Abstract
Vinasse, a waste from the bioethanol industry, presents a crucial environmental challenge due to its high organic matter content, which is difficult to biodegrade. Currently, no sustainable alternatives are available for treating the amount of vinasse generated. Conversely, biopolymers such as cellulose, carboxymethylcellulose, and chitosan are emerging as an interesting alternative for vinasse control due to their flocculating capacity against several organic compounds. This study seeks to determine the thermodynamic behavior of in silico interactions among three biopolymers (cellulose, carboxymethylcellulose, and chitosan) regarding 15 organic compounds found in vinasse. For this, the Particle Mesh Ewald (PME) method was used in association with the Verlet cutoff scheme, wherein the Gibbs free energy (ΔG) was calculated over a 50 ns simulation period. The findings revealed that cellulose showed a strong affinity for flavonoids like cyanidin, with a maximum free energy of -84 kJ/mol and a minimum of -55 kJ/mol observed with phenolic acids and other flavonoids. In contrast, chitosan displayed the highest interactions with phenolic acids, such as gallic acid, reaching -590 kJ/mol. However, with 3-methoxy-4-hydroxyphenyl glycol (MHPG), it reached an energy of -70 kJ/mol. The interaction energy for flavonoid ranged from -105 to -96 kJ/mol. Finally, carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) demonstrated an interaction energy with isoquercetin of -238 kJ/mol, while interactions with other flavonoids were almost negligible. Alternatively, CMC exhibited an interaction energy of -124 kJ/mol with MHPG, while it was less favorable with other phenolic acids with minimal interactions. These results suggest that there are favorable interactions for the interfacial sorption of vinasse contaminants onto biopolymers, indicating their potential for use in the removal of contaminants from the effluents of the bioethanol industry.

Abstract
Inputs of carbon (C) and nutrients from organic residues may select specific microbes and shape the soil microbial community. However, little is known about the abiotic filtering of the same residues with different nutrient concentrations applied to the soil. In our study, we explored how applying organic residue, vinasse, as fertilizer in its natural state (V) versus its concentrated form (CV) impacts soil microbiota. We conducted two field experiments, evaluating soil prokaryotic and fungal communities over 24 and 45 days with vinasse (V or CV) plus N fertilizer. We used 16S rRNA gene and ITS amplicon sequencing. Inorganic N had no significant impact on bacterial and fungal diversity compared to the control. However, the varying concentrations of organic C and nutrients in vinasse significantly influenced the soil microbiome structure, with smaller effects observed for V compared to CV. Prokaryotic and fungal communities were not correlated (co-inertia: RV coefficient = 0.1517, p = 0.9708). Vinasse did not change the total bacterial but increased the total fungal abundance. A higher C input enhanced the prokaryotic but reduced the fungal diversity. Our findings highlight vinasse's role as an abiotic filter shaping soil microbial communities, with distinct effects on prokaryotic and fungal communities. Vinasse primarily selects fast-growing microorganisms, shedding light on the intricate dynamics between organic residues, nutrient concentrations, and soil microbes.

Abstract
Postbiotics are defined as a "preparation of inanimate microorganisms and/or their components that confers a health benefit on the host." They can be produced by fermentation, using culture media with glucose (carbon source), and lactic acid bacteria of the genus Lactobacillus, and/or yeast, mainly Saccharomyces cerevisiae as fermentative microorganisms. Postbiotics comprise different metabolites, and have important biological properties (antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, etc.), thus their cosmetic application should be considered. During this work, the postbiotics production was carried out by fermentation with sugarcane straw, as a source of carbon and phenolic compounds, and as a sustainable process to obtain bioactive extracts. For the production of postbiotics, a saccharification process was carried out with cellulase at 55°C for 24 h. Fermentation was performed sequentially after saccharification at 30°C, for 72 h, using S. cerevisiae. The cells-free extract was characterized regarding its composition, antioxidant activity, and skincare potential. Its use was safe at concentrations below ~20 mg mL-1 (extract's dry weight in deionized water) for keratinocytes and ~ 7.5 mg mL-1 for fibroblasts. It showed antioxidant activity, with ABTS IC50 of 1.88 mg mL-1 , and inhibited elastase and tyrosinase activities by 83.4% and 42.4%, respectively, at the maximum concentration tested (20 mg mL-1 ). In addition, it promoted the production of cytokeratin 14, and demonstrated anti-inflammatory activity at a concentration of 10 mg mL-1 . In the skin microbiota of human volunteers, the extract inhibited Cutibacterium acnes and the Malassezia genus. Shortly, postbiotics were successfully produced using sugarcane straw, and showed bioactive properties that potentiate their use in cosmetic/skincare products.

Abstract
Cellular pool of malonyl-CoA in Escherichia coli is small, which impedes its utility for overproduction of natural products such as phenylpropanoids, polyketides, and flavonoids. In this study, we report the use of a new metabolic pathway to increase the malonyl-CoA concentration as a limiting metabolite in E. coli. For this purpose, the malonate/sodium symporter from Malonomonas rubra, and malonyl-CoA synthetase (MCS) from Bradyrhizobium japonicum were co-expressed in E. coli. This new pathway allows the cell to actively import malonate from the culture medium and to convert malonate and CoA to malonyl-CoA via an ATP-dependent ligation reaction. HPLC analysis confirmed elevated levels of malonyl-CoA and (2S)-naringenin as a malonyl-CoA-dependent metabolite, in E. coli. A 6.8-fold and more than 3.5-fold increase in (2S)-naringenin production were achieved in the engineered host in comparison with non-engineered E. coli and previously reported passive transport MatBMatC pathway, respectively. This observation suggests that using active transporters of malonate not only improves malonyl-CoA-dependent production but also makes it possible to harness low concentrations of malonate in culture media.

Solid-phase microextraction with MIL-53(Al)-polymer monolithic column coupled to pressurized capillary electrochromatography for determination of chlorogenic acid and ferulic acid in sugarcane samples. Abstract
In this paper, a polymer monolithic column based on poly (Butyl methacrylate-co-ethylene glycol dimethacrylate) (poly (BMA-co-EDGMA)) doped with MIL-53(Al) metal-organic framework (MOF) was prepared using an in situ polymerization method. The characteristics of MIL-53(Al)-polymer monolithic column were studied through scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FT-IR), energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray powder diffractometry (XRD), and nitrogen adsorption experiment. Due to its large surface area, the prepared MIL-53(Al)-polymer monolithic column has good permeability and high extraction efficiency. Using MIL-53(Al)-polymer monolithic column for solid-phase microextraction (SPME), coupled to pressurized capillary electrochromatography (pCEC), a method for the determination of trace chlorogenic acid and ferulic acid in sugarcane was established. Under optimized conditions, chlorogenic acid and ferulic acid have a good linear relationship (r ≥ 0.9965) within the concentration range of 50.0-500 µg/mL, the detection limit is 0.017 µg/mL, and the relative standard deviation (RSD) is less than 3.2%. The spike recoveries of chlorogenic acid and ferulic acid were 96.5% and 96.7%, respectively. The results indicate that the method is sensitive, practical, and convenient. It has been successfully applied to the separation and detection of trace organic phenolic compounds in sugarcane samples.

Abstract
Vinasses represent important final disposal problems due to their physical-chemical composition. This work analyzed the composition of tequila vinasses and increased 5-hydroxymethylfurfural, furfural, and phenolic compounds using thermal hydrolysis with hydrogen peroxide as a catalyst. A statistical Taguchi design was used, and a UPLC-MS (XEVO TQS Micro) analysis determined the presence and increase of the components. The treatment at 130 °C, 40 min, and 0.5% of catalyst presented the highest increase for 5-HMF (127 mg/L), furfural (3.07 mg/L), and phenol compounds as chlorogenic (0.36 mg/L), and vanillic acid (2.75 mg/L). Additionally, the highest removal of total sugars (57.3%), sucrose (99.3%), and COD (32.9%). For the treatment T130:30m:0P the syringic (0.74 mg/L) and coumaric (0.013 mg/L) acids obtained the highest increase, and the treatment T120:30m:1P increased 3-hydroxybenzoic (1.30 mg/L) and sinapic (0.06 mg/L) acid. The revaluation of vinasses through thermal treatments provides guidelines to reduce the impact generated on the environment.

Abstract
Enhancement of sugar contents and yielding healthful sugar products from sugarcane demand high profile scientific strategies. Previous efforts to foster manipulation in metabolic pathways or triggering sugar production through combating abiotic stresses fail to yield high sugar recovery in Saccharum officinarum L. Novel sucrose isomers trehalulose (TH) and isomaltulose (IM) are naturally manufactured in microbial sources. In pursuance of novel scientific methodology, codon optimized sucrose isomerase gene, Trehalulose synthase gene II(CEMB-SIG2) cloned under dual combined stem specific constitutive promoters in pCAMBIA1301 expression vector integrated with Vacuole targeted signal peptide (VTS) to concentrate gene product into the vacuole. The resultant mRNA expression obtained by Real Time PCR validated extremely increased transgene expression in sugarcane culms than leaf tissues. Overall sugar estimation from transgenic sugarcane lines was executed through refractometer. HPLC based quantifications of Trehalulose (TH) alongside different internodes of transgenic sugarcane confirmed the enhancement of boosted sugar concentrations in mature sugarcane culms. Trehalulose synthase gene II receptive sugarcane lines indicated the unprecedented impressions of duly combined constitutive stem regulated promoters. Transgenic sugarcane lines produce highest sugar recovery percentages, 14.9% as compared to control lines (8.5%). The increased sugar recovery percentage in transgenic sugarcane validated the utmost performance and expression of ThSyGII gene .High Profile Liquid chromatography based sugar contents estimation of Trehalulose (TH) and Isomaltulose (IM) yielded unprecedented improvement in the whole sugar recovery percentage as compared to control lines..

Abstract
Polyphenols with high chemical diversity are present in vegetables both in the edible parts and by-products. A large proportion of them remains unabsorbed along the gastrointestinal tract, being accumulated in the colon, where they are metabolized by the intestinal microbiota. These polyphenols have been found to have "prebiotic-like" effects. The edible plant industry generates tons of residues called by-products, which consist of unutilized plant tissues (peels, husks, calyxes and seeds). Their disposal requires special and costly treatments to avoid environmental complications. Reintroducing these by-products into the value chain using technological and biotechnological practices is highly appealing since many of them contain nutrients and bioactive compounds, such as polyphenols, with many health-promoting properties. Edible plant by-products as a source of polyphenols highlights the need for analytical methods. Analytical methods are becoming increasingly selective, sensitive and precise, but the great breakthrough lies in the pretreatment of the sample and in particular in the extraction methods. This review shows the importance of edible plant by-products as a source of polyphenols, due to their prebiotic effect, and to compile the most appropriate analytical methods for the determination of the total content of phenolic compounds as well as the detection and quantification of individual polyphenols.

Vinasse odyssey: sugarcane vinasse remediation and laccase production by Trametes sp. immobilized in polyurethane foam. Biodegradation 2022; 33:333-348. Abstract
Vinasse is a high pollutant liquid residue from bioethanol production. Due to its toxicity, most vinasse is used not disposed of in water bodies but employed for the fertigation of sugarcane crops, potentially leading to soil salinization or heavy metal deposition. The anaerobic digestion of vinasse for energy production is the main alternative to fertigation, but the process cannot eliminate colored compounds such as melanoidins, caramels, or phenolic compounds. The treatment of raw vinasse with white-rot fungi could remove colored and persistent toxic compounds, but is generally considered cost-ineffective. We report the treatment of vinasse by an autochthonous Trametes sp. strain immobilized in polyurethane foam and the concomitant production of high titers of laccase, a high value-added product that could improve the viability of the process. The reuse of the immobilized biomass and the discoloration of raw vinasse, the concentration of phenolic compounds, BOD and COD, and the phytotoxicity of the treated vinasse were measured to assess the viability of the process and the potential use of treated vinasse in fertigation or as a complementary treatment to anaerobic digestion. Under optimal conditions (vinasse 0.25X, 30 °C, 21 days incubation, 2% glucose added in the implantation stage), immobilized Trametes sp. causes a decrease of 75% in vinasse color and total phenolic compounds, reaching 1082 U L-1 of laccase. The fungi could be used to treat 0.50X vinasse (BOD 44,400 mg O2 L-1), causing a 26% decolorization and a 30% removal of phenolic compounds after 21 days of treatment with maximum laccase titers of 112 U L-1, while reducing COD and BOD from 103,290 to 42,500 mg O2 L-1 (59%) and from 44,440 to 21,230 mg O2 L-1 (52%), respectively. The re-utilization of immobilized biomass to treat 0.50X vinasse proved to be successful, leading to the production of 361 U L-1 of laccase with 77% decolorization, 61% degradation of phenolic compounds, and the reduction of COD and BOD by 75% and 80%, respectively. Trametes sp. also reduced vinasse phytotoxicity to Lactuca sativa seedlings. The obtained results show that the aerobic treatment of vinasse by immobilized Trametes sp. is an interesting technology that could be employed as a sole treatment for the bioremediation of vinasse, with the concomitant the production of laccase. Alternatively, the methodology could be used in combination with anaerobic digestion to achieve greater decolorization and reduction of phenolic compounds, melanoidins, and organic load.

Improving the Anaerobic Digestion of Wine-Industry Liquid Wastes: Treatment by Electro-Oxidation and Use of Biochar as an Additive. ENERGIES 2020. Abstract
Wine lees have a great potential to obtain clean energy in the form of biogas through anaerobic digestion due to their high organic load. However, wine lees are a complex substrate and may likely give rise to instabilities leading to failure of the biological process. This work analysed the digestion of wine lees using two different approaches. First, electro-oxidation was applied as pre-treatment using boron-doped diamond-based electrodes. The voltage was 25 V and different treatment times were tested (ranging from 0.08 to 1.5 h) at 25 °C. Anaerobic digestion of wine lees was evaluated in batch tests to investigate the effect of electro-oxidation on biogas yield. Electro-oxidation exhibited a significant positive effect on biogas production increasing its value up to 330 L kg−1 of volatile solids after 1.5 h of treatment, compared to 180 L kg−1 of volatile solids measured from raw wine lees. As a second approach, the addition of biochar to the anaerobic digestion of wine lees was investigated; in the experimental conditions considered in the present study, the addition of biochar did not show any positive effect on anaerobic digestion performance.

Abstract
Disturbances in soil can cause short-term soil changes, consequently changes in microbial community what may result in long-lasting ecological effects. Here, we evaluate how multiple pulse disturbances effect the dynamics and resilience of fungal community, and the co-occurrence of fungal and bacterial communities in a 389 days field experiment. We used soil under sugarcane cultivation as soil ecosystem model, and organic residue (vinasse - by-product of sugarcane ethanol production) combined or not with inorganic (organic residue applied 30 days before or together with mineral N fertilizer) amendments as disturbances. Application of organic residue alone as a single disturbance or 30 days prior to a second disturbance with mineral N resulted in similar changes in the fungal community. The simultaneous application of organic and mineral N as a single pulse disturbance had the greatest impact on the fungal community. Organic amendment increased the abundance of saprotrophs, fungal species capable of denitrification, and fungi described to have copiotrophic and oligotrophic lifestyles. Furthermore, the changes in the fungal community were not correlated with the changes in the bacterial community. The fungal community was neither resistant nor resilient to organic and inorganic disturbances over the one-year sampling period. Our findings provide insights on the immediate and delayed responses of the fungal community over one year to disturbance by organic and inorganic amendments.

Abstract
A high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method equipped with a boron-doped diamond (BDD) electrode was established for the simultaneous determination of phenol, 4-ethylphenol (4-EP), guaiacol, 4-ethylguaiacol (4-EG), 4-vinylguaiacol (4-VG), eugenol, and o-, m- and p-cresol. The separation was performed on a reversed-phase HALO C18 core-shell column (3.0 × 50 mm, 2.7 µm) with a mobile phase comprising 10 mM formate, pH 3, and 15% acetonitrile (ACN) (v/v), a flow rate of 1.5 mL/min, corresponding to a total run time of 9 min. The electrochemical detection (ECD) was set at +1.5 V vs. Pd/H2 in oxidative mode. Under optimized operating conditions, good linearity was obtained for the nine phenolics with corresponding coefficients of determination (R2) above 0.998. The limits of detection (LODs, S/N = 3) were 10 nM-1 µM, with an 80-fold increase in sensitivity for guaiacol achieved with ECD over ultraviolet (UV) detection. The sensitive and selective HPLC-ECD method was successfully applied for the identification and quantification of the nine phenolics in Islay, Irish, Scotch, and Highland whiskey samples, with significantly higher concentrations of the flavorings determined in Islay whiskey.

Abstract
Sugarcane vinasse is the main waste stream of the Brazilian agroindustry. The typical composition of sugarcane vinasse gives it a high polluting potential that implies the necessity to define sustainable strategies for managing this waste. Knowledge of the inorganic and organic composition of vinasse and its seasonal variation is extremely important to conduct scientific research to define alternative managements for vinasse disposal other than fertigation. This study evaluated the variability of vinasse composition throughout the same harvesting season and among three harvesting seasons of one Brazilian annexed biorefinery (2015-2017). The contents of chemical oxygen demand (COD), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5), total solids (TS), suspended solids (SS), salinity (K+, Na+, Ca2+, Mg2+, Cl-, F-), nutrients (N, P, S), trace metals (Al3+, As2+, Ba2+, Cd2+, Cr3+, Co2+, Cu2+, Fe2+, Pb2+, Mn2+, Hg2+, Mo2+, Ni2+, Se2+, Zn2+), and specific soluble organic compounds (sugars, alcohols, and organic acids), as well as pH and conductivity, were monitored in 13 samples. The results indicated that sugarcane vinasse is a suitable feedstock for biological treatments, such as anaerobic digestion processes for energy recovery, as well as substrate for biomass (e.g., microalgae, energy crops, lignocellulosic biomass) growth. The application of a previous treatment makes vinasse a more environmentally friendly natural fertilizer for land fertigation.

Abstract
Ferulic acid (FA), an important phenolic acid, is widely distributed in higher plants and presents many pharmacological effects. Therefore, sensitive determination of FA in complex matrix is necessary. Molecularly imprinted polymers-coated CdTe quantum dots (CdTe-QDs@MIPs) exhibited incomparable advantages because of their combination of excellent selectivity of MIPs and high sensitivity of QDs. Here, a fluorescent probe based on CdTe-QDs@MIPs was successfully fabricated for selective and sensitive determination of FA. MIPs shell was obtained by the reverse microemulsion method using FA, 3-(aminopropyl) triethoxysilane (APTES), and tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS), as template, functional monomer, and crosslinker. In optimal conditions, the fluorescence CdTe-QDs@MIPs sensor exhibited fast response (within only 3 min), high sensitivity (limit of detection, LOD at 0.85 μg/l), excellent linear ranges (2-100 μg/l) with a correlation coefficient of 0.9996, and distinguished selectivity for FA. Satisfactory recoveries from 91.8% to 110.3% were achieved with precisions below 6.6% for FA analysis in real pineapple juice and apple juice by developed CdTe-QDs@MIPs. The fluorescence results coincided well with those obtained by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). It could be concluded that the resultant CdTe-QDs@MIPs offered a new way for rapid and sensitive analysis of FA in the complex matrix.
