced gastric ulcer. For this purpose, thirty-six Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into six groups. The first group served as normal control, while, in other five groups, absolute ethanol was used to induce gastric ulcer. Group II served as a diseased group, while groups III, IV, and V were treated with methanol extract, ethyl acetate fraction, and n-hexane fraction, respectively, in a dose of 400 mg/kg bodyweight. Group VI was given omeprazole in a dose 20 mg/kg bodyweight. The stomachs were removed, ulcer score was evaluated, and histopathological examination of gastric lumen was conducted. Total acidity and pH values were determined in gastric juice. TNF-α and IL-8 mRNA expressions levels were determined using the reverse transcription real-time PCR method. The data indicated that P. reticulatus protected against gastric ulcer, which was evident by attenuation of ulcer score. The pretreatment with P. reticulatus raised the gastric pH and improved all evaluated histopathological parameters such as ulcer score, erosion score, hemorrhage score, fibrinoid necrosis score, inflammatory infiltrate score, and edema score. P. reticulatus significantly reduced mRNA expression levels of TNF-α and IL-8. In conclusion, P. reticulatus possess antiulcer property which might be attributed to downregulation of TNF-α and IL-8 expression levels.

Abstract
Inulae Flos, the flower of Inula britannica L., is used as a dietary supplement, beverage, and medicine in East Asia. In this study, we evaluated the gastroprotective effects of Inulae Flos extract (IFE) against gastric mucosal lesions induced by hydrochloric acid (HCl)/ethanol in rats and explored its potential mechanisms by measuring antioxidant enzyme activity, mucus secretion, and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) levels. Pretreatment with IFE at doses of 100 and 300 mg/kg significantly inhibited gastric lesions in HCl/ethanol-treated rats. IFE increased the activities of superoxide dismutase and catalase and the levels of glutathione and PGE2 in gastric tissues. The administration of IFE also significantly increased the gastric wall mucus contents in HCl/ethanol-induced gastric lesions. These findings suggest that IFE has gastroprotective effects against HCl/ethanol-induced gastric lesions and exerts these effects through increased antioxidant levels and gastric mucus secretion. Inulae Flos may be a promising agent for the prevention and treatment of gastritis and gastric ulcers.

Abstract
Peptic ulcers are characterized by erosions on the mucosa of the gastrointestinal tract that may reach the muscle layer. Their etiology is multifactorial and occurs when the balance between offensive and protective factors of the mucosa is disturbed. Peptic ulcers represent a global health problem, affecting millions of people worldwide and showing high rates of recurrence. Helicobacter pylori infection and the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are one of the most important predisposing factors for the development of peptic ulcers. Therefore, new approaches to complementary treatments are needed to prevent the development of ulcers and their recurrence. Natural products such as medicinal plants and their isolated compounds have been widely used in experimental models of peptic ulcers. Flavonoids are among the molecules of greatest interest in biological assays due to their anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. The present study is a literature review of flavonoids that have been reported to show peptic ulcer activity in experimental models. Studies published from January 2010 to January 2020 were selected from reference databases. This review refers to a collection of flavonoids with antiulcer activity in vivo and in vitro models.

Abstract
Gastric ulcer is a widespread inflammatory disease with high socio-economic burden. C-phycocyanin is one of the active constituents of Spirulina microalgae, and although it is well known for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, its protective effects against gastric ulcer have not yet been identified. High-mobility group box 1 (HMGB1) is a nuclear protein that, once secreted extracellularly, initiates several inflammatory reactions, and it is involved in the pathogenesis of gastric ulcer. The aim of the present study was to investigate the anti-inflammatory and anti-ulcerogenic effects of C-phycocyanin against ethanol-induced gastric ulcer targeting HMGB1/NLRP3/NF-κB pathway. Ulcer induction showed increase in HMGB1 expression through activation of nucleotide-binding domain and leucine-rich repeat-containing protein 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome and nuclear factor kappa p65 (NF-κB p65). Moreover, oxidative stress and inflammatory markers were elevated in the ulcer-treated group compared to the normal control group. However, pre-treatment with C-phycocyanin significantly reduced HMGB1 expression via suppression of NLRP3/NF-κB, oxidative markers, IL-1β, tumour necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and ulcer index value. These results were consistent with histopathological and immunohistochemistry examination. Thus, C-phycocyanin is a potential therapeutic strategy with anti-inflammatory and anti-ulcerogenic effects against ethanol-induced gastric ulcer.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The cure rate of Helicobacter pylori (HP)-positive peptic ulcer has appeared to downward trend, and the resistance of the ulcer relapse has become a hot issue. METHODS Hematoxylin and eosin staining was used to detect the repair of the damaged tissues in patients after treatment with the Chuyou Yuyang granule (CYYY). Elisa was used to analyze the expression of cytokine interleukin 18 (IL-18) and tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α) in the patients' serum. Western blot analysis was used to explore the mechanism of the CYYY. Reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) was used to detect the expression of microRNA-155a (miR-155a) and miR-146a in the blood of the patients and to confirm whether CYYY could cure peptic ulcer through regulation of miR-155a and miR-146a. RESULTS The damaged gastric mucosal tissues of ulcer patients were significantly repaired by treating with CYYY. The pro-inflammatory cytokine IL18 and TNF-α were notably repressed after treating with CYYY. In addition, CYYY played a key role in regulation of the Toll-like receptor (TLR4)/nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) signal pathway and the expression of miR-155a and miR-146a. CONCLUSION CYYY was a highly effective therapeutic method for peptic ulcer patients by inhibiting the activation of the TLR4/NF-κB signal pathway and suppressing the expression of miR-155a and miR-146a.

Abstract
Oxyresveratrol, an active ingredient of Artocarpus lakoocha, is known to possess anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory properties. Current study investigates the immunomodulatory effect of oxyresveratrol in mouse model of ethanol-induced ulcer. Anti-ulcer effect was determined using histopathological evaluation (H&E staining) and different tests like, gastric ulcer scoring, ulcer index, total acid secretion, and gastric pH. The mRNA expression levels of interleukin-6 (IL-6), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), nuclear factor-kappaB (NF-ĸB), cyclooxygenase-1 (COX-1), cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) and trefoil factor 2 (TFF-2) were evaluated using reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). The data showed marked percentage inhibition of erosion, hemorrhage, fibrinoid necrosis, inflammatory infiltrate, and ulcer in low (30 mg/kg b.w.) and high dose (50 mg/kg b.w.) groups of oxyresveratrol. Treatment with oxyresveratrol inhibited ulcer score and ulcer index as compared with disease control group. Oxyresveratrol significantly increased gastric pH (P < 0.001) and attenuated total acid (P < 0.001) secretion. RT-PCR analysis showed significant suppression in the mRNA expression levels of IL-6 (P < 0.001), TNF-α (P < 0.01), NF-ĸB (P < 0.001), and COX-2 (P < 0.05) in oxyresveratrol treated groups, while COX-1 expression levels were found unaltered. Treatment with oxyresveratrol significantly elevated (P < 0.01) the expression levels of cytoprotective TFF-2 levels. Similar Immunomodulatory and anti-ulcer effects were found with ranitidine treatment, which was used as a reference drug. In conclusion, oxyresveratrol possess significant anti-ulcer property which might be attributed to attenuated expression levels of IL-6, TNF-α, NF-ĸB, and COX-2 and elevated expression levels of TFF-2.

Abstract
Phycobiliproteins of Arthrospira (Spirulina) maxima have attracted attention because of their potential therapeutic antioxidant properties. The aim of this study was to assess the possible antiulcerogenic activity of these phycobiliproteins (ExPhy) against ethanol-induced gastric ulcers in rats. To explore the possible mechanisms of action, we examined antioxidant defense enzymes (e.g., catalase, superoxide dismutase, and glutathione peroxidase), as well as the level of lipid peroxidation (MDA) and the histopathological changes in the gastric mucosa. Intragastric administration of ExPhy (100, 200, and 400 mg/kg body weight) significantly lowered the ulcer index value compared to the ulcer control group (p < 0.05). The greatest protection was provided by the concentration of 400 mg/kg. The histological study supported the observed gastroprotective activity of ExPhy, showing a reduced inflammatory response. Moreover, the alcohol-induced decrease in stomach antioxidant enzyme activity found in the ulcer control group was prevented by ExPhy pretreatment. Furthermore, ExPhy reversed the ethanol-induced increase in lipid peroxidation. In summary, the antiulcerogenic potential of ExPhy may be due, at least in part, to its anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory effects.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Madhuca indica J. F. Gmel. (Sapotaceae) has shown antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, anti-diabetic and hepatoprotective potential. It has been traditionally used as laxative, tonic, anti-burn, anti-earthworm, wound healing and headache. AIM OF THE STUDY To investigate the efficacy and possible mechanism of Madhuca indica J. F. Gmel. leaves methanolic extract (MI-ALC) and its isolated chloroform fraction (D3) against experimental induced gastric ulcers. MATERIALS AND METHODS D3 was isolated from MI-ALC, well characterized (HPTLC, FT-IR, (1)H-NMR and LC-MS) and evaluated for its gastroprotective activity by using acetic acid induced ulcer in male Wistar rats (150-200g). D3 (2.5, 5 and 10mg/kg, p.o.) were administered for the period of 14 days. At the end of treatment, rats were sacrificed to collect the stomach sample for evaluation of antioxidant (SOD, GSH, and MDA) enzyme, oxido-inflammatory (TNF-α, IL-1, iNOs) and prostaglandins (COX-II) markers by using RT-PCR. RESULTS The structure and molecular weight (MW) of the isolated compound (D3) were confirmed by 1D and 2D spectral data and characterized as 3,5,7,3',4'-Pentahydroxy flavone with MW C15H10O7. Administration of 3,5,7,3',4'-Pentahydroxy flavone (5 and 10mg/kg) significantly and dose-dependently inhibited (P<0.01 and P<0.001) acetic acid induced an alteration in the antioxidant enzyme. It also significantly and dose-dependently down-regulated gastric oxido-inflammatory and prostaglandins markers. Histopathological aberration induced in the stomach also attenuated by 3,5,7,3',4'-Pentahydroxy flavone treatment. CONCLUSION Finding of present investigation suggests that MI-ALC possessed potent antiulcer activity due to the presence of 3,5,7,3',4'-Pentahydroxy flavone via its oxido-inflammatory and prostaglandins modulatory potential.
