Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Gentiana radix (GR) and wine-processed Gentiana radix (WGR) have been commonly used in folk medicine for the treatment of bile or liver disorders, including jaundice, hepatitis, swelling and inflammation for thousands of years. However, the therapeutic effects of gentian root (GR) and wine-made gentian root (WGR) treatment on damp-heat jaundice syndrome (DHJS) have not been studied in animal experiments. AIM OF THE STUDY This study aimed to investigate the protective effects and mechanisms of GR and WGR on DHJS in rats. MATERIALS AND METHODS In a high-fat and high-sugar diet in a humidified hot environment, hepatic injury induced by giving alpha-naphthalene isothiocyanate (ANIT) in rats were used as a DHJS model. Histological analysis, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), PCR analysis, and metabolomics were used to elucidate the mechanism of GR and WGR for DHJS. RESULTS The results indicated that GR and WGR affected DHJS by inhibiting the release of aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), direct bilirubin (D-BIL), total bilirubin (TBIL), total bile acid (TBA), malondialdehyde (MDA), glutathione S-transferase (GST) (P < 0.05). In addition, they significantly reduced the gene expression levels of Na+/taurocholate cotransporting polypeptide (NTCP), bile salt export pump (BESP), multidrug resistance-associated protein 2 (MRP2) and multidrug resistance-associated protein 3 (MRP3) (P < 0.05). The WGR group improved the above function indicators better than the GR group. GR and WGR could restore 11 potential biomarkers in rats with DHJS tended to return to normal levels, these biomarkers were involved in arachidonic acid metabolism, steroid hormone biosynthesis, biosynthesis of unsaturated fatty acids, porphyrin and chlorophyll metabolism, retinol metabolism, arginine biosynthesis. The results of the metabolic pathway showed that WGR was significantly better than GR in the improvement of porphyrin and chlorophyll metabolism. CONCLUSIONS These findings suggest that treatment with GR and WGR has a beneficial effect on DHJS in rats, the major mechanisms may be involved in improving functional indicators of the body and endogenous metabolism, and WGR is more effective than GR. It provides important evidence for the clinical application of GR and WGR in the treatment of DHJS.

Abstract
Background Hyperthyroidism is an endocrine disorder with a relatively low global prevalence but significantly higher incidence among females compared to males. The onset age primarily ranges from 30 to 50, although it is not limited to this age group. Challenges in the treatment of hyperthyroidism include individualized treatment plan formulation, management of side effects, and prediction of disease progression, necessitating comprehensive consideration to achieve more effective therapy and management. Mendelian randomization studies can reveal more precise therapeutic targets between blood and urine biomarkers and hyperthyroidism, providing more decadent treatment options for the condition. Methods The study will build upon the omics Mendelian randomization (MR) framework by conducting MR analysis using 35 blood and urine biomarkers separately for two distinct databases of hyperthyroidism. Subsequently, the results will undergo meta-analysis and multiple corrections to ensure accuracy and reliability. Finally, positive findings will undergo reverse MR validation to verify causal relationships with hyperthyroidism. Results In the British database, the MR analysis of Total bilirubin levels about hyperthyroidism yielded an odds ratio (OR) of 1.097 (95% CI: 0.951-1.265, P = 0.205). Conversely, in the Thyroid Omics Association database, the MR analysis revealed an OR of 1.283 (95% CI: 1.122-1.467, P = 0.0002) for the same relationship. Meta-analysis of the MR analysis results from both databases, following multiple corrections, resulted in an OR of 1.192 (95% CI: 1.081-1.314, P = 0.015). Additionally, the direction of beta values in the MR analysis results from both databases was consistent. Conclusion The urine biomarker total bilirubin levels may contribute to an increased risk of hyperthyroidism and accelerate its progression, thus representing a risk factor for the condition.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The oxidative system plays an important role in the pathogenesis of schizophrenia. Inconsistent associations were found between hyperbilirubinemia and psychopathology as well as glycolipid metabolism in patients with schizophrenia at different episodes. This current study aimed to examine these associations in patients with acute-episode and drug-free (AEDF) schizophrenia. METHODS This is a retrospective study using 5 years of data from May 2017 to May 2022 extracted from the electronic medical record system of Chaohu Hospital of Anhui Medical University. Healthy controls (HCs) from the local medical screening center during the same period were also included. Participants' data of the bilirubin levels [total bilirubin (TB), conjugated bilirubin (CB), unconjugated bilirubin (UCB)], glycolipid metabolic parameters and the score of the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS) were collected. RESULTS A total of 1468 case records were identified through the initial search. After screening, 89 AEDF patients and 100 HCs were included. Compared with HCs, patients had a higher CB level, and lower levels of glycolipid metabolic parameters excluding high density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C) (all P < 0.001). Binary logistic regression analyses revealed that high bilirubin levels in the patients were independently associated with higher total and resistance subscale scores of BPRS, a higher HDL-C level, and lower total cholesterol and triglyceride levels (all P < 0.05). CONCLUSION Bilirubin levels are elevated in patients with AEDF schizophrenia. Patients with high bilirubin levels have more severe psychopathology and relatively optimized glycolipid metabolism. In clinical practice, regular monitoring of bilirubin levels in this patient population should be carried out.

Abstract
The prolonged usage of atypical antipsychotic drugs (AAPD) among individuals with schizophrenia often leads to metabolic side effects such as dyslipidemia. These effects not only limit one's selection of AAPD but also significantly reduce compliance and quality of life of patients. Recent studies suggest that bilirubin plays a crucial role in maintaining lipid homeostasis and may be a potential pre-treatment biomarker for individuals with dyslipidemia. The present study included 644 schizophrenia patients from two centers. Demographic and clinical characteristics were collected at baseline and 4 weeks after admission to investigate the correlation between metabolites, episodes, usage of AAPDs, and occurrence of dyslipidemia. Besides, we explored the combined predictive value of genotypes and baseline bilirubin for dyslipidemia by employing multiple PCR targeted capture techniques to sequence two pathways: bilirubin metabolism-related genes and lipid metabolism-related genes. Our results indicated that there existed a negative correlation between the changes in bilirubin levels and triglyceride (TG) levels in patients with schizophrenia. Among three types of bilirubin, direct bilirubin in the baseline (DBIL-bl) proved to be the most effective in predicting dyslipidemia in the ROC analysis (AUC = 0.627, p < 0.001). Furthermore, the odds ratio from multinomial logistic regression analysis showed that UGT1A1*6 was a protective factor for dyslipidemia (ß = -12.868, p < 0.001). The combination of baseline DBIL and UGT1A1*6 significantly improved the performance in predicting dyslipidemia (AUC = 0.939, p < 0.001). Schizophrenia patients with UGT1A1*6 mutation and a certain level of baseline bilirubin may be more resistant to dyslipidemia and have more selections for AAPD than other patients.

Abstract
Adequate experimental animal models play an important role in an objective assessment of the effectiveness of medicines and functional foods enriched with biologically active substances. The aim of our study was a comparative assessment of the effect of consumption of 1 or 2% cholesterol with and without regular (two times a week), moderate running exercise on the main biomarkers of lipid and cholesterol metabolism, as well as the intestinal microbiota of male Wistar rats. In experimental rats, a response of 39 indicators (body weight, food consumption, serum biomarkers, liver composition, and changes in intestinal microbiota) was revealed. Total serum cholesterol level increased 1.8 times in animals consuming cholesterol with a simultaneous increase in low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (2 times) and decrease in high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (1.3 times) levels compared to the control animals. These animals had 1.3 times increased liver weight, almost 5 times increased triglycerides level, and more than 6 times increased cholesterol content. There was a tendency towards a decrease in triglycerides levels against the background of running exercise. The consumption of cholesterol led to a predominance of the Bacteroides family, due to a decrease in F. prausnitzii (1.2 times) and bifidobacteria (1.3 times), as well as an increase in Escherichia family (1.2 times). The running exercise did not lead to the complete normalization of microbiota.

Abstract
Objective Bilirubin and triglycerides can regulate insulin secretion and glucose uptake. The aim of our study is to analyze associations between total bilirubin (TB) and the bilirubin-to-triglycerides ratio (BTR) with metabolic markers in healthy prepubertal children. Methods Subjects were 246 healthy children (mean age 8), of whom 142 (58%) were reevaluated 4 years later (mean age 12). The subjects were stratified according to age into three groups (<7.8 years; 7.8-9.6 years; and >9.6 years; n=82 each) at baseline and into two groups (<12.9 years and ≥12.9 years; n=71 each) at follow-up. Anthropometrics and laboratory parameters [TB and its fractions (direct and indirect bilirubin), triglycerides, HDL-cholesterol, glucose, insulin, HOMA-IR, HOMA-B and glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c)] were assessed at both baseline and follow-up. Results TB and BTR showed independent and negative association with baseline and follow-up HbA1c. These associations were stronger for BTR and in the highest age group. No independent associations were observed with HOMA-IR or HOMA-B. Conclusion TB and BTR are independently associated with HbA1c and predict its changes over time in healthy children. Our results indicate that TB and BTR may be useful parameters in studies of glucose tolerance in healthy children.

Abstract
Changes in the physiological health of species are an essential indicator of changing conditions and environmental challenges. Reponses to environmental challenges can often induce stress, influence physiology, and change metabolism in organisms. Here we tested blood chemistry parameters indicative of stress and metabolic activity using an i-STAT point-of-care blood analyzer in seven populations of free-ranging rock iguanas exposed to varying levels of tourism and supplemental feeding. We found significant differences in blood chemistry (glucose, oxygen, carbon dioxide, hematocrit, hemoglobin, calcium, potassium, and biliverdin levels) among populations exposed to varying levels of tourism, and some variation between sexes and reproductive states. However, different variables are not directly related to one another, suggesting that the causal physiological pathways driving tourism-induced differences are influenced by mechanisms that are not detected by common analyses of blood chemistry. Future work should investigate upstream regulators of these factors affected by tourism. Regardless, these blood metrics are known to be both stress sensitive and related to metabolic activity, suggesting that exposure to tourism and associated supplemental feeding by tourists are generally driven by stress-related changes in blood chemistry, biliverdin, and metabolism.

Abstract
Aging is accompanied by changes in physiology over time, which remains the largest risk of chronic diseases. The aim of this study was to explore the gender-specific bidirectional relations between the risk of chronic diseases and serum traits in a 3-year longitudinal study. A hierarchical non-linear model with random effects was used to assess the temporal patterns of anthropometric and serum traits from 2017 to 2019 among 2,338 participants. To assess the directional effect between the risk of chronic diseases and serum traits, a bivariate cross-lagged panel model (CLPM) was used to estimate the structural relations of repeatedly measured variables at three different time points. Candidate SNPs were analyzed and genotyped in MassARRAY Analyzer 4 platforms. In this study, metabolic syndrome (MS) score increased with aging in females, whereas the fatty liver disease (FLD) index decreased with aging in males; the MS score was negatively correlated with TB in females, and FLD index was positively related to urea in males; CLPM showed that the MS score predicted total bilirubin (TB) in females, and urea predicted the FLD index in males. Additionally, rs2292354 in G protein-coupled receptor kinase interactor 2 (GIT2) was associated with the MS score and TB in aged females. Our study suggests the potential gender-specific causal associations between development in MS and increase in TB level in females, and rise in urea level and improved FLD index in males. The SNP rs2292354 we investigated might be a biomarker for predicting MS in the elderly Chinese Han population.

Abstract
Background Apolipoprotein B (ApoB) and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) were identified targets for blood lipid management among coronary artery disease (CAD) patients. However, previous studies reported an inverse correlation between baseline LDL-C concentration and clinical outcomes. This study aims to explore the definite association between baseline ApoB and long-term prognosis. Methods A total of 36,460 CAD patients admitted to Guangdong Provincial People's Hospital were enrolled and categorized into two groups: high ApoB (≥65 mg/dL) group and low ApoB (<65 mg/dL) group. The association between baseline ApoB and long-term all-cause mortality was evaluated by the Kaplan-Meier method, Cox regression analyses and restricted cubic splines. Results The overall mortality was 12.49% (n = 4,554) over a median follow-up period of 5.01 years. Patients with low baseline ApoB levels were paradoxically more likely to get a worse prognosis. There was no obvious difference in risk of long-term all-cause mortality when only adjusted for age, gender, and comorbidity (aHR: 1.07, 95% CI: 0.99–1.16). When CONUT and total bilirubin were adjusted, the risk of long-term all-cause mortality would reduce in the low-ApoB (<65 mg/dL) group (aHR: 0.86, 95% CI: 0.78–0.96). In the fully covariable-adjusted model, patients in the ApoB <65 mg/d group had a 10.00% lower risk of long-term all-cause mortality comparing to patients with ApoB ≥65 mg/dL (aHR: 0.90; 95% CI:0.81–0.99). Conclusion This study found a paradoxical association between baseline ApoB and long-term all-cause mortality. Malnutrition and bilirubin mainly mediate the ApoB paradox. Increased ApoB concentration remained linearly associated with an increased risk of long-term all-cause mortality.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Metabolic syndrome (MetS) and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) are the leading chronic diseases worldwide. There are still many controversies about the association between serum bilirubin and MetS or NAFLD. This study aims to evaluate the association of serum total bilirubin (TBIL), direct bilirubin (DBIL), indirect bilirubin (IBIL) with MetS and NAFLD. METHODS Multiple databases were searched for relevant studies until November 2021. Randomized controlled trials, cross-sectional and cohort studies evaluating the association between serum bilirubin levels and MetS or NAFLD were included. RESULTS Twenty-four cross-sectional and cohort studies with 101, 517 participants were finally analyzed. Fifteen studies and 6 studies evaluated the association between bilirubin and MetS or NAFLD in health screening population, respectively, while 3 studies evaluated the association between bilirubin and non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) in NAFLD patients. Random effect model analysis showed the inverse association between TBIL and MetS in male (95%CI=0.71-0.96) and gender-neutral (95%CI=0.61-0.91) group. However, no significant association was found in females. Notably, the inverse association between DBIL and MetS was noticed in male (95%CI=0.36-0.75), female (95%CI=0.16-0.58) and gender-neutral population (95%CI=0.67-0.92). IBIL level was inversely associated with MetS in females (95%CI=0.52-0.96), whereas no statistical correlation presented in males. TBIL was not statistically correlated with NAFLD in gender-neutral or male subgroup. Similarly, there were no association between DBIL or IBIL and NAFLD in gender-neutral subgroup. However, the negative correlation between DBIL and NAFLD existed in males (95%CI=0.76-0.96). In NAFLD patients, IBIL analysis showed an inverse association with NASH (95%CI=0.01-0.12). CONCLUSION Serum TBIL and DBIL levels, especially DBIL levels, assume an inverse correlation with MetS in healthy population. Serum IBIL is inversely associated with the onset and degree of NASH in NAFLD patients. Exogenous bilirubin supplement may be a potential strategy to assist in lowering the risk of developing MetS and NAFLD. Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a common and critical illness, resulting in severe morbidity and a high mortality. There is a considerable interest in identifying novel molecular targets for management of AKI. We investigated the potential role of the circadian clock components Rev-erb-α/β in regulation of ferroptosis and AKI. EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH AKI model was established by treating mice with folic acid. Regulatory effects of Rev-erb-α/β on AKI and ferroptosis were determined using single-gene knockout (Rev-erb-α-/- and Rev-erb-β-/- ) mice, incomplete double-knockout (icDKO, Rev-erb-α+/- Rev-erb-β-/- ) mice and cells with erastin-induced ferroptosis. Targeted antagonism of Rev-erb-α/β to alleviate AKI and ferroptosis was assessed using the small-molecule antagonist SR8278. Transcriptional gene regulation was investigated using luciferase reporter, mobility shift and chromatin immunoprecipitation assays. KEY RESULTS Loss of Rev-erb-α or Rev-erb-β reduced the sensitivity of mice to folic acid-induced AKI and eliminated the circadian time dependency in disease severity. This coincided with less extensive ferroptosis, a main cause of folic acid-induced AKI. Moreover, icDKO mice were more resistant to folic acid-induced AKI and ferroptosis as compared with single-gene knockout mice. Supporting this, targeting Rev-erb-α/β by SR8278 attenuated ferroptosis to ameliorate folic acid-induced AKI in mice. Rev-erb-α/β promoted ferroptosis by repressing the transcription of Slc7a11 and HO1 (two ferroptosis-inhibitory genes) via direct binding to a RORE cis-element. CONCLUSION AND IMPLICATIONS Targeted inhibition of Rev-erb-α/β limits ferroptosis to ameliorate folic acid-induced AKI in mice. The findings may have implications for improved understanding of circadian clock-controlled ferroptosis and for formulating new strategies to treat AKI.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Some studies have shown that a high level of bilirubin is a protective factor against metabolic syndrome (MS), while a high level of transaminase is a risk factor for MS. However, the existing results are inconsistent and few cohort studies have been published. METHODS Using an ambispective cohort study, 565 Kazakhs from Xinjiang, China were selected as the study subjects. The baseline serum bilirubin and transaminase levels of the subjects were divided into quartiles and the relationship between these values and the incidence of MS was analyzed. The definition of MS was based on the Joint Interim Statement (JIS) diagnostic criteria. RESULTS The average follow-up time for the subjects was 5.72 years. The cumulative incidence of MS was 36.11% (204 of the 565 subjects), and the incidence density was 63.10/1000 person-years. Multivariate Cox regression analysis showed that the levels of total bilirubin (TBIL) and indirect bilirubin (IBIL) were negatively correlated with the occurrence of MS, Compared to the lowest quartile level (Q1), the hazard ratios of MS the TBIL levels at the Q2-Q4 quartiles were: 0.47 (0.31-0.71), 0.53 (0.35-0.79), and 0.48 (0.32-0.72), respectively, while IBIL levels at the Q2-Q4 quartiles showed an MS hazard ratio of 0.48 (0.32-0.72), 0.54(0.36-0.81), and 0.52 (0.35-0.77), respectively, all at a 95% confidence level. However, no relationship was found between transaminase levels and the incidence of MS. CONCLUSION Serum TBIL and IBIL levels were negatively correlated with the incidence of MS in a Kazakh population in China.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Serum bilirubin is an endogenous antioxidant that has protective effects against obesity-related metabolic diseases. OBJECTIVES This study aimed to evaluate the characteristics of total bilirubin (TBIL), direct bilirubin (DBIL), and indirect bilirubin (IBIL) and their relationships with insulin sensitivity in obese patients with impaired glucose regulation and type 2 diabetes mellitus (IGR/T2DM) in China. Patients and Methods. Cohort 1 comprised obese patients (n = 71) was divided into the IGR/T2DM group (n = 38, obesity with IGR/T2DM) and control group (n = 33, obesity without IGR/T2DM). Insulin sensitivity was evaluated using the hyperinsulinemic-euglycemic clamp technique (HEC) with glucose disposal rate (GDR, M value). Cohort 2 comprised obese patients with IGR/T2DM who underwent metabolic surgery (n = 109) as complementary to cohort 1. Insulin sensitivity was evaluated with the Matsuda Index and homeostatic model assessment of insulin sensitivity (HOMA-IS). RESULTS In cohort 1, TBIL, DBIL, and IBIL were higher within the physiological range in the IGR/T2DM group compared with the control group; IBIL was positively correlated with M value (r = 0.342, p=0.044) in the IGR/T2DM group, and multivariate logistic regression showed that IBIL might be independent protective factors against insulin resistance (odds ratio (OR) = 0.602; 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.413-0.878; p=0.008). In cohort 2, at 1 month after metabolic surgery, serum bilirubin levels (TBIL, DBIL, and IBIL) increased, and the percentage change in IBIL was positively correlated with the change of the Matsuda Index (r = 0.195, p=0.045). CONCLUSIONS The relationships between different types of bilirubin and insulin sensitivity varied. Serum indirect bilirubin might be a protective factor that enhances insulin sensitivity.

Abstract
PURPOSE To investigate the effects of metabolic abnormalities, hyperandrogenemia and ovulation induction by clomiphene/acupuncture on liver function parameters among women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). METHODS This is a secondary analysis of a randomized controlled trial. All 1000 subjects were diagnosed as PCOS by modified Rotterdam criteria. Liver function parameters, metabolic panel and hormone profile were measured at baseline and after treatment. The relationship between liver parameters with metabolic, hormonal parameters and ovulation induction was examined. RESULTS PCOS women with metabolic syndrome had higher liver enzyme levels but lower bilirubin and bile acid levels than without. PCOS women with hyperandrogenemia had higher liver enzyme, bilirubin levels than without. Correlation analyses showed that worsening of metabolic parameters was associated with higher liver enzyme levels but lower bilirubin and bile acid levels, while increased androgen levels were associated with higher liver enzyme, bilirubin and bile acid levels. Ovulation induction with clomiphene citrate could decrease bilirubin and bile acid levels, while acupuncture had no obvious effect on liver function. CONCLUSIONS Among PCOS women, metabolic abnormalities and hyperandrogenemia impaired different liver function parameters. Clomiphene could decrease the bilirubin and bile acid levels while acupuncture had no obvious effect on liver function.

Abstract
Paediatric Early Warning Scores (PEWS)are used in hospitalised patients to detect physiological deterioration and is being used increasingly throughout healthcare systems with a limited evidence based. There are two versions in general use that can lead to a clinical response, either by triggering an action or by reaching a 'threshold' when graduated responses may occur depending on the value of the score. Most evidence has come from research based on paediatric inpatients in specialist children's hospitals, although the range of research is expanding, taking into account other clinical areas such as paediatric intensive care unit, emergency department and the prehospital setting. Currrently, it is uncertain whether a unified system does deliver benefits in terms of outcomes or financial savings, but it may inform and improve patient communication. PEWS may be an additional tool in context of a patient's specific condition, and future work will include its validation for different conditions, different clinical settings, patient populations and organisational structure. The incorporation of PEWS within the electronic health records may form a keystone of the safe system framework and allow the development of consistent PEWS system to standardise practice.

Abstract
An effective immune response results in the elimination of pathogens, but this immunological benefit may be accompanied by increased levels of oxidative damage. However, organisms have evolved mechanisms to mitigate the extent of such oxidative damage, including the production and mobilization of antioxidants. One potential mechanism of mitigating immune challenge-induced changes in oxidative physiology is increasing biliverdin production. Biliverdin is chemically an antioxidant, but within-tissue correlations between biliverdin concentration and oxidative damage have never been directly examined. To test how biliverdin tissue concentrations are associated with physiological responses to an immune challenge, we exposed northern bobwhite quail (Colinus virginianus) to one of four treatments: injection of a non-pathogenic antigen - either lipopolysaccharide or phytohemagglutinin, control injection of phosphate-buffered saline or a sham procedure with no injection. Twenty-four hours later, we quantified oxidative damage and triglyceride concentration in the plasma, and biliverdin concentration in the plasma, liver and spleen. We found that both types of immune challenge increased oxidative damage relative to both non-injected and vehicle-injected controls, but treatment had no effects on any other metric. However, across all birds, oxidative damage and biliverdin concentration in the plasma were negatively correlated, which is consistent with a localized antioxidant function of biliverdin. Additionally, we uncovered multiple links between biliverdin concentration, change in mass during the immune challenges and triglyceride levels, suggesting that pathways associated with biliverdin production may also be associated with aspects of nutrient mobilization. Future experiments that manipulate biliverdin levels or oxidative damage directly could establish a systemic antioxidant function or elucidate important physiological impacts on body mass maintenance and triglyceride storage, mobilization or transport.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Bilirubin is considered an important antioxidant, anti-inflammatory factor and immunomodulator. The current investigation aimed to explore the association between bilirubin and white blood cell (WBC) count in a large Chinese cohort. METHODS A total of 61091 participants (29259 males, 31832 females) were recruited from a Chinese tertiary hospital. Data were sorted by sex, and the association between bilirubin and WBC count was analyzed after dividing bilirubin levels into quartiles. RESULTS Most parameters (including age, body mass index, systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, alanine aminotransferase, total bilirubin, blood urea nitrogen, creatinine, uric acid, triglycerides and WBC count) were significantly higher in men than in women. Bilirubin displayed significant negative relationships with most other measured variables. Linear logistic regression analysis further indicated their negative relationships. Females showed a significantly higher frequency of leucopenia than males. Significant associations of leucopenia with high bilirubin quartiles were shown in binary logistic regression models for both sexes, with a much closer association in men than in women. For instance, for men with bilirubin levels in quartile 4, the adjusted likelihood of leucopenia was 1.600-times higher than that of men with values in quartile 1. For women with bilirubin levels in quartile 4, the adjusted likelihood of leucopenia was 1.135-times higher than that of women with values in quartile 1. CONCLUSION Bilirubin is negatively related to WBC count. Significant associations exist between leucopenia and high bilirubin quartiles, and these associations are more obvious in men than in women.
