Abstract
Background and Aims In recent years, the application of various light and laser devices in the treatment of different types of alopecia has been established. This systematic review aims to assess the efficacy and safety of laser therapy and phototherapy in cicatricial and non-cicatricial alopecia. Methods A comprehensive search was conducted on PubMed, Scopus, Science Direct, and Google Scholar. Articles were evaluated across four subgroups: alopecia areata, androgenic alopecia, telogen effluvium, and cicatricial alopecia. Included studies were published in English or Persian between January 2010 and September 2023, focusing on interventional, cohort, or case series research that achieved a minimum score of 75% on the EBL checklist. Exclusion criteria encompassed animal and in vitro studies, review articles, case reports, duplicated or irrelevant research, as well as studies that did not meet the designated EBL score. Editorial letters and case studies were also excluded. Results Initially, 965 records were collected, resulting in the inclusion of 58 studies in the final review: 26 on alopecia areata, 26 on androgenic alopecia, five on cicatricial alopecia, and one on telogen effluvium. Narrow-band ultraviolet B, 308-nm excimer laser, and psoralen ultraviolet A therapy showed varying effectiveness; specifically, the excimer laser was notably effective for patients with shorter disease duration. In androgenic alopecia, erbium-glass and thulium lasers effectively increased hair density but showed a gradual decline posttreatment. Low-level light/laser therapy also increased hair density and diameter and exhibited potential benefits when used alongside minoxidil, but did not significantly enhance outcomes in telogen effluvium treatment. Conclusion Light/laser therapy can serve as an additive treatment for cicatricial alopecia, particularly lichen planopilaris, but has limited efficacy in treating telogen effluvium. Overall, light/laser therapies exhibit a significant positive effect on increasing hair density and diameter across various alopecia types.

Abstract
Alopecia has emerged as a global concern, extending beyond the middle-aged and elderly population and increasingly affecting younger individuals. Despite its growing prevalence, the treatment options and effective drugs for alopecia remain limited due to the incomplete understanding of its underlying mechanisms. Therefore, it is urgent to explore the pathogenesis of alopecia and discover novel and safer therapeutic agents. This review provided an overview of the prevailing clinical disorders of alopecia, and the key pathways and targets involved in hair growth process. Additionally, it discusses FDA-approved drugs and clinical candidates for the treatment of alopecia, and explores small molecule compounds with anti-alopecia potential in the drug discovery phase. These endeavors are expected to provide researchers with valuable scientific insights and practical information for anti-alopecia drug discovery.

Abstract
Background Numerous studies have linked vitamin D deficiency (VDD) to the pathogenesis of various alopecia disorders. Objective This study aimed to investigate whether patients with alopecia are more likely to have VDD or lower vitamin D levels than controls, and the prevalence of VDD among patients with certain alopecia disorders. Methods Electronic searches were conducted using PubMed, Embase, Scopus, and Cochrane Library databases from the dates of their inception until September 2024. Studies that reported data allowing for the calculation of odds ratios, mean differences, or correlation coefficients related to vitamin D levels and alopecia were included, while studies without a confirmed diagnosis of alopecia or those involving patients taking vitamin D supplements were excluded. Results It was found that 51.94% of patients with alopecia areata (AA), 50.38% of patients with female pattern hair loss (FPHL), 47.38% of patients with male androgenic alopecia (MAGA), 53.51% of patients with telogen effluvium (TE), and 38.85% of patients with primary scarring alopecia had VDD. Compared to controls, AA patients had a pooled odds ratio (OR) of VDD of 2.84 (95% confidence interval: 1.89-4.26, I2 = 84.29%, p < 0.01) and a pooled unstandardized mean difference (UMD) of vitamin D levels of -8.20 (-10.28 - -6.12, I2 = 74.25%, p < 0.01) ng/mL. For FPHL patients, a pooled OR of VDD of 5.24 (1.50-18.33, I2 = 81.65%, p < 0.01) and a pooled UMD of vitamin D levels of -15.67 (-24.55 - -6.79, I2 = 91.60%, p < 0.01) ng/mL were found. However, for MAGA, a pooled VDD OR of 4.42 (0.53-36.61, I2 = 88.40%, p < 0.01), and a pooled UMD of vitamin D levels of -2.19 ng/mL (-4.07 - -0.31 ng/mL, I2 = 7.64%, p = 0.37) were found. For TE patients, pooled UMD of vitamin D levels of -5.71 (-10.10 - -1.32) ng/mL were found. Conclusion People with alopecia frequently have VDD; however, only in patients with AA or FPHL was the association of VDD and decreased vitamin D levels statistically significant compared to control. The findings indicate screening for vitamin D could benefit patients with AA or FPHL, potentially addressing vitamin D deficiency. Further study on vitamin D supplementation as a treatment for alopecia is recommended.

Abstract
Primary cicatricial alopecia (PCA) is a rare, scarring, hair loss disorder. Due to its low incidence, little is known about endocrine and metabolic comorbidities in patients with PCA. Thus, we aimed to investigate the association between PCA and endocrine and metabolic disorders. This nationwide, population-based, cross-sectional study included patients diagnosed with PCA or non-cicatricial alopecia (NCA) and normal individuals without history of alopecia registered in the Korean National Health Insurance Service database between January 1, 2011, and December 31, 2020. We calculated the odds ratios of endocrine and metabolic comorbidities of patients with PCA compared to all patients or age- and sex-matched patients with NCA or normal individuals using multivariable logistic regression models. A total of 3 021 483 individuals (mean age [SD], 38.7 [15.0] years, 1 607 380 [53.2%] men), including 11 956 patients with PCA, 601 852 patients with NCA, and 2 407 675 normal participants, were identified. Patients with PCA had an increased risk for dyslipidemia (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] 1.14, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.06-1.24), diabetes (aOR 1.38, 95% CI 1.24-1.53), and hypertension (aOR 1.10, 95% CI 1.02-1.19) compared to matched patients with NCA. Regarding PCA subtypes, lichen planopilaris/frontal fibrosing alopecia was positively associated with hypothyroidism (aOR 2.03, 95% CI 1.44-2.86) compared to NCA. Folliculitis decalvans and dissecting cellulitis were positively associated with dyslipidemia (aOR 1.16, 95% CI 1.05-1.28 and aOR 1.16, 95% CI 1.04-1.29, respectively), diabetes (aOR 1.38, 95% CI 1.20-1.58 and aOR 1.52, 95% CI 1.32-1.74, respectively), and hypertension (aOR 1.10, 95% CI 1.00-1.20 and aOR 1.14, 95% CI 1.02-1.27, respectively). Similar trends were observed when each PCA subgroup was compared with the normal control group. This study demonstrates that patients with PCA are more likely to have endocrine and metabolic comorbidities than patients without PCA. Further research on these comorbidities may improve the understanding of PCA.

Abstract
Central centrifugal cicatricial alopecia (CCCA) is the most common form of scarring alopecia that most often affects Black women. The disease typically begins with hair loss in the center scalp, which progresses in a centripetal fashion. Both environmental insult and genetics have been implicated in CCCA etiology, although the exact pathophysiology remains unknown. Nevertheless, it is important that providers feel comfortable educating their patients on risk factors (RFs) for the development or worsening of CCCA, and potential comorbidities associated with the condition. Thus, the goal of this review was to summarize these factors. A comprehensive literature search was performed, and studies were included if they reported research on RFs for or comorbidities associated with, CCCA. A total of 15 studies were included: n = 5 researching RFs for CCCA and n = 10 researching comorbidities associated with CCCA. There was an association suggesting an increased risk of CCCA with traction hairstyles in n = 2/3 studies, previous pregnancies in n = 1/1 studies, and use of chemical hair relaxers in n = 1/3 studies. Additionally, age and total years of hair loss were associated with increased CCCA severity in n = 2/2 studies. Type 2 diabetes was positively associated with CCCA in n = 3/5 studies, uterine leiomyomas in n = 1/2 studies, hyperlipidemia in n = 1/2 studies, and vitamin D deficiency in n = 1/1 studies. Conflicting results regarding RFs and comorbidities associated with CCCA exist within the literature. Thus, further investigation in larger cohorts must be done, and future research into genes implicated in CCCA and their potential role in the development of other diseases is recommended.

Abstract
Tris(2,3-dibromopropyl) isocyanurate (TBC) belongs to the class of novel brominated flame retardants (NFBRs) that are widely used in industry. It has commonly been found in the environment, and its presence has been discovered in living organisms as well. TBC is also described as an endocrine disruptor that is able to affect male reproductive processes through the estrogen receptors (ERs) engaged in the male reproductive processes. With the worsening problem of male infertility in humans, a mechanism is being sought to explain such reproductive difficulties. However, so far, little is known about the mechanism of action of TBC in male reproductive models in vitro. Therefore, the aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of TBC alone and in cotreatment with BHPI (estrogen receptor antagonist), 17β-estradiol (E2), and letrozole on the basic metabolic parameters in mouse spermatogenic cells (GC-1 spg) in vitro, as well as the effect of TBC on mRNA expression (Ki67, p53, Pparγ, Ahr, and Esr1). The presented results show the cytotoxic and apoptotic effects of high micromolar concentrations of TBC on mouse spermatogenic cells. Moreover, an increase in Pparγ mRNA levels and a decrease in Ahr and Esr1 gene expression were observed in GS-1spg cells cotreated with E2. These results suggest the significant involvement of TBC in the dysregulation of the steroid-based pathway in the male reproductive cell models in vitro and may be the cause of the currently observed deterioration of male fertility. However, more research is needed to reveal the full mechanism of TBC engagement in this phenomenon.

Abstract
Background Immune-mediated alopecias (IMAs), a group of hair disorders associated with immunological reactions, remain a therapeutic challenge since available treatments are generally unfavorable with potential side effects. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) has been recently proposed as a treatment option based on several limited-quality studies; however, there is no systematic evaluation of PRP efficacy on IMAs in the literature. Objective To assess PRP's effects in treating IMAs using a systematic review. Methods Electronic searches were conducted using PubMed, Embase, Scopus, and Cochrane Library databases. A search strategy was designed to retrieve all studies exploring PRP in treating IMAs, including alopecia areata (AA) and primary cicatricial alopecias (PCAs). In addition, all randomized and non-randomized studies reporting subjective and/or objective outcomes of alopecia treatment with PRP were included. Results Thirty-two studies were included, comprising 621 patients with AA and 19 patients with PCAs. PRP had superior efficacy as monotherapy in five studies, comparable to intralesional corticosteroids in six studies in AA treatment. In addition, in the analysis of PCAs, including lymphocytic and neutrophilic subtypes, PRP was efficacious in alleviating disease progression in nine studies. Conclusion PRP is considered a promising treatment for AA and PCAs in patients who experienced unfavorable outcomes from conventional treatment. However, its clinical application remains to be standardized, and its recommendation as a treatment for IMAs could not be ascertained due to a lack of high-quality evidence. Abstract
Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) is an important human pathogen with neurotropism. Following lytic infection in mucosal or skin epithelium, life-long latency is established mainly in sensory neurons, which can periodically reactivate by stress, leading to recurrent disease and virus transmission. During the virus's productive infection, the tegument protein VP16, a component of HSV-1 virion, is physically associated with two cellular factors, host cell factor-1 (HCF-1), and POU domain protein Oct-1, to construct the VP16-induced complex, which is essential to stimulate immediate early (IE)-gene transcription as well as initiate the lytic programme. Apart from HCF-1 and Oct-1, VP16 also associates with a series of other host factors, making a VP16-induced regulatory switch to either activate or inactivate virus gene transcription. In addition, VP16 has effects on distinct signalling pathways via binding to various host molecules that are essentially related to innate immune responses, RNA polymerases, molecular chaperones, and virus infection-induced host shutoff. VP16 also functionally compensates for given host factors, such as PPAR-γ and ß-catenin. In this review, we provide an overview of the updated insights on the interplay between VP16 and the host factors that coordinate virus infection.

Abstract
Frontal fibrosing alopecia (FFA) is a primary patterned cicatricial alopecia that mostly affects postmenopausal women and causes frontotemporal hairline regression and eyebrow loss. Although the incidence of FFA has increased worldwide over the last decade, its etiology and pathology are still unclear. We cover the latest findings on its pathophysiology, including immunomodulation, neurogenic inflammation, and genetic regulation, to provide more alternatives for current clinical treatment. A persistent inflammatory response and immune privilege (IP) collapse develop and lead to epithelial hair follicle stem cells (eHFSCs) destruction and epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) in the bulge area, which is the key process in FFA pathogenesis. Eventually, fibrous tissue replaces normal epithelial tissue and fills the entire hair follicle (HF). In addition, some familial reports and genome-wide association studies suggest a genetic susceptibility or epigenetic mechanism for the onset of FFA. The incidence of FFA increases sharply in postmenopausal women, and many FFA patients also suffer from female pattern hair loss in clinical observation, which suggests a potential association between FFA and steroid hormones. Sun exposure and topical allergens may also be triggers of FFA, but this conjecture has not been proven. More evidence and cohort studies are needed to help us understand the pathogenesis of this disease.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Scalp biopsy is a standard method for the definitive diagnosis of alopecia. The hair count parameters of each scalp area remain unclear. This study aimed to determine hair count values at different scalp locations from histopathology and to establish reference values for each part of the scalp. METHODS We obtained biopsy specimens from the frontal, vertex, temporoparietal, and occipital areas of the scalps of normal deceased subjects. All specimens were evaluated for the number of follicular units, hair counts, hair types, and stages of the hair cycle. RESULTS In total, 240 specimens were collected from 60 cadavers. Across all scalp sites, the temporoparietal area showed the lowest mean hair count, number of follicular units, terminal and vellus hairs, and terminal-to-vellus hair ratio. The average anagen-to-telogen hair ratio was comparable across all scalp sites. This study did not observe a significant association of hair parameters with gender differences or increasing age in all scalp areas. CONCLUSIONS The present study revealed the diversity of the hair index among different scalp areas and suggested that normal hair count values should be separately standardized on each scalp region. Our findings may provide useful reference values for the histopathological evaluation of hair disorders in Asians.

Abstract
MPZL3 is a nuclear-encoded, mitochondrially localized, immunoglobulin-like V-type protein that functions as a key regulator of epithelial cell differentiation, lipid metabolism, ROS production, glycemic control, and energy expenditure. Recently, MPZL3 has surfaced as an important modulator of sebaceous gland function and of hair follicle cycling, an organ transformation process that is also governed by peripheral clock gene activity and PPARγ. Given the phenotype similarities and differences between Mpzl3 and Pparγ knockout mice, we propose that MPZL3 serves as a signaling hub that is regulated by core clock gene products and/or PPARγ to translate signals from these nuclear transcription factors to the mitochondria to modulate circadian and metabolic regulation. Conservation between murine and human MPZL3 suggests that human MPZL3 may have similarly complex functions in health and disease. We summarize current knowledge and discuss future directions to elucidate the full spectrum of MPZL3 functions in mammalian physiology.

Abstract
Both agonist studies and loss-of-function models indicate that PPARγ plays an important role in cutaneous biology. Since PPARγ has a high level of basal activity, we hypothesized that epidermal PPARγ would regulate normal homeostatic processes within the epidermis. In this current study, we performed mRNA sequencing and differential expression analysis of epidermal scrapings from knockout mice and wildtype littermates. Pparg-/-epi mice exhibited a 1.5-fold or greater change in the expression of 11.8% of 14,482 identified transcripts. Up-regulated transcripts included those for a large number of cytokines/chemokines and their receptors, as well as genes associated with inflammasome activation and keratinization. Several of the most dramatically up-regulated pro-inflammatory genes in Pparg-/-epi mouse skin included Igfl3, 2610528A11Rik, and Il1f6. RT-PCR was performed from RNA obtained from non-lesional full-thickness skin and verified a marked increase in these transcripts, as well as transcripts for Igflr1, which encodes the receptor for Igfl3, and the 2610528A11Rik receptor (Gpr15). Transcripts for Il4 were detected in Pparg-/-epi mouse skin, but transcripts for Il17 and Il22 were not detected. Down-regulated transcripts included sebaceous gland markers and a number of genes associated with lipid barrier formation. The change in these transcripts correlates with an asebia phenotype, increased transepidermal water loss, alopecia, dandruff, and the appearance of spontaneous inflammatory skin lesions. Histologically, non-lesional skin showed hyperkeratosis, while inflammatory lesions were characterized by dermal inflammation and epidermal acanthosis, spongiosis, and parakeratosis. In conclusion, loss of epidermal Pparg alters a substantial set of genes that are associated with cutaneous inflammation, keratinization, and sebaceous gland function. The data indicate that epidermal PPARγ plays an important role in homeostatic epidermal function, particularly epidermal differentiation, barrier function, sebaceous gland development and function, and inflammatory signaling.

Abstract
Alopecia areata (AA) is an autoimmune disease of the hair follicles. It is characterized by a well-defined non-scarring alopecic patch or patches that may extend to the entire scalp or lead to total body hair loss. Due to its unpredictable clinical course, AA causes substantial psychological harm. Despite the high prevalence of this disease and extensive research, its exact pathomechanism is unclear, and current treatments have a high relapse rate that has deemed AA incurable. Over the past few decades, researchers have investigated multiple potential factors that may help alleviate its pathogenesis and provide effective treatment. Given its complex immunopathogenesis, AA is considered an autoimmune disease with multiple factors. This review gathers current evidence that emphasizes molecular mechanisms, possible causative etiologies, and targeted immunotherapies for AA. Understanding its underlying mechanisms may shed light on new strategies to effectively manage AA in the future.

Abstract
Alopecia is a challenging problem for both physicians and patients in terms of diagnosis and treatment. Alopecia usually has negative effects on patients' emotional and psychological well-being. Several studies have examined the effect of alopecia on patients' health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and have consistently reported poor scores. However, deeper insight into the impact of alopecia on affected individuals and its measurement using HRQoL questionnaires is lacking in the literature. In this article, the methods for measuring the HRQoL of patients with alopecia were comprehensively reviewed. Their applications and limitations were also discussed.

Abstract
Background: Scalp psoriasis is usually refractory to treatment. Excimer devices have been proved to be a promising therapeutic option in psoriasis. Greater efficacy of phototherapy can be achieved by concurrent use of coal tar derivatives. Objective: We aimed to compare efficacy and safety between 308-nm excimer lamp monotherapy and a combination of 308-nm excimer lamp and 10% liquor carbonis detergens in the treatment of scalp psoriasis. Methods: In this randomized, evaluator-blinded, prospective, comparative study, 30 patients with scalp psoriasis received either 308-nm excimer lamp monotherapy or a combination of 308-nm excimer lamp and 10% liquor carbonis detergens twice per week until complete remission of the scalp or for a total of 30 sessions. Efficacy was evaluated by the improvement of Psoriasis Scalp Severity Index (PSSI) score, itch score, and Scalpdex score. Results: Both treatments induced significant improvement in PSSI score with greater reduction observed in the combination group. At 30th visit, a 75% reduction in PSSI (PSSI75) was attained by 4 (28.6%) and 9 (69.2%) patients treated with monotherapy and combination therapy, respectively (P < 0.05). Conclusions: Excimer lamp is well-tolerated in patients with scalp psoriasis and liquor carbonis detergens can be used as a combination therapy to improve the efficacy of excimer lamp.

Abstract
Background The use of methotrexate-acitretin (MTX-ACI) combination therapy in treating psoriasis has been limited due to concerns related to hepatic fibrosis. However, in vitro evidence revealed a protective effect of acitretin in methotrexate (MTX)-induced liver fibrosis. Objective This study aimed to compare the real-life incidence of hepatic fibrosis in patients with psoriasis receiving MTX-ACI and MTX monotherapy and to investigate factors associated with hepatic fibrosis in MTX-exposed patients. Methods A retrospective cohort study was conducted based on a real-life registry containing data on patients with psoriasis who were administered MTX-ACI or MTX between 2008 and 2019 and underwent transient elastography according to cumulative MTX dose of 1.0–1.5 g and/or 3.5–4.0 g. Time-to-event analysis was performed to determine the cumulative incidence, incidence rate, and factors potentially affecting the occurrence of hepatic fibrosis. Results Of the 160 patients, 32 (20%) were treated with MTX-ACI, and 128 (80%) with MTX alone. Four patients (12.5%) in MTX-ACI group and 21 (16.4%) in MTX group developed hepatic fibrosis (p = 0.59). There was no statistically significant difference in cumulative incidence (16% in MTX-ACI vs 17% in MTX, p = 0.89) and incidence rate (37 cases per 1000 person-year in MTX-ACI vs 23 cases per 1000 person-year in MTX; hazard ratio [HR] = 1.07; p = 0.90) of hepatic fibrosis between the two groups. Diabetes and obesity were identified as significant factors associated with hepatic fibrosis (adjusted HR = 2.40, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.05–5.51; p = 0.04 and adjusted HR = 3.28, 95% CI: 1.18–9.16; p = 0.02, respectively) regardless of the cumulative MTX dose. Conclusion The incidence of hepatic fibrosis in a real-life clinical situation, determined by transient elastography in patients with psoriasis receiving MTX-ACI, was not increased compared to those receiving MTX monotherapy. Type 2 diabetes mellitus and obesity were identified as risk factors of hepatic fibrosis; hence, patients with these factors receiving long-term MTX therapy should be regularly monitored for this particular event.

Abstract
Background Androgenetic alopecia (AGA) is the most common type of hair loss in men. Its prevalence increases with advancing age. Characteristics of hair loss in male AGA reveal the possibility of different biophysical and physiological profiles between androgen-sensitive (vertex) and androgen-insensitive (occipital) scalps. However, these variations have not been well investigated. Objective We aimed to evaluate and compare scalp biophysical and physiological characteristics in male AGA patients and healthy controls. Methods Scalp biophysiological profiles were evaluated by non-invasive measuring techniques, including skin surface lipids (SSL), transepidermal water loss (TEWL), and stratum corneum hydration (SCH) on both vertex and occipital areas. Values were compared between scalp areas and study groups. Participants with AGA were further categorized based on disease severity (Hamilton-Norwood classification) for subgroup analyses. Correlation coefficients were evaluated to determine the effects of AGA severity and age on each functional parameter. Results Participants were 31 AGA subjects and 31 healthy controls. The vertex scalp of AGA patients had significantly higher SSL (p = 0.03) and lower SCH (p = 0.02) compared to the occipital scalp. TEWL was not significantly different (p = 0.31). AGA group SSL showed a positive correlation with severity of hair loss (r = 0.61, p = 0.03). When compared to controls, the AGA group vertex scalp had significantly higher SSL (p = 0.03) and lower TEWL (p < 0.001). The occipital area showed no statistically significant differences. Conclusion Male AGA presents with different biophysical and physiological characteristics in androgen-sensitive and androgen-insensitive areas, and with further differences from controls. These findings could direct further research and aid in the development of optimal hair and scalp treatments to improve scalp functional profiles in particular patients.

Abstract
Lichen planopilaris is a rare inflammatory condition that is also known as follicular lichen planus. Although the condition commonly affects the scalp, it sometimes involves the other regions of the body with a variety of clinical presentations. The involvement beyond the scalp is considered to be a generalized nature of disease process. In this report, we present a case of generalized follicular lichen planus in a 34-year-old Thai female presenting with comedone-like lesions on the trunk and extremities as well as scarring alopecia on the scalp. Dermoscopic features were also discussed.

Abstract
Treatment of extensive or recalcitrant alopecia areata (AA) is a major clinical challenge. Even after thorough investigation of several medications, its treatment outcomes have remained unsatisfactory. While there is no US Food and Drug Administration-approved medication for AA yet, topical immunotherapy has been a well-documented treatment option. Dinitrochlorobenzene, squaric acid dibutylester, and diphenylcyclopropenone are three substances that have demonstrated efficacy in the treatment of extensive or recalcitrant AA. Despite being commonly used, the mechanism underlying topical immunotherapy is not well-elucidated and a wide range of clinical efficacies have been reported in the literature. The aim of this review was to summarize and update the pharmacology, mechanism of action, therapeutic efficacy, and tolerability of topical immunotherapy in the treatment of AA.

Abstract
Alopecia for patients with discoid lupus erythematosus can sometimes be a refractory condition, where mixed infiltrates of T lymphocytes and histiocytes leads to destruction of hair follicles, which might cause permanent scarring. Early diagnosis and timely treatment can achieve hair regeneration and prevent further disease progression. Concentrated growth factor, a novel autologous plasma extract, contains various growth factors that could promote tissue regeneration. In this article, we report a case of cell growth factor combined with corticosteroids for the treatment of discoid lupus erythematosus alopecia. This case study concludes with satisfactory clinical effect.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The hairline is an essential component of the human face. Disfigurement of the hairline may cause physical and psychological problems. Standard guidelines do not exist for female hairline designs, average values of infratemporal portion, hairline classifications, and preferences. AIMS We aimed to study hairline characteristics in Thai females and further compare the values with previous studies in different populations. Furthermore, we aimed to introduce a comprehensive hairline classification system that allowed an easy and detailed phenotypic characterization of female hairline. PATIENTS/METHODS Healthy Thai females aged over 18 years were included in the study. Collection of demographic data, infratemporal measurements, and standard photography was performed. All collected data were analyzed to determine the standard values of each hairline dimension for comparison to previous studies. RESULTS Two hundred and twenty-nine females, with a mean age of 32.4 ± 8.6 years, participated in this study. The mean mid-frontal line was 6.45 ± 0.89 cm, which was not correlated with age. Lateral mounds, widow's peaks, and cowlicks were observed in 42.35%, 24.45%, and 1.74% participants, respectively. Our study revealed five patterns of the frontal hairline and four patterns of the temporal hairline. The mid-frontal line in Asian females trended longer than that in Caucasians, without statistical significance. CONCLUSIONS Measurements of the infratemporal portions in Thai females revealed no change with age, and the mid-frontal line showed no statistically significant differences between Korean and Turkish participants. The hairline classification system introduced in our study was comprehensive and would be easily applicable in clinical practice. Female hairline dimensions and patterns reported in our study could provide reference values for hairline design in hairline restoration surgery as well as assist in accurate diagnosis of hair disorders.

Abstract
Sun protection has been recommended by public health authorities to reduce the risk of keratinocyte and melanocyte tumors, yet some sun exposure is required for vitamin D synthesis. Frontal fibrosing alopecia (FFA) is a cicatricial alopecia that has been reported to have an association with facial photoprotection. The brief review proposes the hypothesis that FFA arises as a result of excessive facial photo-protection with a resultant disturbance in immunological homeostasis mediated via the aryl hydrocarbon receptor-kynurenine pathway axis (AHR/KP) leading to the collapse of immune privilege at the hair bulge.

Abstract
Asian hair is known for its straightness, dark pigmentation, and large diameter. The cuticle layer in Asians is thicker with more compact cuticle cells than that in Caucasians. Asian hair generally exhibits the strongest mechanical properties, and its cross-sectional area is determined greatly by genetic variations, particularly from the ectodysplasin A receptor gene. However, knowledge on Asian hair remains unclear with limited studies. This article aimed to review and summarize the characteristics and properties of Asian hair. It also aimed to discuss hair disorders including linear lupus panniculitis and pseudocyst of the scalp that occur distinctively in Asian populations.

Abstract
Objective Hepatic ischemia reperfusion (IR) limits the development of liver transplantation technology. The aim of this study was to explore the protective effects of Bergenin on hepatic IR, particularly the elimination of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and activation of the peroxisome proliferators activated receptor γ (PPAR-γ) pathway. Methods Initial experiments were performed to confirm the non-toxicity of Bergenin. Mice were randomly divided into sham, IR, and IR + Bergenin (10, 20 and 40 mg/kg) groups, and serum and tissue samples were obtained at 2, 8 and 24 h for detection of liver enzymes (ALT and AST), inflammatory factors (TNF-α, IL-6 and IL-1β), ROS, cell death markers (Bcl-2, Bax, Beclin-1 and LC3) and related important pathways (PPAR-γ, P38 MAPK, NF-κB p65 and JAK2/STAT1). Results Bergenin reduced the release of ROS, down-regulated inflammatory factors, and inhibited apoptosis and autophagy. Additionally, expression of PPAR-γ-related genes was increased and phosphorylation of P38 MAPK, NF-κB p65 and JAK2/STAT1-related proteins was decreased in Bergenin pre-treatment groups in a dose-dependent manner. Conclusion Bergenin exerts hepatic protection by eliminating ROS, affecting the release of inflammatory factors, and influencing apoptosis- and autophagy-related genes via the PPAR-γ pathway in this model of hepatic IR injury.

Abstract
Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPARs) are abundantly expressed in human skin, with PPAR-γ being the most intensively investigated isoform. In various ex vivo and in vivo models, PPAR-γ-mediated signalling has recently surfaced as an essential element of hair follicle (HF) development, growth and stem cell biology. Moreover, the availability of novel, topically applicable PPAR-γ modulators with a favourable toxicological profile has extended the range of potential applications in clinical dermatology. In this review, we synthesize where this field currently stands and sketch promising future research avenues, focussing on the role of PPAR-γ-mediated signalling in the biology and pathology of human scalp HFs, with special emphasis on scarring alopecias such as lichen planopilaris and frontal fibrosing alopecia as model human epithelial stem cell diseases. In particular, we discuss whether and how pharmacological modulation of PPAR-γ signalling may be employed for the management of hair growth disorders, for example, in scarring alopecia (by reducing HF inflammation as well as by promoting the survival and suppressing pathological epithelial-mesenchymal transition of keratin 15 + epithelial stem cells in the bulge) and in hirsutism/hypertrichosis (by promoting catagen development). Moreover, we explore the potential role of PPAR-γ in androgenetic alopecia, HF energy metabolism and HF ageing, and consider clinical perspectives that emanate from the limited data available on this so far. As this field of translational human hair research is still in its infancy, many open questions exist, for which we briefly delineate selected experimental approaches that promise to generate instructive answers in the near future.

Abstract
Lipids and lipid metabolism are critical factors in hair follicle (HF) biology, and cholesterol has long been suspected of influencing hair growth. Altered cholesterol homeostasis is involved in the pathogenesis of primary cicatricial alopecia, mutations in a cholesterol transporter are associated with congenital hypertrichosis, and dyslipidaemia has been linked to androgenic alopecia. The underlying molecular mechanisms by which cholesterol influences pathways involved in proliferation and differentiation within HF cell populations remain largely unknown. As such, expanding our knowledge of the role for cholesterol in regulating these processes is likely to provide new leads in the development of treatments for disorders of hair growth and cycling. This review describes the current state of knowledge with respect to cholesterol homeostasis in the HF along with known and putative links to hair pathologies.

Abstract
Minoxidil was first introduced as an antihypertensive medication and the discovery of its common adverse event, hypertrichosis, led to the development of a topical formulation for promoting hair growth. To date, topical minoxidil is the mainstay treatment for androgenetic alopecia and is used as an off-label treatment for other hair loss conditions. Despite its widespread application, the exact mechanism of action of minoxidil is still not fully understood. In this article, we aim to review and update current information on the pharmacology, mechanism of action, clinical efficacy, and adverse events of topical minoxidil.

Abstract
Alopecia secondary to facial filler injections is a highly unusual sequela. Only 2 cases of hyaluronic acid-induced alopecia have been reported to date. Accumulating evidence suggests vascular compromise as its etiology, which can be accidental intravascular injection or external compression by overfilled materials. We hereby present, to the best of our knowledge, the first case of localized nonscarring and scarring alopecia secondary to autologous fat grafting and review the literature regarding filler-induced alopecia.

Abstract
Sumoylation of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ (PPARγ) affects its stabilization, sublocalization, and transcriptional activity. However, it remains largely unknown whether PPARγ sumoylation inhibits the transactivation effect, leading to endothelium insulin resistance (IR). To test this possibility, human umbilical vascular endothelial cells (HUVECs) with a 90% confluence were randomly allocated to two batches. One batch was first pretreated with or without vitamin E for 24 hr and the other infected with adenoviruses containing either PIAS1-shRNA (protein inhibitor of activated STAT1-short hairpin RNA) or scramble shRNA. Cells were suffered from high glucose and palmitic acid (PA) exposure for further 48 hr. The levels of PPARγ, p-IKK, IKK, and NcoR (nuclear corepressors) were measured by western blot analysis. The interaction of IKK and PIAS1, as well as the PPARγ sumoylation, were examined by coimmunoprecipitation. The results showed that the exposure of high glucose and PA induced reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and IKK activation in HUVECs, promoting the interaction of IKK and PIAS1 and the sumoylation of PPARγ. However, vitamin E and PIAS1-shRNA partially decreased ROS production and IKK activation induced by high glucose and PA exposure. These data indicate that ROS-IKK-PIAS1 pathway mediates PPARγ sumoylation, leading to endothelium IR via stabilizing PPARγ-NcoR complex. These findings benefit understanding of regulatory networks of insulin signaling, which might provide a potential target to prevent and cure IR-related diseases.

Abstract
The interaction between hair and malignancy is complicated. Various hair abnormalities can manifest in oncology patients as a clinical manifestation, the result of cancer therapy, or due to a paraneoplastic condition. The mechanisms of these changes remain unclear. Alopecia is one of the common clinical presentations occurring in oncology patients that affects their quality of life. The condition can concomitantly develop during the course of malignancy or when patients undergo cancer treatment. It is important for physicians to understand alopecia in association with malignancy as it may be an important associated finding or provide the clues to aid diagnosis. The aim of this review is to summarize the clinical characteristics of alopecia that occur in cancer patients and their relationship with the type of malignancy and its treatment.
