Abstract
Radix Astragali (Huangqi in Chinese, HQ) is a commonly used Chinese herbal medicine for thousands of years. In this study, A classic prescription Huangqi Jianzhong tang (HQJZ) was selected to evaluate the important effect of HQ on rats with chronic atrophic gastritis (CAG) from the perspective of intestinal flora in cecal contents samples. Traditional pharmacological indicators, including weight change, pathological examination and biochemical indicators showed that HQ exerted favorable contribution to HQJZ against CAG, where the efficiencies of HQ and HQJZ were better than HY (HQJZ prepared without HQ). An accurate strategy was adopted to screen out the differential metabolites in the metabolomis analysis of intestinal flora in cecal contents samples based on the optimal screening factors, including VIP (importance of variables in projection), FC (fold change), AUROC (area under the receiver operating characteristic curve) and -ln(p-value), which were evaluated based on their interpreting, grouping, and predicting abilities of the performed orthogonal partial least-squares-discriminate analysis (OPLS-DA) models. Ten altered differential metabolites were obtained and associated with the intestinal flora, which HQ exerted the important metabolic contributions to HQJZ. The efficacy on the diversity of intestinal flora and their correlations with the altered metabolites further showed the important role of HQ in HQJZ composition. This work provided valuable approach for looking for potential biomarkers associated with metabolomics research with more accuracy, and provided new insights into the mechanisms to explain the efficacy of HQ contributing to HQJZ formula.

Abstract
Osteoarthritis (OA) remains a chronic incurable condition, presenting substantial challenges in treatment. This study explores a novel strategy by investigating the concurrent use of cuminaldehyde, a natural compound, with indomethacin in animal models of MIA-induced OA. Our results demonstrate that the co-administration of cuminaldehyde and indomethacin does indeed produce a superior effect when compared to these compounds individually, significantly enhancing therapeutic outcomes. This effect is evidenced by a marked reduction in pro-inflammatory cytokines IL-6 and IFN-γ, alongside a significant increase in the anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10, compared to treatments with each compound alone. Radiographic analyses further confirm the preservation of joint integrity and a reduction in osteoarthritic damage, highlighting the association's efficacy in cartilage-reducing damage. These findings suggests that the association of cuminaldehyde and indomethacin not only slows OA progression but also offers enhanced cartilage-reducing damage and fosters the production of protective cytokines. This study underscores the potential benefits of integrating natural products with pharmaceuticals in OA management and stresses the importance of further research to fully understand the mechanisms underlying the observed potentiated effects.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Huangqi (Radix Astragali) is a natural medicine with a wide range of uses. The research related to Huangqi is getting hotter and the number of publications is gradually increasing. This study aims to explore the current status and emerging trends of Huangqi-related research. METHOD Huangqi-related literature was systemically obtained from the Web of Science database. The CiteSpace, VOSviewer, and, R package "Bibliometrix" tools were used to analyze the number of publications, countries, research institutions, journals, authors, keywords, references, and trends. RESULTS A total of 2255 papers were retrieved for analysis. These papers were written by 11,247 authors from 1927 institutions in 71 countries, published in 570 journals, and cited 73,534 references from 11,553 journals. From 1999 to 2022, the number of publications gradually increased. China was the country with the highest number of publications. The most prolific institution was Shanghai University of Chinese Medicine. Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine was the journal publishing the most Huangqi-related literature. Dr Karl Wah Keung Tsim was the authors with the most output publications. The Review, entitle "Review of the Botanical Characteristics, Phytochemistry, and Pharmacology of Astragalus membranaceous (Huangqi)," was the reference being cited most frequently. The major keywords were apoptosis, oxidative stress, and inflammation. Gut microbiota and epithelial-mesenchymal transitions were new research hotspots in recent years. CONCLUSION This study used quantitative and visual analysis of Huangqi to provide insights into the research priorities, frontier research hotspots, and future research trends in this field.

Abstract
Huangqi Jianzhong Tang (HQJZ) is effective for treating chronic atrophic gastritis (CAG). The present study was carried out to reveal the mechanism of HQJZ in CAG rats. The metabolism and microbial composition of the cecal contents in CAG rats were analyzed through the integration of an untargeted metabolomic approach using ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with the quadrupole-time of flight mass spectrometry (UHPLC-QTOF-MS) and 16S rRNA gene sequencing, respectively. Finally, MetOrigin analyses were performed to explore the relationship between differential metabolites and intestinal flora. The results showed that HQJZ could significantly regulate metabolic disorders, especially conjugated acid metabolites. 16S rRNA gene sequencing analysis illustrated that HQJZ decreased the abundance of Acetobacter, Desulfovibrio, Escherichia, and Shigella. MetOrigin metabolite traceability analysis showed that the six bile acids associated with HQJZ efficacy included three bacteria-host cometabolites, which were involved in the primary bile acid biosynthesis pathway. Research presented here confirmed that conjugated bile acid metabolism was key to the treatment of CAG by HQJZ and correlates strongly with Bacteroides acidifaciens and Prevotella copri. These findings provide new insights into the mechanisms to explain the efficacy of HQJZ.

Abstract
Chronic gastritis (CG) is a persistent inflammation of the gastric mucosa that can cause uncomfortable symptoms in patients. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has been widely used to treat CG due to its precise efficacy, minimal side effects, and holistic approach. Clinical studies have confirmed the effectiveness of TCM in treating CG, although the mechanisms underlying this treatment have not yet been fully elucidated. In this review, we summarized the clinical research and mechanisms of TCM used to treat CG. Studies have shown that TCM mechanisms for CG treatment include H. pylori eradication, anti-inflammatory effects, immune modulation, regulation of gastric mucosal cell proliferation, apoptosis, and autophagy levels.

Abstract
Hydrogels are broadly employed in wound healing applications due to their high water content and tissue-mimicking mechanical properties. Healing is hindered by infection in many types of wound, including Crohn's fistulas, tunneling wounds that form between different portions of the digestive system in Crohn's disease patients. Owing to the rise of drug-resistant infections, alternate approaches are required to treat wound infections beyond traditional antibiotics. To address this clinical need, we designed a water-responsive shape memory polymer (SMP) hydrogel, with natural antimicrobials in the form of phenolic acids (PAs), for potential use in wound filling and healing. The shape memory properties could allow for implantation in a low-profile shape, followed by expansion and would filling, while the PAs provide localized delivery of antimicrobials. Here, we developed a urethane-crosslinked poly(vinyl alcohol) hydrogel with cinnamic (CA), p-coumaric (PCA), and caffeic (Ca-A) acid chemically or physically incorporated at varied concentrations. We examined the effects of incorporated PAs on antimicrobial, mechanical, and shape memory properties, and on cell viability. Materials with physically incorporated PAs showed improved antibacterial properties with lower biofilm formation on hydrogel surfaces. Both modulus and elongation at break could be increased simultaneously in hydrogels after both forms of PA incorporation. Cellular response in terms of initial viability and growth over time varied based on PA structure and concentration. Shape memory properties were not negatively affected by PA incorporation. These PA-containing hydrogels with antimicrobial properties could provide a new option for wound filling, infection control, and healing. Furthermore, PA content and structure provide novel tools for tuning material properties independently of network chemistry, which could be harnessed in a range of materials systems and biomedical applications.

Abstract
Huangqi Jianzhong Tang (HQJZ), a famous traditional Chinese medicine formula, is widely used in the treatment of gastrointestinal diseases in China. In this study, an ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with quadrupole-Exactive mass spectrometry was used to identify the metabolites in rat urine and feces after oral administration of HQJZ coupled with Compound Discover 3.0 software. The possible metabolic pathways were calculated and deduced based on 71 previous detected prototype compounds. As results, 88 compounds were identified in urine and feces, respectively. In urine sample, we identified 20 prototype compounds and 68 related metabolites. Meanwhile, a total of 21 prototype compounds and 67 related metabolites were identified in feces. Among them, flavonoids and saponins were the main ingredients in vivo. Further, we also speculated that HQJZ experienced oxidation, reduction, acetylation, methylation and glucuronic acid reaction in urine and feces. This study established a reliable method for the detection of prototype components and metabolites of traditional Chinese medicines, which would provide helpful information for further research into the active substances of HQJZ.

Abstract
Objective The purpose of this study was to assess abdominal and diaphragmatic mobility in adults with chronic gastritis compared with healthy individuals and to analyze the impact of chronic gastritis on musculoskeletal signs and symptoms of the cervical and thoracic spine. Methods This was a cross-sectional study conducted by the physiotherapy department at the Universidade Federal de Pernambuco in Brazil. Fifty-seven individuals participated, 28 with chronic gastritis (gastritis group [GG]) and 29 healthy individuals (control group [CG]). We assessed the following: restricted abdominal mobility in the transverse, coronal, and sagittal planes; diaphragmatic mobility; restricted cervical vertebral segmental mobility; restricted thoracic vertebral segmental mobility; and pain on palpation, asymmetry, and density and texture of the soft tissues on the cervical and thoracic spine. The measure of diaphragmatic mobility was assessed with ultrasound imaging. The Fisher exact and χ2 tests were applied to compare the groups (GG and CG) in relation to the restricted mobility of the abdominal tissues near the stomach on all planes and diaphragm, and the independent samples t test to compare the mobility measurements of the diaphragm. A significance level of 5% was considered for all tests. Results Restricted abdominal mobility in all directions (P < .05) was greater in GG when compared with CG except for the counterclockwise direction (P = .09). In GG, 93% of the individuals presented restricted diaphragmatic mobility, with a mean mobility of 3.1 ± 1.9 cm, and in the CG, 36.8% with a mean of 6.9 + 1.7 cm (P < .001). The GG presented a higher occurrence of restricted rotation and lateral glide mobility of the cervical vertebrae, pain to palpation, and density and texture dysfunction of the adjacent tissues when compared with CG (P < .05). In the thoracic region, there was no difference between GG and CG regarding musculoskeletal signs and symptoms. Conclusion Individuals with chronic gastritis presented greater abdominal restriction and lower diaphragmatic mobility, in addition to a higher occurrence of musculoskeletal dysfunction in the cervical spine when compared with healthy individuals.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In this study, Chinese herbal compound prescriptions combined with Chinese medicine powder were evaluated for the treatment of chronic atrophic gastritis with erosion. METHODS This multi-center, randomized, positive drug control clinical trial randomly assigned 216 patients with chronic atrophic gastritis with erosion to three groups: (1) control group: aluminum plus magnesium suspension thrice per day for 4 weeks; (2) test group 1: Chinese herbal compound prescriptions twice a day plus Sanqi (Panax notoginseng) powder twice a day for 4 weeks; (3) test group 2: Chinese herbal compound prescriptions twice a day plus Sanqi (Panax notoginseng) powder and Zhebeimu (Fritillaria thunbergii Miq.) powder twice a day for 4 weeks. The primary endpoint (improvement of gastric mucosal erosion; improvement of gastric mucosal pathology) and secondary endpoints (improvement of clinical symptoms scores; improvement of the patient-reported outcome [PRO] instrument for chronic gastrointestinal diseases) were assessed using endoscopy at week 4 following the treatment. Drug-related adverse events (AEs) and adverse drug reactions (ADRs) were also compared. RESULTS The final analysis included 202 patients (control group, 63; test group 1, 69; test group 2, 70). At week 4, using within-group comparison, gastric mucosal erosion improved in each group following treatment with a significant difference (P < 0.05); there were no statistically significant differences in gastric mucosal erosion scores among the groups after treatment (P > 0.05); in terms of improvement of gastric mucosal erosion, the efficacy rate of the control group was 69.12%, the efficacy rate of the test group 1 was 73.24%, and the efficacy rate of the test group 2 was 69.01% and efficacy rate among the groups was not statistically significant (P > 0.05). As determined by acute inflammation, chronic inflammation, atrophy, intestinal metaplasia, and dysplasia, the pathological score (total score and the highest score) did not differ statistically among groups following treatment (P > 0.05); within the control group, the total scores of acute inflammation, chronic inflammation, atrophy, and intestinal metaplasia were significantly decreased (P < 0.05), but there was no significant improvement in dysplasia (P > 0.05); in the test group 1, chronic inflammation, atrophy, and intestinal metaplasia and dysplasia scores were significantly decreased (P < 0.05), but acute inflammation did not improve (P > 0.05); there was a significant reduction in the atrophy score in test group 2 (P < 0.05), but no improvement in the scores of acute inflammation, chronic inflammation, intestinal metaplasia, and dysplasia was observed (P > 0.05). Similarly, within the control group, the highest scores of acute inflammation, chronic inflammation, atrophy, and intestinal metaplasia were significantly decreased (P < 0.05), but there was no significant improvement in dysplasia (P > 0.05); there was a significant reduction in highest scores of atrophy, intestinal metaplasia, and dysplasia (P < 0.05) in test group 1, but the highest scores didn't not improve with acute inflammation and chronic inflammation (P > 0.05); there was a significant reduction in the highest atrophy score in test group 2 (P < 0.05), but no improvement in the highest scores of acute inflammation, chronic inflammation, intestinal metaplasia, and dysplasia was observed (P > 0.05). Compared to the control group, the main symptom scores and total symptom scores in the test groups were lower following treatment, with a statistically significant difference (P < 0.05); the analysis of covariance with center, erosion type, and group as factors was applied, and the comparison among the groups in dyspepsia, defecation, and total PRO instrument scores were statistically significant (P < 0.05). In the study period, AEs were reported in 3 (4.23%) patients in the test group 1 and 3 (4.41%) patients in the control group; ADRs were confirmed in 3 (4.23%) patients from the test group 1 and 2 (2.94%) from the control group. AEs and ADRs were not statistically significantly different among groups (AE, P = 0.2213; ADR, P = 0.2872). No serious AE or ADR was reported. CONCLUSIONS This study has shown that both aluminum plus magnesium suspension and Chinese herbal compound prescriptions together with Panax notoginseng powder are capable of improving gastric mucosal erosion and reducing gastric mucosal pathological scores, and there were no statistically significant differences among the groups in primary endpoints, indicating that Chinese herbal therapy can achieve similar efficacy than antacids in terms of primary outcomes. The aluminum plus magnesium suspension is comparable to Chinese herbal therapy in improving atrophy and intestinal metaplasia, and is inferior to Chinese herbal therapy in improving dysplasia. In addition, the Chinese herbal therapy significantly outperforms the aluminum plus magnesium suspension in improving symptoms. Therefore, the overall clinical outcome of Chinese herbal compound prescriptions together with Panax notoginseng powder based on TCM syndrome patterns in the treatment of erosive gastritis is superior to that of antacids. Abstract
Background There are 9 traditional Chinese medicines (TCMs) combined with standard quadruple (SQ) available for the treatment of Helicobacter pylori (Hp)-associated gastritis, but their relative efficacy and best options in clinical decision making are unknown due to a lack of high-quality head-to-head randomized controlled trials (RCTs). This study aimed to explore which formulas are the most effective and/or safest for Hp-associated gastritis. Methods We performed a search of electronic databases including PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, Embase, Chinese databases and South Korean database from inception to March 2022 to identify all relevant RCTs on the comparison between TCM combined with SQ and SQ for Hp-associated gastritis. Efficacy outcomes were the eradication rate of Hp and therapeutic response rate, and safety outcome was incidence of adverse reactions. Publication bias was assessed quantitatively using Egger's regression analysis and qualitatively using trim-and-fill method. Quality assessment was performed using Cochrane Risk of Bias, version 2 (ROB 2) tool. The Bayesian methods were applied to compare each treatment. Results A total of 55 trials with 6,187 patients were involved. The experimental group included 9 TCMs combined with SQ. The control group was SQ. The pair-wise meta-analysis demonstrated that compared with control group, 8 TCMs combined with SQ could statistically improve the eradication rate of Hp in patients with gastritis, 9 TCMs combined with SQ could significantly improve the therapeutic response rate. Additionally, Banxia Xiexin decoction combined with SQ (BXS) could statistically decrease the incidence of adverse reactions. The network meta-analysis results showed that BXS, Xiangsha Liujunzi combined with SQ (XSS), and Huangqi Jianzhong decoction combined with SQ (HQS) was the best measures to effectively eradicate Hp, enhance therapeutic effect, and decrease adverse reactions, respectively. The results of trim-and-fill method indicated that the results were stable and less affected by publication bias. Conclusions Compared with SQ, TCM combined with SQ generally has a better clinical effect and higher safety in patients with Hp-associated gastritis. BXS, XSS, and HQS are recommended based on the patient's condition and needs in clinical practice. Further high-quality double-blinded RCTs are warranted to validate the conclusions.

Abstract
Background: Infection with Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) can cause chronic gastritis and other digestive tract diseases, and represents a public health concern. Current anti-H. pylori treatment can result in antibiotic resistance and other adverse reactions. Huangqi Jianzhong decoction (HQJZD) is a prescription form of traditional Chinese medicine for chronic gastritis that increases probiotics and inhibits H. pylori. In this study, its anti-bacterial activity against H. pylori receives a preliminary evaluation, and a pharmacology analysis is performed to predict its underlying mechanisms. Methods: Human GES-1 cells are divided into a blank control group, a model group, a HQJZD low-dose (2.08 mg·mL−1), a high-dose group (4.16 mg·mL−1), and a positive control group (amoxicillin, 5 μg·mL−1). After culture, the CCK-8 method is used to detect cell viability; flow cytometry is used to detect cell apoptosis rate; and RT-qPCR is used to detect the expression of mRNA virulence factors, including HpPrtC, OPiA, IceA1, and BabA2. Network pharmacology analysis and molecular docking were performed to explore the mechanisms of HQJZD in treating H. pylori gastritis, based on its anti-H. pylori infection effect. Results: We noted lower cell survival rates in the model group, but higher apoptosis rates and mRNA expressions of HpPrtC, OPiA, IceA1, and BabA2 than in the control group (p < 0.05). Compared to the model group, the cell survival rate of each dosage group of Huangqi Jianzhong decoction and the positive control group increased significantly, while the apoptosis rate and the mRNA expressions of HpPrtC, OPiA, IceA1, and BabA2 were decreased significantly. The effect in each HQJZD group was dose-dependent (p < 0.05). Network pharmacological analysis involving 159 signaling pathways was used to screen 6 key active components of HQJZD and 102 potential target proteins for the treatment of H. pylori-related gastritis. The molecular docking results revealed that the 6 active compounds had a strong binding ability with the target proteins of ALB, IL-6, AKT1, IL-1B, and JUN. Conclusion: HQJZD effectively increases the proliferation rate of human GES-1 cells after infection, while reducing the level of apoptosis. The mechanism may be related to multiple components, multiple targets and pathways, which provides a scientific basis for further elucidating the mechanism of action, the pharmacodynamic material basis, and the clinical application of HQJZD against H. pylori infection.

Abstract
Huangqi Jianzhong Tang (HQJZ) is a famous traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) formula widely used in the treatment of gastrointestinal diseases in China. In this study, an ultra-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS) was used to study the pharmacokinetics of 12 prototypical components and one metabolite in HQJZ in normal and chronic atrophic gastritis (CAG) rats. As results, AUC(0-t) , AUC (0-∞) and Cmax of most flavonoids and flavonoid glycosides were decreased, and T1/2 and MRT(0-t) were significantly increased, which indicated that the absorption of drugs in disease was decreased less and longer in vivo. Then, the integrated pharmacokinetic study was carried out by using the pharmacokinetic parameter model integration of each component. The results showed that the absorption of drugs in vivo with disease was reduced, and the absorption speed of flavonoids and flavonoid glycosides was accelerated. This study would provide the basis for clinical medication safety of HQJZ.

Collagen is the most important structural protein and also a main component of extra-cellular matrix (ECM). It plays a role in tumor progression. Collagen can be regulated by altering it’s biosynthesis pathway through various signaling pathways, receptors and genes. Activity of cancer cells can also be regulated by other ECM components like metalloproteinases, hyaluronic acid, fibronectin and so on. Hypoxia is also one of the condition which leads to cancer progression by stimulating the expression of procollagen lysine as a collagen crosslinker, which increases the size of collagen fibres promoting cancer spread. The collagen content in cancerous cells leads to resistance in chemotherapy. So, to reduce this resistance, some of the collagen regulating therapies are introduced, which include inhibiting its biosynthesis, disturbing cancer cell signaling pathway, mediating ECM components and directly utilizing collagenase. This study is an effort to compile the strategies reported to control the collagen level and different collagen inhibitors reported so far. More research is needed in this area, growing understandings of collagen’s structural features and its role in cancer progression will aid in the advancement of newer chemotherapies.

Abstract
Organ fibrosis is a process in which cellular homeostasis is disrupted and extracellular matrix is excessively deposited. Fibrosis can lead to vital organ failure and there are no effective treatments yet. Although epithelial–mesenchymal transition (EMT) may be one of the key cellular mechanisms, the underlying mechanisms of fibrosis remain largely unknown. EMT is a cell phenotypic process in which epithelial cells lose their cell-to-cell adhesion and polarization, after which they acquire mesenchymal features such as infiltration and migration ability. Upon injurious stimulation in different organs, EMT can be triggered by multiple signaling pathways and is also regulated by epigenetic mechanisms. This narrative review summarizes the current understanding of the underlying mechanisms of EMT in fibrogenesis and discusses potential strategies for attenuating EMT to prevent and/or inhibit fibrosis. Despite better understanding the role of EMT in fibrosis development, targeting EMT and beyond in developing therapeutics to tackle fibrosis is challenging but likely feasible.

Abstract
Gastric cancer (GC) is the fifth most common type of cancer and the third leading cause of death due to cancer worldwide. The gastric mucosa often undergoes many years of precancerous lesions of gastric cancer (PLGC) stages before progressing to gastric malignancy. Unfortunately, there are no effective Western drugs for patients with PLGC. In recent years, traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has been proven effective in treating PLGC. Classical TCM formulas and chemical components isolated from some Chinese herbal medicines have been administered to treat PLGC, and the main advantage is their comprehensive intervention with multiple approaches and multiple targets. In this review, we focus on recent studies using TCM treatment for PLGC, including clinical observations and experimental research, with a focus on targets and mechanisms of drugs. This review provides some ideas and a theoretical basis for applying TCM to treat PLGC and prevent GC.

Abstract
As an independent medical system, the scientific value behind traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is gaining appreciation because of growing evidence about mechanisms and efficacy. The aim of this special issue is to introduce this ancient medicine to readers through the compiled research papers focusing on TCM. The papers in this issue cover many research fields such as TCM theory, traditional Chinese prescription, syndrome biomarkers, and acupuncture. In particular for acupuncture, the focus on the history of acupuncture, the importance of precise acupoint positioning, the effect of Fu's subcutaneous needling among patients with shoulder pain, and the effect of electroacupuncture on senile plaque and insulin signaling pathway in the olfactory bulb of transgenic mice. By combining, the papers in this issue and TCM papers published elsewhere provide scientific evidence to improve understanding this ancient Oriental form of medicine.

Abstract
Renal interstitial fibrosis (RIF) is a common pathological response in a broad range of prevalent chronic kidney diseases and ultimately leads to renal failure and death. Although RIF causes a high morbi-mortality worldwide, effective therapeutic drugs are urgently needed. Myofibroblasts are identified as the main effector during the process of RIF. Multiple types of cells, including fibroblasts, epithelial cells, endothelial cells, macrophages and pericytes, contribute to renal myofibroblasts origin, and lots of mediators, including signaling pathways (Transforming growth factor-β1, mammalian target of rapamycin and reactive oxygen species) and epigenetic modifications (Histone acetylation, microRNA and long non-coding RNA) are participated in renal myofibroblasts activation during renal fibrogenesis, suggesting that these mediators may be the promising targets for treating RIF. In addition, many small molecules show profound therapeutic effects on RIF by suppressing the origin and activation of renal myofibroblasts. Taken together, the review focuses on the mechanisms of the origin and activation of renal myofibroblasts in RIF and the small molecules against them improving RIF, which will provide a new insight for RIF therapy.

Abstract
Chronic atrophic gastritis (CAG) is well-known related with multiple pathogenic factors and normally therapies comprised by western or Chinese medicines. The present study was designed to identify the bacterial community characterized by 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing and determine the modulate affection of bacterial composition response western and Chinese medicine Qinghuayin (QHY) as well as antibiotic on model rats. The result shown the overall structure alteration of bacterial appeared under medicine intervened, antibiotic caused a marked depletion in bacterial diversity and richness. The enrichments of Firmicutes (85.1-90.7%) in antibiotic-free converts into Bacteroidetes (30.7-34.6%) in antibiotic-added model rat were demonstrated. Firmicutes as the most dominant phylum in antibiotic-free treatments and significantly decreased till 21.9-68.5% in antibiotic-added treatments. Especially QHY-treated rats showed highest RA of Firmicutes (90.7%) and the amelioration of CAG using QHY attributed by beneficial bacterial enrichment, especially Ruminococcus, Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium. In addition, alpha and beta diversity analysis also demonstrated the clear dispersion and aggregation that revealed the alteration and steady of bacterial community structures. In summary, QHY has potential application value in the treatment of CAG, which attributed to close relation with the modulatory of internal bacterial communities.

Abstract
Hypercholesterolemia has been found to be closely linked with a significant increase in both cancer incidence and mortality. However, the exact correlation between serum cholesterol levels and cancer has not been completely deciphered. Here we analyzed the effect of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol on prostate and pancreatic cancer cells. We noted that LDL induced a substantial STAT3 activation and JAK1, JAK2, Src activation in diverse prostate and pancreatic tumor cells. Moreover, LDL promoted cancer cell proliferation, migration, and invasion as well as upregulated the expression of diverse oncogenic gene products. However, deletion of LDL-activated STAT3 in LNCaP and PANC-1 cells and reduced LDL-induced cell viability. Simvastatin (SV) treatment also alleviated LDL-induced cell viability and migration ability in both the prostate and pancreatic tumor cells. These results demonstrate that LDL-induced STAT3 activation may exert a profound effect on the proliferation and survival of tumor cells.

Abstract
Huangqi Jianzhong Tang (HQJZT) is a traditional Chinese herbal formula consisting of seven different herbs: Radix Astragali, Radix Paeoniae Alba, Ramulus Cinnamomi, Fructus Jujubae, Glycyrrhizae Radix Et Rhizoma Praeparata Cum Melle, Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens, and Saccharum Granorum. The present study aims to evaluate the possible effects of HQJZT on cardiac function in acute myocardial infarction (AMI) and related mechanism. AMI model was established by ligation of the left anterior descending coronary artery followed by one-week HQJZT treatment. Survival rate was calculated. Rat heart function was assessed by heart performance analysis system. 5-Triphenyltetrazolium chloride (TTC) staining was used to observe myocardial infarct size. Terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated dUTP-biotin nick end labeling (TUNEL) staining and western blot were applied to evaluate tissue apoptotic level. Treatment with high dose of HQJZT improved cardiac function, reduced infarct size, number of apoptotic cells and expression of apoptotic proteins, Bax (a proapoptotic protein), and increased expression of antiapoptotic protein, Bcl2. However, enalapril (an angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor) treatment did not show marked improvement of these parameters. Our present data suggest that HQJZT has potential therapeutic effects to improve cardiac function by regulation of apoptotic signaling pathway.

Abstract
Huangqi Jianzhong Tang (HQJZ) is a representative prescription used for clinical treatment of chronic atrophic gastritis (CAG) in Chinese medicine. Our previous study had revealed that energy regulation was one of the important mechanisms of HQJZ action against CAG. In this study, ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with quadrupole-Exactive mass spectrometry (UHPLC-Q-Exactive MS) based metabonomics was used to find the potential mitochondrial biomarkers and metabolic pathways of HQJZ in CAG rats, which focused on a specific organelle (mitochondria) isolated from gastric tissue samples. A total of 16 biomarkers from CAG tissues were identified with 11 of these significantly regulated by HQJZ treatment. These biomarkers was mainly involved in glycine, serine, and threonine metabolism; aminoacyl-tRNA biosynthesis metabolism; and taurine and hypotaurine metabolism. Our results show that HQJZ could protect from CAG by altering the mitochondrial function. These findings deepen our understanding of the mitochondrial metabolic changes that occur with CAG and shine a light on the mechanism of HQJZ.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES As a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), Huangqi Jianzhong Tang (HQJZ) has a good efficacy in treating chronic atrophic gastritis (CAG). Our objective was to determine its mechanism based on the urine comprehensive metabolome. METHODS In the study, a metabolomic approach was applied to reveal the efficacy of HQJZ on the constructed CAG rats coupled with proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1 H NMR) and ultra-performance liquid chromatography/quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (UPLC-Q/TOF MS). KEY FINDINGS The results showed the regulatory effect of HQJZ on urinary metabolism disorder in CAG rats was similar to the positive drug teprenone. Nineteen and 16 potential biomarkers related to CAG were detected by NMR and UPLC-Q/TOF MS, respectively. Thirty-two urine metabolites were significantly regulated by HQJZ treatment. Combined with MetPA and partial least square regression analysis (PLS-RA), three metabolic pathways of valine, leucine and isoleucine, TCA cycle, and glycine, serine and threonine metabolism were the most relevant pathways for HQJZ treatment. CONCLUSIONS The main mechanism of HQJZ might be due to the balance of energy consumption, inflammatory inhibition, improvement of the immune system and oxidative stress on the constructed CAG rats. These findings provided comprehensive metabolic information of TCM by parallel measurements by LC-MS and NMR.

Abstract
A rapid, highly sensitive, and specific analytical method using ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography-triple quadruple MS was developed to quantitatively measure 18 chemical constituents in Huangqi Jianzhong Tang (HQJZ), a famous traditional Chinese medicine formula. Chromatographic separation was performed on a Waters ACQUITY UPLC HSS T3 column (2.1 mm × 100 mm, 1.8 μm) with a gradient mobile phase (A: 0.1% aqueous formic acid and B: acetonitrile) at a flow rate of 0.25 mL/min. The chromatographic peaks of 18 components were identified by comparing with the reference compounds. Multiple reaction monitoring was employed for quantitative analysis of the components. Seven batches of HQJZ samples were analyzed with a good linear regression relationship (R2 , .9978-.9993), precisions [relative standard deviation (RSD), 0.90%-3.60%], repeatability (RSD, 2.50%-4.00%), stability (RSD, 1.00%-4.00%), and recovery (96.10%-104.30%). Based on this established method, the present study offered a highly sensitive, specific, and rapid determination method for identification of 18 compounds, which greatly promoted the systemic quality control of HQJZ.

Within non-communicable diseases, chronic inflammatory conditions represent one of the biggest challenges for modern medicine. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has been practiced over centuries and has accumulated tremendous empirical knowledge on the treatment of such diseases. Huangqi Jianzhong Tang (HQJZT) is a famous TCM herbal formula composed of Radix Astragali, Ramulus Cinnamomi, Radix et Rhizoma Glycyrrhizae Praeparata cum Melle, Radix Paeoniae Alba, Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens, Fructus Jujubae and Saccharum Granorum (maltose), which has been used for the treatment of various chronic inflammatory gastrointestinal diseases. However, there is insufficient knowledge about its active constituents and the mechanisms responsible for its effects. The present study aimed at identifying constituents contributing to the bioactivity of HQJZT by combining in vitro cytokine production assays and LC-MS metabolomics techniques. From the HQJZT decoction as well as from its single herbal components, extracts of different polarities were prepared. Phytochemical composition of the extracts was analyzed by means of UPLC-QTOF-MS/MS. The inhibitory effects of the extracts on TNF-α, IL-1β and IFN-γ production were studied in U937 cells. Phytochemical and pharmacological bioactivity data were correlated by orthogonal projection to latent structures discriminant analysis (OPLS-DA) in order to identify those HQJZT constituents which may be relevant for the observed pharmacological activities. The investigations resulted in the identification of 16 HQJZT constituents, which are likely to contribute to the activities observed in U937 cells. Seven of them, namely calycosin, formononetin, astragaloside I, liquiritigenin, 18β-glycyrrhetinic acid, paeoniflorin and albiflorin were unambiguously identified. The predicted results were verified by testing these compounds in the same pharmacological assays as for the extracts. In conclusion, the anti-inflammatory activity of HQJZT could be substantiated by in vitro pharmacological screening, and the predicted activities of the OPLS-DA hits could be partially verified. Moreover, the benefits and limitations of MVDA for prediction pharmacologically active compounds contributing to the activity of a TCM mixture could be detected.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Huangqi Jianzhong Tang (HQJZ), a celebrated traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), is commonly used for treatment of chronic atrophic gastritis (CAG) in China. AIM OF THE STUDY We aimed to screen out the material basis of HQJZ against CAG. MATERIALS AND METHODS CAG rat model was constructed by alternant administrations of ammonia solution and sodium deoxycholate, and the hunger disorder method. Body weight, biochemical indexes and histopathological exam were used to evaluate the efficacy of HQJZ. 1H NMR-based metabonomics was employed to analyze the urine metabolic features of HQJZ deviated from CAG rats. SystemsDock analysis was utilized to explore the active compounds involved into the efficacy of HQJZ against CAG based on the targeted metabolic biomarkers. RESULTS The metabonomic results indicated that HQJZ could significantly improve 16 urinary perturbed metabolites in CAG rats, which were involved into the metabolism of energy and amino acids. And then 28 related proteins and genes were selected out to be the potential targets of HQJZ against CAG based on the six key metabolites closely correlating with biochemical indexes (α-ketoglutarate, valine, sarcosine, glycine, malonate and fumarate). 71 previous identified compounds were docked through systemsDock-aided molecular docking experiments. And the constructed herb-component-protein-metabolite interaction network (HCPMN) revealed the associations between the herbal formulae and CAG. At last, 51 compounds of them were screened as promising active constitutes for the inhibition of CAG, which could act on various targeted proteins. CONCLUSIONS he results showed that the approach integrating of metabonomics and systemsDock is a powerful tool to obtain the material basis and regulatory mechanism of TCM formula.

Abstract
Objective: This study aims to systematically evaluate the efficacy and safety of catgut implantation at acupoints (CIA) treating asthma, extracting data from the published clinical trials. Methods: The Cochrane Library, PubMed, Chinese Biomedical Database (CBM), CNKI, WANFANG and VIP databases were searched up to February 2017. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) involving CIA or CIA plus conventional medicine treatment (CMT) were selected with CMT as control. We assessed the methodological quality of RCTs using the Cochrane Handbook for Systematic Review of Interventions. The outcome data of trials were analyzed using RevMan5.3. Results: A total of 12 studies ([Formula: see text]) were included. Most of the included studies were assessed to have high risk of bias with low quality of methodology. CIA application significantly improved the overall therapeutic efficacy ([Formula: see text]) and pulmonary function (forced expiratory volume in 1[Formula: see text]s (FEV1) and FEV1%, [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text]) and reduced the overall scores of TCM symptoms ([Formula: see text]). Further, it significantly relieved several TCM symptoms including shortness of breath, chest distress and cough ([Formula: see text]). However, CIA only exerted a protective tendency for expectoration and wheezing without significant difference and had no effects on recurrence rate (all [Formula: see text]). Conclusions: CIA treatment could improve the overall efficacy and pulmonary function and relief several symptoms. However, the evidence remains weak. Rigorous and larger trials will be the basis of the effectiveness and long-term effects of CIA therapies.

Abstract
AIM To explore the correlation between serum vitamin B12 level and peripheral neuropathy in patients with chronic atrophic gastritis (CAG).
METHODS A total of 593 patients diagnosed with chronic gastritis by gastroscopy and pathological examination from September 2013 to September 2016 were selected for this study. The age of these patients ranged within 18- to 75-years-old. Blood pressure, height and weight were measured in each patient, and the body mass index value was calculated. Furthermore, gastric acid, serum gastrin, serum vitamin and serum creatinine tests were performed, and peripheral nerve conduction velocity and Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) were detected. In addition, the type of gastritis was determined by gastroscopy. The above factors were used as independent variables to analyze chronic gastritis with peripheral neuropathy and vitamin B12 deficiency risk factors, and to analyze the relationship between vitamin B12 levels and peripheral nerve conduction velocity. In addition, in the treatment of CAG on the basis of vitamin B12, patients with peripheral neuropathy were observed.
RESULTS Age, H. pylori infection, CAG, vitamin B9 and vitamin B12 were risk factors for the occurrence of peripheral nerve degeneration. Furthermore, CAG and H. pylori infection were risk factors for chronic gastritis associated with vitamin B12 deficiency. Serum vitamin B12 level was positively correlated with sensory nerve conduction velocity in the tibial nerve (R = 0.463). After vitamin B12 supplementation, patients with peripheral neuropathy improved.
CONCLUSION Serum vitamin B12 levels in patients with chronic gastritis significantly decreased, and the occurrence of peripheral neuropathy had a certain correlation. CAG and H. pylori infection are risk factors for vitamin B12 deficiency and peripheral neuropathy. When treating CAG, vitamin B12 supplementation can significantly reduce peripheral nervous system lesions. Therefore, the occurrence of peripheral neuropathy associated with vitamin B12 deficiency may be considered in patients with CAG. Furthermore, the timely supplementation of vitamin B12 during the clinical treatment of CAG can reduce or prevent peripheral nervous system lesions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Bronchial asthma is a chronic airway inflammatory disease which has three main pathological features: airway hyperresponsiveness (AHR), airway remodelling, and chronic inflammation. Acupuncture is known to be an effective integrative medical therapy that has been used in the treatment of several chronic diseases, including bronchial asthma. The aim of the current study was to evaluate the effects of acupuncture on inflammation and regulation of the IL-33/ST2 pathway in a mouse model of asthma. METHODS The murine asthma model was established by both injection and inhalation of ovalbumin (OVA). Within 24 hours of the last OVA challenge, lung function was assessed by measurement of the airway resistance (RL) and lung dynamic compliance (Cdyn). Pulmonary tissues were collected for the detection of pathological changes and mucus secretion. Serum levels of tumour necrosis factor α (TNF-α), interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-33 and sST2 (secreted ST2) were detected by ELISA. Th17 cell proportions and counts in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) were analysed by flow cytometry. RESULTS The results showed that AHR, chronic inflammation and mucus secretion were significantly suppressed by acupuncture treatment. RL decreased while Cdyn increased after acupuncture treatment. There was an apparent decrease in the serum concentrations of certain pro-inflammatory cytokines, such as TNF-α, IL-1β and IL-33, and an increase in sST2 level compared with untreated asthmatic mice. Acupuncture also reduced the CD4 +IL-17A+ cell proportion and counts in BALF. CONCLUSION Acupuncture effectively protects lung function and attenuates airway inflammation in the OVA-induced mouse model of asthma, which supports the role of acupuncture as a potential therapy in asthma treatment.

Abstract
Chronic atrophic gastritis (CAG) is a common digestive system disease, which belongs to a type of precancerous lesion of gastric cancer (PLGC). Modern medical research has shown that brain-gut peptides, such as ghrelin, gastrin, somatostatin, and motilin, play an important role in the pathogenesis of CAG and PLGC. In particular, brain-gut peptides can help to judge the traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) syndrome of CAG and thereby evaluate CAG progression and the therapeutic effect. Based on TCM theory and brain gut interaction, this paper discusses the regulatory effect of TCM intervention on brain-gut peptides in CAG, with an aim to provide a theoretical basis for TCM prevention and treatment of CAG.

Abstract
Objective This aim is to evaluate the effect of Sijunzi decoction (SJZD) treating chronic atrophic gastritis (CAG). Methods We performed searches in seven databases. The randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing SJZD with standard medical care or inactive intervention for CAG were enrolled. Combined therapy of SJZD plus conventional therapies compared with conventional therapies alone was also retrieved. The primary outcome included the incidence of gastric cancer and the improvement of atrophy, intestinal metaplasia, and dysplasia based on the gastroscopy and pathology. The secondary outcomes were Helicobacter pylori clearance rate, quality of life, and adverse event/adverse drug reaction. Results Six RCTs met the inclusion criteria. The research quality was low in the trials. For the overall effect rate, pooled analysis from 4 trials showed that modified SJZD plus conventional medications exhibited a significant improvement (OR = 4.86; 95% CI: 2.80 to 8.44; P < 0.00001) and without significant heterogeneity compared with the conventional medications alone. None reported the adverse effect. Conclusions Modified SJZD combined with conventional western medicines appears to have benefits for CAG. Due to the limited number and methodological flaw, the beneficial and harmful effects of SJZD for CAG could not be identified. More high-quality clinical trials are needed to confirm the results.
